Permanent overnight closure of Brighton restrooms eyed BY TONY DE GARATE | THE BEACON A decision on whether to close the restrooms at the foot of Brighton Avenue permanently from midnight to 6:30 a.m. could come as early as this week. The city began closing the restrooms at night on a 30-day trial basis in mid-April. But the Park and Recreation Department and District 2 City Councilman Kevin Faulconer wanted 30 more days to get a better idea of how closing the restrooms would affect holiday and summer users, said Faulconer staffers. Public restrooms at the Ocean Beach shore have traditionally had 24-hour availability. That’s been the case since the opening of the Brighton Avenue comfort station nearly a year ago. The restrooms they replaced, as well as the restrooms to the south at the Ocean Beach Lifeguard Station, have been open 24 hours a day.

Some community leaders and business owners — notably members of the Ocean Beach Town Council and Ocean Beach MainStreet Association — favor closing the Brighton Street restrooms at night to discourage homeless activity and vandalism. On the other hand, Park and Recreation Department officials favor 24-hour availability, said staff members for Faulconer. During the first 30-day trial period, evidence indicated people were relieving themselves outside the building when it was closed, but there was no vandalism, said Faulconer’s representatives. The city contracts with a private security firm to close the restrooms, according to staffers. Clay Bingham, deputy director of the Park and Recreation Department whose jurisdiction includes Ocean Beach, did not respond to emails or return phone calls for this story.

Top achievers in PLHS class of 2013 share messages of hope for future BY SCOTT HOPKINS | THE BEACON The valedictorian and two salutatorians — all girls — of Point Loma High’s class of 2013 have something else in common. None has ever received anything other than an “A” in their high school careers. So how did they end up with different grade-point averages? “I took one more AP (advanced placement) class than they did,” said valedictorian Tessa Adler, “giving me a GPA of 4.90.” Salutatorians Vicki Gonzalez and Diane La were right behind, both recording GPAs of 4.82. Their years of homework, studying and perseverance has paid off, with Adler heading to Yale University, La to the University of California, Los Angeles and Gonzalez to Stanford University. They were the only members of the graduating class adorned in white robes at the school’s 88th commencement ceremony earlier this week. All three of the honorees described a high school life that was a blend of studying, mixed with social activities and recreation.

“It’s all about time management,” said Adler, who said she has danced all her life, played field hockey at Point Loma High and has been a member of the Mothers and Daughters Club Assisting Philanthropies. La, who has spent many hours doing hospital volunteer work, and Gonzalez, who has participated in school surf, soccer and track and field teams, said they also enjoyed diversified lives. Adler cited AP chemistry teacher Lisa Graham as highly influential on her future plans. “She always encouraged me and told me, ‘Chemistry may be your calling,’ which stuck with me,” Adler said. “Now I want to go into something (involving) chemistry.” La said AP biology teacher Sylvia Maas was her motivational force. “It was a really hard class and I worked at it, doing all the reading assignments,” she said. Gonzalez, in turn, singled out math teacher Ian Law, saying, “I enjoyed his class so much and like his work ethic.” At Yale, Adler plans to major in chemical engineering and global issues. She said she would like to learn German and Swahili before joining the United Nations agency to help developing countries. La seems no less ambitious. “I’m planning to major in chemistry or the sciences because I really like helping people,” said La. “My volunteer work in the hospital has made me want to work in the medical field, developing medicines and cures.”

One-stop website expanded to tout youth summer activities Peninsula parents now have a onestop website where they can check on all summer activities available for area children and teens. The Point Loma Cluster website has been in operation for years as a source of information on all area public schools. Now, webmaster Vicki Moats is expanding the information listed on the site. “I want all of this information to be available to our community parents,” Moats said. Moats also produces the frequent

NEWS Vacant market lot in OB reopens for self-pay customers; future of property still unclear BY TONY DE GARATE | THE BEACON The weeds in the parking lot of the former Apple Tree supermarket were becoming so tall, so entrenched, and so well established, one observer jokingly concluded it couldn’t have resulted from neglect. “I thought they were growing Christmas trees to sell in December,” one observer wrote it in a post on the Facebook page of the Ocean Beach Town Council. Now, more than five months after Apple Tree Market went out of business, and one month after the city issued an abatement order to the Los Angelesbased property owner to clean up the area at 4949 Santa Monica Ave., the weeds are gone. So is the chain-link fence surrounding the property. And, for the most part, the homeless population that had taken up residence in a thicket of overgrown jasmine bushes has moved
on. Real commercial activity has returned for the first time all year. The lot this month reopened for self-pay parking lot customers, managed by Laz Parking, which runs several other lots in Ocean Beach. It’s a move local business owners had sought for a long time, said Denny Knox, executive director of the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association (OBMA). “We’re absolutely thrilled,” Knox said. “Parking around here is so critical, especially on the weekends and in the summer. It really serves the community better than an empty lot.” The additional parking, which contains more than 90 stalls, has already reaped benefits, according to merchants. On the first Wednesday following the reopening of the lot, merchants at the Farmers Market reported a spike in sales, Knox said. With the parking lot now reopened,
an uneasy curiosity continues about the future of the building itself, now into its sixth month of vacancy. Several OBMA members have communicated with the building’s owner, Elliot Megdal, a Los Angeles-based Realtor, but Knox said she has heard nothing about Megdal’s plans for redevelopment. One clue could reside in a document called a notice of intent that Megdal was ordered to file in response to the city’s abatement order on May 1. Megdal was required to state whether he planned to demolish, rehabilitate, lease or sell the building. Megdal was further ordered to submit a timeline for bringing the property back into productive use. Officials for the city’s Neighborhood Code Compliance Division, which issued the abatement order, have not responded to numerous phone calls and emails for this story. “There’s no good source of information on this. It’s wait and see,” Knox said.

Memorial Mass set June 14 for Mary Louise Guidry, 95 The sunset of Mary Lou’s life occurred on Monday morning, May 20. She took her freedom flight and soared to the light. A kindly neighbor wrote to me, “You lost your mom but Heaven got a new angel.” She was 95 years old and was battling Alzheimer’s. A friend lovingly said, “She laid down to take a nap and forgot to wake up.” Mary Lou passed peacefully. And the way she passed was a blessing.
The beauty of her life and legacy of love and inspiration will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 14 with a Memorial Mass at St. Brigid’s Catholic Church in Pacific Beach, which was “God’s country,” according to Mary Lou. We will always remember her words on her 90th birthday: “I never get bored. I never get lonely. I never feel sorry for myself. I count my blessings. Attitude is everything.” She remained loving, nurturing,
sweet and supportive. She was interested in family members and friends, offering her sage snippets and words of wisdom and was “in the moment” to the end. Mary Lou was loved by many: family, friends, family of friends and friends of family, neighbors of more than 60 years, folks who touched her life over all the years and caregivers at Where the Heart Is for the last four and a half years.

WALTER FITZGERALD HIMMELBERG JULY 19, 1918 - MAY 29, 2013 Born on a summer day in Manhattan on East 89th Street, New York City, the same year that Russia declared itself a republic of Soviets, the American baseball season was cut short due to the Great War and World War 1 ended. Walt grew up healthy and happy and was later drafted in WW11. Stationed in Pearl Harbor he and his buddies were on their way to Mass on December 7th when the attack began. A Japanese plane was hit and nosedived 20 feet in front of them. My grandfather wore a leg brace for the rest of his years. Every year for Veterans’ Day and Pearl Harbor Day you could find Walt marching in a parade and being interviewed by the media en masse. Walt married Anita Hanson-Himmelberg on April 18, 1947. They had five children. As a matter of course or fluke of nature, they produced ten grandchildren, and then the grandchildren begat 15 great-grandchildren. Walter worked for NBC Sports as a camera man and master controls in NYC for his entire career. He loved tinkering with Ham radios and was an active member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors. A private Memorial and Celebration of Life over the last weekend in July in true Himmelberg/ Hanson style. The world is a tremendous place having had him in it as I think wildflowers and happiness sprang up in his wake. We will miss his infinite sweetness and his twinkling Irish eyes very, very much. We love you, Grandpa.

4-day summer boat show set to return to Sheraton Harbor Island BY NIC0LE SOURS LARSON | THE BEACON The 10th annual summer in-thewater boat show is back at the Sheraton Harbor Island and Spanish Landing Park on June 20–23 with a new name, broadened focus, more vendors and an earlier June date chosen to maximize the boating season’s potential. Show hours are noon to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 20 and Friday, June 21; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 22; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 23. Tickets are $12 for adults. Children 12 and under and active military, police and fire personnel are admitted free with identification. The event’s updated name reflects the boat show’s new naming sponsor, as well as the show’s greater participation from international vendors and larger yachts. “We have lots of boats and products coming from around the world,” said show manager Dave Geoffroy, who is also vice president of sponsoring organization National Marine Manufacturing Association. “We’ve made an effort to bring in larger boats, including eight or nine superyachts in the 80- to 100-footplus range.” This will be San Diegans’ first opportunity to experience a taste of the superyacht lifestyle since the last Yachtfest was held three years ago. The show will be about 30 percent larger this year, reflecting an improving economy and the public’s renewed embrace of boating, Geoffroy said. Expect to see more than 150 vessels, both new and brokerage boats, ranging from personal watercraft, dinghies and inflatables to mid-size sail and powerboats up through luxury superyachts. This year, we’ll be introducing four new sailboats,” plus a current model powerboat, Canfield said. “Bénéteau powerboats are the fastest-growing brand. They’ve always been built, but were little-known on the West Coast. We have only one available to show.” Canfield recommends the show because of “the great variety of styles of boats and great deals.” Best of all, he said, banks are again lending at the lowest rates he’s ever seen. More than 50 vendors will offer an array of boating accessories like electronics, canvas, anchors and other marine gear, as well as boating services that will exhibit under tents at Spanish
Landing Park. Participants can choose from over 100 educational interactive seminars and skill-building clinics — both on the water and on land — focusing on both sail and power boating subjects, including boat-handling and seamanship, docking and maintenance and repair. The show’s website lists both free seminars and Discover Boating’s on-the-water “At the Helm” clinics, for which advance registration is recommended and extra charges apply. Fees for each Discover Boating clinic include same-day boat show admission. The show also features a “Be a Diver” pool, where guests equipped with a swimsuit can get an introductory diving lesson and find opportunities to try out stand-up paddling, kayak-
ing and other paddling sports. Last year’s attendance was up about 64 percent over the previous year to more than 5,000 guests, as the boating market began to show marked signs of improvement. Greater interest and sales at San Diego-area boat brokerages indicate continued revived expenditures on water-based pursuits. The family-friendly boat show offers food for sale, including tacos and drinks at the Bay Club Restaurant, as well as a visiting gourmet food truck. Paid parking is available at the Port District lot adjacent to the hotel. The show is located at the Sheraton 1380 Harbor Island Drive. Criminal proceedings were suspended for a man suspected of kidnapping and raping a woman in Loma Portal after his attorney told a judge he doubted his client was mentally competent to understand the charges. Michael Meretse Tesfa, 21, will be examined in jail on July 30 by a psychologist or psychiatrist, who will write a report for a judge ahead of an Aug. 23 hearing. If the judge finds Tesfa is mentally incompetent, the defendant would likely be committed to a state mental hospital for treatment. If the judge finds Tesfa is competent, a new preliminary hearing will be set in San Diego Superior Court. Tesfa has pleaded not guilty to all charges, which include robbery and false imprisonment in the March 18 incident. The victim told police she met Tesfa earlier that night and he asked her to go to a hotel with him, but she declined. Shortly before 9 p.m., Tesfa is alleged to have sexually assaulted her behind a closed restaurant on Pacific Highway near Rosecrans Street. Tesfa is on probation for punching his mother in the face on Jan. 2, 2012, according to records. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery and was sentenced to 180 days in jail and reportedly will now have his probation revoked. Testa remains in custody on $750,000 bail.

Father arraigned after crash that killed son, 4 A 40-year-old man is facing hefty charges after he crashed his Nissan Titan off Interstate 5 near Old Town on June 2, rolling down an embankment near Rosecrans Street and critically injuring his 4-year-old son before fleeing the scene. The boy died of his injuries on June 11 at Rady Childrens Hospital, according to published reports. The driver, identified as Angelo Fabiani Arroyo, was arrested in Imperial Beach two days after the accident and is being charged with suspicion of hit and run causing injury and an additional count of child endangerment. He was arraigned in court this week. It was not immediately clear what additional charges he may now be facing. According to California Highway Patrol officials, Arroyo was towing a small watercraft trailer on the southbound 5 when he apparently struck the guardrail and a tree. The vehicle was sent careening off the freeway and down an embankment, where it came to rest against a retaining wall. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the driver try to free the boy, who was belted in a child-safety seat. But officials said that after releasing the child from the seat, the boy toppled out and fell 10 feet to the pavement below on Jefferson Street. At that point, Arroyo allegedly fled the scene. ‘Blessing of Surfboards’ event returns to OB Surfers are being encouraged to stop by St. Peter’s by the Sea Lutheran Church on Saturday, July 20 for the church’s annual “Blessing of the Surfboards and Those Who Ride Them” event. Record number of volunteers spruce up Point in Day of Service A record 500 volunteers banded together on June 1 for the third annual Day of Service, an event designed to brighten and beautify the Point Loma community by putting some serious elbow grease into their passion. The event drew not only communityminded residents, but also high-level city officials, including San Diego City Councilmembers Kevin Faulconer and Lorie Zapf. The annual event is organized by the Point Loma CommunityPresbyterian Church. “The Day of Service was a great opportunity for the entire community to work together in a variety of 35 projects and skills so all ages could participate,” said event co-chairman Marty Smith. Many organizations partnered in the effort, including Veterans Village, the
YMCA, the youth group from First Church of the Nazarene, Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, Boy Scouts Troop 500 and Troop 24, Girl Scouts, the Point Loma Association and the city of San Diego. Faulconer and Zapf and students from First Church of the Nazarene planted 13 Torrey pines at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park in memory of Bob Baxley, a former Ocean Beach lifeguard, Sunset Cliffs waterman and superior court judge, as well as in remembrance of 13 victims of a 1918 mass drowning at Ocean Beach. Zapf also worked along the San Diego River at Dog Beach, where she was helped by Scouts and Capt. Scott Adams, commanding officer of the Point Loma Submarine Base. Rope barriers were installed to protect native plants. Veterans from Veterans Village helped with hillside stabiliza-

County Fair puts all the fun, music acts you can handle at your fingertips BY KEVIN MCKAY | THE BEACON

The annual mix of down-home agricultural exhibits, belly-busting food, eyecatching entertainment and powerhouse musical lineups has returned to the Del Mar Fairgrounds for a monthlong engagement with the opening of the 2013 San Diego County Fair. The fair runs through July 4. Touting a theme of “Game On!,” this year’s fair is designed to spotlight classic and nostalgic games and show how these have evolved over the years — from board games and pinball to television, videos and computers — and to demonstrate how technology has enhanced the gaming culture beyond dreams. Of course, the fair has plenty of food
and drink vendors spread across the fairway and the infield track area. And each year, Fair officials spice things up with some very unusual food offerings that, well, can test one’s willingness to break the normal gastronomical barriers. This year, among other items, vendors will be selling Krispy Kreme sloppy Joes; deep-fried, bacon-wrapped pickles; chipotle BBQ beef chips; bacon beer; wild boar kabobs; and waffle dogs. Also new this year is a “Star Trek Exhibition,” an interactive, museumstyle experience involving one of the largest collections of authentic Star Trek artifacts and information ever put on public display, according to Fair officials. For those who can’t get enough of bacon, foodies will be in hog heaven come Sunday, June 16 during the “Big Bite Bacon Fest,” presented by Farmer John. Fair officials said the festival is a fun-filled, walk-around tasting event featuring creative bacon dishes from the best chefs and competitive cooks in the county. Each bacon booth will prepare and serve small plates of savory bacon delights ranging from appetizers to desserts and everything in between. Adult fairgoers can quench their thirst with refreshing bacon-based and baconinspired cocktails and brews. Running throughout the course of the Fair this year will also be a new addition called “The Courage to Remember,” a traveling Holocaust exhibit produced by the Museum of Tolerance, the educational arm of the Simon Wiesenthal Center. The exhibit features 200 exclusive photographs that cannot be seen The 2013 San Diego County Fair opened June 8 with a ton of food, entertainment and music, anywhere else in the world, offering touting a theme of “Game On!” The Fair closes July 4. ENJOY THE BEAUTY OF OLD TOWN Celebrate Flag Day at the Mormon Battalion June 14 – Inaugural Flag Day Event Held June 14 Honoring Active Duty and Retired Military Personnel – The Mormon Battalion Historic Site in Old Town is hosting a special event to celebrate Flag Day on June 14. Several military groups, families and guests will gather at the site for a special program that will honor all military units, starting with a flag-retiring ceremony at 4:45 p.m. The event is free to the public to attend, but reservations are requested. “We are so honored to host this event to pay tribute our nation’s true heroes: the military,”said Mormon Battalion Historic Site Director Ed Seegmiller. “Many military groups will
gather at the battalion for the first time to recognize the brave men and women who sacrifice for us every day.” The event will start behind the Mormon Battalion in the picnic area, where special performances by the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Brass Band and Color Guard will take place after the flag-retiring ceremony. Speeches from high-ranking military officials begin around 5 p.m. Guest speaker and historian, Randy Madsen, will also give a 10-minute presentation about the history of the military. Special recognition will be given to: the Chosin Few, Buffalo Soldiers,Army of the West and the Gold Star Wives of America.
After the event, all guests are invited inside the Mormon Battalion Historic Site for a cake-cutting ceremony. Retired Maj. Donald R. Bennett will cut the cake with his sword, according to tradition. Refreshments will be available as well from Cold Stone Creamery and Fiesta de Reyes. Guests of the event will also get a chance to see displays from the Chosin Few, Buffalo Soldiers,Army of the West and the Family Search Center, a resource for researching your ancestors with professional assistance. Tickets also will be issued to those who wish to take a tour of the historic site after the ceremony. Parking is available across the street
at Heritage Park and at the battalion. Free parking is also available at the CalTrans headquarters, just four blocks from the battalion at 4050 Taylor St. The Mormon Battalion Historic Site is located at 2510 Juan St. Guests should RSVP by calling 619-298-3317 or by emailing saffleck@live.com.

Point Loma athletics accepting Hall of Fame nominations The ninth class of the PLNU Athletic Hall of Fame will be inducted on Sunday, Nov. 24 at the Liberty Station Conference Center at 1 p.m. In the interim, the university’s Hall of Fame Committee is seeking and accepting nominations for that class. Levsen picks up All-West Region honors Point Loma Nazarene University relief pitcher Garret Levsen has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-West Region team as an honorable mention. Levsen, a junior, tied for the PacWest lead with 10 saves to go along with a 2.39 earned-run average. Opponents hit just .186 off him as he yielded just 18 hits in 26.1 innings pitched. The native of Whittier was also tied for second in the PacWest with 21 appearances to go along with a 23-to-9 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Levsen’s season was also notable in the Sea Lions record books. His 10 saves tied him with Robbie Naegele for the second most in a single-season in PLNU history. He was save short of matching Justin Marabeas’ record of 11 saves in a season. PLNU community engagements In the 2012-13 academic year, PLNU student-athletes engaged in both new
and reccurring community engagement events. The estimated combined total of hours spent in both community engagement and service by PLNU student-athletes is 3,200 hours. One of the largest events that PLNU student-athletes participated in this year was Superfest. This is a annual event that invites kids of all ages to come to campus, participate in any sport they choose for about three hours with PLNU students, and then enjoy food and prizes while hearing a message from professional athletes and the pastor of The Rock Church in San Diego. This year, the university served about 700 students at the event. The second-largest event on campus was the first-ever PLNU Make-A-Wish Day and dodgeball tournament. SAAC planned and executed the day to include five different sporting events to attend (men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, men’s and women’s basketball), give-a-ways, Make-A-Wish videos, a special presentation to a Make-A-Wish recipient kid, and a dodgeball tournament open to all students and non-students with an entry fee and all proceeds going to Make-A-Wish. This will be an ongoing and yearly event at PLNU.
Another accomplishment was creating a partnership with Dana Middle School. Student-athletes will have the opportunity to go to the school to play with the kids at lunch hour break, starting in 2013-14. The partnership and details were organized this year and university officials said they look forward to starting the school visits in the fall. The university also partnered with the Point Loma YMCA to send student-athletes there as coaches for various sports teams. As part of the university’s diversity initiative and engagement within campus, SAAC organized the halftime show at a men’s basketball game to showcase the Hawaiian Club. The club performed the hula and then later asked the women’s volleyball team to perform at the annual luau. More Than A One Night Stand was a monthly event open to the entire community. It was organized by studentathletes and supported by SAAC. It was developed to offer a safe place for college students to go and have fun without the pressure often presented by drugs and alcohol at other events. Finally, SAAC started Student-Athlete Game Night. All teams attended and had fun fellowship participating in old-school games like musical chairs and chubby bunny. It is the position of SAAC that community engagement includes the university and other sports teams in addition to those outside the campus. The event prompted plenty of smiles and will be an annual event to help promote the interaction of all teams with each other.
SPORTS SHORTS Workshop set to hone youth volleyball skills A volleyball skills workshop is being offered for boys and girls in the Peninsula area in grades 7-12. Scheduled for the week of June 1721, the 3 to 6 p.m. sessions will be held at Point Loma High School. Varsity boys’ and girls’ head volleyball coach James Sakasegawa will instruct. All skill levels are welcome at the workshop, which will stress a different aspect of the game each day. Registration is $30 per session or $125 for the five-day week. Many of their scores were just several shots over par on major local courses. Mario Villamichel, Wood and Brockett made the cut in the first round City Conference tournament, with Villamichel earning a spot in the match play portion. Fogerty said he was pleased with the performances of his top performers, but added he was equally pleased with the progress made by his newer players. 50-year-old track record broken Senior Sydney Rush set a new PLHS 3 1/2 inches at the San Diego CIF finals. Rush’s jump betters the old mark of 23 feet, 11 3/4 inches set, ironically, the same day in 1963 by both Lyle Schafer and Doug Blanchard. Both were jumping in the annual Easter Relays at Balboa Stadium. Rush’s school record jump was the longest in San Diego County this year and qualified him for the state meet, where he did not place. Rush also tied for the second-best high jump by county preps this year, clearing 6 feet 6 inches.
