Important News about SDPB Magazine

The loss of federal funding has forced SDPB and Friends of SDPB to make decisions about how to keep SDPB sustainable in the immediate and long-term future. For this reason, the November issue of SDPB Magazine will be the final printed version you will receive.

This is not a decision that we came to lightly. These are challenging times, and we are working to provide the most beneficial ways SDPB can continue to serve you and every South Dakotan.

SDPB will continue offering a digital, print-at-home program listing that highlights weeknight primetime and weekend daily programs on SDPB 1, SDPB2 World, and SDPB3 Create.

The digital schedule will also be delivered to you via email every month. To ensure uninterrupted delivery of the reformatted SDPB Program Guide, please make sure we have your current email address. You may do so by visiting SDPB.org/updatemyinfo. You may also reach SDPB customer service staff at friends@sdpb.org or (605) 443-6960. If you are currently receiving the SDPB Magazine via email, no update is necessary.

The SDPB Program Guide will also continue to be available online at SDPB.org/Magazine. Select the “download” button to print your copy of the guide.

Thank you for being a part of the SDPB community. We are grateful for your support.

NEW MEMBERS ELECTED TO FRIENDS OF SDPB BOARD

Four new members were elected to serve up to four, two-year terms on the Friends of SDPB Board of Directors. They include:

Verna Kay Bormann is a retired finance officer and banker, who after a lengthy career in business in Colorado and Minnesota, retired to her home community of Parkston. VK, as she is known, is thrilled that the SDPB radio signal in the greater Mitchell area is now very strong thanks to the addition of the Mitchell Tower and KWSD 89.1FM. Verna Kay has been a lifelong listener of public radio and is interested in ensuring the future of public media in South Dakota remains strong.

Suzan Nolan is a retired school counselor who worked for the Rapid City Schools for 33 years. Now she spends retirement traveling both in the US and abroad. She's passionate about SDPB and is working hard to secure funding for the continuation of its valuable programs. She looks forward to supporting and advocating for SDPB.

Brad Randall served as the Minnehaha County Coroner and did death investigation work for much of the surrounding region. Though retired, he continues to have a forensic pathology consulting practice for regional attorneys. Brad has always valued public broadcasting and joined the board to help make sure the people of South Dakota continue to have the opportunity to listen to, and watch, everything SDPB has to offer.

Taylor is an ag producer and entrepreneur from Frederick, South Dakota. He began his farming career after receiving an associate’s degree in general agriculture from SDSU in 1996. Taylor, along with his wife Cassandra, vertically integrated oats from their farm into their own brand, Anthem, selling oatmeal products nationwide.

THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

The American Revolution – a six-part, twelvehour documentary from Florentine Films – offers a sweeping, deeply human retelling of the United States' founding conflict. Directed by Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein, and David Schmidt, and written by Geoffrey C. Ward, the series premieres on SDPB on November 16, 2025.

This ambitious project reframes the Revolution not just as a war for independence, but as a civil war, a war of conquest, and a global conflict. It explores how the rebellion of thirteen British colonies against the world’s most powerful empire reshaped the political landscape of the 18th century and inspired democratic movements worldwide.

What sets this documentary apart is its commitment to portraying the Revolution through the eyes of a diverse cast of historical figures. Viewers encounter not only famous leaders like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, but also Continental soldiers, Loyalists, Native Americans, enslaved and free African Americans, women, and foreign allies from France, Spain, and Germany. Their stories are brought to life through letters, diaries, and expert commentary,

narrated by a star-studded cast including Morgan Freeman, Meryl Streep, and Paul Giamatti.

The series also challenges long-held myths, revealing the Revolution’s contradictions—its simultaneous fight for liberty and complicity in slavery, its displacement of Native peoples, and its enduring questions about democracy and equality. With stunning cinematography and meticulous research, The American Revolution is not just a historical documentary—it’s a reflection on the ideals and struggles that continue to shape the American identity today.

The American Revolution premieres at the time that America is marking the 250th anniversary of the war’s beginning in spring 1775, and the upcoming semiquincentennial of the Declaration of Independence. For more information about this film, visit pbs.org/kenburns/the-american-revolution/.

Watch The American Revolution starting Sunday, Nov. 16 at 7:00 Central, 6 Mountain, and repeated each night at 9:00 Central, 8:00 Mountain on SDPB TV.

Blood from Whitestone

On September 3, 1863, General Alfred Sully's troops attacked a tipi camp of Yanktonai, some Dakota, Hunkpapa Lakota, and Blackfeet (Sihasapa Lakota), as part of a military mission to punish participants of the Dakota Conflict of 1862. Many Indian men, women, and children died or were captured. Military casualties were comparatively light. The Indians also suffered the destruction of virtually all their property, leaving them nearly destitute for the coming winter.

The film Blood from Whitestone tells the history of this massacre as tribal members take part in a memorial ride from burial grounds on the Crow Creek Reservation to the Whitestone Hill massacre site near Kulm, ND.

Watch Monday, Nov. 3 at 8:00pm Central, 7 Mountain on SDPB TV.

Lessons of Thanksgiving

Gratitude takes on a profound depth when we reflect on the lives of children with disabilities. These children teach us to appreciate resilience, celebrate small victories, and recognize the beauty in diverse ways of experiencing the world. Their journeys often require strength, patience, and creativity—not just from them, but from their families, educators, and communities. This Thanksgiving SDPB is proud to share stories.

FashionABLE

From Rapid City, FashionABLE highlights designers with disabilities and their volunteer partners, culminating in a biennial fashion show called “FashionABLE: All-Ability Threads.” The film explores the creative process and relationships formed during the month-long journey to the show.

I Am disABLED

I Am disABLEd follows young performers as they stage Seussical the Musical, showcasing youth with various disabilities, including autism, bipolar disorder, and Down syndrome, as performers and the student crew behind the scenes fostering teamwork and confidence.

Dominique

Dominique is a 28-year-old born with Down Syndrome, but that does not keep her from striving for new goals and interacting with her community. With a supporting family, Dominique is an independent woman living in Spearfish. The film follows Dominique over 5 days and explores the everyday life of a tightknit family as they navigate life's challenges with resilience, gratitude, and unconditional love.

A Look Ahead

The holidays are a time for family and friends. We are gathering some of your favorite holiday shows and other programs so you may gather together and enjoy some quiet times in this hectic season.

In December watch for Christmas music specials from Purdue, Murray State, Concordia, St. Thomas, St. Olaf, and the US Army Field Band. We present Hope of the Season: Christmas with the Tabernacle Choir, The Nutcracker from the English National Ballet, and the Call the Midwife Holiday Special

Two sons of the plains are highlighted in documentaries during December. Learn about Hubert Humphrey’s nascent political career in Mayor Humphrey of Minneapolis and enjoy a look at Lawrence Welk’s life and legacy in Lawrence Welk: A North Dakota Farm Boy

Another Midwest kid known by millions is Dick Van Dyke. As we inch toward his 100th birthday, American Masters talks to the star
