gusted by the thought of someone harming the parrots.” SoCal Parrot has been contacted about three birds being shot with a pellet gun in the past couple weeks. Two parrots were found at Talbot Street and Gage Drive. One was already dead. The other was taken to a rescue center in East County, where it later died. A third parrot was found dead near the Mariners Cove Apartments on Point Loma. An X-ray revealed a small pellet in its body. Parrots are not native to Southern California. But their exact origin is a matter of debate. Some have speculated that the wild local parrot population was at least contributed to by birds that escaped from the San Diego Zoo during its

early days. According to The California Parrot Project, the birds survive on seeds, fruit and nectar from tropical trees and shrubs planted in urban and residential areas in communities like Ocean Beach, Point Loma, Pacific Beach and La Jolla. The Parrot Project maintains that hundreds of released and escaped parrots throughout the state over time have led to the wild breeding populations today. Karen Straus, coordinator of the annual San Diego Bird Festival hosted by the San Diego Audubon Society, said parrots do not migrate but stay in San Diego year-round. They have established communal roosts around the county that they return to each night.

Following heavy El Niño rains in January and recent pounding surf, yet another portion of Sunset Cliffs yielded to nature last week, sending tons of sandstone and debris hurtling to the beach below. No injuries were reported after a portion of the famed bluffs at 1303 Sunset Cliffs Blvd. gave way about 5 p.m. Feb. 24, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. The collapsed portion, termed "large" by Fire-Rescue spokesman Lee Swanson, was in an area of the popular cliffs inspected just over a month ago by a municipal geologist after cracks were observed in the ground at the bluff's top. The area, which includes the first public parking lot south of Point Loma Avenue, was ordered closed based on these findings. Since that time, a city-installed fence has kept nightly hordes of sunset-watchers, recreational walkers and others back while several permanent signs installed years ago warning of "Unstable Cliffs" now stand alone far behind the chain link barriers. City lifeguards and police officers surveyed this most recent incident before deeming current fencing and signage sufficient to protect the public. Pat Abbott, SDSU professor emeritus of geology and geophysics, suggested persons walking along the top of any local cliffs stay well back from the edges and that those on the beaches below walk as close to the water as possible to provide extra space in case part of the bluffs were to fall.

125TH LIGHTHOUSE ANNIVERSARY

Light keeper’s daughters come home to Point Loma BY KAREN SCANLON | THE BEACON

Light keeper James Dudley’s daughters are coming home to Point Loma to participate in the 125th anniversary festivities at Cabrillo National Monument on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 22 and 23. The public is invited to come and revel in lively accounts of their years at the lighthouse.

History notes By virtue of its location at the southwesternmost point of the continental United States, the peninsula of Point Loma was the chosen site for one of the first eight lighthouses on the West Coast. But, alas, the original, 1855 Cape Cod structure had a short career as an aid to navigation, just shy of 36 years. Fog and low clouds too often obscured its light. San Diego was eager to become an important shipping port, but a reliable lighthouse, or two, was required. Point Loma Light Station was then re-established at a lower elevation with a new lighthouse and two keepers’ quarters. A harbor light on Ballast Point was to go into tandem operation but was lighted a few months ahead of the other. There had been complication with the size of the lens fitting into the lantern, which delayed sending a beacon from the lower lighthouse. Finally, on March 22, 1891, Captain Robert Israel lighted the wicks in the old lighthouse one last time. The following night, on his 68th birthday, he lighted the lamp in the new lighthouse. Over the years, numerous keepers were assigned to Point Loma Light Station. In 1930, James Elliot Dudley arrived as assistant keeper. Dudley had served aboard an East Coast lightship before journeying on an Indian motorcycle from homestate Connecticut to California in 1922. He secured jobs aboard two lighthouse tenders and three light stations prior to Point Loma. Dudley chanced to meet pretty Violet Warner, a visitor to the lighthouse, adn offered her a look at the prized chickens he was raising. The two courted and were married a few months later, in October of 1930.

Festivities at Cabrillo to celebrate 125th anniversary of old and new lighthouses Cabrillo National Monument is about to embark upon commemoration festivities recognizing the 125th anniversary of the change of operation at San Diego’s lighthouses. Open Tower Day is set for Tuesday, March 22 at Old Point Loma Lighthouse. Everyone is welcome to climb

to the lantern, or the top of the lighthouse, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The line can get long, but it's worth the wait. Please wear sun protection. The lighthouse park is open March 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Among the celebrated guests will be descendants of several former San

Diego light keepers. These include the last living adult children who actually lived at the lower, and still active, light station. Join the event throughout the day to hear stories and see pictures from family photo albums and a special presentation in the auditorium at 11:30 a.m.

encouraging children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school; to make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation alternative, thereby encouraging a healthful and active lifestyle from an early age; and to facilitate the planning, development and implementation of projects and activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption and air pollution in the vicinity of schools. Safe Routes to School funds may be used for the planning, design and construction of projects that will substantially improve the ability of students to walk and bicycle to school, including sidewalks improvement, traffic calming, speed reduction improvements, street crossings, on-street bicycle facilities, off-street bicycle and pedestrian facilities, secure bicycle parking and traffic diversion improvements in the vicinity of schools. “This is a race against the clock, in a way,” said Don Sevrens, another planning board member who's been working on the Wabaska project. “Once the city starts resurfacing part of Wabaska, some steps become less likely or certainly more expensive.”

Baby seal, pier jumper rescued in Ocean Beach A baby sea lion that couldn’t handle the heavy surf that pounded the San Diego coastline Feb. 25 had to be rescued by SeaWorld workers. The baby sea lion got stranded just south of the steps to the Ocean Beach Pier. He was too weak to battle the

waves, and SeaWorld workers rescued him sometime after 11 a.m. The pier was closed the morning of Feb. 25 due to a National Weather Service high surf advisory, but that didn't stop one would-be swimmer. Sometime before 11 a.m., a man

jumped the fence, ran down the end of the pier and jumped in the water. A lifeguard jumped off the pier to rescued the man, and a rescue boat came out to save him. The man was cited by police but not arrested.

Lifeguards union chief, ex-councilman Ed Harris to run for SD mayor

Point Loma has a new sign gracing the entryway into the community from San Diego International Airport. “Weathered by years of irrigation overreach and ever-prevalent termites, the Point Loma sign on North Harbor Drive was declared to be in critical condition last year by then-Rotary president Leon Scales,” said Cecilia Carrick of the Point Loma Association. “Quarts of BONDO and several layers of paint applied by our skilled Rotarian friends were barely holding the sign together until design and funds were arranged by the (association) for a new purchase. “That's when a very generous Point Loma private donor and the County of San Diego stepped in to help out. The work, commissioned to Integrated Sign Associates, produced a vibrantly colorful replacement that is now in place.” Nonprofit Point Loma Rotary Club provides support for community projects in Point Loma, the greater San Diego area and the world. Created in 1961, the Point Loma Association comprises residents and businesses committed to improving the quality of life in Point Loma through beautification, education, charitable activities and

Ed Harris, the head of the city's lifeguards union and a former interim City Council member, tossed his hat into the San Diego mayoral ring March 2, according to the City Clerk's Office. Harris represented Council District 2 for most of 2014 after the seat was vacated by Kevin Faulconer when he became mayor and until Councilwoman Lorie Zapf was elected in her new district. He's been Ed Harris a longtime advocate for improving health benefits for lifeguards, who often have to work in contaminated water, and recently directed the attention of city officials to a looming staffing crisis -- in which many experienced lifeguards are due to retire in the next couple of years. Faulconer is running for re-election and is also being challenged by former state legislator Lori Saldana. Gita Appelbaum, Marty Gardner, Steven Greenwald, Bilal Homran, Sina Simon Moghadam, Gregory Morales and Lawrence Zynda have also taken out nominating papers to signify their intent to run for mayor. The papers have to be returned to the City Clerk's Office by March 10.

All winter sports teams at Point Loma High School earned playoff spots. Boys basketball entered Div. III as the No. 10 seed, where they defeated No. 7 Rancho Buena Vista 43-40 before traveling to Central (El Centro), where they were eliminated by a score of 64-49. Head coach Chris Brisco's team finished with an overall record of 12-15 (5-7 for fifth place in the

Central League). Partial statistics show sophomore Nashom Carter led the team in scoring at 14.8 points per game. Junior Darnell Johnson, at 11.2, was next. Girls basketball also entered Div. III as a No. 10 seed but was eliminated in its first game against No. 7 Valley Center by a 38-28 score. Head coach Dave Aros' Lady Pointers finished the season with an overall record of 10-12 (8-3, second place in Central League).

The Lady Pointers soccer team had been successful in its attempt to repeat as CIF champions until they played No. 2-seeded Scripps Ranch in a semifinal round game March 1 and lost 2-1 on the Falcons' field. Seeded No. 3 in Div. I, the Pointer girls were flying high after a first round bye and a 1-0 victory over No. 11 La Jolla in the quarterfinals last Friday. In the semifinal game, sophomore Abigail Bates' goal in the 37th minute proved the game-winner. She was assisted by senior Jordan Patane, who led her team with four shots. Goalkeeper Taylor Washington, also a sophomore, recorded her 15th win and 14th shutout of the season as the team's record moved to 20-2-2. Patane, who has accepted a scholarship offer to play at Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo) next year, leads the team with 27 goals and 23 assists for 77 points. Sophomore Trinity Watson follows with a line of 17, 15 and 49 points, while classmate Iyana Zimmerman follows at 8, 17 and 33. Junior Riley O'Toole, who joined the team in the second half, has nine goals in only 10 games. Team captains are Patane, O'Toole, Jaquelyn Neves and Natasha Camacho-Bier, who has accepted a scholarship offer from Mercy College of New York.

The Pointers, under head coach John Murphy, have won two CIF titles, including the CIF Div. II title last year in a 1-0 battle with Valhalla that was decided by a penalty kick. In 2009, his girls defeated Mt. Carmel 2-1 in a shootout after both teams played to a 1-1 tie followed by a scoreless overtime period.

Boys soccer The Pointer boys soccer team has quietly been adding victories to its resumé and is also still in the hunt for a CIF title.

After receiving a No. 4 seed and first-round bye in the Div. II tournament, the Dogs inflicted a no-doubt 5-1 bite on No. 12 seed Bishops. At press time, they were awaiting a trip north for a semi-final tussle with No. 1 seed Oceanside, set for yesterday (March 2) at 5 p.m. The Pointers compiled an overall record of 9-5-6 this year (4-1-3, second place to Cathedral Catholic in Western League). They will have their work cut out for them, as Oceanside registered a 17-1-5 record (8-0-2 for first place in the Valley League). The winner is set to play for the championship at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 5 at Olympian High School. Head coach Elliott Savitz' team is led in scoring by senior Luke Raley, who has 20 goals and four assists on the season. Junior Townsend Meyer (5, 5) and senior Jase Souza (5, 3) are next. In goal, sophomore Marley Mascarenas and senior Trevor Eide have split time. In 11 games, Mascarenas has been credited with one win, eight shutouts, and two ties. His goalsagainst average is a stingy 0.8. Appearing in 13 games, Eide's statistics show four wins, six shutouts, four losses and three ties. Prior to this season, the Pointers last won a CIF playoff match in 2013 with a 3-0 win over Steele Canyon.

Two Point Loma High School wrestlers captured CIF championships in their weight classes at the Div. III finals late last month hosted by Del Norte High School. This is the first time in school history two championships were won by team members, according to coach Brian Lamb. Taking the first place medal at 154 pounds was Lamb's son Brian, a senior. Lamb won a 10-9 decision over Mitchell Spencer of La Costa Canyon to take the title. Lamb finished seventh last season. In the 287-pound heavyweight division, it was Pointer football line-

man Arthur Daniels, a junior, who pinned Andrew McDonald, also of La Costa Canyon, for his medal. Daniels rebounded from his fourthplace finish last year. In team standings at the event, PLHS finished in seventh place, with 97 points. Other wrestlers who placed at the event included junior Tomas Ronge (third place at 115 pounds), senior Kele Frost (fifth at 128), sophomore Dylan Reisburg (seventh at 122) and junior Antonio Quintanella (seventh at 162). Lamb, Phil Moore and Miles Doughty share coaching duties and have raised the sport's profile at the school in recent years.

Westy's Bar & Grill in Point Loma started out as a cross between an antique store and a restaurant-bar. But 38-year-old owner James West knew that wouldn't last for long, that one or the other would ultimately prevail. “For the last 1½ years, it's been a bar,” said West, whose establishment, given his nickname, he freely admits is a dream come true. “I always wanted to do that, be in the neighborhood and have a nice little pub here,” he said. But a few antiques still remain in Westy's, mostly in display cases. West bought the retail space at 1029 Rosecrans St., formerly an interior design business, and redid everything inside, including using a wooden deck from the nearby home he grew up in to help refurbish his space. Midway through the conversion, West had a stroke. Which didn't stop him. “I was in the hospital while it was getting finished,” he said. “Some suggested I just forget about it. When I came back out, I decided to keep going with it. I wasn't going to give up. I just keep chugging along the best I can.” West talked about his establishment's appeal. “It's homey; it's pub light,” he said. “I tried to keep it old-fashioned style.

Known for its famously tasty chicken wings, Dirty Birds Bar and Grill has a new place opening in June at Liberty Station, at 2970 Truxtun Road. Co-owner Adam Jacoby says they wanted to open in Liberty Station because there’s a good buzz going on in the area. “We were looking for a new place five years ago, but it wasn’t the right time then; every place was full. Now it was the right time,” he said. The menu of the new Dirty Birds will be the same as the other two restaurants: Chicken wings with 33 different homemade sauces, appetizers, burgers, salads and plates stay the same. Jacoby said that there will be a pizza menu as well. The difference from other Dirty Birds will be the decorations.

The interior design will reflect Liberty Station, Point Loma, military and fishermen backgrounds; and the eatery also has a patio. Jacoby said the family-friendly place will be a good place to watch sports. “I’m excited to meet locals from Liberty Station and Point Loma at June,” Jacoby said. The other Dirty Birds locations are on Mission Boulevard in Pacific Beach and on El Cajon Boulevard near SDSU.

Nati's Celebrates 56 Years in Ocean Beach Nati’s Mexican Restaurant has played a large part in the Ocean Beach community both socially and historically. In 1960, Vern and Charline Lontz created what would be one of Ocean Beach’s greatest dining landmarks. Since then, Nati’s has been serving fine Mexican cuisine coupled with great service and reasonable prices. Their success shows in their six straight “Best Overall Restaurant” awards and 56 years of continued service. Vern Lontz and his wife, Charline, owned and operated Nati’s until retirement in 1972. At that point the company became a corporation. It is now managed and run by the stockholders who are long-time employees. General manager and vice-president Marilyn Thomas started as a hostess in 1969. Dennis Kerr, company president, started as a dishwasher in 1962. Both owners literally “grew up” in the business under the tutelage of Vern Lontz. “Vern’s business plan was simple — good food, good service and a fair price — and remains the foundation of Nati’s popularity,” explained Thomas. That plan continues to serve the business well and has earned it a solid following of loyal, repeat customers. El Niño creates phenomenal whale watching season in San Diego WHALES TALES

Due to the El Niño effect, the Pacific Ocean is a little warmer than usual this time of year, and climate change may also be behind the warmer weather. For those reasons, whales stay near San Diego to feed – and that means that whale watching season is good this year. San Diego Natural History Museum has noticed more than 400 gray whales coming south this season, which is a good number. “This season has been phenomenal,” says Leslie Rapp, San Diego Natural History Museum whaler. “We have seen whales in every cruise except two.” Rapp and her colleagues frequent Hornblower Cruises to tell people about the mammals of the sea. February is the middle of gray whale southern migration, she says, and females are going down to Mexico. Also, northbound whales are on the move, so San Diego is in between the transition of both migrations. According to Joe Terzi, president of the San Diego Tourism Association, San Diego is quickly becoming a top whale-watching destination any-

where in the world. Even in February, it’s fantastically clear, and you can see the whales from three miles away. “In winter season, we see gray whales, humpbacks, finback whales,

four kinds of dolphins, common dolphins, Rissos, white-sided dolphins,” says Rebecca Milkey, director of marketing for Hornblower Cruises. At summertime, she adds, different whales feed near San Diego.

On one Hornblower cruise, we saw whale tails and, after cruising 11 miles out, saw signs of finback and gray whales, which deep-dive for food. Huge flocks of Pacific white-sided dolphins jumped up and

down in the water. This season, tourists haven’t seen a lot of dolphins, so that was a special treat. We noticed that, unlike dolphins, whales move much slower and don’t waste as much energy. Moreover, whales don’t actually sleep the way we understand sleeping. They are conscious breathers, so they have to be awake to come to the surface to breathe. “They somehow shut down half of their brain temporarily to kind of have slow sleep, but they are not completely in a sleep,” Rapp says. “They can still be moving.”

Music a lifelong passion for Doug Booth BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON

He may not quite be a household name, but it’s likely that over the past few decades, bassist Doug Booth has been one of the most heard musicians in town, playing bass with acclaimed local cover band Rockola and taking part in a wealth of musical projects. Set to appear at the Kona Kai Resort’s Vessels restaurant on March 13 as part of the duo Jenny & Doug, Booth is a virtuoso instrumentalist, skilled at bass, guitar and piano as well as flute. The gig is a natural fit for the musical pair, as they were introduced by the venue's general manager, Shauna Aguirre. “She had hired Jenn and her guitarist in the past,” Booth said. “When Jenn and her guitarist stopped playing together, Shauna recommended to both of us that we pair up. So I guess she is the matchmaker of our duo. It is an awesome fit.” While the occasional original is included, the focus in the pair’s sets is covers. “I will play an original solo guitar piece every so often, but our bread and butter are songs that people know and like,” he said. “I would hope most of our songs are crowd pleasers. If they don’t appeal to anyone, then we drop them, unless we love them.” Born and raised in Palo Alto, Calif., Booth arrived in San Diego circa 1984 to finish up his degree at

SDSU. “I was a guitarist but came here with a bass guitar so I could hopefully get some work,” he explained. “In Northern California at that time, if you could play bass, sing and show up on time, you pretty much had a gig. I auditioned and got in several different bands that had gigs on the books so I could make some money to live on as I went to SDSU.” By this point, Booth had been performing for over a decade. “I started playing guitar when I was in the fourth grade,” he recalled. “My mom was a South Dakota State award-winning baritone horn player. She had the music

gene in the family. She played piano and guitar as well, so I got interested in guitar because she played. She used to say she taught me everything she knew in one week.” Soon after, he began taking lessons and was learning Beatles songs with instructor Jack Conway in Menlo Park. “He slowly started introducing me to jazz chords and voicings using Beatles songs as the format and then one day pulled out a jazz standard, and that was the beginning of me becoming a jazz guitarist. Grandparenting: ‘Far away and always in heart’ By HANNA LAUKKANEN Humans are one of the rare species that have three or even four generations alive at the same time. This is important because human children are dependent on their parents longer than any other mammal species. Grandparents hold an important role taking care of the children when parents aren’t available. Natasha Josefowitz has been a grandmother for 35 years and soon will be a great-grandmother. All four of her biological grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren live across the country, far away from San Diego and still close to her heart. “It is totally different to be a parent than a grandparent,” Josefowitz said. “As a parent, you’re responsible for the behavior of your children. As a grandparent, your only duty is to admire and support them. Criticism should always be about a specific behavior, not a general term. For instance, it is better to say 'When you were late yesterday, I was upset because we missed doing what I had planned' as opposed to angrily stating 'You’re always late.' It is equally important to be specific with praise — instead of 'you are wonderful,' state a specific behavior worthy of praise.” Josefowitz has lectured on various topics, including grandparenting. One of the favorite lectures of her cruise ship audiences was about living with your children who are not raising their chil-

Josefowitz sums it up in two words: “Shut up.” She believes in serving as an example of being a vital and fun senior. As a model, the grandchildren will remember when they are old and will hopefully follow suit. When Josefowitz's grandchildren were young, they spent summers at her home. She told them stories about the time when their parents were young as well as stories from great-great-grand-

parents they never met so the children would know where they come from. She also wrote about the things her children did when they were little, and she gave these notes to them when they had their own children. It was a lot of fun to compare behaviors across the generations. Josefowitz and her grandchildren email, call, Skype and sometimes visit each other. but by then administration of lighthouses had been transferred (in 1939) to the U.S. Coast Guard. America’s lighthouse keepers either retired or took military commissions based on years served. Joan and Patricia had no other reference but that home was confined within a military reservation. Head keeper, Milford Johnson, had a daughter, Lexi. There were few others who came and went with whom to play. A particularly memorable incident took place in January of 1944, when the girls were reading on the sun porch of their home, below a large window with 105 small panes of glass. The front door, with its large embossed pane, stood in a nearby alcove. When the winter sun became too warm, the girls moved into the living room, closing the door behind them. “We were not there long,” Joan said, “when KABOOM! The glass in the front door blew into the sun porch, shards of it embedding inches into the floor.” As happened, a defective fuse in a 6-inch, high explosive projectile caused a premature detonation at nearby Battery Humphreys. Five soldiers were killed in the blast. “We were isolated out there,” Joan recalls. “We ate plenty of fresh lobster caught in traps dad set in the eelgrass. And we pounded lots of abalone. Dad would reach under the rocks with a tire iron and bring gunny sacks full up to the house.” The kids often rode Army transport vehicles to school in Loma Portal. Both girls graduated from Point Loma High School. Patricia says, “I was in the first class to spend three years at Dana Junior High, 1943-46, and then Point Loma High, 1946-49.” Roller-skating in the old underground mess hall and on the cement catch basin was a favorite pastime. A swimming hole with tiger sharks showed itself at low tide. Baby octopuses were lugged to biology class. “We had a path near the flagpole down to the beach below the lighthouse,” Patricia says. “There were times I asked Dad if we could go to a real beach like Ocean Beach.” He’d scold, “You have your own beach!” Had the keeper been aware that his daughters dreamed of experiences beyond their lighthouse home? “Mother made sure we had nice clothes to wear,” Joan remembers. “Dad had strict beliefs, that one needed very few clothes. Mother was a seamstress and made our dresses for little or nothing.” James Dudley was all business when it came to lighthouse and groundskeeping. “We had to be quiet when dad was sleeping after he worked his night shifts. We didn’t make a sound.” Lightkeepers, it seems, were jacksof all trades. prise visit. Great gardens were groomed, glorious flowers and trees. Fruits and vegetables were raised to supplement meager incomes. Gun-bearing bunkers were visible from the keepers’ gardens. And just 70 feet from the house stood a 50mm anti-aircraft machine gun. Violet’s children wore dog tags and were practiced in the use of gas masks and the taste of malt tablets, all stored in a partial basement under the kitchen. “Wafer-like, a quarter-inch thick, chalky and malty. We didn’t like them,” Joan says. “And we had a battalion of 300 men camped in our backyard.” A home-built HAM radio station filled a portion of the Dudley dining room. Cousin Franklin reminded the girls that their father was in the wireless loop looking for Amelia Earhart when her plane went missing in 1937. Wireless operators were also called into war service. War, indeed! The bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941 affected changes at Point Loma Light Station. Keepers were assigned duties elsewhere in the war effort. Dudley, an expert in electronics, was put in charge of the LORAN station (long-range navigation) across from the cemetery. Armed guards stood watch at the station. The light in the tower went dark. Windows were covered with tarpaper. Dwellings, the tower, out-

buildings, fences and even the sidewalks were painted in olive-drab camouflage. Keeper Johnson rigged a light under the front fender of his car, for what light it provided going down the long hill at night. Patricia remembers standing out on the point watching fighter planes leaving North Island for carriers at sea. “I counted to 1,000, as far as I could count.” James Dudley was promoted head keeper in 1939, and the family relocated to the big house that had been added to the station in 1913. Dudley retired from the Coast Guard in 1950, and the family left the light station to settle in a home with an avocado orchard on Mount Helix. The girls married, moved on, raised children, took jobs, and enjoy grandand great-grandchildren. Today, Patricia lives in Crest, Calif. You can occasionally find her at Cabrillo National Monument wearing a lightkeeper’s uniform and volunteering for the Park Service. Its Living History program is fully enriched: Patricia is living history! Joan’s home is in Klamath Falls, Ore. Brother Robert resides in Germany. Patricia and Joan, ultimately, experienced the far-flung world beyond Point Loma Light Station. “Yet coming home,” Patricia sighs, “it feels like it belongs to us regardless of time.”

Theater in Ocean Beach: It’s about believing in love BY HANNA LAUKKANEN | THE BEACON

Circle Circle dot dot's “San Diego, I Love You (I Love You Not)” managed to keep its Ocean Beach audience on the move on Feb. 28. Locations changed while the audience sipped beer at a bar, witnessed a fight at a parking lot and followed main characters Jamie and Riley to their favorite spot in this, the theater group's third “I Love You” entry. Circle Circle, founded in 2010, writes and produces San Diegospecific plays in an effort to fuel local interest in theater and San Diego history. Mobility is a great challenge to a play, requiring the glue that keeps acting together. Once in a while during the play, the intense chemistry of the characters was not that strong because of the movement. The beautiful part of the locales, however, is that they are genuine. It’s easy to imagine that break-ups, mourning periods and getting back together actually happen at those alleys, bars, streets and parks in Ocean Beach. The audience doesn’t have to imagine that much. Playwright Katherine Harroff's

dialogue and Soroya Rowley and Crystal Brandon's direction were witty, heartbreaking and real. I understood how horrible and demanding we females can be when it comes to relationships, and usually we can’t control it ourselves. Characters Jamie and Riley are a modern, wealthy Western couple who have the luxury of time and space to think about how they feel about relationships and what their future should be. The play portrays how too much thinking messes relationships up and how we settle with compromises even though it sometimes is not good for us. The actors had internalized the misery of broken hearts, the problems of being together and the hard time being alone. In the final scene, the audience was the judge – it decided whether Jamie and Riley should stay together or break up. It was a brilliant mind game, because it forced the audience to identify with the characters and also to challenge their own mindset about love. When we voted “Stay together,” we were told that we believe in love. Why not believe?

The services will be held in the lower parking lot, giving those who attend a great early morning panoramic view of San Easter Sunrise Service Diego Harbor and the city behind it. at Cabrillo Monument Club president Matt Lemas points The Kiwanis Club of Point Loma out that this year’s services will mark the 67th consecutive year that the Kiwanis Club of Point Loma has staged the service. The gates will open at 6 a.m., with the nondenominational service beginning at 6:30 a.m. There is seating for approximately 700, and the public is encouraged to arrive early. The speakers this year are Capt. Howard Warner, Commanding Officer, Naval Base Point Loma; Mike Servais, Lt. Governor, Kiwanis Division 21; and Jon Linney, Vice President Point Loma Kiwanis Club. Chaplain Terry Gordon, third fleet chaplain, will conduct the service. This year, the soloist will be Jojo Cadwell, to be accompanied by Brent Johnson, who will also provide the musical prelude to the service. The Naval Base Point Loma Color Guard will open the ceremony. The National Park Service has provided the Cabrillo National Monument facilities for the Easter services for the past 65 years. Visitor and parking fees are not in effect for the services. A fellowship time with coffee, tea and pastries will occur immediately following the services.

Peninsula Singers choir rehearsals The Peninsula Singers community choir welcomes singers with any level of experience to join them for the spring season. No audition is needed. Rehearsals are every Monday night, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the community room at Point Loma Hervey Branch Library at 3701 Voltaire St. The spring theme, leading up to May and June performances, is the music of Leonard Bernstein, including songs from his Broadway musicals – “West Side Story,” “Candide,” “Peter Pan” and “Wonderful Town” – and classical selections from his Mass and Chichester Psalms.
