Sagan wins sprint finish in Mission Bay
By DAVE SCHWAB Ideally, Mission Beach would like to become a no-fly zone. Unfortunately, given its ideal breeding conditions, the beach community is presently a free-fly zone. Each summer, MB experiences a severe, filthy fly problem, with an overwhelming infestation of pesky flies negatively impacting residents, visitors, vacation rental agencies and businesses. Additionally, MB restaurants have chalked up more than 250 negative Yelp! restaurant reviews and a multitude of health department citations, largely attributable to the insect infestation.

PACIFIC BEACH–Greg Anderson passed away peacefully at home just days shy of his 85th birthday, surrounded by his wife Eve and his children. Greg grew up in Hazardville, CT, attended the University of Connecticut and fought in the Korean War. After graduating from the University of Arizona in Tucson, he worked as a Rehab Counselor for the State of California in San Diego. Greg was best know, however,
as the Coordinator of Gems, Minerals and Jewelry for the San Diego County Fair. Thousands of people benefited from his enthusiasm and knowledge over his 37 years as Coordinator, retiring in 2014. Today, his department presents museum-quality, competitive exhibits. He loved giving docent tours, sharing the beauty of the natural world–especially fluorescent minerals. He waited for the ooohs and aaahs, as the plain gray rocks glowed brilliantly when hit with ultraviolet lighting. Additionally, he was the owner of Anderson’s Fluorescent Minerals, dealing with collectors throughout the country. In 1981, he met Eve Smull, his soul-mate, at the Fair. He leaves his wife, Eve, sons Paul (Lisa) and Jay (Claudine) Anderson, step-children Steve Smull (Brenda) and Sally Smull (Jorge Parada); and three grand-children. He was buried at Miramar National Cemetary with military honors and a Celebration of Life was held at PB Chapel.

Ross said Bailey is too comfortable at home, one of many reasons why she brings him to Noah's. “He calms down when he comes here,” she said. “I come here for the food,” said Ross adding, “That's how I found out about this place.” “Most dogs like it here,” agreed Knight. “We give them treats. They like the energy in here.” Noah's is marking its 15-year anniversary with a party for patrons at the store on Saturday, May 21 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The celebration will include food and drink, pet food discounts, raffle prizes, vendor samples and dog adoptions. “All of our vendors have given us baskets for our raffle,” said Oshant. Knight said Noah's was originally just a pet wash, half its size now. A year or so ago, Knight and Oshant took their self-serve pet wash to the next level. “We inherited a pet wash with only a cash register and no products whatsoever,” Knight said, noting, “Liz and

Bike to Work Day in San Diego set for Friday Bike to Work Day is a national event celebrated annually on the third Friday in May as part of National Bike Month. Bike to Work Day San Diego will take place Friday, May 20. The local event is organized by
Bill Walton sculpture as large as his life A lifesize bronze sculpture of legendary San Diego athlete Bill Walton was unveiled Saturday, May 14 at Ski Beach Park in Mission Bay. Walton, a lifelong cycling enthusiast, is commemorated in bronze with his bicycle. The statue stands 6 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs 1,200 pounds. Alison Brown, the bronze sculptor who created the monument, took exact measurements of Walton’s bicycle, his shoes and other personal items. These were carefully replicated in the finished work, a life-size, highly detailed replica of the man himself. Walton led the UCLA Bruins to

Sports Mission Bay surfers catch that winning wave By DAVE THOMAS While you might mostly associate the spring sports season with baseball, softball, lacrosse or swimming, you’d be missing out on some great action if you did not know about the Mission Bay High School surf team. Led by head coach Greg Farrar, the Buccaneers have grown into quite the solid surfing program. “I revived the team as an advisor in the fall of 2011,” Farrar said. “I have always coached athletics at MBHS (19 years). “I have coached freshman and JV football my entire career. Also as alumni of MBHS, I coached JV baseball under Dennis Pugh for many years and coached the varsity for five years following his retirement. After baseball, I decided it would be a great time to revive the surf team.” As Farrar noted, “MBHS, Pacific and Mission beaches have always been a hotbed for surfers for decades, so I felt I'd like to tap into our student body to see if we could begin to build a winner (the team competes in Division IV of the Scholastic Surf Series).” The team season is a round-robin format. Mission Bay High surfs head to head against each team, each

contest. The top three male and female surfers in each heat move on to individual rounds in the afternoon of the contest. “This season, we finished second overall in our division, with a 3-1-1 record. We narrowly missed being champs by coming up short 60-55 to El Camino High School (4-0) in the season finale,” Farrar stated. “What I acknowledged real quickly was that surfers are talented in many areas,” Farrar went on to say. “Of the 16 male and female surfers on the team, 14 of them play at
least one additional CIF sport. “Many play baseball, girls volleyball, water polo, field hockey, lacrosse, swimming, tennis, and some participate in our outstanding music program. Also, many manage part-time jobs as well as a demanding academic course load. “Many of my surfers elect to take our most rigorous IB curriculum. On the baseball diamond, head coach Chad Starkey’s Buccaneers finish up the regular season at home on Friday, May 20 vs. Foothills Christian (3:30 p.m.) on Senior Day. According to Starkey, the Bucs were looking to win out this week and lock-up a last-minute playoff spot. In recent action, Mission Bay got its first win over rival La Jolla in three years with a 6-5 victory. “Looking back on my second year here at Mission Bay, I am pleased to see the growth and support within the program,” Starkey commented. “The core group of players is young but hungry to make their mark among the many other great Mission Bay teams. Keep your eye out for us to make some noise back
in the baseball world.”
Softball On the softball diamond, the Bucs under head coach Vince Ichihara were to meet Orange Glen this past Tuesday, May 17 in a CIF playoff game (after press time). Mission Bay made the playoffs with quality wins over Francis Parker, Montgomery, Southwest San Diego and second-ranked Calvin Christian in Division IV. According to Ichihara, key contributors this spring include sophomore pitcher Maya Cota, who has thrown just about every pitch on the mound this season for the team. Ichihara noted that Cota has been a quiet leader playing through injury and fatigue. Sophomore catcher Serena Castro has caught every game and every pitch this season, leading the squad in most offensive stats. Senior first baseman Savannah Tarbell is a leader on and off the
field, according to Ichihara. He noted that Tarbell is a great defender, while at 5 foot 10 inches tall; she gives the infield a big target not to mention a good stick at the plate. Sophomore third baseman Paige Parkhill is another quiet leader, who also has a good bat and good speed at the leadoff position to get the team going. Sophomore outfielder Hailey Matthews works really hard and has made plenty of defensive plays in the outfield that most players will not make, according to her head coach. Senior shortstop Hannah Bloom has been a staple for Mission Bay softball the last few years, controlling the defense. Que pasó? San Diego Taco Festival billboard pilfered in Pacific Beach San Diegans have endlessly searched for the region's best tacos. Now, one thief has his favorite Taco Man. On or about Friday, May 6, someone decided to help themselves to a billboard that was promoting San Diego Taco Fest placed at the corner of Mission Bay Drive and Garnet
Avenue in Pacific Beach. Taco Fest organizers and Outfront Media teamed up to create a unique campaign that included a Taco Man character having fun with unique taco sayings. The stolen billboard simply said “Eat me!” Other unique billboard sayings include “I can walk the guac,” “I'm tasty – deal with it” and
“I'm one tasty taco,” to name a few. Billboards promoting the event were placed around the county a few weeks ago. Outfront Media quickly replaced the pilfered PB billboard on May 14 with a different creative feature. "When Outfront Media developed the Taco Man and fun tag lines, we
certainly didn't take into account that someone might want this for their living room," said Tim Young, one of the Taco Fest organizers. "We would like to offer a reward for any information leading to the capture of the Taco Man bandit, which will include free tacos at San Diego Taco Fest."
San Diego Taco Fest will take place at Waterfront Park on Saturday, May 21. The festival will feature 20 of San Diego's best taco-centric restaurants, a line-up of local and national concert acts, live Lucha Libre wrestling matches and interactive experiences. Oh, and one less Taco Man!
Protesters ask SeaWorld to Empty the Tanks

Empty the Tanks is a worldwide protest and public awareness campaign against the cetacean captivity indus-
try. The activists are not demanding the release of all captive marine mammals into the wild, only the animals that might be great candidates for release. Those animals that are not good candidates for release should be retired into sea pens, according to the Empty the Tanks founder Rachel Carbary, where they can enjoy the rest of their days in natural

Mission Beach group files suit to stop condo project at former elementary school By DAVE SCHWAB A local nonprofit opposed to a developer's plans to construct 63 condos on two separate parcels on the former Mission Beach Elementary School site have filed a lawsuit challenging the City Council's approval of the project. Attorney Cory Briggs May 10 filed the lawsuit on behalf of Mission Beach Citizens for Responsible Development. On April 11, overriding concerns
about traffic, parking and alteration of Mission Beach's character, San Diego City Council voted 6-2 in favor of the condo project, which had previously been unanimously approved by the city Planning Commission. The lawsuit maintains project opponents have “exhausted administrative remedies” while arguing that “the public will suffer irreparable harm” as a result of developers alleged “violations of applicable laws.” The crux of the suit is the contention that an environmental
impact report required by the California Environmental Qualities Act (CEQA) for the project was inadequate. “The project’s EIR,” the suit says, “fails to provide adequate identification and analysis of traffic, parking and transportation, air quality, community character, noise and cumulative impacts. … the EIR fails to provide adequate identification and analysis of measures to mitigate the project's significant adverse environmental impacts and fails to elim-
inate or substantially reduce all such impacts. … The project's approval will result in increased traffic and the demand for parking in a location that already suffers from too much traffic and too little parking.” Briggs declined comment on the lawsuit other than to say, should it go to court, there's only a slight chance that could happen this year. “It's unlikely to go to court,” Briggs said, noting project opponents remain open to negotiations with developer McKellar McGowan.
“We'll probably be sitting down with them in the not-too-distant future,” he added. McKellar McGowan is proposing a total of 20 buildings housing 63 individual units in a mix of duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes and one single-family residence on the site at 825 Santa Barbara Place. City attorney candidates debate at Pacific Beach Middle By DAVE SCHWAB Four of five candidates running for city attorney in November to replace termed-out Jan Goldsmith crossed swords at a May 11 Pacific Beach public forum, tackling hotbutton issues like short-term vacation rentals (STVRs) and homelessness. All four Democrat candidates — Mara Elliott, Bryan Pease, Gil Cabrera and Rafael Castallanos — were present. The lone Republican in the race, Robert (Bob) Hickey, was not. In opening remarks, Chief Deputy City Attorney Elliott, a 22-year law veteran, claimed to be the race's “insider,” noting she knows how things work at City Hall. “I've got a
lot of experience in auditing specializing in operational effectiveness and saving money,” she said. “I can't stress the importance of this office. It requires experience in just about everything.” If elected, Elliott would become the city's first female city attorney. “This is the most important office nobody knows about,” said Cabrera. “We need a lawyer with the highest ethics. It will be a priority of mine to work to increase the transparency of the office.” Animal-rights activist and attorney Bryan Pease saw the city attorney's role somewhat differently, casting himself as the race's populist candidate. “I'm the only candidate here who
has a judgment against the city in both civil and criminal cases,” said Pease, who's defended the harbor seals' presence at La Jolla's Children's Pool. “The city attorney needs to enforce the law but always stand for the public's interest.” Castellanos, a land-use lawyer and a Port commissioner, argued that “The city for decades has not had an attorney representing it in the core areas of infrastructure, finance and real estate development.” He added his experience as a transactional attorney will allow him to ensure that the city “doesn't make another bad deal” like the (previous) Chargers ticket guarantee. On STVRs and whether they're
allowed under current law, all four candidates agreed it's a real problem needing revision. But their take on the required changes varied. “There's nothing in the municipal code allowing minihotels in neighborhoods,” said Elliott, who's been endorsed by Save San Diego Neighborhoods, lobbying to remove STVRs from single-family neighborhoods. “We need to make sure all the codes and regulations are being followed,” said Pease. “But we also have a responsibility to protect the property rights of those who are doing things legally and are good for the community.” “We need to become more creative in solving the problem,” said
Cabrera. “There's a balance that needs to be struck,” said Castellanos, adding, “We need better enforcement of STVRs that are illegal under the municipal code.” On homelessness, the candidates had their own takes and what needs to be done to resolve the issue. “At the Port, we addressed chronic homelessness on the waterfront with outreach to the homeless population,” said Castellanos. “We matched them with wrap-around services, which is critical.” “It's a complex issue with drug and alcohol problems and mental instability,” said Elliott. “We need to work together better to try and resolve this.”

nizing Committee, and Amgen worked together to make the event happen with as few issues as possible. “Our success is measured by the community outreach and response, and I am proud to say this was an absolute success,” said Ed Clancy, chairman of the San Diego Tour of California Local Organizing Committee. Through sign-up sheets outside popular businesses, print and online advertising and a variety of media commercials and fan engagement, more than 300 volunteers gathered to give their time on Sunday. “It was an incredible weekend for San Diego and particularly the Mission Bay area,”
said Kim Merrill, spokesperson for the San Diego Tour of California Local Organizing Committee. Clancy says he is fortunate that Mayor Kevin Faulconer is as interested in sports as he is and says he cannot thank the community members – from all around the county – enough for doing their part. “We are a grassroots system, and it was through community engagement events and a genuine interest by residents that we were able to pull this off,” Clancy said. The volunteers arrived at 6 a.m. the morning of the race and set up barricades, closed lanes, facilitated traffic, escorted racers and went door to door handing out fliers and informing residents of the event. “A lot of the volunteers sim-
Community ply love San Diego and love volunteering,” Clancy said. “They were given a behind the scenes look at an event, which a lot of people were excited about, but I think most of these people just love the community.” Initial planning for the event began roughly two years ago. The route for the race and the roles for the volunteers were finalized in November of last year. The last two months prior to the race were described by Clancy as “madhouse crunch time” and were spent finalizing details and fully preparing the volunteers. Part of this preparation took place at an orientation earlier in May that pressed safety as the number one concern for the Local Organizing Committee.
