When I, like anyone else, approached Kevin Gormly, we were assured of receiving one thing in return: a smile. That wide, trademark Kevin smile was known to thousands of Point Loma High School students, staff, parents and community members over the past l7 years as Kevin served the Kevin Gormly school and community, beginning in 1999 when he arrived on campus to teach Spanish and social science. In 2003, he was selected for a vacant vice principal position, and it was here he excelled. Most VPs are disliked – often hated – by students who have been disciplined or punished. Kevin managed to do his job and earn the respect and even friendship of his "clients." That tenure lasted until early October of 2015 when the popular administrator began experiencing headaches. other than to say the prosecutor was speaking for them. Deputy District Attorney Kyle Sutterley initially asked for no bail, but when San Diego Superior Court Judge Fred Maguire suggested he specify an amount, Sutterley asked for $10 million. Sutterley said Burke “has significant family resources” and investigators found gold bars in his safe. “It was an unprovoked attack. He’s a danger to our community,” said Sutterley. A representative of a state pharmacist board asked the judge to temporarily cease Burke’s practice, which Maguire granted. His attorney, Tom Warwick, opposed the temporary ban and said he works at a Scripps hospital, without specifying which one. Attorney Tom Warwick said the $10 million bail figure was too high, saying he had never heard of such a high bail amount before. Warwick suggested bail at $250,000.

Warwick told the judge Burke was at the Ocean Beach residence when he heard loud banging on the door. He said Robles had threatened Burke before, and he grabbed a firearm before he opened the door. “My client is defending himself in his home. The shots fired were out of fear for his safety,” said Warwick. Warwick said Robles had dated Burke’s female roommate and he had threatened Burke before. Burke’s mother, from New Jersey, was in the audience with several other relatives. Warwick said Burke had previously worked as a lifeguard in New Jersey for 13 years. San Diego Police said Burke and Robles were acquaintances and he was shot at 11:09 p.m. in the 4100 block of Voltaire Street. Burke left the condominium afterwards and talked with a fellow pharmacist, said Warwick. Warwick said Burke contacted police and arranged for his surrender later. Burke was arrested at 7:40 a.m. June 23 downtown at 16th and F Street. A preliminary hearing was set for Aug. 11.

It's transition time at Point Loma Association as Robert (Tripp) Jackson has stepped down as chair after two consecutive terms handing the gavel to Clark Anthony Burlingame. The change took effect July 1, with new board members Kay O'Bryan and Matt Kalla joining the group, as well as Theodore C. Walker taking over as the nonprofit's new treasurer. Created in 1961, the PLA comprises residents and businesses committed to improving the quality of life of Point Loma through beautification, education, charitable activities and civic collaboration. In parting comments, Jackson praised the nonprofit's work while imploring its members to become increasingly more involved in Peninsula community service. “Today, as before, we have a great group of people,” said Jackson, “though, I must say, the same three to eight people are doing a lot of the work. My hope is that will change in

He hosted a mid-day radio program on KFMBAM in the '70s and '80s. He was nightly weather anchor on KFMB Channel Eight. In the '90s, he was news anchor at NBC 7. Burlingame and his wife, Kaye, have been Point Lomans since 1976 and have two adult sons and three grandchildren. Relatively new to the PLA, Clark wants to help the organization take

the next step up. “I want to build on everything that Robert and others who have come before me have done,” Burlingame said adding, “One thing I think we (PLA) can do a little better is communicating with ourselves, and have better liaisons with other organizations.” Noting PLA is best known for its beautification projects, including creating and maintaining median landscaping, Burlingame added, “I'd like to see us expand that role.” A lifelong Point Loman and community activist, Jackson is the son of the late Ann Tripp Jackson. Ann was the nonprofit's first female president. Ann was also an early chair of the Peninsula Community Planning Board (PCPB), which makes land-use recommendations to the city. When he first became PLA chair in 2013, Jackson had a set of goals including developing working relationship with Ocean Beach, the Port District, Cabrillo National Monument and Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. "Mayor Faulconer and Councilmember Lorie Zapf strongly support the coastal height limit and protecting coastal views,” said mayor spokesman Craig Gustafson. “Further review of the Municipal Code has determined that this project does not conform to the City’s development regulations. The City has issued a stop work order on the project to ensure it follows all codes and regulations."

In a separate statement, Zapf noted, “I believe this project is contrary to the intent and integrity of Proposition D (coastal 30-foot height limit passed in 1972). It allows the manipulation of grade on a lot known to be relatively flat, to achieve greater overall height. That is in question.” Zapf added she's requested the City Attorney's office to render an opinion on the development's legality. At issue is Emerson Street Duplexes, currently under construction at 3144 Emerson St. near Evergreen. The project calls for construction of two, three-story duplexes with garages beneath a total of four

dwelling units. Zoning on the property allows up to 19 dwelling units on a single, or consolidated lot. However, a substantial amount of neighbors are convinced the project exceeds the 30-foot height limit, arguing the extra height amounts to a “fourth story” and is yet another example of developers using loopholes to circumvent height limitations. Emerson condo project criticism has come from other quarters as well. “The Point Loma Association will stand by our community and the Peninsula Community Planning Board (spearheading opposition),” said Robert (Tripp) Jackson, the nonprofit's immediate past president. Claiming the condo project has “blindsided” the Roseville community, Jackson pointed out, “This wasn't the spirit of the law, code and process that protects our communities. It's in the best interest of everyone that this (project) pauses, and we lay out all the cards and review the entire situation. We have a commitment to reevaluate language and close 'loopholes' where needed. … This is a big deal for the Peninsula and the Coast. We are in a 10-year building cycle and need to keep our eyes open.” PCPB chair Jon Linney pointed out the city's stop-work order followed quickly on the heels of organized public outcry over the allegedly oversized condo structure. “We were called to a meeting of the mayor's office where there were more than 20 different city officials,” Linney said adding, “The mayor has told us he's going to fix this loophole. We're pleased about that, and that work has halted on construction. We hope that Mayor Faulconer puts a stop to any future projects like this in the city of San Diego.”

Amazing journey: From Japan to PLHS valedictorian in nine years BY SCOTT HOPKINS | THE BEACON

He arrived in the United States from Japan nine years ago, a third-grade student whose English vocabulary consisted of "one, two, three, hello and thank you."

There were no people at Silver Gate School who could speak to him in his native language although he recalls the principal setting him up with special English lessons. From Silver Gate, he went to Dana Middle School, and it wasn't until his

sixth-grade year, after "a long struggle," that he became comfortable reading, writing and speaking his new language of English And last month he spoke in front of the Class of 2016 as the valedictorian of Point Loma High School.

For Kei (pronounced Kay) Takanami, it's been a long journey from the time his family learned his father's company was transferring him to San Diego. Both he and his brother Taku, who is two years older, worked to master an unfamiliar language before beginning to excel among their new peers. Like some other valedictorians in PLHS' illustrious 91-year history, Takanami earned A's in every course he took over the four-year period from grades 9-12. Takanami noted classes with heavy reading requirements took up more of his study time, but revealed that math, for him, came quite easily. He calls himself a "math nerd," and took part in a math competition against other schools. After scoring 2310 on the SAT test (2400 is perfect), Takanami will join Taku, who is majoring in applied mathematics at UC Berkeley, a school Taku has enjoyed so much it changed family plans to have them return to Japan for university. Takanami plans to study architecture at Cal in the College of Environmental Design. "I was heavily science-focused in high school and decided to try something new," Takanami noted. "Architecture is a more artistic approach to the building process, and I really liked the program and the hands-on approach there." An art history class at PLHS with teacher Glenn Richard also influenced Takanami. "I really enjoyed this class," he recalls, "and it's one of the reasons I chose architecture as my major because we studied a lot of buildings throughout history." Takanami's father, Toru, whose Japanese company transferred him here nine years ago, was transferred back to Japan two years ago. His mother, Noriko, chose to stay with her sons until they completed high school. With both sons studying at Cal, she will move back to Japan this summer. His most challenging class? "AP (Advanced Placement) biology with teacher Silvia Maas," Takanami answered without hesitation. "We had this huge book, and I was reading almost every night" during my junior year. Takanami added he and his friends still eat lunch frequently in her open classroom. Takanami observed "a friendly competition" in his academic classes, noting many top students have the same daily class schedule. He also began playing trumpet in fourth grade and played in the PLHS marching band, wind ensemble and jazz band, another source of friendships. problem, Kevin was given antibiotics, but the pains persisted. Tests were ordered, and the results were both stunning and sobering: brain tumor. Kevin was never again to set foot again on the campus he so loved and spend time with the students and staff who were so dear to his heart. Surgery was immediately scheduled, and most of the tumor was removed. Weeks of radiation followed, and when the headaches returned, an examination showed the original tumor was growing again and a new, smaller tumor had appeared. Kevin endured his most difficult days in early April when intense pains and sickness consumed him and mystified his doctors, who inserted a shunt in his brain in an attempt to relieve fluid buildup. But nothing was effective, and two new aggressive tumors were discovered. In early May, Kevin was brought home and placed in hospice care, later to return to the hospital. He fought so strongly during his final eight weeks, astonishing family members, close friends and caregivers. But on the afternoon of June 24, Kevin's battle ended. His family posted this on a "GoFundMe" page established in his name: "It is with great sadness and a very heavy heart we share with you all that God has taken our beloved Kevin home. He fought like a champ to stay here with his family, but God mercifully ended his suffering yesterday afternoon." Kevin was only 52 years old. We enjoyed a special relationship because of my writing for the Peninsula Beacon, and I failed to realize how the sight of Kevin and his everpresent smile picked me up during a difficult day or rough week. I have shed many tears for Kevin over the past eight months and prayed for him often. Kevin immediately pinned the nickname "Scottie" on me, and I wore it proudly. At a recent sold-out benefit spaghetti dinner (that raised $15,645 for the Gormly family), I met his mother, Rebecca, for the first time. I introduced myself as Scottie, and her eyes lit up. "So you're Scottie," she said. "Kevin spoke of you often." While I was honored and fought back tears, I have since berated myself for not writing more cards, sending messages or even inquiring more often about his condition. Forgive me, Kevin. I believe the last time I saw Kevin was during a visit to the PLHS campus by Academy Award-winning actress Margaret Avery, a Pointer alumna. Following her talk to two periods of students, Kevin asked for a photo with Avery, which I took. That photo will forever hold a special place in my heart. Earlier this week, I took two large, framed photos of Kevin to Rebecca and her husband, retired Navy Capt.

Robert Gormly, a Vietnam Warinjured combat veteran, to their Chula Vista home. We chatted for awhile and I learned they moved from Norfolk, Va. when Kevin was entering junior high school. We laughed when I told them I may likely have been his sixth-grade teacher down the street at Kellogg School if they had arrived a year earlier. As it was, Kevin and I realized that, during Hilltop's glory years of football from 1979-1981, I, along with groups of my sixth-grade students, watched his games. Little did we know that, years later, our paths would cross again. As a senior, Kevin was selected All-Conference, a standout player on great teams, foreshadowing his future at PLHS. Many times I stood with Kevin at athletic events or in the lunch area and watched him work his magic, chatting with random students while others approached to converse with him or ask a question. As he roamed the campus, sometimes on foot, other times in a golf cart, students called, "Here comes 'Gorm Storm,'" the loving nickname bestowed on him by creative campus teens. Kevin had a favorite maroon tie with gold accents that matched PLHS' colors. Facing the emotionally excruciating fact he would never return to the campus, he gave the tie to Principal Hans Becker when Becker visited Kevin's home during his illness. Becker then wore the tie to the school's 91st commencement last month, telling the audience its story during his remarks. Also last month, I arranged to interview this year's PLHS valedictorian Kei Takanami for a Beacon story. I met Kei in the school's main office. Becker and current vice principal Kelly Lowry, who was being mentored by Kevin, suggested I do the interview in Kevin's vacant office. Considering his office "sacred ground," I must have looked stunned, but I slowly walked around my good friend's desk, pulled out his chair and sat down. I noticed a 24-pack of water on the floor, thought for a moment, then smiled and thought "Why not?" I gave a bottle to Kei, took one for myself and began the interview. We spoke for 20 minutes as Kei shared his fascinating life with me. But he must have wondered, "Why does this reporter keep wiping tears away?" If there's a school campus in heaven, it's now in better hands. Godspeed, Kevin. I love you, my friend. Kevin is survived by his parents, a nephew, and wife Veronica. The two met in 1999 while teaching at PLHS. They have two beautiful children, Samantha and Joseph.

PLHS senior earns prestigious scholarship Madilyn Yeoman, a student at the local Point Loma High School, recently received a $2,000 scholarship from the Hispanic American Commitment to Education Resources (HACER) committee. The HACER Scholarship is a prestigious

award offered to hispanic students who are in need of financial aid and who display exemplary leadership and scholastic achievement. The SoCal branch of the scholarship program, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year,

selected Yeoman out of more than 150 qualifying applicants. Yeoman had a GPA well over 4.0, but was also varsity volleyball captain, sand volleyball captain, and a member of the scholarship foundation and Cesar Chavez Club at her school.

Two Correia Middle School students will be participating in upcoming Major League Baseball All-Star Game events after they were named winners in a recent essay contest sponsored by the San Diego Padres. The contest was part of the 87th All-Star Game activities before the July 12 game at Petco Park. Both Carson Arnold (second place) and Zane Sieger (third place) were students in the humanities classes of

teacher Keri Clark. Clark assigned her students to submit online essays using the contest's theme "Let us know what makes San Diego an all-star community!" Arnold received tickets to the MLB All-Star Home Run Derby and other events scheduled on Monday, July 11, including the All-Star players' workouts. For Sieger, he'll be attending the AllStar legends and celebrity softball game and other activities set for Sunday, July 10.

BIRTHDAY PERFORMANCE If you’ve been involved in the San Diego music community for any length of time, odds are you’ve run into Jeffrey Bloom. Currently bassist in cover band Stone Horse, Bloom has been a mainstay of local clubs for 35 years, emerging out of the late ’70s and early ’80s La Jolla / Bird Rock scene that included the likes of Rolle Love of the Beat Farmers and acclaimed film composer Michael Andrews. On July 20, Bloom celebrates his 50th birthday with a special performance at the Ocean Beach Farmers Market, featuring an all-star group of musicians including guitarists Greg Vaughn (Danyavaad & The Shimmy Sisters). “It just feels right to have my birthday celebration outdoors,” Bloom said. “I can’t think of a better spot to do something like this than the OB Farmers Market. It’s free, it’s all ages, it’s right in the sunshine and sea breeze. Even without the occasion being my birthday, that would be worth celebrating,” he joked. Bloom acquired his first guitar at age 9 and was playing house parties by 11. Already a veteran of San Diego’s teen clubs of the era, Bloom first came to prominence in 1983 as a member of indie rock band, Army of Love, scoring local radio

hits and opening spots for the likes of the Kinks. Following that combo’s split in 1987, Bloom’s career has been eclectic, but always rooted in music, including stints as a rock photographer and guitar tech. Musical highlights include a brief run with the World’s Cutest Killers alongside members of The Go-Go’s, Girlschool and Blondie as well as opening for the Ramones with his band, Sex & Free Beer, in 1989. “Those were incredible days,” Bloom mused. “You try to appreciate it at the time, but it’s not until later that you can really take it all in.” More recently he has released three solo albums and worked on original music with his band Buterflys and Zephyrs. Now he’s also gigging with Stone Horse, who next performs on July 28 aboard the Bahia Belle and Aug. 20 at Petco Park as part of the pre-game show, Bloom enjoys the opportunity to showcase his bass chops on cover tunes. “A much as I enjoy playing my own music, it’s a lot of fun playing classic songs that everybody knows. A lot of shows with that kind of set list are parties or some sort of

happy gathering, so it’s hard not to enjoy the atmosphere. “ For his birthday set he promises a rotating group of musicians. “I’m going to pull out all the stops,” he laughed. “I’ve played the Farmer’s Market many times,” Bloom remarked. “I love that there are children dancing and smiling, sometimes coming up and singing. So for this I’ve put together a multigenerational group of players that range in age from 12 to 60.” Bloom has one of the most eclectic repertoires of cover tunes in town, with a set list full of tunes from the likes of ParliamentFunkadelic to David Bowie. With 35 years of music behind him, Bloom is happy to still be making music. “I took a break from playing live in 2015,” he said. “I still played for me, sometimes just down at the beach with the ocean as my backing band, but I didn’t take on any of the stress that goes with being in a band and booking shows. But that break has made me appreciate things even more and I find that I enjoy making music and taking it to audiences now more than ever. SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is celebrating travel and transportation from the era of real horsepower during “Stagecoach Days,” kicking off on July 9. Come join in old fashioned fun of the mid-1800s from noon to 4:00pm on eight Saturdays in July and August. Sponsored by Fiesta de Reyes, County of San Diego, and the Boosters of Old Town, these free events feature a different theme each Saturday such as: Days of the Vaqueros, Women of the West, Soldiers and Citizens, TwainFest and Taste of the Past. Attendees will enjoy afternoons filled with activities that reflect life in early San Diego and celebrate the West on the move. Through living history activities and demonstrations, stories and songs, visitors will gain an appreciation for early modes of transportation and daily life. All activities are geared toward children and adults of all ages.

“This year’s Stagecoach Days will be the best in our park’s history,” stated Event Coordinator Gregg Giacopuzzi. “We have added many more family friendly activities to the event this year so visitors will get a true taste of what Old Town was like in the 1800s.” The Stagecoach Days schedule is as follows: July 9 — “Games and Amusements” — Try your hand at 19th century games and amusements - long before smart phones and tablets. July 16 — “Women of the West” — Women played an important part in the development of the West. Some of their daily activities will be demonstrated on this Saturday. One of the highlights of the day will be a quilt walk throughout the park, featuring antique quilts. July 23 — “Soldiers and Citizens” — The military has been part of San Diego since its

inception. Following the Mexican American War, Dragoons, the Mormon Battalion and the Boundary Commission all had an impact on life in San Diego. See historic uniforms, weapons, and hear their stories. July 30 — “Taste of the Past” — What we eat, how we acquire it, who prepares it, how it is prepared are part of our cultural make up. This day will explore what was part of the dining experiences for people in early San Diego. While you learn about the foods of the past you will be able to try modern tastes that evoke that time, provided by the food purveyors in the park. August 6 — “Trades That Shaped Westward Expansion” — As towns developed in the West so did the need for specialized trades and artisans. Old Town San Diego will present pivotal 19th century trades that helped shape the community of San Diego. August 13 — “Days of the Vaquero” —

Vaqueros were the first cowboys in California. They were highly skilled horsemen and cattle herders who were an integral part of the early cattle trade in California. The day will celebrate their horsemanship techniques and other aspects of Californio culture. Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, with the support of the Boosters of Old Town, County of San Diego, and donations from Fiesta de Reyes, is proud to offer these free activities for adults and children of all ages. The park is located on San Diego Avenue and Twiggs Street in San Diego, and is conveniently located next to the Old Town Transit Center, with Coaster, Trolley, and MTS bus service. Several cars are being worked on, in various stages of repair, at the same time. “We have a robot that we use to cure (painting) the product that's twice as fast,” said O'Neill adding he's currently processing about 55 cars per week where, otherwise, he would only get about 25 done per week. O'Neill started his collision repair business in 1998 in Arizona. He sold a total of eight collision repair shops in Tucson, Phoenix and Las Vegas in 2012.

Ocean Beach Brewery kegged its first house beer this week and officially opened July 1. Newport Pizza owner Mike Tajran has been working since 2013 to bring his vision for the three-story brewpub to reality, and finally, his view from the top is spectacular. Located on Newport Avenue directly across from Tajran’s pizza place, the brewery has three ADA accessible floors, a full kitchen, a five-barrel brewing system, a retail section and a stunning rooftop deck.
