Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off set for June 25 BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON Thousands will flock to Ocean Beach to enjoy food, drinks, chili, live music, art and great people watching at the 37th annual Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival on Saturday, June 25. The free festival will include an oceanfront chili cook-off, vendor and food booths, Artists Alley, a beachside beer garden, live music and entertainment, family friendly activities, carnival rides and games, art, the Community Mural Project and more. The street fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the 4800 to 5000 blocks of Newport Avenue, along the waterfront and in the pier parking lot, and along the cross streets of Newport Avenue at Bacon Street and Cable Street. Free trolley services will run for people parking near Robb Field (every 30 minutes) and on Sea World Drive at Pacific Coast Highway (every hour) from 9:30 a.m.to 9 p.m. There will also be a free bike valet at the intersection of Bacon Street and Newport Avenue, courtesy of the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition. The highlight of this year's fest will be the 50th anniversary celebration of the OB Pier, which opened on July 2, 1966. Ocean Beach MainStreet Association will commemorate the pier with photos dating back to its inception in 1966, and information about the OB Pier’s rich history in partnership with the Ocean Beach Historical Society. Other pier activities will include a kids fishing game, photo kiosk with a lifesize photo backdrop of the pier’s opening cel-

ebration in 1966, Living Coast Discovery Center’s interactive crab display and the opportunity to sign up for the San Diego Junior Lifeguard Foundation’s annual pier jump. The Kiss tribute band will be back to rally the crowd. This time they'll support the Year of the Pier by donning their ’60s
surfer best and rocking out to the Beach Boys. Attendees can stop by Rock and Roll San Diego’s booth to get a free 15minute music lesson alongside the wild and zany Kiss tribute band, as they’re dressed in full face painting with long hair and Hawaiian shirts. The booth will also have drawings, giveaways and loads of

cool stuff. The chili competition will feature more than 20 tastings from amateur entrants competing for the titles of Hottest Chili, Judges’ Award and the grand prize winner: People’s Choice Award. Chili tastings will begin at 11 a.m. and will end when contestants run out of samples. Tastings
can be purchased for $2 per chili entry, or attendees can buy a master ticket for $20 to try every recipe and vote for the best. The Hodad’s Burger-Eating Competition is back by popular demand offering contestants a chance to be featured on the Hodad’s Wall of Fame at its Ocean Beach site. The Bloody Mary competition will also make a return with 15 local restaurants and bars competing for the title of Best Bloody Mary in Ocean Beach. Tickets can be purchased for $20 to sample each entry and vote for your favorites. Children and adults of all ages are welcome to purchase a $10 square to contribute to this year’s Community Mural Project. Visit the mural area on Bacon Street just south of Newport to reserve and then paint your square. After the Street Fair, the murals are sealed and installed in the community. On Cable Street, Artists Alley will feature accomplished artists and their handcrafted items. Family-friendly attractions include the Wonderland Fun Zone in the parking lot adjacent to US Bank near Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and Newport Avenue. The Zone will have a 20-foot slide, OB Express Train Ride for the little ones, Zip Line, Zorb balls, Hop ’n’ Rock, laser tag, kids games and more. Chuck Schiele comes back to play Bad Science Fiction Longtime Ocean Beach resident Chuck Schiele relocated to the East Coast in 2010, but he returns this summer to perform with his band, Bad Science Fiction, on the Street Fair’s Main Stage at 12:30 p.m. “We’re retro hard rock with a hip hop attitude,” Schiele said good-naturedly. “We threw the idea of attempting ‘cool’ right out the window. Cool is boring. We're just having fun.” Before heading east, Schiele had been a mainstay of the local music community and an integral part of the OBMA, including much of the music programming. “I still consider OB home,” he said. “Just because I have to take care of some things on the East Coast doesn't mean I've left OB. Believe me. I'm still there.” Though the band, which includes Schiele on vocals and guitar, lead guitarist Michael Head, bassist Tony Sandoval, keyboardist John Miller and drummer Don Wiseman, rarely performs, according to Schiele, ramping things up, “is not hard at all. It takes one email and everybody's on board, enthusiastic and ready to rock. We don't feel rusty, whatsoever.” Rehearsal is set for the
Thursday prior to the show. “We have a blast,” Schiele said. “These are terrific musicians with no excuses for their music. We make some minor nudges and introduce new material, sharpen it up, blow the dust off it, put it on 11 and hit it. “We're all very tight friends, so tequila and barbecue follows our rehearsal by tradition. We probably get our groove tighter more by hanging out and having a few laughs as bros than we do wailing through the set.” He looks forward to playing the main stage, with a minor reservation. “I guess I miss the light show aspect, but, I prefer to look at gigs in the sunshine on the bright side. I can see the audience on outdoor gigs. In OB, that's good,” he laughed. Schiele hopes to return to OB full time eventually and continue his life immersed in music on the West Coast. “It's not a hobby, not just a job, not at all a casual endeavor, for me,” he said. “It’s my way of life. I still wake up in the key of D, every day and engage with other bohemian, thinker, creative types doing creative stuff and rendering solutions, because, well... that's just what I do,” he said

Chili Cook-Off raises funds for Ocean Beach’s annual fireworks show BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON There is no shortage of things to do at the Ocean Beach Street Fair, but the one essential stop is at its signature event, the Chili Cook-Off. Located at the foot of Veterans Avenue, right on the water with the best view of the whole event, the cook off is a lot of fun with boisterous chefs and their crew doing what they can to garner votes for their chili in a friendly competition. You’ll want to get there early. While the tasting doesn’t start until 11 a.m. the line can start forming up to an hour earlier. Tickets for tasting and judging the various entrants chili is the same as last year: $2 for two servings or you can get a people’s choice ticket for $20 allowing you to sample chili from all the competitors. There are two categories with almost two dozen cooks represented. Contestants are judged in two categories, restaurant and amateur, with criteria set to include consistency, smell, color and taste. Both meat and vegetarian chili will be available, but even with all those competitors the food goes fast. Another 60 gallons of chili will be provided by area restaurant Shades Oceanfront Bistro and Craves Café. Even set alongside the 10 gallons from each of the contestants, it’s all gone by 2 p.m. The Chili Cook-Off is now in its 32nd year, founded in 1984 by Mike Akey, a member of the OBMA board
of directors, with money raised by the event going to help fund Ocean Beach’s annual fireworks display. According to Akey, while ingredients vary and some can include ingredients as diverse as rattlesnake and alligator, “the biggest difference in competitors is the heat,” he said. “Some booths try to ramp up demand up demand for their wares by having themed booths and costumes. Bedsides the awards for the chili, we also have an award for the most enthusiastic entrant. You can always tell who has the most popular by the lines at their booths.” Other prizes are awarded for “People’s Choice” and “Hottest Chili” For his part, after more than 30 years of Chili Cook Offs, Akey is just as enthusiastic as ever about the event. “I was born and raised here, so It’s great fun for a good cause,” he said. But does he still enjoy eating it as much as he used to? “Once a year does me just fine now,” he joked.

Wonderland fun zone for kids at Street Fair BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON The Ocean Beach Street Fair is fun for all ages, but there is a special area specifically designed to include younger fairgoers, Wonderland. Located at the 4800 block of Newport Avenue, the fun zone is named for an amusement park that stood in Ocean Beach exactly a century ago. The area is all new this year, with EMS Attractions providing 11 of their best rides and interactive games. While the fun zone focus of the area is on the younger set, there is plenty for those who are only young at heart to enjoy. “We try to match attractions to the area,” noted Tracy Ring, co-ordinator of the days activities for EMS Attractions. “Ocean Beach has such a funky, beachy vibe that is so unique,” she said. The centerpiece of the whole area will be The Swashbuckler Zip Line, a giant inflatable pirate
ship from which riders can propel down. At more than three stories tall, this attraction will also offer the best view of the whole street fair. Meanwhile, there will also be a trackless kiddie train, the OB Express, roaming Wonderland, which parents and children can ride together. “We will have things like toddler jumps that are specifically for younger children,” said Ring. With chairs and tables available for a mid-street fair pause, Wonderland is the perfect spot for parents to rest while their children play. The family friendly nature of the area extends to the vendors, which will include all the kids favorites, from ice cream to cotton candy, but there will also be plenty of healthier options. The Wonderland area will also spotlight an eclectic group of entertainers, with mimes, clowns, face painting, magicians, carnival booths and more to keep kids occupied. Meanwhile, the
areas stage will feature performances from acoustic acts, such as harmony based trio Siren’s Lure & Pirate John and bands like the Santana Brothers, a combo made up of Point Loma High students who excel at covers of everyone from Chuck Berry to Bruno Mars. New this year, the activity will extend beyond the Wonderland borders, into Veterans Plaza at the foot of Newport. “A new game will take place right after the chili cook-off,” said Ring. “Body Bubble Soccer,” will find players wearing large inflatable plastic bubbles as they try to score a goal, it’s a lot of fun to play and to watch.” Whether you are into the interactive challenges or simply want to enjoy some quality time with your youngster, a visit to Wonderland is an essential part of your Street Fair day.

Find unique and locally made goods at Artists Alley BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON Since Ocean Beach’s has a reputation as an artist’s community, it’s only natural that the Street Fair’s Artists Alley would be a major attraction. Located on two blocks of Cable Street at Newport Avenue, fairgoers will find an impressive variety of handmade arts and crafts, with a little bit of everything, from body jewelry to paintings of local scenery, tiedyed clothing to musical instruments, even skincare and bath items, all hand-crafted. With the actual artisan on hand you’ll be able to meet the person who created your items. “It’s really a special area,” said OBMA executive director Denny Knox. “There is something for just about everyone, and all the different vendors displays can make things very colorful.” She is happy that the Street Fair has become something

that helps local artists. “For some this is the big event of the year,” she said. “It’s nice to see artists who return each year and what they have that’s new.” Artists Alley is the perfect spot to find a unique gift, with one of a kind treasures at every booth. Amongst this year’s highlights are handmade hula hoops from Unity Hoops as well as a line of Victorianinfluenced women's clothing, from Pretty Fancy. However the winner of the most unusual booth promises to be Robots, featuring the works of Matt Q. Spangler, such as “paintings, prints and books of an ordinary robot, doing ordinary things.” With an artist’s imagination the only limit to what might be found in Artists Alley, it is one of the “must see” areas of the Street Fair. OB Street Fair highlights the best in local music BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON
main difficulty playing outdoors in any setting is dealing with nature. I remember playing last year and it was lightly sprinkling, and sometimes you play outside in direct sun – it totally depends on the day and you have to go with it,” he said. For Wigler and Head, organizing such a large group of musicians and infrastructure is a labor of love. “What keeps me doing it is my love for volunteering in the Ocean Beach community,” he said. “I personally don't have the finances to give to the community, so the only way I can truly give it is my time. I've watched events like this go away in other communities, so I cherish the ability to do this in Ocean Beach,” he said.
The annual Ocean Beach Street Fair has many things going for it, including great weather, proximity to the beach and of course, the chili, but without a doubt the biggest draw is the music. Music fans attending the event will find nearly three dozen of the area’s top performers playing on five different stages. The Main Stage is booked by Ted Wigler, who handles the same duties at Winston’s as well as the 710 Beach Club, with Michael Head, of Head Trap Recording Studios, taking care of the remaining stages.
Wonderland Stage The mix of bands on this year’s bill truly showcase the musical diversity of the San Diego arts community, with an emphasis on Ocean Beach resident musicians. Volunteers are the core to Street Fair’s success It’s no secret that volunteers are the lifeblood of the Ocean Beach Street Fair. Without them it wouldn’t be possible to stage an event of this size. Even with so many helping hands involved, according to OBMA executive director Denny Knox, one volunteer, Michele Amsterdam, stands out, not only for her willingness to pitch in wherever needed, but also as she’s a part time Obecian. The rest of the year, she’s a resident of Fort Worth, Texas. “We just love having her. She does so much,” said Knox. “She’s really become an integral part of our group.” This year, Amsterdam can be found running the Street Fair’s info and merchandise booth as well as “helping out with anything else that needs doing,” she said. Amsterdam had fallen in love with OB on previous visits while her son lived here. Upon her retirement, she knew where she wanted to spend her summers. But she was restless.
“I knew I wanted to be in Ocean Beach, especially when it’s so hot back in Fort Worth, but if I was going to be here, I felt I might as well be doing something,” Amsterdam said good naturally. “I was just looking for something to do, as I’m not one of those ladies who just likes to ‘do lunch.’ I kept walking by the OBMA offices, so I thought why not go in and say ‘Hi.’” Welcomed with open arms, that visit has now turned into more than a decade of volunteering for Amsterdam. Amsterdam is happy to contribute to her adopted hometown and pleased with what she’s found in Ocean Beach. “I don’t really know many of my neighbors, back in Fort Worth,” she said. “But here people stop me on the street to say ‘hello.’ It’s a wonderful place.”
Ocean Beach Pier 50th Anniversary celebration set for July 2 The Ocean Beach Pier’s 50th Anniversary celebration will take place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 2 at the pier, which opened on July 2, 1966. Special activities on the pier include:

Pick up a free OB Pier postcard west of the Walking On Water Cafe on the pier. Supplies are limited – first come, first served. Have your postcard (or any other mail) marked with a Special Pictorial Cancellation by the United States Postal Service. They will have a temporary philatelic station (the “OB Pier 50th Anniversary Station”) west of the Walking On Water Cafe on the pier and our custom-designed postmark to mark all mail sent through them that day. Postage stamps will be available for purchase. OB Pier 50th Anniversary commemorative merchandise will be available for purchase west of the Walking On Water Cafe on the pier. Enjoy an historical display exploring the pier’s rich history and fun props to use while snapping a quick photo in front of a life-size backdrop of the pier opening in 1966 west of the Walking On Water Cafe on the pier. Free shuttles will be available to transport visitors from the pier entrance at the foot of Niagara Avenue to the end of the pier. A short ceremony honoring the pier with elected officials will take place 11 a.m. just outside the pier entry gates at the foot of Niagara Avenue. The Ocean Beach Community Foundation will be unveiling a new plaque at that location. The two gentlemen featured in our OB Pier oral history video – Leonard Teyssier, the contractor who built the pier, and Chuck Bahde, who served on Peninsulans Inc., which commissioned the pier – will be on hand from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. to meet community members and answer questions about the pier. They will be west of the Walking On Water Cafe on the pier. An exhibit at Teeter gallery/boutique at 5032 Niagara Ave. will feature pierinspired art from local artists running June 30 through July 31.

Jam and The Who, the group took home the “Best New Artist” trophy at the 2015 San Diego Music Awards. The quartet does include a few choices covers in their set, by the likes of the Small Faces, but it’s their adrenaline charged originals such as “Can’t Stop Me,” that have won audiences over. The band is working on their debut album but live is where the Bassics really take flight.
Dani Bell and the Tarantist The sound of masked duo, singer Dani Bell and the Tarantist, aka percussionist Al Howard, is hard to pinpoint, but it’s kaleidoscope of influences includes dreamy indie pop, girl group sounds, ’70s era soul and lots of rhythm. The unifying factor is a strong sense of melody, with songs like “Best Without Me” or “Guilty” being instant earworms. “I love playing outside in San Diego because 98 percent of the time it's a beautiful day,” Howard said. “The crowd is always a great and lively one. OB wields less of a filter than a lot of other communities, people really let go and surrender to the music. It's a fun vibe to play off of.

John Tafolla Guitarist John Tafolla, local musician and songwriter, while in high school played with Rosie and the Originals and opened for the Rolling Stones. While playing with the Mustangs, they opened up for Tina Turner. John being from Ocean Beach has played many local restaurants and social affairs. With his band the Insights in 1966, he played at the opening celebration of the OB Pier.
