While the crowd paled in comparison to the record number of Americans who, in 1963, heeded the call of the “Drum Major for Peace” in support of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, those who attended the 63rd anniversary of the historic civil rights protest on Aug. 28, were anything but quiet. Hosted by the National Action Network and the Drum Major Institute, under the leadership of the Rev. Al Sharpton and Martin Luther King III, respectively, this year’s march served as a clarion call for Americans to defend voting rights, protect civil rights and advance economic justice. Long before Dr. Debra McLaren became one of the region’s most respected elementary school principals, she was standing under bright stage lights, delivering soaring operatic lines to audiences across San Diego County. Her journey from opera singer to award-winning educator is a story of artistry, purpose, and an unwavering belief in the transformative power of children’s potential.
McLaren’s career began in the world of classical music, where her talent as a young opera singer earned her a coveted place in the San Diego Opera Ensemble, a touring program that brought live performances to schools throughout the county. For two years, she traveled from campus to campus, introducing students to the magic of opera and the joy of storytelling through music. See SCHOOLHOUSE page 2

CALIFORNIA BLACK CIVIL RIGHTS LEADERS MOBILIZE TO DEFEND VOTING By Solomon O. Smith

Black voting rights advocates in California convened virtually Aug. 28 after a federal court temporarily blocked new U.S. Postal Service restrictions on mail ballots, a ruling civil rights leaders described as an important but temporary victory ahead of the November election.
The restrictions are tied to President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 14399 and the Postal Service’s “Ballot Mail for Federal Elections” rule. Among other requirements, the rule calls for election officials to use a federal portal and comply with new standards for federal ballot-mail envelopes. A federal judge issued a 14-day temporary restraining order

In addition to Sharpton and King, other leaders from some of the nation’s most influential civil rights, faith and labor organizations, as well as several elected officials hammered home the message that while voting rights have recently come under attack, citizens must not give up. National Urban League President/CEO Marc Morial spoke with the AFRO on the eve of the event and provided his insights on what’s at stake. “We’re here to issue a call to action so people understand that they must cast their vote in the midterms if they want to see things change from the direction in which America is headed,” Morial said. “The pain, suffering, stagnant economy, low job growth and the rise in unemployment, including 600,000 Black women, are all related to the 2024 election. It’s not the business cycle that caused these problems — it’s the choices made by the 47th president. “In 1963, we were making demands to the entire nation. But today we’re facing a deliberate assault on our civil rights by an administration that has attacked and is threatening all of the gains we made 63 years ago.”

It was during those school performances that McLaren felt something shift. “I realized I wasn’t just performing for children; I was connecting with them,” she later reflected. That connection would become the catalyst for a dramatic career pivot. Inspired by the energy she found in classrooms, McLaren earned her teaching credentials and began working as a music educator. She taught kindergarten in the mornings and music in the

A special focus of this year’s event is reaching first-time voters and those who may feel disconnected from the voting process. The goal is simple: ensure community members have access to the information and resources they need to make their voices heard. Attendees will have access to voter registration assistance, information on how to register others, ballot proposition education, and other important voter resources provided by participating community organizations. The

“The bottom line here is that the postal office should deliver ballots, not decide who receives one or which votes do not count,” Callender said. “We’re going to fight this attack at every point; at the mailbox, on the voter rolls and in the protection of personal data.” The postal dispute comes as California is already engaged in another federal legal battle over voter information. In United States v. Weber, Secretary of State Shirley Weber refused to provide the federal government with the state’s full, unredacted voter-registration list,

have made it don’t seem interested in being part of this movement. But we need everybody. This is serious.”
“Some Black people feel betrayed, others are dejected. They thought the fight was over after we elected a Black president and saw so many Blacks elected as mayors or as members of Congress. Today’s younger generation didn’t have to fight like we did. They’ve been able to walk through doors that we helped to open and tear down,” he said.
“I’m here to support democracy and to let our leaders know that we want to participate in the fight for equal rights and to ensure that our voting rights are not stripped away. The world would be a better place if young people were encouraged to engage with our elders,” said Zion Crawford, 17.
As for the trio’s Baltimore-based friend, she said she attended the march because of that inner voice within her.
“Those who know history, remember the backlash Blacks endured after Reconstruction,” he continued. “We’re facing similar challenges again. And as we’ve done before, we will face these challenges together and devise a new set of strategies. We may get tired but we cannot rest. Not if we hope to progress as a nation.”
Black youth have their say Young African Americans showed up in admirable numbers for the march – some waving signs, others holding large banners or sporting college gear. But all were eager to share their thoughts and express their optimism.
Derwin Joseph, 25, said he was excited to participate in his first march. Still, he’s concerned about the divisions in America.
Lauren Thomas, 18, a freshman at Howard University, and a member of Howard’s NAN youth chapter, said she, along with about a dozen classmates, came out to defend the vote. “I am here to use my voice and to be an advocate for others who could not get here,” Thomas said. “I plan to major in political science and want to be a lawyer one day. So this is good practice and experience for the kinds of things I’ll be doing one day.” This article originally appeared in The Afro.
Three youth from New Orleans, visiting a colleague in Baltimore, agreed that it’s time for afternoons, blending her artistic background with a growing passion for child development. Her commitment to expanding arts access led her to write a successful VH1 Save the Music Foundation grant, bringing new instruments and opportunities to local students.

teacher development, and community partnerships, becoming a trusted voice in the district.
Her work didn’t stop there. McLaren went on to help establish an award-winning elementary orchestra program, a rare achievement in public elementary education. Under her leadership, the program flourished, earning regional recognition and giving hundreds of children the chance to experience the discipline, creativity, and teamwork that music education fosters.
Her tenure was marked by innovation and excellence. She led Wolf Canyon Elementary School, the school she had the privilege of opening, to receive the California Gold Ribbon Award and the Exemplary Arts in Education Award, honors that reflected both academic achievement and her steadfast commitment to arts integration. She also championed equity,

Black women, young voters and other communities that rely on early and mail-in voting. Lisa Gauthier, a San Mateo County supervisor and leader with Black Women Organized for Political Action, described Black women’s vote as a “decisive political force.”
Dora Rose, deputy director of the League of Women Voters of California, emphasized during the Aug. 28 meeting that the latest ruling involving the Postal Service provides only temporary relief. She said the “USPS restrictions are blocked” for now and called the decision an “important victory.”
Lisa Holder, president of the Equal Justice Society and a civil rights attorney said,“Frankly, we are here to sound the alarm that the segregationists are attempting to steal California elections. They are targeting a theft of the Black and minority vote.”

They also asked the LAO to examine potential consumer costs associated with AB 844, a 2003 law they say was recently cited by the California Energy Commission in connection with new replacement tire efficiency standards. The lawmakers cited gas prices, utility bills, rent and credit card debt as financial pressures facing California families. EDITORIAL/COMMENTARY/OPINION
MAKING NOVEMBER 3rd THE TRUE NO KINGS DAY have been against the illegal practices and activities of President Trump in violation of the Constitution and all democracy stands for. We have seen the United States Congress surrender its Constitutional authority to President Trump without question. We have seen people murdered by officials who called their actions all in the line of duty; we have seen American citizens arrested and placed in camps and deported in violation of their citizenship, the law and due process.
While the demonstrations in and of themselves made statements of protest, the President and his administration were basically unmoved, in most instances, because there were no forcible actions such moves could take against the White House. Trump has considered himself King and the United States Supreme Court has basically reinforced that position. But November 3rd, 2026, the Midterm General Election is a day of reckoning if we just get out and vote. Our individual votes can do the following:

• Change the control of the U.S. House of Representatives by replacing those Republican members who rubber stamp the President’s illegal actions instead of providing oversight, checks and balances; • At the local level, we must vote and ensure that candidates who support Donald Trump are not elect-
ed to office as they seek to implement his policies at the local level.
• Those persons running for School Board, City Council, Supervisor, Congress, State legislatures, and Governor must not get elected because some of us just refused to vote. The “my vote doesn’t count” excuse must end. This is how we ensure “NO KING”; This is how we stop ICE, Deportations without due process, troops on our streets, and unauthorized military conflicts that put our nation’s security at risk. If the millions of people who protested “No Kings Days” join those who are already committed to outvoting the Gerrymander Election Districts, overwhelm the President’s efforts to stop the vote or intimidate voters, we can put an end to this would be King before the next two years of his term are up. We the people, by getting out our vote and the votes of those around us can truly make November 3rd, 2026 No Kings Day and take back our lives; our jobs, healthcare, gas prices, food prices, housing, and guaranteed freedoms of speech and movement. Let’s be ready to vote and we won’t have to get ready. Let's vote early and undermine the efforts to delay our vote on Election Day.
IN MEMORIAM: DOLLY PARTON How She Built a Legacy of Love and Earned Her Place in Black Culture By Alexandria Green-Jones Before some of us knew Dolly Parton as the Queen of Country Music, we knew her as the woman behind Whitney Houston’s song. We knew the blonde hair, the rhinestones, and that unmistakable Tennessee voice. But somewhere along the way, Black America came to understand something deeper about Dolly; when she said she loved people, she had the receipts to prove it. The community is now left to mourn the icon who passed away at the age of 80, on Aug. 25, after dealing with an unknown medical condition. Known for her chart-topping country music hits, Dolly never felt as though she belonged only to one genre, or one kind of person. She showed up with humor, humility and a generosity that did not ask who you voted for before offering a helping hand. She made room for people, and in return, people from every corner of the culture made room for her. For Black audiences, the bridge to Dolly will always run through Whitney Houston. Parton wrote “I Will Always Love You” as she prepared to leave Porter Wagoner’s television show and released it in 1974. The original was tender and restrained, a country goodbye delivered with grace. Then Whitney got hold of it. Houston’s 1992 rendition for “The Bodyguard” did not merely update the record. She took it to church, then carried it around the world. That opening a cappella moment, the controlled stillness and the key change that made everybody reach for a note they had no business trying to hit turned Parton’s country ballad into a global anthem. The single spent 14 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, became the best-selling physical single by a woman and earned two Grammy Awards. And instead of trying to deny contribution or rush to remind everyone who wrote the song, she celebrated the way Houston’s voice trans-
formed it. In an industry with a long history of taking from Black artists while denying them proper credit, Dolly understood that acknowledging Whitney’s greatness did not diminish her own. One woman wrote an extraordinary song. Another woman revealed everything else that song could become.
sending one free, age-appropriate book each month to enrolled children from birth to age 5. What started in the rural community that raised her grew into an international literacy movement. By the end of 2025, the program had distributed more than 300 million books and was mailing about 3.4 million books each month.
Parton later shared that she used some of the royalties from Houston’s recording to purchase commercial property in a predominantly Black Nashville neighborhood. She called it “the house that Whitney built.” There was something beautiful about that acknowledgment. Whitney’s voice had generated wealth, and Dolly wanted part of that wealth rooted among people she described as Whitney’s people, and her people, too.
Those books found their way into homes in big cities as well as small towns. In New York City, the Imagination Library has been promoted through public schools and community organizations in the Bronx. For urban families navigating tight budgets, limited bookstore access or neighborhoods where children’s books are not always easy to find, a brand-new book addressed directly to a child can mean more than one package. It tells that child, “This belongs to you. Your imagination matters.”
Dolly’s relationship with Black America was not built on pretending she did not see color. She saw us. In a 2020 Billboard interview, she made her position plain: “Of course Black lives matter. Do we think our little white asses are the only ones that matter? No!” It was blunt, funny, and completely on brand. But Dolly also understood that allyship could not stop with a quote. After learning why the word “Dixie” was offensive and painful to many people, she removed it from the name of her Civil War-themed dinner attraction. She called her previous understanding “innocent ignorance.” More important, she fixed it. That willingness to listen mattered. Dolly did not perform perfection or become defensive when someone pointed out harm. She showed that loving people means caring enough to learn, change and do better. In a time when public figures often double down just to avoid admitting they were wrong, Dolly simply chose not to be cruel. Dolly’s love also arrived in the mail. Inspired by her father, who could not read or write, she launched the Imagination Library in 1995. The program began in Sevier County, Tennessee,
That was Dolly’s kind of giving: personal, useful and rooted in dignity. She also funded scholarships, supported hospitals, invested in medical research and helped families recover from disasters. Her $1 million donation to Vanderbilt University Medical Center supported research connected to the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. She turned the money she made entertaining people into opportunities to help them live, learn and rebuild. A preschooler opening one of Dolly’s books in the Bronx did not need to know “Jolene.” A parent reading that book at bedtime did not need to be a country music fan. Her generosity crossed racial and economic lines because it met families in real life, at the mailbox, in a hospital room or after the unthinkable happened. Dolly Parton leaves behind thousands of songs, beloved films, major businesses and enough rhinestones to keep heaven sparkling for a while. But her greatest legacy may be the way she made strength feel soft without ever making it weak. She knew exactly who she was, yet she never needed anyone else to become smaller so she could shine.
Parton poses for a photo during an interview in 1996 PHOTO: AP
For Black listeners, her bond will always be part of that story. “I Will Always Love You” was never about choosing between the white woman who wrote it and the Black woman who took it somewhere new. Dolly gave the world the words. Whitney gave those words wings. Together, they created a piece of American music that refuses to stay inside one genre or belong to only one community. That is why this loss feels personal, even to people who never met her. Dolly reminded us that tenderness can be powerful. She showed us that changing your mind can be a sign of character, that celebrating another woman’s brilliance does not steal your light and that love means very little if it never becomes action. Country music will forever call Dolly Parton one of its queens. But Black culture recognized something in her, too: a woman who respected our greatness, spoke up for our humanity and invested in our children. She did not simply leave this world loved. In the ways that mattered most, Dolly loved us back.

Behavioral Health Make Back-to-School Mental Health a Priority Leadership Change
After Misconduct Claims VOICE & VIEWPOINT NEWSWIRE
T
he County is making changes as a result of investigations into misconduct to ensure integrity, equity and accountability in our work, including serving some of our most vulnerable residents.
VOICE & VIEWPOINT NEWSWIRE
For College Students
The back-to-school season brings a familiar mix of excitement—and stress. New classrooms, teachers and routines can feel overwhelming for children, teens and the adults supporting them. Academic pressure, changing friendships and the push to adapt can be especially challenging for students who already experience anxiety or other mental health concerns.
College brings independence – and new pressures. Balancing coursework, schedules and social change can be overwhelming.
For K-12 Students

Children often take emotional cues from the adults around them. When parents remain calm and acknowledge that first-day nerves are normal, kids are better able to manage their own feelings. What helps: • Predictable and consistent morning and bedtime routines.
Sleep, steady routines and breaking large tasks into smaller steps remain effective at any age. Students also benefit from an outlet, whether it’s talking with a friend, journaling or taking a walk. Parents can support from a distance by keeping communication open and asking a few honest questions instead of offering lengthy advice.
Healthy Habits at Any Age
• Consistent sleep • Regular, balanced meals • Limited screen time one to two hours before bed • Real downtime after classes • An organized study space that makes it easier to work
Support Is Available Visit the County Behavioral Health Services Student Wellness Resources page and the SchooLink San Diego page for more information and support. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline offers free, confidential help 24/7. It’s Up to Us San Diego provides local mental health resources. The Soluna app offers behavioral health support for ages 13 to 25.

• Low-pressure daily check-ins. Asking, “How was lunch?” often opens the door more than, “How was school?” • Early conversations with teachers to understand how a child is doing socially and academically. • A simple homework plan with a clear workspace and time for questions.
Starting the school year strong doesn’t mean eliminating stress—some stress is normal. What matters is children and young adults have routines, relationships and support to help them navigate challenges. Those habits build resilience for the first weeks of school and the entire year ahead. This article originally appeared on CountyNewsCenter.com
FDA Approves Updated COVID-19 Shots Americans under age 65 could be expected to provide documentation of a serious medical problem before they can get a shot. Also complicating the rollout is the fact that pharmacists — who administer most COVID-19 shots — typically aren’t expected to collect that kind of information. And laws governing their ability to administer routine vaccinations vary by state.
By Matthew Perrone Associated Press U.S. regulators approved updated COVID-19 shots Wednesday, August 26, but limited their use for many Americans — and removed one of the two vaccines available for young children. The new shots from Pfizer, Moderna and Novavax are approved for all seniors. But the Food and Drug Administration narrowed their use for younger adults and children to those with at least one high-risk health condition, such as asthma or obesity. That presents new barriers to access for millions of Americans who would have to prove their risk — and millions more who may want to get vaccinated and suddenly no longer qualify. Additionally, Pfizer’s vaccine will no longer be available for any child under 5, because the FDA said it was revoking the shot’s emergency authorization for that age group. Parents will still be able to seek out shots from rival drugmaker Moderna, the other maker of mRNA vaccines, which has full FDA approval for children as young as 6 months. But the company’s Spikevax vaccine is only approved for children with at least one serious health problem. The revamped vaccines target a newer version of the continuously evolving virus and are set to begin shipping soon. But it could be days or weeks before many Americans know if they’ll be able to get one, with access dependent on decisions by federal health advisers, health insurers, pharmacies and state authorities. The new restrictions — previewed by FDA officials in May — are a break from the previous U.S. poli-

are strongly recommended for children ages 6 months to 2 years and advised for older children.
The approach reflects heightened skepticism about the ongoing risks of COVID-19 and the need for yearly booster shots from Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, both outspoken critics of wide-scale vaccinations.
In his post Wednesday, Kennedy said the shots will be “available for all patients who choose them after consulting with their doctors.”
Coverage questions and access issues are unresolved The new limits “can’t help but create barriers to vaccinations” and cause confusion for patients, doctors and pharmacists, said Dr. William Schaffner, a Vanderbilt University vaccines expert. Some medical groups, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, have objected to the restrictions, saying they may block vaccine access for families who want to protect their children. Last week, the group offered its own recommendations for kids, saying annual shots
But Americans are likely to confront a number of logistical hurdles. Insurers typically base their vaccine coverage decisions on the recommendations of a panel of advisers to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but some say they will also look to medical professional groups, including the American Medical Association. Earlier this year, Kennedy replaced the entire CDC panel, naming several doctors and researchers who have repeatedly questioned the safety of commonly used vaccines and ingredients. The panel is expected to meet in September, but no agenda has been released. Depending on the panel’s advice,
If the latest vaccines aren’t covered by their insurance, those patients could be required to pay $150 or more out of pocket if they want one. If they aren’t considered highrisk, they might also have to find a doctor or other health professional willing to give the shot “off label.” Many pharmacists might be reluctant to give the shots outside of FDA’s instructions.

A Healthier Me –
COMMUNITY DOCUMENTARY SCREENING AT MORSE HIGH SCHOOL VOICE & VIEWPOINT NEWSWIRE
O
n Sunday, August 30, community members gathered at Morse High School for a special screening of A Healthier Me, a documentary highlighting the life, service, and community health work of Dr. Suzanne Afflalo. The event brought together community members, healthcare professionals, faith leaders, families, and supporters to celebrate Dr. Afflalo’s legacy of service and continue an important conversation about health, access to care, and wellness in San Diego. Following the screening, Pastor Nate Stewart of Greater Life Church moderated a community panel discussion featuring Dr. Suzanne Afflalo, Danielle Gordon, NP, of IWC Primary Care, and Dr. Tanisha Fulcher. The discussion explored the story behind the work, lessons learned through years of community service, and the continued importance of improving access to healthcare and meeting communities where they are.

Insurance Redlining Means Two Identical Drivers Pay Different Prices By Amy Kang
I
nsurance redlining happens when the address on your policy shapes your rate more than your record behind the wheel. Companies build prices from personal details like your neighborhood and credit, not just your driving history. The result: two drivers with identical records can pay far different premiums, and the steeper bill usually falls on Black neighborhoods. State regulators are starting to back up what drivers have suspected for years. A 2024 study by the D.C. Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking found that Black drivers pay 46% more than white drivers on average – $1,031 a year compared to $705. Even after researchers accounted for age, claims history, and driving records, this gap persisted. Gaps this large are no coincidence. They come from pricing formulas that lean on credit scores, homeownership, and neighborhood lines shaped by decades of housing discrimination. The old red ink is gone from the maps, yet its outline still lives in the algorithms that set your premium.
What Is Redlining in Insurance? In the 1930s, federal housing maps drew red lines around Black neighborhoods and branded them “hazardous.” This is what insurance redlining is. For decades, insurers and banks used these maps to deny coverage and loans. This practice was outlawed by the Fair Housing Act of 1968. Modern insurance redlining wears a different disguise. An agent will be happy to sell you coverage regardless of race. By the time the quote reaches you, the higher price looks like just another number. These models measure where you live and what you own, not how well you drive. Advocates say the pricing pattern lands almost exactly where the old red lines sat. Even with a flawless record, a driver in a majority-Black area often pays hundreds more than a twin driver a few miles away.
Why Do Auto Insurance Premiums Vary by ZIP Code? Insurance companies frame ZIP-based pricing as basic risk math. More crashes, more theft, and pricier repairs in an area should mean higher rates, they say. The explanation sounds fair until you look at how narrowly the map gets sliced.
What Can Drivers Do About High Rates and Claim Denials? The formula is out of your hands, but the first quote is not. Shopping around remains a driver’s best weapon, since every company weighs the same inputs differently. Start with these steps: • Compare quotes from at least three insurers • Ask which discounts apply to you • Recheck your rate at every renewal • Save copies of quotes and letters The same coverage can cost hundreds of dollars less at the next company, and finding out takes minutes. Unfair pricing is only one side of the problem. After a crash, drivers can also run into: • Dragged-out investigations • Lowball offers • Flat claim denials

Insurers bet that most people will take the outcome quietly. Bringing in legal help rewrites that equation. Experienced personal injury attorneys can: • Review a denied claim • Deal with the insurance company directly • Fight for the full compensation a policy promises
Frequently Asked Questions Is Insurance Redlining Illegal? Charging higher rates based on race is illegal in every state. Pricing based on ZIP code, credit, and other non-driving rating factors remains legal in most places, even when the results fall along racial lines. That gap between what the law bans and what the data shows is exactly what regulators are now examining. Does My Credit Score Affect My Car Insurance Rate? Most states let insurers use credit-based insurance scores, and a weak score can raise your premium more than a speeding ticket does. California, Hawaii, and
ZIP codes are only one piece of the formula. Insurers also rely on non-driving rating factors, including: • Credit history • Education level • Occupation • Marital status • Homeownership Each of these inputs sits entirely outside driving skill, and each can still shift auto insurance premiums by hundreds of dollars a year. The same pattern shows up outside auto coverage. The Consumer Federation of America documented a racial premium gap in home insurance as well, with predominantly Black neighborhoods paying roughly 16% more, about $500 extra each year, for the same coverage.
What Are Regulators Doing About Insurance Redlining?
Under the state’s expanded regulation, which took effect in October 2025, auto insurers that use outside consumer data must prove their tools to avoid unfair discrimination in insurance practices. The requirements are direct: • Test pricing models for racial bias • Report the results to state officials • Fix any model that fails This makes Colorado the first state to require measurable evidence of fair pricing from auto insurers rather than taking their word for it.
Can I Find Out Why My Rate Went Up? Federal law requires an adverse action notice whenever your credit information raises your rate or limits your coverage. You can also ask your agent in writing for the specific reasons behind any increase. The answer may reveal a factor you can change before the next renewal. How Do I File a Complaint About Unfair Insurance Pricing? Every state insurance department accepts consumer complaints online at no cost. Include your policy number, the quotes you received, and any letters from the insurer. Regulators track complaint patterns, so each filing helps build the case for stricter rules. Can Usage-Based Insurance Lower My Premium? Usage-based programs track real habits through an app or plug-in device, then price the policy on braking, speed, and mileage. Safe drivers in high-priced ZIP codes often save 10% to 30% this way. Read the terms first, since some programs can raise rates for risky driving.
Say Goodbye to Hot & Cold Spots: 6 Tips for Everyday Comfort Keeping every room in your home at an ideal temperature can be a frustrating battle. Whether it’s an addition, upstairs office, older home, converted attic, or a room full of windows, these spaces often present unique climate control challenges. The good news? You don’t need an expensive HVAC overhaul to reclaim your space. Simple updates can increase your comfort and potentially decrease your utility bills. From quick DIY upgrades to high-efficiency zone cooling, here are six smart ways to conquer stubborn temperature challenges in your home year-round. PHOTO: Statepoint
Add Ceiling Fans While fans won’t lower air temperatures, their windchill effect makes you feel significantly more comfortable. Setting the blades to run counterclockwise creates a downward breeze to direct refreshing air where you need it most.
Install Window Coverings
State watchdogs are finally looking inside the pricing machinery. Colorado has moved first, with a rule that requires insurers to hunt down bias in their own models and correct it.
Massachusetts ban the practice for auto policies entirely. Improving your credit can lower your rate everywhere else, often within one or two renewal cycles.
While rooms with large windows and natural light are appealing, the additional radiant energy from the sunlight can cause them to be significantly warmer. There are many aesthetically pleasing heat-blocking window treatments, such as cellular shades or blackout drapes, that can create a functional, yet fashionable line of defense against the sun during the hottest parts of the day. Plus, these smart window coverings can ease the burden on your room’s cooling system to help reduce energy costs.
Seal Air Leaks According to Energy.gov, sealing air gaps is one of the quickest, most cost-effective ways to enhance indoor comfort and slash energy waste. Check around win-
dows, doors and baseboards for gaps that can allow outdoor air in and indoor air to escape. Sealing these drafts with caulk and weatherstripping is a simple weekend project that yields immediate rewards.
Improve Insulation Like air leaks, insulation stabilizes indoor temperatures for maximum comfort. Simple enhancements can include adding insulation to easy-to-access attics or crawl spaces, placing foam gaskets behind exterior outlet plates, or even blowing foam insulation through small holes in the drywall to reinforce your home’s thermal envelope.
Add a Window or Through-the-Wall Air Conditioner When passive fixes aren’t enough, adding a compact window or through-the-wall air conditioner delivers fast, targeted relief right where you need it. With a few strategic fixes and upgrades, keeping even the most stubborn rooms comfortable year-round can be easy and affordable. StatePoint

Donning a seaman’s uniform and carrying another man’s free papers, Douglass took the harrowing journey from Maryland by train and ship until reaching New York the next day. The pair married and moved on to Bedford, Massachusetts, to avoid uncovering his fugitive status. With his newfound freedom and new last name, Douglass began his life as the abolitionist crusader we celebrate today.
