While the iconic OB Pier was partially reopened before Memorial Day, Ocean Beach residents debated the future of the deteriorating structure at a town hall where some expressed sticker shock and disapproval for restoring or rebuilding it. “There should be a no-project alternative,” argued environmental attorney Brian Pease at the May 26 Ocean Beach Town Councilsponsored Zoom town hall. “You’re assuming taxpayers will support spending millions of dollars to repair or rebuild the pier. What if people don’t want to rebuild the pier or reopen it? If businesses want the pier rebuilt, maybe they should pay for it.” “That’s a valid question,” replied OBTC president Mark Winkie. “We’ll find out having this forum if you are in the majority and if people want to let it crumble into the ocean. The pier serves the community at large allowing people to really enjoy the ocean up close. From my perspective, we should build a new pier to replace the one we have now.” Over 50% of some 400 respondents in a recent OBTC poll on OB Pier indicated they wanted it repaired for immediate partial

reopening or rebuilt altogether. A total of 45.4% of respondents wanted the pier rehabilitated for full reopening. The survey was conducted online from May 15-25. A recently released, Citycommissioned report by Moffatt & Nichol found the 55-year-old landmark pier has “reached the end of its service life” due to repeated structural damage from seasonal winter storms. “To ensure the continued use of the structure, deficiencies must be addressed,” concluded the Moffatt & Nichol report, which offered three options – repair, rehabilitation, and replacement – for remediation of the pier’s eroding structure. All three

alternatives would be costly with repair estimates starting at about $50 million. The two-hour special pier meeting included comments from Mayor Todd Gloria and District 2 Councilmember and Council President Jennifer Campbell. “The council president and I spent some time with our professional staff evaluating what our options are, what we can do to protect the public’s safety, but hopefully reopen the pier in some fashion,” said Gloria. “The challenge for us is that fully addressing the needs of the OB Pier is going to be extremely expensive, and it will take a significant lift to find

the funds to do this. My team has been working aggressively with our government partners to try and identify government funding to do this.” “The City worked hard to reopen the pier so it would be safe,” said Campbell. “We all know OB Pier is an iconic landmark in San Diego beloved by locals and visitors from around the world. Many people have good memories of the pier for the past 55 years. We really want to get to work to make sure it stays around even longer.” The community was also briefed during the town hall on OB Pier’s status by Ralph Teyssler, a structural engineer and son of Leonard Teyssler, the original contractor who built OB Pier in 1966. “My father had to develop special tools to build this pier including using a crane,” noted Teyssler adding, “It was very time consuming, though the pier was completed in 14 months.” Discussing the Moffatt report’s three alternatives for the pier Teyssler pointed out, “With repair, it’s not going to be as complicated on the environmental end of things as building a brand new pier.” Added Teyssler, “I propose starting with remedial repairs now, and plan for a new pier.”

Noting standard practice for such infrastructure projects is to put them out to bid and award the contract to the lowest responsible bidder, Teyssler suggested a different approach. “I’d like to propose a collaborative environment with the engineers and contractors involved in the design up-front,” he said. “What I would hope to achieve, if we do a new pier, is that we would build it to last for another 125 years using innovative new concrete technology.” During public Q&A on the pier, OBMA executive director Denny Knox noted: “We’ve started a pier working group with a list of people with special expertise that we want to get involved. Raising private funding is huge for this. It isn’t just OB that uses this pier but all of San Diego. Hopefully, we’ll get a very strong contingent together and start the working group.” Kevin Hasting of Ocean Beach Planning Board suggested the community be intricately involved throughout the entire process of pier remediation. “The community seems to be involved in the very first preliminary steps,” he said. “We want to be involved in those key design decisions.” Read more online at sdnews.com

Good neighbors are doing more for one another these days. Some, like Jerry Gallagher and Jonathan Abing, have even gone so far as to turn to be a good neighbor into a business. The two men, who both live in Sunset Cliffs and have wives who are attorneys, have pooled their talents to start an enterprise helping seniors with essential personal and household services. Abing is a licensed tree contractor and a jack-of-all-trades adept at a range of handyman services. Gallagher, a national certified guardian working on his California professional fiduciary license, is also trained as a medical first responder with firefighter 1 and 2 certifications. The pair are establishing themselves performing necessary household tasks for clients. “When COVID hit I was furloughed from the sales job I’d been doing for 15 years and I interviewed for months with different companies but no one was hiring,” said Gallagher, a Point Loma Nazarene grad, about the origin of their new enterprise named Good Neighbor Trusted Home Services. In Memory: Stephanie Gwyn Raddatz It is with heavy hearts we convey the passing of Stephanie Gwyn Raddatz. She left us at 4:00am on Saturday, May 15 at the age of 51. She lived an adventurous life rich with experience and intimate friendships. Our bright star faded too early, yet shall forever shine strong in our hearts. Raised in Holdrege, Nebraska, Stephanie’s high grades earned her a scholarship to the University of Redlands. She studied in Paris in fall 1991 and went on to receive college degrees in both Art History and Philosophy. She continued her study of Art History at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Throughout life she maintained a passion for art museums, literature, music and film. Her favorites included Van Gogh, John Singer Sargent, classical piano, plus cult phenoms the Pixies, Neil Diamond, and Alex Trebek. Stephanie was Prince’s #1 fan, once lucky enough to see the Purple One give a rare late-night performance at Paisley Park. Moving on a whim from Santa Barbara to Seattle, Stephanie met her future husband Kurt in 2000. The pair were locked tight together from the start. Drawn back to sun and sand, the couple relocated to San Diego in 2006. They were joined in marriage on October 4, 2014 in Joshua Tree, California. New Order’s “Ceremony” proclaimed the moment of their union. Stephanie will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, sharp mind, and the easygoing manner she so effortlessly projected. Most people will remember Stephanie for her vivacious laugh—often accompanied by an impish smile. She was both funny and fun-loving, both kind-hearted and playful. She put forth a vibe of casual coolness that made it easy for people to engage with her, probably why she fostered so many friendships ranging from San Diego to Santa Barbara to Seattle. Despite her cheerful personality, Stephanie was a strong, fiercely independent woman. Her approach to life was bold and courageous. She didn’t like to be told what to do by anyone. She never wanted things sugarcoated, but strove to see things for how they were. Stephanie was remarkably self-aware and could easily hold her ground debating a topic, though she was in no way an argumentative person. She was willful but rarely stubborn. Her pragmatic mind saw the value of compromise, when appropriate. Stephanie was a free spirit—a true Obecian (Ocean Beach local). She loved flip-flops and tortugas and the warm sun on her face. In many ways she was very much a tomboy, yet enjoyed flowery skirts. She was often more at ease chatting with the guys than the girls. And yet she had a way with children, of making them smile in her arms. Stephanie practiced a zest for life. Her great joys were swimming pools and gardens, VW Westfalias and rollercoasters, and especially tube-floating on a lazy river. Stephanie remained an analog girl to the core, always preferring the simpler, more classic version. She despised cell phones. She loved to bury herself in a newspaper, often back-in-the-day commandeering a table at Woodstock’s Pizza. She maintained a curious mind and was a voracious reader. Her favorite writer was Joan Didion, whose words are poignant and powerful and feminine, just like she was.

She displayed a fervor for starting new projects. Not all got far off the ground, but that was okay because there were always other exciting new frontiers to explore. She loved to travel. In addition to Ireland and Belize, Mexico City and the Oaxacan coast were two of her favorite destinations. She built a library of travel books and planned to retire as an expat. Stephanie demonstrated genuine compassion for others. She frequently donated to the San Diego Food Bank and Doctors Without Borders. For the last five years she was employed at the San Diego Humane Society where she dedicated her efforts to the mission of supporting animals. She could often be found strolling among the cat habitats and rabbit enclosures, which brought her great inner peace and joy. Family and friends will forever picture her bright blue eyes and ever-present smile. The world is a much lesser place without her. We mourn her passing and will forever cherish the love and laughter she shared with each of us. Stephanie is survived by her husband and beloved companion of 21 years, Kurt Stolle; their 16-year, 16-pound orange tabby, Carlito; her younger sisters Jennifer Kingsley and Melissa Sachs; her brother David, and parents Bruce and Sandra. She also leaves behind a vast number of close, lifelong friends. All shall miss her dearly. The story behind San Diego’s first and only Kids Ninja Warrior indoor obstacle course is inspiring for the tenacity of its owners. Armonty and Kim Bryant, a former NFL player, and a collegiate gymnast and athlete, respectively, opened KidWonder - Ninja Warrior, Gymnastics, Camp, and Pre-K Prep, in February 2020. But at least we kept them active and moving and not behind (computer) screens.” And now with people returning to indoor activities, KidWonder is back in business. “We just sent eight kids to a Regional American Ninja Warrior Competition in Arizona, where we had two kids qualify for UNAA World Series Championships in Vegas in July,” said Kim. “This is a huge accomplishment after all that we have gone through with the pandemic, and these kids only training for the year and now able to compete at a national level. We are so excited and so proud of them.” KidWonder proteges Levi Jones, 12, qualified for the junior ninja competition, as did Luke McCarty, 8, who won his age group. “We will also be hosting a UNAA Area Qualifier, which will be open to the public at our gym May 8,” added Kim. American Ninja Warrior Junior is an American children's sports competition game show on Universal Kids that premiered in 2018. It is a head-to-head

competition with multiple rounds and triple elimination each episode. There are no teams, and each child competes for themselves. Ninja contestants are divided into age groups. Boys and girls compete with each other without segregation. Five runs in each age group are played to determine the episode's winner in each age group, for a total of three winners per episode. With new obstacles for its indoor course, KidWonder is continuing to train its charges as they strive to master each ninja course obstacle. “They’re trying to make it an Olympic event,” pointed out Kim of ninja’s growing popularity

adding, “We switch out our obstacles all the time to make it trickier, different.” Despite the trials and tribulations, Kim said they’re still committed to evolving KidWonder along with the junior ninja sport. “I grew up in gyms, trained all my life,” she noted. “We thought, ‘Kids are bouncing all over the house anyway, why not put them in a safe, padded environment to bounce around and learn some things, a sport, and then get a scholarship?’ We added the education part of it so pre-school kids are learning while they’re improving.” Read more online at sdnews.com

No better business tandem exists in Ocean Beach than OB Brewery and OB Java sharing space at 5047 Newport Ave. near the beach. Jungle Java, which previously inhabited the courtyard spot, gave way to new owners during the pandemic in September 2020. OB Brewery owner Mike Tajran purchased the coffee shop next door creating a synergy in the courtyard between the two enterprises which complement each other nicely, sharing space as a coffee shop by day, and a beer garden at night. So far it’s been a winning combination. “Our weekday sales have been better than they’ve been in the

last five years,” said Scott Watkins of OB Brewery, who oversees the dual concept, which is prepping for eventual brewery expansion and the long-anticipated return of Newport Pizza & Ale House previously across the street. “Our business is up 30%, 40%. People are excited to get out. We’re reaping the benefits of having a lot of patio space.” The patio space is deep with room enough for several picnic tables, a plethora of plants, and a stage in the back where live entertainment is expected to resume June 26 with the OB Vibe community event. Dan Nichols and Johnathan Ricks are two of four employees working outdoors in the OB Java courtyard. “We’ve got a full espresso menu, light fare with a big selection of bagels, smoothies, and acai bowls,”

Of the food menu, Ricks noted: “We’ve gotten a few people addicted to ham and cheese. So many people come in for our lox. We have breakfast toast with banana, honey, and cinnamon. We also have a unique smoothie, the kick starter, cold brew with vegan protein powder mixed with a banana, granola, and milk that our more athletic customers like, especially after a workout. butter and it will keep you going all day.” Watkins said the coffee house and the brewery are a matched set. “I see a lot of people come in here and eat at 8 a.m., work until 2 or 3 p.m., then turn their computer off, order a beer, and they’re here all day,” he said adding there is a real sense of community with surrounding businesses, especially The Holding Company across the street. “I’d rather have more businesses in here for people to choose from and make it a destination location versus just us,” said Watkins. “People ask me, ‘Aren’t you worried

about The Holding Company?’ We are a brewery that offers good bar food, they are an upscale cocktail place with high-end food that has live music. People come over to us for happy hour, a burger, and a pint. They go over there for a couple of cocktails and dance to a DJ.” Watkins is looking forward to the prospect of Newport Pizza someday soon turning their business duo into a trio. “It works out well because this is the same owner,” he said. “We’re all in this together, have the same goal: keeping the place clean, running smoothly and the guests coming back.”
