SDSU's Steve Fisher: All roads lead to the classroom By TERRI STANLEY As soon as Steve Fisher sits down in his office at the Fowler Athletic Center at San Diego State University, he starts a story about how he met his mentor Rob Ades, who died two years ago at age 65 of leukemia. Fisher, head coach of the SDSU men’s basketball team, says he shared a love of the game with Ades, a prominent Washington, D.C., lawyer who represented many

basketball players and coaches as well as the Washington police union. Ades was known as a guy who could get things done and a tough negotiator — a good person to have on your side. After winning basketball's National Invitational Tournament in 1997 and taking the University of Michigan team to the NCAA tournament six times with a national championship in '89, Fisher was fired as head coach over an off-court scandal, a decision that sent shock waves through the college basketball community and is still debated today. Fisher says he and his wife, Angie, were at a low point in their life, and they credit Ades with helping them out. In fact, Fisher says, it was Ades who stepped in and advised Fisher to pull himself together, because not only was he going to get through this but he was going to get a better job. After a one-year stint in the NBA with the Sacramento Kings, that “job” Ades referred to was leading the SDSU men’s basketball team

to national prominence. The team, which closed out this season's record at 23-8, was the No.1 seed going into the Mountain West tournament and was led by two outstanding seniors, Winston Shepard and Skylar Spencer. who received an emotional farewell after their last regular season game from Aztec fans and faculty. (The Aztecs eliminated UNLV from tournament play on March 5 in Las Vegas and opened the event by clawing their way to a win over the Utah State Aggies, 71-65, on March 10.) Ades negotiated an initial sevenyear contract with SDSU for Fisher in 1999, and the rest is history. Fisher’s stats are more than impressive – he has led the Aztecs to the NCAA tournament seven times, including six consecutive NCAA bids, Sweet Sixteen appearances in 2011 and 2014, four Mountain West Conference wins, nine 20-win seasons and... the list goes on.

In March, La Jolla Village Merchants Association took on the arbitration of an event conflict in November and got updates on the Cove seal problem and the third annual Padres La Jolla Day. The group also voted to support a proposal to attempt to create a Maintenance Assessment District to beautify the Village, which would require creation and passage of a ballot measure. Tresha Souza approached the merchants group to seek its approval for the fourth annual So Fine on Kline event, a community block party benefiting Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church and other worthy causes in La Jolla, scheduled for Nov. 13. “This event isn't just to make money for the church but to give something back to the community and bring people out, bring some energy to the Village,” said

Souza. Souza stressed the event, which includes a beer garden, live music and other entertainment, is open to all community members and has been growing in size and participation each year. From the audience, Jerry Parent, co-owner of Adelaide's Florists on Girard Avenue, pointed out that there is a competing longtime community event on that same day – the Holiday Open House, sponsored by several businesses in the 7700 and 7800 blocks of Girard Avenue. Parent said last year's competing So Fine on Kline event had a negative impact on that event. “Our bottom line was down about 30 percent, and merchants spent $100,000 on holiday décor,” Parent said. A month later, sick sea lion pup is improving SeaWorld veterinarians say a starving sea lion rescued a month ago after finding its way into a fancy San Diego restaurant is on the mend. The vets said that the 8-monthold female pup, named Marina, has put on about four pounds and that her bloodwork is encouraging. The underweight and dehydrated sea lion, its left eye swollen shut, was found Feb. 4 asleep in a dining

booth at The Marine Room, an oceanfront restaurant in La Jolla. She has been cared for at SeaWorld's Animal Rescue Center. A newspaper report says experts remain cautiously optimistic about her recovery. If all goes well and her weight continues to increase, she could be released back into the ocean within the next six to eight weeks.

Robotics: Here's a garage band from the post-garage band era

Remember when garage bands were (and still may be) the rage? In the 1960s, surf and rock, blues and psychedelic sounds (along with the occasional funny scent of smoke) came from your neighbors' garages. Today, robotics teams, comprising high school-age kinds, are gathering in some garages and producing rock stars in robotic competition. Fame should follow RoBowties in the next decade just the way it did for some super-talented garage bands of the '60s. For the English major unfamiliar with the topic, robotics is the art of artificial intelligence as applied to the practical use and control of robots. San Diego is a hotbed of high school kids who want a piece of the action. So it is with the RoBowties core team, which has been together for seven years. Isabelle Ho is the captain and a junior at High Tech High Media Arts in Point Loma's Liberty Station. She's credited with the idea for the team's signature bowties – other teams, she explained, wear Tshirts or something equally mundane, and she wanted the team to stand out. Macky Broido is at La Jolla High School, while Max Sun, Owen Gallahue and Erik Holm represent The Bishop's School. Alex Azeka is a senior at Maranatha Christian School, while Anna Azeka is a Maranatha sophomore.

Isabelle's dad, Richard Ho, is one of the two coaches. He explained that the garage is home to the team. "We call ourselves a garage team because that's where we meet,” he explained, “because we expanded from family friends, and kids go to different schools; most of them only see each other at our meetings." The other coach is Veronique Jones. Mike and Sheila Azeka are team mentors. Recently, the RoBowties entered competition at FIRST Tech Challenge. Richard Ho explained that FIRST stands for For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology, a global nonprofit charity founded way back in 1989 to inspire young people to be science and tech leaders. Thousands of teams around the world compete regionally, using autonomous and tele-operated, selfdesigned robots to solve challenges set by FIRST. Half San Diego's 60plus teams qualified for the regional championship on Feb. 27 at Canyon Crest Academy in Carmel Valley. Thirty-six teams were judged in six categories, such as creation of an engineering notebook with documents, ideas, designs and problems. Another category involves community service robotics encouraging interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Some created a prosthetic hand design for kids, manufactured from

3-D printers. Other categories include innovation, team spirit and robot programming. Additionally, Field Play Competition is a 2.5-minute period centering on attempts to surmount global challenges, wherein FIRST tech challenge teams build robots to compete against other teams. RoBowties won first place in field competition and were undefeated during the entire regional competition, with scores of 7-0 in qualifying matches and 4-0 in final rounds. In 2015, RoBowties represented San Diego in the Asia Pacific Invitational in Sydney, Australia. Now, RoBowties will advance to West Super Regional in Oakland on Friday and Saturday, March 25 and 26. RoBowties are working on a 10-

by-10-foot booth for the Oakland competition and are into a steampunk theme, deriving from the sci-fi writing of authors like Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. The FTC world championships will be held in St. Louis in April. Robotics as we know it has been around since 1942, when sci-fi writer Isaac Asimov first coined the term – but RoBowties are newbies making a name for themselves, ratcheting it up in competition and unleashing youthful energy, devotion and dedication with support of some super parents. Put the name in your cell calendar to track the Oakland competition. The best and the brightest began in a garage, and their star is rising, just like that of the garage bands from the grand and glorious days beyond recall. Yeah, yeah, yeah!

ing off a major street and people were complaining, especially older people, that there was no parking and no way to get in (to the Village).” Souza responded that the block party area is a “dead street,” noting she was at a loss to explain why business was down elsewhere in the Village when So Fine drew participants who frequented other parts of the community that day. Association board member Nancy Warwick, whose Warwick’s Books bookstore is on Girard, took a moment to note that the community has a tradition of respecting pre-existing events and not scheduling new events that might compete with them. Board member Christophe Cevasco asked, “Why not combine the two events, the vendors and the food? “It could be an even bigger success for both.” “We need to look for a way to leverage this into something bigger than it was last year and overcome some of the obstacles that emerged,” agreed board member James Niebling. Souza noted it might be difficult to find another date because the church's calendar, a major consideration, is already pretty full. Association president CA Marengo suggested the board create a new subcommittee to study the problem and then try to find a way to accommodate both the So Fine and Holiday Open House groups. In other action: Marengo said another meeting between the community and the mayor to discuss the problem of stench from sea lion and bird waste at the Cove has been scheduled for March 17. The city has been contracting out spraying of the offending Cove area with an anti-bacterial agent in an attempt to quell the smell at the Cove. City crews are now doing the spraying, Marengo said. He added he didn't agree with the city's policy of forgoing spraying when rain is on the way. He said he felt it would be better to spray and then “let Mother Nature do its job” in washing away waste buildup. San Diego Padres representative Brad Dwight offered the association two choices to make the dates for the next La Jolla Day at Petco Park. The day of choice is either Sunday, May 22, versus the Los Angeles Dodgers or Sunday, July 3, versus the New York Yankees. “We'll pass that around to see what everyone wants to do,” said Marengo.

LaCava named La Jolla's first honorary mayor as neighborhood's independence discussed anew By DAVE SCHWAB Longtime community planner Joe LaCava was recently named by La Jolla Town Council as La Jolla's first honorary mayor. The town council bestows the title on a La Jollan who exemplifies “a personal commitment to the community ... who operates with integrity … and has demonstrated the ability to work with others of all backgrounds and points of view, not for their own personal benefit but for the benefit of the community as a whole.” “I am honored to be named as the first honorary mayor of La Jolla,” responded LaCava. “If I deserve this recognition, it is because I stand on the shoulders of others, and that has allowed me to build on their good work. I am humbled to be singled out in a community that is blessed with a multitude of volunteers offering their personal time to meet the needs of others within and outside of our community.” LaCava began as president of the Bird Rock Community Council in his own neighborhood and has since gone on to serve on the La Jolla Community Planning Association, which makes land-use recommendations to the city. He is also in his third term as chair of the San Diego Community Planners Committee, an umbrella group representing the city's 42 planning groups discussing citywide issues. LaCava is looking forward to

What would being mayor of a new city of La Jolla really be like? Steve Haskins, current town council president who was previously deputy mayor of Imperial Beach, a town of about 28,000 residents, had some thoughts about being the mayor of a smaller town. “The first mayor of La Jolla would preferably be someone with longstanding personal ties to the community and someone who has demonstrated that they could easily work with various groups in La Jolla regardless of the issues involved,” Haskins said. “They would need to be humble and down to earth and willing to listen, because they will be swamped with requests and complaints from the moment they are elected. “The person would set the example for the following mayors, sort of like the George Washington of La Jolla. So they would need to be magnanimous, thoughtful and nonpartisan but also be willing to fight to protect La Jolla’s small-town atmosphere. I can think of a few people who would make excellent La Jolla mayors.” Dave Abrams, chair of the La Jolla

“That is a high number,” she pointed out, adding, “So there is talk in state Legislature about creating legislation to waive the need for the larger entity (City of San Diego) to vote, since such larger entities do receive revenue mitigation. Such payments are always factored in to any feasibility study.”

La Jolla Community Planning Association chair Cindy Greatrex says the idea of a self-sustaining La Jolla is more alive than ever.

Traffic & Transportation Committee, said he was “not interested in La Jolla becoming its own city,” but he added that if it were to happen, “I think Joe (LaCava) would be a fine mayor. He is very diplomatic and energetic.” Meanwhile, Cindy Greatrex, current planning association chair, is chair of Independent La Jolla, a nonprofit committed to exploring the community's potential as an independent city. Asked if the incorporation drive is still alive, Greatrex replied, “Still very much active, now more than ever.” Greatrex noted there are 137 municipalities (ranging from hamlet to village) in California looking to form a Special Reorganization (i.e., incorporate as something new).

La Jolla activist Melinda Merryweather also weighed in on the possibility of independence. “The city of San Diego,” she said, “is too big and cannot take care of us any longer. We need to become our own city. If you love La Jolla, you are with us to save it. It only takes money. The process is in place. We have the right under the law to do this. “We are going to reach out in May and see if all the people who think this is a great idea will give us the funds to set us free. The time has come to put up or stop complaining.” Heretofore, rules governing incorporation have required any entity detaching from an existing city and becoming independent to pay a revenue neutrality mitigation payment, so-called "alimony," to compensate the city it's leaving for lost revenues. The last two communities in San Diego County to successfully incorporate were Encinitas and Solana Beach, both in 1986. SEE JOE, Page 12

Lifeguards union chief, ex-councilman Ed Harris to run for mayor Ed Harris, the head of the city's lifeguards union and a former interim City Council member, tossed his hat into the San Diego mayoral ring March 2, according to the City Clerk's Office. Harris represented Council District 2 for most of 2014 after the seat was vacated by Kevin Faulconer when he became mayor and until Councilwoman Lorie Zapf was elected in her new district. He's been a longtime advocate for improving health benefits for lifeguards, who often have to work in contaminated water, and he recently directed the attention of city offi-

cials to a looming staffing crisis -- in which many experienced lifeguards are due to retire in the next couple of years. Faulconer is running for re-election and is also being challenged by former state legislator Lori Saldana. Gita Appelbaum, Marty Gardner, Steven Greenwald, Bilal Homran, Sina Simon Moghadam, Gregory Morales and Lawrence Zynda have also taken out nominating papers to signify their intent to run for mayor. Daylight Saving Time, set for March 13, isn't all it's cracked up to be By MARTIN JONES WESTLIN First, let's you and me get the name right. The U.S. Department of Transportation calls it Daylight Saving Time, not Savings, the way your mom says. And the fact that the DOT is the oversight agency in the federal Uniform Time Act of 1966 makes a certain amount of sense. The feds spend $111 billion a year on transportation – that's a lot of commerce, and if hourly discrepancies result in mass untimely deliveries or irretrievable costs, it's the agency's skinny little butt. For us, Daylight Saving Time arrives anew at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 13. Most of the country will turn its clocks ahead to 3 a.m. so the upcoming warmer days will have more daylight. The exceptions are mildly complex – they include Arizona (except for the Navajo Nation, which does observe the change), Hawaii and the overseas territories of American Samoa, Guam, the Northern

Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands. And Indiana, no stranger to time zone flaps, is split into two zones, Eastern and Central. Don't ask. Daylight Saving Time was first used in Canada in 1908 and enacted during World War I as an energy-saving measure. Today, about 70 of the world's 196 countries observe some kind of time change every year, mostly between early to mid-March and early November. The actions of some persnickety nations (like Uruguay, which has gone back and forth on the issue since 1923, and Turkey, similarly up and down between 1916 and 1985) don't hold a candle to the single most sweeping change in timekeeping history. Antarctica, nearly twice the size of the U.S., went by Chile's clock in observing daylight savings. Chile abolished the time-change practice last year, much to the chagrin of the continent's five

researchers and 3.8 million Adelie penguins. Don't ask. Then there's the wholesale confusion from 60 years ago, when each American locale could enact the time change whenever it wanted. Millions of dollars in communication and transport were lost as Chicago (clearly located in the Midwest) observed Eastern time; Iowa alone issued a staggering 23 different Daylight Saving start and end dates. The change has also had its

effects on wartime and military conduct. One guy, born just after midnight Daylight Saving, argued that standard time was used on official birth recordings in his home state of Delaware – and under official time, he was born the previous day and thus had a much higher draft lottery number, enabling him to avoid conscription in Vietnam. In September of 1999, some West Bank terrorists smuggled a clutch of time bombs to their Israeli counterparts, who misunderstood the time on the bombs (the West Bank was on daylight as Israel had just switched back to standard). You guessed it – the bombs exploded an hour early, killing three terrorists instead of blowing up the two buses the baddies had targeted. Sometimes, justice is unimaginably poetic. Trick-or-treating. Voter turnout. Radio. Conservation. It doesn't take much to imagine the differ-

ence an hour makes in all sorts of ways, especially when money and time (two of this country's most precious commodities) are at stake. How we and the rest of the world muddle along is a mystery that expands every March – so maybe the answer lies in abolishing time altogether. Sometimes, it's more trouble than it's worth. California may soon get this right, as legislation could make it go away in its entirety. If the bill is passed and approved, the state could join Hawaii and most of Arizona in choosing not to observe the chnage. San Jose Assemblyman Kansen Chu said that he believes Daylight Saving Time doesn't achieve its intended purpose — limiting energy use — and that the practice really isn't worth the trouble it causes. Don’t hold your breath. And change your clock.

New watch signs, anti-McMansion plans move ahead at Bird Rock parley dations to the city, is continuing to review zoning laws governing oversize housing developments. “In January, the committee filed a preliminary final report,” noted Ragsdale, adding the committee plans to host several more meetings on so-called “McMansions.” The parleys are to be held at La Jolla Library on March 9, 16 and 26 and April 13. He said the series of meetings will culminate in a Saturday public workshop. The meetings will be held between 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

By DAVE SCHWAB Bird Rock residents were told the time is overdue to replace 53 existing Neighborhood Watch signs around the community as well as being updated on a grass-roots movement to fight “mansionization.” “The Neighborhood Watch signs are looking pretty faded,” said Barbara Dunbar, treasurer of the Bird Rock Community Council, at the advisory group's March 1 meeting. Dunbar noted the group is seeking donations to purchase replacement signs at $42 apiece. When asked if replacing the signs was worth the cost, she answered, “Yes. Police say if the signs look fairly well maintained or new that crooks feel the Neighborhood Watch program is fairly active. It does cut down on the amount of

crime within the neighborhood.” Council board member Jim Ragsdale said a committee previously formed by the La Jolla Community Planning Association, which makes land-use recommen-

By MARTIN JONES WESTLIN I have two pub friends who swear by Ireland and the grass-roots kindnesses of its great people. I feel the same way about mes chers français, so we have a lot of notes to compare, especially when those guys or I are getting ready for a trip. (I'm leaving for Europe in June for what could be as long as five months, two of which will be spent among the French; maybe we'll all catch up next fall, when they'll have gotten back from the place they swear they're moving to one of these years.) The last time we talked, our conversation somehow fell to St. Patrick, who seems to have cornered the market on holiday personality cults – except maybe for Jesus, which is great – but as Irish luck would have it, one noted researcher says Patrick was actually born in France. Seriously. France.

“Rediscovering St. Patrick: A New Theory of Origins,” published in 2013 by Ireland's Columba Press and written by an Irish guy, says that Pat (real name Maewyn Succat) was taken into slavery as a shepherd at age 16 in A.D. 403 in Northwest France's Brittany region, not in Britain, as history originally thought. Church of Ireland clergyman Rev. Marcus Losker, the author, recalled that Patrick's writings say he was kidnapped by Saxon forces “when Irish pirates attacked his father's house at 'Bannavem Tiburniae,' in Latin. The names bear an uncanny resemblance (to Bonavenna de Tiberio, name of the house), and three other place names mentioned in St. Patrick's writings also tie in with areas around (Brittany's) Chateau de Bonaban.” There are records of Patrick having escaped Ireland and landing at

France, visiting Tours, Lerins and Auxerre before returning to Ireland and his remaining life as a bishop; there's no reason to believe he wasn't familiar with the locales in which he found his freedom. Moreover, Patrick's admitted lack of education and communication style (he apologizes many times for his lousy writing in his two known works) fueled Losker's theory that Patrick simply misspelled the name of dad's house. “I was dumbfounded,” Losker told the Belfast Telegraph, adding that he has called for an excavation of Patrick's remains at Downpatrick's Down Cathedral so Roman Catholic Church officials can get to the bottom of things. I told my friends that this is yet another story reflecting France's and the British Isles' star-crossed paths. Both countries sometimes remind me of a rumpled couple resentfully struggling to get through the same

Fisher got the time he needed Fisher and Angie have lived in Del Mar since 1999 and have two sons, Mark and Jay. Mark was assistant basketball coach to the Aztecs for seven years before being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease. He has worked closely with his father for years and continues to do so in a different capacity. A college basketball coach of Fisher’s caliber and expertise was in the right place at the right time. San Diego desperately needed a coach to build a winning team, and Fisher needed a place where he would be given the time to do it, says Siena College basketball coach Jimmy Patsos, a friend of Fisher’s who also counted Ades as a vital coach and mentor. With the arrival of Fisher came wild success and money to a oncedying basketball program. Fisher, who turns 71 March 24, negotiated another three-year contract with SDSU. The team was on fire this season, and its head coach is juggling a million balls in the air as he and the Aztecs are in pursuit of yet another slot at the 2016 NCAA tournament. But before the NCAA bracket match-ups were to be announced, Fisher is still thinking about how he got to SDSU and his friend, Ades, who brought him here. It was Ades who got Michigan to fulfill its financial obligations to Fisher. Ades wasn’t only

I earn it as a coach, and you earn it as a player.” 'It's not me; it's we' Fisher attributes his approach to coaching to his passion for teaching. He establishes a relationship with his players right away and constantly talks to them about expectations of themselves and of the team. There is a big emphasis on commitment and Fisher’s philosophy is all about doing your best — if you do, all boats will rise. “We’re no different than other teams. We all do a lot of the same things. But in this program, there are some basic things that we do every day with our team. I don’t have a million rules, but the rules that we have are important — on time all the time, respect, try your hardest, stay out of trouble, be for the team. We don’t assume that because you can run and jump you know how to play. We teach – the Viejas arena is my classroom. “Whether it’s from 3 to 6 or 1 to 4, it’s the most important class these kids will have all day.”

TRUISMS The following are a few roles to live by from SDSU men's basketball coach Steve Fisher. Family First: My wife Angie and I have been married for 41 years and have been blessed with two sons, Mark and Jay. She was a teacher, and she’s allowed me to be a better teacher and coach because she’s got a perspective, and I listen to what she says on a whole host of things. I tell our players: If you haven’t called home, you better do it – if you don’t call home at least once a week, something’s wrong. The Team: In coaching, we have the word in our locker room — the team, the team, the team. If you will give of yourself and play for others and strive to be the ultimate teammate, you will be better, and we as a group will be better. Thought of the Day: A sure sign of old age is when regret replaces dreams. I’ve had a lot of disappointments along the line, but I have enjoyed every moment of my tenure here. Pet Peeve: The chronic complainer. Sometimes, I just laugh — I listen to talk radio; 95 percent is all negative. People call to complain — rarely do they call to talk about something good. It’s always something that they don’t like. We talk about energy takers and energy givers. I don’t like energy takers. Guilty Pleasure: Buttered popcorn after Angie goes to bed.

The American Heart Association presented the 13th Annual Go Red for Women at the Fairmont Grand del Mar on March 4, during National Heart Month. The program's goal is to educate people about heart disease, as most people aren’t aware that this is the leading killer of women. This organization encourages better lifestyle choices, thus giving women a life without cardiovascular diseases and strokes. All the guest arrived dressed in red and socialized while looking at the vendors at the Go Red Expo as a health screening was set up by UCSD Health. After the silent auction closed, everyone sat down for the luncheon program with co-chairs Catie Madani and Genny Mahmud.

In addition to her brilliant designs, this British fashion icon has founded the Textile Museum in London and has many licenses in China for Royal Doulton, furs for Pologeorgis in New York and a limited edition of makeup for MAC Cosmetics. One of the show highlights was the survivor models, survivors of heart disease. The group was dressed in red wearing Rhodes creations. The climax of the show was a runway strewn with red roses, in keeping with the theme. A terrific finish to a perfect day! Proceeds for this event go to the American Heart Association. the new fiancée my just-finished pillow with her and her future husband’s names and their upcoming wedding date. She took a look at it and ran upstairs to her bedroom to bring back her baby pillow I had made for her 20 years ago. I will be busy making pillows with the various names of great-grandchildren being born and grandchildren getting married. This October, I am entering my tenth decade. As all these grandbabies are entering our world, I will be exiting it. I will most likely not know them in their teens. Even if I make it to 100, they will be only 10 years old. Although my children and grandchildren have heard my stories and have been privy to bits of wisdom as well as unsolicited advice, this next generation will only have some vague memories of a very old, wrinkled little great-grandmother. I have read somewhere that it is important for grandparents to model what old age looks like, for when the grandchildren will be at that age, they will remember their lively, wise and fun grandparents and have similar expectations for themselves. As we know, our minds have a great deal to say about our bodies. So I plan to sing, dance and laugh a lot with that new crop of babies. In the meantime, I exercise

every day with the Fitbit clipped to my waist so I know that I have walked at least 6,000 steps every day. I also try to eat wisely — we all know what that means — forgoing instant gratification for long-term weight stability. All this so that I will be up to being a part of their lives, holding them in my arms, then having them sit on my knees, watching their first steps and perhaps being present when they graduate from kindergarten… Even as my own mortality is looming closer, I am still in good health. At my age, it is said that whatever doesn’t leak dries out, so I expect some organ to start failing, but for now, I wake up every morning without pain. It will be interesting to observe my — hopefully — slow decent into obsolescence. I am curious about the process and the various coping skills I will use. Because energy (and I have a lot of it) never dies, I plan to come back and haunt all my friends with various apparitions or strange, unexplainable happenings! In the meantime, I appreciate every morning that I wake up. I make a point to stop and feel grateful several times during the day. I appreciate the tangerine a friend gave me from his tree, the old blue jeans from years ago that still fit, the friend that called, the breeze on my balcony and

the fact that I can walk, read and, yes especially, write. And so, the births, the impending births and the not-yet impending births make me think about how sweet my life is, how lucky I am, how precious these young lives are and will be. As I thing about their unknown futures, I already worry about them. They should not live near any coastlines, which will disappear with the rising oceans; they should not live where there will be droughts due to global warming; they should not live in cities with high pollution... I will not be there to give them advice. They will have to manage their own lives with the help, guidance and support of their parents (my grandchildren) who have greatly benefited from my wisdom, which I’m sure they will impart to the next generation. This, in fact, is a bit of my immortality. Perhaps they will read one of my poems or maybe even one of my books. Perhaps I will continue to live in the words I have written, for a little while anyway. St. Patrick’s Day Dining Hennessey's gets its Irish up for the big day There are the Irish, see, and then there are those who wish they were. That's pretty much how the world breaks it down, especially on Thursday, March 17. Had he handled his life a little more appropriately, St. Patrick would have been 1,631 this year – as it is, his enormous cult following will pick up the slack at things like the 22nd ShamROCK fête in downtown's Gaslamp Quarter on the 17th, between 4 p.m. and midnight, or the St. Patrick's Day Parade & Festival along Fifth and Sixth avenues off Balboa Park, set for Monday, March 14 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Both events will attract thousands, so be kindly forewarned about parking and stuff. Sure, sauerkraut is one of the Reuben's main components, and the more the better – but this stuff is almost sweet, steeped in its own juice for an insanely long time (you can tell). Reuben, thy name is Hennessey's. Even if it isn't true, everybody knows that St. Patrick is really French (see our story on page XX). The French let the Irish have their fun this time of year, with all the green beer and corned beef and blarney stones and stuff. What the French don't understand is that on March 18, it won't matter whether Pat's Irish, French or Oklahoman. Another Paddy's Day will have come and gone, and a visit to Hennessey's will have made all the difference.

La Jolla playwright Mark Sickman, by his own admission formerly in the advertising industry, is about to open his new musical at the 10th Avenue Arts Center downtown. That would be the first since Sickman’s first musical in San Diego, titled, “Kiss Them and Wish Them Goodbye,” a World War II piece produced at Coronado Playhouse and by Fritz Theatre in 1997. One of the critics who attended at the time said, “A lot of time, energy and love have obviously gone into this undertaking.” By now, Sickman relates, his plays have been staged from coast to coast, and his new musical, “Rope,” was a major award winner at New York’s Venus Theatre last year, competing against 39 other shows. Sickman says the story attests to the legend of the Prince of Hangmen, in which Holland portrays Deputy Marshal Maladon, who's given the authority to execute a convicted murderer’s case, which is under appeal. Maladon has doubts. He wants to retire. His wife wants him to keep on. The show features 11 songs written by the author with The Mystery Mountain Boys. Also cast are Paul Morgavo, M. Keala Milles Jr., Edgar Diaz-Gutierrez and Jeff Carver. Sickman was encouraged by the professionals with whom he interacted in New York to continue to move forward with “Rope.” The San Diego production is his response.

Police effort on holidays, Avenida woes loom for Shores group On the positive side, San Diego Northern Division Police Capt. Mark Hanten told the group that the police are aware of the community's concerns about overnight camping on holidays, especially the Fourth of July, and that every effort will be made to have officers on patrol in Kellogg Park that day. But he added that SDPD continues to suffer from a manpower shortage, which makes tackling huge summer beach

update ($45,000), but (it's) part of a bigger and more expensive picture,” she said. “The studies expire in three years, so to avoid having a study expire, a lot would have to happen in three years, including a metes and bounds survey (another $35,000) and other mandatory items of various pricing levels. So doing a new study is not enough. There has to be a groundswell of financial support for the entire project — donations commensurate to pay costs in a specific timeframe.”

They will also have to launch a voter petition drive to get cityhood on an election ballot. An Initial Fiscal Analysis for the proposed incorporation of La Jolla, done in 2005, concluded that creating a new city of La Jolla at that time would have been financially feasible. Based on cost and revenue projections for an entity within the 92037 ZIP Code boundaries, that analysis projected an approximately $5.9 million general fund surplus for a new city of La Jolla. The previous analysis also determined the city of La Jolla would appear capable of making a compensation payment for separating

Undaunted husband and wife team reinvent a French classic For La Jolla foodies in the culinary know, award-winning chef Jean-Michel Diot’s popular restaurant, Tapenade, was the place to go for the real deal in French cuisine for the last 15 years. Winner of numerous “Best French Restaurant” and “Best of the Best” awards in San Diego, Tapenade was given the Award for Excellence by Wine Spectator magazine eight years in a row. But Diot’s lease on the Fay Avenue Tapenade location (now peppered with construction workers building the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center) was terminated earlier than he had expected despite the extensions he had been promised, which allegedly led to some contentious feelings. He had to deal with a few eviction notices as well and supposedly did not part on the best of terms with the owners. Once he knew that they had to move, Diot and Sylvie, his partner and wife, looked for a new location and landed at 7437 Girard Ave., a smaller and more intimate venue occupying 2,700 square feet versus the original 4,400. “We are very happy with our new location, and we feel that we are dealing with a neighborhood that fits us perfectly,” says Sylvie. “We are treated more respectfully by the management, and the building is very well tended. There is a more thriving professional experience with this new location. The management company cares about our business and the quality they deliver to us.” With the new location came an awareness that Tapenade could not be replicated in the Girard Avenue space, so the pair created a varia-

tion on the original concept – and Bistro du Marché by Tapenade opened in mid-October. When brainstorming for the new name, Jean-Michel, who has frequented local farmers markets for years, wanted to incorporate the French word marché, meaning market, into the name of the restaurant. There were challenges with the move, but after three months at the new location, the Diots say they are pleased with the transition and the robust business that Bistro du Marché is attracting. “It happened that the challenges that we thought would be difficult, a smaller space, a different concept and a new name, were not that difficult,” said Sylvie. “The biggest challenge for Bistro du Marché in 2016 is to make sure that our customers are leaving happy and are ready to come back. We have a lot of repeats, and word of mouth is bringing in new customers.” The couple shares the responsi-

I think we’re in a good place.” The restaurant has streamlined its concept by offering only two menus compared to the four and sometimes five that Tapenade was known for. This simplifies the new operation considerably. On a recent weeknight, Bistro du Marché buzzed with conversation in a décor that creates an authentic Parisian ambiance. Authentici-

ty is a word that Jean-Michel knows something about. Born in France, he began cooking with his grandmother, mother and aunts before training in Lyon alongside some of the best culinary masters in the region. His dishes are classic French, but the eatery’s move has inspired new creations and new variations on some of his traditional favorites. Red and yellow beet salad with goat cheese, crab and mango salad with lime and coconut and wild mushroom ravioles are a few of the time-honored dishes that have followed the restaurant to its Girard Street location. A nouvelle twist on the classic endive salad includes a reinterpretation with a creamy blue cheese dressing, and the Sunday brunch, with the Croque Madame vs. Monsieur, should be on everyone’s list of weekend todos. Sylvie is the first to admit that she and Jean-Michel were nervous about the move and what it would do to their business. Having built their reputation for fine dining over the last 16 years, the idea that this restaurant would become a hybrid of more casual dining and a toptier experience was nerve-wracking for the couple. The competition among the dining scene in La Jolla is fierce, with several large establishments opening up in the last year, including

And unlike Los Angeles and San Francisco, San Diego is not known for its avant-garde, high-level dining, a constant complaint among San Diegans that one may hear at a cocktail party or networking event. Sylvie points out that the dining scene in San Diego and La Jolla has definitely evolved in the past 18 years and that the change has been a positive one. San Diego is a recreational destination steeped in culture and history, but when the subject turns to food, many feel the city comes up a bit short. “Chefs have been working hard to showcase San Diego, but the city remains behind,” says Sylvie. “We have to remember that culinary art is a serious matter. It is all about what’s happening on the plate and with your palate. The visual effect that you have, the flavor and the savor and finally the memory that remains in your mind of a sauce, of the tenderness of the meat, the vegetable preparation — this is the ephemera. San Diego has not reached the level of some other cities in the U.S., but there is progress, and we need to keep raising the bar and make it happen. We are such lucky people to have access to so many produces and to organic farms year-round. We should be able to make it.”

Cabbage is not just for St. Patrick's Day In the fall, I usually purchased a variety of cool-weather vegetables in 6-packs for my gardener Jeff to plant in his vegetable garden. Besides kale, broccoli and bok choy, I also choose several varieties of "head" cabbages that included red Savoy and common "green" cabbage. By March, just in time for St. Patrick's Day (the 16th), there is usually bumper-crop cabbage to share! A member of the brassica family that includes kale, Brussels sprouts and broccoli, cabbage is a nutritious vegetable filled with vitamins and antioxidants. While most recommend eating it raw, juiced or made into sauerkraut, this vegetable still maintains many of its important nutrients when cooked. Growing up, we ate a lot of cabbage, since my Russian maternal grandmother lived with us, and cabbage was a staple in her part of the world – stuffed cabbage, sautéed cabbage and borscht were always on the menu. My father, who was of Irish and German decent, loved sauerkraut and slaws made from cabbage marinated in oil and vinegar

for vegetables, such as Dr. Earth's Tomato - Vegetable and Herb Fertilizer. Since it is about 93 percent water, cabbage needs a good amount of water to grow and stay healthy. Keep it watered around the base of the plant, especially when we have warm, dry days. Snails and slugs also like cabbage, so use a natural snail bait or ground-up eggshells around the plants to keep them away. If aphids appear, wash them away with the hose. After harvesting, wash it well and store in the refrigerator up to three weeks. For St. Patrick's Day, I usually make an old Irish favorite, colcannon, ssentially mashed potatoes with cabbage. While it may not be as low-cal as many cabbage recipes, it is divine comfort food and the perfect companion to corned beef or salmon. The photo is my kitchen table before St. Patrick's Day dinner one year, with Irish soda bread fresh from the oven and one of Jeff's beautiful heads of cabbage.

Colcannon (serves 6) 2 lbs, Russet potatoes, peeled and cut into 2-inch pieces 1 cup Half & Half or whole milk 1 stick unsalted butter, cut into 1tablespoon pieces (set aside 1 tab) 1 lb (about 4 cups) green cabbage, coarsely chopped 4 scallions, chopped (green and white parts) Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste Place potato pieces in a large pot and cover with one inch of salted water. Bring to a simmer and simmer uncovered for about 15 minutes or until potatoes are tender. While potatoes cook, combine the Half & Half, butter (set 1 tab aside), cabbage, scallions, salt and pepper in a large pan, bring to a simmer and cook uncovered for about 10 minutes or until cabbage is tender. Drain the potatoes well, add them to the cabbage mixture and mash to combine. Season with more salt and pepper to suit your taste. Place remaining tablespoon on top of the colcannon before serving.
