Annual festival sees 27th installment at UCSD’s Warren Field Artists and art lovers will descend on UCSD’s Warren Field once again for the 27th annual La Jolla Festival of the Arts on June 22 and 23. Bringing together 200 artists, entertainment, wine, beer, food and live performance art, the festival, produced by the Torrey Pines Kiwanis Club, runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Among the area artists featured will be: • Husband-and-wife team Jeremy and Gabriela Firehammer, who cut and polish each stone by hand before inlaying them in stainless steel, creating geometric sculptures and wall hangings • Escondido-based impressionist Robert Ferguson,
whose landscapes are drawn exclusively from plein-air studies in Europe and the Western U.S. • Electrical engineer-turned-photographer Dave Ness, who takes photographs of landscapes, wildlife and unique abstracts • Local sculptor Amos Robinson, who transforms sheets of solid steel into fluid shapes to create graceful sculptures and mobiles

Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) received a donation of titanic proportions on May 31 when filmmaker and ocean explorer James Cameron bestowed upon the institution a key piece of oceanographic exploration equipment, along with $25,000. The “Titanic” and “Avatar” director, who last year completed the first solo dive to Challenger Deep, the world’s deepest point in the Mariana Trench, was the 2013 recipient of SIO’s Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest. He accepted the prize at a ceremony and lecture at UCSD on May 31, only to turn around and donate the $25,000 prize money to the institution, along with a “lander” system, an extremedepth exploration device Cameron used during his record-breaking descent. In a discussion in SIO’s “Lander Lab” prior to the award ceremony, Cameron talked about the important role the lander plays in gathering information about earth’s most little-known sites.
Mayor: ‘The end of the poop has arrived’ By MARIKO LAMB “This is a great day in the history of La Jolla,” said Mayor Bob Filner at a press conference at La Jolla Cove on May 28. “The end of the poop has arrived.” Blue Eagle Cleaning, an all-natural cleaning solutions company, tested a microbial cleaner on pilot plots north of the primary cormorant mess at La Jolla Cove that same day. If the test treatment proves to be effective at eliminating the bird droppings and odor that emanates from them without affecting the water or sealife, a full-scale treatment of the entire affected bluff will begin June 10. The cleaning solution is an all-natural bacteria blend that effectively eats away at the waste material. According to biological consultant Keith Merkel of Merkel &

“My part and my submarine capture public imagination, but [the lander] is the true workhorse,” said Cameron, who was featured on the June cover of National Geographic for his historic dive. “A large part is done by this vehicle in terms of getting the science done. It’s very powerful.” The lander, which was developed by Scripps engineer Kevin Hardy, includes an instrument frame, command and control spheres, empty camera spheres, buoyancy spheres, water and biological sampling systems and deck support gear. The instrument will be put to work immediately. Scripps marine microbiologist Doug Bartlett, who served as the chief scientist on Cameron’s expedition, said it may be used to collect samples of seawater, sediment, microbes and more in the Sirena Deep, one of the world’s deepest points, as early as this month. “There’s a perception we’ve explored the entire planet, but that’s just wrong,” Cameron said. “The hadal depths (the deepest zones in the ocean) start below the abyssal depths, and if you took the area of all these trenches and added it up, it’s a greater area than North America.” Asked if he was afraid to travel alone to such depths, Cameron said fear was not an option. “If you think you’re going to be afraid, you probably shouldn’t be doing it,” he said. “I had apprehension, believe me, but I was too damn busy to think about it.” National Geographic recorded Cameron’s dive in 3-D and plans to release a documentary about the excursion later this year.

Cluster documents strong support for Partnership Agreement Input from more than 1,200 teachers, parents, administrators, staff and community members via an online survey showed overwhelming support for the La Jolla Cluster Association’s (LJCA) partnership agreement, a proposed contract requesting that La Jolla’s five public schools have greater autonomy from the school district. Despite its 98 percent overall support rate, one component of the survey hit a standstill once it was brought to the attention of the San Diego Education Association
(SDEA). The item requests that each school be permitted to interview applicants for a teaching position, as opposed to the current process, which allows the five most senior teachers in the district to apply. San Diego goes global with Ambassadorial Roundtable There are many things Ina von Ber loves about San Diego. After all, she’s lived all over the world but was drawn back here, and is quick to extol the city’s virtues. There is, however, one area where San Diego, she feels, falls short: cultural diplomacy. It is this deficiency that von Ber hopes to correct with a new — or at least newly revived — vision, a series of events called the Ambassadorial Roundtable, which kicked off June 5 with the visit of Bosnia and Herzegovina ambassador Jadranka Negodic at a private home on Mount Soledad.
At the event’s first reincarnation, Negodic delivered an engaging talk to an intimate crowd, speaking on the challenges the country has faced since the 1992 war that broke up several Balkan states, as well as what the future holds for the region. The next major goal for Bosnia, Negodic said, is to join the European Union and NATO. What most of the rest of the world doesn’t understand, she said, is that the war has been over for nearly 20 years, and the country no longer resembles the war-torn images that were widely distributed around the world in the

early 1990s. “What we need to do now is focus on how to take that image of war and refugees to an image of a country with huge potential,” she said. That potential will increase, she said, if the nation manages to attract foreign investors and grow its economy. It’s that attraction that von Ber hopes her monthly events will help facilitate for countries the world over. German-born von Ber, who formerly headed the local chapter of the World Affairs Council, said she feels like San Diego, though it is forging ahead in the arts and other areas, gets lost in the mix when it comes to cultural diplomacy, overshadowed by Los Angeles and San Francisco. “When you think of San Diego, you think of Canada and Mexico and the Pacific Rim. There’s not much of a global feel. I like to say it’s the smallest largest town,” she said. “When people talk about globalization here, they’re focused on trade, but we don’t have any cultural diplomacy. But we’re not just skateboarders and biotech. We have people who are interested in culture and international affairs. We just need to put ourselves on the map.” As the head of the World Affairs Council, von Ber had the idea to help make a name for the city by bringing ambassadors from all over the world to San Diego for cultural conferences,

which she did once a month between 2005 and 2008. The biggest challenge at the time was getting foreign representatives to see San Diego as a diplomatic destination. Most of them, she said, had never been here. “I had some ambassadors say they always visit Washington, D.C. or San Francisco,” she said. “Finally they started to take more interest in going somewhere else.” Using her connections in the State Department and U.N., von Ber gath-
ered a growing list of ambassadors committed to making a local appearance. Past events have seen ambassadors from Kazakhstan, El Salvador, Estonia, Thailand, New Zealand, Spain and many more come through the city, with lectures running the gamut from political and economic considerations to cultural transformations.

Sergio De La Mora, lead Pastor of Cornerstone Church of La Jolla, was recently made aware of Yanes' story and immediately wanted to help. With a church mission that highlights "advancing the Kingdom of God to the nations abroad," De La Mora was first to step forward and offer help to a young man he had never met. "One of my primary roles as a Pastor is to empower the dreams and ambitions of youth and young adults in our community. The Philippines may not be in our immediate community, but his story is universal. If we can help Mark, we can help others as well." De La Mora explains. Mark Yanes resides in a predominantly impoverished area in the Philippines and has been fortunate enough to attend the Baptist Bible and Seminary Institute of the Philippines over the last two years. However due to his financial situation, Yanes has not been able to pay any of the educational fees incurred during the past two years. He was given a warning by school administration that his studies would be discontinued if he was unable to pay both all retro and current fees. Through a line of prayer and community advocates, the local Pastor heard of this young man's story. Not only did Pastor Sergio and Cornerstone Church of La Jolla take care of all fees from the past two years but they also paid in full the fees for the next two years for this young aspiring Pastor. Mark Yanes will now be able to continue his studies and become a Pastor whose life mission is to impact countless hearts in the remote and poor areas of the Philippines, many with stories just like Yanes. Business New store spreads good will in La Jolla Village

Goodwill Industries of San Diego (GISD) has expanded its charitable mission of helping others by opening up shop in the heart of La Jolla’s retail district on Girard Avenue. The new donation center, which opened June 1, is fully staffed and open seven days a week to accept clean, reusable clothing and household goods. The retail store is not yet open but is expected to open its doors on June 27. “The first step in the La Jolla area is very, very exciting,” said Beth Forsberg, vice president of operations. “We have been hoping to find an appropriate retail space for the last decade and feel very fortunate to have found this site. Until now, our donors had to drive up to our University City Bookstore at Genesee Avenue and Nobel Drive or to our stores in Pacific Beach or Clairemont.” Goodwill’s mission is to provide

made.” Owner Frank Bottini said he and his family did everything in accordance to the city’s rules and regulations, and he urged the council members to deny the appeal. “We don’t believe there is merit to the appeal and ask that you reject it. We are not developers. We are a young family trying to build a house,” he said. “The appeal today is basically — what we can understand — by people who are upset that the house didn’t get designat-

Von Ber left the World Affairs Council in 2008, and the Ambassadorial Roundtable took a hiatus while she worked as the consul general for the Bosnian ambassador in the southwest and lectured locally and internationally. When Mayor Bob Filner, who ran heavily on a platform of cross-border cooperation, was elected last year, von Ber felt the time might be right to start up the conferences again. This time around, von Ber was determined not only to bring ambassadors to the city monthly, but also to host an annual two-day conference featuring discussions on national security, healthcare, globalization, education, cybersecurity, tourism, diplomacy and the luxury industry. “I wanted to focus on two things: the consistency of one ambassador a month and a huge conference once a year,” she said. “The goal is to move ahead and promote San Diego and
people with disabilities or other barriers to employment with jobs by developing their skills and work habits through training. The charitable organization accepts clean, reusable clothing, gently used household goods, collectibles and other treasures at the donation center and provides donors with a tax receipt at the time of donation. San Diego Goodwill, which creates nearly 1,300 jobs in San Diego County, uses the revenue gained from selling donated items, including a fee-for-service, reuse, recycling and salvage activities to fund the operation of paid job-training programs and employment services. She has named the annual conference Excelsior San Diego (excelsior, she said, means “upward” in Latin). “It’s a cool title for us,” she said. “We’re moving upward. We’re going to be on the map. LJFFF: leading fashion writer gives her two cents on fashion and film Leading up to the La Jolla Fashion Film Festival and International Fashion Film Awards on July 26 and 27, La Jolla Today will feature interviews with movers and shakers in the fashion and film industries, some of whom will be attending the awards. This week, fashion blogger and journalist Zandile Blay offers her take on fashion, film and how the two work together to create a new artistic genre. Originally from Ghana, Blay is the Africa style correspondent for The Huffington Post and editor-atlarge for Scene Magazine. She was formerly the digital fashion editor for Essence Magazine, women’s fashion editor for Paper Magazine and readers editor at Seventeen Magazine. Her work has appeared in New York Magazine online, InStyle, Teen People, The New York Sun, The Daily News, America Online, Black Enterprise and Fashionista.com, among others. She founded fashion news blogs The Blay Report and Africa Style Daily. Q: How much did you know about La Jolla before hearing about the festival? A: I had heard about it from a few friends in New York who work
as film critics but wasn’t very familiar with it personally or professionally. Q: Do you feel international events such as the LJFFF can bring people together in ways the Internet and Facebook can’t? A: Absolutely. You can’t dismiss the power of social media networks, but there is something much more potent and purposeful about connecting in person over shared passions. Film and fashion — and the point at which they intersect — have a kinetic appeal that attracts a large cross section of creatives. As a result, the camaraderie and connections that will happen at LJFFF will be nothing short of magical. Q: How have fashion films affected the world of fashion media and blogging? A: They’ve ignited it. Fashion media and blogging are essentially the machine that needs constant feeding. Fashion films, from
major motion pictures to gritty documentaries give fashion editors and bloggers fodder to write about, blog about and tweet about. Even more, like all industries, films have the power of holding a mirror to us and our industry and provide us (fashion professionals) with much-needed context on not just how we perceive each other in this insular industry, but how the world perceives us, too. Q: What do you look for in fashion films? A: The same thing I look for in all films — an ability to clearly and concisely connect with an audience while providing context. Q: What will be the impact of fashion films on fashion marketing in the future? A: That’s a good one. The impact could be, will be, immense. It will up the ante on how organic, gritty, authentic fashion marketing will present itself in the future. It will provide brands with an indicator of what consumers are connecting to. La Jolla-born John Scott Watson, Aug. 12, 1961 ~ May 16, 2013 John was born in La Jolla, grew up in Pacific Beach, attended Kate Sessions Elementary School and Pacific Beach Junior High. He graduated from Mission Bay High School in 1979. He owned his own hardwoodfloor business with his wife of 22 years, Heidi, and raised two children, Emily and Charles John (CJ), in Clairemont. He is also survived by his parents, Mary and Charlie; grandmother Virginia Chisholm; brother Tom (Kristina); nephews Sean and Kory; niece Addison; and many extended family members. He will be in our hearts always and deeply missed. John will especially be missed at local surf spots, when he would surf the pier or at Black’s Beach, where many could hear his boisterous laugh as he caught waves. He would stop in at Cass Street Bar & Grill to get his workers lunch on many occasions. He is gone but not forgotten. John loved the ocean, surfing and fishing, and shared his love of baseball with son CJ and coached CJ’s Little League baseball teams over the years. John loved his dogs and especial-

A memorial service and celebration of life was held May 29 at The Mission Bay Yacht Club, where Pastor Brian Daly of the Pacific Beach Christian Church led the remembrance and celebration to honor the great and kind person that was John Watson. A sunset paddle out followed that same evening at Law Street, where an outpouring of friends and family came together to show their love for John and pay tribute to him. “It’s a blend of bacilli bacteria, and they go after the nutrients and the waste material itself. Once the bacteria run out of food, they will ultimately die off or dry out,” said Merkel. “This is something that has been used multiple times for cleaning and has also been used in the food industry for dissolving waste materials.” The arduous permitting process to clean the coastal bluffs was initially quoted to take two years to complete before a cleanup method could be employed. Furthermore, strict environmental and marine mammal protection guidelines mandated that the method of cleanup not disturb the air, water, bluffs, birds or mammals in the area, limiting options in the sensitive habitat. Local residents and business owners, however, could not stand the stench that affected their local economy that long, and groups like La Jolla Parks & Beaches and the La Jolla Village Merchants Association worked with City Council President Pro Tem Sherri Lightner and Mayor Filner in expediting the cleanup process. “While the powerful stench may seem like a punchline to many, I can
tell you it was nothing to laugh about for the residents and business owners in La Jolla,” said Lightner. “The ongoing odor issues were impacting our quality of life and hurting our local economy, while the tangle of state and federal regulations created a seemingly unsolvable knot of bureaucratic red tape.” Filner declared the area a public health and safety hazard, which helped clear the path to obtaining permits for the cleanup quickly. After exploring various avenues to determine the best environmentally sensitive solution — from falconers, tarps, spikes and a vacuum technique — city agencies and constructive locals found the most appropriate solution in Blue Eagle’s microbial treatment. The price tag for the cleanup, in the order of $50,000 for the initial cleanup and up to $100,000 expected per year for additional treatments, is funded through the city’s Park and Recreation Department. “We think we have a process that works. We’ve done it right. We’ve kept in line with the environmental protections that are guaranteed, but we have to also protect the health and welfare of citizens here in La Jolla,” said Filner. “It just has to be done. FAIR GAME The 2013 San Diego County Fair is preparing to open Saturday, June 8 with a ton of food, entertainment and music, touting a theme of “Game On!” DON BALCH
County Fair puts all the fun, music acts you can handle at your fingertips By KEVIN McKAY
T
he annual mix of down-home agricultural exhibits, belly-busting food, eye-catching entertainment and powerhouse musical lineups is set to return to the Del Mar Fairgrounds for a month-long engagement on Saturday, June 8 with the opening of the 2013 San Diego County Fair. The fair runs through July 4. Touting a theme of “Game On!,” this year’s fair is designed to spotlight classic and nostalgic games and show how these have evolved over the years — from board games and pinball to television, videos and computers — and to demonstrate how technology has enhanced the gaming culture beyond dreams. Of course, the fair has plenty of food and drink vendors spread across the fairway and the infield track area. And each year, Fair officials spice things up with some very unusual food offerings that, well, can test one’s willingness to break the normal gastronomical barriers. This year, among other items, vendors will be selling Krispy Kreme sloppy Joes; deepfried, bacon-wrapped pickles; chipotle BBQ beef chips; bacon beer; wild boar kabobs; and waffle dogs. Also new this year is a “Star Trek Exhibition,” an interactive, museum-style experience involving one of the largest collections of authentic Star Trek artifacts and information ever put on public display, according to Fair officials. For those who can’t get enough of bacon, foodies will be in hog heaven come Sunday, June 16 during the “Big Bite Bacon Fest,” presented by Farmer John. Fair officials said the festival is a funfilled, walk-around tasting event featuring creative bacon dishes from the best chefs and competitive cooks in the county. Each bacon booth will prepare and serve small plates of savory bacon
delights ranging from appetizers to desserts and everything in between. Adult fairgoers can quench their thirst with refreshing bacon-based and baconinspired cocktails and brews. Running throughout the course of the Fair this year will also be a new addition called “The Courage to Remember,” a traveling Holocaust exhibit produced by the Museum of Tolerance, the educational arm of the Simon Wiesenthal Center. The exhibit features 200 exclusive photographs that cannot be seen anywhere else in the world, offering unique insight into the Holocaust. The Fair is again boasting a huge slate of musical entertainment at various venues across the fairgrounds, featuring nationally known entertainers belting out cool tunes ranging from classic rock to country, Latin flavor to modern-day draws. Many of the familiar sights and sounds will greet fairgoers, including the popular AgriFair, the livestock barn and exhibits of animals large and small, put on by members of the 4-H Club who are always available to answer questions. The popular “Turkey Stampede” show, featuring hilarious races pitting turkey against turkey for the prize at the finish line, also returns. Car shows, daily watermelon seed-spitting and corn-husking contests, a motorcycle ride and competition, a Fire Expo (including a demolition derby with firefighters at the wheel) and plenty more awaits fairgoers, with something on tap for all generations. For those who are a little more adventurous, there are plenty of rides and

A majority of Americans, regardless of political preferences, would support solutions from the government to finance long-term care. Seventy-five percent favor tax incentives to encourage saving for long-term care expenses and fifty-one percent would like a government administered plan. The certification effort was spearheaded by Green Team regional lead Patricia Trauth, alongside a team of more than 10 office employees and management. Throughout the process, the team worked to develop and refine green practices in the San Diego office to make it one of six URS offices in the U.S. to be certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. Irvine Company property management and Bycor General Contractors collaborated with the URS team in selecting green building materials and crafting a layout that maximized the use of natural lighting to create an inviting, energy efficient workspace. DEVICE TRIGGERS EVACUATION; FOUND HARMLESS — An engineering student’s suspicious-looking science project raised alarm at an apartment complex in University City on June 4. After moving out of his apartment on Costa Verde Boulevard, the student left behind a pressure cooker with wires sticking out. After
encountering the device just after noon, the apartment manager called police, who requested help from the Metro Arson Strike Team bomb squad. When investigators contacted the student, the man said he meant to discard the project in the trash when he moved out of his residence. Bomb squad members X-rayed the pressure cooker and found it to be harmless. About 10 tenants in the nearest units were initially evacuated and were allowed back into their apartments around 2:30 p.m. OLD GLOBE HONORS UC PERFORMERS — University City residents Samantha Littleford and Samuel Brogadir recently won top honors at The Old Globe Theatre’s annual Globe Honors on May 20. Littleford, a Coronado School of the Arts student, was honored for Outstanding Achievement in Spoken Theatre. Brogadir, a student of San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, was honored for Outstanding Achievement in Musical Theatre. Both recipients received a $1,000 scholarship and will have the opportunity to join an exclusive trip to Los Angeles for a theater show, tour and opportunity to learn directly from theater professionals.

with Vincent Andrunas In 1993, Betty Mabee and a number of other dedicated women founded an organization whose goal was to help children and their caregivers, older people with special needs, crime victims and people with vision problems. They called themselves The Gold Diggers — “GOLD” stand-
ing for “Gifts Of Loving Donors.” Mrs. Mabee died in 2010 at age 88, but the group she helped found continues to specialize in finding and funding worthy smaller charities, including some that are relatively unknown, bringing their efforts to public notice so that others can also help support their efforts. Nearly 250 guests (many in spectacular hats) attended The Gold Diggers’ 20th Anniversary Hats Off to San Diego event recently at the Del Mar Country Club. The annual affair features a hat parade named in honor of Betty Mabee, for which nonprofit organizations design and create elaborate hats and compete for cash prizes. Chaired by Julie Sarno, the event

Guests were invited to cast “secret ballot” votes for their favorite hat, and a tasty three-course lunch was
served. Grants of $5,000 were awarded to two organizations rigorously vetted by The Gold Diggers. Girls Think Tank received one for the Transitional Storage Center project, allowing

La Jolla Today Workshop helps shape inter-city bike trail design By MARIKO LAMB Residents, cyclists and public works officials gathered for a community workshop at the Nobel Recreation Center on May 29 to zero in on the most preferred route for 10 miles of proposed multi-use bike paths spanning from Carmel Valley Road to Gilman Drive. The 10-mile segment is part of the greater Coastal Rail Trail project, which is intended to connect the region’s coastal cities and improve bicycle mobility throughout the region. “The regional bike plan has some overarching goals,” said Chris Carterette, active transportation planner at the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG).
“The primary one is to increase the number of people riding bikes — of all ages and abilities — and try to develop a more safe network.” The vision includes the creation of what Carterette calls “complete” streets — ones that are beneficial for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers alike from Oceanside to downtown San Diego. The cities of Oceanside, Del Mar, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach and San Diego have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to design and construct segments of the trail within each of their own jurisdictions. The 10mile segment discussed at the public forum accounts for just the
northern half of San Diego’s 20-mile commitment under the MOU. The approximately 40-mile continuous corridor will utilize multiuse Class I, Class II and Class III bicycle facilities, among other innovative routes where needed. Although a 2000 SANDAG report initially proposed the project be a Class I facility running along the railroad right of way, certain constraints and opportunities may alter that original plan, said Mike Singleton, principal at KTU+A, consultant for the city. “If we don’t have a Class I facility throughout like the original Coastal Rail Trail was proposing,

we need to have a similar level of experience for the users of that trail system so they feel safe,” he said. “We need to look at a variety of types of facilities to actually make all these connections actually work.” Additionally, certain constraints — including ADA compliance, environmentally sensitive areas and street volume and speed — must be considered, and interconnectivity opportunities to alternative modes of transportation, such as the proposed Mid-Coast Trolley line, Coaster stations and bus stops, must also be factored into the equation to determine the most appropriate route to connect the

Its only staffer, she’s already helped more than 1,500 women and children who are survivors of domestic violence. Before the parade, three celebrity judges (including hat designer Carol Bader, KFMB-TV morning anchor Nichelle Medina and an obscure local social columnist who shall remain nameless) viewed the hat entries without knowing which organizations had entered them. Charged with selecting the hat best representing the event’s theme, “Light Up the World Through Giving,” they chose the “B.A.B.E.S.” (Beating Alzheimers’ By Embracing Science) entry, giving it the $1,000 Golden Shovel Award. The same hat also took second place in the popular vote, winning another $2,000. First place ($3,000) went to Angels of Aseltine, while North Coast Repertory Theatre got third, worth $1,000. Classics 4 Kids won $500 in a drawing among the remaining entries for the consolation prize. Less fortunate, though also quite worthy, were entries from The Autism Tree Project Foundation,
Elderhelp, Employment & Community Options, Friends of Braille Institute Auxiliary, I’m My Own Blessing, The San Diego Floral Association, and Young Audiences of San Diego. All told, The Gold Diggers handed out $21,500 at the event — and $700,000 since their founding.

Founders Steven and Elizabeth Wistrich established their school here in 1993, and their nonprofit company has distinguished itself with its steadfast dedication to ballet’s formal disciplines. Today, it is the only company in the region with both the nationally recognized artistic credentials required to perform the beloved works of George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, and the expertise necessary to present those monumental classics. Last weekend, City Ballet capped its 20th season (which included performances of “Carmina Burana” with the full traditional 100-member choir) at “Ballet en L’air,” an elegant garden party fundraiser at the Rancho Santa Fe estate of Shazia and Haris Jamil. Guests — including numerous La Jollan supporters — enjoyed wines, extensive hors d’oeuvres and desserts. Entertainment featured live music, and ballet performances by students and members of the professional company. Proceeds benefited City Ballet’s educational and outreach programs.

where our schools are and other activity centers that are primary destinations in University City,” said Mark Carpenter, senior associate at KTU+A. “There’s not a perfect route to interconnect everything. We’re just trying to look at the ones that we will get the most benefit from.” Since fall 2012, a broad-based working group of community stakeholders, including representatives from community planning committees, the San Diego Bicycle Coalition, Friends of Rose Creek, Friends of Rose Canyon, UCSD and Walk San Diego, have identified potential corridors that should be evaluated for the multi-use facility. The group evaluates criteria like user experience, connectivity, safety factors, environmental issues, community impact and costs to determine the most preferred alternative. Participants at the workshop were tasked to voice their opinions about potential corridors that have not yet
been identified or corridors that they disagree with. “Our goal is to look at the whole range of alternatives and see what segments are there that we need to be using for these alternatives,” said Carpenter. “We’re looking at a full range of ideas. Nothing has been discounted at this time.” The city’s technical team will use the input gathered from the workshop to make adjustments to the corridors and segments before bringing the options back to the working group in July. Once the working group shares its input about the revisions, preliminary draft alternatives will be shared in a second workshop, where the public will be asked to provide feedback on the more defined alternatives. If there is a clear preferred alternative, the selection will again be shared with the working group and the project will move forward to environmental analysis.
