life’s challenges Local sailor overcomes hardship on road to Rio’s 2016 Paralympics By KENDRA HARTMANN

f there’s anyone that knows what it feels like when life throws you a curveball, it’s Ryan Porteous. He is also familiar with how it feels to bounce back. Though he suffers from a spinal-cord injury, the Crown Point resident recently qualified for the U.S. Sailing Team with dreams of becoming a Paralympic athlete. Porteous graduated from Mission Bay High School in 2011, second in his class and designated Male Athlete of the Year. It was just weeks into his freshman year at UC Santa Barbara, where he had planned to pursue a degree in physics, that the unthinkable happened. Porteous slipped on a dock, hitting his head on the edge of it and breaking his neck. At 18, he found himself partially paralyzed from the neck down. Rehabilitation efforts have restored some of Porteous’ movement. He can walk short distances with a walker and

has nearly full use of his upper body. Still, for a former outside linebacker/strong safety whose high school football team won the CIF Div. IV championships in 2009 — not to mention his time spent on MBHS’ swim, basketball and surf teams — the incident was nothing short of life changing. Porteous’ entire family had been involved in sailing since he was a child. When he was 7 years old, he enrolled in the Mission Bay Yacht Club’s summer program, and was in his own boat by the time he was 8. He competed in local regattas through middle school before he got involved in high school sports. His passion for athletics wasn’t diminished after his injury. The incident, in fact, somewhat unexpectedly led him back to a focus on sailing. “The first time I went sailing [after my injury] was on my dad’s boat,” he said. “It felt great to get back on the water, and

Golfing ladies celebrate 50 years at Mission Bay A man is to thank for the birth of the 50-year-old Mission Bay Women’s Golf Club (MBWGC). “It was a nine-hole course at that time and we started out as a foursome that had been taking golf lessons there from a golf pro from the YWCA and the owner, Jim Moeller, asked us if we wanted to start a ladies club. None of us thought it would ever happen,” said 95-year-old MBWGC charter member Lee Baebler. “But we were absolutely surprised by the end of the year that we had some 70 members,” Baebler continued. Fast-forward half a century and MBWGC, now 58 members strong, just celebrated its golden

That’s when I heard about Challenged America out of San Diego Bay.” Challenged America, conceived of in 1978 by two disabled veterans on Mission Bay, offers adaptive sailing programs to those with disabilities through boats designed with a fixed seat and specially made steering system. Apart from those minor differences, Porteous said, the sport is the same. “Everything technical is the same,” he said. “Some different equipment is the only change. They knew the sandwich chain from Arizona, where the two met, and they knew how good the food was. Part 1 The aromas of coffee and simmering onions waft through the structures of Byrd Camp, No More Death’s desert-aid home base: a half dozen trailers, open-sided cooking and dishwashing tents, a canvas covered medical tent, an eating area with long picnic tables. Murmurings in Spanish and English intermingle with soft laughter or dusty coughs from volunteers’ numerous fabric tents on the periphery of the camp. The vast stretches of hills and mountains of the Sonoran Desert in Arizona are radiantly green and deep red in the early morning light. No More Deaths, based in Tucson, Ariz., was formed in 2004 in response to the increased number of deaths near the U.S./Mexico border due to border policies (and physical barriers) that direct migrants away from urban centers like San Diego and into sparsely populated and treacherous terrain like the Sonoran Desert in Arizona. The nonprofit relies on volunteers to provide direct aid in the form of food, water and medical assistance to migrants crossing through the desert. No More Deaths is also committed to raising consciousness about the militarization of the border (especially

in Arizona), addressing current immigration reform legislation, recording abuses by the U.S. Border Patrol and bringing awareness to the links between border policy and the prison industrial complex. After a breakfast of scrambled eggs with peppers and onions scooped into tortillas and washed down with ground-rich coffee, we will be ready to hike, navigate and bushwhack through the moun-

tains and valleys of the desert as we drop off water jugs, food and socks along the trails for as long as daylight allows. Some volunteers stay for a week, thrashing through the brush, some a month or more during the dangerous summer heat. Some volunteers do this work year round. The work,

wright, a PB resident. “I love my local branch, but there’s just some things you’re not going to find here that you’ll find at the central library, which is a much larger facility with specialized librarians in various departments.” Pointing out the new central library has “fiscal resources available that we just don’t have,” Wainwright said branches and the central library actually complement and accentuate one other. “We don’t look at it as competition but as support that people in the San Diego region can really take advantage of,” she said, adding the new central library is heightening public awareness about all the educational resources — many of them free — that are available to them throughout the library system. “A lot of people I’ve heard from are going to be visiting the downtown library for the first time in a long time,” Wainwright said, adding people getting excited about the new central library is not just good for downtown, but is “helping people get excited about libraries all over, and helping us in

Pacific Beach, as well.” At the Sept. 28 dedication, head librarian Barrow said the facility was “30 years in the making” and “a dream come true.” The new facility replaces the former library at 820 E. St., which was built 57 years ago to serve about 15,000 patrons when the city’s population was less than 500,000. Today, the city’s population is 1.25 million and more than 480,000 people use the central library alone. Barrow said there’s something for everyone at the new library, whether it’s the children’s library with its Dr. Seuss mural, the beach-themed teen center designed for and by teens, the expansive special-event room or the “beautiful and quiet” library reading room under the landmark latticed dome. “The San Diego Central Library is poised to nourish hungry minds, connect people to one another and provide a wealth of knowledge,” she said Barrow. “This new library is exactly what San Diego needs.” For the full story, visit www.sdnews.com.

A Pacific Beach man will get a trial date set on Nov. 4 on federal charges he made false statements in getting three passports in Europe under the identities of deceased children from the 1950s. Lloyd Irvin Taylor, 70, is a former certified public accountant. He was arrested April 5 following a grand jury indictment. The U.S. government has seized approximately $1.8 million in gold from his assets in offshore bank accounts to determine if the assets came from criminal activity. Taylor has a colorful history, including an unsuccessful run for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1975 and held a Bar Association license as an attorney until 1988, according to court records. Taylor is alleged to have used the identities of six children who died in the San Francisco Bay area in the early 1950s. He apparently used public records to research them, and discovered they did not have Social Security numbers before their deaths. The charges allege Taylor showed up at the U.S. Embassy in Budapest, Hungary on July 7, 2003 and claimed the identity of one of the deceased children. He got a passport in that name. Taylor also appeared at the U.S. Embassy in Vienna, Austria, several months later. He wrote that his passport “was in the hip pocket of my pants when the pants were washed in the washing machine.” He allegedly presented identification of another deceased child and got a passport. Taylor allegedly did the same thing in another child’s name on April 23, 2004 at the U.S. Embassy in Berlin, Germany. The U.S. Attorney says Taylor used false passports to travel to Switzerland, Costa Rica, Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom. Because of the alleged identity theft, a U.S. District Court magistrate judge ordered Taylor to be detained without bail in the Metropolitan Correctional Center. He has pleaded not guilty. — Neal Putnam

A Paralympicclass boat, the SKUD 18 is a twoperson boat designed for disabled sailors with two fixed seats on the centerline of the boat that tilt side to side so the sailors remain level when the boat heels. Though Walker is fairly new to sailing, she and Porteous hit it off as teammates immediately. They decided to enter the C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Memorial Regatta in Newport, R.I. in June as Team Porteous/Walker. The race served as the qualifying event for the U.S. Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider, and Team Porteous/Walker, formed just one month before by teammates living on opposite coasts, took first place and secured its position on the national team. The win, Porteous said, has given him and Walker the opportunity to travel and compete in national and international regattas. In August, they competed in the International Association of Disabled Sailing’s World Championship regatta in Ireland, coming in fourth place against teams from across the world. “We did pretty good. We’re happy with the result,” Porteous said. “We haven’t sailed this boat very much and we’re a pretty new team, but we felt like we did pretty good, all things considered. It was good to see where we stacked up.”

Finding out where they stack up is important for Porteous and Walker. Their goal, after all, is not only to make it to the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, but to bring home a medal for the U.S. Though they’re currently the No. 1 team in the country, they’ll have to continue to work hard to stay on top and give the rest of the world’s teams a run for their money. “It’s hard to tell exactly who our competition is right now, but definitely the British, Australian and New Zealand teams are very good,” Porteous said. “And there are good teams here in the States, too. There’s definitely a high level of competition. We’ve got our work cut out for us.” To reach their goal, Porteous and Walker are racing in as many regattas as they can. Their next big race will be the International Sail-

ing Federation’s World Cup in Miami in January, where the top Paralympic- and Olympic-class boats will compete. Apart from more training, Porteous said he and Walker are hoping to get sponsorship to help them acquire the necessary equipment — namely, a newer, faster boat — that will take them the distance. Though membership on the U.S. Sailing Team gets them some funding, most of that goes toward travel expenses and regatta fees. And Porteous himself has other expenses — he has returned to school, taking general education classes at Mira Costa Community College, with plans to return to UCSB in 2014 to finish his degree in physics. His injury has proven to represent a detour, rather than a complete roadblock, and sailing, he said, has been a defining factor in the challenge to not letting himself be dragged down. “It has been huge, just awesome, that I can still do sailing,” Porteous said. “It has helped me deal with everything and stay positive. I just want to focus on what I can still do, not what I can’t do. “I want to continue sailing my whole life. It’s really one of those sports everyone can do, and we see younger kids and older guys all racing. The Mission Bay High School Alumni Association (MBHSAA) is hosting the seventh annual All Alumni Homecoming Celebration on Friday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. The event is free with paid admission to the game and is open to all MBHS alumni and staff. This will be the last homecoming on the existing MBHS football field as ground breaking for the new stadium is scheduled for the end of this year.

This year’s event will include VIP tents on the end zone of the field, $2 tacos generously donated by the PB Shore Club, BUC merchandise and prime endzone seating for the game. Talking with MBWGC members about their club’s uniqueness and why it has endured, one word kept cropping up. “It’s the camaraderie of the women,” said Doris Cronkhite, noting active members range from women in their 20s to their 90s. “I just love the camaraderie,” agreed 93-year-old club member Kay Robinson, who joined about 10 years ago. “The ladies, the location,” was longtime club member Shirley Goddard’s answer when asked what keeps her a MBWGC member. “We’re a very social group,” concluded club president Suzy Leif. “We have fun with each other. Rather than going out and playing cards with the boys, we come here and play a round.” “You’re away from the telephone, away from the dishes,” added Leif half-jokingly. “It beats mopping the floor,” concurred Cronkhite. Bonnie Cole, an MBWGC member for 23 years, said the course has a lot to do with why the club has flourished. “It’s a fun course to play because it’s not real long, you can play it in two hours,” Cole said, noting she

So I said, ‘I think I’ll try Mission Bay.’ I came and they welcomed me with open arms.” After the round of golf on Oct. 2, the 40 or so MBWGC members who turned out for the anniversary celebration met for lunch afterward at Sufi restaurant in Clairemont to relive old times and mark 50 years of companionship. Still going strong after five decades, club president Leif said the group is always looking for new members.

It’s safe to say there probably isn’t a more exciting band in San Diego than Lady Dottie & The Diamonds. Performing every Wednesday at Gallagher’s, the band excels at gritty R&B, with elements of funk and garage rock mixed in. The quintet plays a mix of great originals like “I Ain’t Mad At Ya,” which sounds just like the tunes of their musical heroes, authentically performed with real passion. “I realized times were changing and police have something more important to do,” he said. “I thought this theme would be something that could catch on, particularly around colleges, and I just wanted to create a place that would fun to work at and eat at.” Cheba Hut, which now has 16 locations in seven states, does not serve anything that contains marijuana. It sells no smoking paraphernalia, nor does it have any affiliations with marijuana dispensaries. The menu does, however, pay homage to that humble plant, with items like the “Kush” (your basic BLT), “Chronic” (barbecue roast beef) and “Humboldt” (guacamole veggie sandwich). All sandwiches come in three sizes: nug (4 inches), pinner (8 inches) and blunt (12 inches). The walls feature popular counter-culture décor, like Bob Marley posters and tie-dyed textiles. All that, Snyder and Robinson said, shouldn’t have

any bearing on where they’re allowed to run a store. “The food is what Cheba Hut is about,” Robinson said. “The sauces, which are our own proprietary recipe, are made fresh daily, and so is the bread. If people just come in here and taste the food, they’ll know what we’re about.” Jennings is upset about the property owners’ decision to shut out Cheba Hut. Ever since he started the chain, he said, he had hopes for a Pacific Beach location. “I always idolized the beach, and I would always go to San Diego in the summer,” Jennings said. “I think Pacific Beach has a really cool feel to it, and I have wanted to get a franchise there forever. [Ryan and Jordan] work hard, and they just want to put in a legitimate business. I think it’s a shame on the landlords to blacklist us. It’s not good for the entrepreneurial spirit.” Jennings said that, although he

experienced a little bit of resistance when he opened the chain, he has since not seen anything like what Snyder and Robinson are up against. “I had a liquor license denied once [in another location], but that was overturned by a judge due to a violation of First Amendment rights. I feel like this is discriminatory.” Snyder and Robinson have not given up on Pacific Beach as the newest home of Cheba Hut. “We’re still looking for other locations there,” Snyder said. “We are still really hopeful that we’ll be able to open up something in PB, because we know how much the community would love us once we’re there.” Jennings said he agreed the community would benefit from a sandwich shop like Cheba Hut, whose products, he said, are unlike anything currently in the community. “People want us there. We’re just a relaxed place where someone can get a sandwich and a beer. We understand the community’s problems with alcohol, but that’s not us at all,” he said. “We want to keep PB a unique community, and I think we should let the people of PB decide whether or not they want us, not one landlord. the people, the desert: it all draws you in and no matter how much shaking of the boots you do when you get back home, the grainy memories of the situation out here remains lodged in the soul. We congregate around the picnic tables and talk about the day’s tasks ahead. There will be three patrols: The first will do “drops,” spending much of the day in one of the burly trucks to navigate through washes and up and down rain-rutted hills. Gallon jugs of water will be positioned at way-

points usually less than a half-mile from the road — close enough for our convenience but far enough from the Border Patrol accessible roads to provide a modicum of safety for migrant travelers. Another team will go on a moderate seven-mile hike to drop water and food at more remote waypoints along a well-used migrant trail. The third team will be hiking all day over mountains and through canyons, looking for migrants that may have been left behind by their group due to injury or sickness. There will also be volunteers who will “hold down” camp and tend to those in the medical tent who may be suffering from scorpion stings,

severe dehydration, debilitating blisters, and/or exhaustion. The travelers will have a chance to rest and eat and drink before moving on the following day (or take more than a couple of days if their health is severely compromised). Moving on as quickly as possible is encouraged — though it rarely happens, camp is not immune to raids by Border Patrol. With helicopters and fighter jets screaming overhead and the threat of Border Patrol surveillance and possible apprehension of travelers on or near the property, the camp is constantly vacillating between feeling like a war zone and an invisible bubble of safety.
