Locally owned bike rental shops feel economic impact of DecoBike By DAVE SCHWAB Bike rental shops in Pacific and Mission beaches say their business has unquestionably been hurt by competition from Florida-based DecoBike, which operates bike share stations citywide, including two controversial ones on Pacific Beach's boardwalk. Matt Gardner, longtime owner of four rental outlets, Cheap Rentals and Mission Beach Rentals at Belmont in Mission Beach, claims he's lost $60,000 in sales over the past year due to DecoBike competition. “That's a big hit to take,” Gardner said. “We never had a loss in (rental) numbers ever from the previous year until DecoBike came in.” Jake Russell, whose family has owned Surf Monkey, at 853 Grand Ave., for generations, pointed out “it's difficult to break out” the actual numbers on just how much his business is down from bikeshare competition. But he added, “Obviously, we've been impacted.” Russell noted a nearby bike share station, located across Grand a few hundred yards up the street from Surf Monkey, “gets very little play” from customers, mostly tourists who Russell claims, “couldn't find my store.” DecoBike signed a 10-year contract with the city of San Diego and spent $8 million setting up bike share infrastructure citywide. After more
than a year of delays, DecoBike opened its first rental stations in January 2015. And the attitude of many beach residents toward the bike share company has not been positive. “I am adamantly opposed to the DecoBike corporation putting their monstrous kiosks on the boardwalk,” said Jennifer Tandy, a community activist and former honorary PB mayor. “All Pacific Beach and Mission Beach groups vehemently oppose the kiosks on the boardwalk, as it is in direct unfair competition with the established local bike-rental businesses, obstructs disabled and generalpublic access, blocks the stunning views and does not benefit the community of PB at all.” Melinda Pederson, administrative manger for DecoBike San Diego, has defended the company's bike share locations, including the two existing ones on the PB boardwalk. “Ridership revenue and advertising/sponsorship revenue are the only sources of income for the bike share,” Pederson said. “For this reason, it's very important that we have visible stations in desirable locations that generate high ridership. “We do have quite a bit of local ridership,” Pederson continued. “Most riders, both visitors and locals, use the bike share for short trips purchased at the station.”
Both beach bike-rental owners Russell and Gardner concur in the view that bike share, though it may be intended to be the final leg of a masstransit commute back and forth to work, remains primarily a recreational indulgence for tourists. “The county grand jury's report says 77 percent of DecoBike's ride sharing is for recreational use,” said Gardner. “The city of San Diego has no business renting bikes on a recreational basis that compete with local bike shops.” Gardner added that bike-rental mom and pops, like many other beach-oriented businesses, are geared toward tourists and the prime summer season. “We make about 40 percent of our income from June through August,” he said. Russell takes the argument even further claiming DecoBike's business model “is an utter failure.” Beyond that, Russell said, “What really grinds me is their top-down, not bottom-up business model,” wherein the city comes in and “tells you (business) this is what you have to do — whether it works or not.” “They're trying to put me out of business,” claimed Russell, adding, “So what we (rental owners) need to do is organize and get the word out” about DecoBike's ongoing expansion plans citywide. “I think DecoBike's business model

New start date, programs and paint at Mission Bay Cluster schools By DAVE SCHWAB Principals at Mission Bay Cluster’s six schools – Barnard Asia Pacific Language Academy, Crown Point, Mission Bay High, Pacific Beach Elementary, Pacific Beach Middle and Kate Sessions – say there's a lot to look forward to in the new school year. The first day of school is Monday, Aug. 29, a week earlier than normal, so mark your calendars, notes the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD), the second largest school district in the state, of which the Mission Bay Cluster is a part. “Pacific Beach Elementary (PBE) has undergone some major changes,” noted principal Denise Goulart, who joined the PBE team in April. “Starting with beautification efforts, PBE has brought families and community members together to clean the school grounds, paint murals, and to declutter excess materials. All hallways have been repainted, and the main office got a much needed face-lift.” Goulart added PBE, in partnership with the community, has “co-created new mission and vision statements that allow us to build a culture at our school that focuses on strengthening all disciplines by using a scientific lens. We were lucky enough to receive a 'Project Lead the Way' grant, which will

By DAVE SCHWAB Thanks to an enterprising Pacific Beach couple, a better household flytrap may be on a store shelf near you soon. Dennis and Joylyn Darnell have spent two years developing and marketing a new product named the Garbage Can Fly Trap, marketed at Hammer & Nails Ace Hardware at 890 Turquoise St. “The owners said OK for that to be our first retail location,” said Dennis adding, “as soon as our (first) shipment clears customs (in L.A.) we'll stock his store. It will basically be a pilot for us.” "We're excited to help local inventors get their first product on the shelves,” said PB Ace Hardware owner Ron Roman. “Even better if it solves a local problem." Inventing a product, testing and marketing it, getting all the necessary permitting and licensing, copy-
writing it as well as finding a Chinese manufacturing site, has all been a real learning experience for both Darnells. “We knew it would be a challenge – and it was,” said Dennis. “The packaging, the graphics, the design, the content – it's just constantly been working and re-working, learning, receiving feedback from (potential) customers,” said Joylyn. “We're excited to (finally) get it out there.” The Darnells were sitting in their North PB kitchen a couple of years ago when Dennis, an engineering graduate from UC San Diego, had the proverbial “light bulb” go off over his head. “Dennis really hates flies,” noted Joylyn, an SDSU marketing graduate. She pointed out Dennis had “tinkered” with developing flytraps previously, and that they both had become irritated noticing flies walking around the rim of their indoor

garbage cans trying to get in. Dennis went to a home appliance store that very night to buy parts to construct his better flytrap. A year later, the couple had a patent pending for their “Garbage Can Fly Trap.” They then launched a fundraising campaign on kickstarter.com to get prospective buyers to help them launch early develop-

District 2 Councilwoman Lorie Zapf was one of the Darnell's Kickstarter pre-orderers. “She's the one who put us over the top,” Dennis said. With Kickstarter funds, the Darnells hired a local engineering firm to optimize trap design for injection molding. The pair said UC San Diego student Du Chen from China reached out to them about her parent's manufacturing firm, which the Darnells, with their 3-year-old son Dakota in tow, visited in May. Subsequently, the Darnell's reduced their 24-piece fly trap design down to a 4-piece, plastic injected molded version. Their first shipment of 500 fly traps and 3,000 cartridges just arrived and will be transported to San Diego. Dennis is also working on an

All that's needed to install the Garbage Can Fly Trap is to bore a small hole with a drill into the side of the garbage can, and the plastic trap cartridge lined with fly paper just pops right in. The Darnells also conducted a pilot test with local residents for the city of San Diego, which has determined their invention works, and said it's OK to modify curbside cans to incorporate their trap into the lids. Is this the end of product invention and development for the Darnells? No way, said Joylyn, noting Dennis already is working on something new, something totally unrelated to the fly trap – though he won't disclose exactly what it is. Yet. Sports Bucs field hockey set for winning campaign By DAVE THOMAS Much to the chagrin of many people, summer is only here for a few more weeks. That said, it means that fall high school sports at Mission Bay High are up and running. One sport that is looking to stick to a winning formula is the girls field hockey program. Under the direction of 14th year coach Kris Auer, the Bucs are coming off of a 10-6 season in 2015. According to Auer, key contributions are expected this season from the likes of Kylie Kroeger, Naomy Espinosa, Katrin Eisenhardt, Emery Reyna and Claire Fitzsimmons. One goal that has already been met is these young ladies doing their best to represent their school and community. “Our team represents the best of Mission Bay High School,” Auer stated. “These student athletes represent this community with pride on the field and in the classroom. “I couldn’t be more proud of how these girls take on the ownership of this team and have molded it in their own image: fun-loving and hardworking,” he added. With a winning formula such as that, expect good things again this season from the Buccaneers.

reality show such as “American Ninja Warrior” or even “Survivor,” but for now, she is one of the leaders along with Eugene Kim and Angelo Neroni. Voychick, a Pacific Beach resident, said she never knew how being a tribe leader would dramatically influence her life. “It blows my mind that all I am doing is dishing out a gnarly workout, acting crazy and having a great time, but somehow making a world of a difference to so many people in my community.” Really, this kind of “buzz” about the November Project is a common theme among enthusiasts nationwide – just read their blogs. Cofounder of November Project and current La Jolla resident Brogan Graham said the movement’s success only confirmed his belief that “the world needs more kindness and more free outdoor classes. It’s not surprising (to me). The better we get on our smartphones, the worse we get at communication.” Although the free fitness movement started in Boston, it has
already traveled to 20 other cities in the United States, seven in Canada and two in Europe. Voychick said many participants become part of an “extended family” and create lifelong friendships and even unexpected romances. “The people at November Project don’t come because it’s an obligation or because they feel guilty that they spent money on it. They come for the good vibes, the hugs, and the workout. So when you #justshowup and it is free for everyone, there is a different feel to it all.” However, just because there’s a bunch of active folks gathering at the crack of dawn to workout doesn’t mean one should feel intimidated to try out the group. It’s not just for people who are already in great shape or happen to be extroverts. It’s a group for everyone. And everyone, literally, from the 99-year-old to the baby (and even the dog), are invited. “It’s (for) adults who still want to play. There are two rules: (you) have to be kind and you have to work your butt out,” Graham explained. Voychick seconds Graham’s thoughts. “I would tell people not to feel nervous and to trust me – if they
regret coming, I will buy them breakfast.” Plus, she added that the group “has been the most positive influence in my life and my family’s life.” In fact, it seems no one can say enough about the life-changing results found in the November Project. Everyone can just show up. It’s that simple. Arrive and be ready to go at 6:29 a.m. and plan to leave at 7:29 a.m. The group meets every Wednesday at Balboa Park at the Bea Evenson Fountain and on Mondays for the rest of August they’ll be meeting at Tourmaline Surfing Park in North Pacific Beach. The group changes their Monday locations every month (in September, Monday meetings will be at the Embarcadero), however Wednesdays are always in Balboa Park. Voychick is a trooper and Graham knows it. “The success of the November Project has to do with the leaders… look at Ashleigh… she’s a powerhouse person and no matter where she is, people gravitate to her.” Voychick has been with the San Diego tribe since its inception in 2013. Task Force that looked into criminal commercial sex enterprises. Dale A. Vinzant, 68, operated another similar website and he has pleaded guilty to attempted pimping, soliciting a prostitute, and two counts of money laundering. Vinzant, who was arrested in Mission Bay on June 3 in the same investigation, faces up to four years and four months in state prison. Sentencing is set for Sept. 8 before San Diego Superior Court Judge Dan Link. Court documents say Vinzant must forfeit his business account assets from the website
as part of his sentence. His website allowed prostitutes to post profiles and ads for sexual services. Before his website was shut down, Vinzant offered membership services for both customers and prostitutes that included dozens of chat rooms. Members paid $15 per month. Vinzant posted a review about his sexual encounter with one person, records say. Vinzant is free on $150,000 bond. Christian Koalani remains in jail on $500,000 bail while Hannah Koalani is free on bond. Christian and Hannah Koalani have both pleaded not guilty.
