Controlled substances Natural High is called the program of choice as school year is slated to begin By SANDY LIPPE Students in La Jolla and University City, along with about 130,000 in the rest of San Diego Unified School District, will hit the bricks running on the first day of school, Tuesday, Sept. 8. La Jolla and UC kids will probably have new notebooks and iPads, new clothes and shoes and new opportunities and challenges in academics and social life. One current challenge for kids involves choosing natural highs instead of drugs, which create a false reality. What's a parent to do? Valerie Rock, a clinical psychologist and parent of two
La Jolla Elementary School students, is impressed with a program called Natural High. "The more I learned,” she said, “the more I loved it. Former nurse ordered to complete drug program amid painkiller scheme A federal judge on Aug. 21 ordered a former nurse at the La Jolla Women’s Surgery Center to complete a six-month residential drug treatment program after she pleaded guilty to siphoning off a painkiller used to treat patients. Sarah Elizabeth Martin, 25, of San Diego, was also ordered to perform 100 hours of community service under terms of three years' probation granted by U.S. District Court Judge Janis Sammartino. Martin, who according to court records checked into the drug program on June 15, is continuing with that program. She was fined $1,100, and no jail time was ordered. She was ordered to pay $270.29, which represents the amount of the drug that was taken. Martin worked at the clinic, at 9850 Genesee Ave., from October of 2014 to March 24, 2015 as a registered nurse. Part of her responsibilities involved administering a generic drug for Demerol to patients, but she took some of the drug and replaced it with a saline solution. Demerol is a narcotic used to treat moderate to severe pain. Assistant U.S. Attorney Melanie Pierson said that there was no evidence any patient was harmed from receiving the diluted painkiller. It was estimated that the adulterated drug
was administered to between 50 and 250 patients. Martin’s attorney, Dana Grimes, wrote in court documents that Martin suffers from fibromyalgia, a difficult ailment involving fatigue. Grimes wrote that Martin began the drug siphoning in January after her fourth week of daily migraines. Grimes wrote that Martin had a long history of illness and pain, starting with gastroesophageal reflux while in the fifth grade. Martin could have received a maximum sentence of three years in federal prison. She pleaded guilty on May 28 to adulteration of a drug held for sale. Both sides agreed Martin should receive the six-month drug treatment program as a sentence instead of jail. Martin admitted she removed the drug from vials with a syringe, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. She glued the caps back on the vials with the intent to mislead others that the vials had not been touched. The Food and Drug Administration investigated the case. – Neal Putnam
Man arrested in SWAT standoff in University City A man who allegedly held his family hostage at gunpoint in an apartment in University City was arrested August 20 following a standoff with San Diego police that lasted more than three and a half hours, authorities said. The standoff at the La Jolla Crossroads apartment complex, in the 9100 block of Judicial Drive near University Town Center mall, began shortly after 7 p.m. August 20, according to San Diego police. The man’s daughter called police to report that a fight between her father and mother had escalated. She said her father was armed and holding her mother and brother
hostage. SWAT officers and hostage negotiators went to the complex, and police evacuated several nearby apartments and kept other residents from returning to their units. Negotiators tried to call the apartment, but the calls went
unanswered. Eventually, they made contact with the man and persuaded him to surrender. He came out of the apartment peacefully and surrendered at about 10:40 p.m., San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said. The man’s name was not immediately released. He was booked into jail on suspicion of domestic violence. Police searched the apartment, but it was not immediately known if they found any weapons. – FOX 5
July county urban water use drops 32 percent Urban potable water use in San Diego County fell by approximately 32 percent in July compared with that in July of 2013, according to preliminary numbers released by the San Diego County Water Authority. That follows a decrease of 26 percent in June compared to June of 2013 and a 30 percent decline in May. “Potable” is a term generally interchangeable with “drinkable.” July was the second month in which the State Water Resources

Local Business Rare restitution hearing is scheduled Sept. 25 in Schroeder Piano case In a rare move, a restitution hearing will be held Friday, Sept. 25 to determine the exact losses and value of 16 grand pianos that were sold by Peter Schroeder on consignment during the years his piano shop was opened in La Jolla. Schroeder, of Pacific Beach, is charged with 18 counts of grand theft, elder theft and fraudulent appropriation as the longtime owner of Schroeder Piano Company, which was located at 5680 La Jolla Blvd. before it closed in February. Deputy District Attorney Paul Greenwood said a judge will be assigned to conduct a hearing with appraisers and piano professionals who will use documents, photographs and other information about the instruments' values. A determination of the exact loss must be made before a guilty plea can be entered because Schroeder, 75, would be required to pay restitution at a sentencing. But since both sides disagree about the total loss, San Diego Superior Court Judge Timothy Walsh set the restitution hearing. Walsh's action took place Aug. 18. Greenwood says he has never heard of a restitution hearing being conducted before a guilty plea or a conviction is entered.
This type of hearing, he added, usually occurs either at sentencing or afterward since guilt must be established before someone can be ordered to pay for damages or theft. Greenwood said the lack of an exact figure on the total loss complicates whether Schroeder can enter a guilty plea. His attorney, Mehrdad Ghassemkhani, couldn’t be reached for comment, but during the April 23 preliminary hearing, most of his questions concerned the value of the pianos and why a witness specified the piano’s worth. Some of the witnesses testified about placing pianos with Schroeder for sale on consignment. They said the pianos often sold with little or no documentation as to how much they were sold for or who the new owner was. Some owners had died, and their relatives testified about what they knew. Some of the pianos were placed with Schroeder from 2011 to 2014. Schroeder’s trial has been set for Nov. 4, but Greenwood said he hopes it can be resolved before then. Schroeder has pleaded not guilty and remains free on his own recognizance. – Neal Putnam

Woman, 92, charged in Chamber official's auto death The City Attorney’s Office Aug. 19 charged Mary Catherine O’Neil with vehicular manslaughter in the death of Melissa Bonney Ratcliff, a mother of three who was struck and killed by O’Neil’s car as she stood on Girard Avenue in La Jolla. O’Neil, 92 and now living in a retirement home in the eastern United States, will be arraigned on the misdemeanor charge later this month. She was additionally charged with an unlawful backing movement. The fatality occurred in a busy retail district with diagonal parking on both sides of the street. At about noon, Ratcliff pulled into an open parking spot in front of a bank on the east side of Girard, left her car and walked behind it to its trunk. Meanwhile, O’Neil was backing her car out a diagonal parking space across the street in an apparent attempt to reverse its direction and drive home. O’Neil’s car struck Ratcliff, pinning her against the car next to hers and

Sundt lost two brothers to drugs years ago. “In 1988,” he explained, “my little brother Steven died of a cocaine overdose. He left behind a beautiful 5-yearold daughter and loving family. Six years later, Eric, my other younger brother, committed suicide after a decade of severe depression. Doctors said depression and his subsequent death were linked to long-term drug use that began in middle school." "Just say no to butter. It doesn't work. After speaking with education and addiction experts, we decided to start Natural High because we knew we could make a lasting change in lives of youth. “We use good science and tools of marketing. It's common sense. Show kids super kids who don't engage in drugs and alcohol. Stories by the right messengers do change lives. “Promote character development. Kids involved in meaningful activities are much more resilient and much less likely to use drugs. It could be
sports, drama, church, art." John Lee Evans, a psychologist and a San Diego Unified Board of Education member, concurs. “As a psychologist and school board member,” Evans said, “I have seen the devastation of drugs on young people's lives. Heroin use is going up in our community, but parents and kids need to be informed about the effects of all drugs, including alcohol. It's not enough to to say 'Don't do drugs.' Evans is also impressed with a particular Natural High strategy – getting celebrities to talk about alternative means to feel good. Popular skateboarder and Carlsbad native Tony Hawk came on board the program in 2004 and made a video, “Natural High 2,” with several other young athletes. Bethany Hamilton, a surfing pro and the victim of a shark attack that took her arm but not her passion for surfing, shared her story in a Natural High video. "I've seen people start with weed,” she said, “and they become like a slave to it, and you see them lose their drive in life.” Video interviews, Sundt explained, are paired with worksheets and discussion guides for educators to spark
meaningful conversations with students about goals, values, role models and support networks and natural highs – meanwhile, he said, age is no respecter of persons. During an address to a La Jolla sixth-grade class, he explained, one mother expressed surprise at Sundt lecturing to students so young. Sundt told the class that he knew they were too smart to do drugs, but he asked them if they knew someone close who does drugs or uses alcohol. Eighty percent of the kids' hands reportedly shot up. Sundt's response was 15 seconds of silent eye contact with the mom. "Our overarching message,” Sundt said, “is that life is great. While we are not a magic bullet, you can be cool and never do drugs. You can have something that makes you special.” On Saturday, Sept. 12, Hawk, Natural High's celebrity ambassador for 2015, will appear at a Natural High fundraiser program at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad. August is National Vaccination Month, and public health officials are using that to remind people about the importance of vaccination. “Vaccines are the most effective tools there are to prevent children from getting sick,” San Diego County public health officer Wilma Wooten said. “When children are not vaccinated, not only are they at increased risk for disease, they can also spread illness to others in classrooms, house-
holds and communities.” Currently, there is a movement against vaccination based on a study that linked vaccines to a rise in autism in children. The cause gained prominence through high-profile supporters such as celebrity Jenny McCarthy. Starting in June of 2016, however, California parents will no longer be able to use personal belief to exempt their children from vaccination. This past June, Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law a Senate bill eliminating personal belief exemptions. The
bill allows only medical reasons for exemptions. For children 4 to 6 years of age, health officials recommend getting shots for diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, chicken pox, measles, mumps, rubella and polio. Older children need a booster shot for diphheria. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends teenagers get vaccinated against human papilloma virus. Vaccination is not just for younger students; those entering college need
to get vaccinated as well. The centers recommend college freshmen get vaccinated against Meningococcal meningitis. Freshmen are seven times more likely to contract Meningococcal meningitis than the general population, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association. St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center presented the 38th Haute with Heart on Aug. 15 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront in honor of the memory of longtime La Jollan Sally B. Thornton, who died at 81 last June. A moment of silence was held during the event, and an award from St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center was presented to Sally's husband John recognizing the Thorntons' support over the years. Compliments of Assemblyman Brian Jones, an American flag was recently flown over the state capitol in memory of Sally’s philanthropic accomplishments. Additionally, April 12, 2014 was proclaimed Sally B. Thornton Day. Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Councilmember Scott Sherman and City Council presented this prestigious honor. Sally was truly an extraordinary person, and we were fortunate to have had her. The featured artist at Haute with

The crowd loved the students' terrific performance of a scene from the musical “Shrek.” The show was presented by Leonard Simpson, whose creative works are know internationally. Fashion Forward, his fashion production company, has produced shows in L.A., New York, London and Paris. The models came down the opening segment in keeping with the theme, wearing colorful wigs and polka dots. My favorite was a long red skirt with a painting of Lucille Ball on the back, a silk couture gown hand painted by artist Debbie Solan that took six months to create. Some of the standouts on the catwalk were stylish fashions from Macy’s over the top creations from Jaqueline Banting and eclectic clothing from Satori Designs. St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center serves 400 adults with developmental disabilities such as autism, Down syndrome and cerebral
palsy. The center provides many diverse programs, such as culinary training, organic gardening, music, dance, a terrific arts program and, of course, the noted aquatics program. At the Old Globe Theatre Monday, Aug. 17, donors and patrons enjoyed “Craig100,” a celebration of founding director Craig Noel’s 100th birthday. Noel died five years ago at the age of 94. The script and slideshow, directed by Richard Seer, was extremely well written and featured Globe associate artists, including beloved actors Kandis Chappell, George DelHoyo, Deborah May, Jonathan McMurtry and Deborah Taylor; other actors from the Globe and from the Old Globe/USD master’s program; and youth from the recent San Diego Junior Theatre production of “All Shook Up.” Junior Theatre was founded at Noel’s suggestion in 1948. The first-time Taste of Old Town event, presented by Tequila Herradura last year, will return to the streets of Old Town San Diego on Thursday, Sept.10, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Event chairperson Chuck Ross of Old Town Family Hospitality Corp., the Cosmopolitan Hotel and Fiesta de Reyes said the inaugural event surpassed all expectations last fall and 13 restaurants in Old Town have begun the planning for the second-annual Taste of Old Town. “Nearly 1,000 San Diegans

Addressing parking and environmental concerns at a public viewpoint on Coast Walk off Torrey Pines Road, La Jolla Parks and Beaches, Inc. Aug. 24 tabled the issue to allow more time to create a subcommittee and allow neighbors to weigh in on the legally complicated situation. The group’s agenda item requested resending a letter to the city asking for studies to be done on erosion, bluff stability and parking on Coast Walk, a popular dead-end public viewpoint off Torrey Pines Road. La Jolla attorney Karl ZoBell, a former resident on Coast Walk, turned out to rebut previous comments suggesting he was responsible for physical changes that have resulted in the removal of a couple viewpoint parking spaces. ZoBell said all changes were made by the city, adding that longstanding public right-of-way and other legal issues remain unresolved in that area. ZoBell warned that, if the group continues to pursue a suggestion that changes be made to increase parking at the viewpoint, “That would be opening a door that shouldn’t be opened. I suggest public participation to discuss this.” “All we’re asking is to resend a letter supporting that (environmental) studies be done,” said board member Melinda Merryweather. A couple of Coast Walk neighbors noted not everyone residing nearby was aware that the issue of onsite parking had resurfaced or that environmental studies were being reconsidered. They said the issue needed to be vetted further. Board chair Dan Allen then suggested that the group form a subcommittee to meet again with neighbors to discuss the issues involved before revoting on whether or not to resend the letter.

The 13,000-square-foot restaurant, designed by La Jollabased Marengo Morton Architects and Costa Mesa's Hatch Design Group, will feature two dining areas, the main level with a seating capacity of 200 and a second level as 120 seats. Both floors will offer outdoor dining and views of La Jolla Cove. The name reflects on Duke Kahanamoku, six-time Olympic swimming and water polo medalist and widely credited with popularizing modern surfing. Kahanamoku died in 1968. The menus will celebrate the cultures and cooking techniques of Hawaii and California. The items will feature a respect for traditions and a focus on all-natural ingredients and seasonal, locally sourced products. Signature items will include Tahitian octopus, cooked on a wood grill with smoked papaya, cucumber, lime and coconut milk; charred snap peas, with burned pineapple vinaigrette and brie; lilikoi ceviche, with coriander stem, tomato, avocado and Fresno chili; roasted firecracker fish, with Suzie’s Farm cabbage, gailan and ginger sprouts; and 24hour Kalbi short rib, served with housemade kimchee, smoked potato salad and Kewpie yogurt. Re-energized Café Solange rings in the new Café Solange, like the rest of La Jolla Shores, is back in business and reinvigorated now that infrastructure work that had the business district torn up is now complete and in the rearview. “We were just opened weekends during construction,” said restaurant owner Christian Malecot, noting the eatery’s name will remain the same though its menu is being tweaked. Malecot noted he’s actively soliciting neighborhood input on the updating of the restaurant, whose French name translates to “sun angel.” “We wanted to let people know we’re still here, that we’re opening for dinner and that we’re serious about it,” said Malecot, adding that ownership “might transition into a dinner place” if all goes well. “I think we can bring — and add — something new to the neighborhood,” Malecot said. Malecot described his eatery’s revamped menu as “simple,” adding it features coastal cuisine with French cooking techniques. Malecot assumed control of the restaurant, which offers courtyard dining, in 2012 before rebranding and changing its name to Café Solange in April of 2013. Thus far, Malecot said, business this summer has been somewhat slower than in the recent past, though he couldn’t say whether

that was due to exceptionally humid weather or the long layover from construction. A massive infrastructure project impeded the neighborhood's business traffic considerably from September of 2014 to May of this year. In any event, Malecot noted now is definitely a busy time of year as Café Solange is catering to its local regulars and serving the usual host of visiting summertime tourists.
“Recovering from being closed is tougher than I expected,” Malecot said. He added some positives came out of construction, such as Shores merchants “working together to keep things going,” which he said was “awesome.” Café Solange sells beer and wine, showcasing French varieties. Seating capacity of the restaurant is about 70, inside and on the patio, Malecot said.
Pointing out seafood dishes are a staple at Café Solange, Malecot noted the revamped menu includes about 10 dishes, including leg of lamb, New York steak, chicken breast, shrimp scampi, grilled salmon and a butternut squash with Portobello mushrooms as a vegetarian choice. “Nothing in here is more than $20 a dish,” said Malecot. “It’s going to be nice for people to come and have a sit-down dinner.”

Healthy Lifestyles Russian Enclave in Beverly Hills Doing it Better By Natasha Josefowitz, Ph.D. It is interesting that while living in Paris, my parents resisted any French influence and continued their Russian way of life: eating Russian food, reading Russian newspapers and books, having Russian friends and speaking Russian at home (my first tongue was Russian). In the U.S., they did the same thing — continued the Russian traditions they had grown up with. While my brother and I were eager to become more American, our parents wanted us to stay traditional. That meant we children were to have good manners: be polite, quiet, not speak until spoken to, stand up when an adult walked into the room, bring chairs up, offer food and recite Russian poetry to entertain guests. I was also often asked to exhibit Russian dances at parties. Slowly, my family started meeting other Russian immigrants, and

The thing is, in years past everyone knew some older person who was a bit ‘senile’ but now it seems hardly a day goes by without hearing of a friend, family member or some famous person with Dementia. from the high of performing. We played charades, and finally, at around 3 a.m., my mother would send him and his wife Nela home. Frances and Jascha Heifetz became weekly regulars at our house. Jascha always ordered ahead of time what he wanted on the menu. They had a beach house in Santa Monica, and we used to go there weekends and play Ping Pong, his favorite game. He was a strange man, liking to play jokes; for instance, he had some pants made with one navy leg and one black leg to see if anyone noticed and said anything. I once said to him after a concert, “You played like a god.” And he said, “Where did you last hear God play?” I am still in touch with their son Jay Heifetz, a photographer in Australia. Gregor Piatigorsky, known as Grisha, was married to Jacqueline de Rothschild, who became an accomplished tennis and chess player, author, sculptor, philanthropist and arts patron. When her mother, the baroness Germaine de Rothschild, came to visit, she often went out to lunch with

Can it really be that simple? Yes, ‘but’ other key contributors are smoking and being obese, so it really is a combination of lifestyle factors but clearly the most important consideration is getting some exercise! Your thoughts? Parks group puts Concours officials in the driver's seat In August, La Jolla Parks and Beaches, Inc. agreed after a lengthy discussion to allow all of Ellen Brown Scripps Park to be used for the 12th annual Concours d’Elegance classic car show in April of 2016. The parks and beaches advisory group has a longstanding policy of asking promoters to leave at least a portion of the park open to the public, even during special events. Michael Dorvillier and public relations representative Laurel McFarlane briefed the panel on plans to host the classic car exhibit April 9 and 10 on Scripps Park lawn. Dorvillier noted the event continues to grow in international stature. McFarlane pointed out the event is the biggest fundraiser of the year
for La Jolla Historical Society. “Will you ever consider leaving some section of Scripps Park open for public use?” asked board member Melinda Merryweather. “All of the lawn area of the park is needed to host the event,” replied Dorvillier. “Have you thought of moving this event somewhere else?” responded Merryweather. “Having it close to the Village is important, which is why we do it where we do it,” answered Dorvillier, who added 10 percent of event proceeds benefit downtown San Diego’s Monarch School for homeless students. Board member Bill Robbins noted that problems with setbacks, trash pickup and accountability with event organizers have been ongoing.

City's financial health remarkably better over past decade, performance audit says The City of San Diego’s financial health has shown “remarkable improvement” over the past decade due to fiscal reforms and now ranks among the best when compared with other cities with similar populations, according to a performance audit by independent city auditor Eduardo Luna. “The city’s financial health is strong and getting stronger because of the fiscal reforms enacted by city leaders and approved by San Diego voters in recent years,” said Mayor Kevin Faulconer. “By tackling tough issues that were too long ignored, we are now able to invest in our neighborhoods, expand city services, hire more
police officers and pave more roads like never before. The city must remain faithful to the fiscal reforms and best practices in order for its financial health to remain strong... .” “Our results suggest that the city is in a strong position to finance its services on a continuing basis and poised to meet the demands of natural growth, decline and change,” the audit said. “These results are a testament to the efforts made by city leaders over the last 10 years, including implementation of strong fiscal policies, practices and controls that helped the city overcome a point of crisis.” A decade ago, the city was on the
brink of bankruptcy following a pension crisis and decades of alleged financial mismanagement by past city leaders. Rating agencies had suspended the city’s credit rating, and the Securities and Exchange Commission ruled the city had defrauded investors. In response, leaders enacted several financial fixes to boost reserves, reform retiree health care and restore the city’s credit rating. Voters also overwhelmingly approved a switch to a strong mayor form of government and a pension initiative that reduced the city’s future pension obligations by nearly $1 billion.
In compiling its report, the auditor’s office used a nationally recognized 10-point test designed to assess performance in financial position, revenues, debt and capital assets. The audit then compared San Diego’s condition to similar-size cities – Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Antonio, Dallas, San Jose and Austin – from fiscal years 2005 to 2014. San Diego ranked among the best when compared with the other cities for eight of the last 10 years. San Diego also scored significantly higher in fiscal years 2012 through 2014, at least doubling the score of the next highest city in each year.

One evening, Prince Vladimir Rachevsky, another regular, said that if our glasses were real Baccarat, they would not break if thrown in the pool. So everyone drank toasts and threw them in the pool. They were real, and he was wrong. The next morning, my mother’s complete set of longstemmed champagne glasses was lying in pieces at the bottom. After the war ended, Russian musicians would come to the United States on concert tours. Pianists Sviatoslav Richter and Emil Gilels were frequent visitors, bringing with them bowls of fresh caviar, which my mother served with small pancakes and sour cream. I can still sing the popular Russian songs of that generation and did so, surprising the Russian conductor Valery Gergiev when he came here a couple of years ago to conduct our San Diego Symphony as guest conductor.

Japanese eggplant means little muss and fuss In late May, I purchased several 4-inch pots of tiny Japanese eggplant plants for my gardener Jeff to grow in his vegetable garden. And much to our delight, we have been enjoying a bumper crop of these tasty, long and slender eggplants. The variety of Japanese eggplant I choose was Ichiban, which grows on 3to 4-foot-tall plants. Unlike the more familiar "globe" variety of eggplant, the Japanese eggplant has a thin skin and very few seeds, which makes it less bitter than its Mediterranean relatives. There is no need to peel Japanese eggplants, and when cooked, they have a sweet, delicate flavor, especially when grilled. Eating the eggplants skin is very good for you because it is filled with nasunin, a powerful antioxidant with many health properties that will keep your brain, heart and cardiovascular system healthy. Jeff told me that these eggplants are easy to grow, love the hot days of summer and will produce their fruit well into the fall. The plants take about two to three months to mature in well-drained soil, either in your garden or in containers. They do need a steady supply of water, and if they do not receive enough, they will be small and bitter. Stake the plants or use tomato cages to support them as they produce their fruit. Plants should be fed about once a month during

the growing season with an organic fertilizer, such as Dr. Earth's Vegetable and Herb Fertilizer. You can also give them some fish emulsion in between, which will help them produce more fruit and keep them healthy. In their early growth stage, pinch back some of the growth, which will make the eggplant bushier and have more branches to produce fruit. Harvest the eggplants with pruning shears when their skin is shiny and glossy and they are about 8 to 10 inches long. If they are dull, or if you see dark seeds after you cut them
open, it is a sign they may be bitter. Even though they are Asian in origin, these tasty eggplants still have an affinity for Mediterranean recipes. Grill or roast them to use in pasta or eggplant spreads, such as caponata. Grill until the veggies are crisp tender, a few minutes on each side (onions will take longer). Remove the veggies from the grill, cut into bite-size pieces and toss them a little vinaigrette, salt, pepper and the basil. Toss the spinach or arugula with a light coating of vinaigrette and serve the veggies on top of the greens. Garnish with a few sprigs of fresh basil. May be served chilled or at room temperature.

for at least 12 years, when I moved to San Diego from Ventura. It's a cinch it was an altogether rare event, but its uncommonness made me (and presumably a lot of others) long for every minute of it, just as we typically pine for the area's legendary weather. The air! It was actually – well – sweet, as in free of the Cove's fabled poop fumes from you-know-what! Totally free! I choked on my own amazement as I drove up and down Coast Boulevard, breathing in the splendor the way Joey Chestnut skarfs hot dogs. This was not La Jolla Cove – this was a breezy interplanetary paradise, bedecked with natives of all persuasions who'd never heard of sea lions, much less experienced the pleasure of their all-out olfactory press. Where was I? And could I stay? One guy at the eatery said the Cove's sea lion count is down this summer, at least to the naked eye. If he's right, that could account for a lot. Sea lions are loopy for anchovies, one of their major delicacies; the enzymes from both join forces in a stinkfest the size of which led to a 2013 lawsuit that cited the City as liable for the aftereffects of the smell. The City won, with Superior Court Judge Tim Taylor ruling earlier this year that it has no duty to control the ill-effects from sea lions and birds, notably cormorants. Fewer sea lions means fewer sources of poo; add last week's cooler weather, and things returned to a semblance of what's supposed to be normal beach life. But these moments are quite few and far between; otherwise, the need for court action and the area merchants' wholesale hues and cries wouldn't necessarily have materialized. Unless the sea lions have learned to clean up after themselves, there's every probability that the smell will return; I just happened to have hit the surface air stream and moderating temps at exactly the right moment (better yet, for at least 90 minutes, the length of my lunch). My companion, who just moved to Encinitas from the East Coast, was unaware of the dilemma out here – she jokingly suggested that we import a make-believe species of shark to dispatch the meddlesome mammals. In a perfect world, that might be a viable solution – but the world isn't perfect, and for all we know, the raging smell may well repel the few sharks that do reside in the Cove. Meanwhile, until my next trip to Effluvium Row, I'll thoroughly warm to the memory of this uncanny and welcome moment. La Jolla Cove without the odor? And the Houston Astros lead their division? Must be the ether.
