Welcome to Camp!
Dear Campers and Families,
Summer camp season is almost here! This year’s theme is “Your Summer, Your Story." You have four camp properties—Balboa Campus, Escondido Program Center, Whispering Oaks, and Winacka—to choose from, which means every camper has an opportunity to shape their memorable experience with girls from across San Diego and Imperial counties. Whether it’s tackling the ropes course, hiking scenic trails, or roasting s’mores, each girl can create her own story.
Our camps provide a supportive space where girls can be themselves, explore new skills, build friendships, and connect with caring people. Outdoor adventures help give girls the tools to boost their independence, confidence, and overall well-being while providing a healthy break from technology and social pressures.
Camp is more than a destination—it’s an invitation to discover.
One of my favorite memories as a Girl Scout was going to Camp Whispering Pines in Michigan: I remember being nervous about not knowing anyone. But within a few hours of arriving, my tent mates and I bonded about how we all loved Olivia NewtonJohn. As we hiked together, learned to canoe (so fun!), and chatted every night before falling asleep, one of my tent mates became a dear friend, and we remained pen pals for years.

Not a Girl Scout Yet? Not a Problem!
Camp is a great first Girl Scout experience and the perfect way to jump in. Girl Scout membership is $45; when you register for camp, you'll automatically be signed up for a Girl Scout membership, which gives you access to exciting opportunities through the end of our current membership year (Sept. 30, 2026). Financial assistance is available.

GSSD Camp Basics
Programs and Activities
All campers participate in traditional camp activities like team building, campfires, and outdoor adventures. Each group of campers and staff also plan some of their own activities, which gives campers an opportunity to practice leadership. Activities are differentiated by age level and include hiking, target sports, nature exploration, swimming, challenge courses, arts and crafts, and sleep outs.
Camp Buddies
Campers may register to be placed with one friend for the week, who must be registered for the same program (sleepaway camp) or within the same level of Girl Scouts or the same multi-level camp (day camp). Enter buddy information during camp registration.
Camp Staff
All camp staff members are 18 years or older and are selected for their maturity, skills, experience, and enthusiasm. Many of our counselors were Girl Scout campers as youth, and many return year after year. Staff are trained in CPR, first aid, child development, and activity leadership, and comply with California Assembly Bill 506 by completing a background check, Live Scan fingerprinting, and mandated reporter training. As an equal opportunity employer, Girl Scouts San Diego welcomes staff of all genders and backgrounds to join our team. Male staff members are never alone with campers without a female counselor present and do not sleep in spaces with Girl Scouts.
Extended Day Camp
Extended Day Camp is available at no extra charge at our Balboa Campus.
Drop-Off Hours: 7:30-8:30 a.m.
Pick-Up Hours: 3-6 p.m.
Extended Camp is also available at no extra charge for Winacka Day Camp from 7:30-8:30 a.m.
Note: Extended Camp is not available at Escondido Program Center or any offsite camps. Sign up for Extended Camp during registration.
ACA Accreditation
All Girl Scouts San Diego camps are accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). This national organization focuses on program quality and health and safety issues and requires camp managers to meet rigorous standards. GSSD is proud to meet these important criteria. Sleepaway Transportation
Round-trip transportation is available for five-day and three-day sleepaway camps ($45 each way; $90 roundtrip).
Camp staff supervise bus trips to ensure a fun and safe experience. Alternatively, families may drive their campers directly to camp in Julian at no cost. Sign up for bus transportation during camp registration.
For Five-Day Sleepaway Camp, the bus stops are at Mission Valley and Escondido Program Center for both pick up on Monday and drop off on Friday.
For Three-Day Sleepaway Camp, the bus stops at Mission Valley and Escondido for pick up on Monday. The bus will drop campers off on Wednesday at our Escondido Program Center and at our Balboa Campus.

Camp Scholarships
As a mission-driven nonprofit organization, Girl Scouts San Diego is committed to serving the needs of all girls in our community. We believe everyone should have the opportunity to build courage, confidence, and character at camp!
Thanks to generous donors, we can provide Camperships that reduce the cost of camp so anyone can participate, regardless of ability to pay. Camperships are granted based on a sliding scale designed to fit each applicant’s unique financial situation. In your registration confirmation email, you will receive a link to apply for financial assistance.
Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
Did you know that you can use your Dependent Care FSA to pay for GSSD’s summer day camps and yearround day camps? Please note: Sleepaway camp is not eligible. Learn more by connecting with your benefits provider or reviewing your plan details.

Earn Camp Session
Girl Scouts who reach the 1,000-package level during the 2026 program can earn an eligible five-day session at either sleepaway or day camp. Eligible sessions are noted in the session descriptions.
When registering for camp, select the “payment plan” option and pay the $50 deposit per camp. Once the 1,000-package goal is confirmed at the end of the cookie program, the deposit will be refunded. Cookie program participants can also earn Cookie Buck Program Credit rewards, which can be applied to camp fees.

Program Aides (PAs) and Counselors-inTraining (CITs) are campers in grades 6-12 who partner with adult staff to lead activities and support younger campers. Carefully designed with progression in mind, the PA and CIT programs let you practice personal leadership in a safe and supportive environment, giving you the foundation to lead anywhere.

At our Balboa Campus, every week opens a new chapter in a storybook summer filled with imagination, friendship, and fun. With themed weeks inspired by favorite books, every camper becomes the hero of their own summer adventure.
About Balboa Campus Day Camp
The property includes spacious indoor cabins with air conditioning, covered porches, open outdoor areas, and campfire rings that are perfect for end-of-day storytelling.
At Balboa Day Camp, every camper is guaranteed time for classic Girl Scout adventure fun like nature activities, art projects, and teambuilding games, plus:

Once Upon a Summer...What a fairytale!
Once upon a summer’s start, all campers came to play. Fairytale dress-ups, royal crowns, and tea parties fill five fun days!

Buttercup’s Spy School...What a top-secret summer!
Our Balboa Day Camp mascot, Buttercup, is excited to share top secret missions with you. Help to solve our camp mystery as you learn new camp skills too!

Festival of Funshine...What a sun-soaked celebration!
It’s a short week (4-day camp week) packed with big fun! Campers will jump, climb, laugh, and play their way through our first-ever Festival of Funshine, complete with camp-wide games and all the bright summer energy you can handle. Everyone will cool off with water games and take part in special celebrations designed to make this week sparkle.

A Series of Scientific Events...What a week of wild discoveries!
Curiosity is the spark this week! Campers will roll up their sleeves and dive into hands-on experiments, wacky reactions, and innovative challenges during our Series of Scientific Events. From fizzing potions to engineering feats, each day brings a new way to explore how science connects to everyday life.

The Crafting Chronicles...What an imaginative summer!
Crafts, jewelry making, and all things art. The only question is: where should the fun for this week start?
From color to construction, creativity takes center stage at Balboa this week. Campers will roll up their sleeves, think outside the box, and bring your ideas to life through hands-on projects big and small. Whether you’re sculpting, designing, or building something brand-new, everyone will leave their mark on this unforgettable chapter of summer.

Technology Goddesses™ at EPC

About Escondido Program Center Day Camp
Located in the heart of Kit Carson Park, the Escondido Program Center includes a large lodge with a fireplace, multiple restrooms, air conditioning, shaded porches, archery range, water mister, sports field, and a campfire ring.

Transportation and camp registration will be provided to a designated number of girls (K-6) thanks to the generous support of the Booz Allen Foundation. The bus will transport girls between the Malcolm X Library, the Balboa Campus, and the EPC. Camp of Code at EPC Day Camp: Monday, July 20-Friday, July 24
At this “camp of code,” learn teamwork, leadership, and analytical thinking skills while you become immersed in technology. This camp offers age-appropriate activities within deaf education, communication, and artificial intelligence. Plus, enjoy traditional day camp activities like arts and crafts, team games, and outdoor adventures.

About Winacka Day Camp

At WIN Day Camp, program activities are pre-planned to explore the Outdoor Adventures theme, and each group of campers and staff also plan their own activities based on campers’ interests and ages, giving them an opportunity for girl-leadership at camp.

Frequently Asked Questions
If my camper becomes sick or injured at camp, how will they receive help?
All Day Camp and Sleepaway camp staff are certified in First Aid and CPR and carry a first aid kit with their unit at all times. Camp staff manage a child's medical emergency or illness through a structured procedure: a trained medical professional on-site first assesses the child and provides immediate care. For serious conditions, parents are contacted immediately, and the child is transported to a local clinic or hospital (via camp transport or EMS) with a staff member escort, using the parent-provided medical consent forms to ensure prompt treatment until the parent can arrive.
What should I do if my camper needs to bring medications to camp?
Complete the Camper Health and Medication Form during registration, and, update two to three weeks before your camp session if needed. Please send all medications with your camper in their original containers. All medications will be safely locked up, stored appropriately, and distributed by a trained professional. Counselors will keep any emergency medications (i.e. inhalers, EpiPens, glucagon) on hand at all times. If you would like your camper to carry their own emergency medication, please email camp@sdgirlscouts.org.
How are dietary restrictions handled at camp?
Please communicate dietary restrictions on the Camper Health and Medication Form during the registration process. We can accommodate most dietary restrictions with advanced notice. All our day and sleepaway camps are nut-free; please do not send any items containing peanuts or tree nuts with your camper to camp.
Can I send snacks with my sleepaway camper?
Due to the wild animals at camp, please do not send snacks with your camper to sleepaway camp (Winacka or Whispering Oaks). We provide daily snacks for campers, such as cereal bars, fruits, pretzels, chips, and more!
What if my camper becomes sick before camp? Please keep them at home. If space allows, we will transfer your camper to a camp at a later date. You can help protect the camp community by staying healthy in the weeks before your session and staying home if you are sick.
Can I send mail to my camper?
Campers may receive regular U.S. mail. No packages, please. Caregivers may also drop mail off at the bus stops on Mondays. Campers may respond via U.S. mail only. With only one week at camp (for most camps), it’s possible that mail may only be received one time at camp or at home
How should I communicate any special needs or accommodations that my camper may need?
When filling out the registration and health forms, please provide us with as much information as possible so we can best help your camper. If you need additional space or would like to explain further, email us at camp@sdgirlscouts.org.
Campers with Special Needs
With sufficient notice, we can accommodate most campers with special physical, medical, emotional, social, or dietary needs. Fill out the Camper Health and Medication Form in detail during registration. Contact the director at camp@sdgirlscouts.org at least four weeks in advance of the start of the session with specific considerations.
What is your communicable disease protocol?
Girl Scouts San Diego will follow any local and CDC infectious disease mandates that are in place when camp is in session. Masks are always welcome for additional protection. Masks will not be worn while eating, drinking, and sleeping, or during aquatic activities like swimming or canoeing.
What are the required health screenings and procedures upon arrival at sleepaway camp?
Upon arrival to camp drop-off location (bus stop or camp), each camper will be asked to answer general health-check questions in addition to health screenings, including a lice check and temperature check. If your camper is found to have any evidence of communicable health concerns, such as a fever, lice, or nits, your camper will not be allowed to join camp until the issue is appropriately treated/resolved. The healthcare staff will communicate with you to determine when your camper is able to join the camp session.

About Whispering Oaks Sleepaway Camp
Camper Living Spaces: Enclosed cabins are centered around the main lodge and have electricity, bunk beds, and flush toilets; hot showers are accessible to all accommodations. Counselors stay in cabins with campers of all age levels. Campers in certain sessions will have the opportunity to plan a sleepout either under the stars or in a tent in a different location. If sleeping at a tent site, counselors sleep in pitch tents adjacent to camper tents.
Activities at Camp Whispering Oaks are held at the lodge, challenge course, play field, playground, arts shed, target sports range, and on the trails. Every camper gets to dabble (weather permitting) in classic camp adventures that align with their age group like:

Lights, Camera, Action...What a creative summer!
Will you create a vlog about your favorite camp activity, practice your public speaking skills, write your very own mini musical, or support the production behind-the-scenes? All campers will participate in an end-of-week showcase, highlighting your efforts in pre-production, backstage, or centerstage for your fellow campers.

Whether you’re a Brownie or Junior ready to explore sleepaway camp, this three-day, two-night MondayWednesday camp session is the perfect way to take your first steps into the great outdoors. Spend your days hiking, playing games, singing songs, crafting, and exploring nature’s wonders. From slingshots and creative crafts to cozy cabin nights and new friendships, this adventure is all about exploring, learning, and making memories that will last a lifetime.

Naturally Curious...What an intriguing summer!
This week is all about campers who are naturally curious—the explorers, question-askers, and future scientists eager to discover how things work and why. From animal encounters and climbing adventures to real-world life skills, every activity is designed to spark exploration, challenge, and self-discovery.

Globetrotters...What a worldly summer!
Pack your sense of adventure—it’s time to travel the globe, Whispering Oaks-style! Campers will explore cultures, games, art, and flavors from around the world, all within the magical backdrop of camp. Every day is a new “destination” filled with creativity, connection, and fun that brings our global sisterhood to life. .

Memory Makers...What a memorable summer!
It’s time to take a bow and celebrate the best moments! During our final act, campers will reflect on their favorite memories and make new ones along the way. From time travel and storytelling to fashion, art, and camp traditions, this week wraps up summer at CWO with creativity, laughter, and heart.
12-day Camp Sessions for CIT I and CIT II Training: During CWO Sleepaway Sessions
As CITs (Counselors-in-Training) I and II, continue your leadership journey as you learn advanced camper engagement techniques, activity facilitation, and the behind-the-scenes magic of camp operations. While you help to make the sessions at CWO a success for younger campers, you’ll also enjoy time with your unit doing classic camp activities. This is your opportunity to mentor with confidence and take your leadership to the next level! For Sleepaway Camp, Counselors-in-Training who have completed all of the prerequisites may register for a “CIT I” or “CIT II” session based on your level. Note: Completion of a CIT I program is a required prerequisite to register as a CIT II. See page 8 for more information.

About Winacka Sleepaway Camp
Camper Living Spaces: Living units are nestled among tall trees surrounding a wide, sunny meadow. Counselors sleep in cabins with campers in grades 2–5, and in nearby cabins with campers in grades 6–12. Each living unit includes a central porch and fire ring, perfect for storytelling, s’mores, and starlit gatherings. Flush toilets and hot showers are accessible to all accommodations.
Activities at Camp Winacka are held at the lodge, swimming pool, lake, environmental center, challenge course, target sports range, equestrian arena and on the trails. Every camper gets to dabble (weather permitting) in classic camp adventures that align with their age group like:

Operation Rescue Rusty... What a mysterious summer!
Something strange is afoot at Camp Winacka—our beloved camp mascot, Rusty, has gone missing! During our five-day sleepaway camp sessions, campers of every age will join the investigation, collecting clues, cracking codes, and piecing together the mystery to bring Rusty home. From spy training to outdoor adventures, teamwork, and problem-solving, each cabin will play a special role in the search. Can you solve the mystery before the end-of-week campfire?
Week Two: Monday, June 29-Friday, July 3
Winacka Mess-terpiece...What a messy summer!
Dig in the dirt, splash some paint and play with your food! Break all of the school year rules and get messy all week at camp with us! Campers will dive into hands-on projects that celebrate color, texture, and imagination — from sticky science to artsy outdoor games.
Week Three: Monday, July 6-Friday, July 10
Making Waves...What a refreshing summer!
It’s time to dive into the heart of summer! Campers will make a splash with water-filled adventures, creative challenges, and community spirit! Whether building friendships at the lake or cooling off in the pool or exploring what it means to make waves in your world, this week is packed with connection, courage, and camp fun. Make waves both in and out of the water this week. Enjoy extended time on the lake, design and test-run a slip n-slide or complete secret missions to spread kindness throughout camp.
Week Four: Monday, July 13-Friday, July 17
I’ve Got the (Outdoor) Skills...What a masterful summer!
Grab your boots, hats, and adventurous spirit — this week is all about mastering the great outdoors! Campers will learn outdoor living skills, from navigation and nature exploration to cooking and teamwork. Whether you’re exploring the lake, conquering trails, or building confidence under the open sky, this session celebrates courage, independence, and fun in the wild.
Week Five: Monday, July 20-Friday, July 24
Reach for the Stars...What a magical finale!
As the sun sets on another unforgettable summer at Camp Winacka, this week is all about imagination, reflection, and celebration. From enchanted explorations to stargazing adventures, campers will wrap up their summer journey with creativity, connection, and a sprinkle of cosmic wonder. We will all take a look towards the sky and with a clear sky, catch a glimpse of the Perseid meteor shower!
