How do we speak the language of the community and allow it to be less complicated than everyone makes it sound?” Lecrae also talked about the many benefits that can be reaped when African Americans decide to invest in their communities. “It creates a network. When her brother was killed, everyone asked her, “‘Do you think this will ever happen again?’” “At that time, we [were] thinking it was going to soon end, and it will never happen again,” she said. “Now today, you see them saying ‘Black Lives Matter,’ and that really grieves my spirit. EDITORIAL/COMMENTARY/OPINION As The New Year Begins By Dr. John E. Warren Publisher The end of a year or a day is often a time of reflection on both what has been done and what could have been done better. While we can’t redo yesterday, there is much ahead that we can plan for and impact in terms of tomorrow. In our homes, neighborhoods, towns, cities and states, there is room for improvement and change. The question is will we be a participant or a spectator? We can all be participants by getting involved in the issues around us and impacting the lives of ourselves and others. In the year 2022, we are not only facing the continuation of the COVID virus, but also changes in both the electoral process and the opportunity to change those who hold office but have worked against

our common good. We must register to vote because our lives literally depend on it. We must learn the impact of changes in our electoral districts because so many of us have been gerrymandered out of political power and influence and we must reach out to our brothers and sisters in other states to help them where possible. But before all of this, we must learn to respect each other as we would have others respect us and we must learn to work together even when we can’t see our own personal interest in the issue. So often, it’s about helping others and in doing so, we help ourselves. Starting and ending each day with prayer and the question as to whether we have done something to help somebody other than ourselves is a good place to start. Be blessed this new year, whether or not you are happy, and good things shall follow.

WILLIAMS: Let’s Get Right to It! By E. Faye Williams, President National Congress of Black Women There’s an obvious scheme afoot to return the United States to a period in time where we lived with a completely different social construct and contract. There are those who are diligently working to return us to a time before many of the hard-fought and recently won constitutional protections we (supposedly) now enjoy. The very ones who think we benefit disproportionately are the ones working overtime to steal our hard-earned gains. They pretend not to understand when we point to their efforts to oppress and diminish those rights. They seem to nonchalantly say, “We didn’t really intend for non-white people to ever become equal.” There is one political party that has fully embraced the political and social philosophies of white supremacy. Every time we see news reports, we know which political party that is! They’ve even found help among select people of color who have been adequately rewarded to “move on up and live high on the hog” as payment to deny the circumstance which the masses protest. They know better, but, at the expense of our people, are willing to go along for a self-serving purpose!

Celebration or Lamentation? By James Clingman

How about Self-Determination? Kujichagulia. What have you done in your city to demonstrate your commitment to determining the future of your children? Are others still controlling your destiny? Or have you taken it upon yourself to build and support your own institutions, open and grow new businesses, and create your own jobs? Can you celebrate an accomplishment during 2021 vis-à-vis collective work and responsibility toward one another? Are you celebrating Ujima this year, or are you lamenting about what we have not done? If you have worked collectively on community projects such as neighborhood clean-up, elderly

assistance, or tutoring, then your Kwanzaa celebration is in order. Now, here’s my favorite: Cooperative Economics, Ujamaa. Have you done anything cooperatively this year to increase the economic viability and stability of your community? Have you pooled any of your money to finance a project or to form an investment group to assist micro businesses? Have you purchased Black manufactured products on a consistent basis? What have you done to build and develop your community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness? In other words, what is your purpose, Nia, and have you actualized that purpose? If you have, then you definitely have something to celebrate. Have you created anything lately? What has been the level of your creativity, Kuumba, this past year? Is there anything, not necessarily something material, that you created to benefit your community? Maybe it was a new financial institution, a volunteer food service program for those in need, or maybe it was a new resolve and commitment to do better than you did the previous year. Creativity covers a multitude of endeavors. Finally, how much faith, Imani, do you have in the things you are celebrating? How much faith do you have in yourself? How much faith do you have in your brothers and sisters? How much faith do you have in the Creator’s ability to carry you through in times of struggle? Are you one of “little faith,” or is your faith sufficient to support you in your quest to fulfill the other six principles of Kwanzaa? Aren’t you tired of mere spoken

PRAYERS AND COVID-19 PREVENTION:

KWANZAA 2021–

For fifty years Black people in the United States have celebrated the seven principles of Kwanzaa. Established by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966, Kwanzaa is an African American and PanAfrican holiday celebrated by millions throughout the world African community. Kwanzaa brings a cultural message which speaks to the best of what it means to be African and human in the fullest sense. Our obvious support and celebration of this occasion suggests our commitment, not only to the principles of the Nguzo Saba, but also to their fruition. Thus, we ask you: What Kwanzaa success will you celebrate this year? What have you done during the year that qualifies as a celebratory event during Kwanzaa? Have you achieved Unity, Umoja, among Black folks in your locale? Are you unified to the point that you love one another more and support one another more? Do you have proof that you have unified around some pertinent issue or cause? If so, then let the celebration begin. If not, let the lamentation begin.

Sadly, the other political party seemingly does not recognize the current and ongoing threat to our democracy. Their infighting and constant focus on two recalcitrant members provide the perfect example of an unforced, self-induced error. I do not negate the importance of the progressive work being done, but there is an unacceptable naivety of blindly working for progressive outcomes while the mechanics of their destruction are being codified daily by political opponents in increasing numbers of

states. Even a blind man can see that Republicans are committed to converting our democracy into a fascist, permanent majority.

words? Aren’t you just a little weary of empty rhetoric, events based on words followed by little or no subsequent action? Wouldn’t you like to see us, after fifty years of celebrating Kwanzaa, be able to point to something we built and sustained because of our celebration of values we hold so dear? After fifty years of celebrating, we should be able to look back and revel in the things we have accomplished through our celebration of Kwanzaa. What will you see when you look back this year? If nothing is there except a mere celebration of principles rather than progress, then you have some work to do. Use this year’s Kwanzaa to act upon the seven principles so that this time next year you will have some tangible accomplishment to celebrate. Again, my favorite principle is Ujamaa, so I’d like to offer something you can do to celebrate it. Go to www.iamoneofthemillion. com and purchase a few bags of Sweet Unity Coffee for yourself and for Kwanzaa gifts for a few friends. Then celebrate by toasting “sweet unity” among our people. The founder of Kwanzaa, Maulana Karenga, did more than just come up with some nice words and principles for us to recognize and follow during this season. He has shared many words with us on how we must conduct ourselves at all times—not just during Kwanzaa. One thing he warned against was Black folks getting stuck in a place where most of what we do is lament “litanies of lost battles.” Kwanzaa must be a true celebration of production and progress, not just another lamentation of having lost.

Holiday celebrations have come, and while many families have safely gathered this season, we know that COVID-19 has not taken a vacation. The Omicron variant now poses a new danger. And cases have begun a gradual rise again here in California and around the country. Therefore, we can never be too careful when it comes to keeping our loved ones safe and healthy. The death rate resulting from COVID-19 is 15% higher for Black Californians than the statewide average, according to numbers from the California Department of Public Health. Black pastors across California recognize the urgency of this threat. We have accepted the responsibility of this fight, and we understand as faith leaders in our communities that we must combine faith with action. Prayers for healing and health must be backed up by a plan for protection and prevention. That is why dozens of faith leaders across our state have worked together to open the doors of our churches for convenient COVID19 testing, and some sites offer vaccinations. This effort to keep our congregations and our neighborhoods safe has been made possible with the support of our testing partner Color and the California Department of Public Health. The pastors in our network, their congregations, staff, and volunteers have done at our churches and in our community have done

an excellent job. Their effort has contributed in no small way to the high COVID-19 vaccination rate and low positivity rate we now have in California. We are truly proud and grateful. As we mark the end of 2021 and usher in the new year, some of us may get together with people we love to reflect, celebrate, give thanks, and to ask God for grace and wisdom in 2022. During this time, we must be accountable to each other and prioritize safety, especially for those among us who are aging or otherwise fragile. As our slogan tells us, “Don’t guess, get the test” before going back to work or school. Look up one of our centers in your community to get vaccinated and tested. It is the surest way that we can stem the spread of this virus. As we walk into the uncertainties of the next year, we must decide to renew our hope and lead with faith even stronger than we have had this past year. With that resolve, committing ourselves to keeping each other and our communities safe will be easy. Remember, we can push through this pandemic together and we can beat it. The Rev. Gerald L. ARRANGEMENTS BY ANDERSON-RAGSDALE MORTUARY

Funeral services were held on December 29, 2021 at Memory Chapel of Anderson Ragsdale Mortuary with the burial following at Greenwood Bible Mausoleum. Final arrangements were entrusted to Anderson-Ragsdale Mortuary. GEAN RAY DAVIS was born on September 27, 1933 in Austin, Texas, to Frank Davis and Martha Bedford Davis. He had a twin sister, Geanie Mae, plus 6 other siblings. He came to San Diego by the way of his military enlistment. He proudly served his country in the US Navy from 1954 to 1975, retiring with 20 years of service. He was a cook on a variety of submarines – Sperry, Queenfish, and Nimitz. After his military retirement, Gean was employed by the Chula Vista School District in the Maintenance and Custodial Services department as a custodian. Gean enjoyed working with his hands. You could always find him gardening, performing landscape around his home, and doing other household projects for enhancements, maintenance, or repairs. Gean married Lela Virginia Varner. To this union there were no children, but he was a devoted father to his step-daughter, Ava Johnson. In 2018, Gean fell ill, but was always in good spirits! His loving and dedicated nephew, Billy Moreland II, was his side-kick/buddy and primary caretaker until his death. Gean loved to joke and poke fun. He enjoyed debating politics. He was an avid football and baseball fan. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ava Johnson and his parents: Frank and Martha Davis, his twin sister, Geanie Mae Edmonson, sisters: Rosetta Bedford, Sally Ann Davis, brothers: John D. Davis, Douglas Davis, Ashes Davis and Ray Davis. All were born and raised in Austin, Texas. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Lela V. Davis, nieces: Marilyn Jackson (Al), Debra McCorvey (Willie), nephew, Larry Manor (Verna), sister-in-law, Elmarie Moreland, brother-in-law, and shipmate Billy Moreland Sr., nieces: Ingrid Johnson (Gerald), Elaine Watson and Janice Thompson, nephews: Leon and Willie Edward Watson and a host of family and friends.

DAVID ODUM was born on May 16, 1939 in Mansfield, Louisiana, to Eula Peguese and Montague Odum, he is one of four kids: Bettye Williams, Dorothy Williams (proceed in death), Montague Odum Jr (proceed in death). After enlisting in the Navy at the age of 17, he spent 29 years in service. He received multiple awards and merits, he was a specialized instructor teaching electrician apprentices. After retiring from the Navy as a master chief electrician at the age of 48 he continued his work as an electrician until his full retirement in 2001. David was a hard working, loving person who loved to play dominoes, loved to be the grill master at all the events. David will truly be missed by family and friends. On December 2, 2021, David Odum was called home to eternal rest. He leaves to cherish his wonderful memories,his beloved wife of 61 years, Margaret Odum, 4 daughters: Gwen Coleman, Sharon (Jerry)Sumpter, Cynthia (James) Williams and Dorothy Odum (proceed in death),5 grandkids: Shayla Garcia, David Odum, Tyshawn Odum, Morriss Biglow and Caleb Sumpter, 1 great grandson, Kayden Garcia and a host of family and close friends.

The Fifth Annual Shane Harris C ommunity Christmas Day Breakfast and Gift Giveaway was held at the Black Contractors Association Building on Christmas Day. The event was a gathering for foster youth and families, homeless and runaway youth, and those members of the community who showed up for this very special event.

There were over 500 people including the children, families, and individuals that came out for a very hardy breakfast followed by a gift giveaway that had many carrying all the items they could hold. Rev. Harris, wearing a Santa’s cap, also presented those he identified as the first Black Santa (Dr. William Tayari Howard) and the first Black Mrs. Claus ( Dr. LaWana Richmond). There were a host of Santa’s helpers directing traffic, serving food, and passing out beautifully wrapped gifts. It is reported that wrapping the gifts alone took three days of preparation.

Outside the BCA building, there was a real patch of snow surrounded by Christmas trees, in which the children could play and throw snowballs. Clearly, a lot of love and hard work went into this event which last year, due to COVID, could only give away toys in a drive-thru outside the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation. All participants this year were masked except when eating. There were many individuals and organizations that contributed to the success of this event and Rev. Harris made every effort to identify each and every one of them.

On December 14, the Board of Education announced the selection of the following individuals as finalists for the superintendent position: Dr. Lamont A. Jackson & Dr. Susan Enfield. The board will officially introduce the permanent superintendent at the State of the District on January 18. The superintendent, under the direction of the Board of Education, implements the school board’s vision and policies by making day-to-day decisions about educational programs, spending, staff, and facilities. The superintendent works with school leaders to serve the needs of students and meet the district goals. The superintendent must also respond to the demands of all the other constituencies and interest groups in the district: teachers, students, parents, staff, advocates, and the community at large. The superintendent considers how to use the financial and human resources of the district to achieve the best results.

Assemblymember Weber hosted her inaugural Winter Literacy Book Giveaway at the Boys and Girls Club of Encanto and distributed thousands of donated books to any child present. “Reading during the academic breaks ensures that information is not lost, and it also helps close the achievement gap,” said Assemblymember Weber in a press release. “I believe it is important for our youth to continue engaging academically, and I’m so glad we were able to contribute to the

The event was held for the first time at Waterfront Park, with booths set up and spread across the lawn in front of the beautiful bayfront.

The Nile Sisters Development Initiative launched LearnMore, a vocational nurse assistanttraining program to help underserved communities prepare for i n - d e mand he a lt hc are careers. LearnMore began training students over a year ago during the height of the COVID -19 pandemic to break into the in-demand healthcare workforce.

Funding from the County has allowed the program to offer more classes and academic support services to attract and train more students who will go on to provide much-needed healthcare to San Diegans throughout the County. The program is designed as an accelerated nurse assistant training course for candidates seeking nurse assistant certification by the State of California. “Everyone is welcome at LearnMore,” said Elizabeth Lou, Nile Sisters’ founder

and executive director “We are especially focused on those in hard-to-reach and underrepresented populations who want to develop new skills for in-demand and rewarding healthcare careers.”

Between food, shop vendors, kids games, and a beer garden, visitors were treated to a festive and fun afternoon.

The Soul Swap Meet also partnered with The Harvey Family Foundation to raise donation funds for the local nonprofit. The Harvey Foundation used the proceeds to host their 2nd annual toy giveaway at New Creation Church the next day.

An antiviral pill from Merck also is expected to soon win authorization. But Pfizer’s drug is all but

certain to be the preferred option because of its mild side effects and superior effectiveness, including a nearly 90% reduction in hospitalizations and deaths among patients most likely to get severe disease. The FDA authorized Pfizer’s drug for adults and children ages 12 and older with a positive COVID-19 test and early symptoms who face the highest risks of hospitalization. That includes older people and those with conditions like obesity and heart disease. Children eligible for the drug must weigh at least 88 pounds.

The pills from both Pfizer and Merck are expected to be effective against omicron because they don’t target the spike protein where most of the variant’s worrisome mutations reside. Health experts agree that vaccination remains the best way to protect against COVID19. But with roughly 40 million American adults still unvaccinated, effective drugs will be critical to blunting the current and future waves of infection. Pfizer’s pill still comes with its own challenges. Paxlovid has only proven effective if given within five days of symptoms appearing. With testing supplies stretched, experts worry it may be unrealis-

tic for patients to self-diagnose, get tested, see a physician and pick up a prescription within that narrow window. The FDA based its decision on company results from a 2,250-patient trial that showed the pill cut hospitalizations and deaths by 89% when given to people with mild-tomoderate COVID-19 within three days of symptoms. Less than 1% of patients taking the drug were hospitalized and none died at the end of the 30-day study period, compared with 6.5% of patients hospitalized in the group getting a dummy pill, which included nine deaths.

The Governor said the state is also ratcheting up its efforts to keep kids safe and schools open. “We will help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our communities by making at-home testing kits available to every K-12 public school student as they head back to the classroom from winter break,” Newsom continued. At the press conference, Newsom made clear his intention to continue in-person schooling. “After our kids have enjoyed the holiday with family and friends … we want to make sure they come back in as good a shape as they left meaning we want to make sure that we are testing our kids and preparing them to come back to in-person instruction,” Newsom said. In addition, the governor announced that the state will be extending hours of operations for testing sites. He said California has over 6,000 testing sites, about 30% of all the nation's testing sites. “California continues to lead,” Newsom said. “As of today, we have the lowest positivity rate in America.” As of Sunday, Dec. 26, California had a 5.4% test positivity rate for the last 8 days. That number is up about 2.4 % from the last week, according to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). “We continue to lead the nation in terms of administered doses of the vaccine and we continue to do more than most other states in promoting not only the safety and efficacy of our vaccines but promoting boosters,” he continued. 78.9 % of all Californians have been vaccinated, CDPH reports.
