Pacific Beach Middle School was honored this week for its students’ extensive community service work. For the better part of the school year, eighth graders at the middle school have been engaged in civic learning and community service projects and were recognized by the state with the California Civic Learning Award of Distinction. “Their work and this award is a promise of a positive future,” said Michael McQuary, San Diego Unified School District Board of Education president. “Civic engagement is what it is all about for a solid foundation for an incredible future.” The Civic Learning Award is part of the Civic Learning Initiative and represents a commitment to developing complete civic literacy in students across the state of California. Pacific Beach Middle School is one of six schools in the state to receive the award. A panel of experts selected Pacific Beach Middle based on classes, clubs and programs that teach students about their role in the world and empower them to be model citizens. “We are ecstatic because these kids have worked so hard and are

Mayor Kevin Faulconer officially reopened Mission Beach seawall and boardwalk Thursday, May 26 continuing his pledge to invest nearly half a billion dollars this year into rebuilding and improving neighborhoods. The newly constructed walkway, splash wall and seawall took eight months and $4.9 million to complete. According to Faulconer, this is only the first step in a long-term project to rebuild Mission Beach. “Projects like this are how we are rebuilding for a better future across the city,” Faulconer said. On May 28 the Mission Beach boardwalk turned 91 years old and District 2 Councilwoman Lorie Zapf said she could not think of a better birthday present than the completion of the project just in time for Memorial Day weekend. The refurbished walkway was designed to emulate the look and feel of the original boardwalk. Even the new energy-efficient light posts are replicas from those on the original 1925 boardwalk. A major change to the walkways is that they no longer include a step down to the beach creating a fully flat surface with ADA access to the sand stone, something that was lacking in the previous boardwalk design.

Coastal residents discuss short-term vacation rentals at PB council By DAVE SCHWAB “If it doesn't fit, you must not permit,” quipped John Thickstun at Pacific Beach Town Council's May 18 meeting arguing against allowing short-term vacation rentals (STVRs) in residential neighborhoods. La Jolla attorney Thickstun and Pacific Beach resident Ronan Gray started Save San Diego Neighborhoods more than a year ago in response to the proliferation of shortterm vacation rentals in coastal communities' residential zones. Ever since, the men and their

grass-roots group, which has grown to about 1,000 supporters, have been lobbying for tighter controls over short term vacation rentals in single-family-zoned areas. It's a practice the neighborhood group claims is illegal and ought to be enforced. “We started this organization around someone's kitchen table, and we didn't think we'd still be here,” said Gray in opening remarks. “We need to address this issue of STVRs, which are taking over our neighborhoods.” Gray said his group is not opposed to people “sharing their own

homes” while they're there or “renting out their homes” while they're on vacation. “What really concerns us is this rise in online advertising by corporations who are coming in, buying apartments and homes, then basically turning them into minihotels,” he said. “STVRs are not allowed in residential zones,” claimed Thickstun, adding that putting them in the middle of residential areas “takes away your right to enjoy your home and peace and quiet. It's a profitable business. That's why they're expanding.” Thickstun gave a slideshow pre-

sentation showing late-night crowds, overflowing trash and vehicles illegally parked associated with the rentals. A map on one slide had colored dots indicating a widespread and growing pattern of the rentals in residential neighborhoods, not only in coastal communities but also citywide. From the audience, a couple of PB community activists gave their take on the situation. “The city's been ignoring us on STVRs,” said Marcie Beckett. “The only way to (curb them) is to shut them down. We have to elect the people that are going to do that.” “It's all about the money,” argued

It's a totally hypocritical situation.” One audience member, who operates a rental out of his PB residence, argued in favor of the practice. Hundreds come out for Gelson's grand opening By DAVE SCHWAB The line for opening day at the new Gelson's in Pacific Beach snaked around the block as scores turned out the morning of May 26 to be among the first 200 to collect a reusable shopping bag full of gifts. Walking through the doors, customers were personally greeted by employees lining the registers and aisles of the store at 730 Turquoise St., which previously was a Haggen's, and before that, an Albertsons. “We don't see turnouts like this usually,” said Rob McDougall, Gelson's president/CEO, in a brief address before Gelson's opened its doors. “It's our first store with our new décor package inside with all the bells and whistles.” McDougall noted about half of the employees from previous stores on the site had been retained. One of them is the PB Gelson's store director, Vince Payne. “If you're half as excited as I am – you're going to love this place,” Payne told the crowd outside before joining his crew inside to greet guests. Payne noted the exceptional turnout, while not a total surprise, was at “the high end of our expectations.” “America's finest city can now enjoy America's finest grocery store,” said James Cliame of the San Diego Chamber of Commerce. The first customer to purchase a product inside the new grocery store was Howard Singer, who said he got in line before 5 a.m. for the 9 a.m. store opening.

Singer said he'd been in other Gelson's stores seeded throughout Southern California, and talked about why he was visiting this one. “It's an upscale store and it's our only choice locally,” said Singer, a Bird Rock resident. Singer proudly said he was the last – and first – customer at another specialty grocery store, Trader Joe's, that changed locations on Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach a few weeks ago. Asked what makes Gelson's special, McDougall replied, “Our personal service, the quality of our food and the variety.” McDougall noted this was the seventh Gelson's to open in the region this year. He praised the clientele now being served. “I've always felt like we belonged in San Diego,” he said. “Beach customers to my mind are the most down to earth. They like to be outside. They like to barbecue. They like freshness and quality and healthy food aspects.” McDougall noted Gelson's acquired the Turquoise store from the Haggen grocery chain in November 2015. He said the store was completely gutted during the nearly six-month retrofit. “They didn't have a kitchen,” he said adding, “We had to create one.” The ribbon for the first Gelson's supermarket was cut in July 1951 in Burbank in the Los Angeles area. Romeo and Juliet are getting married By LAINIE FRASER In 2012, City Ballet of San Diego received standing ovations and endless praise for its performance of “Romeo and Juliet.” This year, the Pacific Beach-based ballet company’s final show ended with a surprise that shocked the audience and changed two performers' lives. Throughout the performance, the intricate costumes, set designs and acrobatics and the timeless love story amazed the audience. When the show came to an end, an act by Romeo, played by Stéphano Candreva, stole the show and the hearts of everyone in the room. At the end of the performance, with everyone lined up for their final bows, Candreva ran to take a prop offstage – or so everyone thought. In reality, Candreva had left to retrieve an engagement ring for his on- and offstage Juliet. Seconds later, Candreva returned and, on one knee, in front of a full

Community Neighbors band together to search for Miss Kitty in Pacific Beach By DAVE SCHWAB Laura Poveromo of Pacific Beach lost Miss Kitty, her precious white female cat, nearly six weeks ago and has been searching for her ever since via a variety of methods including Nextdoor and social media. To date, she's come across nearly every stray white feline in PB – except Miss Kitty. She even recently “met” Miss Kitty's near-twin, Jewell. Unfortunately, the “twins” turned out to be close, but not identical. “The big difference is Jewell has one blue and one yellow eye,” said Poveromo on Nextdoor. “Miss Kitty has yellow eyes. We are now aware there are like two to three other white cats roaming the same area as what we hope is also Miss Kitty.” Miss Kitty is a stray Poveromo adopted in Las Vegas and brought with her when she moved to San Diego. Her cat was last seen on Poveromo's first-floor balcony about 1 a.m. Wednesday, April 20. The kitty has medical issues so finding her quickly is paramount. “She's being treated for hypothyroid and taking meds, and without it she could get heart palpitations and will eat more,” Poveromo said. “That's the scary part, someone who may have found her may not know about the meds situation.” Poveromo added she hadn't had Miss Kitty microchipped and had removed her collar before she left. She added she's learned these two lessons from the experience thus far:

As individuals and as groups, the eighth-grade class completed a variety of community service projects that required research, funding and action. “This recognition is fantastic for our school, but it really means more for the students,” PBMS principal Kimberly Meng said. “They didn't just learn something in class; we asked them to reflect and take what they learned into the real world.” The students were able to focus on any cause that mattered to them. They had to make a proposal, complete the activity and then present something about the experience to the school. Two students developed a cellphone app to help people navigate the Tecolote Trails safely and with minimal damage to the land. Another worked with a Holocaust survivor to organize a remembrance assembly. Other groups

The search for Miss Kitty has been both extensive and intensive. Neighbors on NextDoor, at various times in recent weeks, have sighted her at 3742 Jewell St./La Playa. Meanwhile, another Nextdoor search is on for at least one other missing PB cat. Mary Dauteuil reports Rocky was taken from her home at Agate and Cass streets last August and has been missing since. Through research, one group learned that a majority of elementary school students learn how to use iPhones before they learn how to tie their shoes. This group designed cardboard shoes with laces and donated them to an elementary school as a tool for teaching the students how to tie their own shoes. “This is so wonderful that the kids were able to take issues that matter to them and truly make a difference and at such a young age,” said Joan Irion, associate justice on the San Diego-based Fourth District Court of Appeals. Aalaiziah Collins, a Pacific Beach Middle student, has been recognized by the school in the past for her commitment to community service. Sports Bucs tennis and volleyball teams improve By DAVE THOMAS With the school year just about over, a number of Mission Bay High spring sports teams have much to be proud of. On the boys volleyball court, the Bucs restarted their program this spring after there was no team the previous year. With only one starter having played indoor volleyball before, the focus of the season was to teach fundamentals of volleyball. As the only Division IV team in the Eastern League, which was composed of all Division II and III teams, the Bucs only played teams that were much higher-ranked and experienced during the season. However, the improvement over the season was remarkable in that the team was consistently winning games against some of the topranked Division II teams like University High. Due to the extremely hard league schedule, the team still almost qualified for the Division IV playoffs. According to head coach Nikki Caufield, with only one senior graduating this year, next year looks to return a squad of experienced players, with a number of incoming players for next year's program that should continue the base from this year.

Kieran Wills led the team in kills and aces and was named 2nd Team All-League. Senior Jefree Johnson led the team in blocks and will move on to play at Point Loma Nazarene next year. Junior first-year setter, Jacob Cayetano, topped the team in assists and digs. MBHS will also field a boys beach volleyball team for fall. Sand volleyball In girls’ sand volleyball play, head coach Brittany Johnson’s team had a strong finish to the season. Mission Bay made it to playoffs and had a bye in the first round. Then, Mission Bay beat San Dieguito in the quarterfinals and Francis Parker in the semifinals, respectively. The Lady Bucs (eight All-Stars, including five seniors), barely lost to The Bishop’s School in the finals, finishing second in the silver bracket or Division II. “I believe the program will still be strong next year with Alex Briski (junior), Maddie Tandy (junior), and Bethany Kepner (freshman) leading the pack,” Johnson commented. “All of the girls are such motivated athletes and I had the greatest time helping them maximize their sand vol-

leyball talent.” As Johnson sees it, she imagines the league will continue to grow and become increasingly competitive. “I have high hopes that Mission Bay will persist with a strong program and presence,” Johnson added.

Boys tennis On the boys tennis scene, head coach Trong Tong’s team finished with three wins, still allowing the Bucs to qualify for a Division III Team CIF playoffs spot based on the strength of schedule. Moreover, Mission Bay squeaked by Hilltop in the first round of the playoffs before succumbing to a superior Olympian team in the second round. “Our senior standout, Simon Glezer, dominated most of our league in singles and once again qualified for individual CIF for his third straight year,” Tong noted. “Shawn Ries had improved tremendously as a secondyear player as did our senior, Jacob Sapp, who had also shown more focus and dedication than ever. “With a majority of our team graduating this year, we'll have some rebuilding to do next season. To say it has been quite a journey in recent years for Mission Bay High grad Matt Bush would be an understatement. The former Buccaneer has dealt with more than his share of adversity, but that hasn’t stopped him from going after his goal of making it back to Major League Baseball. Bush, a former No. 1 overall draft pick (2004) by his hometown San Diego Padres, may have thought he’d never see a baseball diamond again after going to prison to serve a 3 ½-year sentence following a drunk driving offense. Well, the baseball diamond (not to mention the fans of the Texas Rangers) greeted Bush kindly last Friday evening in Arlington, Texas. Bush, called up by the Rangers after playing on their Double-A farm team in Frisco (Texas), pitched a perfect ninth inning in the team’s 5-0

loss to the visiting Toronto Blue Jays. Despite the Rangers losing on the field, the appearance of Bush on the mound was a win-win for both he and the hometown crowd. In comments to MLB.com, Bush, a former shortstop, noted it was a “dream come true” to be out on a Major League mound after what he had gone through in recent years halfway across the country in a Florida prison. While a career with his hometown team in San Diego never materialized, Bush would go on to stints in both Toronto and Tampa Bay, the last of which would lead to troubles off the field.

One bad decision In March of 2012, Bush was charged in Florida with DUI and departing an accident scene, an accident that seriously injured an elderly man. After a plea of no contest, Bush would be sentenced and

begin serving time behind bars. Getting another opportunity at a career in baseball, Bush has gone from Frisco to Arlington, with the goal of doing something positive with his life now that he has turned 30. His life off the field still includes a number of set requirements in order to play baseball, including being part of Alcoholics Anonymous, avoiding alcohol, and going without a driver’s license. As he told MLB.com following his appearance versus Toronto last week, he never again wants to be that person he was a few years back, drinking and ultimately having his freedom taken away from him. “I like myself sober,” Bush commented to MLB.com. “I’m living a dream, and I don’t want to stop.” For Bush, along with his personal and Mission Bay High family who’ve stuck by him, the only strikeouts they want are of opposing hitters.
