National Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 15, and in Point Loma there are three pit stops on the way to work for cyclists and two on the way home from work. Originated by the League of American Bicyclists in 1956, Bike to Work Day is a part of Bike-toWork Week, which is in turn part of National Bike Month. The annual event, held during spring across the United States and Canada, promotes the bicycle as an option for commuting to work. On May 15, Mixte Communications, at 4827 Voltaire St., will be a morning pit stop from 6 to 9 a.m. “We'll have games, prizes and food provided by The Wine Pub,” said Mixte CEO Jamie Hampton, noting the bike train from Mixte to downtown will begin at 7:45 a.m. Hampton said Mixte’s ride will be at a casual pace and is meant for those biking to work for the first time to get them comfortable on

their bikes. Later, a Bike from Work Day event will be at The Wine Pub, at 2907 Shelter Island Drive, from 5 to 8 p.m. Bikers will be greeted with an extended happy hour and high-fives. Leading up to Bike to Work Day, national, regional and local bicycle

“We won!” was the happy chant from members of Point Loma’s La Playa Trail Association. A humbling honor indeed: In the category of Community History, the group earned one of several annual historic preservation awards from the City of San Diego Historical Resources Board. “La Playa Trail Association has become known for its lecture series promoting community history and preservation,” says Myra Herrmann, senior planner and tribal liaison for the City of San Diego. “Because of the outreach done through these lectures, members from all parts of the community are able to learn about our past and our present, which connects our Peninsula’s past to the broader San Diego history.” Everyone is welcome to attend the next lecture in the series, slated for 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 26 at Point Loma Assembly, 3035 Talbot St. Returning for a second presentation is Rick Kennedy, professor of history at Point Loma Nazarene University. He will present “The La Playa Trail and its Fellow California Trails: A Comparison of San Diego, Dana Point, San Pedro, Santa Barbara, Monterey and San Francisco.” A $10 donation at the assembly door is suggested. Let’s take a peek at some history along the Trail. In 1931, soon after the founding of the San Diego Historical Society, historians John and Winifred Davidson and architect Richard Requa began to define and mark the oldest commercial trail in the western United States. If you live or work in Point Loma, you travel some part of that early path. It begins at the landing site of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and the Spanish Fort Guijarros on Ballast Point and weaves along what is now Rosecrans Street. It then stretches to the old Mission San Diego. In 2005, several Point Loma residents formed the La Playa Trail Association to carry on the work of earlier trailblazers. Today, 17 civic-minded members con-

Take a walk along the trail and find the more recent additions: The Roseville Marker on the sidewalk near Union Bank (1175 Rosecrans St.) and the monument to the Chinese Fishing and Shipbuilding Industry by the water at La Playa. The La Playa Trail boasts some 75 registered national, state and city historic landmarks along the route and more than 400 sites of historic interest. Historian and association secretary Charles Best documents these sites and contributes ribtickling historical minutes worthy of any good history journal. Association president Klonie Kunzel says, “Our association members are extremely proud of the Historical Resources Board Award. We are all committed to telling the story of the historic La Playa Trail, adding to the rich antiquity of Point Loma. An awards ceremony will take place on May 28 at San Diego Civic Concourse, and we’ll all be there to accept.” Posters created by each of the nine award recipients will be on public display in the lobby of the City Administration Building May 20 to 28, commemorating National Historic Preservation Month. means of transportation,” said coalition executive director Andy Hanshaw. “It’s part of a national day — and movement — which has evolved into bike month all of May.” Noting cycling is “a great way to get around,” Hanshaw pointed out that upward of 9,000 San Diegans took part in last year’s Bike to Work Day. “The expectations are even higher this year,” he said, noting that “more and more people want to bike more in their daily lives.” A daily bicycling commuter himself, Hanshaw added that “We’re asking folks to take the pledge to go by bike to work on May 15, and we’re asking them to register online at gobybikesd.com to be able to win cool prizes and other good things.” According to studies, as many as half or more of the American work force lives within five miles of the workplace, which means it can actually take less time to get to work by biking instead of driving. Cycling enthusiasts add biking can also lower stress levels and boost immune function. Some reasons for commuting to work by bike: • It saves money. A 2012 Forbes magazine article reported that "The average annual operating cost of a bicycle is $308, compared to $8,220 for the average car.” • It serves a dual purpose. By commuting on two wheels instead of four, the rider will arrive at his or her destination while getting an effective cardiovascular and strength-building workout.

Red Sails Inn a traditional seafood place BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON There are many reasons why people come back to Red Sails Inn restaurantbar in Point Loma. “I’m like a lot of restaurants. We want to stay fresh,” admitted owner Bill Dargitz, who’s been at the helm of Red Sails, at 2614 Shelter Island Drive, the past 22 years. “But the thing about us people like is that we’re kind of old-school. Our menu doesn’t change very often. If you had calamari here 10 years ago, you can come in and it will taste and be prepared exactly the same way.” The waterfront location and the traditional menu are just the start of Red Sails' appeal. “Definitely, our big draw is that patio,” said Dargitz, pointing at the 22-table deck, where people were being served breakfast while gazing out at moored boats the day after Mother’s Day. “This is such a comfortable place that people come back for the people as much as they do for the product,” said Dargitz. And then there’s the restaurant staff. “One of the reasons they’re coming in is because of my staff,” said Dargitz, noting, “My short-time waitress has been here five years. My bar manager has been here 32 years. I have waitresses who’ve been here more than 20 years. People come in and ask for them by name.”

Red Sails has been a fixture in San Diego since the ’20s and ’30s. The restaurant started out at the foot of G Street downtown before moving to its present location. Dargitz started out in Seattle before his restaurateur dad enticed him down to join him in San Diego. “I was vacuuming floors when I was 4 years old,” said Dargitz, adding he previously bussed tables, washed dishes, waited tables and did some management for his father, who’d partnered with Red Sails’ previous owner, nearly 80 years old and looking to get out of the business. “I had been doing maintenance work for a hotel for 11 years,” Dargitz said, “but my dad called me and said, ‘I really need some help.' So my wife and I came down with our 5-year-old. He’s 27 now, married, happy and a CalPoly master’s grad who works at Salk Institute. Everything worked out wonderfully.” Red Sails is known for specializing in seafood — swordfish, halibut, sea bass, mahi mahi. But that’s just the half of it. “We do a really good lunch,” pointed out Dargitz, adding that “half the menu is just sandwiches and burgers. The

other half is seafood, fish and chips, et cetera. But we do a breakfast now that we serve until 2 p.m.” Dargitz said a Red Sails breakfast can be either traditional, bacon and eggs, or nontraditional, featuring delicacies like crab legs or veggie Benedict. The restaurateur said customers can customize their meals. “If we have a product, I’ll sell it to you, meaning if you come in and order calamari with pasta, we’ll see what we’ve got,” Dargitz said. “Why not? We’re not a real stickler on you can’t substitute.” And the oceanside restaurant is also known for its Louis salads, which Dargitz noted are impressive. “People say, ‘Oh my God, I can’t eat that much,'” he said. Red Sails is Dargitz’s pride and joy. “I love this place,” he confessed.

“There’s no 90-degree angles here. There’s no ferns hanging in the corner. And we get a million-dollar view every time we come to work.” Dargitz said he does a good tourist business in the summer, but he added, “Our bread and butter is the locals. We’re a locals hangout where people go for a beer, a steak or an omelet.” Looking ahead, Dargitz wants to do more with craft brews. Right now, he has four or five brews on tap. He’d like to expand to eight or 10. The restaurateur said he doesn’t mind having customers drift in. “If they just want to come over and have a beer out on the patio, that makes me feel good: They’re here,” he said, noting Red Sails is open every day of the year except Christmas.

Bali Hai Restaurant, known for its views and its Polynesian and Asianinspired cuisine, has renovated its dock and has set its Dock and Dine program in time for summer. “We anticipate a very busy dock this summer,” said Tommy Baumann, restaurant manager. “Our dock also accommodates a drop-off spot for water taxis who travel from downtown offering residents a unique way to travel to dinner.” In addition to the revamped dock, Bali Hai offers views of San Diego Bay, ample parking and a Polynesian motif, with tiki artifacts and live music throughout the week. Dinner is served Mondays through Thursdays and Sundays from 5 to 9 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 5 to 10 p.m. Bali Hai is located at 2230 Shelter Island Drive. Known as Shore Buddies, the new business venture was started by Malte Niebelschuetz. “We founded Shore Buddies in summer 2014 right here in San Diego,” Niebelschuetz said. “We take recycled plastic bottles to create 12-inch plush animals which represent local coastal wildlife. We donate $1 with every purchase directly to the Surfrider Foundation, San Diego County chapter, to protect our oceans, waves and beaches.” Shore Buddies come with authentic sounds built in of the marine mammals they depict. Niebelschuetz came to San Diego about four years ago from his native Germany. He said Shore Buddies is a new concept he came up with after seeing “all the souvenir shops right on the boardwalk. I thought, ‘There has to be a way to give something back to the com-

munity.’ So I came up with Shore Buddies as an environmentally friendly way to make stuffed animals from recycled materials and donate a portion of the proceeds to local nonprofit agencies to protect the ocean and shoreline.” The Shore Buddies brand was started with three different animals: the California gull, the common dolphin and the harbor seal. The hang-tags of each stuffed animal include information about what everybody can do to protect the ocean and coastal wildlife. “Our products are beloved by tourists and locals alike,” said Niebelschuetz.

The Patio Group to bring ‘backyard cooking’ to Liberty Station BY FRANK SABATINI JR. | THE BEACON A dining concept encompassing all the elements of a large-scale cookout is coming to Point Loma when The Patio Group completes its most ambitious project to date at the old firehouse in Liberty Station. Slated to open by late summer, Fireside by the Patio will devote more than half its 10,000-square-foot space to the outdoors, where customers can witness their meals prepared on a variety of grills fueled by mesquite, apple and peach woods. “We’ll have smokers, pizza ovens and a Yakitori station. Gas won’t be used for any of them,” says executive chef John Medall, hinting that he’ll roast whole pigs on the weekends. The pet-friendly grounds will also boast an al fresco bar and four fire pits in addition to copious flora, which has become an aesthetic trademark within the company’s other restaurants, The Patio on Lamont Street in Pacific Beach and The Patio on Goldfinch in Mission Hills. Inside the 80-year-old structure, construction is under way for a communal dining area, a second bar and a kitchen earmarked for prep work. A few firehouse vestiges will remain, such as the station’s original doors and roofline. “We’re dealing with a historic building, and we will celebrate that,” says Patio Group owner Gina Champion-Cain. “Unlike our complete redos at Lamont and Goldfinch, this will go a lot faster, because we already have a gorgeous, beautiful shell in place.”

Medall plans to uphold several core dishes popular at Lamont and Goldfinch in an effort to “breed familiarity.” They include ahi poke tacos, Spanish octopus and the beef and bleu flatbread mantled by New York steak, creamy Gorgonzola and roasted mushrooms. But the menu will be ultimately defined by meats and locally sourced vegetables cooked under the open skies with smokers and grills. sees plating up meals for two with a choice of sides such as fire-roasted corn and sweet potato fries. “I have a lot of ideas,” he says, “and we’ll be trying all different things.” Champion-Cain says the notion of launching a project in the historic firehouse materialized when Liberty Station’s property management firm, The Corky McMillin Cos., presented the idea based on her other successful, green-inspired restaurants. “They thought we’d be a great addition to the north end of Liberty Station,” she says. “And when we saw the building and its backyard areas, we thought so too. This is a concept that wouldn’t work in a traditional shopping center, because most of the cooking will be done outside.” The Patio Group also owns The Swell Café in Mission Beach and The Front Porch culinary shop in Mission Hills. It will open a commissary kitchen and coffee-roasting facility by late summer on Hancock Street in Point Loma. Fireside will serve lunch and dinner daily, plus weekend brunch. to the Dickens Street corner where the familiar shop sits. It was in cold contrast to the warmth and gentle humanity of the Paulerio brothers. And so, with reluctance, Louie asked his son to print a small sign that the brothers taped to that glass front door. The sign tells the sad news… their last day of business will be Saturday, May 23. For the popular octogenarians and hundreds of loyal customers, some of whom had their first haircuts in the shop as babies, the closing will mark the end of an era. "Somebody's bought the property and probably wants to remodel it," concluded Louie. With their final day approaching, Louie and Virgil shared some memories. Their first haircuts in 1960 were priced at $1.75, and they paid a monthly rent of $125. While business has been mostly steady over the years, the brothers endured two rough spells. "At one time, we had the hippie movement, when nobody came for a haircut," recalled Louie, "and we used to have a lot of people from NTC (Naval Training Center) before they closed it." Everyone who passed through the doors for a haircut or trim was valued, while some were also well-known. "We had Mr. Frankie Laine (a popular folk singer, songwriter and actor who lived in Point Loma), many doctors, attorneys and judges coming here for many years. But many of them have passed away," Virgil recalls.

Indeed, a framed publicity photo of Laine, who died in 2007, with a nowfaded handwritten inscription, highlights walls that could easily double as a local history museum. A variety of photos cover every square inch of two walls in the small shop. They include portraits of naval officers, local yachtsmen, child actor Austyn Myers, sailboats, tuna seiners, the annual Portuguese Festa, the submarine U.S.S. Jefferson City, Admiral Ulysses S. Grant Sharp and a panorama photo of the 1941 class of Point Loma High School. One framed photo shows Louie giving toddler Mark Moffat a first haircut, while another shows Moffat, now 33 and a federal firefighter, posing with billionaire Warren Buffett at an investors meeting. Hundreds of postcards, sent by longtime customers from vacation spots, serve as a colorful mosaic on two other walls. One postcard shows a picturesque waterfront town and has "Madeira" printed across an azure sky. "That's where we came from," said Virgil of the famed Portugal city. But it

turns out the brothers took different paths to their Rosecrans Street shop. Louie immigrated in 1947 through Ellis Island, later serving in the Korean War. He entered barber college afterward. Virgil clearly recalls his arrival in the U.S. "May 13, 1949," he said with a smile. "I went to Boston because my aunt lived there. Later, I went (tuna) fishing in San Diego for a few years, but there was a strike that lasted eight months when the canneries were buying tuna from Japan instead of us. I went to barber school during the strike and then came to work with my brother." Since the siblings teamed up, each has taken a one-week vacation each year while the other tends the shop. They are looking forward to the extra time they will have. "I want to go to Portugal to visit my family, and my brother probably will do the same thing," Virgil said as Louie nodded in agreement. And there will be time to work on their houses. Louie (Point Loma) and Virgil (Ocean Beach) will be doing some home maintenance but also indulging in their favorite activities of walking and exercising, perhaps keys to their thin bodies and good health. "We can do anything we want!" Louie proclaimed with a grin. But while their shop's closing under such impersonal terms saddens the octogenarians, they also remain insightful. After pausing for a moment, Louie Paulerio said, "It's really a blessing in disguise.” Virgil Paulerio nodded in agreement.

Portuguese Festa May 17-24 The 105th Portuguese Festa do Divino Espirito Santo (Feast of the Holy Spirit), said to be San Diego's oldest ethnic celebration, will be held Sunday, May 17 through Sunday, May 24 on the grounds of UPSES Portuguese Hall, 2818 Avenida de Portugal, and St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1140 Evergreen St. The Portuguese people have been celebrating the feast for the last 700 years amid the lore of Queen St. Isabel, who was said to

have rescued her countrymen from starvation. The festival has been mounted in San Diego since the city's first Portuguese families settled here in 1884; it was formally organized in 1910. SD airport authority named Recycler of the Year The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, which owns and operates San Diego International Airport, was recently named a Recycler of the Year by the City of San Diego for the ninth consecutive time at a ceremony at the San Diego Zoo. The award recognizes key advancements in waste reduction and recycling. The Airport Authority has received the award 11 times in the past 13 years. In 2014, San Diego International Airport diverted nearly 100,000 tons of waste from landfills, including 98,000 tons in construction waste and 1,243 tons of other recyclable materials recovered from the waste stream. Not counting the construction waste, the airport authority recycled 18 percent more waste in 2014 compared with 2013 and 47 percent more than in 2012. Overall, 2014 recycling efforts resulted in $46,566 in disposal cost savings.

San Diego a top city for electric vehicles ChargePoint – the world’s largest electric vehicle charging network – has released a list of the top 10 friendliest metropolitan areas for electric vehicle drivers. San Diego was No. 4 on the list, while the San Francisco Bay Area (including San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose) led the nation, followed by Los Angeles, Seattle and Honolulu. Although Los Angeles leads the nation in terms of registered electric vehicles (nearly 57,000), the San Francisco Bay Area takes top billing after accounting for population differences (more than 48,000 electric vehicles). The Padres recently signed veteran pitcher James Shields to a four-year contract worth $75 million. Shields currently has a 4-0 record, with 55 strikeouts, one behind National League leader Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Shields' fastball has been clocked at 91 to 94 miles an hour. May 5, Pointer batters faced Madison High right-hander Imani Abdullah. The 6-foot, 5-inch, 205-pound senior, being evaluated by a group of professional scouts armed with radar guns, threw 94-mile-an-hour fastballs, holding the hosts to two hits in a complete-game victory that ran his record to 6-1, lowering his earned run average to 0.54 and increasing his strikeout total to 93 in 64.1 innings. Pointer hitters, understandably, had significant difficulty, managing just two hits off Abdullah as the Warhawks took the rubber game of the three-game Western League series by a 4-1 score and also prevented the Pointers from leaping into first place as the league season winds down. Instead, the Pointers find themselves in a tie for second (13-8 overall, 6-2 in league) with the Warhawks (17-9, 8-2). Beer Can races begin in the bay this month Summer brings a familiar sight and a great tradition back to San Diego Bay, as more than 100 sailboats will take over San Diego Bay at 6 p.m. each Wednesday in the annual Beer Can Summer Series. Presented by the Cortez Racing Association and Silver Gate Yacht Club, the Beer Can Summer Series returns for its 36th year for 10 weeks beginning on May 27. In the home of the best and most competitive sailing in the world, the annual series is one of the largest annual sailing events in Southern California, with more than a hundred sailboats of different sizes and handicaps taking to bay each week throughout the summer. The Beer Can Series got its name from its casual origins — a bunch of sailors taking advantage of the longer summer days to race for fun after work in the middle of the week, perhaps with a brew or two in hand. MUSIC & DANCE After two decades, Kimm Rogers finds inspiration for new album BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON Ocean Beach has become known, in part, because of the wealth of artists and musicians that live in the area. Some come to meet and work with like minds, some for the ocean, some for family obligations, but in any case, it’s resulted in a unique melting pot of talent that’s second to none in Southern California. One notable transplant, former Island Records artist, singer-songwriter Kimm Rogers, has lived in the area for nearly a decade but has remained under the radar, only now emerging back into the music community full blast, releasing this month her first album in 23 years, “Where the Pavement Grows.” Rogers arrived in San Diego on New Year’s Day of 2006. “I had been building a music program for adults with disabilities in Albuquerque, N.M.,” she said. “But after three years, my husband and I were needed to help out his aging parents in Ocean Beach, so we moved here.” Rogers had been here before. “I had lived in San Diego a long time ago when my family relocated here after living in Nashville for a bit. I was a bartender up in Crest, and that is where I met my husband. We later relocated to Los Angeles, as I wanted to try and see how my music would fare up there.” Rogers has nothing but love for her new neighborhood, though for the moment she’s played only a showcase gig at Winston’s “a while back. I love OB. I hope to find more places that I can walk to and play for the summer.” She notes she does play to large gath-

erings in the area, though not in the usual ways. “I do sing to quite a large crowd every Friday at Ocean Beach Elementary,” she said. “I wrote a song based on a list that a teacher gave me. It’s called 'Catch The Wave,' and all the kids and parents sing along during our morning assembly. So I guess you could say I have a regular gig here in OB,” Rogers laughed. “As far as the area, what’s not to love? The beautiful ocean cliffs, the water, I can walk to anything, seriously a gorgeous, gorgeous place.” After more than two decades away from recording, what inspired this new album? “Lots of things,” Rogers said. “Rain, love, expectations, disappointments, aging, rising above the day-today to find meaning, the moon, impermanence, trying to find my way in a world that seems increasingly complex,” she continued. “When I was a kid, one of my favorite poems was Shel Silverstein’s ‘Where The Sidewalk Ends.’ Kids are encouraged to go ‘where the grass grows soft and white.’ ‘Where the Pavement Grows’ seems to sum up where we are as adults. With our jobs and our ambitions and our ‘get this get that live your life in seconds flat’ mentality we rarely have the time to dream ‘when everything that surrounds us is so concrete.’” While no release event has been scheduled in San Diego yet, there will be a CD release show in Los Angeles on June 18 at El Cid. “Rather than label it a record release party, I would prefer it to be a celebration of my musical life, as

June is also the 25th anniversary of my first release, 'Soundtrack of My Life,'” Rogers said. “I also hope to celebrate the many people in my life who continue to support me in my musical journey. I am so grateful to so many folks.” It promises to be quite a celebration, then, as Rogers has wanted to be a musician as long as she can remember. “I started playing violin by age 7,” she recalled. “Then my mom got a guitar and taught herself how to play, using Bob Dylan and Buffy Sainte-Marie songbooks with chords, so I just helped myself to her books and her guitar and started messing around myself.” It’s clear that after her hiatus from recording, Rogers is happy to be back working on her music. Winners Announced at Fiesta de Reyes Folklorico Competition 13 to 17 years old, was also won by a group from Fresno. The team from Clovis West High School won first place in the category for their performance of “El Cuadro,” which originated in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. In the children’s category for those 12 and under, the top spot was a tie between Corazon Purepecha of San Diego for “La Danza de los Viejitos,” a traditional dance originated in the state of Michoacan, and Grupo Folklorico Orgullo Mexicano of Long Beach for their performance of traditional mestizo dances of Sinaloa. In its sixth year, this competition was the biggest yet. Sixteen teams from Sacramento, Fresno, Long Beach and San Diego County entered

Ballet Folklorico is a traditional Latin American dance that emphasizes local folk culture with ballet characteristics. Children, teen-agers and adults competed in the three categories for the competition title and cash prizes. Dance instructor Luis

Oceguera of Oceanside produced the event on behalf of Fiesta de Reyes and Felipe Castaneda of Univision entertained the crowd as master of ceremonies. Fiesta de Reyes under the direction of Chuck Ross, spearheaded the effort to expand this year’s competition and to attract teams from all over California. Choreographer John Malashock, artistic director of Malashock Dance, and composer Krishan Oberoi, director of the SACRA/PROFANA chorus, are teaming to create “Snakeskin,” a dance drama inspired by the plays and characters of Tennessee Williams. Performances of the world-premiere collaboration, in partnership with the UCSD Department of Theatre & Dance, will take place at UCSD’s Forum Theater Friday through Sunday, May 15 to 17. The story is told through song, instrumental music and choreography. Eight Malashock dancers will portray the characters, while eight musicians (doubling as vocalists) deliver Oberoi’s score amid its dark, earthy tone, fusing elements of folk/rock and classicalinfluenced instrumental music. The drama recasts a mythic story, set in a small Southern town, where flawed characters struggle with themes of bigotry, isolation, class warfare, eroticism and narrowmindedness. “'Snakeskin’ is a timeless tale,” Oberoi said in a statement, “and the characters represent primal forces not unlike those in a Greek tragedy. But the Plum Street house is just one of many unfinished eyesores all over San Diego. The court system cannot possibly respond to them all on a case-by-case basis. That is like trying to put out a raging forest fire with a fly swatter." Linney feels the real answer to the situation is “a stronger city policy or municipal code provision to prevent these abuses from happening and with a mechanism that guarantees construction will be finished. We ask City Attorney Jan Goldsmith and District 2 Councilmember Lorie Zapf to join in that effort.” A total of seven misdemeanor counts have been filed in San Diego Superior Court against Mendiola.The counts all carry a sentence of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Charges against Mendiola include maintaining a construction fence and storing materials on the street, as well as

maintaining steel for a retaining wall and stairs on the public right-of-way in front of the property without a public right-of-way encroachment agreement, in violation of the municipal code. The seven counts also include allowing the existence of a vacant structure that created a public nuisance. “[Mendiola] didn’t diligently pursue the work to completion,” states the court case against him. “He also did not remove and demolish the building and structure within 180 calendar days from the date of written notice from the city, as required.” At a court status hearing on April 28, Mendiola showed proof that he was thus far in compliance with the terms and conditions of the plea agreement. He obtained a public right-of-way permit on Monday, April 27.

In order to remain in compliance with the court order, he must remove the staircase and other encroachments from the public right-of-way and replace the sidewalk by July 27. He must also complete all work on the property by Monday, Sept. 28. In order to ensure his ongoing compliance with the terms and conditions of his probation, and to monitor his progress, the next status hearing is set for Aug. 4 at 8:30 a.m.in Department 3 of the San Diego Superior Court, Central Division. The city’s chief administrative officer will continue to diligently monitor the case to ensure Mendiola is compliance with the law. Attempts to contact Mendiola were unsuccessful. It is believed he lives in Mexico.

The festival will feature two things that San Diego excels at: science and beer. "San Diego is well known for its beer, but our city also has world-class scientists and science institutions," said Erilynn Heinrichsen, postdoctoral fellow at University of California, San Diego, and city coordinator for San Diego Pint of Science. "This is a great opportunity to showcase all the scientific minds we have in San Diego while enjoying a pint in a social setting." Pint of Science is an international organization that aims to foster community interest in science through palatable presentations over a beer. The 2015 Pint of Science festival takes place in eight different countries around the globe, with nine U.S. cities being represented, including New York, Chicago, San Francisco and San Diego. All events in the 2015 International Pint of Science Festival are scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, May 18, through Wednesday, May 20. The talks take place at nine different bars, across three days, with 24 different science speakers and topics. Bruges-Dementia Friendly? I’ve just returned from Bruges, Belgium which has the distinction of being the most ‘Dementia Friendly’ city in Europe. So what exactly is Dementia Friendly and should San Diego do more? On the surface, I must say Bruges did not seem any different insofar as accessibility or friendly for someone with Dementia and I think anyone with Dementia would be challenged to negotiate the market square! However, a number of community organizations, shopkeepers and local government have made a difference to those with Dementia trying to lead normal lives. Some of these initiatives are: • The police know who have Dementia through a registry which helps them find wandering individuals • Shopkeepers display a knotted red hankerchief meaning they offer compassionate assistance • A local choir (Foton) is made up entirely of people with Dementia Undoubtedly, there are other measures and I can’t help thinking residents of San Diego could benefit from similar initiatives. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation recently published an article outlining efforts in the city of York, England and here’s what they have to say about criteria for ‘Dementia Friendly’. • Find their way around and feel safe in their locality, community or city • Access local facilities they are used to (such as banks, shops, cafes, cinemas and post offices, as well as health and social care services) • Maintain social networks that make them feel still part of their community. In the field of pediatric dentistry, it has long been debated whether the dentist should allow parents to be in the treatment room with their children or insist they remain in the reception area. The most important thing to remember when bringing your child to the dentist is that they will pick up on how you seem to be feeling. SUMMER FUN Summer fun with Bianca – dodging obstacles at VAVi's Wipeout Run BY BIANCA WEINSTEIN | THE BEACON

Over this past weekend, the Pacific Beach-based company VAVi Sports & Social brought the game show “Wipeout” to a new level. The Wipeout Run is a 5k course featuring obstacles inspired by the hit TV show. The race is held each year at the Del Mar Fairgrounds ($10 parking fee) with start times anywhere from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. For $65, you can have the “Wipeout” experience as seen on TV. VAVi started out as an adult recreation league for sports like kickball, flag football and beach volleyball and has since grown into a company with more than 90,000 active young professionals from all over San Diego who come play on and off the field each year. The organization brings together fun, like-minded individuals with the perfect hybrid of top-notch sports leagues and premier social events. VAVi also puts together large scale events such as the Heroes Brew Fest, Del Mar Mud Run and the Wipeout Run, which draws participants from San Diego County and beyond. The Wipeout Run event travels to 22 cities across the country, San Diego being one of those stops. The race includes 12 challenge obstacles: Dope on a Rope, Tumble Tubes, Monkey Business, Smash Wall, Foam of Fury, The Drop, Big Balls, Sky’s The Limit, Bubble Bash Swing, Sweeper, the infamous Wrecking Balls, and finally the four-story Happy Ending. Some of the obstacles were fairly hard to complete without taking a fall into the water. less than a 10 percent success rate. When I went through, one worker said that fewer than 10 people had made it through all day. Then there was the Wrecking Balls. In order to pass this obstacle, you had to run across a narrow bridge over a pool while two large wrecking balls swung back and forth. Move too quickly and you’ll lose your balance, move too slow and you’re sure to get taken out by the wrecking ball. At the end of the run, you get to make your way down the world’s largest inflatable water slide to your Happy Ending. Though you walk away from the Wipeout Run drenched, you leave knowing you had the “Wipeout” experience. Make sure you bring a towel and a

A Noble endeavor – Point Loma gardener adopts a plot in Balboa Park for the centennial celebration Peninsula gardener John Noble and his associates have adopted a garden in the heart of Balboa Park that was showcased in the recent May 9 “party of the century,” one of the major events of the park’s 2015 centennial celebration. “It has been the most wonderful experience of my life,” said Noble, who took part in support group Friends of Balboa Park’s Adopt-A-Plot program with the city’s Park & Recreation Department for the 2015 centennial. Professional landscape designers, horticulture and garden societies, businesses and volunteers have worked to create new landscapes for key areas of Balboa Park, including popular gardens in the Central Mesa, which are among the highlights of putting the best face on the park for its centennial. Noble and others among the Friends of Balboa Park group worked with city parks to get permission to “take over some of the park’s garden space that needed upgrading.” He said special permits were issued to

contractors willing to revitalize the park’s landscaping. The Peninsula gardener was overjoyed at the plot he got to enhance in the park, which is located at the lily pond in front of the botanical building, one of the park’s most scenic and visited spots. “I feel like I won the lottery,” said Noble, noting, “It’s a wonderful opportunity to make this beautiful garden right in the heart of Balboa Park.” Noble said he has a vision to start a program “to teach kids about plants, the botanical language and nature.” He added it’s important to educate young people early on about the significance of plants and the relationship of different species to one another. Noble has helped out with the Point Loma Native Plant Garden as well as aiding with median plantings, a continuing project of the Point Loma Association, along Nimitz Boulevard and other community thoroughfares. Noble added there’s something “magical” about working with plants. “There is just something beautiful about nature,” he noted, adding, “Most

He added it’s great exposure, pointing out that as many as 10,000 visitors a day have their pictures taken in Balboa’s picturesque gardens. “It’s been a very hard challenge to make it on that level,” said Noble of his garden, adding he’s had volunteers, including children, who’ve helped him with the monumental undertaking. The gardener said most of the storied park’s drought-tolerant gardens are “about reducing water, putting in perennials that need less water than the plants that are being taken out. The overall goal is for water education.” Noble started in November to get his Balboa Park garden plot ready for the May 9 Party of the Century, which was attended by the mayor and countless others. Noble noted the adopt-a-plot project isn’t just “a temporary, short-term thing for the centennial,” but instead is a “historical thing” meant to endure and reshape the park aesthetically, improving it for generations to come.
