There will be a changing of the guard at Point Loma Association's annual town hall forum and election from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 24 at the Portuguese Hall at 2818 Avenida de Portugal. Outgoing PLA presiClark Anthony dent Robert (Tripp) Jackson will be passing the gavel to Clark Anthony Burlingame (known professionally as Clark Anthony). This year's forum/election format is diverging from that of recent years. Instead of having the traditional three guest speakers, the town hall will have a panel discussion instead. The itinerary: • 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. – "Meet Your Neighbors.” Local organizations and businesses will be available to meet at their displays inside the hall.

Shades Oceanfront Bistro is out, and OB Surf Lodge is in. The popular Ocean Beach restaurant, co-owned and operated by David Martin and his sonin-law, Jeff Levitt, at 5083 Santa Monica Ave. for more than 13 years, has changed hands. The Martins and Levitts told their employees at the end of April that they had sold the restaurant, which will close after Labor Day. The buyers were three high-profile restaurateurs – Mina Desiderio, Hoffman Leung and Brendan Huffman – who intend to remodel the space and reopen as newlook OB Surf Lodge. “We wanted to be a community restaurant... the community embraced us and got us through the bad times and was always there for us… we're just tired out, the (November kitchen) fire was really devastating and very stress-

NEWS Former SeaWorld manager pleads guilty to wire fraud BY NEAL PUTNAM | THE BEACON

A former manager at SeaWorld pleaded guilty May 5 to wire fraud as he defrauded the company out of $818,000 by creating 100 invoices on his work computer for a phony merchandise company that claimed to sell products to the marine mammal park. Sebastian Jobin, 47, also pleaded guilty to filing a false tax return on which he never reported the illegal funds he received. On Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey Miller renewed his earlier order to detain Jobin without bail in the Metropolitan Correctional Center. Sentencing was set for Aug. 5. Jobin could receive a maximum sentence of 23 years in federal prison. Jobin billed SeaWorld from a sham business he created called SJ Merchandise. He claimed packages of merchandise such as “sea creature rings,” “purple shiny ornaments” and wildlife animal bookmarks were sold to SeaWorld, but no deliveries or packing slips could be found. The company’s address was listed as his own residence in Mission Hills, and he was suspended from SeaWorld on Jan. 22, 2015 when the firm discovered a link between him and SJ Merchandise. His name and

that of his former roommate were listed as co-owners with the California Secretary of State. Some of the invoices were billed for less than $10,000, a financial threshold that would have triggered scrutiny by SeaWorld management. “We are dedicated to protecting our local businesses, citizens and taxpayers from corruption,” said U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy in a statement. “Business insiders who abuse the trust of their employers and the community will be held accountable and brought to justice.” Court documents also show that Jobin defrauded the co-owner of SJ Merchandise through identity theft and used credit cards in his name. That man was left with debt of $177,000. Jobin was charged under his full legal name, Wilfred David Joseph Jobin-Reyes, but used the name of Sebastian Jobin in business and entertainment ventures. He was arrested in Dallas in March. “Mr. Jobin-Reyes abused his position as a manager at SeaWorld for his own selfish gain; when that was not enough, he went on to defraud the government by claiming false expenses and failing to report significant income on his tax return,” said Aimee Schabilion, acting special agent for IRS criminal investigation.

Fundraiser set for PLHS administrator battling cancer Point Loma High School vice principal Kevin Gormly is continuing to battle a brain tumor found in October after he experienced severe headaches. Now, a fundraiser is being planned at his wife's school, and a GoFundMe account has been set up to help his family. Despite Gormly’s several surgeries and setbacks, his family remains courageous in supporting the administrator, who is well liked by students and staff. A fundraiser walk is planned for Monday, May 23 at St. Augustine High School, 3266 Nutmeg St., where Gormly's wife works. Further radiation and two types of chemo followed. Soon, the incision site reopened, and he was given a three-week break before further chemo, during which he was able to enjoy himself and play outside with his children. Early this month, Gormly returned home under hospice care and is reported to be resting comfortably. The family's social media message says, "Kevin's prognosis is not good, and it has devastated our family. We ask that you keep Kevin and our family in your prayers. We know that God works miracles, and we believe that Kevin is a miracle himself." Gormly has worked at Point Loma High School for nearly two decades and has taken a strong interest in the school's rich history.

Ocean Beach Pier 50th Anniversary Art Show exhibit set for June BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON

Ocean Beach MainStreet Association received about 50 submissions by the May 6 deadline for the Ocean Beach Pier 50th Anniversary Art Show. “We will judge the art and make a (winning) selection, and all the artists will know who that is by May 20,” said Isabel Clark, the association's programs director. On July 2, Ocean Beach's iconic pier officially passes the half-century mark. On that date in 1966, 7,000 of San Diego's then 600,000 residents turned out to celebrate the pier's official opening. The pier's ribbon cutting was presided over by San Diego Mayor Frank Curran and Gov. Edmund (Pat) Brown, father of current California Gov. Jerry Brown. Clark said the beach community's Business Improvement District was pleased by the submissions, noting the art was “in a wide variety of media, everything from sculpture to photography to different styles of paintings – watercolors, oils, acrylics.” Submitted artwork will be exhibited at Teeter gallery/boutique, at 5032 Niagara Ave. in Ocean Beach, from June 30 to July 31. “Our job now is to figure out how we can fit as much as we can of what was submitted into the space we have,” Clark said, adding, “The exhibit should be really good, and

became a popular destination for locals and tourists, its original purpose was strictly for fishing. Local fishermen needed a way to prevent their lines and lures from getting tangled in the vast kelp and rock beds that lie near the surface of the water near the shores. The construction of the pier enabled anglers to fish in 25 to 30 feet of water, avoiding most of the shoreline kelp and enabling them to catch species of fish that live in deeper waters. The pier extends 1,971 feet into the ocean and is the second-longest pier on the West Coast. It is purported to be the longest concrete pier in the world. Its unique T-shape at the end adds 360 feet to the south and 193 feet to the north. Founded in 1978, the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association comprises area merchants and professionals dedicated to building a thriving business district that fulfills the needs of the neighboring community and visitors alike.

Point Loma football to play county powers BY SCOTT HOPKINS | THE BEACON

Several new opponents and membership in a new league will highlight the 2016 Point Loma High School football season. Based on their strong performance in recent seasons, the Pointers will move up to an Eastern League that will undoubtedly be one of the toughest in the CIF's San Diego Section, and there should be no shortage of rivalries in the new format. The 2016 Eastern League games will match the Pointers against perennial county powers Cathedral Catholic and St. Augustine, two private schools with more liberal allowances in filling their rosters. In fact, when the Pointers made three consecutive trips to Qualcomm Stadium as a CIF Div. III finalist, it was the Saints (46-14 in 2005), (17-7 in 2006) and Dons (41-3 in 2007) who defeated them. Then, in the Pointersâ€™ fourth stadium trip, it was the Dons who again drove a dagger through Pointer hearts with a 20-14 come-from-behind win in 2009. From the period between 1993 and 2014 when schools were grouped for playoff competition by enrollment, private schools won 14 Div. III titles, led by the Dons (eight times) and the Saints (two titles and five runners-up). Teams are now assigned to divisions based on their record over the past five seasons, a move local CIF administrators felt would help even the playing field for all schools. Following each year, division assignments are re-evaluated and changes made. Another rivalry continues in the new Eastern League with Pointer nemesis Madison also coming on board. The Warhawks have been dominant since joining the Western League for the 2010 season, winning the league title every year since except for 2011, when the Pointers battled them to a 13-13 tie in a memorable rainy-night donnybrook

New to the schedule this year is South Bay power Bonita Vista, who finished 12-3 (4-0 in the Metro Mesa League) enroute to a 52-14 destruction of Mission Bay for the CIF Div. III championship before defeating Canyon (Anaheim) and before losing to Hanford, Cal. 33-21 in a state bowl game. Also new is El Cajon's Christian High School, who finished 8-4 (4-0 to win the City League crown). Gone, for now, is the annual "Shoe Game" against La Jolla, one of the county's longest rivalries, which the Pointers have won with regularity in recent years.

Olympic medalists, Tour de France competitors and other pros will kick off the Amgen Tour of California race in Mission Bay’s Ski Beach at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, May 15. At least 16 teams of eight riders will begin the trek through 106 miles of San Diego’s diverse terrain with thousands of spectators vying for the ideal place to watch them start the race. This is North America’s largest cycling event. Stage 1 begins at Mission Bay and goes through Balboa Park, downtown, Imperial Beach and other San Diego neighborhoods before returning west on Garnet Avenue to finish in Mission Bay about 3:40 p.m. Last year, the tour was

broadcast in more than 200 countries as world-class riders cruised through the course. Here are some of the best spots to watch the cyclists spin by as they begin the weeklong 800-mile race.

“I walked a quarter mile in one hour and 15 minutes yesterday. A year and a half ago I could only walk 100 yards in that time,” said 23year-old Will Barton in March. When Point Loma High School alum Barton was shot three times (including once in the head) by a fugitive in 2012, no one expected him to survive. Doctors gave him less than a 1 percent chance to live at all. Today, Will’s cognitive and physical accomplishments have stumped medical professionals and inspired family members, friends and loved ones. After being injured, Barton remained in the hospital and assisted living facilities for months, where he relearned to eat, talk, sit up, stand up and walk. While he continues to rely on a wheelchair most of the

time and needs around-the-clock care, focusing on his accomplishments and abilities, and not on what he can’t yet do, is a vital strategy for him. “When Will walked that quarter mile down the pier, it was a recordbreaking day, and people were cheering for him all the way,” said his mom, Marie Najera-Lonsdale. “Recognizing these milestones and seeing the support from others energizes him to keep going.” For Barton, who is coming into his adulthood in the wake of a violent and life-changing injury, these milestones wouldn’t be possible without the support of the community. The annual cost of care for his equipment, caregivers, therapists, teachers and life coaches runs in the tens of thousands of dollars annually (over what insurance and government aid cover).

The Peninsula Beacon has shared Barton's story with a caring and generous community that has stepped up to make several previous fundraisers into big successes. Another opportunity to help Barton and his family is coming up. On Saturday, May 28, the Strong Will Golf Tournament will be held to raise funds for his annual cost of care. The seventh annual I Love Poke Festival is expected to bring about 800 people to Bali Hai Restaurant on May 24 to sample raw tuna and other Hawaiian delicacies. Bringing together about 30 chefs and restaurants for a tasting event and competition, this year’s I Love Poke Festival will feature the event’s first international poke chef. “This is an event to celebrate Hawaiian food and culture in one of the most beautiful island settings on the mainland—the Bali Hai,” said Nino Camilo, festival founder. The festival is divided into two areas: Pokeland and Foodland. Pokeland will feature 20 chefs competing for the festival title of best poke. Foodland will offer samples of Hawaiian, Asian and Island-inspired dishes from 12 restaurants. Participating restaurants include Guahan Grill, Hammond’s Gourmet Ice Cream, Hodad’s, Ho’onani Cakes, L&L Hawaiian Barbecue El Cajon, Ohana Cafe, Snoice SD, SuperNatural Sandwiches, Sweetbricks, Tajima Ramen, The Lanai Leucadia and Zarlitos Family Restaurant. A panel of judges, including three previous festival winners, will be there to score the poke chef competitors based on presentation, quality and flavor. “I love working with chefs who just want to have a good time, serve people poke and throw shakas [shaka brah signs] while listening to live reggae music,” Camilo said. “If the chefs are having a lot of fun, then you know the attendees are going to have fun as well.” Live music will be played by Camilo’s family from Oahu, a group called Leileiana, who will be performing Hawaiian and reggae music. Regarding poke’s recent surge in

popularity on the mainland, Camilo said he’s not surprised to see the emerging food trend. “It’s really hard to see some of the more diluted versions of poke out there,” Camilo said. “It’s all about aloha; and with aloha comes respect for the culture, the people and the ocean. If things are done just to make a dollar, the heart of what poke is will be lost, and tuna as a species will once again be at risk for overfishing.” In the past, Camilo has donated a portion of festival proceeds to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Instead, this year, he decided to sponsor Hawaiian families to attend the festival who are currently in town seeking medical treatment for their children at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego. “My family has hosted families from all over the Pacific [in town seeking medical treatment],” Camilo said. “My hope is to give these families at least one night off, where they can feel like they’re home again. I Love Poke was created because I wanted to help Hawaiian people satisfy their poke cravings while here in California.” The festival will be held from 6 to 9 p.m., and tickets are available for $75. The Bicycle Advisory Committee consistently recommends this type of infrastructure support to encourage people to go by bike. Songwriters Acoustic Nights moves to Ocean Beach BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON

Monthly music series Songwriters Acoustic Nights has moved from its longtime location, Swedenborg Hall in University Heights, to Ocean Beach’s Holy Trinity Anglican Church. The move was made due to the Hall’s closure in February. The events began in 2008 as a fundraiser for Swedenborg Hall, staged by promoter Mitch Feingold, who at the time specialized in comedy and corporate events. When Feingold saw the response from the crowd at the inaugural event, which featured Grammy-winning singersongwriter Jeff Silbar (“The Wind Beneath My Wings”) and Eagles songwriter Jack Tempchin (“Peaceful Easy Feeling”), he realized there was an audience for this sort of themed concert. “I knew I was into something great,” he said. “My background in producing comedy shows and entertainment for large events made it possible for me to produce Songwriters Acoustic Nights, from pacing to sound. We have had and continue to have some amazing talent in our shows.” Performers agree. “Mitch is great at setting up an environment that allows the audience to experience the full breadth of what each performer has to offer,” says acclaimed producer Jeff Berkley, who has taken the stage at the event several times. “It's fun to play, too!” The show is done in a Nashville Round style, with four singer-songwriters sitting together on-stage. Each one takes a turn to perform a song and tell a little bit about its genesis, in a round-robin setting. “I chose this format because I find it more entertaining,” Feingold said.

“Audience members tend to agree. It also gives performers a chance to interact with each other. Performers who have met for the first time may end up working with each other on future projects.” The concerts feature primarily solo artists but have included duets and singer-songwriters with their instrumental accompanist. On May 15, the show will feature Veronica May, Fast Heart Mart, Michelle Tobias and Sandra Bacall. When Swedenborg Hall closed its doors in February, the show’s change of venue was quickly worked out, and the possibility of losing momentum was very real. Moving an established event can often work to its detriment, but Feingold sees the recent relocation as nothing but positive. “The sound quality of this venue is even better than the previous venue,” Feingold remarked. “The move to OB has proven to be a good thing. OB is a hotbed of music talent, and it’s a great community that sup-

ports the arts.” Feingold is always on the hunt for artists to feature in the show. “I am looking for the most talented singer-songwriters I can find in Southern California,” Feingold said. “They come from three sources: word of mouth from people in the industry, singer-songwriters who contact me and performers I have seen onstage.” He notes that sound technician Andrew Nast has been a big help “not only in making the show work but in finding talent.” While staging these events is a time-consuming labor of love, Feingold is more than happy to put in the effort. “Producing these shows takes a lot of work,” he acknowledged. “But the age of the Internet helps, as does partnering with and having the support of a great venue, and a great sound tech makes all the difference.” In this day and age of short attention spans, Feingold is thrilled that his music showcase is still going strong. “I have met a lot of great people from this project, and I look forward to meeting more,” he noted. “San Diego has a lot of great music shows. Wojniak to headline Liberty Concert Series Concert to raise funds for nonprofit community Music4Change Music4Change, RMC’s division of community outreach. Music4Change transforms and enriches lives through music in nontraditional, underserved venues across San Diego County. At-risk youth in the San Diego County Juvenile Court system, homeless shelters and retirement homes are some of the many groups that benefit from this program. In 2015, RMC provided 884 hours of free services to schools, retirement homes and other underserved groups throughout San Diego and $55,000 in reduced-cost music lessons to students in need. The concert takes place on Saturday, May 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. at RMC in the heart of Arts District Liberty Station, 2590 Truxtun Road. RMC’s renovated performance space features a new stage. Tickets for this all-ages show are $10 per person and are available at libertyconcerts.evenbrite.com or at the door. Food, beverages and alcohol will be available with a suggested donation. All ticket sales and donations help continue keeping music education alive and accessible in San Diego. RMC is a nonprofit organization combining its background in all-ages music education with the success of its community outreach programs. Recreational Music Center (RMC), a nonprofit community music school located in Arts District Liberty Station, is raising money to benefit communities in need at the new monthly Liberty Concert Series. The first concert takes place on Saturday, May 14, with subsequent concerts scheduled on the second Saturday of every month. RMC welcomes local singer-songwriter Mike Wojniak, who will perform original songs that have been shaped by artists such as Coldplay, Radiohead and Bon Iver. His unique style and compositions have been inspired by his travels to Europe and Central America and across the United States. Reviewers have hailed him as a poet, a relevant and powerful voice and an amiable storyteller. “I’m excited to share my music at RMC while raising money for an organization that brings music to youths who otherwise may not have access to these resources. Music changes lives, and ensuring opportunities are available to all is an important mission,” said Wojniak. Other performers include local artists and RMC’s youth rock ensembles, part of RMC’s unique Live Band Experience program that teaches aspiring rock stars how to perform popular music in a band setting.
