Christmas in the Surf and Sand Greetings from the La Jolla Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival Volunteers

Welcome to the 56th annual La Jolla Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival, “Christmas in the Surf and Sand” — the first one sponsored by the newly formed nonprofit La Jolla Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival Foundation. On Sunday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m., the parade route begins at Girard and Kline, travels down Girard to Prospect Street, then turns left to finish at the La Jolla Recreational Center. with the Holiday Festival begins with the Antique Aircraft Association performing its traditional flyover of the Village and parade route. We have more than 90 entrants with dozens of floats, bands, marching units, equestrians, and unique and vintage vehicles. Abdullah the camel, fire engines and an antique police paddy wagon will add to the fun. In honor of their 50th year, we have selected the WindanSea Surf Club and their local champions as the grand marshals to lead the parade. Keeping with our tradition of honoring individuals who have made major contributions to the community, this year we honor Claudia

and Bill Allen (traditional marshals), Sherry Ahern (philantrophic marshal), Tyler Orion (innovation marshal) and the Mt. Soledad Memorial Association, represented by Bruce Bailey. Students selected from local schools for their exceptional service to the community will join the parade as youth marshals. It is a great day to spend in the Village watching the parade assemble and travel down Girard and Prospect, and enjoying the Holiday Festival afterwrd. This year’s festival will feature entertainment, air jumps, games and educational activities for the kids, and as a special treat, photos with Santa, made possible by Sunrise Rotary. The festivities will finish with a Christmas tree lighting ceremony, featuring the large tree at the La Jolla Recreation center, which was planted years ago and continues to be decorated each year, courtesy of GDC Construction. As you enjoy your day in La Jolla, avoid ‘Mall Mania’ and shop and dine with our local merchants, who will all be open to serve you. Shopping, dining and lounging is made easy with lots of parking available so everyone can enjoy our seaside jewel. Check the parade website (ljparade.com) for current information about the parade, including maps, parking, street closures, and parade day schedule with links to our sponsors and donors who make the parade possible. A list of participants in the parade is also on the website, so check it to find people you know and then come out and have some fun watching them travel the parade route! Special thanks go to the Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival Committee, a very small group of dedicated and cheerful volunteers. It has been a privilege to work with for them over the past 16 years, and some have been volunteering for more than 25 or 30 years! The Christmas

Parade and Holiday Festival would not be possible without their many efforts, from helping raise funds to making sure all entrants have a fun and safe experience. A special thanks to Pat Wells, who is the hub of the parade, cheerfully working the spectrum of tasks and keeping us all informed. It has been a privilege to work with the committee that is dedicated to makinge the 2013 Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival the best ever! Members traveled to the South Pacific and Australia to compete in contests and star in surf films of the day.

It was surf competition in the early 1960s that gave birth to the Windansea Surf Club, as the growth of surfing spawned contests to compare skills up and down the California Coast. One of the biggest surf events in California at the time was the Surf Club Competition at Malibu Surfrider Beach. In 1963, Chuck Hasley, who had moved to San Diego and opened a surf shop in Pacific Beach for Hobie Alter, was talking to Skip Frye, Mike Hynson and Billy Caste about the upcoming Malibu contest, and they decided to recruit a team to surf under the Windansea banner. Although they only had a loose connection to the previous club, Chuck guessed correctly that some of the L.A. surfers would remember the past luaus and figure that they were an established surf club. Then the club gathered a team of surfers consisting of Joey

Cabell, Robert and Ramón Patterson, Dave Willingham, I.J. Richards, Skip Frye, Mike Hynson, Del Cannon, Chuck Hasley, Butch Van Artsdalen and Rusty Miller and piled into a rented bus in Pacific Beach and arrived at Malibu to dominate the contest. After that, word of mouth spread quickly, and the club kept recruiting the most talented surfers on the West Coast, adding to the club roster the names of Miki Dora, Mike Doyle, Phil Edwards, Donald Takayama, Mickey Munoz, David Nuuhiwa, Corky Carroll and young women surfers like Linda Benson, Margo Godfrey-Oberg and Debbie Beacham. In 1965, under the guidance of executive director Thor Svenson, the club was incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with the stated goals of “promoting the sport of surfing and the positive image of surfers as

Tyler rejoined CONNECT after the untimely passing of Duane Roth, CONNECT's CEO, having retired in 2006 as chief operating officer. Claudia & Willis Allen Jr. Claudia and Bill Allen, owners of the Crystal Pier Hotel and Cottages in Pacific Beach, are successful and passionate business and community leaders. Claudia, a noted interior designer, is a member of the National Board Smithsonian Institution Alumni. She has also served on several other local nonprofit boards, including the San Diego History Museum (San Diego Historical Society). Bill is the president of Allen Airways Flying Museum and is responsible for the antique planes that fly over the La Jolla Christmas Parade every year. Bill has served and currently serves on numerous nonprofit boards throughout the United States, including the San Diego Air and Space Museum's Foundation and Pemarro, a non-medical detox facility in Ramona, Calif. He is the past president of La Jolla Youth, and former coach for Willis Allen soccer team. A La Jolla native, Bill is passionate about keeping San Diego’s “Crown Jewel” litter free as well as controlling speeding traffic in the community. He is also an advocate for keeping the La Jolla Christmas Parade a community tradition.

La Jolla Christmas Parade Program Philanthropic Marshal Sherry Berman Ahern Sherry Ahern was born in Detroit, Michigan and moved with her family to San Diego in 1960. From her earliest years, she motivated and inspired others to give back to the community. When she was 10, she enlisted her friends to put on shows at the Hebrew Home for the Aged, where her grandmother, Alice, was a resident. She attended San Diego State University, majoring in political science. Sherry met her husband, Kevin, in La Jolla in 1985, where they have lived and brought up their two children, Brianna and Brendan. Sherry has dedicated her life to giving back. She was a full-time volunteer for the Helen Woodward Animal Center for 10 years. With her foundation she created The Fling, their yearly gala, where she became the head of underwriting. This gala has raised millions of dollars and continues to succeed. Sherry joined the Board of Friends of La Jolla Elementary School 22 years ago. The Board is the nonprofit foundation of La Jolla Elementary School, where her children were students. She has been involved in many fundraising events for the school but, most notably, founded the La Jolla Open Aire Farmer’s Market in 1998 the year both of her children left for middle school. The market continues to be a staple in the community. It has grown to be the largest farmer’s market in San Diego County, with over 200 vendors, and has raised over $2 million to help fund much needed programs at the school. Sherry was honored with the 10 Leadership Award in 1999 after starting the Market. Unfortunately, in 2000, Sherry’s son, Brendan, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. In proper Sherry fashion, she and her husband didn’t waste any time getting involved in the diabetes community and finding out how they could help. Later that year, she joined the development board of the Whittier Institute for Diabetes. For 10 years, she was the auction chair for their annual fundraiser. Working with her husband, who served on the Board of Trustees, Sherry helped to raise money for research towards the cure of Type 1 diabetes. She and her husband continue their efforts to find a cure; they are currently on the founding board of the DRC, Diabetes Research Connection. In 2001, Sherry was elected as a trustee to the La Jolla Town Council, where she served the community for three years. She and her husband also helped raise funds for Francis Parker School, where their son attended middle and high school. In 2008 she joined the founding board of the La Jolla Community

Center and helped create the first adult community center in the area. Also in 2009, Sherry founded the La Jolla Art & Wine Festival, a juried art show in downtown La Jolla with all proceeds going to four local public schools- La Jolla Elementary, Bird Rock Elementary, Torrey Pines Elementary, and Muirlands Middle School. From the beginning it was a great success and each year has grown. It is now partnered with the La Jolla Village Merchant’s Association and takes place throughout the streets of the Village. Sherry has also helped raise money for Southern Methodist University, from which both of her children graduated. With her dedication to her family and her community, it is no surprise that in April 2012 Sherry was honored with City of Hope’s Mother of the Year Award. In April 2013 Sherry received the Woman of dedication award from the Salvation Army, and in May 2013 received volunteer of the year from The La Jolla Kiwanis group. Her energy and passion for helping others is an inspiration to all of us. Her enthusiasm is only matched by her incredible energy. No one who meets her fails to comment on her ability to keep going and accomplish enormously difficult tasks. Everyone is proud of the work she has done in her life. We have much to look forward to with Sherry Ahern confidently taking on her next big project!

Military Marshal Col. Bruce S. Bailey, USAFR (Ret) Bruce Bailey is the current president/CEO of the Mount Soledad Memorial Association, the organization that maintains the Mount Soledad National Veterans Memorial. While serving in the Air Force Reserve, he rose to the rank of Colonel and was active in the office of the Judge Advocate General serving in various military legal offices in the U.S and abroad. Mr. Bailey is a member of the California and Ohio Bar Associations. His most recent position has been with the office of the San Diego City Attorney where he was Deputy City Attorney representing the city in the Wildfire Case of 2007. Prior to this, he was in private practice as an attorney for over 40 years. In addition to his activities with the Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial, Mr. Bailey previously volunteered his time to help disabled children at Children’s Hospital.

Youth Marshals Rachelle Roberson All Hallows Academy Rachelle Roberson is a first-grade student at All Hallows Academy in La Jolla. Rachelle

loves her teachers and friends at All Hallows, where her favorite subject is reading. She participates on the school cross country, soccer and track teams. An animal lover, especially of horses, Rachelle enjoys taking equestrian lessons at Benridge Farms Riding School. She plans to be a veterinarian someday. Rachelle also loves spending time at the beach, and has been surfing since she was 4 years old. A born performer, Rachelle loves to sing and dance, and will be performing in City Ballet’s Nutcracker this Christmas Season at Spreckles Theater. Whether she’s dancing, running, surfing, or just hanging out with her All Hallows pals, Rachelle’s energy and enthusiasm always shine through. She is very excited and honored to represent her school in the La Jolla Christmas Parade. Her parents, Kevin and Gigi Roberson, and her big sister Brianna are so very proud of her.

Andrew Petruzelli & Mahine Guilpain San Diego French American School

Mahine Guilpain and Andrew Petruzelli were chosen as the youth marshals from San Diego French-American School, as the two students are fine representatives of the school’s population. These eighth-grade students are both strong academic achievers and are active participants in sports and volunteer activities at school. Andrew has been at San Diego FrenchAmerican School for 12 years and is, of course, bilingual and is quite good at speaking Spanish as well. In his spare time, he loves to play the guitar, build robots out of Legos and play soccer. Mahine’s a native speaker of both French and English and participates in sports and the arts. She enjoys creative writing and photography and also loves boogie boarding on the weekends. She is on the school volleyball and soccer teams. Andrew and Mahine were recently elected as the eighth-grade class representatives and

serve on the school council, representing the students of the middle school and communicating on their behalf.

Rose Conlin Stella Maris Academy Rose Conlin, a seventh-grader at Stella Maris Academy, has been unanimously nominated as the school representative for one of the 2013-14 Youth Marshals in this year’s annual La Jolla Christmas Parade. Elected to the Student Council for two consecutive years, Rose served as council secretary in the sixth grade and now currently serves as treasurer in the sevent grade. Additionally, Rose participates in Shaolin Kempo, as a Third Degree Brown Belt, as well as in Glee Club, choir, volleyball and soccer, while excelling in all the academic subject areas. Rose consistently maintains a grade point average that secures, for her, a placement on the honor roll and Principal’s List each quarter. As early as the end of third grade, Rose began displaying acts of service to both her school and parish church by becoming an altar server. Presently, Rose assists younger students in a weekly Reading Program and helps SMA fathers at the monthly Dad’s Club Pancake Breakfast. In addition, Rose plans to lend a hand in building the float for this year’s entry in the Christmas Parade along with assisting the office staff at Mary, Star of the Sea Church in completing any task that needs to be done. Rose is especially proud of her role in welcoming World War ll veterans on numerous returning Honor Flights from Washington, D.C. There, at Lindbergh Field, Rose assists veterans in wheelchairs and distributes welcome mementos to the former servicemen. Admired by her teachers and peers, alike, Rose has been described as a loyal friend to her classmates and an excellent student to her teachers. Rose best describes herself as very patient. “I have an older and younger sister,” she explains. According to Rose, her parents would acknowledge her good memory and fine sense of responsibility as two of her best character traits. Rose continually sets high goals for herself. Currently, she aspires to become a pediatrician someday because, according to Rose, “I love little kids!”

GDC CONSTRUCTION and president Pancho Dewhurst have been donating their time and equipment to decorate the La Jolla Christmas tree at the La Jolla Rec Center for the past 10 years. Pancho’s father George Dewhurst planted the tree in 1984 when he founded the La Jolla Sunrise Rotary Club. As president of the La Jolla Sunrise Rotary Club, George Dewhurst’s first community project was to plant the La Jolla Christmas tree and decorate it annually. As chairman of the parade, George came up with the idea of ending the parade at the La Jolla Recreation Center for a Christmas party and lighting ceremony. George's father, Walter Dewhurst, started the parade in 1950s. George and Pancho have both been the chairs and co-chairs over the years.

ABOUT THE COVER PHOTO: The La Jolla coastline has always been an inspirational focal point for me with my photography. I remember as a little boy going to Windansea and playing by the shack in the early ’70s. I have always been drawn back to this beautiful beach to capture images and specially the Windansea Shack. The Shack is near and dear to the whole community and represents decades of stories. Catch live music at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters and Prodigy School of the Arts, or stop and listen to musicians play along the boulevard. Merchants along the 5500, 5600 and 5700 blocks of La Jolla Boulevard will offer specials, samples and displays. Bird Rock Community Council members can show their membership card for extra savings. This place is fantastic! My fiance went here to buy a tux for himself and to look for rentals for our upcoming wedding. At first we didn’t want to go here because we figured, being in Birdrock, it would be more on the expensive side. After a terrible experience at another tuxedo shop, we decided to give A Better Deal a try. I am SO happy we did! Not only was the experience far better than where we had been, but the quality of tuxedos are fantastic, and they ended up being cheaper for his groomsmen to rent! Score! We also had a hiccup and had to push back the wedding after we went in for our first appointment. When I called to explain, they were so accomodating and even let us come back to try on different tuxes months later even though we had already purchased a tux and it had come in.
