Thank you for joining us for our third production of the 2025-26 season, When She Became the Moon by our own Dr. Mabelle Reynoso. We are deeply proud to share this haunting and beautiful new work with you.
This play invites us into the lives of three young girls navigating the space between childhood and adolescence, between what we can see and what we can only sense, between the secrets we keep and the truths we must face. Through their journey into the spiritual realm, Mabelle shares the Mexican and Mexican-American understanding that the supernatural is woven into ancestry, culture, and everyday experiences. The girls’ connection to the spiritual world reflects deeprooted beliefs in many Latinx communities that our loved ones, our past, and the unseen forces around us remain present and active in shaping who we are. As we gather to experience this story, we have the opportunity to deepen our understanding of these rich cultural traditions. I could not think of a better time to be telling this story.
Having Mabelle as both the playwright of this piece and faculty member makes this production especially meaningful. I’m equally grateful to the director of our production, Professor Peter Cirino, whose vision and leadership brought this play to our stage. Peter’s commitment to amplifying diverse stories and connecting our students to meaningful work like this is at the heart of what makes our school special.
Most importantly, I want to applaud our remarkable students, faculty, and staff who have poured their hearts into this production. Creating new work is always a leap of faith, and I hope you’ll join me in celebrating their artistry, dedication, and courage.

It is a very scary time to be a kid right now. But that doesn’t make today special. It has always been a very scary time to be a kid. For some kids more so than others. Many of my scariest childhood memories have influenced my explorations of horror on stage. Like that summer my sister and I had to sleep in my parents’ bedroom because a serial killer was terrorizing our city, breaking into houses in the middle of the night. Aside from making us set up our blankets and pillows at bedtime, our parents didn’t talk about it. What I knew about the gruesome crimes was courtesy of the evening news, which we weren’t allowed to watch, but couldn’t help overhearing from the blaring living room TV. I slept with the Illustrated Children’s Bible and a watergun under my pillow, for these would surely keep me safe. When my mom found out I was doing this, she confiscated my watergun and made me put the Bible back on the bookshelf. I was left without protection, or explanations, but thankfully, I had my sister and the rambunctious girl who lived across the street.
Through play, imagination, and silliness, we survived our childhood marred with tragic deaths, strange disappearances, and a serial killer, whose eventual capture meant we could go back to sleeping in our own bedroom. As I got a little older, I continued to make sense of a cruel world without context from the grown-ups in the room. But I was getting context elsewhere. Through books. One day, one of my tías gave me a grocery bag full of paperback novels. That is how I was introduced to Stephen King. Reading his stories, I was drawn in by the fear, uncertainty, and safety in knowing that no matter how terrifying the world he painted was, the book would eventually end, and I would be okay. That’s the thing I wanted most as a kid—knowing that I was going to be okay. But the fact of the matter is we don’t know if we’re going to be okay. We hope. We pray. And yes, many of us will be okay. Some of us will not. But now I’m one of the grown-ups in the room, and I have never forgotten how hard it was to be a kid. So I use theatre to invite young people to find the darkness in the light. There will always be darkness but let us never forget to remind our young people, and ourselves, to look up at the moon and remember the light..

SDSU performing arts invites you to take part in an exciting opportunity to support its new Performing Arts District in a meaningful way by participating in the Take A Seat campaign.

You have the opportunity to Take A Seat in the spotlight and enjoy having your name, a sentiment, anniversary date, or the name of another person you wish to honor laser-engraved on an elegant nameplate placed on one of the theater seats. Your sponsorship will support performances, students, faculty, and the greatest needs of the SDSU performing arts program.

The engraving you select promises that you or your loved one will be a visible part of this dynamic Performing Arts District for years to come.
