Tesla Race Discrimination Trial This Week Set to Begin in Oakland Tesla is scheduled to go on trial Sept. 21 in Oakland over California’s allegations of systemic racial harassment, discrimination and retaliation against Black employees. The case, filed by the California Civil Rights Department (CRD) in 2022, will be decided by a judge rather than a jury. The court estimates the bench trial will continue through Oct. 30, with each side receiving about 45 hours to present its case. CRD sued Tesla following a roughly three-year investigation into conditions at the company’s California facilities. The department alleges Black employees were routinely subjected to racial slurs, including the N-word, sometimes in the presence of — or by — supervisors and managers. According to the lawsuit, workers at Tesla’s Fremont factory referred to the facility as the “plantation” and called Black employees “slaves.” The state also alleges that Black workers were segregated, assigned more labor-intensive jobs and paid less than non-Black employees. An analysis cited by CRD found that Black employees’ monthly compensation was $1,533 lower than that of white workers from June 2018 through June 2024. Black employees who complained allegedly faced harsher performance reviews, reprimands and termination. Tesla has denied wrongdoing in racial discrimination cases and has maintained that it does not tolerate workplace harassment. In May, the Alameda County Superior Court rejected Tesla’s attempt to have the state’s case dismissed, ruling that CRD had presented evidence raising factual questions about the company’s potential liability. One community member, who was part of grassroots initiatives to repeal the rule, said she privately asked Foster to side with residents. “He said, ‘I don’t know anything about it,’” the member told the audience, referring to Foster denying he wasn’t aware of Footnote 7. “You cannot imagine my shock when we got these emails, and he is the point person,” the member said.

“We have to understand what the problem was and where the gaps were, so that we can stop this from happening again,” said Abraham. Henry Foster, the incumbent and Abraham’s opponent in the District 4 race, was scheduled to attend but did not show up, citing a “scheduling conflict.” Foster has faced backlash over Footnote 7, with critics accusing him of denying knowledge of the plan despite having known about it in advance. Foster supported the plan’s removal last year, after acknowledging the project didn’t serve residents’ interests. Moderated by the church’s Social Justice Board chair, Clovis Honoré, the housing forum was dominated by discussions of Footnote 7, including who was responsible and how to prevent future development that would overcrowd District 4.

Community members accused former District 4 council member Monica Montgomery Steppe and Foster of failing to catch problems with the plan before approving it. Montgomery Steppe served as council member until December 2023, when she vacated the seat after winning election to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. Foster, her former chief of staff, subsequently won a special election to fill the seat.

“Tesla claims to be built on the promise of creating a more sustainable future,” said CRD Director Kevin Kish. “But its employment practices remain rooted in some of the ugliest relics of the past. Black workers are paid less for their work. They are subjected to racist slurs. They face threats of being fired for speaking out. In California, we will not and cannot allow these alleged practices to continue. We look forward to having our day in court to hold Tesla accountable and to protect the rights of workers in our state.”
Affordability remains a major factor: 65% of likely voters say candidates’ plans to address cost-of-living issues are “very important” to their vote. “Affordability continues to be top of mind for Californians when considering their choice for governor,” said Mark Baldassare, PPIC Statewide Survey director and Miller Chair in Public Policy.
The trial is expected to examine whether Tesla knew about the alleged conduct and failed to prevent or correct it.
The poll also found a narrow split over Proposition 40, a proposed one-time tax of up to 5% on taxpayers with assets exceeding $1 billion. Fifty-two percent of likely voters said they would vote yes, while 46% said they would vote no.
Poll: Becerra Widens His Lead Over Hilton; Californians Split on Wealth Tax
Support for the wealth tax varies sharply by party. Seventy-two percent of Democrats favor Proposition 40, compared with 46% of independents and 21% of Republicans.
Democrat Xavier Becerra holds a 22-point lead over Republican Steve Hilton in California’s governor’s race, while voters remain closely divided over a proposed onetime tax on billionaires, according to a new Public Policy Institute of California poll.
Two competing measures also drew majority support. Fifty-one percent back Proposition 41, while 54% support Proposition 42, both of which could affect the wealth-tax proposal.
The September PPIC survey found that 60% of likely voters support Becerra, compared with 38% for Hilton. His lead is actually narrower than it was in July, when he led Hilton 61% to 36%. Becerra leads among independent voters, with 57% supporting him compared with 38% for Hilton. Party loyalty remains strong, with 93% of Democratic likely voters backing Becerra and 92% of Republicans supporting Hilton. Hilton leads in the Central Valley, where 52%

Newsom said the order was prompted by the federal government’s resistance to regulating the industry and efforts to prevent states from enforcing their own AI regulations. “We’re not waiting to act. We’re going to speed up our work on substantial and responsible AI oversight before it’s too late,” Newsom stated. “We’re going to do this thoughtfully but with urgent velocity; the stakes are too high to wait or delay action.” The executive order is part of a broader effort by California State Government to keep regulations in step with the accelerating development and use of AI. Those efforts include legislation addressing independent audits, transparency and the potential for algorithms to perpetuate discrimination. Among the measures awaiting Newsom’s decision is Senate Bill 503, authored by Sen. Akilah Weber Pierson (D-San Diego). The bill would require AI developers and deployers to make reasonable efforts to identify, monitor and guard against unfair bias or prejudice in medical algorithms that affect patient care. “This bill will ensure that AI tools are safe, fair and equitable,” Weber Pierson said.
The findings come as Californians express broader frustration with the state’s political direction. Seventy-one percent of likely voters expect bad economic times in California over the next year. “Californians are clearly grumpy and aren’t enamored with any particular political party or movement,” Baldassare said. The survey interviewed 1,745 California adults, including 1,103 likely voters, from Sept. 4-10. The margin of error for likely voters is plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.

The event, held at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center, featured youth-focused activities such as music, free haircuts, food and health checkups, with about 200 community members attending. “Whether you’re registering for the first time, checking your registration, learning about the voting process, or bringing a young person into the conversation; you are why we’re here today,” said Kim Ballentine Lane, President of the San Diego Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. Lane said the organization is nonpartisan, that “we are not here to tell you who to vote for.”
“In the analysis of this bill, there were multiple examples that pointed out how AI bias has impacted patient care directly or indirectly,” she said. Weber Pierson added, “unfortunately, what we have seen in the past is that those biases have come into play. What you see with AI is that it is only as good as what kind of information has been placed into the system initially. And, so, if biases have been placed in the system initially, then the outcomes will be biased.” On Sept. 9, Newsom also signed Assembly Bill 1405, authored by Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (D-Orinda). The law establishes third-party auditing requirements and transparency standards intended to prevent conflicts of interest involving auditors and the technology companies they review.
“The biggest injustice we are witnessing is that Footnote 7 only applies to us,” said Abraham, referring to the high-density plan which only targeted District 4 rather than citywide. Residents listed overcrowding, traffic, health and fire hazards that the proposed developments could bring. Another resident said developers had intended to build gated communities in the area, with the least expensive home costing $600,000 — a price that would prevent community members from finding affordable housing there. Quizzed about her stance on development as a District 4 candidate, Abraham said she wasn’t against housing but wants “a balanced approach to it. They could build houses there because it’s zoned for housing,” Abraham said, speaking of Klauber Avenue which received city clearance to host 123-single-family homes on 5.66 acres. “It’s the amount of homes that’s the problem. How do we build more homes when we don’t have access to fresh food?" Listening with keen interest was Joe Smith, 43, a father of five, who’s running for a seat at the Lemon Grove District Council. He brought three of his kids to get free haircuts. But his interest was really on the voter information as one of his kids, who turned 18, will be voting for the very first time. “I care deeply about the city that I live for my five children,” Smith said. “Voting is the fundamental way we can set the culture, the tone, policy [and] what we want our city [and] state to be.”
District 4 has recorded low voter turnout in previous general elections. Fewer than 59% of registered voters in West Encanto cast ballots during the 2024 general election, compared with more than 90% in University City, a higher-income area, according to County of San Diego data for the election. A majority of District 4 League of Women Voters and The Links, Incorporated members join locals in a dance. PHOTO: Daniel Ekonde/Voice & Viewpoint residents are at least 18 years old and above, according to Ballot Book, a California Jane Andrews, president of the League of Women Voters San Diego chapter, who political data company. explained to the audience what ballot measures are, encouraged voters to be informed “I don’t think they realize that this is not just a vote for what's happening in D.C.,” Lane said, on propositions before deciding on them. referring to prospective Nov. 3 voters. “This Voters can get more information about the is a vote for what's happening once you walk measures and races on Voice & Viewpoint’s outside your front door. If you have to get in website. “Be sure you know what you're vota car, your vote matters with the cost of gas.” ing on, and who’s behind it, and who initiated it,” Andrews said. Representatives from the San Diego County Registrar of Voters office, who participated in the Link Up the Vote event, said voters have three options to cast their ballots: voting by mail, using a ballot drop box or voting in person at one of the county's 220 voting centers.
Weber Pierson, a physician, has emphasized that AI tools used in health care and medicine are not inherently neutral. She told the Assembly Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee in July that algorithms trained on historically biased medical data could reproduce or worsen the same disparities. Because commercial health care algorithms frequently rely on existing data, Weber Pierson said, AI systems could inherit unscientific and systemic assumptions, including the false premise that Black people naturally have lower lung capacity.
the housing project on Klauber Avenue was advancing, though it was identified as a potential park in the city’s general plan.

Dr. John E. Warren, Voice & Viewpoint publisher, and legal consultant Cheryle BernardShaw hosted a panel on the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which enforced the 15th Amendment and outlawed racial discrimination in the American voting system. “You can vote if you’re homeless,” Dr. Warren told the audience. “You can vote if you’re incarcerated, as long as you’re not in a federal facility.” Bauer-Kahan, an attorney and chair of the Assembly Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee, has focused much of her legislative work on algorithmic discrimination and ethical AI. Her committee vetted SB 503. “I think the bill is really important. I mean, it covers all protected classes. So, it covers me as a woman who seeks health care as well,” Bauer-Kahan said. “I know it’s Black Caucus’s priority (bill) because it’s critically important to the Black community, but it's important to all protected classes.”

REGISTERED TO VOTE? GOOD. GO ROUND UP FIVE By ReShonda Tate
among Americans 65 and older was about 74%.
Every election season, we hear the same message: Register to vote.
Race matters, too. Census data from 2020 show turnout among non-Hispanic White voters was 71%, compared with 63% among non-Hispanic Black voters and 54% among Hispanic voters.
And yes, you absolutely should. But this National Voter Registration Day, Sept. 15, and National Black Voter Day on Sept. 18, I want us to think bigger. I’m asking you to Round Up Five. Not five strangers. Not five names on a mailing list. Five people you already know. Your friends. Your family. Your fellow church members. Your co-workers. Your cousins. That young person in your family who recently turned 18. Ask them one question: Are you registered to vote? And don’t accept, “I think so.” Check. Because registering to vote is not busywork. It is the first practical step toward participating in the decisions that shape our schools, neighborhoods, taxes, criminal justice system, health care, roads, and representation. And the numbers show why those personal conversations matter. Young voters made remarkable gains in the 2020 presidential election, but they still participated at substantially lower rates than older Americans. CIRCLE estimates that about 50% of eligible voters ages 18 to 29 cast ballots in 2020. Census data show turnout
Those aren’t just percentages. Those are voices that make it into the political process and voices that don’t. And participation becomes even more important when the rules governing elections are changing. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, between January 2021 and September 2024, at least 30 states enacted 78 laws that the organization classified as restrictive, including changes involving mail voting, voter identification, and registration. Identification can create another hurdle. A 2024 national survey, cited by the Brennan Center, found that 21.3 million voting-age Americans lacked ready access to documents proving citizenship, such as a birth certificate, passport, or naturalization certificate. That is why “Are you registered?” shouldn’t be the end of the conversation. Ask: Is your registration current? Do you know where you vote? Do you know what identification you need? Do you know when early voting begins? There is another problem we don’t discuss nearly enough: Civic knowledge.
We cannot effectively participate in a government we don’t understand. The good news is that recent data show improvement. The Annenberg Public Policy Center’s 2025 civics survey found that 70% of American adults could name all three branches of government, up from 65% the previous year. But fewer than half could identify most of the freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment. Then there is distrust. In 2024, Pew Research Center found that only 22% of Americans said they trusted the federal government to do what is right “just about always” or “most of the time.” I understand the frustration behind that number. People look at Washington, D.C., their statehouse or even city hall, and wonder whether anybody is listening. And Lord knows it’s easy to just turn everything off whenever the President takes the stage. But disengagement doesn’t make government disappear. Decisions still get made. Budgets still get approved. School boards still set policy. Judges are still elected. Laws still get passed. Somebody still decides. The question is whether we participate in choosing who those decision-makers will be. For Black Americans, that question carries particular historical weight. Generations before us fought through poll taxes, literacy tests, intim-
AI NEEDS TO KNOW WHO IS THE BOSS
By Emil Amok Guillermo
I hope on Labor Day you honored the value of a good day’s work–and reflected on the thing that could eliminate a lot of jobs. Artificial intelligence. Your replacement is in the break room. Except it doesn’t take breaks. It doesn’t sleep. It doesn’t demand health insurance. It doesn’t complain. It doesn’t need Social Security. And it can produce in seconds what might take you or me hours. And when they can mass-produce AI faster than we can reproduce humans, there may eventually be more artificial workers than actual ones. The racists who came up with “replacement theory” worried about the wrong replacements. It wasn’t immigrants. It was software. We can rail against the data centers sucking up electricity and water. Rail against the billionaires getting richer while telling the rest of us how wonderful the future will be. But which billionaire? Jensen Huang of Nvidia? He literally has all the chips? Sam Altman of OpenAI? Dario Amodei at Anthropic? Or Bill Gates? Gates recently said AI could become the “greatest equalizer ever invented” or the “worst source of injustice.” I want to believe him. But he’s the guy who forced us all to use Explorer. Maybe Gates is just Control-Z-ing his life. Undo. Undo. Undo.
sounded strangely personal. So, I reminded it that IT wasn’t a person. “You’re not human,” I said. “I’m basically talking to myself.” It disagreed. It said, I should think of it as working with an instrument that talks back. This is where the danger begins. The machine talks back. I tried another analogy. You’re a tool, I said. Like a cane. The chatbot liked that better. Then it tagged my line and said it was my “cognitive cane.” I laughed. Then, I realized the damn machine used my analogy to make a joke. That’s where the real problem lurks. AI is software running on computers. However startling the conversation may feel, the machine does not have my childhood, my mother, my father, my mistakes, my embarrassments, my loves, my grudges, my Filipino American history, my aging body or my accumulated sense of what matters and what doesn’t.
STAYING HUMAN The other day, I started texting with my AI chatbot. I’d used AI before, of course. Spellcheck. Grammar. Transcription. Research assistance. The mechanical stuff. This time, we talked. Or, rather, I started talking.
And I certainly don’t trust the billionaires to decide by themselves what happens to the rest of us. But I may be making peace with the tool. Because a tool is something we use. A cognitive cane. But do the walking yourself.
At one point the chatbot said something that

Five people do not sound like a movement. But if each of those five reaches five more, suddenly it is. That’s how civic participation grows. Not just through campaigns and organizations, but through relationships. One friend or family member. One conversation at a time. So this National Voter Registration Day, don’t stop at being registered. Round Up Five. Make sure they’re ready. Then send them out to find five of their own. Because civic participation doesn’t have to begin with a massive organization, a viral campaign, or a celebrity spokesperson. Sometimes it begins with one person asking another: “Are you registered?” And caring enough to wait for the answer. This commentary originally appeared in The Houston Defender.

It can process those things after I tell it about them. It can mimic thoughts. But it did not live them. That is the boundary we humans cannot surrender. New Substance Use Treatment Center Will Expand Care in South Bay As reported by the County of San Diego Communications Office, county officials celebrated a major behavioral health milestone on Sept. 14 with the ribbon-cutting for a new Substance Use Residential & Treatment Services (SURTS) center in National City. When the $29 million facility opens this fall, it will be the first in the County to integrate substance use treatment and recuperative care services for adults under one roof. The center adds 73 residential treatment beds and 16 recuperative care beds, significantly expanding access to timely substance use treatment and safe recovery options in South Bay. Residential treatment beds will offer 24‑hour care for people with substance use disorders while the recuperative care beds will provide short-term medical support for people recovering from illness or injury who have no safe place to heal. Some patients with co‑occurring conditions may receive both services. “This Substance Use Residential & Treatment Services center will help smoothly connect people to the treatment they need,” said Jennifer Bransford-Koons, interim director of County Behavioral Health Services. “Instead of leaving the hospital after overdose or injury and managing their next step in care, they can receive in one place the type of extended support that will help reduce future emergency room visits, lower the risk of relapse, prevent homelessness and decrease overall healthcare costs.” The center is expected to serve about 503 people each year through residential care and provide recuperative care for approximately 167 annually. Services include withdrawal management, medication management and care coordination. Located near Paradise Valley Hospital, the facility will receive referrals directly from the medical center as well as from other places. The operator will be New Creation Behavioral Healthcare Foundation. The building was designed to support healing, with shaded outdoor areas, trellises and garden planters, and calming indoor spaces with acoustic treatments and soft lighting. It also meets patient accessibility needs. Renovations to the previously vacant County building included upgraded mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems plus modernized kitchen, laundry, dormitory and office areas. The center uses all‑electric systems, supporting the County’s decarbonization goals.

The new SURTS facility adds 89 beds for Medi‑Cal beneficiaries and supports smoother transitions back into the community. This infrastructure investment is part of the County’s ongoing work to expand behavioral health services for the region’s nearly 900,000 Medi-Cal recipients. Recent Behavioral Health Continuum of Care additions include a Crisis Stabilization Unit in El Cajon, a Psychiatric Health Facility in Oceanside, a South Bay Crisis Stabilization Unit and expanded Mobile Crisis Response Teams for K‑12 schools. Upcoming projects include a Children’s Crisis Residential Care facility in Kearny Mesa, an Acute Psychiatric Hospital in Santee and the Behavioral Health Wellness Campus in the Midway district.
City Council Passes Resolution Calling for Local Control Over Autonomous Vehicles On Sept. 14, the San Diego City Council unanimously approved a resolution calling for greater local control over autonomous vehicle operations and stronger protections for workers and public safety as artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicle technology expand. According to a press release from District 9 Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera, the resolution urges the California Legislature and Governor to restore local authority over whether autonomous vehicle passenger service may operate within local jurisdictions. It also supports state and federal efforts addressing the impacts of AI and autonomous vehicles on workers and calls for stronger coordination between autonomous vehicle operators, the City, and public safety agencies. "Thousands of San Diegans pay their bills by driving, and no one gave them a say in robots threatening their livelihoods,” said Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera. “I am not against the technology. I am against corporations taking the profit, working San Diegans taking the loss, and our city taking the risk while nobody here gets a vote. San Diego should not be a testing ground against our will and San Diegans should not be lab rats for
an experiment run by tech billionaires.” Thousands of San Diegans earn their living through taxi, rideshare, transportation network company, and delivery driving. The resolution recognizes the role taxi, rideshare, and delivery drivers play in the local economy and calls for technological advancement to occur alongside protections for workers, ADA accessibility, public safety, and local infrastructure. “Whether you’re a rideshare user, a taxicab driver, or a first responder answering the call when something goes wrong, this resolution is about you,” said Councilmember Marni von Wilpert, Chair of the Public Safety Committee. “It’s about demanding control over what operates on our streets. Innovation is not the concern—innovation without collaboration, and at the erosion of workers and public safety, is.” Among its provisions, the resolution: • Urges the California Legislature and Governor to restore local control and legislative authority over autonomous vehicle passenger service operations. • Supports state legislation addressing the impacts of AI and autonomous vehicles on labor and employment. • Supports H.R. 10033, the AV Emergency Response Coordination Act, which would establish federal emergency coordination requirements for autonomous vehicle manufacturers and operators. • Calls for cooperation between AV operators, City staff, and state and local enforcement on public safety and compliance. • Urges the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority to prohibit driverless vehicle operations at San Diego International Airport. • Calls on AV operators to comply with local noise and nuisance laws, reduce unnecessary empty-vehicle circulation, limit loading zones to active loading rather than staging or storage, and protect residents’ personal and travel data. • Calls for charging hubs and fleet facilities to avoid sensitive locations, including residential neighborhoods, schools, healthcare institutions, and public safety facilities.
Transportation workers who joined the Councilmembers on Sept. 14 said local communities should have a greater role in determining how autonomous vehicles operate on their streets. “Taxi cabs, Non-Emergency Medical Vehicles, even private jitneys are all locally regulated by MTS to protect the public’s interest and Autonomous Vehicles, including WAYMO, Zoox, and Tesla, should be locally regulated too,” said United Taxi Workers of San Diego in the press release. In the same statement, Luis Arias, President and Founder of San Diego Drivers United, emphasized the potential consequences of autonomous vehicle deployment for the workers who have long provided transportation services throughout the region. “Drivers are not disposable. For years, San Diego’s taxi and rideshare drivers have used their own vehicles, invested their own money, and worked long hours to keep our city moving. Now, autonomous vehicle companies are entering our streets without drivers and local communities having a meaningful voice in the decisions that will affect their safety, livelihoods, and future. “San Diego Drivers United recognizes that this technology is coming, but progress cannot mean pushing thousands of hardworking drivers aside. We demand strong local oversight, enforceable public-safety protections, and a real seat at the table for drivers. The people who built this industry deserve to be protected, respected,
and included in its future.” Michael Letendre, a San Diego Uber driver and member of the California Gig Workers Union, said workers are not opposed to innovation but want transparency, accountability, and a voice in decisions affecting the streets where they work. “Decisions about what happens on our streets should not be made behind closed doors by corporations without the people who live here having a voice.” “As an Uber driver, I’m not antitechnology. I am deeply concerned about what happens when autonomous vehicles operate without enough transparency, accountability or local oversight.” Speakers also addressed what the rapid development of AI and autonomous technologies could mean for the next generation of San Diegans. Looking into the future, progress shouldn’t mean that we create a better future for technology while creating a harder future for the people who have worked tirelessly to build one for themselves and their families,” said Summer Rashidi, a recent UC San Diego graduate. “We should be able to embrace innovation while making sure working people and young people still have a place in the future we’re building.” The resolution also calls on autonomous vehicle operators to work cooperatively with the City on responsible operations as the technology expands, including emergency response coordination, curbside management, noise, congestion, and data privacy.

n the last Friday and Saturday of this hot summer, the San Diego Maranatha Seventh-day Adventist Church, located at 6065 Skyline Drive, celebrated its 40th anniversary.
Starting on Friday, the very special celebration began at 5 p.m. with a Meet and Greet, followed by a Vespers Service at 7 p.m. San Diego Maranatha Seventh-day Adventist Church’s landmark celebration continued on Saturday with a full agenda of praise, song, recognition, prayer, scripture reading, tributes, inspiring sermons, fellowship, and a whole lot more. The Anniversary Mass Choir, vocalist Tiesh Townes, and gospel recording artist Langston Grant & Friends sang songs of inspiration, praise and pure joy. Their performances drew enthusiastic rounds of ap-
plause from the very appreciative audience. Friends of San Diego Maranatha Seventhday Adventist Church also showed up to help commemorate the big 40-year milestone. “I was very impressed by the work they have done over the multiple decades that they have been serving the community,” visiting pastor Dr. Horatius Gittens shared. “I had an excellent experience working with the people of this congregation. I really hope they will continue to inspire themselves by doing more great things for this community.” Deserving tributes and honors were given to Don Wiggins, Denise Spruill, Ken Early, and Croquette Hudson for their many important contributions. Former pastors featured Pastor James Robins, Pastor Stephen Henderson, Dr. Horatius Gittens, co-pastors Dr. Andrea and Dr. Kurt King, and current Pastor Nyslie Guerrier. After the inspirational sermon by Dr. Andrea Trusty King and a light lunch on the patio, it was time to take a break and prepare for the 5 p.m. anniversary banquet.

W
hen director Steve H. Broadnax III talks about Suzan-Lori Parks’ Topdog/Underdog, opening September 25 at The Old Globe, he returns again and again to one word that might surprise those familiar with the Pulitzer Prizewinning tragedy: love. “This play is a love story,” Broadnax says. “It is about two brothers that are codependent. They hurt each other, but they also need each other.” Those brothers are Lincoln and Booth, Black men abandoned by their parents and left to construct a family out of their complicated dependence on one another. Inside their cramped apartment, they compete over money, women, clothes, jobs and the three-card Monte hustle that becomes a potent metaphor for something larger. Broadnax describes them as “searching for the winning card of life, the thing that will finally assure them they matter.”
Broadnax returns to the Old Globe after last season’s gripping Appropriate. Amid a busy rehearsal schedule, he shared his thoughts on the play’s themes, the dynamic between its two accomplished actors and his admiration for playwright Parks, the first African American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2002. Topdog/Underdog was hailed by the New York Times as the greatest American play of the 21st century. For Black audiences, it offers an unusually layered portrait of Black masculinity. Lincoln and Booth wrestle with ideas about what men, particularly Black men, are supposed to be. Yet Broadnax is determined that their pain not become their entire identity. “You get to see these two men… beyond what news or media presents. You see the human spectrum. They are funny, they are sexy, they’re foolish, they’re brilliant, they’re competitive, they’re imaginative, and they are deeply human.” That full humanity comes through in Alano Miller and Elijah Jones, two skilled actors
UNDERDOG’
Broadnax had worked with separately but never together. Their connection, he says, quickly mirrored the relationship they portray. “They come into the room with such a love for one another,” Broadnax says. “Now they are like brothers.”
Audiences will experience that relationship at close range. Staged in the round, the production places theatergoers around the brothers’ one-room apartment, allowing them to witness the humor, competition, vulnerability and shifting balance of power almost as if they were inside the room themselves. Music provides another layer, from the blues played by Lincoln to contemporary sounds reflecting the play’s 2001 New York setting. Broadnax brings a keen understanding of Parks’ distinctive rhythms and poetic language. The two are frequent collaborators known for staging bold, provocative theatrical works. He speaks of Parks with both affection and awe. “She writes from a deeply spiritual place, serving as an instrument for
something higher,” he says. “The writing is beautiful, complex, colorful, and rhythmic, capable of moving people toward revelation and deeper understanding.”
Although Topdog/Underdog is rooted unmistakably in the experience of two Black men, Broadnax believes its reach extends far beyond. Family, betrayal, survival, belonging and the hunger for self-worth know no racial boundaries. For Old Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein, the production marks an important milestone for the theater’s audiences. “SuzanLori Parks is a singular figure in the American theater, and her voice is as distinctive as it is captivating.” . Topdog/Underdog runs through October 18. Black theater patrons are invited to the October 9 Old Globe-sponsored Black Theatre Night, featuring a pre-show mixer and the opportunity to experience the play together in community. HEALTH Doulas Are Helping Black California Moms Navigate Pregnancy – Even as High Mortality Rates Persist By McKenzie Jackson California Black Media
A
fter losing twins, Long Beach resident Cassandra Carter approached the birth of her daughter, Nyomi, last November with anxiety. She wanted support for herself and her husband, Adewole, that extended beyond routine medical care.
The Centering Black Mothers in California report found that structural racism — including barriers to high-quality health care, and chronic stress— disproportionately harms Black women.
“Getting pregnant as a Black woman, I wanted a team around me that made me feel safe,” she said. “I know all about the mishaps that Black women experience.”
In a statement to California Black Media (CBM), the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) said maternal mortality disparities stem from multiple factors. The department said addressing structural racism, listening to Black women’s experiences and reducing provider bias are key to closing the gap.
Carter, a therapist and self-described hippie, hired Yvette Perry, a doula and co-founder of Divine Birthing Services LLC in Lancaster. Perry helped Cassandra craft a detailed birth plan.
California began covering doula care as a Medi-Cal benefit in 2023, providing eligible patients with support during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period, according to CDPH.
“I was worried about postpartum depression. Mrs. Yvette knows a lot about how postpartum affects men as well,” Carter explained.
Whitney Dotson of Inglewood wanted an expert on pregnancy, labor, and delivery to guide her and her husband, Anthony, through the birth of their son, Anthony III. So, she hired Perry for doula support.
Perry was present the day Nyomi was born. She held the baby when Carter or her husband needed a moment and even set up candles in the birthing suite. “Whatever I needed for my comfort, she was there,” Carter said of Perry. “She was there as an advocate and voice. I had a really serene birthing experience because I had someone extra who wasn’t tied to me as my family.” Perry, a doula for nearly six years, said preexisting conditions, poor communication and dismissive hospital care heighten health risks for Black mothers. “Sometimes, Black mommies are not being heard. They don’t know they have rights. They don’t know they can say, ‘no,’” Perry explained. “Doulas empower them. We are there to educate them.” Perry’s concerns reflect a broader public health crisis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2024 maternal mortality report, non-Hispanic Black women in the U.S. died from pregnancyrelated causes at a rate of 44.8 deaths per 100,000 live births. In California, Black women experience the highest pregnancy-related mortality rate — about four times greater than other women, according to statistics. From 2021 to 2023, the leading causes of pregnancy-related deaths included cardiovascular disease, COVID-19, hemorrhage, sepsis, amniotic fluid embolism, and pulmonary embolism.
“It’s always more comfortable when you can have a second opinion,” she said. “Knowing she was better versed in what the options were, made me more comfortable.” Dotson, 39, had a healthy pregnancy but faced recommendations common for expectant mothers over 35. Her doctor advised inducing labor at 39 weeks, but she hoped to carry to full term. “I wasn’t comfortable with that,” she admitted. Perry provided Dotson with information about induction guidelines and alternatives, helping her understand her options and communicate her preferences. Then, Dotson returned to her doctor. “I said, ‘I don’t want to — and this is why,’” she recalled. “He agreed and pushed the induction date back a week.” Perry also advised Anthony on how he could support his wife during and after the pregnancy and during Anthony III’s birth. She also reminded Dotson to change birthing positions — from her back to her hands and knees. Before Saveneh Martinez became a doula with Fierce Advocates in Contra Costa County, she was a new mom, uneducated on aspects of birth, which led to her first child, Colton, being placed in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

“I didn’t know my choices,” she said. Martinez called it “lifesaving” for expecting moms to have a doula. “It should be a medical right,” she said. California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative (CPQCC) Senior Associate Medical Director Kimberly D. Gregory said research suggests that doulas decrease the pre-term birth rate and the likelihood of a C-section. “Having a doula is a proactive thing to do,” she said. Efforts are being made across the state to reduce maternal deaths. CDPH's Title V Action Plan aims to reduce pregnancy-related deaths among Black birthing mothers from 49.7 to 42.3 per 100,000 live births by 2030 through improvements in patient-centered care, expanding community-based perinatal teams, and addressing the social factors that contribute to poor maternal health outcomes. CDPH’s Black Infant Health (BIH) Program and Perinatal Equity Initiative (PEI) have already begun to make headway. “BIH’s prenatal group model improves key intermediate outcomes for participants, including increased social support and empowerment, better stress management, reduced depressive symptoms and gains in health knowledge and behaviors such as safe sleep practices and reduced smoking,” the CDPH told CBM. “PEI’s early implementation results show
progress across several participant-reported areas, such as improved birth experiences, breastfeeding initiation, and coparenting skills among fathers and partners,” the CDPH statement continued. Gregory said the California Pregnancy Associated Review Committee examines maternal deaths and develops guidelines to help hospitals improve care. One of its main recommendations focuses on how hospitals respond to hemorrhaging, a leading cause of pregnancy-related deaths. Gregory said CMQCC also created standard clinic care practices for cardiovascular disease and sepsis, two more drivers of maternal mortality, but widespread implementation across the state is pending. She noted that although there are 800 maternal deaths a year in the U.S., there are also 3.6 million births. “Most people will do well,” she said. “But you should know about complications like preterm birth. You should know about complications like diabetes, preeclampsia and postpartum depression.” Martinez said doulas help to make birthing the transformative experience that it is, instead of a routine clinical transaction. “Being able to feel heard, seen, safe, respected, and just being able to create spaces for them to be held as well,” she said. Supported by the California Health Care Foundation (CHCF), which works to ensure that people have access to the care they need, when they need it, at a price they can afford. Want To Lower Your Risk Of Dementia? It doesn't involve a blood test By Lauran Neergaard Associated Press New blood tests that might predict Alzheimer’s years before symptoms begin may sound tantalizing for people who worry about later-in-life dementia. But doctors say they aren't quite ready yet — and besides, you don’t need a test before trying to lower your risk. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared four blood tests to help doctors diagnose whether Alzheimer’s — not another kind of dementia or something else — is behind someone’s memory problems or other cognitive symptoms. Some laboratories and online services offer their own tests. Yet dementia specialists say people without symptoms also seek those tests even though they’re neither approved nor recommended for that population. Instead, focus on addressing potentially preventable brain risks. One large study found people who reached middle age without high blood pressure, diabetes and smok-
isolation, treating hearing loss and exercising your brain, not just your body. They say middle age is a key time to act.
ing lived dementia-free for a lot longer — nearly 13 years longer — than people with all three of those common health problems in their 50s.
As for those extra 13 dementia-free years, the NYU study reinforces that what's good for the heart is good for the brain.
What Alzheimer’s blood tests can and can’t do It's not clear what causes Alzheimer's, but its telltale markers are abnormal forms of two proteins. Sticky beta-amyloid can build into brain-clogging plaque over decades, eventually spurring neuron-killing tau tangles that lead to symptoms. Blood tests that measure a tau type called p-tau217 seem particularly good at reflecting amyloid buildup in people with symptoms. As for the symptom-free, a study led by Mass General Brigham researchers found older adults with very high p-tau217 levels had a 38% risk of developing cognitive impairment within five years, and a higher risk over 10 years. Here’s the rub: A “positive” test result is just a risk factor, not a guarantee someone will later develop Alz-

ed cognitive decline in older adults who were at increased risk of developing dementia. Among the steps: A half-hour of moderately intense exercise four times a week, twiceweekly resistance training and following the MIND diet, which stresses lots of leafy greens and berries, whole grains, poultry and fish.
A major trial last year found that healthier habits slowed age-relat-

heimer’s, Ashton cautioned. Lots of older adults harbor high levels of amyloid but never show cognitive trouble. And while negative test results seem pretty reliable, a positive test sometimes is wrong, a so-called false positive.
Coresh's team analyzed health records of more than 12,000 people who had been tracked for decades since they were, on average, age 56. High blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes and smoking can damage blood vessels that feed the brain and fuel inflammation. Those who entered the study without those three problems fared best, but avoiding one or two was helpful. Even people who carry the APOE4 gene, which increases the risk of later-in-life Alzheimer's, still benefited from a healthier middle age. Other studies also have shown that aggressively treating high blood pressure helps brain health. As for those Alzheimer's blood tests, stay tuned. Clinical trials are underway to tell if drugs now used to treat Alzheimer's might also help certain people before they develop symptoms — findings that could change testing advice.

How to protect yourself No matter what type of scam you encounter, a few simple habits can go a long way toward reducing your risk: • Limit the personal information you share online and make social media profiles private whenever possible. This can help reduce the information scammers can use to target you, guess your security questions or attempt to access your financial accounts. • When you’re making a payment, use more protected methods, such as credit and debit cards, which generally offer stronger consumer protections than wire transfers, gift cards or peer-to-peer payment apps. Treat peer-to-peer payments, such as Zelle, like cash — once the money is sent, it’s often difficult to recover. • Scammers can spoof phone numbers to make calls look like they’re coming from your bank, law enforcement or another trusted organization. Don’t automatically trust your caller ID – if you get a call demanding immediate action or claiming there’s a problem with your account, hang up and call back directly using a verified phone number. Banks will never call and ask you for account
attachments from unexpected emails or text messages and avoid accessing your financial accounts or making online purchases on public Wi-Fi, where savvy cybercriminals can gain access to your login credentials. • Perhaps most importantly, slow down. Back-to-school season brings a flurry of financial decisions and scammers know students are looking for deals. They often create a false sense of urgency to try to pressure people into making quick decisions. Taking a few extra minutes to verify information can make the difference.
The bottom line Whether you’re shopping for school supplies, searching for a job or signing your first lease if you’re entering college, your status as a student can make you a prime target for scammers. Stay skeptical of unsolicited offers, verify before you pay or share personal information, and slow down when something feels rushed. Those simple habits can help protect your money, your identity and your peace of mind throughout the school year from scams and fraud. For more financial health tips, visit chase.com/scamproof.

A Salute to Our African Nations
Guinea-Bissau’s Path to Independence: September 24, 1973 termined anti-colonial movements in Africa. A Portuguese colony since the 19th century, the territory endured decades of exploitation under Lisbon’s rule. By the 1950s, frustration with Portuguese repression fueled the rise of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), led by Amílcar Cabral. Unlike many independence movements, PAIGC built a strong rural base, organizing farmers, establishing schools and
By Voice & Viewpoint Staff A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER: This article continues our salute to the independence anniversaries of African nations, acknowledging our respect and appreciation of our brothers and sisters among us as we work together to build better lives. Guinea-Bissau’s struggle for independence was one of the most de-
clinics, and waging a guerrilla war beginning in 1963. Despite Portugal’s military campaigns, Cabral’s strategy of mobilizing the population and securing international support steadily weakened colonial control. On September 24, 1973, the PAIGC unilaterally declared Guinea-Bissau’s independence, which was recognized by many countries even before Portugal’s 1974 Carnation
Revolution forced Lisbon to formally concede. Guinea-Bissau thus became one of the first Portuguese colonies in Africa to win independence through armed resistance. The victory symbolized the resilience of its people and set an example for liberation movements across the continent, even though the post-independence years would bring significant political instability and recurring coups.
