Concours car show adopts new theme, charity program By DAVE SCHWAB This year's 12th annual La Jolla Concours D'Elegance car show, set for Scripps Park on Friday through Sunday, April 8 through 10, has a new French theme and new charity benefactors. Until now, part of the proceeds from the event, whose theme this year is “French Curves,”

have gone to support The Monarch School, in downtown's East Village, which serves homeless children. Now, according to event organizer and promoter Michael Dorvillier, participants will be able to donate part of their cost to attend to more deserving groups. “Over the last couple years, we've been trying to figure out ways we

can do more for charities and nonprofits that support our event,” Dorvillier said. “We've found a creative way to give back to those organizations.” Other groups now benefiting from this year's event will include the San Diego Air & Space Museum, La Jolla Village Merchants Association and the USS Midway.

SeaWorld frees entangled whale near LJ Rescuers at SeaWorld on Feb. 21 successfully disentangled a 25-foot juvenile humpback whale, estimated to be 1 year old, observed about three miles off the coast of La Jolla. The marine park’s animal rescue team was alerted to the whale's presence by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife at 1 p.m. and was on scene two hours later. The animal was essentially hogtied with fishing line running through its mouth, pinning down its left pectoral flipper and entangled around its tail fluke area. It

was also dragging an undetermined amount of fishing gear from its tail. It was relatively stationary in the water due to the anchoring effect of the fishing gear. The team made several cuts to the fishing line, working from the front of the body near the whale’s mouth and moving toward its tail. After two hours, a final cut was made to the line near the tail, and the whale was able to swim. The rescue was led by SeaWorld’s curator of mammals, Keith Yip, with the assistance of

SeaWorld animal care specialists Eric Otjen, Jody Westberg and Nick Northcraft. The team also encountered six entangled whales in 2015. So far in 2016, the park has rescued more than 130 ill, injured or stranded sea lions and seals on the beaches of San Diego County and is caring for approximately 100 of those in its Animal Rescue Center. Over its 52-year history, SeaWorld San Diego has rescued more than 16,000 animals.

Parks board adds a member, hears Whale View art pitch By DAVE SCHWAB In February La Jolla Parks and Beaches, Inc., which makes recommendations to the city on coastal parks development, welcomed a new board member and discussed the possibility of public art on the long-term Whale View Point Shoreline Enhancement project. Cindy Greatrex, president of La Jolla Community Planning Association, was added to the group's 20member roster. Board member Ann Dynes introduced a proposal to include public art for Whale View Point Shoreline Enhancement, a long-term effort to spend about $2.1 million to beautify Whale View Point along Coast Boulevard. The yearslong project involves extensive landscaping (including reintroduction of native species), gazebo repair and removal of dead and overgrown vegetation on the cobblestone wall surrounding the Wedding Bowl. Dynes passed out background materials, which included several artist's renderings of gray whales that might be used to grace a barren concrete slab, identified as an “educational plaza.” There is no vehicular parking in the immediate

vicinity of the concrete, but it is on the regular route of pedestrians, bicyclists and Segway leaders showing visitors around. Gray whales can be seen from La Jolla during wintertime on their annual pilgrimage south to Baja California to give birth to their calves. “I've been pursuing some kind of graphic art at that site,” Dynes told the group. “Everybody I talk to thinks it would be charming to have some kind of outdoor public art.” Describing the existing slab as “an ugly piece of concrete,” Dynes said the idea would be to have some art “without any commercial elements at all” to enhance the site. “To me, it would just embellish the experience of visitors,” she said, but she added, “There's no reason for me to pursue this unless I have the support of the group.” Board member Patrick Ahern said he favored “some form of understated art as part of that space,” noting Whale View Point is “a natural asset of our coastal beaches.” Noting there was no “critical mass of opposition” within the parks group, Dynes said she would pursue public art with a whale figure of some kind, adding, “That piece of concrete is no longer nature.”

Every winter, gray whales migrate from Alaska to Baja to breed. At nearly 50 feet long (babies are 16 feet!), these graceful creatures are a sight to behold. had seriously screwed up in their observations of the solar year. By the time he became top man, the calendar allowed for only 355 days – 10 and a quarter days behind its solar counterpart. Stay with me here. In 46 B.C., Caesar figured he'd add one day (called the intercalary) every four years to make up for the slop between the earth's and sun's calendars – but the tradition didn't take hold until after a 90-day transition to help align both. The following year, Caesar installed his intercalary six days before March 1, or what was Feb. 25 at that time. Problem solved? Not quite. Turns out that the pesky solar year is about 11 minutes shy of 365 ¼ days – and the world's star-gazers didn't cop the clue until all the way into the 16th century, when the calendar was messed up again (this time by about 10 days). Enter Pope Gregory XIII, who in 1582 made the revisions we know today. However unwittingly, Greg did his legacy a favor by drawing up his new day tracker. The Gregorian calendar is the most widely used civil calendar in the world. So there you have it, nutshell as it may be. We could have spent some time on the nuts and bolts of it all, reminding you that the solar year is 365.2425 days long (365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds) in an effort to put it into clinical perspective. Come to think of it, we also might have teased your socks by adding that the galactic year (250,000 solar years, the time it takes the sun to orbit the Milky Way) comes complete with its own interminable sequence of leap centuries and millennia. But let's not press our luck. Let's let the day pass without interruption as usual, except for you persnickety leaplings, who have no other claim to viability save your little 24-hour corner. It took us centuries to carve out the day you so blithely call your own – before that galactic year sneaks up and ruins everything, you better enjoy it while it lasts.

Legal District 1 medical pot dispensary sets grand opening Torrey Holistics, the first legal medical marijuana dispensary in Council District 1, which includes La Jolla, is hosting a grand opening Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 27 and 28, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at its Sorrento Valley site at 10671 Roselle St., Suite 100. “Throughout the weekend, our friendly and knowledgeable staff will be welcoming patients to learn about our premium products, take advantage of first-time patient specials and celebrate with music, food and entertainment,” said a company spokesperson. “The team at Torrey Holistics has put the finishing touches on the latest next-generation legal medical cannabis dispensary to open with the support and approval of the city of San Diego.” Torrey Holistics noted that California Gov. Jerry Brown this past fall signed into law comprehensive medical marijuana regulations empowering local municipalities to give patients and provider guidelines for legally dispensing medical cannabis. The Compassionate Use Act of 1996 in California made cannabis for medical use legal but failed to provide the structure as to how dispensaries would provide for patients. The battleground locally over medical marijuana and states’ rights versus federal law dates back to 1996, when 56 percent of California’s voters gave the thumbs-up to the Compassionate Use Act, making California the first state to legalize marijuana for medical use. However, despite approval by state voters, the federal government has continued to maintain that marijuana remains illegal under U.S. law. Today, about half the nation’s states allow the sale and use of medical marijuana. Marijuana has subsequently been legalized for recreational use in Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, Washington state and Washington, D.C. An attempt is under way to put

marijuana legalization on California's election ballot on Nov. 8, with the proposed but not yet certified Control, Regulate and Tax Adult Use of Marijuana Initiative. The measure would legalize marijuana and hemp under state law. It would designate state agencies to license and regulate the marijuana industry while imposing a state excise tax on retail sales of marijuana equal to 15 percent of the sales price and provide state cultivation taxes on marijuana of $9.25 an ounce of flowers and $2.75 an ounce of leaves. The measure would exempt medical marijuana from some taxation. It would establish packaging, labeling, advertising and marketing standards and restrictions for marijuana products. The ballot initiative would also allow local regulation and taxation of marijuana while prohibiting marketing and advertising marijuana to minors. Additionally, it would authorize resentencing and destruction of records for prior marijuana convictions. Twice before has legalizing marijuana for recreational use been on the ballot in California. Both attempts were defeated by voters, the first time in 1972. In 2010, a legalization initiative, Proposition 19, was defeated, with 53.5 percent of voters casting "no" votes. La Jolla Country Day lacrosse player's travels make a world of difference By ED PIPER Wynton Bastian, a promising lacrosse player at La Jolla Country Day School, has faced two instances when his interpersonal skills weren’t up to par: first when his family moved back to Germany four years ago and his German proved faulty; and second when the Bastians relocated from Hamburg to San Diego and Wynton’s subpar lacrosse skills left him sitting on the bench. In the first case, Bastian’s father Helge, a well-traveled synthetic biology scientist, moved the family back to its native land: himself, Bastian’s mother Elke and the 11-year-old Bastian, born in Dusseldorf. Bastian’s spoken German was lacking. “I grew up speaking German,” says the 14-year-old, who has already resided in three countries for almost five years each. “I still speak it at home with my parents all the time. I used to be kind of fluent in French,” he adds, but that has become rusty due to lack of use. “Germany was a big change (after living elsewhere). I had to get my German back up. We were speaking it in our home, but not as much. My school in Hamburg was an international school, so we spoke English in class. But we had a German class, so I got my German skills up through that.” Amid his fair features and tousled hair, looking like he's straight off the beach, he chuckles at us monolingual Americans. “In Europe, the people speak multiple languages,” he says. “In the U.S., people are so amazed when you speak multiple languages.” Meanwhile, he's following in dad's sports footsteps, as the latter played

soccer for a German national team. Accordingly, he says, “I feel like I’ll follow my dad in doing something related to science. “He supports me in whatever I do. I could quit lacrosse someday and switch to baseball, and he would say, ‘OK.’” The second instance occurred in the Bastians’ many switches in residences, this one from Hamburg to San Diego a year ago. Bastian lived in Dusseldorf until he was 3. The family then spent five years in Geneva. A move to St. Louis followed and lasted three years before the return to Germany. Bastian had begun picking up lacrosse in St. Louis in the fourth grade, taking to the sport because “It’s fast. It was something new. I’d never heard of it. It’s interesting, and I fell in love with it.” He now plays year-round, on club teams and in the coming spring for the Torreys team at Country Day. But his skills in lacrosse didn’t measure up to the level played here,

as he had played only in Europe. “I kind of sucked,” he laughs. “I wasn’t used to the way they make teams here. There (in Europe), they have club teams. Everyone who goes out makes the team. No one is cut. Here, you try out and can get cut.” Bastian was a little shocked by the situation. In Hamburg, his parents signed him up for a national team when he was only 11. The advantage was that he had to compete against older players. He was so good in comparison with his teammates that he was named a captain and continued in that role the rest of his time in Hamburg. But in San Diego, the skill level of players was much higher. His solution: Begin improving his stick skills through hard work. “I started working on shooting before school and after,” he says. He worked with Deane Mellor, Country Day's lacrosse associate head coach, who helped him considerably during his eighth-grade year at LJCD. Through his math teacher, lacrosse head coach Rory Hyland, he was invited to practice with the high school varsity despite still being in middle school. “Eventually, I made a club team, Mad Dog. I still play for them.” The athleticism he brings to lacrosse includes his agility and foot speed. Also, “I have a hard shot,” he says. He plays “middie” (midfielder) and attack, which is offense. Amgen Tour of California to start and finish in Mission Bay The 2016 Amgen Tour of California route was recently released, revealing a scenic but challenging course across nearly 800 miles of California's most beautiful terrain where the world's most accomplished cyclists will compete for the overall title May 15 to 22. The race will begin in first-time host city San Diego, the birthplace of

California and the state's second largest city. A natural fit for the nation's premier cycling race, San Diego features a vibrant beach-oriented community whose residents are passionate about living a healthful lifestyle. The first day of racing will start and finish in Mission Bay. The peloton will depart Mission Bay travel-

ing through Balboa Park before heading south toward downtown and the harbor with views of the historic Gaslamp District and Coronado Bridge. The race's first Visit California Sprint will take place in bike-friendly Imperial Beach before heading east toward the rolling hills of East County.

UC gets new fire-rescue unit amid increases in fast response By SANDY LIPPE Squad 56 sounds like the name of a TV show. In truth, it is the name of a new fast-response fire-rescue program in underserved communities. The new unit is located in a house at 3034 Governor Drive in South University City. University City is the second community in San Diego to implement this program. UC was chosen by former fire chief Javier Mainar and the command senior staff. Council president Sherri Lightner, whose District 3 includes La Jolla, campaigned long and hard to get Squad 56 into the community, and Mayor Faulconer approved this program expansion. Encanto was first to host the program and opened up this fast response two-person team of firefighters in an industrial park garage with chairs and a hotplate for the 12-hour shift from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Statistically, the reduced response time improved by two minutes, according to Faulconer. Lee Swanson, spokesperson for San Diego Fire Department, related that it looks as though the response time has cut off five to six minutes. In 2011, a consultant study said there was a great need for more fire stations in 19 San Diego communities to lend themselves to fast response time and prioritize the needs. Governor Drive was one relatively high in priority for a fire station for this 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. program. A fire captain/EMT and firefighter/paramedic make up the team. When asked if there's a possibility the squad will be open 24 hours, Swanson said, "We keep looking at the volume of calls, what are optimal times. We will learn as we go.

Added hours are on the drawing board to be considered or adapted. What works best in Encanto might not work in another neighborhood." About 85 percent of the calls throughout the City of San Diego are medical in nature. How did Squad 56 get its number? Forty-eight stations are up and running around the City with full crews and rigs. Plans are in the works for various places, including No. 50 at Shoreline and a temporary station, 51, which is in a double-wide trailer in Skyline. So UC is named and sequentially numbered Squad 56. "Right now, we don't have people permanently assigned for the two different crews of two firefighters who work four days on and three days off one week and three days on and four days off the next week. Cognizant of neighbors, we don't run sirens unless we have to. Of course, there are laws that lights and sirens must be used if we are racing down the street. We realize we are not usual neighbors, but we hope to be good neighbors. Don't be shy if you want to send us a compliment or a complaint." The squad’s email address is sdfd@sandiego.gov. The response from the neighbors has been supportive. Initially, this program was introduced to the community at both the UC Planning Group and UC Community Association meetings in December of 2015. Good turn: UCSD names new café after Audrey Geisel Audrey Geisel says she always believed the Geisel Library at UCSD was a special place, and so did her late husband Ted (Dr. Seuss). That's why she has been showering the library and campus with gifts over the years. Now, UCSD will do something for the La Jolla philanthropist — it will name the café now under construction in the building as the Geisel Library Café in her honor. Audrey's is expected to be completed in mid to late spring, with a grand

opening planned for the campus and community supporters in May. The café, which has been under construction since last December, is located on the second floor in the east wing of Geisel Library, conveniently situated on the north end of the building’s most heavily used study area, which also houses the overnight study commons. “I’m truly touched that so many of my friends at the UC San Diego Library have decided to name this new café after me,” said Geisel.

“Even before we established the Dr. Seuss Collection here at the library many years ago, I felt that this was a very special place and certainly worthy of my continuing support. I know that Ted felt the same way, so I’m very pleased to know that our support will help to provide the resources and the services — not to mention caffeine – that today’s library patrons need to stay on the cutting edge.” The café is one of the many enhancements planned for the uni-

versity’s flagship building over the next several years, thanks to a $3 million gift made by Geisel in July of 2015, the lead gift in the Geisel Library Revitalization Initiative, a major endeavor aimed at transforming and rejuvenating the interior public spaces of the library. The café will be operated by the university’s Sports Facilities, which manages Peet’s coffeehouse in the north part of campus. Coffee and tea will be supplied by Café Virtuoso, an independent local roaster.

SENIOR LIVING Grandparenting: ‘Far away and always in heart’ By HANNA LAUKKANEN

Humans are one of the rare species that have three or even four generations alive at the same time. This is important because human children are dependent on their parents longer than any other mammal species. Grandparents hold an important role taking care of the children when parents aren’t available. Natasha Josefowitz has been a grandmother for 35 years and soon will be a great-grandmother. All four of her biological grandchildren and three step-grandchildren live across the country, far away from San Diego and still close to her heart. “It is totally different to be a parent than a grandparent,” Josefowitz said. “As a parent, you’re responsible for the behavior of your children. As a grandparent, your only duty is to admire and support them. Criticism should always be about a specific behavior, not a general term. For instance, it is better to say 'When you were late yesterday, I was upset because we missed doing what I had planned' as opposed to angrily stating 'You’re always late.' It is equally important to be specific with praise — instead of 'you are wonderful,' state a specific behavior worthy of praise.” Josefowitz has lectured on various

topics, including grandparenting. One of the favorite lectures of her cruise ship audiences was about living with your children who are not raising their children the way you know they should be raised. Josefowitz sums it up in two words: “Shut up.” She believes in serving as an example of being a vital and fun senior. As a model, the grandchildren will remember when they are old and will hopefully follow suit. When Josefowitz's grandchildren were young, they spent summers at her home. She told them stories about the time when their parents were young as well as stories from great-great-grandparents they never met so the children would know where they come from. She also wrote about the things her children did when they were little, and she gave these notes to them when they had their own children. It was

a lot of fun to compare behaviors across the generations. Josefowitz and her grandchildren email, call, Skype and sometimes visit each other. Grandparents, she said, are the haven children can always turn to. Even if there are problems with their parents, children can always get support and comfort from grandparents. “Grandparents,” she said, “have more time and longer life experiences than parents to talk with the children about life, problems and solutions. Some issues are embarrassing to discuss with parents but may be easier to talk [about] with grandparents.” Josefowitz lives in La Jolla, raised two children and has four grandchildren. She has written 20 business and poetry books. Her articles and poems have been published in more than 100 magazines and newspapers. She writes a column, “Doing It Better,” for La Jolla Village News and is a regular blogger on Huffington Post. In 2015, she was inducted into the San Diego Women’s Hall of Fame. She taught the first course in the U.S. on women in management. How seniors may make their homes safer and more secure By HANNA LAUKKANEN Citizens of the United States have longer life expectancies than 10 years ago, and more seniors need a safe and secure place to live. The problem is that there aren’t as many places to spend your senior life as there are people in need, according to a report from Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies. But a housing problem is avoidable by creating new models for housing, services, construction and technologies. Such innovations will create long-term benefits for the economy. “With the right innovation and policy attention, this transition can be beneficial for the long-term health of the housing market,” realtor.com chief economist Jonathan Smoke says. “Addressing the challenges should result in investments in new construction, renovations to existing housing, increased housing turnover, provision of more affordable housing alternatives and improvements in the infrastructure that will benefit all ages,” he notes.

Vantage makes itself at home with good 'Rasheeda Speaking' For 30 years, Vantage Theatre has done things a little different around these parts – the company doesn't pick plays for a season so much as exploit seasonable plays. The La Jolla-based troupe strikes only whenever its iron is hot, patiently addressing timely big-ticket issues at sites specific to the topic. Its “Cadenza: Mozart's Last Year” used part of Balboa Park's Timken Museum of Art as Wolfgang's apartment; and what better place for last year's play on counterculture figure Ram Dass than breezy, caution-tothe-wind little Ocean Beach! Comes now its “Rasheeda Speaking,” a dramedy centering on race,

friendship and backdoor politics in an apparently unlikely venue -- a doctor's office. This is a pretty good show on a topic done to death from all sides, owing to playwright Joel Drake Johnson's clear-as-a-bell dialogues and savvy coaching by directors and company founders Dori Salois and Robert Salerno. And true to its site-specific form, Vantage has mounted its play in a church (Congregational Church of La Jolla, venue for 85-seat La Jolla Commons Theatre), where the racial harmony factor is certainly not lost on anybody. Least of all your Host. We soon may be seeing more at that site from this always-interest-

ing company. Meanwhile, as gigantic La Jolla Playhouse retains its supposed world-class status, Vantage provides the first community voice Village theater since 2007, with the exit of La Jolla Stage Company. Accordingly, here's a look at the issues “Rasheeda” raises and how La Jolla became the company's focus. Jaclyn's eccentric side has pretty much taken over by the time we meet her. This Chicago medical secretary has been in and out of jobs once too often, owing to her supersensitivities and her incessant braying -- on the air she breathes, on the whereabouts of the office paper

holer, on the dust on the floor and, notably, on the fact that she's black (“Rasheeda,” in fact, is a euphemism here for all middle-aged black women, used by white-collar whites in a sucky attempt at racist humor). Her pain-in-the-ass personality is hot one minute and cold the next, to Dr. Williams' and office manager Ileen's chagrins -- but she's on to something when she suspects that the white guys in corporate have been discussing her termination. The play's final minutes level its surprise in the person of Rose, an otherwise unobtrusive patient who may be sicker than she looks. Her mild eleventh-hour curiosity fuels our speculation about what's come before, not the least of which is Jaclyn's own racism (listen to her shifty speech about her Mexican neighbor), her pointless rhetoric about remuneration for slavery and her apparent savvy in the ways of employment law. Salerno and real-life wife Salois have coached their cast where it does the most good. Whereas Williams (Steve Oliver) is almost playful in his affections for Ileen (Salois), he's every bit the empty suit when it comes to the office's role in corporate politics; Ileen's lilting desire to make everybody feel OK fades ever so reluctantly as Jaclyn (Milena Phillips) becomes more brazen. The audio is the driver here as the speeches' colors and crescendos hold our attention. And where did Vantage find Phillips, whose Jaclyn is at once so collegial and calculating at the drop of a hat? Phillips is very, very good in a role whose subtleties make it harder than it looks. Salois' Ileen is a consummate giver, probably to a fault, and the actor articulates Ileen's pushover side quite believably. Oliver got off to a slow start with Williams as he listened to his own recitations; this cleared up with time. June Gottlieb is cast well to type as Rose, whose revelation makes her role the most important of all. Some (like me) may argue that as we give racism our attention, we necessarily stoke the negatives of our past, on which less-than-flexi-

ble minds may dwell (that's one reason, for example, I'm wary of Black History Month). Nonetheless, the issue has been around all over the globe since God was about 3, and it sticks in the public mind for a reason. For better or worse, Vantage has met the challenge. Congregational Church is celebrating its 100th anniversary in La Jolla and seeks to energize itself in that spirit – enter Vantage and another local company called Different Stages, whose presences have so far filled the requirement. Different Stages is mounting “The Duck Variations,” David Mamet's play about life, love and ducks and stuff, at the same space on the same dates. “We think it's a good partnership,” Salois said. [Church personnel] understand that this piece fits with the community. They're vibrant, and they have good outreach. We go where the need to hear a story is greatest, and that's why we're doing it here. “The people who need to hear the story,” she concluded, “are the ones that think otherwise.” This review is based on the performance of Feb. 20. “Rasheeda Speaking” and “The Duck Variations” run through March 6 at La Jolla Commons Theatre, 1216 Cave St. Admission is $20 for one play and $30 for both. The prolific crocosmia is easier to grow than pronounce With clusters of pointy, swordshaped leaves and brightly colored bell-shaped flowers, crocosmia is an easy-to-grow "bulb" that produces masses of flowers in shades of red, orange and yellow. Crocosmia flowers grow on long, slender, slightly arched stems that can grow up to two feet long. The eye-catching flowers will also catch the eyes of hummingbirds and butterflies and attract them to your garden. Related to irises and gladiolas, the crocosmia "bulb" is not a true bulb but actually a corm. Corms, like bulbs, act as storage units for the plant during its dormant time. Crocosmia corms are available at garden centers from winter through early spring. Plant them in an area of the garden with full to partial sunshine and in well-drained soil. For maximum effect, plant the corms in masses about eight inches apart and two to three inches deep, pointy side up. After planting, the corm will usually begin to sprout a green shoot in about four weeks, depending on how warm it is. Once crocosmia establish in your garden, they are fairly drought tolerant, but when first planted, they need a little more moisture to stimulate their growth. Fertilize them in the spring with a balanced fertilizer with low-nitrogen. Fertilizers spe-

cialized for bulbs include Dr. Earth's Organic Bulb Food (3-15-2), which has plenty of flower-producing phosphorus (the middle number, 15, will help the plants produce an abundance of healthy colorful flowers). I plant my crocosmia mixed in with different varieties of irises that have the same water and fertilizer needs. Usually, my crocosmia bloom in the early spring and will last through the Fourth of July, when

they add a pop of fireworks orange to the garden, but this year, most of them are blooming already. These early flowers have blossomed just in time to feed an Anna's hummingbird nesting nearby. She not only visits the flowers regularly but also vigilantly guards them to keep other hummingbirds away from her favorite feeding territory. As the flowers die, cut their long stems back to the leaf joint, or cut them before they die to bring into

the house to enjoy in floral arrangements. Cutting them back will encourage the plant to produce more flowers. Even after the flowers begin to fade, the leaves will remain attractive and green until late summer. When the foliage turns yellow and begins to die, cut the plants to the ground. It is important to let the leaves die before cutting them, since this is the signal that everything the plant needs to grow back next year has returned to its corm. Crocosmia can be invasive plants and what started as just a few corms

in my garden has grown into a large drift of colorful flowers that needed to be divided last year. About every four years in the fall, divide your crocosmia corms. Over time, if they grow too tightly together, you will notice that they will not produce as many flowers, a good sign it's time to divide. After the leaves have been cut, dig up the corms and carefully divide them into singles, taking care not to disturb the corm's delicate tip. Now you can replant the corms into other areas of the garden or share them with your friends.

Fashion Files: La Jolla newbie brings creations that tell a story Designer Kenneth Barlis, a talented international designer known for his luxury fabrics, recently relocated his commerce from Mission Valley to the upscale open-air shopping of La Plaza La Jolla.
