Ocean Beach Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off Festival offers something for everyone Chili, bikini, Bloody Mary and burger-eating contests throughout the day, plus an interactive music area that teaches fairgoers to be rockers BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON Now in its 36th year, The Ocean Beach Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off remains one of San Diego’s best community events. With its mix of sun, surf, food and music, it’s safe to say there is nothing else like it. More than 70,000 are expected to enjoy the good vibes, great weather and top-rate performers along the town’s downtown corridor. Eventgoers strolling down Newport Avenue and its cross-streets will find tons of free activities to stimulate the senses along with the fresh sea air. Meanwhile, more than 250 vendors and artisans will be on hand, offering foods from around the world, arts and crafts from jewelry to paintings and even a few unique rides for kids of all ages. in ten minutes.” How realistic is it to think that someone can play in ten minutes? “It has worked every time we try it,” said Rock and Roll San Diego owner Mark Langford. “We break the song down to its basics, such as the root of each chord, and many songs only have two or three chords,” he explained. No musical skills are needed? “No, just the desire to try,” Langford said. “The singing is a bit trickier, but we pick songs that most people have heard before, so they already have it in their head, and we give them a lyric sheet with the words. We also try to pick songs with a few words that repeat,” he commented. After 13 years, Ocean Beach Street Fair headliner Big Mountain returns with a new album, “Perfect Summer.” Best known for their 1994 No. 6 hit, “Baby I Love Your Way,” Big Mountain has always been a major draw, particularly in outdoor settings, where their reggae music can be heard to full effect. “Big Mountain took a break in about

the year 2003,” bandleader Joaquin (Quino) McWhinney explained. “I went back to school and settled into a career in teaching, and life just sort of took over. We made several attempts to rekindle the fire, but without a label or proper management, we couldn't find the initiative to get the band back together,” he said. The new album has been composed and produced within the last three years. “It coincided with my move to Ensenada,

where I now live with my family,” McWhinney said. Currently in the middle of albumrelease events, McWhinney is happy to be performing in Ocean Beach. “Ocean Beach holds a very special place in my heart,” he said. “I have always been easily seduced by the counterculture movement. Restaurant and amateur Chili Cook-Off competitions are hot tickets BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON There is plenty to keep attendees of this year’s street fair occupied, but nothing compares with the day's signature event, the Chili Cook-Off, which takes place at Veterans Plaza at the foot of Newport Avenue. If you’re a chili eater, there is no better place in San Diego to sample different varieties of the delicacy. Tasting begins at 11 a.m., though the line starts forming at 10 a.m. Tickets for tasting and judging the various entrants' chili run $2 for two servings, or you can get a people’s choice ticket for $20 allowing you to sample all of the teams' chili. There will be almost two dozen competitors in two categories, restaurant and amateur, with judging based on consistency, smell, color and taste. Both meat and vegetarian chili will be available. But you’re advised to get there early. Even with almost 60 gallons of chili from local restaurant Shades Oceanfront Bistro and Craves Cafe alongside 10 gallons each from the contestants, it’s all gone by 2 p.m. The event was founded in 1984 by current Ocean Beach MainStreet Association board member Mike Akey, who comes from a long

line of chili enthusiasts, including his father Angie Scaramuzzo. He remains the event's head judge on a committee of 10. Months of preparation go into the event. But why a chili cook-off as opposed to another taste treat? “We’ve been doing this for more than 30 years, so at this point, it's tradition,” Akey said. “I could see having beef stew or corn on the cob in the Midwest, but here on the coast, we like our chili,” he said. Those who like their food spicy should look for the thermometers in front of the booths, with the heat index clearly marked. According to Akey, you can generally tell who has the best chili by the length of the lines in front of their stalls, but sometimes the chili itself is second to its surroundings, with teams going out of their way to decorate their workspace and dress in costumes. “People definitely go all out for

this and really make an effort,” Akey said. “We even have awards for that, a Most Spirited Award and one for Best Booth as well.” After all these years and despite months of organizational work, Akey still gets enjoyment out of the cook-off. “I like the camaraderie,” he said. “I like the way people get together and support the teams, all in the name of raising money for the annual fireworks.” Does he still enjoy chili? “I like chili. Once a year, thank you,” Akey laughed.

Upgraded kids zone to be more interactive BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON The Wonderland area, a-k-a the kids zone, located at the 4800 block of Newport Avenue, is getting a new look for this year's street fair. “It’s not Ferris wheels and stuff like that, it’s more interactive,” said organizer Greg Knight, owner of San Diego Kids Party Rentals. The area's landmark giant inflatable slide will remain in place, but rather than a haphazard mix of this and that, this year will feature almost a dozen inflatable attractions.

The area is named for an amusement park that once stood in Ocean Beach, and the new upgraded Wonderland will be a place where parents can allow the kids, ages 3 to 10, to let off a little steam. There will also be a toddler play area. The area's amenities are also kid friendly, with lots of treats available, from healthful options to summertime favorites like cotton candy and snow cones. There will even be a magician, face painting and mimes as well as kid-friendly music at 10 a.m. from the duo Neck & Neck at the nearby Wonderland stage. The

Santana Brothers, comprising students from Point Loma, will appear at 6 p.m. But there will be plenty for all ages as well. The showpiece of the area will easily be the Rugged Warrior Mega Obstacle Course, a 120-foot inflatable challenge, with eight separate sections. The biggest spectator draw will be the Wipeout game, which, just like the TV show, has the contestants pitted against moving obstacles. “That was such a huge hit last year,” Knight said. “People loved to take part, but everyone enjoyed watching as well.”

Meanwhile, there will also be the cliffhanger slide, a wall for rock climbing, an infinite obstacle course and a mechanical shark ride. Even with all those attractions, the area’s biggest draw for parents may be more down to earth. “There will be a lot more places for parents to sit, more tables and so on, this year, especially in the toddler zone, where there will be special slides and things set up,” said Knight. “That way, the parents can relax and watch while the kids go crazy.” Photo by Jim Grant

Artists Alley is full of unique treasures BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON Ocean Beach is known as an artistic community, so it’s only natural that the street fair’s Artists Alley be extra-special. Full of one-of-a-kind treasures, it is indeed one of the event's crown jewels. It’s the perfect opportunity to find a great gift, with special care taken by organizers to include only handmade items and feature as many local artisans as possible. It crosses two blocks of Cable Street at Newport Avenue, where fairgoers will find everything from jewelry to paintings, clothing to musical instruments and skin care and bath items, all hand-crafted and with the artist in attendance. “It makes the whole area special to have just things made by hand,

things you won’t find anywhere else. It’s such a colorful area to wander through as well,” said Ocean Beach MainStreet Association executive director Denny Knox. Among the highlights this year are local San Diego musician Christian Schinelli, who will showcase his '60s and '70s hand screen-printed art, Brellas n Fans, featuring handpainted umbrellas, fans and scrolls, and Surf Screen organics, which makes natural sun screen and lip balm products. But the winner in the most unique contest surely has to be Living Air Ware, which offers a range of earrings, magnets and ornaments “adorned with living, breathing Tillandsia (“air plants”). Clearly, the street fair’s Artists Alley has something for just about everyone!

Local ‘beach bands’ to rock the five stages at OB Street Fair BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON Although there is plenty to see and do at the street fair, the biggest attraction is the music. Attendees will find a wide variety of musical styles scattered across the event's five stages. Booked by Ted Wigler, who handles the same duties at Winston’s and the 710 Beach Club, and Michael Head, of Head Trap Recording Studios, the fair will feature music from more than three dozen performers. Wigler notes that picking the right artists and staying within budget can be difficult. “I have people hit me up all year, local and national, that would love to play this event,” Wigler said. “But unfortunately, the budget that we are constrained to only allows us to pick from the local pool. Dealing with these artists is a bit like herding cats, though we have been doing it for so long we've become accustomed to it and speak their language,” he said. “This year's theme to the event is 'It's All About the Music,' Head points out. “With that in mind, I tried to find seminal SD beach bands. Not surf music per se, but bands that have played, lived and worked within the beach areas.” Yes, it helps for an artist to have a local zip code. “We definitely try to find as many OB bands that fit within the stage and event themes as possible,” Head said. “Artists like Kris Wott, Soul Ablaze, Alfred Howard of Rebecca Jade and the Cold Fact, as well as Jefferson Jay, all fit

this description.” The stages mix a variety of artists with a bit of a theme to them: The Artist Alley stage features a heavy blues influence and roots influence. The bill will be topped by The Shifty Eyed Dogs (6 p.m.), with highlights set to include socially conscious rockers Rhythm and the Method (noon) and gypsy-inspired quintet Quel Bordel. The Wonderland stage includes singer-songwriters and acoustic acts, with featured sets from The Payback, featuring John Miller (1 p.m.), and young rockers The Santana Brothers (5 p.m.). The Ragalan Stage features Americana and alternative rock, including a set from rock group RDG, featuring drum legend Bill Ray (noon) and Irish inspired quartet The Fooks (6 p.m.) among the best bets. Meanwhile, the Indie Yoga 92107 OB stage has a focus on Ocean Beach artists, including such favorites as Chuck Schiele-led indie rock combo Bad Science Fiction (4:30 p.m.) and Super Unloader (6 p.m.) The main stage is possibly the most diverse, set to include music from platinum-selling reggae artists Big Mountain (7 p.m.), rockers Neighbors to the North (1:20 p.m.) and Americana-based sextet The Country Rockin’ Rebels (12:10 p.m.). Wigler's favorite thing about the street fair is a continued sense of community. “It’s seeing people who don't live in Ocean Beach anymore come back year after year just for this event. It always

seems like a reunion for me,” he said. Head agrees. “I love just seeing the people coming together for an amazing event and cause: the OB fireworks. That's the main reason we do this. my life. “Ocean Beach back in the day was the closest thing in San Diego to [the] '60s and '70s. Being a teenager of the '80s, I really resented how much things changed in our country in a matter of a few short years. Ocean Beach was the only way to escape the Reagan revolution that dominated my adolescence.” Ocean Beach also played a major role in McWhinney's musical beginnings. “It was also where the reggae scene was pretty much based. My good friend

Bill Winston opened up Winston’s Beach Club right in time for one of the first bands, Shiloh, to take the stage. We really honed our skills in the club.” That said, McWhinney gives the edge to outdoor gigs when it comes to performing. “It really depends on the gig,” he said. “Great clubs are very fun to play. But being in front of large crowds is also an exhilarating experience. “In both cases, it’s possible to have a bad sound system, which really is about the only thing that can make a gig unbearable. We've even played in a typhoon once in Japan – and it was a blast!”

The 36th annual Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off is Saturday, June 27, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Route 35 bus will detour from 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. in both directions due to the fair. The bus' last stop before its westbound detour will be at Cable Street and Saratoga Avenue; its next available eastbound stop will be at Cable Street and Narragansett Avenue. Its last stop before its eastbound detour will be at Cable Street and Narragansett Avenue; its next available westbound stop will be at Cable Street and Cape May Avenue.

weather most of the time and be part of the festivities. The view from the stage gives a different perspective. There's something about seeing people enjoying themselves. It's a very uniting experience, and for some reason, being outside gives me more of a sense of community.”

A Tribute to Chelsea Flor Michael Head

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

The year's most touching performance will be the tribute to the late singer-songwriter Chelsea Flor, a regular performer at the street fair and local venues. Organized by close friend Sheri Stoltz-

fus, the one-hour slot, beginning at 11 a.m. on the Wonderland Stage, will take the place of Flor’s annual set, with locals performing a mix of Flor’s originals and some of her favorite cover songs. Flor died of breast cancer last December. Artists scheduled to take part include Brenda Panneton, Sweet Joyce Ann, Crystal Pollard and Marian Yamauchi. “She had been holding the same time slot at the Street Fair for several years,” Stoltzfus explained. “[The artists] will be helping me share her original music and some of the other music that she loved.” Considering Flor’s love for the area, this is truly a fitting tribute.

The Shifty-Eyed Dogs One of the town's best blues-inspired bands, the Shifty-Eyed Dogs, performs at 6 p.m. on the Artists Alley Stage. “Outdoor gigs are awesome... as long as there's shade,” jokes frontman and guitarist Scott Mathiasen. “There’s nothing like playing under sunshine

and blue skies.” The band will be performing tracks from their upcoming self-titled album, due out July 9, as well as a few choice covers. “We are doing a mix,” Mathiasen said. “We’ve got songs by Bo Diddley, Howlin' Wolf and Jimi Hendrix. What

The man behind the music: Michael Head BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON It would be impossible to put on an event like the street fair without volunteers. Responsible for everything from picking up litter to setting up signage, volunteers also work in the organizational end, including Michael Head, musician and owner of Head Trapp Music Studios. For the past seven years, Head, along with Ted Wigler, has been involved in all aspects of booking the stages and then keeping things running smoothly on the day. “It’s seven years,” he said, “but before that, I was an unofficial assistant, running various stages, some sound and whatever needed getting done for the music part of the event. Then five years ago, I began arranging stage and sound as well, buying the talent and arranging stage managers/volunteers for the entire event.” As if that weren’t enough, Head also books the music at the weekly OB Farmers Market. His reasoning for wanting to be involved in the Street Fair is succinct. “I always thought it was a cool event, and I loved being part of the music and bringing it to OB. There's no more appreciative of a crowd,” he said. He encourages others to volunteer. “Actually, it's more like once someone is involved, they ask me if they can help out again,” he said. “I even have my son and wife manage a stage, and they have every year since I've been the talent buyer. It's always a family affair in OB.” With more than a decade of involvement in the street fair, Head can still see the magic of the event. “Even though it's been going on for 36 years, it's still special and amazing that it takes place,” he said. “It’s a typical street scene, and then when everything is in place and the first few patrons start walking through, the music starts up and the day transitions, it becomes the OB Street Fair. I love seeing the day unfold, from the wee hours of stage set-up to the vendors rolling in and the busybody hustle and bustle of all the volunteers – [it's] still sort of surreal to me.”

ent types of instruments that people can see, touch and play to get acquainted with, including drums and percussion, a half-dozen guitars both electric and acoustic, a couple basses, a piano, an autoharp, accordion, mini-sitar and a few other instruments.” Langford hopes the free minilesson will inspire some to investigate music further. “We want them to have a lot of fun and hope that a spark will ignite inside them that gives them the desire to explore music from that time on, throughout their life.” Keeping things fresh for the audience, songs such as “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Wild Thing” and “Horse With No Name” will be rotated every 20 minutes, with “students” backed by a group made up of Rock and Roll San Diego’s instructors. Rock and Roll San Diego will also be handing out lots of swag to those who participate and have additional raffles, as well as a card for free additional lessons. Among the street fair’s annual highlights are the Chili Cook-Off and five stages of music as well

as the increasingly popular Artists Alley section. Other events sure to draw crowds to the beer garden stage include a bikini contest, a Bloody Mary contest between local bars and restaurants and

After all these years, Knox is still thrilled to see the crowds on the day of the event. “We start at 3 a.m., and it’s all cleared out by 11 p.m.,” she said. “So it’s a big day. But it’s such a joy to see people streaming into the area and to see the community come out and support things like our mural. That never gets old.” Anyone hoping to avoid traffic on event day will want to take advantage of the four free trolleys running continuously every half hour throughout the day, from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eventgoers can park their cars at two outer parking lots (Robb Field and The Sunrunner lot at Pacific Coast Highway and SeaWorld Drive) and shuttle directly to the street fair. The dropoff is right at Artists Alley. Meanwhile, those heading to the street fair on their bicycles will find a valet service in front of Winston’s on Bacon Street courtesy of Clif Bar and the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition.
