Have you ever been affected by our nation’s supply chain deficiencies? I have heard of shortages of paint, lumber, automotive chips, Peterbilt windshields, etc. The supply chain has been radically reduced/impacted by several conditions. We truckers are ready to “deliver the goods” once those goods can be loaded, but the problem seems to be at our nation’s sea ports. Is it because of political interference? Is it because of port worker shortages? Is it because of logistical shortcomings? Your guess is as good as mine. I was visiting with a young waitress who is majoring in Supply Chain Improvement. That particular college major is a new one to me. I suppose that major will involve a lot of logistical training. I hope by the time that she graduates, our supply chain headaches will be much improved, so we can continue to supply our nation’s needs. Your SDTA has been in front promoting our industry with two very good gatherings this month. October 5th, the Fall Seminar offered a tour of the Sioux Falls Port of Entry. What a great opportunity to learn of the highly-improved technology available to us and the SD Highway Patrol to keep our trucks rolling safely and quickly. Our thanks to Sergeant Matt Koll for providing and hosting the seminar. Then, on October 6th, your Association and several industry sponsors hosted a NextGen mixer at Great Shots Golf Experience. It was very well attended by young truckers and industry professionals, and a couple of us not-soyoung truckers. The opportunity network, to enjoy food and beverages as well as learn how using social media sources will improve recruitment efforts cannot be underestimated. Thanks to Carrie Anderson of K&J Trucking, Inc., who talked about their social media engagements. On the same note, how many owner operators, with whom you interact often, are not currently SDTA members? Those owner operators reap the benefits of our Association’s efforts on their behalf and they must pull their weight by joining the SDTA. I ask you to sow the seed. Ask them to become members. Ask them again the next time you interact with them. If nothing else, wear them down until they join and enjoy our Association. Plan to attend the Guided Pheasant Hunt and Fall Board Meeting in Pierre on November 11th and 12th. Details are on page 19 of this publication. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. Join your fellow truckers and industry professionals and experience the weather and camaraderie. President’s Fall foliage colors are beginning to give us an indication that the fall season is right around the corner. Even though I know cooler weather is ahead, it is still difficult for me to put the golf clubs away and put the Harley in its winter spot. Well, Congress is still not getting their job done! They have a long list of issues that need to be handled but political posturing seems to be the norm with no solutions seen in the near future. The issues with infrastructure funding continue with little resolution in sight. To me it is quite sad that we have become so politically and issue polarized that it prevents compromise to handle the issues. Oh well, I will stop with my rant; we need to stay positive that things will get resolved. This is still the best country in the world! The Fall meeting of the SDTA Board of Directors is scheduled for Friday, November 12th at the RedRossa in Pierre, SD. I am sure we will again have a very lively discussion regarding the federal and state issues that have a direct effect on this industry. Please keep in mind that this meeting is no different than any other board meeting in that every member is invited and encouraged to attend. Also keep in mind that there is a guided pheasant hunt planned for Thursday, November 11th. Please plan to join us in Pierre! As you know, I have announced my retirement effective on March 31, 2022. My successor Ms. Christine Erickson and I have been and will be working together through that date which includes the 2022 Legislative Session. In closing, I encourage everyone to review the "Dates to Remember" contained in this edition of the Trucking News. We have a lot on the calendar including receptions with state legislators. I would like to see more members participate in these social events; it demonstrates our strength and solidarity. Please plan to attend one or both of the legislative socials. The lowdown on high blood pressure By now, it’s no secret that the A blood pressure reading is a staple of every doctor’s visit — no matter what it’s for. The nurse straps a cuff to your upper arm to get a reading of two numbers — systolic and diastolic blood pressure. These numbers tell you how much blood your heart is pumping (systolic blood pressure — or the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats) as well as how much resistance it faces in your arteries (diastolic blood pressure — or the pressure in your arteries between heartbeats). Your blood pressure can vary from reading to reading, but it’s considered normal if your systolic blood pressure is below 120, and your diastolic blood pressure is below 80.

Risk factors for developing high blood pressure
There are several risk factors for developing high blood pressure — some that you can control and some that you can’t. These include your age, race, genetics, family history, lifestyle, health conditions like diabetes and pregnancy. Talk to your doctor if you’re concerned about any of these risk factors.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services External Site, 108 million Americans — nearly half of the population — have high blood pressure (also known as hypertension), and most of them (82 million) do not have it under control. Of that group, 36 million have consistent blood pressure readings that are higher than 140 over 90.
How to prevent high blood pressure
So, why is it important to pay attention to your blood pressure? If it’s too high for too long, it can cause some serious health problems like heart disease, kidney disease, heart attack and stroke. And, high blood pressure often doesn’t come with any symptoms or warning
• Being physically active, aiming for at least two hours and 30 minutes of moderateintensity exercise each week (that’s only 30 minutes a day, five days a week).

If your blood pressure readings are usually normal, you can still take steps to prevent hypertension before it starts. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this includes: • Eating a healthy diet that is low in salt and saturated fat but high in potassium, fiber, and protein.
BE WELL WITH WELLMARK • Quitting smoking to prevent tobacco from raising your blood pressure. • Limiting alcoholic beverages, which can also raise your blood pressure — aim for no more than two drinks per day (men) and one drink per day (women). • Getting enough sleep, which helps keep your heart and blood vessels healthy (and as a bonus, it helps you manage stress too).

One of the most important things you can do to help prevent or manage high blood pressure is develop a partnership with a personal doctor. Working with your health care team to manage a chronic condition like hypertension will help you have the best possible outcome. First Published: 9:04 AM PDT, October 3, 2021 Inside Edition visited student participants of Patterson High School who are participating in one of the first truck-driving programs for high schoolers in the U.S. Hiring teenagers might help with the nationwide truck driver shortage, but you still don't generally see them behind the wheel of a big rig. Now that's changing. Inside Edition spoke to a California 17 year old named Isabella, as she trained behind the wheel. She’s one of several teens at Patterson High School who are participating in one of the first truck-driving programs for high schoolers in the U.S. “There is a huge need. We’re short about 63,000 drivers today,” instructor Dave Dein said. “My mom was more nervous overall, ‘cause the idea of truck driving scares her ‘cause of all the reckless drivers on the road,” she said. She’s getting a hands-on lesson in truck maintenance and safety. To prepare them for the real road, they spend 30 hours in a driving simulator.
