The day-long series of events also features a morning beach run, Pacific BeachFest 5K.

The City of San Diego is progressing on its $2.1 million design-build project involving replacing six-inch, '20s-era iron pipe running from north of La Playa Avenue to south of Tourmaline Street and west to Mission Boulevard and east to Ingraham Street. “Progress is going well,” said Matt DeBeliso, assistant engineer with the City of San Diego’s Public Works Department. “Water mains are being replaced on Haines Street currently. The contractor, TC Construction, has a four-phased construction plan in

place. We’re estimating work to be completed in October 2017.” The infrastructure replacement project includes: installation of approximately 0.5 mile of new sewer main to replace concrete pipe built in 1989; installation of approximately five miles of new water main to replace old cast iron built in 1967; replacement of old cast iron water mains which have a history of breaking; and resurfacing streets by slurry seal, asphalt overlay or concrete replacement upon project conclusion.

PB Elementary students debate the gum pole Teacher Dave Sandler and his fifthgrade students from Pacific Beach Elementary inspected the gum pole on the corner of Bayard Street and Garnet Avenue on Sept. 20. After reading a story about the gum pole in the Beach and Bay Press in Sandler's class, the fifth graders debated and wrote persuasive essays discussing whether the gum pole is a form of art or "disgusting." Eleven students decided it was disgusting, while 18 felt that it

was a form of art. Sandler and his 29 students then walked to the pole at the corner of Bayard and Garnet to see for themselves. While at the pole, they inspected a section of sidewalk on Garnet Avenue, which was covered in black dots, remnants of discarded gum. After counting the dots, they estimated that there are more than 10,000 pieces of dried, dirty gum stuck to the sidewalks in just one block of Garnet Avenue.

The students are now pondering solutions to the gum problem on Pacific Beach sidewalks. Ideas range from special collection receptacles outside each bar to inventions that could repurpose gum into glue or resin. "This project, prompted simply by reading an article in our local newspaper, increased awareness about our community and empowered the kids to want to make a change," explained Sandler.

Mission Bay trio leading Bucs’ volleyball By DAVE THOMAS When it comes to leadership on a high school sports team, that task oftentimes falls to the seniors. Although some teams will sport some outstanding freshmen or sophomores, the talents only go so far. Despite all that great talent, a younger athlete simply does not have the same experience level as a senior or even a junior for that matter. If you look at the Mission Bay girls volleyball team under head coach Steve Upp, talent and leadership is most notably identified by a trio of senior captains. Alex Briski, Maddie Tandy and Samantha Zambrano have all been with the varsity program since their sophomore seasons. As the 2016 season unfolds, Upp is looking for his tri-captains to be the spark necessary to take the Bucs to great heights. Beach & Bay Press recently caught up with the trio for an email interview, looking at this season, the girls’ goals, and advice for potential upcoming players. BBP – As tri-captains, how do you see your roles on the team as leaders? Zambrano – As a tri-captain, I see myself as a leader who continues to push the team forward both in games and in practice. I constantly motivate the team to play at the best of our abilities in order to result in success. Tandy – My role as a tri-captain is to push my team to the best they

can be. Last year we got so far making it to CIF finals. I hope that with our leadership we will push our team to be as great as we were last year. BBP – Being it is your final season of volleyball at MBHS, how do you want to go out? Zambrano – With this being my last year playing volleyball at MB, I am determined to make it far in playoffs and hopefully win CIF. Winning league for a second year in a row would also be a huge accomplishment for our program. After losing in CIF finals last year, I'm ready for us to come back with a

vengeance and a drive to win. Tandy – Since this is our last year at MBHS I want to make this season great and leave a legacy. Briski – As my final season takes way I'm hoping we can repeat the success of last season but the primary goal is to improve and do as well as we can. BBP – Does this year's team have the talent and drive to go far? If so, what is it about this group of girls and the coaching? With the fall sports season fully under way, a number of Mission Bay varsity teams have secured wins in the first few weeks of action. On the gridiron, Mission Bay Buccaneers under head coach Willie Matson comes into play this week at Kearney (Friday, Sept. 23) with a record of 2-2. The Bucs rolled to a 49-14 victory over Clairemont this past Friday. “Both sides of the ball did a fine job on Friday,” Matson commented. “We’re looking for more consistency from the team heading into Friday’s game.”

On the field hockey scene, Mission Bay under head coach Kris Auer, sported a 3-1 mark heading into play this week. According to Auer, several players have stood out to date, among them Kylie Kroeger, Naomy Espinosa and Emery Reyna. “Kylie is an exceptional player,” Auer stated. “She is incredibly skilled and very fit. She has worked very hard to put herself in a position to excel. Naomy and Emery play center midfield for us. They complement each other very well; Naomy is a passer and playmaker, Emery is the destroyer.” Auer also noted that the girls quickly asserted themselves as lead-

ers and role models, governing themselves and keeping each other in line. As for improvements, Auer is looking to see the team convert a higher percentage of chances into goals. “The lone loss on our record is because of this. We had more shots, more short corners, and more attacking possessions yet lost 3-2 in OT.” Auer added that she is very proud of the way the girls represent the school and community, noting that they are great kids, wonderful students and solid athletes.

Community PB honors first responders at PAESAN picnic By DAVE SCHWAB Pacific Beach Town Council is exhorting residents to turn out in a show of appreciation for public servants at the 36th annual tribute to Northern Division first responders 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 3700 Corona Oriente Road. The event starts with a Hawaiian dance performance at 4:30 p.m. and continues until 6:30 p.m.. First responders being feted include police officers, fire-fighters, lifeguards and Mission Bay Park rangers. The fun, family-focused Police and Emergency Services Appreciation Night (PAESAN, brother or countryman in Italian) barbecue picnic will also include a fire truck for kids. “This is a community appreciation picnic,” said Ellen Citrano, a Pacific Beach Town Council (PBTC) volunteer. “It's a big thank you.” “Each year, we raise money to give to one of these departments, something they really need to do their job and protect the community,” said PBTC president Cathie Jolley. “Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we’re able to provide something that the city’s budget doesn’t cover.” Last year Jolley handed off a $3,000 check to park rangers to buy a new ATV. In 2014, PAESAN helped pay for a renovation of the kitchen at the PB fire station. This year the SDPD Beach

Team will receive a Polaris 4-wheel ATV, which costs $15,000. “The Catamaran Hotel has always been a big sponsor, and this year they donated $5,000 to kick it (fundraising) off,” Citrano said. PAESAN was launched 36 years ago by Bill Bender, a member of the PBTC board and local restaurant manager. “It was something we started after the summer to thank the police for all their help,” said Anne McDaniel, a 44-year PBTC member. “Bill chaired PAESAN for two years and when I asked if I could help out, he let me take over. The late Mary Wilding, the

Council’s office secretary, also helped start the event, and encouraged expanding it to include fire-fighters, park rangers and lifeguards.” The first two years PAESAN was held in the Catamaran Resort and Spa, honoring the Police Department’s Northern Division. As it grew, the event moved outdoors to make room for more families. PB residents supported the event by buying tickets and making larger donations; the officers, firefighters, lifeguards, rangers and their families enjoyed free dinners.

Previously, the high-profile corner lot was a gardening business named Too Pooped to Plant. It was also once the residence of Earl and Birdie Taylor, for whom Pacific Beach's nearby library is named. Rojas promised new and returning patrons that Cafe 976 has kept its old charm, and built upon that to establish its new foundation. “We brought back that same homey, comfortable feeling. It's almost like coming to your own home,” he said. “What we tried to change is the whole attitude, improving customer service.” The goal was to re-create the cafe

so as to “keep people coming back and feeling comfortable every time they come in,” Rojas said. The menu at the full-service cafe, open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch from 7 a.m.to 7 p.m., is only slightly different. “We kept it (menu) virtually the same,” said Rojas. “It's very healthy, useable. I added a few more hearty sandwiches, like a French dip and a turkey pastrami reuben.” The eatery's GM also recommended Cafe 976's steamed egg dish that he said is both “fluffy and healthy. “We also have sandwich and soup combinations,” Rojas added. “The kitchen stops (cooking) at 5 p.m.,” said Rojas noting pre-prepared deli sandwiches, pastries, bagels, smoothies, lattes and espressos, lemon drinks and other refreshments will still be available until the restaurant closes. News Mid-Coast Trolley project receives $1B grant By DAVE SCHWAB News of a $1 billion federal grant to help build the 11-mile trolley extension from the Old Town Transit Center to the University City community was greeted as a windfall by the San Diego Association of Governments. “This is the largest single grant we've every gotten for a light-rail project,” said Gary Gallegos, executive director of San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), the region's transportation planning agency. Pointing out the overall cost of the trolley project is a little more than $2 billion, Gallegos noted, “You can't build a $2 billion project for $1 billion,” underscoring the significance of federal funding. Recently, an agreement was signed to provide 50 percent of the funds to extend service in the Mid-Coast Trolley Extension from Old Town to UCSD, Westfield UTC Transit Center and the University City community. The roughly five-year construction project will extend the existing Blue Line, building nine new stops along the north coast of San Diego including near Mission Beach, Pacific Beach near Balboa Avenue, the VA Medical Center, the UCSD campus, and the dense residential and commercial areas along Genesee Avenue. “The Mid-Coast Trolley will bring fast, reliable transit to the places where it’s most needed, including our largest

research university and biggest employment center (UTC),” said Ron Roberts, SANDAG chair and San Diego County Board of Supervisors chair. “At the same time, it is an outstanding example of our ability to leverage the region’s local TransNet dollars to bring in outside money to complete major transportation projects.” The San Diego region was able to garner the 50 percent match for the Mid-Coast Trolley in large part because it has a dedicated local source of funding that provided the other 50 percent match for the project. Revenues from TransNet, the existing countywide half-cent sales tax for transportation, are covering half of the nearly $2.1 billion total project cost. Addressing criticism that light-rail is an expensive transportation alternative, Gallegos replied, “It's true lightrail has high up-front capital costs. It's obviously cheaper to buy a bus than build a trolley rail line. But in the long haul, the rail line is more cost-effective over its life cycle. If you

buy a new bus you have to hire a new driver. With a trolley, you can always just add more cars.” There are other reasons for choosing light-rail as a viable transportation alternative, Gallegos noted. A ceremonial signing of the Full Funding Grant Agreement – dedicating approximately $1 billion to the Mid-Coast project over the next 10 years subject to annual Congressional approval – took place recently on the campus of UCSD where the future Pepper Canyon Trolley station will be built. As part of the ceremony, Roberts was handed a symbolic $1 billion check. Gallegos said groundbreaking for the 11-mile, Mid-Coast Trolley extension is on Oct. 22. “Construction will take about 56 months,” he said adding, “This is considered to be a mega-project with a lot of bridge and concrete work, and the railway going across freeways.” The good news though is that “for the most part, the project is in the public right-of-way,” Gallegos added. SANDAG's chief said the trolley extension will be an important transportation cross-connector. He noted the Trolley Blue Line extension will connect the San Diego region's two largest employment centers (downtown and UTC) with the rail networks in South Bay and East County. believe that this year's team still has the ability to go far. We are all eager to win and improve our game altogether and I know coach Steve is going to push us so that we can do so. Tandy – I think our team this year has a huge possibility of making it far, not only in league but in CIF. This group of girls has the best team spirit that we have ever had. Our coach has also been pushing us to work harder this year. Briski – Although this team is much less experienced than last year’s, we have a solid core and an extremely supportive program behind us. BBP – What are some highlights from your careers at Mission Bay? Zambrano – The most significant highlight of my volleyball career here at MB is definitely our last CIF semifinal game versus Christian. After we scored the winning point of the most intense game I've ever played (the score was 34-32), everyone on the bleachers rushed the court and cheered for us and it was the most exhilarating and best feeling in the world. I still get excited when I watch the game point highlight. Tandy – Some individual highlights that I have had are as fresh-

As a team, we won league and made CIF finals in my junior year. Briski – Last season was definitely huge for us; winning league and making CIF finals, both of which are firsts for Mission Bay. BBP – For any underclassmen thinking of coming out for volleyball next season, what advice would you give them? Zambrano – I would tell any underclassmen thinking of playing volleyball to train hard and really have the drive to play intensely because that's what makes our team so great; we truly want it and will get past any obstacle together as a team. Tandy – Some advice that I would give the underclassmen coming up would be to push yourself and not let your mistakes get in your head. Volleyball is a very mental game because every point someone wins and loses, but the key is to not let your mistakes effect your playing.
