Bucs making a pitch to reach CIF playoffs By DAVE THOMAS When it comes to making a push for the CIF playoffs, both the Mission Bay High baseball and softball teams are hoping to punch their tickets in the next few weeks. On the baseball diamond, the Bucs, under head coach Chad Starkey, sported an 8-9 record (0-3 Western League) heading into action this week. To date, the Bucs have been led by the likes of senior Jake Casson (pitcher/right field), sporting four wins on the mound (38 Ks) while leading the team in RBIs; senior left fielder and captain Tim Daly (big part of team, heading to TCU for college); senior outfielder Eliagha Lewis (leads team in batting average and runs scored to date); and junior captain and shortstop Joey Witkowski (leads team in on-base-percentage, including in the Western League). “Our goals are still to return to the playoffs again this year and continue to bring baseball back to where it once was when I played under Coach Pugh,” Starkey commented.

Softball In girls softball action, the Bucs, under head coach Vince Ichihara, came into play this week with a record of 5-8. According to Ichihara, the girls are “battling really hard this season, having two rivalry league games go nine innings against La Jolla and
University City.” Although Mission Bay came back in both games and lost, Ichihara noted that the team never quit. Mission Bay has had a couple of really good wins, including a 14-3 win over Southwest High School and a 14-5 victory over Montgomery High.

giving his customers a square deal. “If I see a car that I think is terminal, I'll tell them, 'Don't put money in this car,'” Walters said, adding, “I'll be the first one to shoot myself in the foot. We're here to make money. But I also want to be fair and use my expertise to help people make good, informed decisions on where to spend their money. If I see a car leaking oil in six places and the driveshaft's broken and the bumper is busted, to fix this car properly, to make it safe: It's not money well spent.” A PB resident himself, who lives a few blocks away from his business that he walks or rides his bike to daily, Walters is proud of his “beachy” auto repair shop. Fitting in with its location and clientele, Coastal Auto offers free local concierge service, including pick-up and delivery with a loaner car, bicycles parked out front of the shop or shuttle service. A Pennsylvania transplant, Walters said he came out here original-

Asked if operating an auto repair shop is easier today than it's been in the past, Walters answered, “Harder.” Why? “Customers can go on YouTube and watch a video and learn how to fix their car,” Walters said, adding, “The customer is much better informed today." Good news for car owners is that their vehicles are lasting longer. If you take care of them properly, Walters noted, an owner should expect to get 150,000 to 200,000 miles out of a vehicle on average. He offered this advice on how best to extend a car's longevity. “Just perform routine maintenance according to the manufacturer's scheduled maintenance chart,” Walters said. “It's best to go by that.” Gazing into his crystal ball, Walters likes what he sees in his auto repair shop's future. “At the end of the day, people need their cars to get to work and all the other places they need to go,”

Community PB Kiwanis Club celebrates 70th anniversary A group of businessmen who wanted a service organization started the club in the winter of 1946. Kiwanis Clubs of La Jolla and Ocean Beach jointly sponsored it, and the official charter date was April 8, 1946. The first meeting place for the club was the Women’s Club of Pacific Beach. The club remained there for several years and then met at the Catamaran, Pernicano’s Pizza House, the Old Ox, the Mission Bay Golf Club and currently meets at the Broken Yolk Café (on Garnet Avenue) since 2000. One of the first fundraisers was a members talent show at the Women’s Club and was a community sell-out. The apple fundraiser was a tradition of the club for many years. Apples were shipped from Washington by the case and delivered the last Thursday in October. A spaghetti dinner was the next traditional fundraiser, held at Pernicano’s restaurant on the last Thursday in April beginning in 1962. Kiwanians sell tickets and help prepare the meal. In 2012, the apple fundraiser was replaced by a second spaghetti dinner at Pernicano’s in the fall. Pacific Beach Kiwanis has been a landmark organization and part of Pacific Beach history. Its members are community residents, business owners and local educators. Kiwanis and Soroptimist are now the only active service clubs in Pacific Beach since both the Lions club and the Rotary Club have closed operation.
What are they doing now? Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students in the world. Currently, Pacific Beach Kiwanis sponsors a Key Club at Mission Bay High School and a Builders Club at Pacific Beach Middle School. The student members assist in service projects, including washing dishes during the spaghetti dinner. PB Kiwanis sponsors the MBHS athletic programs by a donation of $1,700 for spring awards. The third Thursday of the month, students from Kate Sessions Elementary, Barnard Asian Pacific Language Academy and Pacific Beach Elementary receive the Kiwanis Student of the Month award. It’s a community collaboration between Kiwanis, Allstate Pacific Beach (on Lamont Street), Broken Yolk Café and Beach & Bay Press to honor students for their leadership, being a role model and contributing to their community in and out of their classroom. Each year, the club dedicates one meeting in May for Hope of America awards. Students, parents and principals from the five elementary schools in Pacific Beach are guests at a breakfast meeting. Ten students are recognized each year for outstanding achievements. It’s Kiwanis' hope to spark a lifelong effort of accomplishment and leadership. Two to four scholarships of $1,000 each are awarded every year in June to graduating seniors from MBHS. The club had been the
host at MBHS for the annual Kiwanis Basketball Tournament in December of each year. This was the longest continuous high school tournament in California, which began in 1946 and is hosted at four school sites. Kiwanis is also contributing $1,000 to baseball boosters at MBHS for a new batting cage facility.
Upcoming events Kiwanis is planning for its inaugural fundraising golf tournament at Mission Bay Golf Course on Friday, May 6. Kiwanis is supporting Key Club at Miracle Mile of Quarters with Children’s Hospital on Saturday, May 7. This annual fundraiser has benefited Rady Children’s Hospital since 1965. “Kiwanis,” reads the group’s mission statement, “is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world, one child and one community at a time.” Kiwanis of Pacific Beach seeks to strengthen and build the community and serve the children of Pacific Beach as well. The club could always use more members, businesses and volunteers. Be a part of something positive; give back to the community and have fun doing it. High School. Albion SC Pros has tapped into the local passion for futbol by playing home games on the Buccaneers' pitch with a fun, festive family-friendly atmosphere. Beach & Bay Press caught up with the club’s director of marketing and operations, Nick Surface, for a recent Q&A: BBP: How long has Albion soccer been around, and are there members of the club from Pacific Beach and Mission Bay involved? Nick Surface: Albion Pros is in its first year and is the professional team that sits atop the Albion SC Youth Club. The youth club has been based in Ocean Beach for the last 35 years and has players and families that live all over San Diego, including PB and Mission Bay. The Albion Pros team has players who live in PB such as standout forward Matt Clare. Other players come from as far away as the Netherlands, Haiti and Brazil, but most players are from the San Diego area. The team plays their games on Saturday nights at Mission Bay High School Stadium at 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $3 for 17 and under and free for children under 5. The whole game is an experience that starts at the Tap Room on Garnet Avenue at 3 p.m. Our supporters group, called The Deep End, meets there beforehand along with our fans to have beers and get excited for the match. At the game, there is Mexican food, chair massages, plenty to do for kids and an electric atmosphere as our fans sing and chant the entire game (much like you see in Europe). Afterwards, the whole team, including players, coaches and front office staff, head back to the Tap Room to hang out with fans and (hopefully) celebrate another win. Our last home game of the season is June 18, and the playoffs will start the second week of July. If things go well, we could be playing until the national cham-

NS: We are currently a perfect 3-0 and sit atop the division in first place. So far, so good. We are very happy with the direction the team is going. We are always trying to increase our performance, as would be expected, but we are doing well. BBP: Are tryouts held for locals during the year? NS: Tryouts are held generally before the pre-season in December and January, but we welcome players to try out throughout the year if they feel they have what it takes. Players interested should email me at nsurface@albionsoccer.org. BBP: For soccer fans in the area, what makes coming out to see the team play so enjoyable? NS: We really put on a production at every game. We understand that San Diego is an amazing place to live and has so much to do, so we put on more than just a soccer game. The game is of course the main event, but there are a lot of things to do at games. We have a great choice of food as well as face painters, balloon men and giveaways every single week. There is halftime entertainment and festivities before and after the game at Tap Room. The atmosphere at the games really is something special and not something you’ll get at any other professional sport in San Diego. That is a big statement to make but we would stand by it. While we don’t have 60,000 fans, the 2,000-plus we do have are passionate and loud in their support and it is constant. There are drums banging and flags waving to go along with songs and chants. It truly is something special to see and experience.

Jewish ancestry, the death of her father on the Russian front and, later, her son's schizophrenia as well as her own account of surviving a mastectomy. Now, she's trained her shutter onto another fringe group: Pacific Beach's homeless population. “I'm changing my whole outlook on life,” said Kanemoto of her new photographic passion, chronicling the lives of people living in the shadows on the streets of PB. “Every single one of these people, I've fallen in love with all of them.” The photographer of 40 years talked about that “first” encounter with a homeless person about five years ago. “I took a walk every morning at the boardwalk, and one day I found a man, Tommy, from Chicago, sitting there crying like a baby,” she said, noting that getting to know him was an eye-opening and transformative experience. “He was so heavy into drugs that, at age 17, he'd killed somebody and was put into prison,” she said. “After he got out on good behavior… that's when the heavy drinking started. I talked to him, and he introduced me to others.” Tommy's story is a sad and tragic one, said Kanemoto, noting “as many as 85 percent of the people out on the streets are mentally ill, with some coming from terrible homes where both parents took drugs.”
Thumbing through a portfolio of her most recent work capturing the plight – and indomitable spirit – of the beach homeless, one can't help but be moved by the insight and clarity of Kanemoto's vision. “I've gotten initiated – and I'm proud of it,” the photographer said of her entry into PB homeless society, where she is affectionately known as Grandmother by many. “I feel very motherly,” she said. “This is my gang.” Thumbing through her portfolio, her finger stops on Birdman and then on a gentleman who was once a pastor and is now going through alcohol rehab. Kanemoto said it's surprising how much the homeless, even those who are mentally ill, can respond to expressions of openness and warmth.
“I've taken their pictures and talked with them about their families,” said Kanemoto, noting one of her newfound friends, a man, “has 11 kids.” Another homeless woman Kanemoto knows smiles even though she no longer has any teeth. “I find that so endearing,” she noted. Kanemoto spoke of another homeless friend's account of how he became a street person. “He said one day he prayed to God for guidance, and God told him, 'Sell all your belongings, give up your studio and follow Me,’ which he did. He sold everything he owned, joined the homeless and became homeless himself.” Today, Kanemoto said that same man can be seen preaching Sunday nights in a local church. “It's inspiring to me,” she said. “It changes my outlook on things.” In the introduction to her blog, which can be found at homelessofpacificbeach.wordpress.com/, Kanemoto writes, “I feel the responsibility to help those who are rejected by society. With this documentary, I created a portrait of people who are feared and ignored. I'm trying to shed light on their shadowy world as an observer, a friend and participant in the drama of their lives. I focus on the individual with the intent to show the dignity and goodness inherent in every human being and give thought to what brought my new friends into their present situation. I dedicate this to all my homeless friends.”

Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup this weekend I Love A Clean San Diego anticipates 6,000 volunteers to register for this year’s event, happening on Saturday, April 23, from 9 a.m. to noon at 107 locations. Register for I Love A Clean San Diego’s signature event, the Creek to Bay Cleanup, at CreekToBay.org. The event’s tagline, Your Neighborhood, Our Environment, encourages volunteers to sign up for a site in their neighborhood to contribute to the health and beauty of the entire region. A complete list of cleanup sites and volunteer registration are available at CreekToBay.org. In 2015, more than 5,500 volunteers removed 187,000 pounds of debris during the three-hour
event. I Love A Clean San Diego will host a record number of 107 sites countywide while strengthening community partnerships in Logan Heights, Escondido and 4S Ranch. While trash removal is a large focus of the event, volunteers will also contribute their time to beautification projects including native planting projects and graffiti removal. These beautification projects restore local outdoor areas and evoke a strong sense of community pride across the county. I Love A Clean San Diego focuses its attention on inland communities (82 sites) wherein 80 percent of marine debris originates. I Love A Clean San Diego invites volunteers to take the Bring Your
Own Reusables pledge when they register at CreekToBay.org. When volunteers bring their own reusable water bottle, work gloves and bucket to collect litter, they help divert thousands of single-use bags and disposable gloves from San Diego’s crowded landfills. Building upon the momentum of Earth Month, I Love A Clean San Diego has launched its first matching campaign. All funds raised will be matched up to $25,000 and will be used to further energize volunteer cleanup efforts.
