Wow, how quickly things have changed in just a few weeks. Last month it seemed that business was pretty much as normal. We were planning our annual Call on Washington and the Spring Log Haulers Seminar. It didn’t take long before we realized these events not only had to be canceled, but every SDTA activity is in question for the rest of the summer. We will just have to make them calls as time goes by. It is difficult to sit down in these times and write something inspiring. So for now I am just going to be thankful and appreciative. If we all try just a little, I think we could look at this and see just how much worse it could actually be. I am thankful to live in a country where our government is making every attempt to minimize the negative impact from this, both from a health standpoint and an economic standpoint. I am thankful for all the medical staff and all the preparation for the worst case scenario from the Coronavirus. I just pray we never have to use their services. I am thankful for all the essential business and their employees who are everyday out there just serving our daily needs. Of course, we can’t forget the trucking companies and their drivers. Without them we would have nothing. These people are out there everyday putting themselves in harms way to just serve our everyday needs. If I have forgot anyone I apologize. We take so much for granted and don’t realize it until it is no longer there and our freedom is limited. We can never give these people enough gratitude. THANK YOU ALL SO VERY MUCH!!!! We all have a lot to think about and take care of right now. Just stay safe and stay healthy. Every month the first article I look at in the Trucking News is Driver of the Month. I enjoy reading their biography. It is motivating and inspiring, especially in these times. Our drivers are the true stewards and representatives of the industry. They are what the public sees and this is how they view the industry by their attitudes and actions, first impressions. They are not only the heroes of the industry but they are and continue to be what many of us refer to as heroes of the highway. Every company takes pride when one of their drivers are selected for Driver of the Month award. I have to take a little extra pride this month. This is the first time ever that one of our Log Haulers has been selected for Driver of the Month. Congratulations Weiner Frasier of Hill City SD.

Wow, isn’t this about the craziest time. I have lived through a couple of 100 year floods and I thought that was a big deal. The COVID-19 Pandemic is, hopefully, a once in a lifetime experience. Approaching challenges in life is part of life but most of the time a final outcome can be predicted or forecasted, well not this time. This appears to be the challenge of challenges with not only lives on the line but also business survival. The predictions are that many businesses will fail before this pandemic is over. It is great to be part of an industry that is keeping this country moving forward. This is a time for this country to realize what the trucking industry does while also realizing what it would be like if trucking would not be stepping up. Hopefully people will not forget! The SDTA Office has and is maintaining all of its services for the membership through these difficult times. We are alternating shifts and have decreased hours in order to follow all local and federal guidelines regarding the pandemic. If you need something, we will be there to serve. The annual SDTA Truck Driving Championships, the National Truck Driving Championships and the annual Call on Washington all have been cancelled. In addition, in concert with Chairman Robert Christian, we have chosen to cancel the SDTA Summer Board of Directors Meeting along with the annual Cliff Tjaden Fishing Event. For your information, even though it is not specifically our event, you should also note that Wheel Jam has also been cancelled. So far, we have not discussed cancellation of the West River Poker Run nor the West River or East River Annual SDTA Golf Fundraisers. Hopefully by that time, some of the crowd size limitations will be eliminated and life will start to get back to some normalcy. Stay tuned; I’m not sure where we are headed. I do know this country will survive; as the saying goes, “this is not our first rodeo”. Stay safe and stay healthy! Until next month . . .

Weiner Frazer, Weiner Trucking, Keystone, SD, has been selected as the April 2020 Driver of the Month by the South Dakota Safety Management Council. Weiner has been a professional truck driver in the logging industry for the past 40 years. He has logged over 2 million accident-free miles in his career. CVSA Postpones International Roadcheck Greenbelt, Maryland (March 25, 2020) – Every year, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) sets inspection and enforcement initiatives, such as International Roadcheck, which is scheduled for May 5-7. However, with public health and safety as its top concern, CVSA has decided to postpone International Roadcheck to later in the year. The Alliance will monitor the status of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and appropriately select the new dates when it’s safe and reasonable to do so. Once the rescheduled dates have been selected, CVSA will notify the commercial motor vehicle enforcement community, the motor carrier industry, the press and the public. It is important to note that International Roadcheck, as a high-visibility, high-volume inspection and regulatory enforcement event, will no longer take place on May 5-7; however, roadside safety inspections and traffic enforcement will continue to be conducted every day, with enforcement personnel following their departmental health and safety policies and procedures, as appropriate. “As we urgently respond to this time-sensitive crisis, we must remain diligent and committed to ensuring that the commercial motor vehicles and drivers providing essential goods and services to our communities are following motor carrier safety regulations,” said CVSA President Sgt. John Samis with the Delaware State Police. “Safety doesn’t take a break. It is always our top priority.” “International Roadcheck has run on-schedule for the past 32 years so its postponement was thoroughly and thoughtfully discussed before we made this decision, but it wasn’t a difficult decision to make,” said Sgt. Samis. “This experience is unprecedented in our modern society and we need to do all that we can to help stop the spread of this global pandemic.” At this time, International Roadcheck is the only public enforcement initiative that has been postponed. Operation Safe Driver Week is still scheduled for July 12-18 and Brake Safety Week is still set for Aug. 23-29. CVSA will closely monitor the coronavirus outbreak, follow guidance from public health expert leadership, and promptly notify the membership and industry stakeholders of the rescheduled International Roadcheck dates and the status of future scheduled enforcement campaigns. Not Just Another Human Resources Story: Why HR is Vital to Organizations of all Sizes Which of the following do you believe? You can’t trust anyone in HR: they’ll get you talking, look sympathetic, but then turn everything you say over to management. HR is a luxury we don’t need because we need all our budget resources to pay the employees who produce. HR = a partnership for managers, employees and organizations. HR = lots of talk + little action.
How HR Shoots Itself in the Foot
In many organizations HR has minimal impact. Supervisors don’t let the human resources department know about problem employees until they’re ready to terminate them, when HR intervention earlier might have made a difference. Senior managers rarely invite HR to the table to discuss strategy. A significant number of employees avoid HR, distrusting what might happen if they air their grievances. Some HR professionals contribute to this problem by falsely promising and then breaking employee confidentiality; it only takes one betrayal for the “don’t trust them” word to spread. They fail to balance organizational interests with employee advocacy, when HR needs to serve both groups. They act as if HR certifications trump real-world experience and talk over supervisors and employees who leave conversations with HR thinking, “You don’t get it.”
The Balance: Organizational Interests and Employee Advocacy
HR needs to fairly balance employer and employee needs. Some HR rookies so eagerly strive to please management that they fail both employees and their organization; after all, management needs to hear what they’ve done wrong to make it right. Also, employees aren’t widgets, and HR serves no one if it forgets the H in HR.
When the Trust Isn’t There
When employees don’t trust HR to solve problems, they disengage, walk out the door or worse, negatively impact other employees. Further, how can management fix a problem if they don’t know it exists? As just one example, the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission recently noted that three-quarters of those with sexual harassment allegations hadn’t brought their complaints forward. As a result, these long-buried complaints allowed anger to fester, allowed potential harassers to create problems for others even as they secured promotions, and resulted in defamation against some potentially falselyaccused employees. We see the result all over the media.
Similarly, how can HR earn a place at the table when senior executives meet to create strategy? After thirty-nine years offering HR On-call services, I’ve learned three answers for gaining trust and thus a seat at the table. First, I have to prove I know what I’m doing. When I don’t know an answer or strategy, I need to say so and then find the right answer and strategy. Second, my intent must be clear. I need to make it clear I place their organizational needs first—whatever the cost. For example, when I’m asked to investigate certain situations, I may suggest my client reach out first to their attorney, even if that means the attorney’s staff then provides the investigative services. Third and most important, I, and any HR professional, need to show we “get it,” that we understand how supervisors, managers, and executives view situations. Instead of expecting managers to join HR’s team, HR needs to partner on management’s team. Finally, we need to contribute in ways that demonstrate our value.
HR’s Future
Some “old-style” thinkers believe HR departments should focus on administering payroll and employee benefits, processing hiring decisions made by others, and managing terminations, layoffs, and Department of Labor paperwork. All true, but HR needs to move beyond these boundaries. Employers need HR’s help to address these complaints, many of which take aim at senior managers and others that organizations hope to retain. HR needs to do more than fairly investigate these allegations: it needs to help organizations overhaul themselves at the cultural DNA level. HR needs to make it safe for targets and witnesses to come forward, to ensure that no one is above the law and to hold managers, supervisors, and employees accountable for creating and maintaining a respectful work environment for everyone. While harassment issues are glaringly obvious, they represent only one area in which HR needs to exercise interventionary muscle. Our workplaces, like our larger world, appears to be coming apart, with escalating amounts of workplace violence and polarized groups who shout at rather than talk with and listen to each other. A truly effective HR may be the one group most suited to help organizations address these needs.
Time to Turn to HR
HR professionals often wonder why supervisors and managers don’t seek them out before problem employee situations hit rock bottom. The answer? Managers see problem-solving as their job, not HR’s. It isn’t until a capable HR professional proves his or her worth that a supervisor or manager learns to make HR a first and not a last call. TRUCKING NEWS ~ PAGE 19

SDTA DRIVER OF THE MONTH RULES Each month the SDTA Safety Management Council reviews the nominations and votes to select the next months winner. At the Annual Convention the past 12 monthly winners interview to be named the S.D. Driver of the Year. Driver may be nominated for Driver of the Month for any outstanding act of heroism, a contribution to highway safety, an extraordinary act of courtesy, an exceptional deed or act of service to mankind within the community reflecting positively on the motor carrier industry, or for a long period of safe and courteous driving. An outstanding act shall be deemed to mean unusual or other than the normal every day courtesies afforded by truck drivers.
ELIGIBILITY:
1. The nominated driver must be an employee of a member in good standing of the South Dakota Trucking Association. 2. The nominated driver must have been employed by the present employer for at least two years and have a minimum of five years overall experience. 3. South Dakota domiciled* drivers are eligible for nomination for an outstanding act performed in any state. * The intent of the word “domiciled” shall be interpreted to mean: Any driver reporting to or regularly dispatched from a terminal within the State of South Dakota (in keeping with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations definition of his home terminal) regardless of where the driver may dwell. 4. A driver may receive the Driver of the Month award only one time in any contest year. He/she may be renominated in any subsequent year. 5. Nominations for outstanding acts on the highway shall be accompanied by supporting evidence (letters, statements, news clipping, etc.). A clear, factual account is absolutely necessary. Vague generalizations will not be accepted. 6. A copy of recent driver motor vehicle record check must accompany the nomination. 7. Drivers nominated and not selected as Driver of the Month will be held over and used in the following month’s selection. Nominees not selected in either of these two months may be re- nominated for any future month’s selection. 8. Entries must be in the office of the South Dakota Trucking Association no later than the 10th of each month for that current month’s contest. 9. Nominations may be made by any party, but must be approved by the employer or a representative of the employer. 10. The annual contest will run from September of the previous year through August of the current year. 11. What if There Were No Truck Drivers? Truckers Impact Many Aspects of our Daily Lives by Pride Transport - Jan 08, 2019 If you want an easy way to understand how important truck drivers are, just try to imagine what would happen if there were no truck drivers in the world. The impact could be more immediate and wide ranging than you think. We see trucks on our highways all the time but few of us really connect how they impact our daily lives. If you’ve worked retail, then maybe you know the labor of unloading a truck twice or three times a week. If not, then you probably go to the grocery store, grab what you need and never really give any thought as to how the milk, eggs, cheese or onions got to the shelf. We know these items come from somewhere but we rarely give much thought to how they get to our local market. The answer is: by trucks and truck drivers. So what would happen if they suddenly all disappeared? DAILY LIFE WITHOUT TRUCK DRIVERS WOULD BE EXTREMELY UNPLEASANT A world without truck drivers is not a pretty world — it isn’t even a very habitable world. In the United States alone $700.4 billion worth of goods is moved by trucks on a daily basis. The magnitude of this is almost unthinkable. If truck drivers stopped working, even for a day, the ramifications would be insane. Most retail stores and groceries operate on a just-in-time basis, meaning they wait until stock levels are almost gone before they re-order. Without truck drivers, grocery stores and retailers would soon run low on supplies. Food shortages would suddenly be a reality. Drinking water would be in short supply in regions where the chemicals needed to purify water are delivered by trucks. Health conditions would be drastically impacted. Medical supplies would quickly run out because most hospitals have moved to the just-in-time delivery system, waiting until essentials have gone before ordering more. In the US alone, 55,000 pharmacies receive goods and drugs daily via truck delivery. If the trucking delivery network were interrupted, hospitals, clinics and pharmacies would soon run out of medicine and supplies. The environmental impact could also be rather devastating. There are an estimated 236 million tons of waste generated by Americans annually, and without trucks to help dispose of it properly, the waste could accumulate and become toxic breeding grounds for infectious disease. From shipping our food in and taking our trash out, trucks and truck drivers play a role in our most vital daily tasks. BREAKING DOWN THE TRUCKERLESS WORLD MINUTE BY MINUTE Let’s break this terror down to specific blocks of time: Within 24 hours: Gas stations would run seriously low on gas and all mail delivery would cease. Within 48 hours: Gas supplies would be so low that prices would skyrocket. Think of the gas lines in the late ‘70s times a million. Food supplies in stores would dwindle and prices would rise. Within 72 hours: The essentials like bread, milk, water, canned meats, due to lack of delivery, panic and hoarding, would run out. ATMs and banks would run out of cash and not be able to complete transactions. Gas stations would be completely out of all fuel, garbage would become building sized mountains in the streets and cargo ships would remain moored in their docks. At the one week mark: All automobile travel would cease. All forms of public transportation would also cease. People would not be able to get to work, grocery stores or seek medical care. This would increase intestinal illness, which would be a death sentence in an already weakened healthcare state. Within one month: The country would be totally disabled and in complete chaos. FINAL THOUGHTS (HOPEFULLY NOT TOO FINAL): TRUCKERS DO AN IMPORTANT JOB You know it’s an important job when eliminating it leads quickly to riots, looting, violence of all manner and the breakdown of civilized behavior completely. What we’ve learned is that if all truck drivers suddenly disappeared today, the level of death and disease would be the stuff of science fiction films and the degradation of humanity would be unimaginable. So if you’re thinking about becoming a truck driver, you should know it’s an important job — very important. For everybody else on the road, when you see trucks on the highway, be careful, be vigilant, make sure you’re doing your part to keep the roads safe for them. Maybe you should even thank them, because without truck drivers, life is going to be some serious, sci-fi mayhem and really, no one wants to deal with that.
