Welcome to Elektra, the penultimate show of our 2025–26 Season. You are about to witness something extraordinary on the Prebys Stage: an ancient story made urgently, unmistakably now. Under the visionary direction of Jesca Prudencio, Associate Professor and Head of Directing, Sophocles’ Elektra has been reimagined in 2026 Hollywood: a woman in mourning, finally free to feel everything she has been told to suppress.
Prudencio’s production merges the scale and intensity of Greek tragedy with the spectacle of modern media culture. Paparazzi, social media, and public opinion loom over Elektra’s world, creating an environment where every action is watched and judged. Sound familiar?
We are thrilled to present this exciting contemporary adaptation by Timberlake Wertenbaker that preserves the heightened language of the original while inviting our actors to bring their own modern voices to the text. We are proud to highlight a wonderful collaboration with SDSU’s Classics program, whose expertise has been instrumental in helping our actors with both the pronunciation and deeper understanding of the text.
Our students have poured themselves into this work with the hunger and fearlessness that defines the School of Theatre, Television, and Film. Our faculty have guided them with care and expertise. And our production staff have once again achieved something extraordinary. The quality you see on this stage does not happen by accident. It is the result of our faculty and staff’s tireless dedication to our students, remarkable craft, and the quiet heroism of people who ensure that every inch of this world is exactly right. We are endlessly grateful for them.
Thank you for joining us. We hope this production surprises you, moves you, and reminds you what theatre at its best can do.
