Donations may be dropped off at the club 4 to 7 p.m. on March 19 and 20. “The club looks forward to all of OB's support,” said the Woman’s Club on its website at www.obwomansclub.org. “Proceeds will go towards various OB community projects, as well as to improvements to their building.” Founded in 1924, Ocean Beach Woman's Club is 91 years old this year. One of the oldest civic groups in the city of San Diego, the club has been instrumental in paving OB streets, installing sewers, securing street lights, acquiring an OB Rec Center and a public library, securing lifeguards year-round and planting trees, shrubs and flowers as well as having served as a recreation center for servicemen during World War II. Some of the latest projects OB Woman’s Club has been involved with include OBWC Community Gardens; established two college scholarships for two former foster students who’ve "aged out of the San Diego Foster Care System"; helped support the OB fireworks; held an open house for the OB Town Council holiday fundraiser; hosted OBMA's mixer for OB businesses plus OBMA’s Holiday Food and Toy Drive; held beach clean-ups as well as a 90th birthday party for OBWC during which all of OB was invited to help celebrate. Opening statements and testimony was expected to start this week in the trial of a father charged with hit and run in the death of his 4-year-old son, who was fatally injured in a 2013 accident near Rosecrans Street. Jury selection started March 11 in the trial of Angelo Arroyo Fabiani, 41, who is also charged with child endangerment in the death of Valentino Fabiani. He has pleaded not guilty in San Diego Superior Court. The accident occurred June 2, 2013, after his Nissan truck went down an embankment on Interstate 5 and Rosecrans Street and hit a palm tree. Witnesses said he frantically broke a window and was able to detach his 4-year-old son from the child safety seat, but the boy dropped

about eight feet to the pavement. No one saw him leave, according to witnesses in the preliminary hearing, but he wasn’t there when police and an ambulance showed up. Valentino Fabiani was declared brain dead in a hospital, and he died eight days later. A deputy medical examiner testified the boy’s injuries included a skull fracture and stemmed from both the accident and the fall. Fabiani was arrested days later. It was suspected that he fled because he had been drinking and wanted to avoid an alcohol/blood test. Fabiani was on probation for a misdemeanor DUI conviction from 2011 at the time. He faces seven years in prison if he’s convicted and remains free on $500,000 bond. -Neal Putnam

It states: "In order to accommodate the local residents, there will be an entrance and exit to Southernwood Way with a light at Catalina Boulevard, making the intersection usable by residents only. This will eliminate all traffic speeding north on Catalina Boulevard from ever turning west (right) onto Cañon Street and into Point Loma residential neighborhoods." In a letter to Second District Councilmember Lorie Zapf, Point Lomans who are signing the online petition call upon Zapf to “make the intersection of Catalina Boulevard and Cañon Street residential-only.” “On the day of the accident, Councilmember Zapf asked staff to begin studying that intersection and the surrounding area for any changes that the city could make to improve pedestrian safety,” said Alexandra Bell, communications director for Zapf. “She has made this intersection one of her top priorities,” Bell said. The traffic study will take into account factors like visibility, speed and the number of vehicle trips at different periods in the day. “We hope to have the results of that study soon and will review all potential options before moving forward,” Bell said. “We have also passed along the proposal made by the community to close that street, and have asked traffic engineers look into that as well.” The petition contends this intersection has plagued the nearby residential, family-oriented Point Loma neighborhood for years. It notes residents “have pleaded with the city and local authorities to remedy the situation, yet their concerns have remained unheard.” Also noted in the petition is 2014 census data showing 17 percent of Point Lomans are aged 18 and under and that 28 percent of the community’s households have children. Additionally, there are 453 children attending nearby Sunset View Elementary. If the petition drive is successful, supporters say the unused section of Cañon Street would be converted into green space, which could become a small memorial community park.

Point Loma Assembly plans contest to provide free space for nonprofit group The Point Loma Assembly, located in a historic building across from Cabrillo Elementary School at 3035 Talbot St., is dedicated to promoting civic, artistic, literary, social and philanthropic work on the Peninsula. According to board president Susan Hoekenga, in appreciation of community support the Assembly has received over the years, the organization is sponsoring a contest to identify an appropriate nonprofit group or organization looking for a location for one day in which to complete their project. “We are regularly approached by groups who want to use the building at no charge, and we can’t honor all these requests,” said house chairman Marty Smith, “even though we know there is a need for space in Point Loma.” “There are many groups in the area paying it forward with projects like tutoring kids, raising money for causes, putting on performances, and all kinds of wonderful things,” said Hoekenga. “Offering the building at no charge is our thank you to the community, and we look forward to providing space for a group that just needs a place to do that.” Interested organizations may contact Hoekenga at (619) 222-3500 or shoekenga@cox.net. This past summer, the site received upgrades. A new roof was put on, the front doors were painted, new signage noting the 100-year anniversary was added and new lighting was installed. Currently, the building is notable for another reason. A 12-foot-tall metal and glass sculpture, created for the Port District’s Urban Tree project, was installed in front of the Hall. Designed by Point Loma artist Garret Goodwin, the fanciful “tree” was erected to call attention to the Point Loma Assembly Art Show held last November. More than two-dozen juried artists participated, representing a variety of mediums including pottery, jewelry, paintings and glasswork. All artists donated a portion of their sales to the Assembly restoration fund, raising more than $3,000. The Assembly was formed by a group of 28 community-minded women in 1911. Man drowns in Mission Bay Stephen Sagiao was one of three people in a canoe in Mission Bay on Friday, March 13. The canoe, which was about 25 yards from the Ski beach boat ramp in Mission Bay Park, flipped over for an unknown reason, and the 54-year-old Sagiao was not wearing a life jacket, according to San Diego Police. Two of the people swam to safety, but Sagiao was unable to swim to safety, was

6 Getaway driver pleads guilty

The getaway driver in 11 robberies and attempted robberies, which started in Ocean Beach, has pleaded guilty to committing two hold-ups and faces up to six years in prison. A sentencing date for Benjamin Hernandez, 24, will be set on April 20 in San Diego Superior Court, said Deputy District Attorney Michael MacNeil on Tuesday. The remaining nine charges will be dismissed. Joseph Andres Garcia, 20, is charged with eight counts of robbery and three attempted robberies in the same series and will stand trial on April 20. Garcia has pleaded not guilty. Hernandez was arrested Feb. 3, 2014 by San Diego Police after a witness wrote down the license plate number of the BMW used as the get-

away car. It was traced to Hernandez’s home in National City. Garcia was arrested two days later. The victims, 10 men and one woman, testified last April in the preliminary hearing. The spree took place in one night, on Feb. 2, 2014. Most victims were robbed at gunpoint, many of whom were pedestrians. Some said guns were held to their heads. The first robbery happened about 6:50 p.m. in Ocean Beach, and other hold-ups occurred in Hillcrest, Golden Hill, Mission Beach, and the Midtown area. Two students were held up at UCSD in La Jolla. The wallets and cell phones were taken from each victim. Both remain in jail on $500,000 bail each. -Neal Putnam

Hearing postponed for teens accused of crime spree A preliminary hearing was postponed to March 19 for two teenagers accused of holding up pedestrians in a crime spree that ended in a police pursuit and crash. Victor Ledesma, 18, and 17-yearold Jonah Ledesma – who are not related – are each facing six counts of robbery, two counts of attempted robbery, felony evading and auto theft in connection with several crimes that occurred within hours of each other in January. Two 15-year-olds were also arrested in connection with the crime

spree and are being prosecuted in Juvenile Court, said Deputy District Attorney Jim Koerber. Authorities allege that the crime spree began shortly after 12:30 a.m. Jan. 23 at First and Pennsylvania avenues. San Diego police said four robbers pulled guns and knives on pedestrians in Hillcrest, University Heights, North Park and La Jolla. Officers caught up with the quartet in Mission Beach around 2:15 a.m. and a pursuit ensued. The chase ended in the Point Loma area.

The State Water Resources Control Board has extended and expanded restrictions on water use with California entering its fourth year of drought as winter ends without significant storms or snowfall to replenish dwindling reservoirs. So far this winter, wildfires are burning through nearly four times as many acres as usual. The state firefighting agency reports that the dry conditions are forcing it to maintain its highest level of seasonal firefighters straight through the winter. The state water board, meanwhile, is pursuing ways to cut down urban water use. It voted to extend statewide outdoor water limits imposed in July, barring washing down driveways, decorative

SANDAG plans to expand Regional Bike Network As part of a $200 million initiative to expand bike infrastructure and make riding a bike a transportation choice for everyday trips, SANDAG is launching GO by BIKE, a public outreach and marketing program aimed at expanding awareness, appreciation and acceptance of biking as a practical and reasonable choice for getting around and to encourage people to use Regional Bike Network projects as the means to travel throughout San Diego. The project will improve an important connection between points to the north, such as Sorrento Valley, University City, and UCSD, and points to the south, such as Mission Bay, Pacific Beach, Mission Valley, and downtown San Diego. Corbett said Orwig never resisted lending a helping hand to the homeless, even going so far as to allow them to use his P.O. box and deliver their mail to them or house them temporarily if they required it. “Nobody would even know about that. He (Orwig) was very humble and non-assuming,” Corbett said, offering an anecdote about her brother. “One time he put together a (homeless) team, the Cart-els, for a baseball division that just played for fun,” Corbett said. “That was the kind of person he was.” Corbett said her family practically grew up at Robb Field. “My family has been using Robb Field for more than 55 years,” she said. “My dad coached and umpired there. My dad and brother both coached me. I coached my niece. She went on to play in college. My mom and dad even played on co-ed teams. It’s been totally a family affair there for us for a very long time.” Corbett said renaming one of Robb Park’s eight fields for Orwig, only the second field there to be so dedicated, is “quite an honor and an amazing memorial for my brother.” Corbett said having a field named for her brother is entirely appropriate given that that is something that can never be severed. “It was a big social thing for him,” she said. “He was very competitive. He loved the game. He just loved being down there and playing, because he thought it was just a big family down there.” Gary was born on March 4, 1948 in Warren, Ohio, to Lloyd and Ina Orwig. In 1959, when Gary was about 11, the Orwigs moved to San Diego and settled in Point Loma. He went to Ocean Beach

Gary’s love for the game was not just about the crack of the bat, the long fly ball or the close play at home plate. It was about the people he played with and the fans that came out to watch. His mom and dad were always on the sidelines, and his sisters, sisters-in-law and brothers-in law played on his co-ed softball teams for several years. Every Sunday was a family GARY ORWIG reunion, full of great fun and laughter. Over the years, Gary built an extended family from the managers and team members in the league.

Elementary, Collier Junior High School and Point Loma High School, where he lettered in track and baseball. He graduated in 1966 and was scouted by a couple different professional baseball teams. He served in Korea and was assigned as a dog trainer until he was honorably discharged in 1973. Gary and his wife Margie were married in 1978, but not before Margie had to pass the fishing, volleyball, softball and beer test. Almost immediately, two institutions sprung out of their partnership: The San Diego Coed Softball League headquartered at Robb Field, which they took over and ran for 35 years, and CDM Trophy, which Gary successfully ran out of his garage for 30 years. In addition to providing beautiful

keepsakes for countless young athletes, Gary provided a job at one point or another for almost everyone in his family and beyond. Gary loved the outdoors – camping, whitewater rafting – but he had a passion for fishing, whether it was lake fishing locally, or deep-sea fishing locally or off the coast of Ensenada. The March 15 field dedication in Orwig’s honor included memorials from family members and prayers and a blessing of the dedicated field by a pastor. Orwig’s widow Margie threw out the first pitch on the field. Afterwards, everyone repaired to the grassy part of the park for a barbecue and refreshments. “The game of baseball and softball was Gary’s life,” Corbett said at the

memorial. “Robb Field was his playground. Renaming field 8 to ‘Gary Orwig Field’ will ensure that as much as it was a part of his past, it will also be a part of his future.”

Many of Gary’s lifelong friendships started out at Robb Field. Gary also befriended the homeless population that congregated at the fields on Sundays to watch the games. He knew them by name and helped them whenever he could, bringing food for both them and their dogs, helping them get their Social Security checks and even forming a team for them to play on to give them a chance to be a part of the community in a positive way. The game of baseball and softball was Gary’s life. Robb Field was his playground. Renaming “Field 8” to “Gary Orwig Field” will ensure that as much as it was a part of his past, it will also be a part of his future. He would be so humbled to know that his dedication to the game, and the spirit of love he had for it, would be memorialized for years to come. Being a man of a few words, it is clear what Gary’s response to this honor would be… “Play ball!”

San Diego schools propose start date before Labor Day BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON San Diego Unified School District is seeking public input on a proposed change, which would take effect in the 2016-17 school year, to switch the first day of school from the Tuesday after Labor Day to the last week in August. Pointing out that for 30-plus years SDUSD has had a calendar committee responsible for putting together instructional calendars, SDUSD director of communications Linda Zintz said, “San Diego Unified is one of the last remaining school districts to start after Labor Day. Out of 42 districts in the county, only three or four of us continue to start the day after Labor Day.” The proposed start date for the calendar change is Aug. 29, 2016 for all schools, with an end date of June 14, 2017 for traditional calendar schools and an end date of July 21, 2017 for year-round schools. But before making any adjustments to its calendar, SDUSD acknowledges the importance of informing all the stakeholders why the district is considering the move, which it believes will benefit students. The district Calendar Committee identified several benefits of moving the start of school to August, including: • Aligns the district calendar with the majority of school districts across San Diego County. • Maximizes instruction time for students prior to the administration of stan-

dardized tests, which are given in the spring. • Aligns the district calendar more closely with the San Diego Community College District and other university academic calendars, which expands opportunities for high school students to participate in early summer special enrichment programs or pre-collegiate classes. • Students who participate in fall sports, football, field hockey, water polo, and cross country, begin training in August to be competitive with the other districts that start school in August. In essence, their summer break is already over. • Provides students looking for summer employment/internships equal access to these opportunities as students in other districts. • Not being tied to the definitive start date of the day after Labor Day provides flexibility for the end of the school year so it does not end on a Monday. Zintz noted the proposed 2016-17 calendar change was first proposed in December 2014, but she added the district board “felt like we weren’t giving families (proper) notice to make the change in 2015-16, so that was changed to 2016-17.” Zintz said her initial impression was that district stakeholders were about evenly split on the pros versus the cons of starting the school year earlier rather than later. She added there is an online forum on a district website where par-

ents and others can “give their input saying, ‘Yes, we support the Aug. 29 start date,’ or ‘No, we to want stay with the day after Labor Day time.’ ” “I know there are some vocal parents out there,” said Zintz about the ramifications of the proposed school calendar change. Zintz said SDUSD has set aside March for outreach and comment, noting once feedback has been compiled that information will be presented to the district’s governing board for further consideration, likely in April. Zintz noted the propose calendar change will not only affect students and their parents but also will impact the district’s 14,000 employees at all of its school sites. She added that whether or not it’s “the best thing for kids” will likely ultimately determine whether the calendar change is made - or not. Founded in 1954, SDUSD represents more than 200 institutions with more than 15,000 employees. The district includes 113 elementary schools, 24 middle schools, four atypical schools, 10 alternative schools, 27 high schools and 25 charter schools. The district is governed by a five-member elected Board of Education. Board members are elected by district for fouryear terms. The SDUSD calendar change survey is available at www.sandi.net/. The Lady Pointers soccer team completed an outstanding season with a tense, gutsy and physical 1-0 victory over Valhalla in the CIF Div. II championship game March 7 at Madison High School. The victory had added sweetness since Valhalla was the No. 1 seed with the Pointers receiving the No. 2 nod. Before each match, the Lady Pointers recite a chant that includes the phrase "We can't be beat," and that proved almost always to be the case as they soared to a 21-2-3 overall record and 80 mark to dominate the City League. The title win marked the team's 14th consecutive victory. The girls soccer team follows the girls basketball team (Div. IV) and girls volleyball team (Div. I) as the third girls team to bring home a CIF championship in the last 12 months. In the 70th minute of the match, hard-charging junior striker Jordan Patane was fouled in the penalty box by a Valhalla defender, which led to a penalty kick. Senior team co-captain Taylor Hopkins was selected to take the resulting penalty shot. Hopkins approached the ball and drilled a blast into the left side of the net, past the outstretched arms of the Valhalla goalkeeper for the only score of the game. The Pointer bench and fans erupted in cheers as the pressure immediately fell on the Norsemen, who furiously fought to tie the game before the referee's whistle signaled the end of the match. "I always go left (with my shot)," Hopkins said, amid a raucous on-field celebration by hundreds of Pointer students, parents and fans who came to support the team. "The goaltender looked at me and I think she knew I was going to switch sides and go right, so I went left. My heart almost exploded in my chest but everything worked out all right."

The teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half, with the Norsemen generating more offense that was repeatedly thwarted by the Pointers' strong defense. Halftime adjustments made by the Pointer staff led to greater offensive pressure in the second half, and it was during such a Pointer attack that Patane was taken down, leading to the gamewinning shot. "I thought we showed a lot of composure and poise for a younger team," an elated head coach John Murphy said. "We tactically did what we needed to do, and we've been a second-half team all year." Lady Pointers co-captain Cassidy Campe, a senior who turned in an outstanding effort on defense, and highscoring junior striker Riley O'Toole both had to sit out part of the second half after receiving yellow cards as contact

noticeably increased. Both returned after the mandated sideline time. Shortly before Hopkins' laser, the Pointers nearly netted a goal on a 66th minute free kick that landed at the feet of freshman defender Abigail Bates. She sent a strong shot on goal, but Valhalla's goalkeeper scooped it up.

Pointers baseball looks strong early this season After a bumpy start, the Point Loma High baseball team has put together a three-game winning streak during current pre-season tournament play. While Pointer batters are hitting a meager .206, solid pitching has carried the team to a 3-1 record in the Bill Whittaker Classic event involving teams from throughout San Diego County.

Victories have been credited to junior Cole van den Helder, and seniors Clay Palmer and Jayson Pappas. Opponents are batting only .091, .130 and .182 respectively against the trio, who have yet to give up an earned run. Palmer, the only southpaw in the group, has also proved extremely accurate on the mound, issuing only one

The future looks bright for these Lady Pointers, as the team returns all but four seniors. Their championship roster includes four freshmen, nine sophomores and four juniors. Murphy, who was surrounded by some of his celebrating players while others sneaked up from behind and dumped a huge container of ice on him, is well aware of his roster's future. "From the start of the year we've shown a lot of improvement," said Murphy. "These kids are very coachable and I think there's a lot more to come. We had 13 underclass kids out there, it was a nice blend, and they meshed really well with the four seniors (Hopkins, Campe, Audrey Herrin-Warner and Zoe Bodie) who have tremendous leadership skills. “We are so fit, the kids train all year, and they love those Point Loma hills!" Murphy said with a grin.

Fifteen-year-old Lukas Hanc recently returned from the United States Futnet Competition in Chicago, where he received a silver medal. Futnet, or soccer tennis as it is also known, is popular around the world, especially in Europe, as it was developed in Czechoslovakia in the 1920s. Hanc also represented USA in the World Championship in the Czech Republic in November 2014 where his team placed ninth among 18 teams. “I have great passion for this unique sport that requires the skills of soccer, gymnastics, karate and tennis,” said Hanc, a Point Loma High School sophomore. Hanc, whose parents are natives of the Czech Republic, learned the game from playing with his father and his friends on the weekends. “At the tournament, I was very nervous playing against athletes I had looked up to my entire life,” Hanc said. Hanc was the youngest player on any of the 11 teams competing, the average age being 28. “It was great playing for a stadium filled with fans, but probably the most emotional moment of the tournament was to stand in front of the United States flag at the ceremony and realize that I was representing my country,” Hanc said.

Band films music video at Sunset Cliffs and Cabrillo Point About two months ago, local photographer John Cocozza met the San Diego band KI at a full moon bonfire in Mission Beach and was immediately impressed. Cocozza was even more amazed when he heard their song "By The Sea." “When I initially heard the song, it brought to me visions of the fun activities we do here in San Diego and specifically the La Jolla to Sunset Cliffs area, no matter what the age of residents,” Cocozza said. “We are a community of people who love surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, swimming in the ocean and hanging with friends at the beach.” That led to an idea for a music video that would capture San Diego’s coastal

Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, and La Jolla. The band was 100 percent on board. “I had the privilege of working with a great professional cinematographer (and editor), Jon Killz, as well as a fantastic cast and crew (of a lot of locals),” said Cocozza, who directed the video. “I hope the music video captures the WATCH VIDEO AT SDNEWS.COM essence of why we live in San Diego.” The video was directed by local photograThe crew, which also included drone pher John Cocozza and shot and edited by cameramen Will Collins and Lenny Jon Killz, with a cast and crew of locals. At the NTC Arts & Culture District in Liberty Station, the former Naval Training Center, sailors once trained for military service. Now, a new generation of “recruits” gets its training in art, music and dance. America's Schooner Cup gears up for annual race The America's Schooner Cup Charity Regatta, established in 1988, is an annual event that takes place March 28 in San Diego Bay to benefit the NavyMarine Corps Relief Society, a civilian organization that provides support to active duty and retired Navy, Marines and their families in time of need. One of the best places to view the event, which starts about 11:30 a.m., is from Shelter Island. An informal Schooner Cup Ball will take place at the Silver Gate Yacht Club, located at 2091 Shelter Island Drive, on the evening of Friday, March 27. A dozen or more boats will come from as far north as Puget Sound. The event is hosted by Silver Gate Yacht Club and supported by Ensign International Yacht Brokerage. The coveted Schooner Cup is awarded to the first to finish on corrected time regardless of boat length. This is the West Coast's premier gathering of these historical schooners of all sizes. This year, people may be purchase tickets to be a passenger on the schooners Californian or Bill of Rights as they race down the Bay. Sunset Cliffs offers more than just ocean vistas Hillside Improvement Project to improve trails and native plant species Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, a 68-acre resource-based park stretching one and a half miles along the Pacific Ocean shoreline on the western edge of Point Loma, is one of San Diego County’s wondrous sites and perhaps San Diego’s bestkept secret. On the ocean side of Point Loma, the 18 acre linear park follows Sunset Cliffs Boulevard from Adair Street along the coastal bluffs past such landmarks as Cormorant Rock to Ladera Street. Along the way, there are several parking areas that allow for breathtaking ocean views, carved coastal bluffs, arches and sea caves. Flocks of pelicans soar along the bluffs and California gray whales can often be seen during their annual migration to Baja California. The spectacular sunset views give the area its name. But, the park is more than just grand vistas. Enter the main hillside park at the Ladera Street parking lot. This 50-acre section is a designated multiple-species conservation area. Just south of the lot, there is a two-acre native plant garden

Natural Park Council, leads the native plant garden project. Kimball organizes and supervises volunteers, including students from Point Loma Nazarene University, who assist in the planting and maintenance of the native garden. Native habitat restoration is about to get a major boost as contracted work will soon begin on the Hillside Improvement Project, a California Conservancy grant project with matching funds from the city and a private donor. Statement:“City currently receives about $2.5 million in rent annually from the Chargers,” according to a city document provided to Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s Chargers stadium task force. Determination: Misleading. Analysis: In theory, the Chargers have to pay the city of San Diego rent each year to play at Qualcomm Stadium. In reality, it’s the city that pays the Chargers. Over the past seven years, the city has paid the Chargers a total of $3.3 million despite a lease agreement that requires the team to pay the city. There are two reasons for this. The Chargers’ annual payment due to the city gets eaten away by a series of rent credits, which drastically reduces the team’s bill. Then the city pays the team each year as part of a settlement to a 2006 Americans with Disabilities Act lawsuit at Qualcomm. The result is that the city has owed the team money – an average of about $500,000 a year – after every season since 2007. Let’s break down how this all works: The team’s lease calls for an annual rent payment of $3 million plus more for home playoff games. (It was $2.5 million up until last year, which explains the statement in the city document given to the stadium task force.) But that number drops quickly when you factor in other details. The Chargers get to count lots of things toward their rent. The team’s property taxes, some parking revenues and the city’s suite at Qualcomm all decrease the rent payment. Most significantly, the team gets to count a percentage of all the beer, popcorn and other concessions sold at games toward its rent. “They pretty much get all revenues during home games with small exceptions,” said Tracy McCraner, the city’s financial management director. All these rent credits cut what the team owes to the city from $3 million to typically under $1 million every season. When you throw in the ADA settlement, which has averaged about $1.3 million a year, the city comes out as the net loser. The city did turn a $20,000 profit in 2006, and the 2014 numbers aren’t available yet. The claim that the Chargers pay the city $2.5 million each year in rent is misleading. Yes, there’s a rent payment in the team’s lease with the city. But when you factor in the team’s rent credits and the ADA settlement, the city owes the team money every year. ROCK AND ROLL SAN DIEGO Over the past decade San Diego has become a major hub of the music industry. Numerous music instrument manufacturers such as Carvin and Taylor are here, as are headquarters for such global-reaching industry leaders as NAMM and video archivists Reelin’ In The Years. Topped by a vibrant community of local artists, it’s only natural that a major music center emerge in the area and in this case it’s located right in our own backyard: Rock and Roll San Diego. Founded in 2011 by guitarist Mark Langford, since the first of the year, the combination music school, rehearsal room, repair shop and studios has gone through major upgrades, particularly in their three recording rooms, but also reaching in to their teaching talent, which already includes the likes of John Avila of Oingo Boingo and former Elvin Bishop Band guitarist Johnny Vernazza. Artists now have a choice of recording in a small room, big room or Hendrix Hall, a state-of-the-art studio that can also do time as a live venue. It comes

fully equipped with PA, lights, top-ofthe-line modern and vintage gear, a first class lounge and a complete kitchen. “We’ve spent thousands on microphones and all manner of things to get the studios just right,” Langford said. “Ace Frehley of KISS was in couple months ago for over a week and said it was the best rehearsal place in San Diego. That guy is a true rock god, so coming from him it made us smile thinking that he enjoyed it.” Other major artists that have spent time at the facility include the B-52s, P.O.D., Pierce the Veil, Carcass, A Day to Remember, Cattle Decapitation and Sheldon Reynolds of Earth Wind & Fire. A new and unique aspect to Rock and Roll San Diego’s rehearsal rooms is that each is now set up to record a basic 2-

track digital live session that is emailed to the band after their rehearsal. “It’s only a few bucks extra, so it’s a good way for the band to see how their practice went,” Langford stated. Another coup for Rock and Roll San Diego is the addition of three repair technicians formerly employed by the recently shuttered, legendary music store Guitar Trader: Luthier Matt Witte, teacher Mike Ruggirello and multi-tasker Jeff Merideth. “I really liked Guitar Trader and have been friends with everyone there for many years,” Langford said. “When they closed, I realized they needed a new home, so we talked. They liked what we are doing and have to offer them. They’ll be doing sales, lessons, recording and repairs.” For Langford, it’s important that Rock and Roll San Diego cover as many of a musician’s needs as possible. “It makes sense to have a one-stop resource for musicians, they can come in for a lesson or rehearsal and during that time they can get their gear fixed and buy strings so when they’re done the repair is ready, and how convenient is that?” Langford said.

Six plays in 24 hours? No problem for Point Loma Playhouse BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON Point Loma Playhouse is pushing the envelope with 24 Experiment, wherein 24 actors and writers and a dozen directors collaborate to produce six plays in 24 hours to be performed before a live audience. Producer Shelley Benoit discussed the process involved for the 24 Experiment event, which will be held Friday and Saturday, April 17 and 18. “At our kick-off meeting,” she said, “writers are given a genre — mystery, comedy, romance, anything — and they have to come up with a script that night. Then the directors show up and start casting actors, giving them their scripts about 9 a.m. The rehearsals start for the curtain (call) at 7 p.m., just 24 hours after the kick-off.” Benoit said the unorthodox theater exercise’s purpose is to “give local artists, whether they’re writers, directors or actors, an opportunity to come together with other people of similar interests and practice what it is they’ve learned how to do and what they want to do better.” Despite the funky and challenging timeline involved, the Playhouse producer said 24 Experiment is “lots of fun.”

“Even though this is a 24-hour thing and really rough, with actors who may — or may not — remember their lines, we usually get full audiences,” Benoit said. Those who’ve participated directly in the 24 Experiment say it can’t be beat. "I find that working within the 24hour time limit to write a play is an adventure in itself because you never know where your creative mind will take you during the night after lots of coffee, sugar and silly prompts,” said Jennifer Eve, who participated as a writer last year. “The next night, as you watch the actors read your lines, waiting for the audience to respond to your play is exhilarating, especially when they laugh when you hoped they would." "It's like mad libs for adults: absolutely fun and hilarious,” said Shalinda Wilkins, a two-time participant, a writer and associate producer in 2014. ”You don't need any experience or skills to write a play — just come and play with words or characters.” “The 24 Experiment is a paradox,” said Samantha Goldstein, who’s participated twice, once as a director and once as an actor. “You're tired, but you're on

a nonstop adrenaline high.” “There is something so magical about seeing a play take shape and be performed in 24 hours; it's very inspiring,” added Goldstein, noting, ”It's also really fun working and creating with strangers who quickly become friends. I can't wait to do it again.”

Over the last three years, producer Benoit noted the “quality of the plays has improved” with 24 Experiment, pointing out those participating are now “a seasoned group of quality players who’ve improved.” Point Loma Playhouse is a nonprofit run by an all-volunteer board. The play-

‘Freedom Train’ at Westminster Theatre Vanguard will present “Freedom Train” by Marvin Gordon at Westminster Theatre, 3598 Talbot St., Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March20 to 22 and 27 to 29. “Freedom Train” tells the story of Harriet Tubman, the Moses of her people, in a fascinating series of highly theatrical scenes that use dance, dialogue, and music of the period. Songs include "Follow the Drinking Gourd," "Steal Away," "Wade in the Water," "Good News, the Chariot's Acomin'," and many others. Tubman was born a slave, but when she was 25 she made her perilous escape from a Maryland plantation, leaving her family behind. Pursued by dogs and relentless slave catchers, she followed an escape route laid out by Quakers – secret hiding places in churches, barns, cellars and homes. The escape route that Harriet followed soon became known as the Underground Railroad, and she quickly became one of its most celebrated “conductors.” “Freedom Train” is presented by special arrangement with MTI, New York. Pointers Spring Arts & Craft Faire at PLHS on March 28 Local crafters and artists are being sought for the third annual Pointers Spring Arts & Craft Faire. The event takes place on the campus of Point Loma High School March 28 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The festival raises much-needed funds for Protect Our Pointers (POP), a crucial program that provides certified athletic trainers at all Pointer athletic events. Trainers are necessary both in the prevention and treatment of injuries and POP is operated under the auspices of the PLHS Pointer Association. Applications for vendors are available from Eleanor Snyder at protectourpointers@gmail.com. The cost of $50 gives vendors a 10 by 10 foot space to display their wares. All items sold will be handcrafted and include such items as soaps, wooden items, jewelry, art objects, ceramics and accessories for women and children. Also, a handful of vendors will be offering PLHS-related items.
