Dusty Rhodes Dog Park in Ocean Beach is getting, well, dustier. So much so, that users are beginning to clamor for something more to be done about it. “It basically looks like a rodeo ground,” said Mike Ryan, former vice chair of Peninsula Community Planning Board, who is a frequent user, along with dog Maggie, of Dusty Rhodes' small-dog enclosure.

“Many of us who use the park are fed up with the lack of watering. The city says the watering was cut back due to the drought. Funny thing is, San Diego is always in a drought,” he said. Ryan noted, during water rationing caused by the ongoing drought, that “athletic fields got plenty of water but not the dog parks. Peninsula group approves bike lanes for Wabaska BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON

In September, Peninsula Community Planning Board adopted a preferred alternative for bicycle improvements on Wabaska Drive, as well as getting an update on San Diego International Airport redevelopment. Nicole Burgess, District 2 rep on the City of San Diego Bicycle Advisory Committee, gave a presentation detailing four different options for bicycle improvements on Wabaska Drive between Voltaire Street and Nimitz Boulevard. “These design options are for the road diet bringing it down from four lanes to two,” said Burgess. “We wanted space to put a bike facility, and not just have bikes on the outside of parked cars in a typical bike lane.” Burgess noted two options, numbers three and four, “put bikes on the inside making the vehicles be the buffer, so the bicyclist does not have to go next to fast-moving traffic.” Protected bike lanes have some sort of physical, stationary, vertical separation between moving motor-vehicle traffic and the bike lane. “For Wabaska, this physical barrier will be a variety of parked cars, bollards, flex posts, and maybe even

some planters,” Burgess said noting an unprotected bike path “is just paint and has no physical barrier. In these types of facilities, cyclists must ride next to moving vehicles and be cautious of door-zone conflicts. A protected bikeway is safer, more comfortable, and therefore increases bike ridership.” “We are supporting options 3 or 4 to provide a protection there,” concluded Burgess, adding, “There really aren't that many homes in that area.” Burgess said it's hoped introducing bike improvements on Wabaska will “provide a model for the city.” She noted the bicycle infrastructure improvement project will dovetail neatly into railing and other improvements being planned on the Voltaire Street bridge nearby. A motion was made to approve option 4 and PCPB's vote was 9-2-1 in favor. Keith Wilschetz, director of airport planning and noise mitigation at San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, updated community planners on a long-range $2.2 billion replacement plan, approved about a year ago, at the airport's Terminal 1, opened in 1967. The plan is to replace all of that terminal's 19 gates within 10 years, adding more capacity in

future phases. From the audience, Dr. Lilah Schmidt expressed fear, following testimony given at a recent Airport Authority board meeting, that airport arrivals are going to be overwhelming, increasing by several hundred thousand during the next few years. Wilschetz replied the airport has approximately 314,000 arrivals annually today noting “that will go up to 800,000 between now and 2025, about a 120 percent increase, just over double what we have today” utilizing the airport's lone airplane runway, he said.

In other action: • Jack Straw from the mayor's office fielded group and audience questions about proposed changes to the city's municipal code governing the 30-foot height restriction in the coastal area. Work on a controversial condominium development on Emerson Street in Roseville was recently temporarily halted, because area residents complained the project had an extra story, exceeded 30 feet, because of the way its height was measured, which constituted a loophole in city regulations.

NEWS Mid-Coast Trolley project receives $1 billion federal grant BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON

News of a $1 billion federal grant to help build the 11-mile trolley extension from the Old Town Transit Center to the University City community was greeted as a windfall by the San Diego Association of Governments. “This is the largest single grant we've every gotten for a light-rail project,” said Gary Gallegos, executive director of San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), the region's transportation planning agency. Pointing out the overall cost of the trolley project is a little more than $2 billion, Gallegos noted, “You can't build a $2 billion project for $1 billion,” underscoring the significance of federal funding. Recently, an agreement was signed to provide 50 percent of the funds to extend service in the MidCoast Trolley Extension from Old Town to UCSD, Westfield UTC Transit Center and the University City community. The roughly five-year construction project will extend the existing Blue Line, building nine new stops along the north coast of

San Diego including near Mission Beach, Pacific Beach near Balboa Avenue, the VA Medical Center, the UCSD campus, and the dense residential and commercial areas along Genesee Avenue. “The Mid-Coast Trolley will bring fast, reliable transit to the places where it’s most needed, including our largest research university and biggest employment center (UTC),” said Ron Roberts, SANDAG chair and San Diego County Board of Supervisors chair. “At the same time, it is an outstanding example of our ability to leverage the region’s local TransNet dollars to bring in outside money to complete major transportation projects.” The San Diego region was able to garner the 50 percent match for the Mid-Coast Trolley in large part because it has a dedicated local source of funding that provided the other 50 percent match for the project. Revenues from TransNet, the existing countywide half-cent sales tax for transportation, are covering half of the approximately $2.1 billion total project cost. Addressing criticism that light-rail is an expensive transportation alter-

native, Gallegos replied, “It's true light-rail has high up-front capital costs. It's obviously cheaper to buy a bus than build a trolley rail line. But in the long haul, the rail line is more cost-effective over its life cycle. If you buy a new bus you have to hire a new driver. With a trolley, you can always just add more cars.” There are other reasons for choosing light-rail as a viable transportation alternative, Gallegos noted. A ceremonial signing of the Full Funding Grant Agreement – dedicating approximately $1 billion to the Mid-Coast project over the next 10 years subject to annual Congressional approval – took place recently on the campus of UCSD where the future Pepper Canyon Trolley station will be built. As part of the ceremony, Roberts was handed a symbolic $1 billion check. Gallegos said groundbreaking for the 11-mile, Mid-Coast Trolley extension is on Oct. 22. “Construction will take about 56 months,” he said adding, “This is considered to be a mega-project with a lot of bridge and concrete work, and the railway going across freeways.”

The good news though is that “for the most part, the project is in the public right-of-way,” Gallegos added. SANDAG's chief said the trolley extension will be an important transportation cross-connector. He noted the Trolley Blue Line extension will connect the San Diego region's two largest employment centers (downtown and UTC) with the rail networks in South Bay and East County. Pre-construction activities for the Mid-Coast project, primarily the relocation of underground utilities out of the project alignment, are already under way. Once the extension is built, transit riders will enjoy a one-seat ride from San Ysidro to University City. According to SANDAG, construction of the Mid-Coast project is expected to produce more than 14,000 new local jobs. Even after construction is over, the Mid-Coast project will have an estimated $116 million of annual economic impact on the region by reducing congestion, reducing parking needs, and increasing access to jobs. The MidCoast corridor supports more than 325,000 jobs. Planners estimate the

trolley-extension project will provide more than 20,000 new transit trips every weekday. “The grand vision is to try and give San Diegans more transportation options and better choices,” Gallegos said. “This gives San Diego commuters working in the two largest employment centers something to do other than just drive (alone).”

Midway Community Planning Group in September got updates on a renewed effort to re-establish a Business Improvement District (BID), as well as agreeing to support closure of Moore Street at a troublesome intersection. Midway Community Planning Group (MCPG) board member Gil Kennedy said progress is being made networking with local businesses in an ad hoc committee to resurrect the old North Bay BID that has been inactive for years. “We're in talks to create a BID and a Maintenance Assessement District,” said Kennedy adding there was a consensus on what the priorities should be for a new BID. “The three common themes shared were security, trash and outreach,” he said noting other items including hardscaping, landscaping, signage and panhandling on medians were also discussed.

Kennedy added BID creation is a long process. “Two years is about the best-case scenario to get this done,” he said. “It's worth considering,” commented MCPG chair Cathy Kenton noting one of the ad hoc members should take charge of the Maintenance Assessement District formation effort. “I'm willing to act as the lead for the formation of this Maintenance Assessement District,” Kennedy replied. At the request of longtime Midway District nursery owner Walter Andersen, MCPG considered a proposal to close the gap in the island of El Camino Real at the beginning of I-8 at Moore Street. San Diego Airport starts construction on Terminal 2 Parking Plaza The Terminal 2 Parking Plaza building is now under way as nearly 100 elected officials, Airport Authority board members, business and community leaders and construction team members celebrated the groundbreaking last week at San Diego International Airport. The cutting-edge Parking Plaza will be located in front of Terminal 2 and will have three floors with approximately 3,000 parking stalls. It will replace the existing surface

parking lot for Terminal 2. “San Diego International Airport travelers spoke and we listened,” said Thella F. Former SeaWorld manager gets 30 months for fraud BY NEAL PUTNAM | THE BEACON

A former manager at SeaWorld who embezzled $818,000 from the company was sentenced Sept. 23 to 30 months in federal prison for wire fraud and filing a false tax return. Wilfred David Jobin-Reyes, 48, who is known professionally as Sebastian Jobin, was ordered by U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey Miller to repay SeaWorld the $818,000 he took from them. He worked for SeaWorld for 17 years. Miller also ordered Jobin to repay $177,000 to his former roommate, whose identity he used to get credit

cards to spend at casinos and trips. Jobin has reached an agreement with the Internal Revenue Service to pay $207,000 as a penalty for not declaring his total income to the IRS. Jobin will get credit for the seven months he has spent in prison since his arrest in Dallas where he had fled after SeaWorld investigators determined they had paid money to a phony company that Jobin owned for non-existent merchandise. Jobin claimed the firm was a real company that sold trinkets and that some of his merchandise was for sale on a consignment basis in a Point Loma business. SeaWorld

could only document one delivery of merchandise over eight years. “I take full responsibility for my actions,” said Jobin. Jobin read a letter about previous difficulties in his life, such as being molested by a teacher 30 years ago and developing an addiction to gambling and work. He said being fired from SeaWorld was his “biggest relief” so the fraud wouldn’t continue. Miller told him bringing up unrelated things seemed to him like a “dissertation of excuses” rather than acceptance of responsibility. “You were living a pretty high life … a pattern of conduct you were very

comfortable with,” said Miller. “This was a highly sophisticated, carefully orchestrated scheme over a long period of time,” said Miller, noting Jobin’s lavish trips, cruises, and clothing that he spent money on from illegal proceeds. Noting the theft from his friend, Miller said this: “That was unconscionable what you did to him.” Miller said once Jobin is paroled, his release conditions will bar him from gambling, having a job with fiduciary responsibilities, or soliciting any type of funds in any job. Point Loma football fans at last Friday's game against Olympian High must have felt they were at a major amusement park as the team took them on a revved-up point scoring thrill ride in the first half followed by a second half letdown that had them covering their eyes and gasping for breath as if on the most terrifying of fright-inducing rollercoasters. The crowd, along with Pointer players and staff, finally heaved a collective sigh of relief when an Olympian field goal attempt in overtime sailed wide, allowing the Pointers to revel in a 27-24 victory. Minutes before, senior kicker Pedro Borjon had nailed a short field goal for the Pointers in their first possession of overtime, and the Dog defense forced the Eagles to attempt, and miss, a desperate longer field goal to end the game. "Pedro was a big part of our success tonight with the two field goals

and his placement on the kickoffs," said Pointer head coach Mike Hastings as his players continued to celebrate with their senior teammate. Both teams left the field with 3-2 records. "To get the win tonight was huge," Hastings said. "We got up big but knew they were a good team and for our kids to hold on and win in overtime was really special." This was a game that had looked like a Pointer blowout from the opening kickoff when Borjon booted a high and short ball that landed in an area uncovered by Eagle special teams players. A hit by Cameron Auva'a jarred the ball lose from an Olympian player, the Pointers recovering the ball at the Eagle 31. Several run plays took the Pointers near the Eagles goal where quarterback Kyle Grady hit tight end Patrick Rutledge for the game's first score with only 3:02 elapsed. Again, the Eagles failed to cover the ensuing kickoff, the Pointers

recovering at the Eagle 34. Several Josh Ball runs covered much of the distance before quarterback Grady found wide receiver Malik Moore in the right corner of the end zone for the 14-0 lead with only 6:04 gone. Borjon sent his next kickoff deep, and on the Eagles' second offensive play they turned the ball over on a fumble. The Pointers surged down the field for a third touchdown, Ball scoring on a 1-yard run on fourth down. With 9:58 played, the Pointers led 21-0 and the Eagles had run only two offensive plays. Early in the second period, Borjon ran to his right before kicking a lowflying fourth down punt. Pointer coaches argued passionately the bouncing ball had ricocheted off an Eagle player. Game officials first gave possession to the Eagles but reversed their call after consulting. The resulting drive ended with a Borjon field goal and a 24-0 Pointer lead 5:49 before the mid-game break. headed for a Mercy Rule conclusion (a 35-point lead in the second half that results in use of a running clock to end the game more quickly). But, ironically the Pointers were not to score again until Borjon's overtime kick. Adjustments made during halftime by the Eagles clearly changed

The girls volleyball team at Point Loma High School hoisted a trophy as champions of the recent Firebird Classic, an annual tournament hosted by Pacific Ridge High School in Carlsbad. The Lady Pointers won all seven matches over two days en route to the title, defeating Alemany High School (Mission Hills) in straight sets 25-17 and 25-21 in the finals. "It was a great team effort, and everyone stepped up to defeat Alemany," said a happy Pointer head coach Davis Ransom, who is assisted by Daniela de Kervor. Team members Sophia Altobelli, a junior libero, and sophomore outside hitter Sierra Coffo were named to the All-Tournament team, while junior outside hitter Charlie Ekstrom was named Most Valuable Player of the event. Other team members include Hailey Brockett, Angelina Desmond, Mia Hegerle, Sydney Hill, Kylie Komo, Rebecca Nuanez, Katherine Olcott, Sierra Pennell, Delaney Sanders, Reese Turner, Lauren Valenzuela and Maggie Wolf.

Based on the program's success,

the Lady Pointers play in Div. I with the county's top teams. Last year, the team's overall record was 19-16 with a 3-7 fourth place league finish after the team soared to a 24-9 finish and a CIF Div. I championship in 2014. Surfrider’s Paddle for Clean Water around Ocean Beach Pier this Sunday Surfrider’s Paddle for Clean Water in Ocean Beach on Oct. 2 The Surfrider Foundation San Diego County Chapter’s annual Paddle for Clean Water marks its 25th year 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, Oct. 2 at the Ocean Beach Pier.

The paddle is a non-competitive event demonstrating support for pollution-free beaches and waterways. Participants are encouraged to bring a surfboard, kayak, SUP, body board or other human-powered craft to paddle around Southern California’s

longest pier in a mass display of solidarity for the protection of our precious coastline. Paddlers are able to help raise funds at classy.org/surfriderpaddle2016 to support clean water initiatives in San Diego County.

The morning’s festivities offer something for everyone – in and out of the water. A donation-based yoga class will start the day at 8:30 a.m. on the beach, followed by a free light breakfast for all paddlers at 9 a.m. The paddle begins at 10 a.m. with

hundreds of ocean-enthusiasts of all ages making their way around the pier. There will be a group photo and presence from guest speakers including Supervisor Dave Roberts, Councilmember Lorie Zapf, and local activist Cori Schumacher. The event will be emceed by FM94.9’s Chris Cantore, and will feature live music from local reggae band Tribal Theory. Point Loma couple works on climate change solutions BY MIKE MCCARTHY | THE BEACON

Solving global warming is now the primary objective for a retired couple living in Point Loma. Carl and Kate Yaeckel have been actively engaged with a national organization called Citizens Climate Lobby. Carl, a retired Harvard Law attorney, and his wife Kate, a retired elementary school teacher, have for the past two years been promoting a popular solution to saving the planet for their grandchildren. On Sept 10, Carl and Kate met with several residents, at the Point Loma Library, for a presentation and discussion on what many economists now agree is the simplest, fairest, and most effective solution to global warming. The basic plan is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions enough to stabilize the climate, while actually boosting the economy. Citizens Climate Lobby is working towards legislation that would reduce the demand for fossil fuels and make alternative energy sources more affordable. Simply stated, the solution of this plan would be to first levy a federal tax on fossil fuels at their origin. The next step would be to distribute all the revenues, from the fossil fuel tax, to U.S households. This revenue would help everyone to offset the higher costs of clean energy. Citizens Climate Lobby is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that empowers people, from all walks of life, to become effective advocates for a livable world. Thousands of volunteers from all over the country have been spreading a popular solution for climate change. A navel disaster during rush hour A tractor-trailer hauling oranges crashed on a freeway transition in the Torrey Pines area on Sept. 27, which prompted a closure that stretched into the morning commute. The semi truck hit a barrier on the ramp from southbound

Interstate 5 to Carmel Valley Road and state Route 56 around 2:45 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The trucker was not injured. The ramp was shut down so the load of oranges could be transferred to a second truck.

We need a grassy dog park.” Ryan added he's learned from city parks that “crews have started watering the dog parks again on a limited basis.” But, when it comes to completely denuded pooch parks like Dusty Rhodes, “the picture doesn’t lie,” he noted. “Off-leash dog areas were designated as places the City would no longer water during the drought,” said Tim Graham of the city's communications department. “Once that happened, much of the existing grass died and hasn’t come back." Graham said water restrictions went into effect on June 1, 2014. "Regulations were eased on July 15, 2015,” he added. Weighing-in on Dusty Rhodes, Denise (Denny) Knox of Ocean Beach MainStreet Association said, “Dusty Rhodes Dog Park isn’t under our umbrella. It is taken care of by Park & Rec. Not sure why they wouldn’t water it. I get the unhappiness about it. “If they are going to have a dog park, it needs to be kept up by the City, or by a citizen’s group that wants to retain the park for dogs. Melanie Wilson, policy advisor and community rep for County Supervisor Ron Roberts, on Ryan's behalf, inquired with the county veterinarian about the potential danger of Parvo in regional dog parks. “The veterinarian indicated that dogs defecating and urinating on soil in a dog park are not health hazards unless someone ingests the excrement,” Wilson said. “Further, the sprinklers not being active may cause the park to be unsightly and odiferous; however, the feces and organisms within the feces become dehydrated and inactive.”

Music, beer, brats and sausage tosses at OB Oktoberfest Break out the lederhosen, steins and oompah music as the 12th annual Ocean Beach Oktoberfest is ready to roll Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7-8 in the coastal community. Southern California’s wildest and only Oktoberfest party at the beach will feature live music, a beer garden, contests, a beer tasting and a $1,000 Sausage Toss competition. Denise (Denny) Knox, executive director of Ocean Beach MainStreet Association (OBMA), the community's Business Improvement District (BID), said the annual fundraiser benefits many organizations. “All the people pouring beer are working for their own charities all geared towards youth sports,” said Knox adding, “The OB Community Foundation is raising funds for local youth sports with their OB Brat Trot. OB MainStreet is raising funds for beautification projects and maintenance projects in the commercial areas of Ocean Beach.” Noting the BID is looking forward to the fall classic just like everyone else, Knox added, “This event is very popular and brings a lot of shoppers downtown. SEE/SAW Practically everything in Theresa Renfro's new children's toy shop in Point Loma Village has a tale to tell about it. Which Renfro doesn't mind telling. Which she did one recent morning while grabbing a toy bowand-arrow set. “There really is a story behind every toy," she said pointing out the boy-and arrow's creators were boys (ages) 10 and 7, who started making bows with their mom for a school science project. “Then they started making them for local businesses,” Renfro said. “And now they are a national company. “Some of the toys that you see in here came from what my children played with when I wanted to get away from licensed toys, and plastic and things that were very loud,” said Renfro about her business model. Renfro said the Village is a perfect place to set up a children's boutique. “The Village is such a fun place to do business,” she said, adding “it's a walkable, main street USA.” The entrepreneur said there are lots of young families who “are coming to the Point for the schools, which are outstanding. That's what main street does. You get to know the shopkeepers, the people walking down the street, their children, their

"I just found a huge demand for low-tech things, and I wanted to bring all this stuff together in the Village. We also like toys that are educational and make kids successful.”

At the First Friday Liberty in September at Liberty Station, members of the San Diego Pastel Society met to show their created works in the second Dusty Finger Challenge. The challenge had been for members to create portraits. Recording secretary Margaret Larlham, who has many years of experience in working with pastels, encouraged the artists to talk about their work. Carol McClure presented her portrait of a young girl with a big smile, sporting a cowboy hat. “This is my granddaughter. I don’t normally do portraits, so I was really excited to try a painting of her,” she said, “Great job,” Larlham said. Artist Terri McMurray also received lots of encouragement for the portrait of her baby granddaughter. “Wonderful skin tones,” remarked Julianne Ricksecker. Many of San Diego Pastel Society’s members have worked with pastels for a number of years. Some of them switched entirely to pastels after having worked with watercolor or oils, such as what Monique Straub experienced. “My in-laws gifted me with a wonderful, vintage set of Grumbacher pastels. Once I took a test drive with all those beautiful colors, I’ve never looked back. “The learning curve was difficult, and I’m mostly self-taught in pastel, with the exception of a week-long plein air pastel class with a master pastellist that I was awarded by the Pastel Society of America through its scholarship program,” Straub said. Pastel painting is good for plein-air work, according to Larlham. “I love the vitality and freshness of the mark. Also I find the pastels easy to take on my travels. “Whether painting outdoors in San Diego or overseas, I have my box of pastels, paper and a light board to

press on,” she said. Most artists use a dry medium like charcoal to sketch, Larlham explained. The pigment sticks in a box of pastel allow both sketching, in which much of the paper ground is seen, and painting, which coverers almost entirely the paper. “It is a very direct medium–linking to ancient cave paintings. There is no need for brushes – one simply uses fingers. The pastel can be applied generously on its side or more tightly controlled on the tip. Either way the energy of the hand translates directly into the mark of the pastel. “I think this dance of the hand on the paper is one of the key things that makes pastels such a delight for me,” Larlham said. Tamara Stautland agreed. “You have to be willing to get your hands dusty from the pastels. Some people like it, others don’t,” said Stautland, who used to paint primarily with other media but now prefers working with pastels. The San Diego Pastel Society welcomes visitors to their next meeting at 2 p.m. on the first Sunday of October at the Point Loma Library, 3701 Voltaire St. At the meeting, there will be a demonstration by a pastel artist. The annual Taste of Old Town event will return to the streets of Old Town San Diego on Thursday, October 6, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Produced by the Old Town Chamber of Commerce, Taste of Old Town gives the neighborhood’s top restaurants a chance to roll out tastes of their best dishes. San Diego Dance Theater presents annual Trolley Dances off the Blue Line this weekend The 18th annual presentation of the Trolley Dances takes to the rails Oct. 1-2 along the MTA’s Blue Line. This year the taking off point will be the Continuing Education/César E. Chávez Campus at 1901 Main St. in Barrio Logan. The Trolley Dance guides will meet you there to guide you to the sites along the route of each new dance composition. Jean Isaacs, artistic director of the San Diego Dance Theater based in Liberty Station and founder of the Trolley Dances, has created two new dances for this season. Solo dancer Bill Shannon has a bilateral hip deformity and does contemporary performance art on crutches, sometimes adding skateboarding and breakdancing. He creates his own dance language. Monica Bill Barnes studied dance at UCSD and now is a fixture in the NYC dance scene. She returns often to choreograph for the Trolley Dances, and will work this year with the core dancers of The San Diego Dance Theater. Dance Magazine has noted her “playful slapstick charm” and she has also been called “the Tina Fey of Dance.” Jess Humphrey, who teaches dance at San Diego State University, is creating a multigenerational piece using young children, professional dancers, and seniors from the Aging

San Diego is fortunate to have lots of great music venues, but one of the most unique is the Grassroots Oasis, an event and meeting space located at 3130 Moore St. Available for everything from birthday parties to receptions, the location has also held significant music concerts by the likes of Peter Case and Cindy Lee Berryhill, as well as fundraisers for numerous worthy events. Hosted by Martha Sullivan, the location opened in April 2015, with seating for 100 inside and tables with a view of the stage outside on the patio. According to Sullivan, who arrived in San Diego from the Bay Area in 2001, the inspiration for the venue is twofold. “I had previously done Grassroots House Concerts at my business in Sorrento Valley, where I had my fine art and collectibles. My landlord decided that she wanted to do something else with the building so I had to leave that in the spring of 2012.” The second inspiration is more personal. “Since about 2003 I’ve

been doing grass roots political organizing,” she explained. “It’s always tough to find spaces for events and places that you can do training or have gatherings. So, I was really trying to work my two passions together, hosting live music and also doing community based political organizing.” She spent three years before finding the Grassroots Oasis location. “I wanted to live onsite as it’s easier to manage that way,” she commented. “And I wanted place that was pretty easy to get to and centrally located.” Though the building’s use for meetings is a big part of the happenings at Grassroots Oasis, Sullivan considers music the key to activities. “Beyond the concerts, a lot of the political events that I either host myself or that I provide the venue for, feature music. I really see music as a great way to connect people and bring people together, helping bind our common ground.” Upcoming performances include Nashville-based Americana performer Matt Haeck on Oct. 14. DINING Sushi Lounge opens new restaurant in Point Loma 24

San Diego-based Sushi Lounge recently announced the opening of its third restaurant on Sept. 9. Coowners Katie Rooney and Frank Interlandi are partnering again to expand their innovative sushi restaurant to Point Loma. The new location, right in the heart of the community, joins Sushi Lounge Poway, which opened in 2006, and Sushi Lounge Encinitas, which debuted in 2012. Rooney and Interlandi, two friends who originally conceptualized Sushi Lounge while working together for another restaurant, will continue to provide a neighborhood option for fresh and inventive sushi in a welcoming, lounge-like atmosphere. Their focus has always been on the utmost integrity, from the way they choose ingredients and prepare the food, to the way they treat staff, customers and the community. Sushi Lounge Point Loma is located at 1304 Rosecrans St. The restaurant features bar seating for 15, along with a sushi bar that seats 22 and another 65 seats at tables and booths throughout the restaurant. The modern, open space is warm with earth tones, bubble lamps and natural elements, such as bamboo and granite.

Baja Chefs on the Point The Point Loma Optimist sponsored Baha Chefs presentation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 16, at the NTC Foundation Gallery, Barracks 17 Plaza, Liberty Station. Jim Seman and his committee have organized another spectacular happening at which top Baja Chefs will create a dining experience mirroring Valle Guadalupe. The gourmet experience will include Baja regional wines as well as local, craft beers. This is an important community event in that all proceeds go to Dewey Elementary School curriculum and equipment. Last year’s event provided funds for a science lab and equipment valued at more the $20,000. The Point Loma Optimist Club selected Dewey Elementary School as the beneficiary of the money raised because the students there are primarily from families headed by enlisted military personnel, who simply cannot contribute the hundreds of thousands of dollars contributed by parents at the other Point Loma Cluster elementary schools. The price of the event remains the same, $150 per person. Last year’s party was outstanding and this year is shaping up even better. Point Loma resident and restaurant industry veteran Alison Mollenhauer will be at the helm of Sushi Lounge Point Loma as the general manager. An expanded bar menu will feature premium sake, sake flights, as well as local craft beer and wine. “Frank was a resident of Poway when we opened Poway and both Frank and I have deep ties to this community,” explained Rooney. “Frank now resides in Encinitas close to Sushi Lounge Encinitas, while my family and I have been long-time residents of Point Loma. We cannot wait to bring Sushi Lounge to our neighborhood.”
