The San Francisco based e-commerce company recently announced that it has doubled its local coverage area to include 11 new zip codes since launching in the region this past July. In a town where corporate-owned coffee shops are vehemently opposed and locally-owned cafés are vigorously supported, Val's Coffee Corner in Ocean Beach has emerged as a neighborhood favorite. Owned and operated by Valeria (Val) Fiorini, an experienced barista who has prepared the brewed concoctions for Obecian’s since 2001, Val’s, located at 2244 Bacon St., represents a dream come true for the Brazilian-born coffee entrepreneur. “I had wanted to buy this place for years, but when it came up for sale I was not ready, and I had a 9-monthold baby,” Forini said. “I thought it was a crazy idea, but I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to own my own shop, so I bought it.” With limited financial resources and an abundance of creativity, the Sao Paolo native set out to create a unique coffee shop, where she could highlight Brazilian food products and culture. The rest of Val’s menu includes fruit and green smoothies, pastries, bagels, croissants and a number of savory options that are healthy and easy to eat on the run. “I'm proud to be Brazilian and I enjoy the things that I grew up eating,” Fiorini said. “I can now make all of the decisions and serve a good product that I’m proud of.” According to Fiorini, many coffee shops, such as Starbucks, use a super automatic espresso machine that, with a press of a button, makes a premeasured cup of coffee, which she feels contains too much water, and lacks flavor. She added that corporate coffee shops are more expensive and impersonal. She said that when locals go to a café that many want to stop and talk with a barista who knows their name and what they drink. “I'm very personal with people,” she said. “I try to make everyone's day a little better by talking to them as a friend, and making them laugh, so that they can leave with a great cup of coffee and a smile on their face.” Although she only intended on staying in the United States for a few months, Fiorini’s coffee career started in OB at a place called Ciggi’s on Voltaire, which is now Tiki Port. In 2004, she left to work at Café Bella, which is located a block away from Val’s Coffee Corner. In January, she left to open her own shop and began doing business in April. After leaving Café Bella, rumors began circulating that Val had retired and moved back to Brazil. Point Loma group continues conversation of race relations with ongoing forums BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON

Racial relations is a hot topic. It's a subject some would rather avoid. For Continuing the Conversation (CTC), a Peninsula group formed in 2013 whose vision is “a racism-free society through transformed hearts and minds,” it's the “staple” of ongoing dialogue. On Wednesday nights in October from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m., CTC is sponsoring Talk Race Forums at Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church, 2128 Chatsworth Blvd. The series continues Oct. 19 and 26. Forum participants will learn about

Former Border Patrol agent convicted of sex with minor A jury Thursday convicted a former Border Patrol agent of having sexual relations with a 17-year-old girl in a Mission Bay hotel in 2015, and he was immediately jailed. The same jury acquitted Daniel Alfredo Spear, 46, of three counts of furnishing cocaine to a minor and a charge of sexual penetration of an intoxicated minor. He was convicted of oral copulation of a minor, digital penetration of a minor, and taking nude pictures of her with his cellphone at the Mission Bay hotel in October 2015. His attorney said two of the four not guilty verdicts involved alleged incidents at Spear’s home in Lemon Grove. San Diego Superior Court Judge David Rubin remanded Spear into jail at the request of Deputy District Attorney Marisa Di Tillio. Sentencing was set for Nov. 18. Di Tillio said Spear faces a maximum sentence of four years and four months in state prison. He will likely have to register as a sex offender once he is paroled, she said. “He’s very disappointed. His wife is very disappointed,” said his attorney Kerry Armstrong. “He maintains she (the victim) made it all up. She had a crush on him,” said Armstrong. “When he refused to leave his wife for her, she made the allegations.” Charges were filed Jan. 7, and Spear was terminated from the Border Patrol about six weeks after the charges were filed. He worked for the Border Patrol for 18 years. The girl was a friend of Spear’s daughter. Spear denied all the charges during his trial testimony. Jurors deliberated four hours over two days before reaching their verdicts. Armstrong said it was possible that Spear could be placed on probation instead of being sent to prison. The subject will be looked at from the Biblical perspective of diversity, attempting to come up with thoughtful solutions to racial issues. Classes are open to all people regardless of race or religious affiliation. “The focus however will mostly be on the African-American and CaucasianAmerican populations within a Christian context,” said CTC spokesperson Dr. Carla Staybolt. Staybolt noted CTC predates the

recent resurfacing of racial issues surrounding nationwide incidents of African-Americans shot by Caucasian-American police. “Our group has been continuing the conversation (about racism) for the last three years,” said Staybolt, noting the idea for talking about race “grew out of a course on racism at Point Loma Presbyterian Church.” Staybolt said some surprising — and shocking — incidents have been related at Point Loma Presbyterian. “We had an African-American man who told a story about living in the South, who cut a deal with a local white group to leave town, preventing his being lynched,” she said

New trial date for Marine accused of 2nd-degree murder of students BY NEAL PUTNAM | THE BEACON

A new trial date of Feb. 14, 2017 was set for Jason Riley King, who is accused of two counts of seconddegree murder in the deaths of two UCSD medical students while allegedly driving drunk in a headon crash. King, 23, appeared before San Diego Superior Court Judge Joan Weber on Wednesday and waived his right again to have a speedy trial. Anne Baldock, 24, of La Jolla, and Madison Cornwell, 23, of Mission Viejo, were both killed May 15, 2015 following the 1:40 a.m. collision on state Route 163 when King drove his truck the wrong way and struck the car driven by Cornwell. The next hearing will be on Nov.

17 when his lawyers will seek to dismiss the murder charges in a motion hearing before Weber. King is also charged with two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and jurors will be presented with a choice of convicting him of murder, manslaughter, both, or neither. He is also charged with causing great bodily injury to three other injured students. The prosecutor said King was partying that night with other Marines at a hotel in Mission Beach. She said his friends tried repeatedly to stop him from driving. King, who was a U.S. Marine at the time, was seriously injured in the crash himself. King has pleaded not guilty and remains in jail on $3 million bail.

between African Americans and police in American society, Staybolt replied, “We all have iPhones and take videos, and I think that (technology) has taken it (altercations) up a notch as we have webcams now in police cars and on police officers,” she said. The San Diego Gulls open their second American Hockey League season tomorrow night, Oct. 14, at what will likely be a sold-out Valley View Casino Center. The Gulls, top affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League, were an immediate success last year after the Ducks purchased the former Norfolk Admirals franchise and moved the team west to facilitate player movement between the teams. Only the AHL's Hershey Bears outdrew the Gulls last season as the new hometown team averaged 8,675 attendance per game at the Valley View Casino Center and raised eyebrows around the AHL with the enthusiasm and hockey knowledge displayed by fans. Last year's team, under returning head coach Dallas Eakins, thrilled San Diego's faithful with a record of 39 wins, 23 losses, four overtime losses and two shootout losses, good for 84 points in the Pacific Division standings to finish nine points behind the champion and

The Peninsula Beacon has learned Point Loma High administrators have quietly hired a new varsity basketball head coach. Josh Aros, a veteran coach in the Pointer program, was selected over a field of five candidates according to sources. He replaces Chris Brisco, who spent eight years at the helm. Aros, 28, has been coaching basketball at PLHS since he was just 18, including two years heading the freshman team, seven as junior varsity head coach and last year as a varsity assistant to Brisco. Aros is also a varsity assistant in football. "I'm very excited to take over the program," Aros said, "And continue the legacy started by my dad and coach Brisco." Baja Chefs on the Point The Point Loma Optimist sponsored Baha Chefs presentation will be held from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, on Sunday, October 16, 2016, at the NTC Foundation Gallery, Barracks 17 Plaza, Liberty Station. Jim Seman and his committee have organized another spectacular happening at which top Baja Chefs will create a dining experience mirroring Valle Guadalupe. the students there are primarily from families headed by enlisted military personnel, who simply cannot contribute the hundreds of thousands of dollars contributed by parents at the other Point Loma cluster elementary schools. If it's true high school coaches schedule weaker opponents for Homecoming, then Mira Mesa's staff grossly underestimated Point Loma's Pointers. Playing perhaps their first game of the season with all phases of the game performing well, the Pointers destroyed the Marauders 45-14 last week, spoiling the night for a large crowd of students and returning alums who watched largely in silence. But there was plenty to cheer about for the Pointer faithful, who braved Friday night rush hour traffic on the I-15 to watch their team score in every quarter of the dominating victory. "It was a fun game," said Pointer head coach Mike Hastings afterwards. "We watched the film and knew we were pretty strong up front and liked what we could do against this team." The victory left the Pointers with a 4-2 record and 1-0 in Western League play. Mira Mesa drops to 1-5 and 0-1. The Pointers racked up some sizable numbers. Quarterback Kyle Grady competed 10 of 15 attempts for 189 yards (18.9 average) and a touchdown. Gabe Hall caught three passes for 39 yards, Patrick Rutledge also snagged three for 75 yards and Josh Ball snared two for 41 yards and a

touchdown. Malik Moore had one catch for 31 yards and JL Skinner caught one for three yards. Running backs Ball and Antonio Quintanilla each had big nights. Ball ran 19 times for 168 yards (8.8 average) and scored three touchdowns. Quintanilla had 169 yards on nine carries (18.8 average) and scored once. Sophomore Cameron Auva'a had two carries for 44 yards and the final touchdown. It was a night of offense as the Pointers rolled up a remarkable 583 yards on 52 offensive plays, an average of 11.2 per snap. The Marauders tallied 311 yards of their own, but had trouble reaching the end zone. The Pointers wasted no time establishing control as Quintanilla took a handoff on the game's first play and sprinted 60 yards downfield before being caught two yards short of the goal. Ball scored on the next play for a 7-0 lead after less than two minutes of play. Ball's 50-yard run, where he broke several tackle attempts, gave the Pointers a 14-0 lead in the second quarter and just 1:58 later, Quintanilla went up the middle, broke free and outran defenders to the goal for a 72-yard scoring run. Even when the Marauders stopped them the Pointers tacked on three points when kicker Oscar Borjon's 34-yard field goal was good, giving the Pointers a 24-0 halftime lead. Ball scored twice more in the third

period, first on a short run on the opening drive after the break, knocking a defender back as he crossed the goal on a drive that consumed half the quarter, and again on a wideopen 23-yard pass from Grady. "I thought Kyle (Grady) had a great night throwing the ball," Hastings said, also praising Ball, Quintanilla, Borjon and his offensive line, which "did a great job up front." The Pointers have their work cut out for them in the final road game of the regular season as they visit powerhouse league foe Madison, a team that knocked off the county's previous top-rated team St. Augustine 5642 last week. "Our kids are hungry and want to play them, and a good week of practice will help us give everything we've got," Hastings said. The game kicks off tomorrow (Oct. 14) at 6:30 p.m. at Madison.

SeaWorld San Diego recently broke ground on a multmillion-dollar attraction to take visitors on an exploration of Earth's seven seas. Ocean Explorer is scheduled to open in late spring 2017 on the southeast end of the theme park. According to SeaWorld officials, the new park attraction will combine multiple aquariums, rides and digital technology aimed at providing guests with a sense of adventure while inspiring them to protect the oceans. “I’m extremely excited about Ocean Explorer and I know our guests, of all ages, are going to love this fun, interactive and educational new area of the park,” said Marilyn Hannes, SeaWorld San Diego’s park president. “The opportunity to see and learn about some of the ocean’s most fascinating creatures, coupled with a mix of distinctive rides and activities, will give our visitors a meaningful experience only SeaWorld can create.” At Ocean Explorer guests will have the opportunity to learn about: • Mini submarines: the signature ride of the attraction, will turn visitors into researchers on a mission to collect data and learn how they can help animals during a three-minute experience including an onboard digital navigation dashboard. • The heart and destination of Ocean Explorer will be a series of undersea research bases, or pods, housing specially-designed aquari-

ums and interactive activities displaying unique as well as elusive ocean animals. Visitors will come eyeto-eye with: Giant Pacific octopuses, Japanese spider crabs (largest arthropod in the world) and Moray eels. • Enriching educational displays, technologies and graphics will be key components of each pod. In addition to the mini subs, Ocean Explorer will also feature: An exhilarating wave swinger ride with chairs suspended from the tentacles of a giant jelly; an Octopus swing ride; A Jump-around submarine ride; and a Bounce/drop ride. “This newest, fully immersive attraction at SeaWorld San Diego is the next chapter in creating experiences that can create both wonder and curiosity for the oceans,” said Brian Morrow, SeaWorld Parks Entertainment’s vice president of theme park experience design. “Park guests will trek through sea-base stations, make special connections with incredible animals and discover how they too can take action to protect the oceans.” “I can’t be more thrilled about Ocean Explorer,” said Mike Price, SeaWorld San Diego’s assistant curator of fishes. “We will give our visitors the chance to come eye-to-eye with amazing animals, some of which have never been seen at the park before. “We will also give everyone a variety of different vantage points to view the animals by taking them around

SD Airport achieves Airport Carbon Accreditation San Diego International Airport (SAN) has been certified through the Airports Council International’s Airport Carbon Accreditation program. BEACH STYLERS There are few images that are more classic Californian than that of a couple throwing a disc on the beach. On any given weekend, OBecians Dave and Amy Schiller are wowing passersby with their freestyle disc playing. He spins the disc towards her and she keeps it flying and orbiting around herself, dancing with it until she spins it back toward him for his turn of playing. Then the two of them come closer together for a show-stopping combination trick. The Schillers are world-class disc players. Together, they have earned seven world titles in the mixed pairs division of the world championship. “To win, you need to know how to plan and choreograph, have high difficulty, practice with your partner and have complete solid execution during the competitive rounds. Sometimes it works out,” said Amy, who had started playing in the mid1980s with College Ultimate. In August, Amy won the Women’s Division title at FPA World Championship in flying disc freestyle in Brooklyn, N.Y. She has won the world champion title 14 times. In competition, disc players do three to five minute routines to music with one or two partners. Judges are looking for a variety of tricks, evaluating the difficulty, con-

sidering artistic interpretation, and how well the tricks are executed. “It’s a sport and an art,” said Dave. The dance-type moves that he and Amy make during a free-styling session is calling “jamming,” a type of improvisation. The dance with the disc involves much more than toss-

ing and spinning it to each other. “I can get a little vertigo when I play on the beach because of the way the water is moving on the sand, and so I have to take that into consideration when I play,” she said. “And any sand on the disc causes friction, which will slow the disc down,” said Dave, who started freestyle

disc playing in 1980 in Dallas. He had learned the sport from a friend in high school. “We played music together, but when I saw him play Frisbee, I knew that was something I really wanted to do,” he said. Amy and Dave met for the first time at the U.S. Open tournament

in La Mirada. She was a top overall player, playing all the disc sports, while he was an aspiring freestyle specialist. “We got serious about competing together in 1994. Shortly after we got serious about a lot more,” she said, smiling. It was 1981 at the Texas State Championship when Dave began competing. Since then, he has won a total of 20 world titles. The Schillers thrive on the interaction of the disc community, as they call it. Ultimate and golf Frisbee have grown significantly in the number of players and venues, with freestyle shrinking in the United States but growing in Europe. “It's been amazing to travel to Italy, Sweden, Norway and Germany to play and compete and meet younger players who are into it. We call ourselves ‘The Jammily’ because we are a diverse bunch and we take care of each other and adore one another just like family,” said Amy. “We love to play and we play as often as possible,” Amy said.

LIFESTYLE Point Loma High grad opens photo exhibit on Cesar Chavez at University of San Diego BY SCOTT HOPKINS | THE BEACON

An honored alumni of Point Loma High School has received further accolades with the opening of a photographic exhibition covering his years as an assistant to farm labor organizer Cesar Chavez. Carlos LeGerrette, Class of 1961, who became a member of the school's Hall of Fame last year, took hundreds of photographs during 12 years working with Chavez in the 1960s and 1970s as they traveled about organizing the National Farm Workers Association (later known as the United Farm Workers) to gain better working conditions and compensation for agricultural workers. Now, about 65 of LeGerrette's most powerful images of Chavez's historic efforts and private moments have been selected for a current exhibit at the University of San Diego. Also on display are artifacts including the camera used to record the images. "The Farmworkers Movement Through the Lens of Carlos LeGerrette" runs through Nov. 18 at the campus Fine Art Gallery in the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice. Hours are Mondays through Fridays from noon to 5 p.m.

LeGerrette is scheduled to speak on campus Nov. 10, discussing the exhibit and more. The project was conceived by Alberto López Pulido, PhD, professor of ethnic studies, in collaboration with Jeffrey Mark Burns, PhD, director of the Center for Catholic Thought and Culture at USD working closely with LeGerrette. Also planned in the future is an undergraduate honors course, a publication and a broad array of public programs in association with the current exhibit.

LeGerrette met his wife Linda at Mesa College and married in 1966. The two have been an inseparable example of energy and action ever since. While at Mesa, they were mentored by Cesar Chavez and Sol Price and started a student club that was to become MEChA. They were honored with the college's 2014 "Distinguished Alumni Award." The LeGerrettes founded the Cesar Chavez Service Clubs in local schools in 2001. Carlos and Linda are both from families that have been in San Diego since before 1900.

A Louisiana native who grew up in a small town outside Houston, Sean Patrick Flanery packed his possessions into his car one day and headed to L.A hoping to become a star. But unlike so many others who failed, he succeeded. Only he went there to become a playwright – and ended up an actor. Flanery has several TV and movie films to his credit. He is perhaps best known for starring in the movie “Powder,” and co-starring in the cult classic “The Boondock Saints.” Invited down by Point Loma High School theater instructor Anthony Palmiotto to talk to students about movies and acting, Flanery, who was in town for the San Diego International Film Festival, took a break from a current film shoot in Albuquerque to talk about himself and his career. “I'm just a working actor,” the 51year-old Flanery told PLHS students at an impromptu take-off on the “Actor's Studio” TV talk show Sept. 29 in the school's auditorium. As his story goes, Flanery was attending the University of St. Thomas in Houston, when he saw a beautiful girl leaving a campus building and decided to drop an English class and sign up for "whatever the hell they were teaching in that building.” The building was the university's

theater department, and the class was acting. Through his theater studies, Flanery penned a piece of children's theater that he later took with him in hopes of actually producing the play. He got approached by an agent to do a Kellogg's Corn Pops commercial that led to more commercials and then TV/film roles, including the title role in George Lucas' “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.” The rest is history. Asked about his profession, Flanery confided, “I haven't had a 'real' job in 27 years.” He noted a “job” is something you wouldn't do unless you were paid. Flanery's favorite role? “For creative fulfillment, it's ‘Pow-

der,’” he said of his portrayal of Jeremy “Powder” Reed, a young man catapulted ahead evolutionarily by a tragic accident, allowing him to read others' minds and feelings. Flanery noted he's not a “method actor who has to stay in character.” He said for him, it's often the quality of the script that leads him to take on the role. With “Powder,” for instance, Flanery pointed out the script was so good that taking on the role was practically a no-brainer. “There are some roles, for me at least, that allow you to relax and enjoy the moment,” he said, likening even his least-favorite acting roles to “your least- favorite flavor of chocolate.”

Getting back to the PLHS’ Q&A session, when asked about his favorite swear word, Flanery paused noting, “My grandaddy was an old school Louisiana guy who got mad if you used profanity, especially in front of girls.” Queried about his most, and least, favorite words, Flanery's responses were “passion” and “apathy.” “I guess what gets me out of bed at night is the challenge of becoming just a little bit better than you were when you woke up,” he said, adding he can't relate whatsoever to people who “don't care.” Flanery's favorite sound was “kids giggling,” adding “there's something so pure and beautiful about an

untainted life.” A father, Flanery told students, “At some point in your lives, that's going to become the most important thing.” Hard pressed to choose another profession other than his own, Flanery said he might consider pursuing the sport of race car driving. One sport he has pursued, obviously something he's passionate about when he speaks of it, is martial arts. Off camera, Flanery is a high-ranking martial artist having earned his black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from the Renzo Gracie lineage in 2008. He owns his own BJJ academy called Hollywood Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in West Hollywood, where he trains regularly when his film schedule allows. Flanery gets animated when a couple of PLHS students, who are studying Jiu Jitsu, ask him about it. Scuffling as if in a fight, he talks about grappling at close range, and by how he describes it, with verbal and body language, you know he knows what's he's talking about. “Self-defense is a life skill,” concluded the actor. One student, an aspiring filmmaker, asked Flanery if he had any advice. “Be good,” counseled Flanery. “Make sure your dream is an achievable one.” Offering the student some encouragement, Flanery told him, “Continue to stay focused: You'll get there.”

Legacy of Point Loma producer lives on with Chris Brinker award BY TERRI STANLEY | THE BEACON

Honoring the life of Chris Brinker became a mission statement for his family and a way to support Brinker’s work for his many friends. The gifted director and producer was 42 years old when he died after suffering a brain aneurysm on Feb. 8 2013. Born and raised in the seaside community of Point Loma, Brinker is remembered as a pos-

itive, supportive and caring producer whose intense love of making movies spilled over onto all who knew him. Best known for the films “The Boondock Saints,” and “The Boondock Saints II,” he was in post-production for his directorial debut “Bad Country,” when his life ended. Chris Brinker’s family and friends turned their tremendous loss into triumph. They created the Chris Brinker Film Founda-

tion (CBFF), a nonprofit that gives academic scholarships to aspiring Point Loma High School filmmakers, and the Chris Brinker award, given every year by the San Diego International Film Festival, to a firsttime director. At the helm of the foundation are Brinker’s sisters, Brear Brinker Cannarsa, president of the CBFF, and Laura Brinker. After his death they asked themselves how do we pay it forward

and give back to the community, as Chris would have done? With the help of friends who knew the filmmaker and admired the man and his work, they created the foundation to give other filmmakers and artists the opportunity to achieve success in their fields. “Chris was perceived to be very focused and instrumental in launching the careers of a SEE AWARD, Page 18

It’s possible that when it comes to respect, the ukulele is the Rodney Dangerfield of musical instruments. Due to its small size, only having four strings and ease of play, to many folks it’s not much more than a toy, and a limited one at that. Of course in the right hands, such as with the duo of Birdy & The Bow Tie, who perform at the Te Mana Café on Oct. 15, ukulele can be played to virtuoso levels and is the perfect accompaniment for fun and sing-alongs. Comprised of Alison Marae and Wil Forbis, the evening will include a performance of vintage jazz tunes as well as an opportunity for ukulele enthusiasts to join in and strum along. The duo’s name is a nod to the instruments first heyday in the 1920s. “We brainstormed band names and discovered that every name we came up with was taken,” she laughed. “We mostly just wanted a name that represented a duo and had a slightly vintage vibe about it. ‘Bird’ was a slang term for singers of the era and the fellas wore bow ties, so it fit.” For Marae the choice to play ukulele over an another instrument was pragmatic. “I started playing because a friend gave me a ukulele,” she recalled. “I play piano, but wanted something portable that I could accompany myself with when I sang. “I tried the guitar many, many times but my hands are too small. So when I got the ukulele I had already learned some basic chord shapes on the guitar and applying

them to the ukulele was so easy! I was hooked right away and couldn't put it down.” She notes that despite its minimal strings and size there isn’t much of a limit to the types of music that can be played on a ukulele. “Maybe not death metal and rap,” she joked. “But honestly, anything goes these days. There's this group from Australia called Bosko and Honey and they definitely have an edgy sound. Sort of avant-garde ukulele meets hard rock. They're a trip!” Marae considers the ukulele to be easy to play but as with anything, the more a player put into their craft, the more they will get out of it. “You can master anything with practice and patience. And more practice,” she said. The music Forbis and Marae play covers all genres, but there focus is vintage material. “Jazz is a term that gets applied to music from the early

1900s up to modern day.” She said. “What we preform is vintage jazz, which applies to music from the 1920s to the ’40s. You could think of it as the pop music that came right after Dixieland.” The pair have also added some vintage ’50s and ’60s country to their repertoire as well. Birdy & The Bowtie recently returned from a successful West Coast tour, where they found a growing audience for ukulele music. “There’s a lot of interest in ukulele music not only nationwide but also worldwide, particularly in Europe right now,” Forbis said. “We toured France and England about a year ago and had some great shows there.” The pair considers performing music it’s own reward. “Singing and playing music for the elderly and children is my favorite,” Marae said. “I also really enjoy teaching music.” Forbis considers music to be an endless source of inspiration. “It’s just a giant, mysterious world you can never get tired of exploring,” he said. “For instance, lately I’ve been reading a lot about music composed by computers. This is actually something that’s been going on for decades though you don’t hear much about it,” he mused. “The music world is full of surprises.” Marae is particularly pleased to see people of all ages coming together at their performances, especially when the audiences join in. “There is something really wonderful happening when everyone is playing and singing together. Its music therapy, it's community, it's friendships and it's fun,” she said.

Haunted Hallway scares up fun at Silver Gate BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON

You've heard of the haunted house or the haunted castle? Silver Gate Elementary's dads have been improving on something for 13 years that's even more diabolical: the mysterious haunted hallway. The brainchild of Silver Gate parent Bob Sherman, the school's haunted parts include not only a hallway but several classrooms as well, all decked out with the latest and freakiest over-the-top special effects. The Haunted Hallway is part of the annual Harvest Festival at Silver Gate 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21. “It is a huge, elaborate production that is set up over five days,” said Sherman of the eerie event he created when his daughter, in college today, was in kindergarten. “Our event is what inspired the parents over at Loma Portal Elementary.” Loma Portal also converts part of its campus for Halloween and trick or treating, thanks every year to dads donating their time and expertise. “There are several dads who no longer have kids at Silver Gate that come back every year to help,” said Sherman. “We all want to see this tradition continue.” Sherman is also known for his Polar Express floats that for years

were a mainstay in the annual Ocean Beach Christmas Parade. Sherman noted that Silver Gate dads Jim Miller and Kurt Finley have helped him for the last four years to bring the Hallway to life — or death — depending on your perspective. How do you haunt a hallway — or a classroom? “We don't do anything store bought or commercial from a Hal-

loween store,” answered Sherman noting, 13 years ago, that he created some of the scary set work himself at home. “It's all unique stuff,” said Sherman noting there's as much “Disney” as “Frankenstein's lab” in sets created and improved upon annually for the Mysterious Haunted Hallway. Sherman said 10 different scenes

are created in hallways and classrooms, everything from spiders and webs, to graveyards with tombstones and lots and lots of special effects, including several frightening sound tracks with all the attendant bumps, rattles and screams. It's all hyper real. “In the graveyard, we bring in real dead trees and have real leaves with fog and sound effects,” Sherman

said adding one of the big challenges is always to make things scary enough to be entertaining, while not too scary for the especially young or faint of heart. The end result though is that everybody thoroughly enjoys themselves. “People usually are laughing when they come out,” he said. “And some kids go back in and out like six times.” What does Sherman get out of it? Even he's not quite certain. “I was doing this in 2007 when my daughter was here, and nine years later … I'm still doing it,” Sherman said adding his business is a bit slower in October and that he continues to enjoy being a “master of mystery,” articulating the craft of creating faux haunted effects and passing that along to others. “For me it's a nice way to stay involved, and a nice way to do something for the community,” Sherman concluded.

This is something I would really like to achieve.” Recognition of this kind is invaluable to a first time director, often leading to more scripts, bigger budgets and people who will take your phone call. Hamilton is very aware of how fortunate she is to be in the right place at the right time but also insists that it is no accident – yes she caught some breaks but was relentless in her pursuit of making this film. “I went after it like gangbusters, I dove in, wouldn’t take no for an answer – in a way it was insane. I thought it seemed very unlikely to happen at the beginning but it did. Now I am working on a pilot, a feature sci-fi script and am looking for a bigger project that is already out there. I want to be someone who is on a director short list for the bigger blockbusters and the high-quality stories like ‘American Fable.’”

Cannarsa collaborates with Tonya Mantooth, executive and artistic director of the SDIFF, each year to bring in the presenters. Doing the honors for the 2016 Chris Brinker award, actor Sean Patrick Flanery, who worked with Chris on the “Boondock Saints,” and Peter Nelson, a good friend of the late director who is now senior vice president of Worldwide Acquisitions at Sony. “The family is pleased that we continue to carry out Chris’ legacy,” says Mantooth, “and that we give this award during the Tribute to the Stars night. They appreciate the fact that we honor him at this hometown event.” Mantooth was part of the new team that took over the film festival in 2011 and she invited Brinker to sit on an industry panel that was part of the festival. She fondly

remembers his energy and passion for the festival. He was excited about the plans that Mantooth’s team had to raise the level and profile of the festival to represent what San Diego has to offer in the way of culture and the arts. “The Chris Brinker award is the one award that I choose. I identify what I believe are the top three films and then work closely with Jeffrey Lyons, long-time film critic, to choose the finalists. What I am looking for is a first-time director, a director that I believe has taken risks, one that shows great passion and spirit in their work, and also a sophistication, not only from a technical standpoint, but also a creative standpoint.” This year’s Point Loma scholarship recipients, Alexander Allen and Chloe O’Rourke, were each awarded $1,000 scholarships for their work in filmmaking and the arts. And at the recent film festival, this year’s Chris Brinker award went to director Anne Hamilton for her debut feature film, “American Fable,” a fairytale thriller set on a farm in the Midwest. Hamilton, who grew up in the Midwest, went to Yale Law School and became an attorney, practicing in New York. She had been thinking about the story for years and in her late 20s she made the decision to quit the law and pursue her passion for filmmaking. It took her six months to write the script. Two years later her film is playing at a handful of festivals this

Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is kicking off the fall season October 8 with its annual Fall Festival. The museums and merchants in the state park will be richly decorated and will host family friendly games, activities and entertainment reminiscent of an old-fashioned harvest celebration. A pumpkin-carving demonstration will take place from noon to 4 p.m. under a large shade tree in the center of the town plaza. Musical entertainment and face painting will also take place in the central plaza.

Free craft activities will include pumpkin painting, corn shucking, environmentally friendly bird feeders and corn husk dolls in a specially decorated Harvest Home. Participating merchants in the state park will also have craft activities inside their stores. “Fall Festival is a great tradition that celebrates the turning of the seasons and the bounty of the harvest,” said Antionette Fischer of Rust General Store and Bistro who is heading up the event this year. “We want people to come experience an old-fashioned, family-oriented fall

celebration in the fantastic historic setting of the state park.” The activities start at noon and go until 4 p.m. Free parking is available throughout Old Town with extra parking available across Taylor Street in the CalTrans parking lot.

So when Max’s team contacted Julie about his upcoming trip to La Jolla, she told them her story. gestion, “Life’s a Beach.” The result is this epic original art piece that depicts Julie gazing at the ocean and a groovy character in the sky reminiscent of the ’60s poster; perfect for a girl from the ’70s who began her dance with being cool when she plastered up Max’s posters on her

walls. “It reminds us just how small this planet really is and it’s kind of endearing to this... he’s still groovy and I like to think I am too,” she said. Some things are just meant to be. And the evidence is greeting everyone who picks up this edition.

That welcome sign is long gone now, much to the dismay of the border crossers who surely enjoyed being greeted by a bold work of art from an innovative and unique artist. Max has his art up on the walls of many galleries across the country and this month his show opens at La Jolla’s Monarch Arredon Contemporary Art on Girard Avenue. Come to present day and the story of how one of Max’s original designs ended up on our front cover comes full circle. Max will be visiting the La Jolla gallery on Oct. 22 and 23 for a meet the artist event and to collect the creations colored in The Art of Peter Max Coloring Contest. One day a box appeared in Julie Main’s home in Bovill, Idaho full of secret prizes often found in garage sales. Her father had noticed something that sparked his interest in this box, so he paid a couple bucks and hoped that something between its cardboard walls would become the treasure seen in someone else’s trash. But it did far more than that. Not only did the random box contain treasures but it also began a lifetime appreciation of Peter Max’s art for Julie. What Julie’s father didn’t know was that box contained around 50 large posters of Peter Max’s “The Different Drummer” artwork of the ’60s. A 9-year-old Julie was entranced and took the large-sized posters straight to her bedroom where she used them as wall paper. And so the endearing affair began. “There was a stack of the ‘The Different Drummer’ posters, they were like 17 by 22 inches in size and there must have been at least 50 (I put) on my wall and closet... and so I became very familiar with Max because of that experience,” Julie remembered. “I wanted the posters. I was (attracted to) the bold colors. It was the dynamic ’70s. And his art was mod and cool, very groovy. He was the big forthcoming artist in the ’70s with all these dynamic colors, straight lines and clean art.” Fast-forward to 1982, and an older Julie finds herself sitting in a car at the Tijuana border crossing while heading home to San Diego. But there was a reward for her first border crossing experience: The large “Welcome to the USA” sign that greeted everyone into the country was done by Max. For Julie, it made the border wait well worth it. “(When I saw the sign) I thought how cool, I know Peter Max, and I’ve loved him for years just because of the poster incident.”
