Trial under way in Pacific Beach robbery case, La Jolla assault Opening statements and testimony began Oct. 14 in the trial of a man whose ex-girlfriend wrote an incriminating letter to the sheriff ’s department detailing the man’s crimes, including allegations he accosted a La Jolla realestate agent and pulled off a Pacif-

ic Beach burglary. The jury and alternates in the trial of David Allen Grub were sworn in by San Diego Superior Court Judge Melinda Lasater. The courts were closed Oct. 13 in observance of Columbus Day. Grub is charged and linked to

four burglaries and three robberies. He has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody on $450,000 bail. A mysterious letter was found at the sheriff ’s station in Alpine that named Grub, 45, as responsible for various crimes, but initially

the writer’s identity was unknown. Grub lived in Alpine at the time, and a search of his residence and car turned up stolen property in several cases. A sheriff ’s detective is expected to testify that the writer was Grub’s ex-girlfriend, who told the

North PB hat sale a heady idea to raise money for elementary school By DAVE SCHWAB Two months after the second annual North PB Sip ’N’ Stroll business street fair, the beach community continues to benefit as proceeds from the sale of event hats continues as a fundraiser for Pacific Beach Elementary School. Demand for trademark hats sold at the Sip ’N’ Stroll was so great that a second batch is now for sale through at least the end of the year, with half the proceeds benefiting Friends of Pacific Beach Elementary. The nonprofit is responsible for funding most of the school’s non-district-funded activities and programs. “We did 200 hats selling for $10 at the stroll and we sold out,” said Mike Spangler of Spangler Event Productions Inc., who masterminded the Sip ’N’ Stroll as a way to help local merchants while distinguishing North Pacific Beach from the rest of the community. “My daughter is now going to PB Elementary, and they have a great [activist] group which raised almost $100,000 that went to art, music and Spanish at the school.” Ever since the Stroll in August, Spangler said he’s been getting “an email a day from people saying they want more hats. “So I decided to turn it into a school fundraiser,” said Spangler, noting he’s turned out another 300 Sip ‘N’ Stroll hats that, when sold at $20 apiece with $10 going back to the school, will generate $3,000 to help schoolchildren. “I’ve already sold 50 hats,” Spangler said just a couple days

QUICKHITS >> DIVER’S BODY PULLED FROM MISSION BAY

Lifeguard rescue divers retrieved the body of a diver who drowned in Mission Bay in an apparent diving accident earlier this month. According to Capt. Joseph Amador of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, the diver was whisked to UCSD for medical treatment but was pronounced dead shortly after 8 p.m. on Oct. 1. The victim was plucked from the water without a pulse and did not respond to rescuers’ attempts at cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Amador said. Earlier that day, lifeguard officials received a distress call from a vessel on Mission Bay reporting a diver struggling in the water. Lifeguards arrived at the Mission Bay Channel, just south of Mission Point parking lot, to find the diver had already sunk below the surface. Rescuers entered the water, stripped the victim’s weight belt and brought him to the surface, where attempts to bring him into the lifeguard vessel proved difficult because of the victim’s weight and equipment, Amador said. Witnesses said the victim had likely been submerged in his struggle for four to six minutes before the arrival of lifeguards.

Social-media site Nextdoor.com helps track down suspect in unprovoked panhandler attack By NICOLE SOURS LARSON

While most panhandlers appear harmless, I learned a painful lesson recently how some can be violent. The attack came out of nowhere, totally unprovoked, just as the thunderstorm hit Pacific Beach at 5:45 p.m. on Sept. 16. My husband and I sat in our Mustang, the first car in the inside lane, waiting for a green light to turn from Garnet Avenue onto East Mission Bay Drive toward the I-5. I had noticed a panhandler cavorting on the median trying to attract attention while holding a sign and flyers. He wore a gray Tshirt with a message in red, saying, “I haven’t won my first million yet, but ask me how!” He looked to be about 5-feet 7-inches, lean and wiry, in his 40s or 50s, with gingercolored, curly hair and beard. I had ignored him, refusing to make eye contact. As the light was about to change, I saw him kneeling by my front left tire, jabbing at it and sticking his sign into the tire well. He walked away as the light changed and the skies opened. After clearing the intersection, I stopped to look if I were dragging the sign. A woman in the car in the next lane

called over and recommended I check my tire, since she’d seen the guy stabbing it. I made a U-turn, stopped in a parking lot and discovered my pancaked tire, which my husband changed in the rain. With all the storm-ignited chaos in the city that day, I couldn’t get through to the police, finally filing a police report online the following day. Determined to warn fellow residents so the same thing wouldn’t happen to them, I posted an account on our online bulletin board, Nextdoor.com. That’s what ultimately solved the crime. TV Ch. 10 news reporter Dan Haggerty, a Pacific Beach resident, saw my post and contacted me. We did an interview that ran on KGTV. After I left the interview at the station, Haggerty and videographer Alex Gray spotted the panhandler matching my description and shot photos and video. Haggerty sent me pictures, from which I was able to identify the attacker. I passed them along to the police. Pacific Beach Town Council president Alan Harris also recognized the panhandler from my

than three months, she’s continuing the quest and remains hopeful of ultimate success. “Carly’s been seen twice in Pacific Beach within the last two weeks,” said Rasmussen. “We know she’s still around here and that she is still fine.” Rasmussen said the social networking ties she’s established on NextDoor have established 17 confirmed “spottings” of Carly in and around Pacific Beach since the bird disappeared. The parrot was seen Aug. 1 at Tourmaline Beach in PB. Rasmussen said Carly Lu was last seen at Bella Pacific Condos in the hills surrounding the InN-Out Burger near Interstate 5. “She’s in the Loring Street corridor from the beach to the freeway,” said Rasmussen, who said she’s been “plastering posters all over town” ever since with renewed confidence that Carly Lu may yet prove retrievable. Pigeon-size Carly Lu is distinguishable — particularly by her bright red tail. Her call is also distinctive, with its repertoire of whistles, beeps and electronic sounds. Diego and Beyond where people can post about lost and found pets. “That’s probably a good place to start,” Rasmussen said, adding Nextdoor.com’s website version has a Lost & Found section that’s usually mostly pets. “I know people have found them (pets) through that,” she said. A perusal of Nextdoor’s neighborhood information-sharing website on nearly any given day reveals a host of missing dogs,

cats, cockatiels — even tortoises. Here is a list of lost pets listed recently in Nextdoor.com’s Crown Point North Lost & Found section: • “My daughter’s blue-andwhite parakeet got out of the house. She is devastated. Call (858) 274-4072.” • “Found cat. So sweet. Sarah Rossetto from P.B. Southwest Central.” • “Found dog. Burak Dogan from Mission Bay.”

crimes and help catch criminals. And how about dealing with panhandlers? “The best way to deal with them is to tell them or gesture no. Ignoring them also works. [If] they get aggressive or violent, call the police,” said Northern Division Capt. Jerry Hara.

Many of the stories on the site result in happy endings. Fido the dog or Felix the cat is often found. Such in the case with Sharon Wampler of Bird Rock, whose missing cat was successfully retrieved through social media. “Thanks to the Bird Rock Community Council’s (BRCC’s) e-blast, our missing 19-year-old cat, Rizelle, was returned recently,” Wampler said. “Apparently, she spent four nights with a family eating salmon and keeping their brown lab[rador] company, feeling right at home. Wampler said the outpouring of supportive emails she received about her lost cat “was astounding.” “We are grateful for the kindness of so many thoughtful and caring neighbors,” Wampler said. One Pacific Beach resident, Jonathan West of PB North Shore Highlands, went so far on Nextdoor.com as to find himself involved in a “shared conversation” with a number of neighbors

West said he found this “little message” on his doorstep: “I am a cat, somewhat of an unleashed hairball with an attitude, and I have something to share with all you argumentative human types who have decided to text about we cats on your special little social community website. “I roam through your neighborhoods, catching rats, chasing birds away … and now and again making myself available for petting and strange conversations aimed at us, which we don’t really understand. But through it all, we do somehow manage to put up with you humans and I am really quite appalled to find that some of you don’t actually find us to be absolutely adorable … I certainly hope that the rest of you will straighten out those confused souls who have this most unfortunate problem. And that’s about all I’m going to say right now. I’ve got to get back to being the sort of cat that won’t take the time to tell you like it is, because we normally feel you should all understand things like this without any of us having to spell it out for you. “I just have one final word, and I hope you will take it very, very seriously, for all the complex ramifications that it intends to communicate. That word is simply: ‘Meow!’”

However, other factors, including a significant decline in ground water reserves throughout California, a drop in water reservoirs for the San Diego region, a lack of rainfall and diminished prospects for a strong El Niño and a severe heat wave for the San Diego region in August and September, led Faulconer to call for the secondphase status. Under the new guidelines, the voluntary measures in effect since July will become mandatory. They also call for the additional measures, pending council approval, to go into effect Nov. 1, to wit: • Watering and landscape irrigation using sprinklers will be limited to no more than three days a week on a schedule established and posted by the city. • Watering will be allowed at residences with odd-numbered addresses on Sundays, Tuesdays

About 10 staff members in the Public Utilities Department will be tasked with enforcement, which largely calls for educating the public and working with residents and businesses to comply. The city will shift responsibilities for some workers and fill existing budgeted vacancies to ensure proper and adequate enforcement.

Lifeguards of the Year leave legacy during Mission Beach in ceremony

Daryl McDonald and Tore Blichfeldt were honored as San Diego City Lifeguards of the Year on Sept. 27 at the Swell Café in Mission Beach. District 2 City Councilman Ed Harris, himself a veteran lifeguard, and John Vallas, founder of Swell Café, presented the awards. McDonald, who received the Year-Round Lifeguard of the Year honors, is retiring after 28 years of service. He has served on the shores of Mission Beach, Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach, as well as the city’s boating waterways. “To end my career with this reward is just fantastic,” McDonald said. “I have a passion for helping people and I’m just happy to

Hara said a team of three officers was dispatched Oct. 9 to do a transient sweep in Pacific Beach, which culminated in six misdemeanor arrests. “One misdemeanor arrest for illegal lodging was a business complaint at 2830 Garnet Ave. in an industrial complex recently renovated to invite new businesses,” Hara said. “We received a letter of agency (permission to access private property) because of a growing problem of transients overrunning the property. The owners were very appreciative of the quick police response.” Hara said four other misdemeanor arrests were issued during that sweep for illegal lodging/trespassing/violations of court

orders and possession of drug paraphernalia at the Pacific Beach Methodist Church at 1561 Thomas Ave. “There was one other misdemeanor arrest of a 17-year-old girl for daytime loitering and resisting police during selective enforcement of a canyon area involved with illegal lodging and drug activity,” Hara said. “Officers located a male and female off Pocahontas and Ogalala avenues. When the subjects saw us, they fled up the canyon. We captured the girl, but the male fled.” Hara said the girl turned out to be a methamphetamine user meeting her juvenile boyfriend in the canyon for possible drug-related activity. “Her parents were notified and she was returned home,” Hara said. Teran said she understands the magnitude of trying to police transients in public places. “The growing problem with homelessness at the Pacific Beach library park and elsewhere cannot be solely managed by police,” Teran said. “A policing strategy has been used to attempt to control bad behavior on Garnet, and it’s like herding cats. The police are doing the best they can, but it is not up to them to solve this library problem.” Michelle Clark, the youth services

The surrounding neighbors of Cass, Reed, Thomas and Dawes streets over the last few years have called the police non-emergency line almost on a daily basis due to drug dealing.” Another Pacific Beach resident, David Thomas, who lives a couple of blocks from the library and its park, agreed the time may have come to address the homeless issue more intensely. “While I understand a sizable number of homeless people have no other options as far as living conditions at the moment, I’m rather surprised they are allowed to congregate on the library grounds (grass and sidewalk) areas, especially across the street from a daycare with little kids,” Thomas said. “While I’m sure the majority of homeless on the library grounds are harmless, it doesn’t exactly paint a rosy picture of Pacific Beach when residents and visitors show up at

But they can’t be covered up; no sleeping bags or tents. There’s no camping. That’s against our policy.” Asked whether the library grounds was an attractive nuisance for transients, Clark replied, “Sure, it’s a great place to be with the beautiful park, whether the people are homeless or not.” Clark said the library does have a security guard who patrols, adding the facility is open varying hours every day but Sunday. Teran said she is convinced there isn’t one solution for homelessness at the Pacific Beach library, park

and elsewhere. “We have to look at this problem from many angles,” she said, adding a recent meeting was held involving neighbors, the library’s manager and her supervisor, police representatives, the neighborhood prosecutor and the District 2 City Council’s office. “The purpose of the meeting was to gather ideas and look at shortand long-term solutions,” Teran said. “We are looking at lighting, sprinkler timing and changing the landscaping, even having exercise classes out on the lawn at certain times of the day, The library and its park have a great potential to create a sense of community. Dining Swell Cafe brews up stunning makeover By PATRICIA WALSH John Vallas has been brewing up success in Mission Beach since 2011. That’s when the submariner-turned-entrepreneur bought a coffee shop down to its last drop and transformed it into the tidal Swell Café, a laid-back, eco-friendly, Fair Trade java joint serving up an eclectic health-conscious breakfast and lunch menu in an open-air setting. On Sept. 27, the business perked up again with a grand reopening that showcased a remodel, a new partnership with Gina Champion-Cain and the Patio Restaurant Group (PRG) and an expansion into the coffeeroasting business. Now roasting in small batches at the café, the Swell Coffee Roasting Company will soon open at a larger facility. Swell provides signature coffee blends to wholesale and retail customers and to all of the PRG brands: The Patio restaurants in Pacific Beach and Mission Hills and The Front Porch, a culinary boutique recently opened in Mission Hills. Vallas calls his approach to coffee a “seed-to-cup” endeavor that’s sustainable and traceable. He said he’s currently working with a farm in Peru. “By doing what we’re doing — spending a lot of time sourcing coffee from farmers and serving

It’s all happening at SeaWorld’s “Halloween Spooktacular,” where Halloween meets the sea. Also, kids can visit the park for free in October with the purchase of a full-price adult admission.
