La Jolla wildlife drone photographer Domenic Biagini recently announced to his 26,000-plus Instagram followers that he is starting his own whale watching company on Labor Day weekend. After spending the past two years capturing incredible photos and videos of humpbacks, fin and minke whales for San Diego Whale Watch, Biagini is setting sail on his own with Gone Whale Watching. Rather than the larger tours most local companies give, Biagini said he wanted to focus on the smaller crowd (five people max) so he could provide a unique and intimate experience with some of San Diego’s most majestic underwater creatures. “What I really want to focus on is the customer experience here, and

How do we go about making sure that it’s not only that the passenger that gets the best experience? How do we do it in a way that is sustainable and eco-friendly to the marine life?” Biagini will take out his Gone Whale Watching tours daily for two to three hours and will be offering special workshops on drone photography and other long-range trips — like the ones he usually takes on his own. Everything from spontaneous trips to catch a rare orca sighting to staying out a little longer because a pod of dolphins
decided to put on a show is possible with Biagini. “Last week I went out to San Clemente Island and that's 65 miles from Mission Bay,” he said. “A typical tour here doesn't go much further than 10 to 12 miles. But when you extend out to such a different part of the ocean, you come across things that you don't see in the near coastal waters.” Like the rare and exotic Bryde’s whale that he witnessed lunging out of the water into a school of tuna fish. “To get offshore and see things like that is a really special feeling. A Nov. 19 preliminary hearing was set Friday, July 26, for a young man accused of killing a woman and wounding three others at a La Jolla house party on June 23. Odyssey Sellers Carrillo, 18, has been charged with murder in the death of Nina Silver, 20, who was with a group standing at a party outside at 12:30 a.m. off Cuvier Street near Pearl Street in La Jolla. Carrillo pleaded not guilty to murder and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon in the same shooting spree in which a gunman fired shots into the crowd. No bail has been set for him and he remains in the central jail. The prosecutor has not said whether Carrillo was the gunman or the driver, but no one else has been charged. Carrillo was arrested July 17 by San Diego Police. San Diego Superior Court Judge Michael Smyth ordered Carrillo to next appear in court on Aug. 7 for a status hearing of the case. Court documents say Carrillo was convicted as a juvenile of robbery at gunpoint and he was barred from possessing a firearm. He was 15 years old at the time in an incident on Oct. 19, 2016, involving the hold-up. Juvenile records are normally not public record, but Carrillo is charged in this case with being a person who was banned from possessing a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun when the incident in La Jolla occurred. He is also charged with evading officers with reckless driving on July 17 before his arrest.

UCSD institute tackles doctor burnout with new program BY ADAM BEHAR | LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS
Imagine feeling so burned out and emotionally drained that you make an appointment with a doctor, only to learn that your doctor is equally burned out. It may not be what patients particularly want to hear about their doctor, but it is a reminder that doctors are human. The burnout epidemic among doctors may not get talked about much in the media, but it has captured the attention of philanthropist T. Denny Sanford, whose generous funding has enabled the creation of the T. Denny Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion, at the University of California at San Diego. "We are immensely grateful to Denny Sanford for his transformative generosity and his vision to address physician burnout," said UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla. The institute, which UCSD announced last month, will
conduct research that it will use to develop new methods of enhancing the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of doctors and their patients. Trainings and new curriculum will also be developed for medical school students, with an emphasis on cultivating compassion and empathy, and reducing burnout. Sanford, a South Dakota businessman well known in San Diego’s philanthropy community, previously gave $100 million to UCSD to fund what is now the university's Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center. He has also donated millions of dollars to build children's medical facilities in South Dakota, Minnesota and Florida. "I have been inspired by the work and teachings of the Dalai Lama, whose interest in the intersection where science and faith meet is deep and profound," Sanford said in a statement. "I have had the opportunity to see how grace, humanity

and kindness can change people and the world. This gift extends that vision." A recent Medscape survey of 15,000 doctors and medical professionals found that 44% had experienced burnout and 15% acknowledged having had clinical depression. Also, with 40 suicides per 100,000 people,

In July at La Jolla Village Merchants Association, the new director of Enhance La Jolla Maintenance Assessment District was introduced, and the board discussed numerous marketing ventures. Said Enhance La Jolla Board president Ed Witt of new general manager John Unbewust, “He will be working with the sub-contractors to be hired to do the work of the MAD. He is very well qualified and lives in the MAD too.” Unbewust is a recently retired resident who’s lived in the Village for 15 years. “If all goes according to plan, the MAD will go into effect Oct. 1,” Unbewust told LJVMA board July 10 adding, “I unretired after being selected.” Noting his role would be a “part-time job,” Unbewust said the new MAD’s purpose is to “start to do some of the things (needed) to supplement what the City already does in the Village.”
Unbewust added the MAD will be a “catalyst to get folks engaged. More needs to be done. We want to make the Jewel shine like it did years ago.” The new director said the assessment district’s responsibilities are clearly spelled out and include power washing of sidewalks and cleaning in and around trash receptacles. “There will also be contractual landscape work, tree trimming, cleaning up and getting rid of trashy looking areas,” he said. “There will be a third supplemental trash pickup focused primarily on weekends.” Unbewust said graffiti removal and cleanup of dirty curbs and gutters are also in the authorized mix of functions the MAD will perform. He added three contracts with vendors to perform supplemental services are expected to be signed in September. “I’ll be the face of the district,” Unbewust concluded. Passed by a 56 percent to 44

LJBA argued the MAD was unlawful because it constitutes a second tax on services the city is already obligated by its charter to provide. Concerning the merchant group’s Oct. 9 annual meeting and board elections, LJVMA executive director Jodi Rudick said self nominations for candidates are due Aug. 8. A Sept. 11 candidates’ forum is also scheduled. “We don’t want this (board) to be good ole boys or girls clubs,” Rudick said adding that merchants, who want to vote in the election, must be current with their business tax licenses qualifying them for membership in the La Jolla bid.

There is a common perception among the public that doctors tend to lack a proper bedside manner. Many doctors, of course, enter the field because they are compassionate and want to reduce people’s suffering. Experts say the main issue is not the doctors themselves but the system. “The problem right now,” said Dr. Sunny Smith, co-medical director of UCSD’s Student-Run Free Clinic, “is that the systems that are in place in medical training and in medical practice really cause suffering in the people who are practicing medicine and it makes us lose our compassion. UC San Diego ranks 7th The University of California San Diego recently ranked 7th among public U.S. universities by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR). The campus netted the no. 21 spot among all U.S. universities and was named 27th worldwide in the annual rankings. The CWUR list rated 20,000 universities across the globe, putting UC San Diego in the top 0.2% of the world’s best higher education institutions. Recent breakthroughs from the university include the establishment of the new institute that will conduct innovative research into the neurological basis of compassion. Also, a recent landmark UC San Diego study of more than 165,000 U.S. veterans confirms some individuals have a genetic vulnerability to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In July, the La Jolla Shores Association (LJSA) endorsed the Challenged Athletes Foundation’s (CAF) annual triathlon, and heard about upcoming infrastructure improvements in the neighborhood. Katie Huburt of CAF, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit supporting and encouraging the physically challenged to pursue active lifestyles and competitive sports, talked to community planners about the 26th annual Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge. The event will be held at La Jolla Shores and La Jolla Cove this year on Sunday, Oct. 20. It is a 1-mile swim, 44-mile bike ride and 10mile run. “We’re a leader in providing people with physical
challenges the opportunity to get back into sports,” said Huburt. “We gave more than 2,600 grants to 103 different sports last year.” Hubert said the San Diego Million Dollar Challenge fundraising bike ride from the San Francisco Bay Area to San Diego from Oct. 1218 raises $1 million for challenged athletes and adaptive sports. The ride ends at La Jolla Shores. “It’s about families, picnicking and surf clinics put on by the Seau Foundation that Friday,” said Huburt. “There’s a big celebration at the end welcoming riders back home.” LJSA board unanimously supported the triathlon. District 1 staffer Mauricio Medina said funds will be in next year’s city budget to repave La Jolla Parkway. He added there is also $1.3 mil-
lion in next year’s budget for brush removal in that area. “It’s a fire hazard in those weeds,” said LJSA chair Janie Emerson. “Somebody could just throw a cigarette and there are homes behind it.” Medina reiterated that the Get It Done app on the city’s website remains the best way for people to report problems and infrastructure issues that need to be addressed. In other matters: • Mary Coakley Munk, wife of the famed late Scripps oceanographer Walter Munk, said two events are being planned to celebrate what would have been his 102nd birthday in October: a symposium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and a paddle-out for Walter set for Saturday, Oct. 19. Munk died Feb. 8 this year at his home in La Jolla Shores.

TOY DRIVE COLLECTS 12,000 STUFFED ANIMALS The Care ‘n Share Toy Drive, a project of the Torrey Pines Rotary Club, distributed more than 12,850 new and gently used stuffed animals from its collection drive at the San Diego County Fair. The toys were distributed to children from eight local organizations. “We could not have done it without the wonderful support of the San Diego community!” said Nancy Stoke, chair. “It is heartwarming to see both the faces of the children who choose to donate their prizes

La Jolla real estate agent awaits Aug. 16 sentencing BY NEAL PUTNAM | LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS
The owner of a La Jolla real estate agency will be sentenced Aug. 16 after he pleaded guilty to molesting two girls and possession of harmful matter on three electronic devices. Donald Hickey, 62, faces a sentence of 25 years to life in state prison when he is sentenced by San Diego Superior Court Judge Yvonne Campos. Hickey pleaded guilty in July and signed a written statement that admitted he molested both girls who were under 14 years of age and that he committed substantial misconduct. The material that was on his electronic devices depicted minors having sexual contact. He will be ordered to register as a sex offender for life. He remains in the George Bailey Detention Facility without bail. Hickey registered his real estate agency on Prospect Street in 2009, and records still list Hickey as the
owner. Someone else may have since purchased it as online records list another person affiliated with it recently. His agency also listed Hickey's Clairemont home address as another location. His attorney, Danielle Iredale, wrote in court documents that Hickey had no prior criminal record. She attempted to get his case into a diversion program for mental health treatment, but that was denied. A number of similar charges including oral copulation with minors were dismissed after he pleaded guilty to five counts. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reported that someone with Hickey's email address and phone number uploaded images of suspected child pornography in September 2016. The organization reported it to the San Diego Police Department and a detective with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force began investigating it, according to records.

Doing it Better By Natasha Josefowitz, Ph.D. After our wedding in April 1949 in Beverly Hills, my husband, Sam Josefowitz, and I started our lives together in New York. Sam and his brother David came up with the idea — adapted from the Book of the Month Club — to start a record of the month club. David was a violinist and conductor and was familiar with the music scene in the city. Sam and I would often go to night clubs to listen to jazz combos for David to record both known and unknown artists on red vinyl. These recordings were promoted as Record of the Month clubs using many different genres of music. The clubs included Jazz Tone Society, Concert Hall Society, Opera Society, Handel Society, etc. As the number of subscribers grew, they planned to expand their mail-order record clubs to foreign markets, eventually adding mail-order book clubs, which were still unknown outside of the U.S.
Sam decided to combine a four-month exploratory business trip with our honeymoon; this was to become the standard for all our vacations for the next 25 years, mixing business with holidays. We visited five South American countries: Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Peru to determine if we could establish local businesses to begin Record of the Month clubs. Sam found business partners through friends’ referrals and looking through phone books, identifying who might be interested in exploring a partnership. This was 1949 and there were very few tourists; people were always eager to meet and do business with Americans. I have many memories of that trip. I had a cousin living in Rio de Janeiro who was happy to show us around. He gave me an enormous aquamarine he had found in a local mine; it was almost white instead of the more valuable blue color. Sam put it in his coat pocket. At the next leg of our journey, Buenos Aires, the customs officers looked through our luggage. In patting us down, they discovered a bulge in Sam’s coat and found the stone — “a diamond we had not declared,” they said. Not listening to our protestations, we had to wait four hours for a jewelry appraiser to come to the airport. The apprais-
er laughed upon seeing the stone and gave it a $5 value. I still have that stone, which indeed looks like a very dull diamond. We were finally released to continue to our hotel that faced the famous Copacabana Beach, where topless was the fashion. Our next stop was Santiago, Chile. There were no jets yet, and because the Andes were higher than a DC3 could fly, the plane flew between the mountain peaks. It was unnerving to see land above us and the wings almost touching the sides of the cliffs. After our stay in Chile, we flew on to Lima, Peru. There we were welcomed by friends of friends of ours. We were invited for dinner in their home. I admired the beautiful embroidered tablecloth and an unusual ashtray carved out of agate, a semi-precious stone. I was not familiar with the Peruvian custom that if a guest admired an object in your home, you had to give it to them. The next day, much to my embarrassment, a package with the tablecloth and ashtray was delivered to our hotel room. I still have both. While in Peru, we wanted to see Machu Picchu. Sitting in the one-engine plane, we were given a small tube to put in our mouth to breathe in oxygen. Upon arrival in Cuzco, the oxygen tube was removed, and we were supposed to be able to
breathe on our own. The sudden change in altitude from sea level to 13,000 feet was difficult. I felt ill, could not catch my breath, said I could not stay, and asked when the plane would be departing. “In three days,” I was told. As there were very few tourists in 1949, the plane only made two trips a week. So we stayed in the only hotel in Cuzco. As our room was on the second floor, the only way I could manage to get upstairs was by crawling up on all fours. The next day in Machu Picchu was not much easier, unbeknownst to me, I was pregnant. Upon arrival back in Lima, I was bleeding and was rushed to a hospital. Due to the altitude, I lost a baby I did not know I was carrying. (Ten years later, during an unpressurized Air Morocco flight, I miscarried again due to the altitude, but by then I had two healthy children.) The four-month honeymoon/business trip was over. We had successfully established several contacts for start-ups of mail-order record clubs, which eventually expanded to a dozen countries and included book clubs. The La Jolla Veterinary Hospital is among the honorees for the upcoming Animaltarian Awards. This event, hosted by the local charity Foundation for Animal Care and Education (FACE), was designed to recognize local “animaltarians,” or San Diego organizations and individuals that are invested and dedicated to the welfare of animals in the community. Ever since its inception in 2006, FACE has raised funds year round to end economic euthanasia and preserve and enhance the quality of life of local pets. Economic euthanasia happens when pet owners cannot afford the cost of treatment needed at the time of a sudden medical condition, and the animal is put to sleep. “When a pet needs treatment, most vet hospitals don’t start treatment unless the pet parents can pay the full cost. If the pet parent can’t come up with the money, the more humane thing to do, versus leaving the pet untreated, is to euthanize that animal. Specifically, that’s what we’re trying to prevent because so many issues are treatable,” explains FACE Executive Director Danae Davis. La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival winners announced Fashion Files Diana Cavagnaro
The 10th annual La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival took place on July 26-27. Talented filmmakers come from around the world for this two-day event. Friday was the opening night reception at The LOT with an art installation by Antonio Contreras and Jacques Silberstein. Saturday morning featured two screenings running simultaneously at the same venue. Afternoon screenings moved to The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center. The red carpet added entertainment this year with the Breton Follies, Sonic Masquerade, and the ballad of Frida Kahlo, “Nothing Sacred” (from the documentary of the same name) sung by Elsa Martinez. The biggest star on the red carpet was Nova, the wolf from the film “Midnight Trip,” which won the IFFA Award for Best Picture; Nova stole the hearts of everyone. Fred Sweet, who is the founder and producer of this amazing event, welcomed the audience. The masters of ceremonies were Tabitha Lipkin and Luke DePron, who got the films roll-

ing. During the event, Lipkin wowed the audience by her many fashion changes wearing designs by Rene Atelier and Ugochi Iwuaba. The feel-good film “Princess” presented diversity in fashion and took home awards for the Best Message, Best Set Design and Best Actress in a Leading Role (this honor went to Jo Price). Antonio Contreras won Best Documentary for his film “Nothing Sacred” about the life of Frida Kahlo. His film “The Falling Leaves” was awarded Best Hairstyling to Tony Callejas Herebia. The highlight of the evening was the musical performance
of “Autumn Leaves” by the incredible vocalist Carmelia Toot Bell. The crowd was mesmerized. The film “Denying Beauty” took home two awards: Best Makeup and Best Director by Rossano B. Maniscalchi. “Denying Beauty” was filmed in the Tenuta de Artimino, which is on the estate of the Villa Medicea and surrounded by the breathtaking Tuscan countryside. The film “Azalys,” by Anastasia Ruiz and Arthur Choupin, was about a gemologist who went on a mystical journey for the answer to his stone. Benjamin Bismuth took home Best Actor in a Leading Role for
this one. Best Fashion was awarded to “French Deal.” “Isabelle” was awarded Best Narration, “Cry” had amazing scenery and was awarded Best Cinematography, and “Package” was awarded Best Creative Concept. This film had the audience in stitches. Best Art Direction went to “Patron Saint Museum Test” and Best Visual Effect went to the campy film “Alien Adventures in Mercury.” The beautiful sounds of “Out Of Sync” took home the Best Music Award. Best Accessories went to “Film Me,” Best Cast Ensemble went to “Initiation,” and Best Jewelry went to “Senses.” The techno-age film “Prada-Nylon Farm” won for Best Supporting Role Fashion Brand, “The Flourish” won for Best Costume Design, and “Chasing Current” won Best Editing with its beautiful underwater scenes. “Nouvelle Vague” took home the award for Best Sound Design. While swimming with sharks might seem like an aggressive form of leisure for the faint of heart, the naturalists at Birch Aquarium want you to know that floating above pregnant female leopard sharks resting along the ocean floor is about as safe as you can get. From June to December every year, thousands of these docile creatures migrate to the warm waters of La Jolla Shores Beach to speed up their gestation process. While the number of sharks this year has not yet been recorded, Birch Aquarium Education Specialist Delanie Medina said it’s already more than previous years. “We had an El Nino in 2015, so that
changes the water temperature here,” she said. “ We actually didn’t see as many [sharks] aggregating on our coastline. Some scientists believe that could have been because all the water was warmer than usual, so that spot in front of The Marine Room wasn’t really a hot spot for them. “But this year, we’ve actually seen it bounce back to a more normal aggregation year where we do see them concentrated there.” It’s long been a mystery as to when the sharks started visiting La Jolla Shores Beach in the summer, and it wasn’t until 2013 that anyone knew why. Scripps Institution of Oceanography’s Andy Nosal researched the migration and determine that 97 percent of the sharks that visited were
pregnant females drawn to the warm, calm waters of the area. “He was able to discover it by tracking them acoustically,” Medina said. “He would put transmitters along the coastline and attach acoustic tags to the leopard sharks through a fish-and-release sort of method.” Once scientists realized the population was mostly pregnant females, swimming above them became a lot less scary and a lot more magical. “Of course when we think of sharks, we think of the larger apex predators who are at the top of their food chain, like a great white,” Medina sad. “But [leopard sharks] are what we call benthic sharks, so they’re bottom feeders.” Bottom feeders who aren’t looking for human flesh, but rather benthic in-
vertebrates like crabs, shrimp, worms and pretty much anything else that can be found on the ocean floor. While leopard sharks can grow up to 7 feet long, the ones that come to La Jolla are typically 5 to 6 feet in length, according to Medina. Small, calm, worm-eating, pregnant female sharks are not the things horror movies are made of, which is why snorkel tours during leopard shark season have become so popular at Birch Aquarium. “What we tell kids is that the sharks that come to this spot are pregnant animals. So if you think of any type of pregnant animal, you know they’re looking to rest during the daytime. And we’re not anywhere on their list of prey.” Birch Aquarium’s Shark Snorkels take place from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. every
Saturday and Sunday from July through September. Participants must be at least 10 years old, have intermediate swimming ability and supply their own gear. Previous snorkeling experience is recommended and pre-purchased is required. Cost is $25 for Birch Aquarium members and $30 for nonmembers. From My Garden: Cleomes —blooming ‘spiders’ for your garden this summer BY LINDA MARRONE | LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS
I've admired photographs of cleome flowers gracing cottage-style garden borders, but I've never included them in my annual/perennial border until I came upon them growing in 5-gallon pots at Home Depot this past June. By June, all of the spring wild flowers I planted last January from seed had faded and these tall plants with their eye-catching "spider-like" flowers were just what I needed to add a bunch of color and height to my summer garden. Commonly known as "spider flowers," this old-fashioned flowering plant has been a favorite garden flower since Victorian times. A prolific reseeding annual, which means the plant dies back at years end, but new plants grow from the seeds that fall to the ground the following season. Cleomes thrive in most soils, as long as they are welldrained. Once established, they don't require a lot of water and can

be planted along with companion plants that also have low watering
needs. They prefer a sunny location, but can tolerate partial shade,
especially in areas that have strong hot afternoon sun. If planted in too shady of an area, their stems will grow long and lanky and they may not produce as many flowers, or none at all. Blooming in the summer, cleome flowers come in shades of pink, lavender or white and the plant itself can grow up to 4-5 feet high. There are also new dwarf varieties that only grow 2-3 feet in height. As the plant grows, you can pinch off its bottom growth and lower leaves if you want it to grow taller, or prune the center growth for a more bushy plant. Deadhead most of the flowers as they fade, but leave a few on the plant and let them go to seed to plant for next season, or let the seeds fall into the garden — once you have a cleome, you will always have them in your garden. This late in the season, you may not find blooming cleome plants at garden centers, but you can purchase cleome seeds to plant for next season. Plant the seeds outdoors in
late winter or early spring. Cleome seeds take about 10 to 14 days to germinate and they need sunlight to do so. Press the seeds very lightly into the soil, keeping them mostly exposed, and water frequently, so that the soil stays moist while they take hold. As the tiny plants grow, thin them out and replant them about 12 to 18 inches apart. Fertilize with a balanced organic fertilizer as they mature to encourage growth. Cleomes usually bloom about 75 days after they begin growing. Both the tall and dwarf varieties also do well as container plants. It seems that all my favorite plants and flowers attract butterflies, bees and hummingbirds and cleomes will keep your garden dancing with these creatures all summer long. I've also read that the somewhat unpleasant smell from the cleome leaves will keep unwanted pests away, or maybe the flowers appearance makes the pests believe they are really huge spiders!

Nine La Jolla projects have been nominated for an award from the 43rd annual Orchids and Onions program, an educational and fundraising measure by the San Diego Architectural Foundation. LUX UTC, Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center, Raised by Wolves, Aveline La Jolla, The Venturi Pergola & Garden, White Sands La Jolla, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, and UCSD’s Ridge Walk Rain Garden and Tata Hall for the Sciences were all nominated for an Orchid Award. A project is determined to be an “orchid” if it exemplifies good placemaking and adds to community character, among other criteria. It’s determined to be an “onion” if it’s a missed opportunity, an eyesore or simply “the opposite of an Orchid,” according to the program’s website. “The goal of the program is to engage the San Diego community in the discussion of the importance of the built environment to their everyday life,” said Laura Warner, Orchids & Onions program cochair. “The physical environment affects everything we do. “It’s not meant to be a beauty contest. The idea behind it is to get people to talk about architecture and environments and think about what makes a space good to be in.
Is it memorable? Is it functional? It is a place you want to return to? Is it easy to use?” Onions, on the other hand, are places you probably wouldn’t visit again. “The opposite of that would be, ‘Hey I can’t find the front door’ or ‘I don’t know what they sell here.’” Voting opened online Aug. 1 and will remain open until Aug. 31. Community residents can go online and vote for their favorite of the 116 San Diego projects nominated for the People’s Choice Awards while a group of jurors will decide the final winners. They will be announced at the annual awards ceremony on Oct. 3. Warner said that La Jolla should be proud of all their nominations. “It has a very nice urban village downtown area which I think [residents] should be proud of,” she said. “It’s a nice environment to walk around and live in." According to people within the community, White Sands, La Jolla is a good example of that. The retirement community at 7450 Olivetas Ave., was nominated for an Orchid specifically for its interior design, which was just upgraded during a $20 million renovation in 2017. The remodel included interior upgrades to its West Campus such as the lobby, the former library and

A bistro, a dog wash area and a bar in the oceanfront main lounge were also added. “We had a theme of coastal elegance,” said Lorraine Durran, director of Buildings and Grounds at White Sands. “We took that throughout all of our corridors. So we upgraded all of the quarters with new finishes, everything form lighting, paint, doors and floor-
ing, beautiful new art. Our beauty shop, our game room, all of those were updated and beautified." While Durran said White Sands was honored to be nominated for an Orchid, the real prize lies in the appreciation of the community’s residents. “They were very, very excited,” Durran said. “They lived through a year and a half of construction

so they were real troopers through the whole process.
