Free rides, mini-sub exhibits to highlight Sunroad Boat Show BY NICOLE SOURS LARSON | THE BEACON For relief from the winter doldrums, remind and refresh yourself with the pleasures of recreational boating at the San Diego Sunroad Boat Show, which debuts on Thursday, Jan. 24 and continues through Sunday, Jan. 27. The location is at the east end of Harbor Island, at Sunroad Resort Marina, 955 Harbor Island Drive. Show hours are noon to 6 p.m. on Jan. 24 and 25, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Jan. 26 and 27. This year’s show, the 24th annual event and the fourth at Sunroad, boasts about 125 sail and powered vessels to explore and inspect — 25 percent more than last year. “We’re considered the largest sail display in Southern California, with new vessels from Jeanneau, Bénéteau, Hunter, Tartan and Catalina, as well as several catamarans from 38 to 51 feet,” said show director Jim Behun, who doubles as the marina’s general manager. The in-the-water vessels are split about equally between sail and power offerings. Unlike many boat shows, the Sunroad show offers both new and brokerage, or used, boats from 35 feet up to the

BY MARIKO LAMB | THE BEACON A police trailer that was once deemed a “temporary fix” to deter criminal activity in Ocean Beach has sat at the same location in the pier’s parking lot for more than a decade. While some call the trailer a view-blocking blight to area residents, others say its function as a deterrent to crime has proven successful over the years, bolstering businesses and the safety of residents in the area. When local property owner Vince Adame filed a complaint to the California Coastal Commission about a code violation — specifically that the trailer was never issued a coastal development permit (CDP) — debate flared about the police trailer’s use, purpose and aesthetic appeal at its location by the sea. According to police Lt. Natalie Stone, who was put in charge of handling the notice of violation, the trailer was installed in the parking lot after the Newport Avenue police substation closed in 1999 because of the city’s financial duress. OB planners get creative to stimulate voter interest, draw new membership BY TONY DE GARATE | THE BEACON To generate interest in annual elections, the Ocean Beach Planning Board (OBPB) is inviting Obeceans to write their very own advisory propositions on a matter of their choosing. All it takes is 35 signatures in the community, and your referendum — as long as it’s not frivolous — will appear on the March 12 ballot. It’s one of the two novel touches — the other being online or absentee balloting — intended to create more buzz and increase participation on election day, when voters select seven of the 14 planning-board members for two-year terms.
Like the other 40-odd community planning groups holding annual elections in March, the OBPB can only make recommendations to the city regarding landuse and quality-of-life issues. But with a new mayor at City Hall who has stressed a renewed dedication to the neighborhoods, it could be an exciting time for democracy at the community level, said Landry Watson, who sits on the OBPB’s Election Committee. “These propositions will be advisory only — we can’t make the city lower our taxes,” Watson said. “But we’re hoping we can SEE PLANNERS, Page 4

A portion of Mission Beach’s crumbling historic seawall and boardwalk will receive a desperately needed facelift to restore the deteriorated and patchwork concrete to its glory days of 88 years ago. Thanks to a $700,000 state grant secured through a collaborative effort by city and state legislators, nearly 900 feet of the concrete wall and boardwalk adjacent to the iconic Belmont Park will be completely rebuilt late this year. The grant, which was awarded by the California Department of Water Re-
sources’ Local Levee Assistance Program, will help offset the $2.4 million price tag for the project, which the City Council appropriated in its 2012 budget from capital improvement bonds for the design, permit process and repair of the most damaged portion of the 1925 seawall and boardwalk. “This is one of the first things our visitors see, our wonderful and beautiful beaches,” said Mayor Bob Filner during a Jan. 4 multi-party press conference in Mission Beach. “And it’s one of the things our residents use. We literally have crumbling infrastructure. skate, repairs to the seawall will also protect the surrounding beach homes and businesses from flooding spawned by wrathful storms or high tidal surges emanating from the Pacific. “This has been a problem for years,” said District 2 City Councilman Kevin Faulconer, who has worked with the Mission Beach community on the issue over the last several years. “We’ve made some temporary patches, cut off some of the rebar that was falling down, but we knew that we had to have a permanent solution because this patchwork isn’t going to get it done.” Faulconer, at the urging of the Mission Beach Town Council, helped kickstart the capital improvement project by spearheading the effort to approve funding for repairs to the historic seawall, an objective achieved in last year’s budget as part of the city’s $100 million infrastructure bond. State Assemblywoman Toni Atkins led the effort on the state level to ensure the city’s grant application got the proper review and was ultimately granted funds, ensuring the first phase of the city’s repair project can now begin. “It’s really to imagine a more iconic place in San Diego; at the ocean, at the boardwalk in Mission Beach in the shadow of our Belmont Park roller coaster,” said Atkins. “Last fall, all of America watched in horror as Superstorm Sandy destroyed other iconic boardwalks, homes and businesses along the East Coast, and with climate change and the rising sea level that comes with it, we know that it’s just a matter of time until a major storm sweeps our coast and endangers our beachfront, which is so critical to our way of life in San Diego and to our local economy.” The design and permitting processes will begin late this year and construction is expected to begin in 2014.

Hundreds turn out in support of shooting victim, a PLHS alum BY SCOTT HOPKINS | THE BEACON Hundreds of members of the Peninsula community packed a local music venue on Jan. 19 in the second major fundraiser for shooting victim Will Barton. Barton’s father, Will, mother Marie Najera and stepfather R.J. Lonsdale were on hand along with family friends and supporters. “This is just unbelievable,” the senior Barton shouted over the music as he surveyed the jammed Humphreys Backstage Lounge. Barton’s 20-year-old son, a 2010 PLHS alum, was shot three times in the early morning hours of Oct. 29 as he walked to his dad’s house after a latenight restaurant work shift. The shooter, a wanted criminal who mistook Barton for a police officer, was shot to death in a shootout with police on Halloween night in Barrio Logan. Though the younger Barton was given less than a 1 percent chance of survival, Barton has watched his son fight through grave injuries to reach his current rehabilitation battle. One bullet remains lodged in his son’s brain. Three weeks in intensive care, multiple surgeries and the intense work of dozens of doctors and physical therapists has run up astronomical medical bills on Barton’s insurance. Adding fur-

But on Jan. 19, the music of three different bands kept the energy level high inside the Shelter Island venue, as
the six-hour event saw donors show up by the dozens from the moment doors opened. A $10 donation was requested at the door by event organizer Rhonda Pitta and a crew of volunteers. Participants gingerly moved about the standingroom-only space, selling raffle tickets for items that were given away hourly during band breaks and changes. In the facility’s hallway, Pitta’s helpers set up about three dozen donated items up for silent auction, including a one-week stay in a Vail, Colo. resort, sportfishing trips and much more. Donors swarmed over the items, adding their names to lists even after the auction prices had exceeded the items’ stated values. Airport Authority bonds garner high ratings from credit agencies Three major credit-rating agencies have given high marks to bonds to be issued by the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority for continued funding of The Green Build Terminal 2 expansion program and a variety of programs in the capital improvement program for San Diego International Airport. The ratings came from Fitch Ratings, Moody’s Investor Services and Standard & Poor’s. On Jan. 8, Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services assigned its A+ long-term rating to the Airport Authority’s anticipated series 2013 senior airport revenue bonds of about $411 million. In addition, the agency affirmed its A rating on the Airport Authority’s subordinate air-
port revenue bonds and assigned a stable rating outlook on all bonds. According to a news release from Standard & Poor’s, the affirmation and outlook were based on “dominant market position within the air service area,” “continued very strong financial performance into fiscal 2012” and a “management team that we view as stable and experienced, implementing prudent board policies and guidelines related to financial metrics, debt management and investments.” On Jan. 7, Fitch Ratings assigned an A+ rating to San Diego County Regional Airport Authority’s $411 million series 2013 senior airport revenue bonds. Fitch also affirmed its A rating on outstanding subordinate revenue
bonds. The rating outlook on all bonds is stable. Also on Jan. 7, Moody’s Investors Services assigned an A1 rating to the airport’s anticipated series 2013 senior airport revenue bonds, affirmed its A2 rating on the Airport Authority’s subordinate airport revenue bonds and assigned a rating outlook of stable. LANDRY WATSON If you’re interested in land use and other neighborhood issues in Point Loma, Feb. 21 could be an important day for you. It’s the last time the Peninsula Community Planning Board (PCPB) holds a regular meeting before annual elections on March 21. For prospective candidates, it could be the last chance to satisfy a requirement to attend a meeting in the calendar year before election day. Planning boards are formally recognized by the city to make recommendations on land-use planning, quality-of-life issues, rezones, code-enforcement issues, public facilities and the like. The PCPB represents these neighborhoods: Ocean Beach Highlands, Point Loma Highlands Loma Alta, Loma Palisades, Loma Portal, Fleetridge, Roseville, Sunset Cliffs, Wooded Area, La Playa, Roseville and Liberty Station. The board meets the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Point Loma/Hervey Branch Library, 3701 Voltaire St. A candi-

engage the community and remove obstacles for both voters and candidates.” Advisory propositions are not without precedent in Ocean Beach, but they haven’t appeared in several years. Previous ballots have dealt with issues like rent control and the beach-alcohol ban, and Watson said he’s eager to see what citizens will come up with this time around. The board will also consider propositions for inclusion on the ballot at its next monthly meeting on Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. at the Ocean Beach Recreation Center, 4726 Santa Monica Ave. This year will also mark the first-ever use of online balloting. In previous elections, voters have had to show up at the Ocean Beach Recreation Center during a three-hour window on election day. Feedback has shown that’s too constraining, and last year’s voter turnout was one of the lowest ever, Landry said. This year, citizens who prefer to vote online need only register in advance. “We’ve received a lot of complaints in the past from people who couldn’t make it on election day,” Watson said. To run for the OBPB or vote in the election, a citizen must be at least 18 years old and have lived, owned property or run a business in the Ocean Beach planning area for at least 30 days. In
addition, candidates must collect 35 signatures from eligible voters in the district in which they run. The planning area is split into seven districts – boundaries can be found at oceanbeachpb.com. Hopefuls must also have attended at least one meeting in the calendar year before election day.

Quinn has replaced Geoff Page, who resigned recently, citing work demands.

For the Pointers, despite finishing 84 overall (4-1, second place in league) the 12 selections are a tribute to the team’s talent and work ethic. Western League champion Madison High, which edged the Pointers 28-14 on Nov. 2 for the league crown, went on to both a local CIF Div. IV and state CIF Div. III championship. All-Western League honors went to the following Pointers: • First team, offense: Jake Wambaugh, (Jr.): (6’3,” 250 pounds) The junior tight end was singled out for his blocking skills that helped produce 2,586 rushing yards for the Pointers. He also is a starter at defensive end. Mark Nou, (Sr.): Far from the biggest of offensive linemen (5’10,” 210 pounds), Nou proved to be a tenacious blocker while anchoring the Pointer run and pass blocking. • First team, defense: Western League “Defensive Player of the Year:” Jamal Agnew, (Sr.): A fearless player who, at 5’8” and 150 pounds, drew reactions from crowds as he racked up 72 tackles. He grabbed six pass interceptions and returned punts and kickoffs, scoring touchdowns in each. Pound-for-pound, one of the county’s top players. Zach Eischen, (Sr.): After making the jump from freshman team to varsity as a sophomore, Eischen excelled. From his free safety position, the 6’2,” 195pounder was credited with 67 tackles this season and returned four interceptions 126 yards, scoring twice. Greg Verdugo, (Sr.): From his linebacker position, Verdugo, in his No. 53 jersey, wreaked havoc on opponents’ offensive plans. The 6-foot, 200pounder led the Pointers with 94 tackles and was credited with three sacks, broke up three passes and blocked a punt. Other PLHS athletes named to all-league honors Several PLHS athletes were selected for all-league honors in fall sports. They include: Sophomore volleyball player Faith Smith was selected to the first team, All-Western League. The Pointers finished 14-19 overall (4-6 in league). In boys’ water polo, senior Kye Miranda scored 69 goals and added 12 assists to earn an All-Eastern League second team berth. The Pointers finished 7-24 overall (0-8 in league). In girls’ field hockey, senior Erin Green earned first team Western League honors. Teammate Sara Wildman, also a senior, was named to the second team. Sailing in a 28-boat “Gold” fleet, the Pointers’ varsity boat took first place with a point total of 80, a runaway victory over second place Coronado High School with 109 points. Additionally, one of the Pointer junior varsity boats took fourth place overall with 121 points. Members of the varsity boat crew included Scott Sinks, Rebecca McElvain, Greer Wattson, AJ Reiter, Mercedes McPhee and Trevor Hecht. The junior varsity boat was manned by Will La Dow, Jennifer Johnson, Andy Reiter, Halea Holesak and Luke Kellerhouse. La Dow had just returned from Florida where, with crew Nikki Obel, he won the Club 420 competition in a field of 74 boats at the Orange Bowl Regatta the previous week. Pointer coach Steve Hunt, 37, told Rose Bowl organizers his team is only getting better. “It’s the largest team I’ve had. We get 15 boats on the water in practice, and I think success breeds success,” Hunt said. The Rose Bowl Regatta victory keeps the Pointers atop the 2012-13 standings for the Roy E. Disney Trophy, awarded annually to the top sailing program in the Pacific Coast Interscholastic Sailing Association (PCISA). Stanford University won the collegiate division of the regatta. The next PCISA-Disney event is the Golden Bear Regatta, taking place Feb. 23-24 at the Treasure Island Sailing Center.

Helen Jordan: July 26, 1925-Dec. 11, 2012 Helen Jordan lived in the Ocean Beach community for more than 60 years. In her younger days she enjoyed riding the waves on her mat, soaking up the sun and daily walks around Ocean Beach, meeting new friends and telling jokes.
Every Saturday morning was spent solving the New York Times crossword puzzle, conversing with friends when the clues became difficult. Helen passed away peacefully with her family at her side.
She was predeceased by husband Buck and son David. Helen is survived by son Curtis (Salley) Jordan; daughters Louise (Joe) Johnston, Jo Anne (Stephan) Kalber; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Helen will be missed by many.

Gotta Have Heart: Heartfelt Collages Sophie’s Gallery, the off-campus art program of St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center that serves adults with developmental disabilities, experimented with felt making, an ancient art form that dates back 3,500 years. Their creations of framed soft felt collages entitled Heartfelt are featured at Sophie’s Gallery & Gift Shop during February’s Friday Night Liberty at NTC Liberty Station. The artwork is part of our annual Gotta’ Have Heart show and is on exhibit through March 31. Artists started with a bolt of 100% wool felt, which they hand-dyed into soft muted tones. They cut, stitched and stuffed the felt, layering pieces together with a process called felting which interlocks the fibers using felting tools. The Ramones tribute band set to rock the house New York-based punk quartet The Ramones were one of the most important bands to emerge from the 1970s. Its debut album set off an explosion of new bands, inspired by the band’s fast, short, sharp songs like “Rockaway Beach” and “Rock ’n’ Roll Radio.” Influencing everyone from Pearl Jam to U2, it’s only logical that a number of bands pay homage to the foursome. Luckily for The Ramones fans, one of
the best, Hey! Ho! Let’s Go!, is from the San Diego area. Named for the Ramone’s signature chant and, like the Ramones, taking a unified family surname, the band started in 2008 with the current lineup of vocalist Alan Ho, guitarist T.J. Ho, drummer Chris Ho and bassist Dee Bee Ho, together since 2011. According to bassist Dee Bee Ho, the reason for forming the band was simply to
champion its musical heroes’ music. “We're all huge fans of The Ramones,” he said. “They were such a fun band. They weren't in it for commercial success. They weren't trying to change the world. They were having fun. They were expressing themselves. They were saying, ‘Hey look, you don't have to be amazingly talented to express yourself through music.’ We wanted to do our part to make sure the Ramones were never forgotten.” The quartet does its best re-create both the look and the sound of the group they are honoring. “I feel the guys do a great job looking the part,” Ho said. “I have a little more difficult of a time looking the part of Dee Dee Ramone. He was a little smaller than me. Basically, it's just a T-shirt and tore-up jeans with a leather jackets and some Chucks.” While the look isn’t too difficult to achieve, the band puts a lot of effort into getting its sound just right. “It was important to use the same instruments as The Ramones,” Ho said. “I think mostly for the guitar. Johnny Ramone had such a unique, raw and powerful sound. Our guitar player Tim does have pretty much the same setup as Johnny. Tim does a great job with playing all downstroke. It's very tiring to play downstrokes that fast for a long period of time.” Hey! Ho! Let’s Go! tries to give an accurate depiction of a typical Ramones concert back in the day, with a major excep-

tion. “The Ramones were famous for playing 20-minute sets. Clubs today wouldn't appreciate that,” Ho said. “The songs are short and sweet, just like songs should be. We play sets ranging from 45 minutes to playing three one-hour sets. In true Ramones fashion, we don't spend a lot of time talking on stage. We like to go from one song to the next.” The band plays all of The Ramones’ best-known songs, from “Blitzkreig Bop” to “I Wanna Be Sedated.” but also tries to include a lot of less-obvious choices. “We go pretty deep into the catalog,” Ho said. “We all have our different favorites. I think some of The Ramones’ best songs are ones you don't hear on the radio, (like) “I Believe in Miracles” and “I
Wanna Be Your Boyfriend.” It’s been five years since Hey! Ho! Lets Go! First hit the club circuit, but according to Ho, the band members all still enjoy The Ramones’ music as much as ever. He considers the band ambassadors of sorts for the original punk rockers. “The best part to me is introducing The Ramones to people who may not know much about them,” he said. “And for people who are already Ramones fans, we give them an opportunity to relive the past and enjoy the music and the band that influenced so many of the biggest bands in the world.” Hey! BY MARTIN JONES WESTLIN | THE BEACON The smaller the live theater, the bigger the idea — or at least that’s what the local artistic directors like to say. Another way to put it is that seating tends to shrink dramatically in the face of bolder, edgier work, and venue size often signals a city’s trend accordingly, said backers. Chicago, for example, has 200 theater companies; about 140 of those play in spots with 99 or fewer seats. The proportion is about the same in Los Angeles, with its 220 troupes. San Diego, eighth-largest city in the nation, has about 50 theatrical companies. That isn’t bad — until you realize it has a grand total of seven tiny spaces for all those quirky, gigantic dreams. Does that make San Diego theater a lousy bet by comparison? Not really. It may mean that local audiences are simply unfamiliar with edgy performances, not that they reject them out of hand. The latest entrant on that skimpy roster of spaces was designed to make a difference in that part of the equation — and it sits in a cultural oasis, where postmodern ideas are a stock in trade. It’s called The White Box Theater, located at 2590 Truxton Road at Liberty Station. It opened in May to the first of several dance events after having undergone a $31,000 renovation, which included the installation of a spring floor designed to absorb shock, a small but upto-date sound system and 135 seats on three tiers. The seating is customizable for productions in the round and for arena staging. It’s also completely removable over the theater’s 2,600 square feet. “It’s up to the artist to make of it what they want,” said Blythe Barton, San Diego Dance Theatre company member and manager of the space. “We’ve designed it as a live-arts space, and the small size makes it comfortable for edgy, clean, fresh material. body … says they love the view.” Plays and recitals by the cutting-edge Circle Circle dot dot theater group, which normally mounts its productions at Downtown’s 10th Avenue Theatre and Arts Centre and San Carlos-based Visionary Dance Theatre are upcoming for 2013. Jean Isaacs, San Diego Dance Theatre (SDDT) artistic director since 1997, agrees with the size aspect of the formula. She blanched on learning of this city’s paltry small-venue inventory — if artistic growth is any indication, she said, little spaces should become de rigueur in San Diego’s near future. “We may be a little bit ahead on big ideas,” she said of San Diego’s arts communities. “Since I’ve been [SDDT artistic director], there’s just been so much movement in dance and the arts, just constant moving, moving, moving, with more groups and more artists.” Indeed, San Diego has seen an explosion in the growth of dance since SDDT’s founding in 1972, and those 50 local theater companies are up from virtually three as 1990 approached (moreover, two of those, The Old Globe and The Starlight theaters, are in the same locale). But all those new groups would likely balk at the space’s biggest technical
drawback. Technical directors prefer black curtains and walls because they contain no color, making them the ideal surfaces on which colored lights register. As of now, The White Box lives up to half its name — the walls are blindingly without color, making light design problematic. “That’s if we leave them that way,” said Isaacs, whose SDDT is the space’s anchor tenant. “We can configure the seats. We can also configure black curtains to [line] the space. And this is only 135 seats, so the [project] wouldn’t be that big.” For now, The White Box Theater is a space whose time has come. Four potential performance groups are headquartered at Dance Place San Diego, less than a block away. The second phase of the NTC buildout was completed in November, when eight buildings opened and 14 new tenants set up shop in Liberty Station’s arts and cultural district; the White Box had opened six months before to welcome them. Liberty Station is that much closer to completion and the White Box is a major addition to the breadth of artistic expression it represents. ENJOY THE BEAUTY OF OLD TOWN All Beasts Blessed in Old Town Last Sunday The fourth annual Blessing of the Animals in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park attracted more than 500 attendees and their pets this past Sunday. This was the highest attendance recorded in the event’s history. From a blue tonged lizard to a wolf hybrid dog, all animals were blessed by Monsignor Mark Campbell. Participating exhibitors included animal adoption agencies such as the Chihuahua Rescue of San Diego and Shelly’s Shelter. Chopper the Biker Dog and Sindi Somers were on hand to entertain and educate the crowd. Sponsored by Old Town’s Fiesta de Reyes, the event also featured a pet costume contest and a pet and owner look-a-like contest. Historically, this event has been happening for more than 300 years – dating back to the 1700s. The present day event is modeled after annual Benediction of the Beasts which celebrates St. Anthony of the Desert, the Patron Saint of Animals. Kearny, Mission Bay clusters hold enrollment fairs Schools in the Kearny and Mission Bay high school clusters will hold allschool fairs at their campuses on Saturday, Jan. 26. Each school in the community will have displays on their curriculum and what makes the school special. The Kearny-area fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the high school, 7651 Wellington St. Mission Bay High is the site for the Pacific Beach schools fair from noon to 3 p.m., 2475 Grand Ave. Both fairs are free and open to the public. The schools are holding these events ahead of the Feb. 15 school choice deadline. At Mission Bay, the six Pacific Beach schools — Sessions Elementary, Pacific Beach Elementary, Crown Point Junior Music Academy, Barnard Mandarin Chinese School, Pacific Beach Middle and Mission Bay High — will have informational booths, activities for the kids and performances throughout the afternoon. The Mission Bay Cluster All Schools Fair will be the perfect opportunity for interested parents and students to meet the principals of each school and learn about the incredibly wide range of programming being offered right in their own backyard. The International Baccalaureate Program will be highlighted at Mission Bay High, Pacific Beach Middle and Sessions Elementary, as well as the music programs at Crown Point, the GATE/ Seminar program at Pacific Beach Elementary and the Mandarin Chinese Magnet program at Barnard, which will move into the neighborhood in 201314. There will be food, games and tons of information about the Pacific Beach schools. At Kearny High, the 16 elementary, middle and high schools in the Serra Mesa and Linda Vista communities that comprise the cluster will highlight their core instructional programs and the extras at their sites. Several early childhood programs (Pre-K) are offered at the elementary schools, and many students at the Kearny High Educational Complex begin attending classes at Mesa College in 11th grade, some completing one year or more of college by high school graduation (the 13 in PreK to 13). Three pumpkins on the picnic bench inside Silver Gate Elementary’s 6-yearold school garden aren’t Halloween remnants. Grown in one of the garden’s 10 raised beds, they were part of a lesson on circumference for fourth-graders. Everything in this garden in a corner of the playground, and a new one outside the school’s kindergarten area, becomes lessons, including the worm bin donated by Solana Center.

workshop for college funds Cal-SOAP’s “Cash for College” workshop will offer students and parents assistance with applying for various programs that offer federal funding for college. The workshop will cover the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and Dream Act applications. The workshops will be offered Jan. 26, Feb. 2 and Feb. 23 at high schools throughout the district. You will also learn about a $1,000 scholarship opportunity through Cal-SOAP.
