Kumeyaay, UCSD debate bones BY ADRIANE TILLMAN | VILLAGE NEWS With a bullhorn in hand, Aries River Yumul marched with 40 students and one professor to demand the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) return Native American bones unearthed during an archeological dig in 1976 to the Kumeyaay people to rebury them. The group headed to the chancellor’s office on Feb. 5 with a petition chanting “No debate, repatriate!” Vice-chancellor Gary Matthews met the students in the courtyard to assure them the administration is working through the process and that he is “optimistic the remains will be repatriated.” The university’s desire to return the remains to the tribes is not as easy as handing over a few boxes, however. The university had formed a working group of scholars to determine whether the bones are culturally affiliated with a tribe, as mandated under the federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). The working group has since determined the skeletons are “culturally unidentifiable,” while the Kumeyaay Cultural Repatriation Committee (KCRC) believes the remains belong to them. “Although there is evidence from material culture that people have lived in the San Diego region since the late Pleistocene or early Holocene, the linguistic analyses and archaeological evidence indicate that the Kumeyaay moved into the region within the last few thousand years,” stated the UCSD working group report. “The mtDNA profiles of the skeletons under discussion are not
known; and there is scant genetic data available for the Kumeyaay.” The report goes on to say that there could be some genetic continuity between the skeletons and the Kumeyaay if the latter intermixed and then replaced earlier populations linguistically and culturally. The KCRC, on the other hand, claims that the Viejas Band has inhabited the region for more than 10,000 years, and Sycuan ancestors have lived in the area for 12,000 years. Last spring, UCSD wrote a letter to the Secretary of Interior to begin the repatriation process, but KCRC asked the university to withdraw the letter. KCRC does not want to go through the repatriation process if the record signifies the remains are not “culturally affiliated” to the Kumeyaay people, said Steve Banegas, spokesman for KCRC. BY ANTHONY GENTILE | VILLAGE NEWS Spike and Mike Animation is giving its fans a different taste of animated shorts. Its newest festival, “A New Generation of Spike and Mike Animation,” will play at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) La Jolla multiple times during February and March. “It’s a great 80-minute escape,” Craig “Spike” Decker said. “Nothing is better to escape and have a good time than animation, and this is a very unique show.” What makes this film different from previous Spike and Mike productions — most notably “Spike and Mike’s Sick &
Twisted” — is that it is of a completely different genre. This genre is not so much sick or twisted. “It’s very artistic, sophisticated and international,” Decker said, “but at the same time very humorous with great entertainment value.” Decker created the festival in three years, and said it is one of the top two shows he has produced in terms of quality, humor, diversity and styles of animation. He said he chose to branch off for this project because he had simply received too many films to be ignored that didn’t fit the traditional Spike and Mike mold. SEE SPIKE & MIKE, Page 6

Frank believes a different philosophical approach should have been taken. “Kumeyaay use of the area … predates European settler society by a millennium, at the very least,” Frank said. “Kumeyaay avow a deep sense of personal and communal responsibility for the recovery and proper reburial of all human remains of people who predate European settler society, no matter when or under what circumstances the original interment took place.” Yumul, a junior at UCSD, said the university’s inability to return the remains has blacklisted the university among the Native American community. The body of an 18-year-old AsianAmerican woman was discovered on the cliffs beneath the Torrey Pines Gliderport by a passerby walking the beach on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 12:30 p.m. The woman had reportedly fallen 50 feet. A backpack, water bottle and flashlight — still turned on — was discovered near her body, which was found 80 feet high on the cliffs and airlifted out, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque. She had died of multiple blunt force injuries, according to the medical examiner’s report. It’s unclear why the woman, who was from Millbrae in San Mateo County, had been hiking on the cliffs the night before, Luque said. The Medical Examiner’s Office has withheld her name until her family is notified.

A Turkish immigrant who stabbed a man in Pacific Beach was sentenced Feb. 10 to 285 days he had already served in jail and he will be deported. Agahan Alemdar, 23, who had been living in La Jolla, was released to immigration authorities, said Deputy District Attorney Steve Marquardt, and will be deported because of his felony conviction in the Aug. 3, 2009, incident. Nathaniel Thompkins was stabbed in the neck with a knife following an argument with Alemdar at 4 p.m. in a courtyard at 1038 Hornblend St. San Diego Superior Court Judge Theodore Weathers fined Alemdar $1,060. The judge ordered authorities not to release him from jail, but process him through immigration authorities for deportation.
PLJ to try new trash compactor on Wall St. The trash compactor may be making a return — not to nationwide households but to the streets of La Jolla. Contractor Arnie Mazza has offered to place a solar-powered trash compactor and recycling bin outside the post office on Wall Street at no charge. The 4feet-tall by 2-feet-wide trash compactor can receive six times the amount of garbage than a city trash can, according
to Glen Rasmussen, the secretary for Promote La Jolla. If the “Big Belly,” as it’s called, is a success, Promote La Jolla will consider installing more of them throughout the village. Nearby merchants and volunteers have agreed to dump the contents of the compactors. Merchants are happy with the Big Belly trash and recycling compactor that has stood outside Jeff ’s Burgers in La Jolla Shores for the past few years and has also seen plenty of recyclables, according to Rasmussen. Meanwhile, Promote La Jolla is still considering whether to rehire Urban Core to sweep the streets, gutters and sidewalks twice each week. Microplastics no longer under the radar I like to skim your paper for local news and I’m so glad to see you covering something so important as microplastics (“Facing facts about castoff microplastics in the ocean,” Village News, Feb. 11, page B·1). I pride myself on being an informed consumer, but as a busy mother of three some things go under the radar and this was one of them. I quickly checked all my beauty products and was relieved to see no microplastics in them, and I certainly won’t be purchasing them anytime in the future. Thanks for providing valuable consumer information that has as huge impact on our planet.

Sad day for surfing My name is Roger Raffee. Today I went surfing at Tourmaline surf park. A kitesurfer named Ross buzzed me closely a couple of times. I yelled at him to please stay away from me. I didn’t use any obscenities in asking him to do so, but I was a bit perturbed.
A little while later I took off on a nice wave. While taking off I noticed him on his kiteboard a long distance off, maybe 75 yards or so closer to PB Point than I was, but on the same wave. After I dropped in and was making a turn I was hit hard by him. Judging by the way he flew off his board, he appeared to have been going full speed. The collision was loud and my board was dinged. He bounced towards another surfer, then recovered and took off. I asked the other surfer if he saw what happened, and got his name. Then I got the name of another surfer who saw it. I went in and used the Tourmaline call box to call the lifeguards who then called the police. I wanted to place an assault charge against the kiteboarder. The chief lifeguard at the scene was not on my side, not at all. He told the cop that the kitesurfer told him I dropped in front of him and that the ding on my board appeared to him, the lifeguard, to already have been there. He said, in a very negative tone, that he had heard about me, that I was from Windansea as if being from Windansea implied I was a bad person. I was dumbstruck at the lifeguard’s obvious negative attitude toward me. I replied it’s true, I’m from Windansea but my reputation, whatever it is, is
purely for how I ride waves, not for any mischief I ever caused in or out of the water. The cop was trying to be neutral but he didn’t understand and couldn’t comprehend that a kitesurfer shouldn’t be running into surfers. To him it was just an accident of some type, and therefore as far as he was concerned nobody should be at fault. Josh Hall and Justin Larigione were the other surfers who saw what happened. They both said the kitesurfer headed for me at full speed from a long ways off and ran straight in to me. As I said, I didn’t see him coming. I thought the kitesurfer belonged in jail for reckless endangerment or assault. The cop put us together and asked the kitesurfer to apologize, which he did, although grudgingly. I told the kitesurfer that he had no business riding anywhere close to surfers. He said that it was his understanding that the person first on the wave has the right of way. He said that in front of the cop but that apparently made no impression on the officer. I am 50 now, but when I was younger I spent many years surfing all over the Hawaiian Islands, including the North Shore. Five years ago I spent the entire winter surfing Hanalei Bay and Kauai. It seems to me my life is more in danger now, surfing a mellow

The option to extend the trial period was made explicit when the strong mayor experiment began in 2004. A representative from the mayor’s office attacked the League proposal during a City Council committee discussion last week. He said, “The Mayor believes that this measure, the League’s measure, is a strategy to sink strong-mayor by confusing voters.” Quite the contrary, informing voters about complex and confusing matters of government has always been the League’s high purpose. The League wants to give San Diego voters more Roger Raffee time to make a wise decision about La Jolla whether, when or how to revise the San Diego City Charter. This is consistent with the League’s longstanding commitment to the strengthening of LWV asks for ‘strong voters’ rights and democratic and ethimayor’ extension cal government. I could have been killed or badly injured, and all I was trying to do was catch a pretty, mellow wave at Tourmaline. I didn’t make a complaint about it just because I was angry, which I was, but mainly because I wanted to do something that might help this from happening again. Maybe next time it will be your son or daughter. I hope you print this letter because I wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t speak up, and it will be even more sad if something isn’t done about it.

LJ High opens doors to new student enrollment
La Jolla Country Day School has spent the past five years demolishing its 1960s buildings, living out of portable classrooms and building four distinct campuses for its preschool, elementary, middle and high schools to the tune of $46 million. In the redesign, the private school also built a $10 million visual arts and science building and a $12 million library, plus put down new tennis courts, fields and lights for $3.6 million. Architectural design, as well as technological advancement, has driven much of the redesign in an attempt to create a unique sense of space — and essentially a separate school — for each grade level on the 24-acre campus. The idea was to create a sense of transition, while maintaining some consistency in the design for the school’s 1,079 students as they move from grade to grade since it’s unusual to educate students ages 3 to 18, explained Chris Lavine, director of communications and marketing. Three architect firms were involved in crafting the look for each campus, and Bilbro Construction Company, based in Mission Valley, built the new structures as the general contractor.

Building up The kindergarten was the last phase of the five-year project designed by downtown-based Davy Architecture. Kindergarten students attend a selfenclosed “village” of four classrooms that resemble a cluster of small houses with overhanging roofs and tiny flowerpots outside. Each classroom has its own backyard where the children are experimenting with growing plants in raised beds.

“The genesis for the design was to create a little village of cottages, thinking that when you’re first starting out in school it’s a big step,” said Rick Davy, lead architect for the project with Davy Architecture downtown. “To ease the transition between home and school was to make school a little bit like home.” The kindergarten world is selfenclosed; the children share a sandy playground within their fenced area, they use bathrooms in the classroom and lunch is delivered to their neck of the campus. The preschool nearby is similar, on a smaller scale, with tiny toys, a tiny bridge leading into the classroom and tiny chairs. The classroom ceilings sport patterns of train tracks, leaves and paw prints for visual enjoyment when the
preschoolers lie horizontal for their naps. La Jolla Country Day invested enough architectural thought into conserving energy in the kindergarten village that it plans to certify its efforts through Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) at the gold level. Davy Architecture insulated the walls, installed energy-efficient appliances and created a succulent garden nearby to teach students about the native, drought-tolerant plants. Sunroofs contribute to the children’s wellbeing as much as to the environment by providing natural lighting through a translucent window that prevents glare. “Throughout the years, architects have learned that there are a few things that make for good, wholesome, positive environments and there are a few things
that don’t — like cold, dark places without windows,” Davy said. All students from tots to seniors share the architectural and pivotal mother ship of the campus: the library, designed by downtown-based Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects. The three-story wall of slanted windows — a perpetual reflective eye — provides each floor with a sun-drenched reading room for each grade level. The entrance to the library is grand with tall ceilings, a gallery of artwork and a baby grand piano in the corner that students are free to play at whim. “You can definitely find our art facilities now,” said Mark Marcus, assistant head of school for operations. “Before they were hidden so far away you would never know they existed. You can also find the space for the library, which was small before and inadequate, and now we’re in a facility that is serving the students the way they should be served.” Student life continues in leaps and bounds from the cottage existence of kindergarten to the blocky middle school campus wrapped around a grassy quadrangle to denote a collegiate atmosphere, also designed by Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects. Architect Carrier Johnson designed the Visual Arts and Science building, which features spacious art rooms and functional labs. The separation between the schools has also made drop-off and pick-up for parents more manageable, since parents collect their children from separate parking lots and head for individual administrative buildings for each grade level. “I think it’s a terrific improvement to the school to give the teachers the tools and facilities to do the type of academic learning that we need to have take place on this campus,” Marcus said. Blink and you’ll miss UC San Diego’s production of “The Revenger’s Tragedy,” as well as Lyric Opera San Diego’s production of Stephen Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music.” Each has its merits, the former for its rarity and the second, just because it’s Sondheim well done. La Jolla Playhouse artistic director Christopher Ashley, this season’s Quinn Martin Director in Residence at UCSD, stages Thomas Middleton’s Jacobean revenge tragedy at the Potiker Theatre though Saturday night only. There are 21 characters (played by MFA graduate actors) in “The Revenger’s Tragedy,” most of them related in some way to a licentious Italian Duke. The protagonist, Vindice (Johnny Gill) blames the Duke (Hugo Medina) for the death of his compromised sweetheart some years ago, so he sets about eliminating the Duke, his second Duchess (Marshel Adams), his eldest son Lussurioso (Ross Crain), and all his offspring, legitimate and illegitimate, including the Duke’s bas-

The physical production, designed by Robert Tintoc, Sarah Cogan, Stephen Siercks and Alyssa Ishii, with digital design by Ian Wallace, is a visual and aural knockout of endless fascination, and Gill, Medina and Crain are always worth seeing. Cirque du Seacrest Starry, starry nights
with Vincent Andrunas Seacrest Village Retirement Communities is a nonprofit charitable organization serving the San Diego community since 1944. With a campus in Encinitas and another in the Rancho Bernardo area, they are committed to the highest standards in retirement living, assisted living, Alzheimer’s/dementia care, and skilled nursing/rehabilitation/long-term care. Seacrest was created and maintained through the generous support of San Diego families, and their Women’s Auxiliary helps by periodically hosting fund-raising events. One of their most glamorous ever was their 32nd annual gala, the Cirque du Seacrest Masquerade Ball, held this month at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. Esther and Bud Fischer were honorary co-chairs, and the event recognized the Encinitas and Poway fire departments for their outstanding service to Seacrest’s residents and staff. The firefighters and emergency technicians respond almost daily, tending to the needs of the residents with tremendous concern for their safety and overall wellbeing. Guests arriving at the gala were greeted by clowns, stilt-walkers and other
cirque denizens, all of whom provided special entertainment during the cocktail reception, performing or simply lurking smartly about in their elaborate and imaginative costumes. A jazz trio played as guests enjoyed libations and traypassed hors d’oeuvres. Some among the black-tie crowd sported masks or costumes, and a table at the entrance held a large assortment of masquerade favors for guests to wear or carry, and to keep as souvenirs of the evening. Following the reception, everyone retired to the dining room, where they were served a delicious dinner featuring moist, tender fish; tasty beef; and a decadent dessert. Then came the stunning highlight of the evening — an exciting half-hour cirque show developed just for Seacrest. The all-star cast of performers included both local cirque stars and acrobats that travel all around the United States. The show began and ended with the powerful sounds of Taiko drums, and presented feats of strength, skill, agility and flexibility. The action alternated between two stages, positioned respectively at the front and back of the room, allowing great views for everyone. An aerial chiffon act combined grace and beauty, and guests were
awed by displays of juggling, hand-tohand balancing, chair stacking and body contortion. The exciting, highenergy presentation and the satisfying duration of the program made this a show worthy of attending just for itself — but remember, it was only a part of this very enjoyable and satisfying evening. The party continued with dancing to the sounds of Society Beat of San Diego, which kept many guests busy for the rest of the night. Another sweet touch was a candy buffet, which offered an array of bowls and dishes filled with a great variety of colorful candies. Good-sized plastic bags were provided, and sweettoothed partygoers were encouraged to scoop up all the candy they wanted, both to eat there and to take home and enjoy at their leisure. From the look of the valet line at the end of the evening, the latter was a very popular option!

BRCC’s new budget ups maintenance assessment

BY ADRIANE TILLMAN | VILLAGE NEWS The Bird Rock Community Council (BRCC) approved the 2011 budget for the Maintenance Assessment District (M.A.D,), a voter-approved tax on property owners largely to maintain the plantings along La Jolla Boulevard. The BRCC approved the M.A.D. budget for fiscal year July 2010 through June 2011 at its Feb. 2 meeting. The City Council will approve the budget during the budget process starting in late February. Single-family homes will be assessed $78 for the M.A.D. condo dwellers $55 and commercial property owners assessed an average $395, depending on the size of the property. “This will probably be the normal rate from here going forward, with a few cost-of-living adjustments,” said M.A.D. designated representative Joe La Cava. Last year, property owners saw uncharacteristically low assessment fees due to a large reserve the BRCC felt uncomfortable sitting on. Singlefamilies were assessed $25, condos $20 and commercial property owners around $150.

Greening the boulevard The lion’s share of the budget — $84,000 — pays contractor Brewer Lawn and Landscape Maintenance to maintain the shrubs and trees planted along the median and on the roundabouts along La Jolla Boulevard. The budget includes $12,700 for irrigation, electricity and storm drain fees. The contract is actually only for $56,000 but the M.A.D. budgets $84,000 for landscaping to build a rainy day fund for unseen problems such as storm damage. The money rolls over from year to year if it’s not used. The BRCC has also set aside $20,000 to pull SEE BRCC, Page 12
Chinese culture will be on the prowl downtown this month. The 28th annual San Diego Chinese New Year Fair will ring in the Year of the Tiger on Feb. 20 and 21 in downtown’s Asian Pacific Thematic Historic District. “If they want to come out and check out local culture, we have live performances and food and booths for families,” said Linh Du, a volunteer with event coordinator San Diego Chinese Center. The Year of the Metal Tiger, year 4708 on the lunar calendar, officially began Feb. 14. According to Online Chinese Astrology, the combined metal tiger signifies the energy to begin activity and the determination to follow it, and that events set in motion will gain steam in the new year. Du said she expects about 25,000 people to attend the free two-day festival that will take place between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day. Entertainment at the event includes Chinese acrobats, local folk dance and music performances, local martial arts performers and an Asian story theater, in addition to various food and vendor booths. “It’s a family event, so bring the kids,” Du said. “It’s good for families because we have our children’s center.” Activities in the children’s area include Chinese crafts and calligraphy. There will also be a children’s lantern parade. The nearby San Diego Chinese Historic Museum will also take part in the Chinese New Year festivities. The museum, located at 404 Third Ave., has prepared special exhibits for the fair, including an exhibition of Chinese New Year prints and a display case dedicated to the new year with firecrackers, lanterns and a lion’s head. “We have about 60 to 70 copies from the Chinese Palace Museum (in the Forbidden City),” Alexander Chuang, executive director of the SEE TIGER, Page 12
New boutiques serve up stylish accessories BY ADRIANE TILLMAN | VILLAGE NEWS La Jolla women who appreciate the art of a well-designed shoe probably know about Serenity Boutique that opened at 864 Prospect St. in December. The boutique sells Jeffrey Campbell’s collection, Dan Sara’s boots, Kelsi Dagger’s snakeskin-patterned heels, Voletile’s sandals and Brazilian designer Schutz’s strappy heels. Jeffrey Campbell’s 4-inch turquoise heels constructed of soft Italian leather appear comfortable enough to be Cinderella’s nocturnal slipper for both the coach and the pumpkin. “Women tell me that these shoes don’t hurt their knees,” said 35-yearold Axelan Ziba, who opened the store with his wife, Farnaz. The couple set up the boutique to show off their designers’ work like an art gallery. A single shoe is displayed
on ornate wooden tables. Thick redand-gold curtains hang from the windows; paintings stand on easels and a plush red ottoman rests in the center of the room. “We made it just like you’re at home,” Axelan said. “You won’t see any shelves because that means you’re in a store. We want people to know that this is their shoe closet.” The couple chose the small store on Prospect Street for its ornate façade with angels chiseled into the stone, and because rent on Girard Avenue was double the price. “We have to work harder to be recognized by tourists and locals,” Axelan said about his location on Prospect Street. “We’re surviving 40 percent from locals and 60 percent from tourists. We do want to become a destination for locals.” The Zibas moved to San Diego two years ago from Montreal, where they
ran a women’s apparel boutique and sold shoes privately to clients in Toronto. Emigrants from Iran, Franza holds a degree in fashion design and Axelan works as a business consultant. Axelan has also recently published a book called “Journey to Unknown” about his family’s tribulations following the Islamic revolution in Iran. SPORTS Bishop’s booters top LJCD 2-1 in key battle BY DAVE THOMAS | VILLAGE NEWS Whenever The Bishop’s School and La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School get together in sports, expect a battle. That was the case last week as the two met in a key Coastal League boys soccer matchup, with the Knights prevailing 2-1. LJCD dominated the first half and took the lead before Bishop’s rallied on goals from Harrison Flagg and Stefano Vidali. The win moved Bishop’s into first place — for the time being — in the league race. LJCD rebounded from the loss to rival Bishop’s School to post a 1-0 win over Francis Parker last Thursday afternoon. The loss was Parker’s first of the season. Rodrigo Cuenca scored the only goal of the game early in the second half on a volley set up by a flick header from Dennis Roth. action this week with a mark of 3-8-7. According to Savitz, Robby Ortiz has been excellent this season playing in the midfield and as the team’s sweeper. Savitz noted that Juan Martinez has been a great leader, who, after being moved from sweeper to forward, has created a lot of chances for the team. Youri Ishikawa has done extremely well, according to Savitz, as his shot-stopping ability and overall play has helped him become one of the best goalkeepers in the Western League. “We had a tough schedule this year, and did not create enough goal scoring opportunities early on,” Savitz said. “During the second half of the season, we created many chances in the final third but we lacked a bit of luck and composure. The boys have continued to work hard and battle in every game. Their work ethic has helped us compete in every game, even if the results have not gone our way.” I

LJCD girls cagers win 20th game The La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School girls basketball team captured its 20th win of the season last week in a 59-50 victory over rival Bishop’s School. The win was the 16th straight for LJCD and clinched the Coastal South League championship for the Lady Torreys. LJCD took a 28-26 halftime lead and was up 42-40 at the end of the third quarter. It was a fourth-quarter 8-0 run charged by tenacious defense that lifted LJCD to victory. Sophomore Maya Hood paced the Lady Torreys with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Senior Ariana Elegado had 15 points and five assists, while Briteesha Solomon added nine points and four steals. Also playing well for the Lady Torreys was freshman Kelsey Plum with nine points and a key steal in the fourth quarter that helped the LJCD run. Junior Kaylah Miller added eight points, including 3-for-4 from the free-throw line, while sophomore Malina Hood added four points and three rebounds. Bryn Stark and Alissa Campanero paced Bishop’s School with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
