Festival in PB celebrates Polish culture and cuisine By DAVE SCHWAB October wouldn't seem right without the annual Polish Festival in San Diego taking place Friday through Sunday, Oct. 7-9, at St. Maximilian Kolbe Roman Catholic Church at 1735 Grand Ave. in Pacific Beach. “This annual fundraising event is one of the most popular ethnic festivals in the Pacific Beach area, attracting people from all around San Diego as well as international visitors who want to get a taste of what Poland is all about,” said Kolbe spokeswoman Agnieszka Giacalone. “Delicious Polish food is definitely a must at the festival – pierogis (dumplings stuffed with sauerkraut or potato and cheese), Golabki (meat stuffed cabbage rolls), Bigos (Hunter’s stew), potato pancakes and famous grilled kielbasa (Polish sausage),” Giacalone said. “Polish pastries, soft drinks, coffee and tea will also be available.” The colorful Polish Festival is a tribute to Polish heritage, culture and cuisine. St. Maximilian was built in 1995 in Pacific Beach to serve the Polish community, a large number of whom who emigrated from their native land during the Solidarity labor-union movement of the 1990s.

POLISH FESTIVAL When: Friday through Sunday, Oct. 7-9. Where: St. Maximilian Kolbe Roman Catholic Church at 1735 Grand Ave. in Pacific Beach. Info: www.polishmission.org

The church is named for St. Maximilian Kolbe, a Franciscan friar and World War II-era hero who voluntarily sacrificed himself in the place of a stranger at the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp. Kolbe provided shelter to refugees from Greater Poland, including 2,000 Jews, whom he hid from Nazi persecution in his friary until he was arrested by the German Gestapo and imprisoned. While imprisoned, Kolbe volunteered to take the place of a man condemned to be starved to death. In his cell, Kolbe led men in songs and prayer. After three weeks of dehydration and starvation, only he and three others were still alive. He was murdered with an injection of carbolic acid. Adults over 21 years of age will have an opportunity to try Polish beer at the festival by well-known brands such as Okocim, Warka and Zywiec. Artistic entertainment will include Polish folk dance groups –

Polonez from San Diego and Krakusy from Los Angeles, 224 Kosciuszko Polka Band, Il Giardino d’Amore baroque chamber orchestra from Vienna, and many others. For those who want to learn more about the church and also join in prayer, Holy Mass and tours of the church will be offered. Veneration of the relics of St. John Paul II, St. Sister Faustina, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, St. Padre Pio and other saints will also be offered. All proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward supporting the Parish – the main goal being the continued renovation of St. Maximilian Kolbe Roman Catholic Church. Father Jerzy Frydrych of Saint Maximilian Maria Kolbe said the church’s primary mission is to “serve the needs of Polish people.” He noted part of that is having mass said in Polish, while adding there is also a Saturday service in English. Frydrych said funds raised from the annual festival “go to renovate the church,” pointing out improvements have included stained-glass windows and a new church sanctuary. Event admission is $5. Those under age 16 get in for free. For more information and details, visit www.polishmission.org/festival/index.php.

VOTED BEST CONTRACTOR IN LA JOLLA

Ask any coach what makes a team a winner and they will tell you it is when the players buy into what you’re saying. When it comes to the Mission Bay High field hockey team, head coach Kris Auer has a pair of players that have taken on leadership roles, helping the Bucs strive to be a competitive team on a regular basis. For seniors Kylie Kroeger and Emery Reyna, field hockey is a big part of their lives, something that is benefitting the team. Beach & Bay Press recently caught up with the duo for an email interview, looking at this season, the girls’ goals, and advice for potential upcoming players. BBP: What attracted you to field hockey at MBHS and what are your thoughts on how the team is doing so far this season? Kroeger: Being an avid soccer and lacrosse player, I hoped that field hockey would translate well with my athletic abilities when I started at MBHS. I fell in love with the sport and have enjoyed the strategy. Last year our team went to playoffs; this year we have high hopes to repeat! This is a young team, but the girls have stepped up, practiced hard and continue to gel as a team. Reyna: I was attracted to field hockey at Mission Bay because of the intensity and speed of the game, as well as the type of field hockey players you see on the field. It's an intense game with equally intense

Emery Reyna and Kylie Kroeger

people that really take you in and teach you what the sport is really about. This season is going well so far; all of our players are so talented at what they do. We have struggled at points, but in the end, we never stop playing what coach calls "beautiful hockey." BBP: How do you each see your roles on the team as leaders? Kroeger: Field hockey is unfortunately not a common sport for the West Coast. High school is typically the first time girls even pick up a stick and learn the rules. Experience allows me to help guide the rookies, whether it be through sportsmanship, helping to teach new moves, or just being someone to talk to about the added pressures of being a student athlete. Emery and I, as captains, try to be mentors on and off

the field. Reyna: Kylie and I have been friends for all of high school and have truly found out each other's strengths and weaknesses as leaders. Kylie is one of, if not the best, field hockey player on the team, and she really guides the team by being an example, and guiding us on how we can improve our game. I try to lead the team by bringing us closer together, connecting one-on-one with each player, and setting the example of perseverance by attending practice no matter what. We've had multiple practices where Kylie and I have wanted to opt out and go to the beach, but we both know that we are the ones our teammates look to when things get tough. It's been an amazing experience we've shared. BBP: How has the coaching staff helped you become better players? Kroeger: Throughout the year, coach Auer communicates with the team, whether it be about practices or upcoming clinics/camps. My freshman year, I had never played field hockey, but his enthusiasm for the game was what ignited my love for field hockey! Reyna: Coach Auer is an amazing coach, one like no other. Most coaches struggle to achieve a balance of respect and fondness. He demands respect and our effort, but he truly understands us and our priorities. READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com

Mission Bay teams ready for October league races By DAVE THOMAS With September in the books, a number of Mission Bay fall sports teams head into October looking to secure league victories. On the boys’ beach volleyball scene, the Bucs, under head coach Nikki Caufield, fell to second place in league play with a tough 2-1 loss to The Bishop’s School. "We had an injury that required us to re-shuffle our lineup at the last minute and it may have cost us the match,” Caufield stated. “We clearly had the stronger teams but really played down to our competition. Our first and secondranked team both lost close match-

es in three games so the entire match came down to one or two plays." Kieran Wills teamed up with Dusty Schraeder to win their match easily in two games (21-10 and 218). Jake Smyrnos and Ryan Derry also had a really good win in their junior varsity match and are continuing to improve. "We have one more match against first-place Coronado on Oct. 13 that promises to be a tough one as we play in Coronado where it is extremely windy in the afternoons. Coronado has played every match at their home courts this year where the wind gives them a huge advantage. Unfortunately, until we can get

courts built at MBHS finding court space to play matches is going to continue to be a challenge." Playoffs for team and individual pairs are scheduled to start in two weeks and will continue into November.

Football Mission Bay had a bye this past weekend. Under head coach Willie Matson, the Bucs enter play this week with a record of 3-2 as they prepare to host Lincoln this Friday. According to Matson, junior running back Kenyon Sims, senior wide receiver Keyon Holiday, and senior defensive back Tyrese Reed are all performing at a high level for the team.

ReWild unveils 8 options for Mission Bay ReWild Mission Bay – a project of San Diego Audubon and its partners to enhance and restore up to 170 acres of wetlands in the north east corner of Mission Bay – recently unveiled eight possible options for restoration. Based on community suggestions from two public workshops earlier this year, the draft plans were presented to more than 135 residents to collect input. Visit www.rewildmissionbay.org to view the potential alternatives. “Our community has been very vocal about its support for restoring and protecting this iconic part of San Diego that so many people love and cherish,” said Rebecca Schwartz Lesberg, project manager for ReWild Mission Bay. “These eight designs reflect what the community has asked for and identified as important to keep Mission Bay healthy and enjoyable for all uses and for generations to

come.”Schwartz Lesberg said. The recent public workshop was the third in a series of four. ReWild Mission Bay will work with scientists and engineers to determine the feasibility of the eight initial restoration alternatives. Refined versions of the alternatives presented on Tuesday, or combinations of features from several different alternatives, may move forward to become final restoration designs. Residents can expect one more public workshop to weigh in on these designs before they are finalized. “This is an unprecedented opportunity to protect our communities from sea level rise, expand habitat for endangered birds, help our kids get out in nature, and provide cleaner water for all San Diegans to enjoy in Mission Bay,” said Schwartz Lesberg. News Prop. J sparks debate at PB town council By DAVE SCHWAB Many who came to Pacific Beach Town Council's Sept. 21 meeting on Proposition J, a November ballot charter amendment regarding use of Mission Bay Park lease revenue, expected to hear it praised, not panned. But what they got was a fullblown debate over it instead of a rubber-stamping, with much of the proposition being questioned – if not outright objected to – by several critics, including two former District 2 City Council members. Proposition J, if passed Nov. 8, would change the current allocation of lease revenue derived from city-owned property in Mission Bay Park. Currently, 25 percent of $2.5 million of Mission Bay lease revenue, more than $20 million, goes to the City's Regional Parks Improvement Fund. All remaining funds are then allocated to the Mission Bay Park Improvement Fund. Additionally, the measure would clarify the process for completing prioritized capital improvements. Prop. J would also extend restricted use of annual Mission Bay lease revenue more than $20 million for an additional 30 years from the current expiration of 2039 to 2069. Where the biggest concern lies

though, is one aspect of the proposition which calls for contiguous land parcels to be added to Mission Bay Regional Park, which some suspect could be used to further commercialize the bay front, perhaps opening the door for a future hotel. “Right now with Mission Bay lease revenues, the first $20 million goes to the city's general fund, and with anything above and beyond that, 25 percent of the remainder goes to regional parks,” Christiana Gauger, a city fiscal and policy analyst, told PBTC. “After that, the rest of it goes to Mission Bay.” Should Prop. J pass and Mission Bay Park's lease is extended another 30 years, Gauger said the city estimates that more than “$1 billion will go to regional parks, with the lion's share of that going to Mission Bay.” But there were skeptics of the plan, including former District 2 council members Donna Frye and Ed Harris. The pair urged PBTC and local voters to take a much closer look at the proposition. They argued it may have loopholes in that could bring unintended consequences. “The idea behind Mission Bay Park was that we would have this beautiful public park and we would allow 25 percent of that park to be used by commercial leaseholders,

and the rest had to be used for the public,” Frye said. “A yes vote on this ballot measure will incorporate those limits into the City Charter, which currently limits commercial development to one hotel, that can only be changed by a two-thirds vote of the people.” But Frye contended that language in Prop. J subtly changes “the definition of what Mission Bay Park is.” She argued Prop. J, when read carefully, would allow city-owned property that is contiguous to Mission Bay Park to be added to it. “To me, this (language) change means that, for every acre of new contiguous land added to Mission Bay Park, that 25 percent of that could be developed for commercial leases,” Frye said. “We all need to think about how this measure might increase the total acreage available for commercial development above what is currently allowed.” Immediate past District 2 Counci man Ed Harris concurred with Frye. Noting he “had a hard time finding stuff on Prop. J,” Harris said “this is about another hotel on Mission Bay. If we (public) don't get involved … we're going to lose Mission Bay, and Rose Creek and Tecolote Canyon.” READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com

News Garnet Avenue rated dangerous for pedestrians and bicyclists By DAVE SCHWAB Garnet Avenue has been listed as one of the eight most dangerous corridors for motor vehicle-related pedestrian and bicycle collisions in San Diego. That reason is one of many and why several members of beautifulPB, a public nonprofit charity working to create a more sustainable Pacific Beach, attended a Sept. 29 Vision Zero Neighborhood Symposium discussing ways to make all streets in San Diego safer for pedestrians and other non-motorists. Vision Zero is working toward zero traffic deaths in San Diego, acknowledging that no loss of life is acceptable. San Diego is one of 15 cities nationwide committed to getting to zero deaths through Vision Zero. “The City has plans for seven of the eight corridors with designs for safer streets,” said Kathleen Ferrier, director of advocacy for Circulate San Diego, a regional nonprofit working to improve mobility choices and create healthy, more vibrant neighborhoods. “These plans include items such as curb extensions (pop outs) to shorten crossing distance for pedestrians, road diets (removing one lane

of travel, which has a high success rate for safety), roundabouts, bike lanes (as much as they provide for safer bicycling, they also help to slow traffic speeds and make streets safer in general).” Ferrier added that “PB has a concept for Garnet to put the road on a diet and remove one of the travel lanes in lieu of a protected bikeway, curb extensions, and high visibility crosswalks. “Closing Garnet to vehicles for a few days/hours will not only improve safety at some of those key hotspots, it's a great way to make people aware of the safety problems PB faces and to get everyone thinking about creative solutions to those problems,” said Pacific Beach Planning Group member Henish Pulickal, who attended the symposium. “The idea I like the best would be to create a pedestrian-only promenade.” Ferrior said a Comprehensive Pedestrian Collision Analysis – conducted by the City – of pedestrian/ vehicle crashes between 1998-2012, showed Garnet Avenue had a total of 157 pedestrian/vehicle crashes and "ranked seventh out of our eight (dangerous) corridors."

Christian J. Koalani, 67, of Pacific Beach, was sentenced Wednesday to eight years in state prison after operating a website that was used in online prostitution. Deputy District Attorney Dan Owens said this was Koalani’s third conviction for pimping and pandering, and this offense involved furnishing tranquilizers to a 17-year-old girl. “He victimized numerous people over many years and destroyed lives along the way,” said Owens afterwards. San Diego Superior Court Judge Polly Shamoon gave Koalani credit for serving 119 days in jail since his June 2 arrest by San Diego Police following a year-long investigation by the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force.. Koalani pleaded guilty to two counts of pandering in operating the now closed website. He also pleaded guilty to conspiracy with his 23-year-old wife, Hannah Koalani, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy as well.

The Point in MB offers SoCa style vibes for rent By MANNY LOPEZ According to Casey Fields, if you combine a skill set that includes professional experience as an event planner, decorator and owner of an outdoor adventure company, and spin it in a tornado, what you will wind up with is The Point. Located at 1010 Santa Clara Place in Mission Bay Park, The Point is a new and unique 3,000square-foot meeting space, cofounded by Fields, that is situated just steps away from an aquatic playground that spotlights the appeal of San Diego. “We saw that many companies just want to have a space that they can rent for a day to focus, or think creatively,” Fields said. “In the long-term, people value experiences more than anything else, and we’re in the business of creating experiences away from the worksite. We call it California style offsite.” Fields said that a key feature of her design is the ability to have synergy with the outdoors by incorporating plants, nine-foot-

tall bay windows that overlook Mission Bay, a living chandelier, natural lighting and desks, drawers, walls and chairs made from sustainably farmed, and locally sourced materials recycled after the 2003 Cedar Fire. To address the changing and unique needs of each user, Fields has incorporated a modular approach that extends to its conference room walls, which gives organizers the ability to reconfigure the entire space throughout the day, and customize the floor plan to suit their company's particular needs for communication. The Point sits within the space that once housed the original Performance 360 gym, next door to the Mission Bay Sportcenter, where clients can rent jet-ski’s, paddleboards and other water sports equipment. A water taxi is available to shuttle people back and forth from other Mission Beach locations. More information about The Point can be found at www.gettothepoint.io, or 858-336-7083. Business Upscale, modern Baja-inspired Pueblo opens By DAVE SCHWAB When restaurateur Mark Oliver acquired the former China Inn site in Pacific Beach, he wanted to establish something new – and different – among local eateries. He succeeded in creating the more upscale, seafood-centric Pueblo at 877 Hornblend St., which opened recently with its modernistic, indooroutdoor look and feel in a larger revamped space with new outside and upstairs patio dining spaces. “I knew I wanted to do something coastal,” said Oliver, who was once part of the executive team at George’s La Jolla, and was also previously involved with Mission Valley's Randy Jones All American Sports Grill. “In my view, Pacific Beach was underserved in terms of upscale restaurants.” Oliver talked about his business approach. “My passion is nice ambience, great food, good service and hospitality, serving an adult market,” he said. “I'd like to serve a market that caters and appeals to all spectrums, all age groups.” Pueblo does all that. “It can be a family place for casual dining, or it could be a special-occasion place for a family, or a date night, or a place to meet friends,” said Oliver, who described his new eatery's cuisine as modern Baja coastal. “We're looking at Baja as the influence,” he said, adding,“But we're not doing necessarily traditional recipes.” Noting his menu is strongly influenced with fresh seafood, Oliver pointed out, “My aim was to take Baja coastal food and add our twist on it to make it contemporary, with seafood, fresher ingredients, less reliance on fats and more reliance on

the ocean. Healthy dining, really.” Noting the original China Inn site when acquired in January 2015 was about 5,800 square feet, Oliver noted Pueblo has now been redeveloped into an 8,000-square-foot space. “It was completely indoors,” said Oliver adding, “We got a remodel permit. I took a good year and a half (to remodel) and the first several months were all dedicated to getting permits and the plan passed through the city.” Reconstruction on the nearly 60year-old building began in late October 2015 and took somewhat less than “10 months to build,” Oliver said noting getting his alcohol license transferred from the China Inn was challenged, which significantly lengthened how long it took to get the restaurant open. “When they protest, that takes what normally is a 45- to 60-day process, and puts it into the 1-1/2 year category, or it can, as it was in our case. I have an agreement with the

police and the ABC on what the 10 conditions are for the license here. They're downgraded significantly from what they were when it was the China Inn, and the police and the ABC were satisfied with that.” What are people looking for today in a modern, upscale coastal eatery? “They're looking for food and service in a happy environment,” said Oliver. “What I've tried to create here is a place that very much fits in with Pacific Beach, and the lifestyle of Pacific Beach. It's a little bit more upscale than most other things out here. READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com

Is Pilates good at managing anti- stress and anti-aging? – It has been claimed, though not yet scientifically proven, that Pilates workouts release internal antiaging and stress-relieving chemicals known as endorphins into the body, giving a natural high after each session. Endorphins are the body’s natural feel good chemicals, and when they are released through exercise, your mood is boosted naturally. Pilates exercises can be tailored to any level of fitness. If you go to a private Pilates teacher or Pilates class you get a unique set of exercises from the Pilates method based on your own postural habits and problems. Pilates is not considered a cardio-vascular workout, except when certain exercises, such as the Jump board when added to the reformer. However, many Pilates addicts claim it is great for stress relief, and mood boosting. The focus upon proper breathing, stretching, and correct, aligned motion in space can help release negative emotions in the body.
