By DAVE SCHWAB San Diego City Council unanimously voted last month to reimburse $1.2 million for the already completed restoration of the city-owned portion of Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach. Crystal Pier Hotel and cottages co-owner Bill Allen said the pier refurbishment project, completed a few weeks ago, was the product of four years of efforts to find the money — and the political will — to get the pier’s deteriorating pilings repaired. “They (staff) had to submit the contract to the City Council to approve the funding for it,” said Allen. “In the meantime, we put up the front money to do the (repair) work, while the city went through the process of getting funding approved.”

By DAVE SCHWAB A new era was ushered in at Mission Bay High School on April 16 as more than 1,400 black-and-gold-clad students joined the principal, athletes, alumni, parents and community VIPs in dedicating the school’s new stadium, softball field, upgraded baseball field and athletic facilities. The Navy Color Guard from Naval Medical Center kicked off the stadium dedication ceremony, during which school principal Ernie Remillard commented, “I’m honored to welcome everyone to celebrate the grand opening of the stadium, softball and baseball fields.” As a student athlete himself, Remillard said he’d

Man pleads guilty in Mission Bay meth selling case By NEAL PUTNAM The alleged ringleader in a 2013 drug operation in Mission Bay pleaded guilty April 17 to three counts of possession of methamphetamine for sale and one count of selling methamphetamine. Jason Morgan Boone, 42, of San Diego, was among nine arrested in June of 2013 following an undercover investigation with San Diego police and the Drug Enforcement Administration. “Pacific Beach’s Crystal Pier is an iconic landmark and popular vacation destination,” said Councilmember Lorie Zapf, whose District 2 covers Pacific Beach. “The city is investing in structural improvements to not only enhance the safety of the pier but to allow the pier to be enjoyed by millions of visitors and locals for years to come.” The final $750,000 authorized by the council paid for repair and replacement of damaged or deterio-

rating portions of the pier, including timber piles, pile caps, joists and bracing on the city-owned sections of the pier. The hotel funded repairs and construction for its portion of the pier. The restoration project used “inkind” replacement materials to preserve the aesthetics of the pier. Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach is known as one of the best piers in California to fish for barred surfperch, walleye surfperch, shovelnose guitarfish and California halibut.

San Diego Mission Bay Boat and Ski Club is celebrating its 75th anniversary on Sunday, April 26. Billed as the “oldest boat club in San Diego,” the club, located at 2606 North Mission Bay Drive, is less than one mile from the Clairemont Drive exit down past Mission Bay Golf Course. There will be food, drink and entertainment along with awards, recognitions and appearances by past commodores and the group's group historian. The members-only club, operated and maintained mostly by volunteers, has a staff that includes three bartenders, an accountant, a galley chef and a lawn mower. “We are a big family, and we are looking to increase our membership,” said club member and spokeswoman Susie Byrnes. “This month, we are waiving the $300 membership fee. Monthly dues are low, and you don't have to own a boat to be a member.” The club’s purpose is to provide education, skill and knowledge of boating and water sports, relaxation, entertainment and pleasure to its members.

The San Diego Mission Bay Boat and Ski Club is dedicated to promoting the City of San Diego as a recreational center and to contribute to the support of such charitable institutions as designated by its governing board. Byrnes’ husband Scott, one of nine club board members, noted the organization started out as the San Diego Speedboat Club on San Diego Bay. Noah's Natural Pet Market expands, to celebrate grand reopening May 2 By NICOLE SOURS LARSON Gift basket raffles, vendor giveaways, special merchandise discounts, healing therapy demonstrations and a barbecue by Homegrown Meats of La Jolla are just some of the activities offered Saturday, May 2 at Noah's Natural Pet Market as the shop marks its official reopening following a major expansion. Pacific Beach-based Frosted Faces Foundation, the beneficiary of raffle proceeds, will also offer senior dog adoptions. The celebration will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The community-oriented pet market, located at 4431 Cass St. in Pacific Beach since 1997, sells a wide variety of high-quality pet food, treats, supplements and accessories, rarely available in big box stores. They also offer two tubs for do-ityourself washes for dogs and cats. "We only carry what we know are trustworthy products for dogs and cats, mostly from family or privately owned companies producing their own food with ethical and reliable sourcing, companies such as The Honest Kitchen, SmallBatch, Animal Essentials and Horizon," explained co-owner Mary Knight, a trained nutritionist. Most of the pet foods, whether frozen raw food, dehydrated, canned or kibble, are produced in North America, with all ingredients nonGMO, documented and traceable, and nothing originating in China.

Knight and co-owner Liz Oshant, who purchased the business in 2001, monitor the ingredients in the foods they sell as well as changes in the products' or manufacturers' reputations. "We grill the sales reps and ask all the hard questions before we bring a product into the store. If they can't answer our questions to our satisfaction, we won't carry it," Knight said. And, Oshant added, if a pet food company is sold to a large-scale commercial manufacturer or conglomerate or if the quality falls below their standards, they quickly pull products from the shelves. Knight, Oshant and store manager Maegan Turnquist are excited about the expansion, which more than doubled their retail space and enabled them to create a special section just for cats. When the adjoining shop became available earlier this year, Knight and Oshant jumped at the opportunity for expansion. Noah's had long suffered from cramped quarters and needed additional space for more products.

New also is the 600-square-foot Noah's Wellness Sanctuary. "We've always wished for a space where we can offer educational programs, rescue group adoptions, puppy training and holistic healing therapy sessions," Oshant said. The shop started life as a dogwash and, after Oshant and Knight took over, rapidly expanded into carefully screened premium pet foods, treats and supplements. Noah's staff regularly provide advice to pet parents concerned over the quality of their pets' nutrition. The business took off following the pet food recalls of 2007, when consumers began scrutinizing what pet food manufacturers were incorporating into their food. As small companies entered the pet food market, Noah's expanded their lines of new, more healthful frozen, freeze-dried and dehydrated raw food as well as grain-free canned and dry foods. With the added space, they plan to expand their product lines with more food and pet accessories.

Few family-owned restaurants in San Diego can claim they’ve been around since before man walked on the moon. The Venetian Restaurant in Point Loma is among them, opening four years prior, in 1965, when the kitchen served plates of spaghetti for 85 cents and baked up whole pizzas for $1.25. Fifty years later, founder Vince Giacalone still drops in regularly to dine with his wife Carmella, usually after 5:30 p.m. Mass on Saturdays. Since retiring, he’s passed the torch to his sons Joey and Frank, who have ushered the restaurant into the 21st century with new dishes, a full redesign and brisk delivery service. The longstanding recipes for pizza dough and red sauces, however, haven’t changed. “Those are my father’s, the untouchables,” says Joey, adding that dishes such as chicken cacciatore and veal Parmesan have also remained firmly planted on the menu for the past five decades. The Venetian was originally located at 2910 Canon St. before moving in 1973 to its current location at 3663 Voltaire St., where it continued blossoming as a destination Italian restaurant. Through the years, both dining rooms have seen the likes of singers Frankie Laine and Barry White as well as famed author Joseph Wambaugh and players from the San Diego Chargers. “More so,” says Joey, “we’ve witnessed so many families come in with their kids over the past decades, and now those children are calling us up saying they’d like to have their wedding rehearsal dinners at the restaurant.” Vince, a first-generation American of Sicilian parents, served as an Army cook in the Korean War and first tried his hands at opening a bakery in San Diego. “But he was miserable,” says Joey. “It wasn’t for him.” SEE VENETIAN, Page 12

Princen said he and his wife are well acquainted with sports retail and they were looking for a space with just the right “fit,” which they found at Play It Again in PB. “The owner retired, so when it came up on the market it was a nobrainer,” said Princen adding, “The bottom line is, everybody knows the stores in PB and La Jolla. This is the store that all the locals go to first. Play It Again and its business model continues to be a winning combination. Princen pointed out his sports retail shop offers thrifty locals, or tourists here for just a short time, an unparalleled opportunity to save money. He pointed out, for example, that a tourist here for a month can come in and buy a used bike, then “recycle” it when they’re ready to leave by reselling it via the store’s buyback program. “We always say recycle, reuse, replay,” said Princen. Several residents in Pacific Beach, one of the areas most impacted by the recent proliferation of STVRs, turned out to speak. Brian Curry, chair of Pacific Beach Planning Group, said he thinks the issue comes down to zoning and semantics. “If it’s not in the code, then it’s permitted,” said Curry, noting STVRs should be classified as “visitor accommodations,” a category that includes hotels and motels. Curry said he felt what needs to be done is to “change the wording” in the city’s municipal code to reflect that STVRs are actually “visitor accommodations,” defined as properties rented out for less than a month. “The irony is, STVRs are included with visitor accommodations when it comes to taxes, but they are not included with visitor accommodations when it comes to zoning,” Curry said. “How can that be?”

Rose Creek clean-up is not for wimps From shopping carts to couches, annual event hauls out big items By DAVE SCHWAB Nonprofit groups Friends of Rose Creek and I Love A Clean San Diego are looking for creek lovers and community volunteers to assist in the annual clean-up of Rose Creek in Pacific Beach on Saturday, April 25. Participants should link up at Mission Bay High School, 2475 Grand Ave., at 9 a.m., wearing closed-toe shoes, long pants and sleeves and hats and be ready to search Rose Creek and environs for trash to take to the dump. “I’m just back from the creek, and we have plenty of trash that needs to be hauled out of our creek and salt marsh,” said Karin Zirk, a member of Friends of Rose Creek. She noted, “I saw a love seat, a full-size mattress plus plenty of smaller trash items.” Zirk said this is “no wimpy beach clean-up: this is a job for teamwork, little red wagons and sturdy shoes.” The Friends of Rose Creek has participated in I Love A Clean San Diego’s Creek to Bay Clean-up for 10 years, which has made a difference. “The amount of trash has significantly diminished thanks to the hard work of 1,000 or more volunteers over the years,” said Zirk. Zirk said volunteers at creek clean-ups used to be able to fill a 40yard roll-off dumpster in an hour with 20 volunteers. “Now, it takes us three hours and 75 volunteers to utilize 50 to 70 percent of the roll-off capacity,” she said. “When people see a clean creek, they are less likely to dump their trash. Jazz on the Green at Mission Bay High School this Saturday By BART MENDOZA Thankfully, there are quite a few good music programs in city schools, but nothing quite compares with that of Mission Bay High School. Under the direction of JP Balmat,

the school’s program has seen its students touring and recording on a national level, with a trip to New Orleans and expansion of their choir and orchestra programs set for 2016.

Starting at noon, listeners will be treated to performances from the Euphoria Brass Band, the MBHS Preservationists and Abstrack (a MBHS alumni jazz ensemble), with a closing set from the MBHS Jazz Ensemble. If you’re a music fan, this concert is a wonderful opportunity to take in great sounds while also helping make music education possible in our community.

Peter Sprague • Themed concert nights seem to be all the rage of late. Rarely less than interesting, when it’s the right mix of subject and performer, the evening can be magic. Such will be the case on April 23 at Dizzy’s, when guitarist Peter Sprague performs a special tribute

Also needed are men’s socks, men’s underwear, men’s pants (32-34 medium), small fruit cups and individual peanut butter, snack bars, juice and water.

Among the most recent additions to the menu are Mediterranean scallops bathed in butter, olive oil, basil, tomatoes and lemon juice. Topped with bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese, the scallops are sourced fresh from Pacific shellfish and appear in several other dishes. Miss Mission Beach San Diego was organized for the purpose of bringing awareness to the adaptive sports community of San Diego County. Each year, hundreds of physically challenged children and adults are in need of support in order to remain active and live healthy, happy lives.
