outside the science room. Here the water tastes fresh and cool, more like mountain spring water than the tepid liquid usually associated with public drinking fountains. The reason for that change is due to three students – Arielle Hancko, Katrina

St. Paul's Lutheran n St. Paul's Lutheran School is excited to wrap up its 69th academic year as part of the Pacific Beach community. Four eighth-grade graduates are being recognized for being valedictorians of the class 2016 and earning a 4.0 GPA the entire year: Greta Fehlan, Kate Hartford, Violet Park, and Sam Rudenberg. Fehlan is also the recipient of a prestigious scholarship to Concordia University, Irvine for her academic achievement.

Diego high school. The project began in August, when Steve Walters, a science teacher, noticed how much plastic was thrown away during lunchtime. He found three students willing to help him, and they spent 97 days collecting plastic from the trash cans after lunch. Together, they gathered more than 100 pounds of bottles, bowls, spoons, forks, straws, and plastic wrap. More than 90 percent of it could have been recycled. None of it was. This effort was the start of a long campaign to reduce the plastic waste at Mission Bay High. After assembling the recovered bottles into a 6-foot-long plastic boat, the students showed their results to the school district, who agreed to use MBHS as a pilot school for their waste reduction program. With the help of a few motivated students, Walters took charge of the effort to turn their school around. A large part of the plastic problem was the number of water bottles thrown away each day, and that was due in part to the quality of the drinking water at the school. Though MBHS sports a number of drinking fountains, students rarely use them, as they didn’t like the taste of the water. Walters talked to the San Diego

Pure Water Program, a project dedicated to providing San Diego residents with clean, sustainable water. The program offered to donate a water purifier to the school, and take care of maintenance for the first three years. After that, however, the school would have to raise the funds on their own. The water purifier sits in the science room, on the other side of the wall from the renovated drinking fountain. The water flows out of a wall faucet, is filtered and stored in two 20-gallon tanks, and gets piped through the drinking fountain when a student presses a lever. The resulting water is much cleaner than you’d find elsewhere in the school, or even elsewhere in the county. “I haven’t touched San Diego water in years,” Walters said. Next to the tanks are several boxes of aluminum water bottles. With the help of the Surfrider Foundation, Walters landed a corporate sponsor – Yelp – which agreed to donate 250 water bottles to the school. Walters is selling the reusable bottles at $5 each. Not only will they hopefully replace plastic bottles on the campus, but the funds will let the school maintain the water filter after the threeyear grace period. “Change is key,” said Walters. “It’s the most important thing a school could be doing right now.” READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com

After graduating high school, he worked at Moss’s café serving burgers, catfish and beer. Joining the military was an option to get out of Tennessee. The Korean war began and not wanting to go in the Army, Charlie joined the Navy with his cousin Neil– perhaps a strange choice for people who didn’t know how to swim. Charlie became the postman and telegraph operator on the USS Wiltsie. The Wiltsie patrolled Korean waters and the Tawain Straight before communist shore batteries off Wonsan lobbed shells in her direction, scoring a hit on the destroyer's fantail. The ship suffered no casualties and soon resumed her local patrol operations in Korean waters. Whilst in the Navy, Charlie visited many places in Asia, but enjoyed shore leave in San Diego, where he fell in love with the place. After the Navy, Charlie re-located to San Diego, and began selling real estate in Pacific Beach. In 1961 he started his career on Cass St. before moving, in 1964, to Grand and Ingraham where his office is still today. In May of 1986, he built the Wendy’s Restaurant building on the corner and his office is still upstairs. Over these years he raised two children and watched Pacific Beach grow and change. He has seen bank robberies of the bank across the street, and of course, the rising prices of real estate. A picture hanging in his office still shows cow paddocks in what is now downtown PB. Charlie has been selling real estate for over sixty years. He has sold some PB properties many times, seeing the prices increase from $15000 in 1956 to over 1 million in 2016. Of course the paperwork for sales has increased just as much. Charlie is an honest business man, his 60 year business record stands for itself. He has also been a continuing member of the Pacific Beach Kwanis club and is always willing to help his local community. Many of the local businessmen began running the PB Boardwalk in 1968. Charlie was one of about 40 that ran Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6am. He doesn’t run anymore, but he still walks two miles of the boardwalk on those same days. There are only three of those businessmen left who still show up at the beach at 6am. If you see him there early in the morning, say hello. He will flash you a smile and say hello back. Don’t be late though, Charlie always says if you are on time, you’re late!

Pacific Beach physical therapist earns honor Tiffany Piquilloud recently received the Most Influential Clinical Instructor Award by the students in the San Diego State University's doctor of physical therapy program. Piquilloud, a board-certified specialist in neurologic physical therapy, serves as the executive director and senior physical therapist at Challenge Center, a nonprofit organization that provides exceptional neuro-rehabilitation to seniors and people with disabilities on a sliding scale after their insurance coverage has ended.

Piquilloud and her husband, Blaise, have two daughters, 8 and 10, and live in Pacific Beach.

Bubbles the whale dies at SeaWorld

On June 9 SeaWorld San Diego announced the passing of one its most beloved animals, Bubbles the pilot whale. In her early- to mid-50s, Bubbles was the oldest pilot whale in a zoological park. She has inspired and amazed more than 100 million guests for nearly 50 years. Loved by her trainers and veterinarians, Bubbles had been a member of the SeaWorld family for nearly 30 years. She was one of several pilot whales and a dozen dolphins who have participated in various shows at Dolphin Stadium since the late 1980s. A necropsy will be performed to attempt to determine the cause of death.

Business New name, expanded menu highlight Beachtown BBQ By MARSHA KAY SEFF The name of the Pacific Beach restaurant has changed, but the traditional baby-back ribs – all 900 pounds a week of them – are familiar, with new and creative sauces. After almost three decades at the Promenade at Mission Boulevard and Pacific Beach Drive, this former Tony Roma’s franchise has gone independent, with the new name Beachtown BBQ. And with the name change comes a continuing list of new menu items, in addition to the ribs, fish and chicken that evoke memories of the restaurant’s history, according to owners Dan and Peggy Mazzella and their son Matt, the floor manager. The couple – Dan is a lawyer and Peggy, an architect – have been involved in the enterprise since her late father opened the doors, and the couple have owned and operated the restaurant since 2009. “We already had the most extensive menu (of any of the Tony Roma’s) in the country,” Dan said. Venturing out of the corporate structure allows for more flexibility. “This move frees us up to work with local vendors for more organic, fresh offerings.” The evolving menu will feature even more fish choices, including

tacos, while the owners are experimenting with new recipes. The list of local craft beers and California wines will continue to expand as well. “If you enjoyed what we’ve been doing,” Matt said, “you won’t be disappointed. There’s always been a local flavor and now we can embrace it.” Being independent also allows the family, enthusiastic environmentalists, to continue using their cornstarch straws that are biodegradable and “bird-friendly,” while discovering even more ways to reduce Beachtown BBQ’s impact on the environment. With three sons who took turns working in the restaurant, the

Mazzellas are enthusiastic community advocates. Dan is president of Discover PB, while the restaurateurs participate in an array of community activities, including the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation walks and Taste of PB. Beachtown BBQ also will continue to donate to a variety of local organizations, as well as continue to serve as a game-day base for alumni of Syracuse University, where Peggy and Dan met. Meanwhile, they’re in the midst of giving the place a facelift, including paint and colorful patio umbrellas. They have replaced the iconic neon cowboy wall-hanging with beach and surfer photos by local photographer Michael Sangiolo. More-inclusive renovations, including a home-like lounging area, where patrons can linger, and “community” tables, where multiple families can socialize, are set for December, one of the slower months at the beach. Vaqueros were the first cowboys in California. They were highly skilled horsemen and cattle herders who were an integral part of the early cattle trade in California. After 440 career wins, coach Kane retires By DAVE THOMAS If you attended a Mission Bay High boys basketball game over the last decade-plus, you saw a familiar face on the Bucs sideline game after game. While that face won’t be there in a coaching capacity moving forward, the lessons that he taught many young men over time will in all likelihood remain for years to come on and off the court. Dennis Kane, who recently retired from the coaching ranks with a remarkable 440 career wins (at several schools), has just about done and seen everything when it comes to high school basketball in San Diego, a coaching career that goes back to the early 1970s. Ranked sixth all-time in wins in San Diego boys basketball history, Kane captured six league titles and one CIF title (2007 at Mission Bay) along the way. His stepping down allows Mission Bay High assistant coach Marshawn Cherry to lead the Bucs moving forward. Kane, a counselor at MBHS, who also coached at San Diego High and Kearny High, recently spoke via email about not only his time spent at Mission Bay High, but his long tenure as a coach in general. BBP: What led you to decide to retire? DK: I need to exhale and smell the roses for a while. Since 1972, I have known where I was going to be

BBP: What are some memories you will take from having been Mission Bay High’s boys basketball coach? DK: As always, the kids, the staff, the people, the trials and tribulations, the elation and joy of teaching and coaching. And as they used to say on ABC’s “Wide World of Sports” “the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” BBP: What has Mission Bay High meant to you after all these years?

DK: That’s a hard one, like asking, “What have your children meant to you after all of these years?” I guess the answer would be the most joyous and most frustrating experience I ever had all happening at the same time. BBP: For anyone who might think of getting into coaching today, what advice do you have for them? DK: Get ready for the ride of your life, a totally rewarding yet demanding position that will test you in every way. When it came to giving his all to the game of basketball and caring about countless kids along the way, Kane hit more than his share of successful shots.

MBHS football player gets major change of scenery By DAVE THOMAS It isn’t often that a kid from San Diego decides to call Montana home for several years, albeit via Massachusetts. In fact, you could say it is one in a million. That said Mission Bay High football product Lamarriel Taylor decided to do just that. After completing his scholastic career with the Buccaneers (recorded more than 1,500 receiving yards and 23 TDs in just two seasons of play), Taylor took his talents across the country to play at the University of Massachusetts. After redshirting for Minutemen this past season, Taylor decided it was time for a change. When it became apparent to Taylor that UMass was not quite what

he wanted, he looked west, ending up in Missoula (Mont.), where he has four years of eligibility available to play for the Griz. With a scholarship offer in-hand, Taylor was slated to be one of more than two dozen newcomers suiting up for Montana (reached second round of the FCS playoffs last year) this coming season. Change is definitely something this young man is accustomed to, having gone from a challenging upbringing in East St. Louis (Ill.) to relocating to San Diego to live with family. During his time at Mission Bay, Taylor not only starred on the football field, but he recorded a 4.0 GPA and captured a National Merit Scholarship. With both Mission Bay High and

UMass in the rearview mirror, Taylor looks to continue his success on and off the field in Big Sky Country for Montana, a school that has several players on its current roster who graduated from San Diego area high schools. The Griz come into the 2016 ranked 16th in the FCS Top 25 pre-season poll. In discussing his reason to transfer to Montana, Taylor noted on goGriz.com that, “I was looking for more of a winning culture and being around guys who expect to win. Guys who are accountable for their actions and want to go out together as a team and try to win a national championship." How the Griz do this coming season remains to be seen, but their pipeline to San Diego of talented players just grew by one.

online with negative reviews, which hurts their business and in turn hurts the TOT bottom line.” Funding for this year is approved in the budget allocation, but it is important to provide a continuous funding source. Zapf has encouraged the residents of Mission Beach to create a Mission Beach Community Benefits District to guarantee funding for the second weekly trash pick-up in future years. “The second trash pick-up is necessary and will help cut the fly cycle to prevent further breeding and reduce the amount of flies in Mission Beach,” added Zapf.

Fly Summit Re-instituting a second weekly city summertime trash pickup and creating a Community Benefit District were ideas vetted by stakeholders and city officials at a Mission Beach “Fly Sum-

mit” held June 8. “This is the first – and hopefully our only – fly summit,” quipped John Vallas, a small-business owner and spokesperson for Beautiful Mission Beach, a nonprofit committed to MB's improvement. Hosted by Zapf, the summit brought together MB residents, businesses and city and government officials to discuss the significant – and intensifying – summer fly infestation problem. Olive Cafe owner Sarah Mattinson said she and other local restaurateurs are at a loss to figure out how else to combat the pesky insects in Mission Beach, which she said was described by one of her customers as “Fly City USA.” “In our mission statement it says our restaurant is cozy, but it's hard to be cozy when flies are disturbing you, and it's embarrassing from a business standpoint,” Mattinson said, noting she's tried everything from adding lighting and fans to locking trash receptacles. Mattinson said flies are hurting the

restaurant business in numerous ways: inviting bad Yelp reviews, discouraging customer patronage, causing food to be sent back and re-prepared or packaged to be taken out, all of which add to business costs. “My pest control bill has gone from $50 to $500 a month,” said Mattinson, adding, she's “done everything possible” to stem the problem. Mission Beach Town Council vice president Gary Wonacott said the beach community's fly infestation situation “has been worsening since 2010” adding he was told by a health inspector that “this was one of the worst fly infestation's they'd seen in an urban area.” A city effort to educate the community about ways to combat flies in 2015 “wasn't very successful,” said Wonacott. “We still had a huge fly infestation in spite of that,” he said, pointing out real progress won't be made until the source of the infestation, garbage, is adequately addressed.

did it seem to be focused around any notable landmarks. In some places, such as Morrell and Thomas streets, the smell is stronger, while in others it’s weaker. Some of the people at the meeting had been living with it for weeks, while others hadn’t noticed it at all. The technical term for the smell, as it turns out, is a BSO, or bad sewer odor. The city has a department dedicated to locating and eradicating BSOs, and they’ve been extremely helpful in dealing with the smell. Kristen has organized several meetings with city supervisors, and has called maintenance workers to the neighborhood on multiple

occasions, where they’ve done their best to find the source of the odor. Their efforts have yielded mixed results. One possible culprit is a string of defective manhole covers, and the city has approached the problem by sealing the manholes with asphalt and silicon. Though on some streets this does work, either partially or completely, Kristen reports that the smell around their property is as strong as ever. “It doesn’t feel like we’re at a dead end,” Kristen said. “The city has been very responsive, and they’re confident that with enough time, they can find the source of the issue.” And if anyone else smells a BSO outside their house? “Call,” Kristen said. “Being persistent means keeping them informed [about] an ongoing, chronic problem.”

Mission Bay High’s co-valedictorians and salutatorian have high hopes By DAVE SCHWAB Mission Bay High School's covaledictorians and salutatorian for 2016 all have a math and science bent; wanting to be a geneticist, a neurologist and a computer engineer/math teacher, respectively. Co-valedictorians Kyra Forsyth and Hannah Bloom, both of Pacific Beach, and salutatorian Dan Tran, of Mira Misa, talked recently about their school, their future plans and the state of the world in a far-ranging interview with Beach & Bay Press. All three students are presently busy drafting their required fiveminute speeches for the June 21 commencement at MBHS. Is that tough? “I wanted to make something that everyone could relate to, but not be super bored by,” said Forsyth adding “hopefully, they're going to laugh at. That was the hardest thing: making something funny so people would stay amused and entertained.” “It's hard to be inspiring this time of year,” noted Bloom, adding her speech will be “more along the lines of what to take from these past four years, especially the last two, while giving credit where it's due, to our teachers and those who helped us along the way.” “For my speech, what I wrote about was something we all have in common: self-procrastination,” said Tran. “So I wrote something about that, and linked it to how it could be used in the future.” All three MBHS grads are going to universities: Forsyth to UCLA, Bloom to Washington in St. Louis, and Tran to UCSD. Forsyth and Bloom had high praise for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program taught at MBHS and at Kate Sessions Elementary and Pacific Beach Middle in the

Mission Bay Cluster of the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD). “It's huge,” said Bloom of the IB Program. “It's transformed the reputation MBHS had when you know that La Jolla wants to become an IB school — and they can't.” “You're not just studying for the sake of taking a class, because the majority of classes are two years,” said Forsyth. “You also make a lot of connections (with classmates) to retain more knowledge.” “It helps connect people from around the world,” added Bloom of the IB Program. “It lets everybody learn the same things in a way that is more open-minded.” MBHS is a diverse school with lots of students bussed in from outside Pacific Beach. All three MBHS grads thought that was a big plus. Tran noted coming from elsewhere made MBHS a transition for him initially tough because, “I didn't know anyone.” Bloom said the socio-ethnic student population makes MBHS “an entirely different atmosphere than you would expect. You meet more people that help shape you in ways you don't expect.” As students in the information age, all three grads agree technology will continue to shape their futures. “As the saying goes, 'There's nowhere to go but up,” said Forsyth. “Technology is helping people con-

nect so much more. It's opening up more opportunities to people.” “My dad and I joked that there's more technology in our cell phones now than there was on the very first shuttle to the moon,” said Bloom. “Hopefully, we can use technology to fix things, like global warming,” said Tran. “Unfortunately, it (climate change) is on such a huge scale.” Asked what they're looking forward to most, Forsyth said, “The long-run plan is just to do something that makes me happy. If I'm happy – things will fall into place.” “If everything goes according to plan, I hope to get into a Ph.D program,” said Bloom. “My dream job is to work at NASA.” “I just want to live comfortably,” noted Tran. Concerning what they'll miss most about MBHS, Tran said, “My friends.” “My friends, and the sports teams,” said Forsyth. “The teachers,” said Bloom. “They're such an influence to us all.” Bloom confessed her belief that

Fleet Week Sea & Air Parade Returning to San Diego Sept. 10 BRE #01400985

The Fleet Week Sea & Air Parade returns to San Diego on Sept. 10 in a display of the Navy's sea service. The parade will run the length of San Diego Bay, beginning in Shelter Island with viewing areas all along the bayfront, from noon until 2 p.m. For the first time since 2008, amphibious ships, destroyers, Marine counter measure ships, submarines and ships from the Coast Guard as well as the Canadian Navy will participate. In addition there will be amphibious landing craft and demonstrations of SEAL capabilities, Coast Guard Search and Rescue, and a fly-over of Navy aircraft.

"This is the first one in eight years, so it's an event you won't want to miss." Many more activities are scheduled to accompany the Sea & Air Parade. On Sept. 10 and 11, Broadway Pier will host a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fair, ship tours, live music, food, static displays and more from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ship tours will be open from Sept. 10-14, also from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Broadway Pier and the B Street Pier.
