Surfers honor legend with paddle-out

Ocean Beach restaurateur promotes participation in pet adoption project BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON Though he’s not likely to win again this year, Jeff Levitt, co-owner of Shades restaurant in Ocean Beach and the 2014 winner of the Pet-Friendly Business Award, encourages people to participate in the annual San Diego Humane Society competition. The Society’s annual Animal Compassion Awards recognize and pay tribute to extraordinary animals and animal lovers throughout San Diego County. Nominations are collected in three categories: animal impact, humane hero, and pet-friendly destination. Award submissions are being accepted through Feb. 13 for individuals and businesses who’ve demonstrated “an exceptional level of compassion” toward animals. Winners will be featured in the July 2015 issue of San Diego Pets magazine. Levitt was granted the award in the destination category, not only because his oceanfront bistro is pet friendly but also because of the quarterly adoption events he hosts there. The events have led to homes for more than 175 pets in the past two years. “Anything we can do to help promote

11 women testify on nude photos in 'revenge porn' trial Eleven women have testified to the consequences of their nude photos having been posted online by a “revenge porn” website operator who sought money in exchange for the pictures' deletions. Twenty more women were expected to testify after the extortion and identity theft trial opened Jan. 16 against Kevin Christopher Bollaert, 28, of Pacific Beach, accused of operating the now-closed website “You Got Posted.” Most of the women testified they suspected former boyfriends shared the photos, but some still do not know how their photos got on the site. “I paid the blackmail fee of $350,” said one woman before the eightwoman, four-man jury. Emily Rose-Weber, Bollaert’s attorney, objected to the witness’ use of the word “blackmail” and was overruled by San Diego Superior Court Judge David Gill. Rose-Weber wanted it stricken, but Gill replied, “That’s her characterization, which the jury can consider.” The site was opened Dec. 2, 2012, and was taken down in September 2013 by the state’s attorney general office. A lifelong surfer, Ault won the Masters U.S. Surfing Championship in Huntington Beach in 1970 and the Hawaii Seniors Competition in 1980. Ault is survived by Sally, his wife of 47 years, and his daughter Jessica.

Is it illegal…if you’re not taking the photos?” Rose-Weber told jurors that Bollaert “didn’t invent” the idea of taking down photographs for a fee, saying, “Many websites have take down service.” She said he ran it “as a business” and urged jurors to find him not guilty of all 31 counts, which include conspiracy. Deputy Attorney General Tawnya Austin said Bollaert posted the women's names, ages, work and home phone numbers, and hometowns and demanded money in exchange for the photos to be taken down. “The victims clearly suffered,” Austin said. “He tried to ridicule these people,” she added, noting that the website was “not a bulletin board where ideas of freedom of speech” are debated. Rose-Weber talked about her client providing “a blank canvas” on which people could post comments. Only Bollaert, she said, could remove the photos for a fee on another website, called changemyreputation.com. All 11 women said their pictures on Facebook were hacked onto Bollaert’s website without their permission. No men’s photos were posted. Several recalled crude comments allegedly made to them by strangers, who even called them at work. The victims’ family members were also apparently contacted by strangers by using the information from their Facebook accounts. – Neal Putnam
Residents of Point Loma's Roseville neighborhood took the first step in a long-term project, cleaning a vacant lot along Canon Street earmarked for conversion into a pocket park. In what some are calling a “pivotal moment,” Burtech Pipeline on Jan. 10 provided approximately $15,000 in heavy equipment and supplies and, with the help of several community volunteers, cleaned up the .28-acre open space parcel at the upper end of Avenida de Portugal where it dead-ends before reaching Canon Street. Removed were cans, bottles and other urban trash as well as dead acacia trees and tumbleweeds that represented a fire hazard. Also cleared were years of accumulated construction debris: steel girders, cinder blocks, blocks of concrete, dumploads of gravel and once-molten asphalt. Thanks to tree pruning, a dangerous blind curve along Canon Street is now much more visible. It is hoped the clean-up will slow or stop site erosion while money is raised and planning done to develop the park. The small undeveloped parcel on Canon Street was transferred from the Public Works Department to Park and Recreation on June 30, 2014, and is now a designated park site. community redevelopment project. Sevrens said they approached the city first about doing site clean-up but were told the city “had no money. “So we asked Burtech,” Sevrens said, “and they agreed to do the work on a Saturday with their own people and equipment at their expense with the help of 11 community volunteers, both neighbors and activists.” Sevrens added the work party was well received. “Motorists driving by gave us the thumbs-up,” he said. “Neighbors left their homes and came up and said, ‘We really approve of what you’re doing. We will approach the county for a possible grant.” But Sevrens conceded that “most of the money, maybe all,” is going to have to come through private donations. “To that end, we will do everything we can to keep the cost down,” Sevrens said. “If we can quickly land major donations, great. Otherwise, we anticipate opening the park in phases so the public will be able to see and enjoy the park sooner.” The planners said a community workshop will likely be scheduled at Portuguese Hall by early summer to receive public input on the pocket park development project.

Pocket park Planning board members Don Sevrens and Jon Linney discussed a recent successful cleanup of a city-owned parcel on Canon Street that the two planners are campaigning to have upgraded to a pocket park. “What is happening now is that we need to find a nonprofit sponsor,” said Linney. Neighbor Mary Harter, while hailing the spirit of the clean-up, pointed out gravel was removed from the site, complaining that will add to “blowing dust” in the area. Noting that it is a major neighborhood concern, she reiterated her fears
Impact report Dick also asked for, and received, permission from the planning board to have a letter drafted and sent to the school district pointing out perceived inadequacies with a recently released draft environmental impact report for a new proposed $10 million lighted four-field sports complex at Correia Middle School serving boys and girls sports. Pointing out the project is planned to have 90-foot-high banks of lights, Dick argued that the report “glosses over” serious impacts from possible spillover light pollution. “This and other issues are simply dismissed in the (report),” Dick said.
OBITUARY Ronald Nech, 69, former Newport Hotel manager Ronald Nech, longtime resident of Ocean Beach, rock tour staple and former manager of the Newport Hotel, died Jan. 8 of heart failure. He was 69. Originally from Youngstown, Ohio, Nech and his wife Connie moved to California in 1975, settling in Ocean Beach. Nech worked at Newport Farms Market in Ocean Beach and as a roadie for a “Jesus Christ Superstar” tour and many other rock bands. His avocation involved refurbishing
bicycles for children and friends in the community. Nech is survived by Connie, his wife of 43 years; son Josua; brother David; and sister Bonnie D'Apruzzo. A memorial celebration will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Plaza at the foot of Newport Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Concetta P. The Wine Pub honors Peninsulans for community service Man receives 38 years for BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON As part of its fifth anniversary celebration late last year, Shelter Island's The Wine Pub saluted four community-nominated residents for growing and uniting the Peninsula neighborhood. Honorees included: James Earnest: A video production teacher and Ocean Beach lifeguard, he’s found a way to blend these passions by connecting his video students with internships at the San Diego Regional Lifeguard Academy at Miramar College and by creating training videos for the San Diego Fire/Rescue Department. Martha Phillips: She spearheads the Point Loma Summer Concert Series, which has produced concerts for thousands of residents, visitors and families. During the rest of the year, she develops experiential learning programs for teens, families and San Diego immigrants at Junior Achievement of San Diego. Matt Kalla: He sits on the board of the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association to help business owners learn, grow and unite. He’s been a State Farm team member for 24 years and loves helping people manage the risks of everyday life and realize their dreams. Kristin Garrett: She has been with the Community Health Improvement Partnership for 16 years and is currently the CEO. She feels everyone has a role in the health of the neighborhood and is passionate about bringing people together in her hometown. Wine Pub owner Sandy Hanshaw deserves credit for having survived as a small-business startup as well as surviving cancer. Hanshaw, wife of San Diego Bicycle Coalition executive director Andy Hanshaw, talked about a “defining moment”

in her life when she lost her job in hotel business sales during the Great Recession and had to seize the opportunity to pursue her dream career goal. “I had an interest — and passion — for wine and at some point wanted to do something with that,” Hanshaw said. “There was a niche that wasn’t being met for a wine bar in this area, and we picked up on that.” The Wine Pub, at 2907 Shelter Island Drive, No. 108, is a full-on restaurantretail establishment, with dog-friendly outdoor patio dining. “It’s a good central location in a little strip shopping mall on the corner of Shelter Island Drive and Scott Street,” Hanshaw said, adding her eatery also serves local craft microbrews. Hanshaw explained her business model. “The idea was to create a place where you could get a nice glass of wine at a reasonable price,” she said, noting her clientele ranges from “couples and twentysomethings to 80-year-olds.” Hanshaw’s been working on this year's
calendar, which she said will include special events like wine tastings or other community-oriented events. She said The Wine Pub also features prix fixe menu community “dinners” at which attendees all sit at one large communal table. “We’re hoping to have another of those in March,” she said. The Wine Pub also hosts a “Bike for Boobs” event, benefiting cancer research. “It’s a cycling event where people ride around Shelter Island,” Hanshaw said. “[In 2014], we raised $9,000 for breast cancer research.” Hanshaw said her own bout with the disease has changed her perspective on life. “Every day,” she said, “I’m so much more grateful than I was in the past. You truly appreciate the beauty that surrounds you and the people that you surround yourself with.” Asked if she has any plans to change anything she’s doing at The Wine Pub, she responded, “The core part of the business is the same as when we started five years ago, though we’re always tweaking and trying to invent new events and stuff.” Meanwhile, Wednesdays just became San Diego’s night to dine with dogs – and for a cause. The Wine Pub Point has announced its Woofer Wednesday, a weekly special in which 10 percent of the check of every person who dines in with a dog benefits the chosen organization. Each Wednesday, the venue will release a unique menu featuring three items suitable for both pups and their humans, available to all two- and four-legged guests. PETA, SeaWorld debate pros, cons of orca habitat expansion BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON Is SeaWorld’s plan to nearly double the size of its killer whale enclosure a step forward or a token response to negative feedback from the documentary “Blackfish,” which called the marine park’s business practices into question? That debate was rejoined Jan. 6, when SeaWorld representatives and animalrights activists from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) renewed their debate over the marine park’s “Blue World Project” at a meeting of the Mission Bay Park Committee in Mission Beach. Announced last year, the project is a master-planned expansion of the park’s killer whale environment. “We’re going to replace the existing pool in the same place, making it 50 feet deep and 350 feet across,” said SeaWorld spokesman Jerry Howes about the park’s expansion plans to reconfigure the orca habitat by 2018. Details on the project, an informational item only before the park committee, will be presented to the California Coastal Commission for review later this year. Animal-rights activists view SeaWorld’s expansion plans as a negative. “This is clearly a drop in the bucket, a desperate maneuver by SeaWorld to turn back the hands of time when people are learning about the suffering that these orcas go through in captivity,” said PETA campaigner and spokesman Matt Bruce during broadcast interviews prior to the committee hearing. “It is fluff for visitors and does nothing for the orcas who are still confined to small, barren concrete tanks that they have to swim in in circles with chemical-

ly treated water. Even if you make the prison bigger, it’s still a prison,” he added. A handful of PETA protestors stood outside and inside the Santa Clara Recreation Center, where the park committee meeting was held, holding signs protesting orcas being held in captivity, which activists contend is a “failed business model.” “We’re kind of changing our business model right now, building twice as big a habitat for the killer whales, making sure they continue to stay happy, breed and their numbers grow,” said Mike Scarpuzzi, SeaWorld’s vice president of zoological operations, who defended SeaWorld’s expansion plans as “the best thing for the animals.” Scarpuzzi characterized PETA opposition as “radicals with an extreme point of view that we don’t accept.” Asked about the timing of the orca habitat expansion, coming in the wake of public blowback from “Blackfish” and declining profits from SeaWorld’s three U.S. marine parks, Scarpuzzi said it was “more coincidental than anything. “I’ve been here almost 40 years, and there’s always ebbs and flows in any business,” he said. “There’s no doubt in my mind that SeaWorld is going to be strong and we’re going to continue.” Scarpuzzi added this is the fourth planned expansion of SeaWorld’s orca habitat. He pointed out development of large-scale projects like Blue Ocean “take
time,” adding that “we’ve been talking about this expansion for many years.” PETA has challenged the ethics of keeping killer whales captive and profiting from their alleged commercial exploitation in public shows, brought to a flashpoint by the critical documentary “Blackfish.” Bruce noted killer whales dive up to 1,000 feet deep in the wild and swim up to 100 miles a day. “They would have to swim 1,500 laps in their expanded tanks to approximate what they would swim in the wild,” Bruce said. “So this isn’t anything to do with making lives better for these animals.” Scarpuzzi added SeaWorld is now into its fourth generation of orcas bred in captivity in the park, noting the most recent baby was born just 32 days ago. “Killer whales don’t breed if they’re unhappy,” Scarpuzzi contended. “These animals were born and raised here, and now they have their families here.” Asked his impression of “Blackfish,” Scarpuzzi described it as “one truth… Yes, somebody died, but all the rest… is a lot misrepresentations and, frankly, a lot of lies.” Scarpuzzi said the marine park’s main concern is “about our animals and giving them the best environment we possibly can.” Bruce attacked the Blue World Project, labeling it as “unnatural” and not in the best interest of killer whales. “If SeaWorld is really interested in changing their image and doing the right thing by these animals, they would release them to seaside sanctuaries, where they can feel the ocean surround them and where they can maybe one day swim free,” Bruce said.
hold-ups in Pacific Beach A robber whose ex-girlfriend turned him in for hold-ups and burglaries in La Jolla and Pacific Beach was sentenced Jan. 14 to 38 years in state prison. Attorney Raymond Aragon, who represents David Allen Grub, 45, urged San Diego Superior Court Judge Melinda Lasater for a lesser sentence of 24 years, saying, “He’s never been in state prison before.” Deputy District Attorney Dennis Panish said Grub will have to serve 85 percent of his sentence, or 32 years, before he can be paroled. Lasater ordered Grub to pay $445,000 to the victims, mostly for missing jewelry taken in daring daytime robberies in people’s homes in La Jolla and Rancho Santa Fe. She gave him credit for 787 days in jail and fined him $10,000. Lasater ordered a 20-year sentence for use of a gun in an Aug. 1, 2012 robbery in which he discharged a rifle into asphalt, causing it to splinter and strike the throat of La Jolla homeowner Jay Hawley. Hawley said an ambulance took him to a hospital in which doctors “took out a piece of street from my neck” and used eight or nine stitches to close a wound near an eye. Grub was also convicted of robbing a real estate agent, Peggy Chodorow, who had just finished showing Hawley’s $7 million home to prospective buyers. Grub took furs, jewelry and other items
just as Hawley and his wife returned home and Grub fired warning shots into the pavement. “My client’s very remorseful,” said Aragon “He got involved with the wrong people.” Aragon added that Grub is not a career criminal and that Grub’s ex-girlfriend only wrote an incriminating letter because “he took up with another woman.” “I just want to say I’m sorry,” Grub told Lasater. “I do understand how meth (use) can…cause very bad things,” said the judge. “I do think his remorse is sincere.” The crimes were unsolved until Grub's ex-girlfriend left an anonymous note in the Alpine sheriff ’s station on Feb. 21, 2013 that listed the crimes, Grub’s name, his Alpine address and his car license plate number. Sheriff ’s detective Karen Bloch testified the ex-girlfriend wrote the letter because Grub had bragged about some of the crimes. Sheriff ’s deputies searched Grub's home on Feb. 28, 2013, and found stolen property that included a purse taken in a Rancho Santa Fe home invasion robbery. Grub, an electrician, was arrested. A jury found Grub guilty of all charges Oct. 21, 2014 following five hours of deliberations in a trial that began on Oct. 9. – Neal Putnam-
San Diego Council OKs permit fee among medical marijuna regs San Diego City Council voted 8-1 Jan. 20 in favor of a package of amendments to medical marijuana regulations that, among other things, establishes a minimum fee of nearly $1,100 for annual operating permits. The amendments pertain to an ordinance that sets the terms under which dispensaries will conduct their business. The operating regulations differ from land-use restrictions, which determine the allowable locations for pot shops. Council wants the annual permit fee to equal the cost of inspections and other expenses needed to regulate the dispensaries. The city’s projected costs include the use of police officers to make background checks, fire personnel, zoning investigators, planners and City Treasury employees. Dan Normandin, of the city’s Devel-
opment Services Department, said the permit fee presented to the council was the smallest for a dispensary. Larger shops, with more employees and greater floor space, will face higher permit costs, he said. Prospective owners of the medical marijuana facilities are currently going through a process to acquire another type of permit — a conditional use permit — that will allow them to open. No legal dispensaries have opened within city limits. The application for the closest facility was submitted by a San Diego State University professor who wants to set up an establishment in Otay Mesa, near the Brown Field airport. Approval of his permit has been appealed. The city’s Planning Commission is scheduled to hold a hearing on the appeal Jan. 29.

Lifelong foodie is in her element at Northside Shack BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON Pamela Olvera’s been a mom, a paralegal, a chef, a gardener and now the owner of her own juice café in Point Loma. What will the owner of Northside Shack, at 1255 N. Rosecrans St., do for an encore? “There’s a couple of tricks up my sleeve,” said Olvera when asked if franchising is in her future. The 42-year-old entrepreneur and lifelong foodie said she’s been contemplating opening her own business for 20 years. She finally did it in May of last year after working for a couple of years on her business plan. “I’m totally different from most of the juice bars,” said Olvera. “I’m the only farm-to-table juice bar in town.” Northside Shack features a lot of chef ’s specials and custom drinks. “I have a build-your-own bar,” said Olvera. “You choose up to five items to create your very own blends.” Olvera said her vegetable and fruit blends are unique. “We don’t use any emulsifiers or additional sugars,” she said. “We don’t load up with ice. I put together something, and almost everybody walking out the door is a happy camper.” Her competitively priced concoctions are as distinctive as her business model. “Some of the combinations you won’t find anywhere else, like roasted sweet potato in a breakfast blend,” Olvera said. “I use coconut and almond milk. No soy. No dairy. Just total goodness.” One other novelty at Northside is that the café has Kombucha, a fermented tea drink purported to have health benefits, on tap.

The Kona Kai Resort may not be hosting many music-related events at the moment, but thanks to promoter Shawn Balch, their Sunday concert series, Live 'n' Local, continues to be one of the city’s best bets for catching topnotch acoustic performances. Held weekly from 4 to 7 p.m. at the venue, 1551 Shelter Island Drive, the event features up to six performers who play short sets, giving audiences a chance to take a wide variety of offerings in one afternoon. Mix in the spectacular views from the Kona Kai and happy hour food and drink prices, and it’s easy to see why the crowds keep coming. Balch considers the success of his shindigs to the fact that the audience and musicians are having a great time; “All of the artists are enjoying the show,” Balch said. He noted the concerts have a reach beyond the Kona Kai itself. “Some artists,” he said, “have big shows coming up or CDs being released, and I always tell them if they do, I'll get them a slot on my event to help promote it.”
Sunday, Jan. 25 has a terrific lineup, which includes country singer Sara Petite, indie rocker Rhythm Turner, balladeer Jeffrey Joe, singer-songwriter Greg Cyrus, Latin combo Cantua and newcomers Handmade Moments. As a bonus for the performers, Balch records the artist's set right off the board. To date, it’s been a single-microphone recording, but that changes this week. “I’m trying to add value to the performances for the artists,” Balch says, “so I’m moving to multitrack recording.” He admits all that extra work to document the sessions are “not monetarily worth it, so to speak, but being able to stage so many local artists is priceless. It’s wonderful to be able to document what’s going on in our scene right now.” He credits the Kona Kai staff for being a big part of the venue’s appeal. “I absolutely love all the staff,” he said. “They go out of their way to make people feel at home and truly enjoy the show.” For their part, musicians who have played the Local ‘n’ Live event sing its praises. “Performing at the Kona Kai was a blast,” said Kendrick Dial of award-winning hip-hop group Lyrical Groove. “We love to perform wherever there is good sound and inviting energy. The Kona Kai is right there on the water, so the scenery is beautiful, and it has great ambiance – which I kind of think makes all the people even more receptive to the performers, along with the drinks of course.” Dial notes that the Kona Kai crowd is a bit more receptive to performers than the typical venue that mixes food, drink and music. “Typically, in bar-type establishments, you have a myriad of folks who are there to mingle, look at the game or get drinks, and the music acts are just atmosphere. But at the Kona Kai, whenever we ended a song, we could hear the crowd cheer in a way that lets us know they actually listened to us. “This was the same for most of the performers as well. This could just be saying a lot about the performers, but it definitely speaks volumes for venue.” Show veteran Tim Flack points out that the outdoor setting and short set times present challenges in themselves. “The bar layout,” he said, “works really nice for playing, since the 'stage' is placed outdoors but within shot of the bar patrons. “Of course, the short sets are challenging from a performance perspective; just when you're getting comfortable and have the audience engaged, you're

packing it up. “But that's the nature of this type of gig, and [it] encourages you to hit the ground running from the first song.” Tunesmith Tad Ryan concurs. “In terms of the brief showcase, it takes you back to open mic roots,” he said. “I'm happy to be a part of the venture.” For singer Gayle Skidmore, part of the appeal is the camaraderie among the performers. “What I enjoyed most was getting to hear a few other San Diego songwriters that I wasn't yet familiar with,” she said. “The SD scene has grown a lot in the last few years, and it's awesome to be a part of events that showcase such great talent.” She also points out the challenges of playing a brief set. “Those are definitely very different from a normal show,” she said. “I find they require a lot more energy to engage the audience and to give a memorable performance.

Correia Middle School buries time capsule In 1983, the school once known as Collier made the drastic change to combine with neighboring school Dana to form the all new Correia Middle School. The school’s decision to change the name came in recognition of the bonding of the schools. It was decided to name the school after a living person. Being that the previous namesake was an important developer in San Diego, the choice to name the school after an artist specializing in the skill of glass blowing, Steven V. Correia, was a unique choice. The school has grown immensely since the name change. It receives input from Correia, and is ecstatic about being able to share with him the progress of the school. “Being able to meet the person the school is named after, the school I’ve worked so hard for, is amazing,” said eighth grader Jacob Wade. “In 2013, I became a member of Correia’s own ASB. There, I became a student intrigued with the school’s fascinating past. “While working in the nooks and crannies of back rooms I discovered the 1984 yearbook, which started my fascination with the school’s history. I’ve found almost 100 artifacts from the school and have organized

Don't look now (unless you somehow find yourself duly compelled), but I’m off to France for most of July to help recast a big farmhouse outside Bordeaux into a bigger live-in education and community center. The project is in the southwest commune of Brossac, and this is great for two reasons: I'll get a hard-won taste of true rural life (Brossac, a farming town, holds just over 500), and my workmates come from around the world, which means I'll be that much less conspicuous amid my totally suckworthy French. Tiny, windswept Brossac is a cultural solar system away from Paris, the Western world's premiere historical landmark – but even as six months will have passed, both locales will operate in lockstep following the horrific Jan. 7 massacre of 17 innocents and the police killings of three perpetrators of the crimes. What began as a mass murder at a controversial Paris newspaper morphed into the latest installment in religious fervor gone mad, with satirical cartoons of Islam’s prophet Mohammed fueling two battles of almost Shakespearean proportions. Nearly 90,000 French forces were involved in the aftermath, with French Prime Minister Manuel Valls declaring Jan. 10 that France is at “war” with radical Islam. Charlie Hebdo (“Charlie Weekly”), the paper at the center of the tragedies, normally circulates 60,000 copies every Wednesday. This week’s edition was to have rolled out at an unbelievable 5 million, a figure underscored by the nearly 4 million (about a third of Paris’ metropolitan population) who on Jan. 11 swelled the country’s streets in defiant, jubilant defense of freedom of expression the world over. In the blink of an adoring public eye, France’s 9/11 had morphed into a political Woodstock. The upshot from the bloodshed wasn’t lost on San Diego, whose House of France in Balboa Park was the scene of a hastily arranged candlelight vigil on Jan. 8. On the day of the Paris rally, about 125 showed their solidarity at the park – and perhaps no presence was more reassuring than that of Taha Hassane, director and imam at the Islamic Center of San Diego, who participated in both rallies. “I’m against injustice,” he said in a published report. “I’m against crimes committed in the name of my faith, in the name of the God that I worship, in the name of the prophet that I follow. Extrem-
ism and terrorism have no religion, no culture except the culture of hate.” French President François Hollande isn’t highly thought of by his people, but it’s a cinch he carried himself every inch the statesman Jan. 11, when he declared that “Today, Paris is capital of the world.” And so it has been for centuries as the signature city of about 40 peace treaties since 1229. By contrast, little Brossac became a commune in 1793 and has never had more than 1,200 residents at one time. But this is one of those cases where size, thankfully, doesn’t matter. Paris, Brossac and every French city in between stand shoulder to shoulder as this moment’s true leaders of the free world. Just as I’m elated at their courage, I am sorely shaken amid my own devastation at the attack on a free press and the loss of life. I am rapt with anticipation of my trip and my hosts’ colossal resolve, writ bold and extra-large Jan. 11 on the world stage. And even as my French is well-near hopeless, I am beside myself with pride for a nation that fuels mankind with its almost unimaginable presence, dispensing hope and humanity as freely as an impoverished world can scare draw its sustenance. modern interpretation of an historic event quite moving to all who participate, according to event producer Chuck Ross of Fiesta de Reyes. The event in the central plaza of Old Town San Diego State Historic Park will have activities for adults, children and their pets. The pet expo will have pet treats for tasting, adoption opportunities from various rescue groups and educational information on rescuing, rehabilitation and supporting the animals in your area. A pet costume contest will take
place at 2:30 p.m. featuring prizes for several categories including best dressed and best pet-owner look alike. Participating exhibitors, lined up by press time, were Chihuahua Rescue of San Diego, Dogs on Deployment, Emergency Animal Rescue, Helen Woodward Animal Center, Parrot Education and Adoption Center, Paws Into Grace Animal Hospice, Pridey Girl Petcare, Rancho Coastal Humane Society, San Diego Happy Dogs and Sky Hunters. Chopper the Biker Dog will be on hand to entertain the
crowd. Sponsored by Fiesta de Reyes, the Blessing of the Animals event invites people and animals of all faiths and convictions to participate. Last year’s event attracted more than 500 attendees was the highest attendance recorded in the modern event’s five-year history. From a blue tonged lizard to a wolf hybrid dog, all animals were blessed by Monsignor Mark Campbell. Admission to this event is free. For more information, call 619-2973100.
