It is my distinct honor to serve as your Chair during this two-year term, especially during our very successful, recent state Convention. Many good things occurred: #1. Myron presided over his final convention as SDTA President and he was in rare form, as always. Myron will be on board until his retirement date of April 1, 2022. His experience as lobbyist, esteemed leader, and “people person” has served our Association well for over 20 years. Kudos to Myron and my best to him as he embarks on the next part of his life’s journey. #2. Our present/new Executive Director, Christine Erickson, attended all the Convention events and was introduced to the attendees. Our Association is fortunate to have Christine represent us. She is approachable, intelligent, qualified as our voice in Pierre, eager and ready to learn the ins and outs of heading our Association. She and Myron will “tag team” for the next seven months. Welcome Christine! #3. My Chairman’s Award was presented to Tom Murphy of Parker Transfer. He is a vital part of our Association, especially as he headed the Selection Committee to vet all 60 (!) candidates for the Executive Director position. He is also head of the Next Gen Committee and his award is well deserved. #4. The Driver of the Year Award was presented to Douglas Houselog, Orion Food Systems. As Steve Hoffman, SDTA Council Chairman and all involved in the SDTA Safety Management Council can attest, this year’s Driver of the Year candidates were outstanding and in very close contention for the Award. Congratulations to Doug Houselog and my thanks to the Safety Management Council for their work. Photos of the Convention highlights are on the following pages of this publication. On a less light note, if you have a driver with a suspended DUI conviction, and his CDL was revoked for the mandatory one year, please refer to the case cited below. President’s I am sure by now that I have given notice of my pending retirement from the job of President of the South Dakota Trucking Association effective on April 1, 2022. After a long process of advertising, sorting of applications and interviews, my successor has been named. I want to personally congratulate Christine Erickson from Sioux Falls for being selected to fill the position of Executive Director. In order to ensure a seamless transition, Christine and I will be working together for the next 7 months, that mentor period also includes the 2022 Legislative Session. The 2021 Annual Convention of the South Dakota Trucking Association (SDTA) is history. It was well attended, very informative and enjoyable at the same time. For those that missed it, I want to provide some additional information regarding what I feel were the highlights. For those of you that are history buffs, this was the 34th annual SDTA Convention that I have attended. Wow, time flies when you are having fun! Chairman's Award This year’s Chairmans Award was presented to Mr. Tom Murphy from Parker Transfer. Tom has been a great asset to the SDTA Board and was recently selected to serve on the Executive Committee, making him eligible to move through the positions and become a future Chairman of the Board. Most recently, Tom served tirelessly on the selection team that resulted in the hiring of our new Executive Director. My personal congratulations go out to Mr. Tom Murphy for being selected to receive a very well deserved SDTA Chairman’s Award for 2021! Safety Director of the Year This year’s SDTA Safety Director of the Year is Peter Book, A & A Express, Brandon. He started working in the Safety Director’s position in 2019. Peter has done an amazing job learning the role and bringing the team together. During his tenure, A & A Express reduced their ISS from 97 to 29! Congratulations to Peter for being selected as the 2021 SDTA Safety Director of the Year! Driver of the Year This year’s SDTA Driver of the Year is Doug Houselog, Orion Food Systems, Sioux Falls, SD. He has spent the past 19 years driving for Orion Food Systems. Collectively, the 12 drivers of the month that competed in this year’s competition, have a combined total of nearly 30 million safe driving miles and over 307 years of experience. Congratulations to Doug for his well deserved selection as the 20212022 SDTA Driver of the Year! Please mark your calendars and plan to join your industry partners and friends at the 2022 Annual Convention of the South Dakota Trucking Association which is scheduled for September 16th, 17th and 18th at the Deadwood Mountain Grand, Deadwood, SD. September 2021 Driver of the Month

Jere rions Professional Truck Driver Jere Rions, professional truck driver for Old Dominion Freight Line, Sioux Falls, SD, was selected as the September 2021 Driver of the Month by the South Dakota Safety Management Council. Jere has been in the trucking industry for over 30 years. He has acquired over one million accident-free (minus being rearended by a drunk driver in 2014). He is very active in the South Dakota Truck Driving Championships. When he wasn’t competing, he was participating as a volunteer. In the words of his manager, “Mr. Rions is an amazing example of what a professional driver is expected to be. Each and every day he brings a positive attitude along with an amazing work ethic. He is ready and willing to help in any way possible.”

Helen Schuldt February 12, 1951 - September 16, 2021

Helen was born on February 12, 1951 in Winner, South Dakota to Paul and Donna (Schulz) Jost. She grew up in Presho and always had an interest in drawing and painting. At age 12, she sold her first portrait. In 1969, Helen attended USD in Vermillion, where she majored in Art and Theatre. She married Lester Shuldt and they lived in Sioux Falls. Helen operated a commercial design business in addition to her portrait work. She was very talented and utilized her creative and freedom of the “Fine Arts” in her designs for business signage. Helen is survived by her husband, Lester; three children, Sheila Schuldt, Jason (Susan) Schuldt and Quincy Schuldt; five step children, Penny (Jim) Schook, John (Jodi) Schuldt, Rod (Stacey) Schuldt, Wade Schuldt and Shawn Schuldt; 14 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild; and a brother, Monte (Carole) Jost. We welcome Executive Director Christine Erickson to the South Dakota Trucking Association Family Christine Erickson, Executive Director for the South Dakota Trucking Association started her job the day before the 86th Annual SDTA Convention. What a crazy week to start, but without hesitation she jumped right into things. We are fortunate that Myron is going to be around for a while to show her the ropes. We are also fortunate that Christine is a go-getter and will catch on quickly!

Louie Greek, TAT Training Specialist Truckers Against Trafficking lgreek@truckersagainsttrafficking.org 720-289-5022 Louie Greek, Training Specialist with Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT) spoke to kick off our 2021 SDTA Convention. TAT exists to educate, equip, empower, and mobile members of the trucking and travel plaza industry to combat domestic sex trafficking. Mr. Greek speaks around the country about TAT’s mission and how the trucking and busing industries are combating human trafficking. He also trains law enforcement on human trafficking, the victim-centered approach, and how to identify human trafficking at routine interdiction and inspection stops. He has been involved in the fight against human trafficking since 2013 and has assisted law enforcement with multiple human trafficking investigations around the globe. We were fortunate that he took the time to talk about a very sobering topic. There are many ways a truck driver can help through this program. If you are interested in becoming trained, his contact information is attached above. We thank Mr. Greek for taking the time to talk to our group.

Downtown Sioux Falls Event

Those who chose not to golf were able to participate in our Downtown Sioux Falls Event. Each participant was given $20 to spend however they saw fit. We encouraged unique dining and shopping, the Sculpture Walk and visiting great stops like the Washington Pavilion, Old Courthouse Museum, or the 8th & Railroad shopping center. State of the art equipment They now have an inside inspection bay in which to conduct their inspections. It is a state-of-the-art facility in all ways. They now have a lot more room to work in, with office space for the entire staff.

Their tire anomaly sensor screens commercial motor vehicles at weigh stations to identify those vehicles which are unsafe due to missing or under inflated tires. The weigh-in-motion (WIM) scales on the interstate system pre-weighs and helps screen vehicles for inspection. The thermal imaging sensors detect brake anomalies in temperature, such as a brake that is too hot (mechanical malfunction or working too hard) or one that is too cold (mechanical malfunction or not working at all). The new Port of Entry and its technology allows inspectors to pre-screen the commercial vehicles more efficiently, detect and discover safety hazards, and keep the compliant vehicles and companies on the roadways.

2021Safety Director of the Year: PETER BOOK was named the 2021 Safety Director of the Year at the SDTA Banquet. Pete took over the position of Safety Director for A&A Express late in 2019. He has done an amazing job learning the role and bringing the team together to get the results they desperately needed. At the time of him taking it over A&A reduced their ISS from 97 to 29. A&A had 3 alerts in their CSA scores and were managing 2 different ELD systems. He moved everything to Omni Tracs and dropped all of the alerts. Peter inherited a dash cam system that was purchased before his time By RoadRunner (A&A’s previous owners). After a struggle with them he did his research and switched their business to Samsara. A&A is over 50% done installing them in their fleet. Peter’s approach to safety is tough but fair. If he feels like a driver understands the things they need to work on he works with them. If he feels a driver just doesn’t care he tries to get them to care. When they don’t he isn’t afraid to part ways. Safety First at A&A has really been the message he brought in. He pressures Geno, A&A’s Vice President to support his Message of the Week. Geno stated if Peter doesn’t hear this Message of the Week coming from dispatchers and office staff, he is on him. Peter started up the safe driver award program again with the help of Great West Casualty Company. He continues to further his education in truck safety. He is not afraid to go the extra mile or take the extra time to do things right. A&A Express is very pleased to have him on their team driving the safety change they needed.

He is always on time for his deliveries and is well liked by his customers. Tom Murphy oversees the day to day operation of Parker Transfer, Sioux Falls. Tom has been a very active member of the South Dakota Trucking Association. He is a SDTA Board Member and Chair of the SDTA NextGen Committee.

He has always been committed to this association, but recently has gone above and beyond. He was part of the search committee for Myron’s successor. He can tell you, it’s been a huge undertaking, with nearly 60 applicants from all over. The committee came up with a process and put in a lot of time to research the candidates, to which they ultimately chose Christine Erickson as our new SDTA Executive Director. Auctioning off the Convoy forSD Convoy forSpecial Olympics Glade Evenson purchased the Special Olympics print for $1050. He then turned around and gave the print to Mike Wells, professional truck driver for Dakota Carriers. During the Driver of the Year interviews Mike made a comment that stuck with Glade. On the third Tuesday of every month, the SDTA Safety Management Council meets at the SDTA office at 11:30 a.m. We start off the meeting with a FREE LUNCH.
