What SeaWorld’s shift means for its San Diego park By LISA HALVERSTAD, Voice of San Diego SeaWorld, a company that’s been floundering since the controversial documentary “Blackfish,” is making a sea change. SeaWorld CEO Joel Manby announced March 17 that the company will halt killer whale breeding, end its theatrical orca shows and dou-
ble down on conservation and rescue efforts. And it’s partnering with a longtime adversary, the Humane Society, to do it. All signal a massive shift for one of San Diego’s top employers and taxpayers. The company that’s long been synonymous with Shamu will eventually be without its headline attraction.
“This decision today is so monumental for us,” Manby said in a call with reporters March 17. “A lot of people don’t realize how difficult it is, even internally it is, for us to make this change.” Indeed, the company contested the state Coastal Commission’s demand last year that it halt orca breeding in SEE SEAWORLD, Page 2

exchange for the regulator’s approval of a new orca enclosure at SeaWorld San Diego. Now, it’s changing course. Here are some takeaways on what the movement means for one of San Diego’s most influential companies –
and for San Diego. SeaWorld’s new approach means it also needs new, dynamic attractions. SeaWorld’s carved out a niche for itself as a marine-animal park with some rides and an animal you can’t see elsewhere: the killer whale. It’s long said the orca is a key reason people visit.

News The park’s new strategy means SeaWorld San Diego should retain the orcas it has for at least a couple decades and will display them in a new way. Rather than hold theatrical shows, it’ll feature them in a more natural setting where visitors can watch them hunt and play and learn about their plight in the wild. Theme-park experts previously told me a shift like this would help acknowledge changing public notions about holding orcas in captivity. But they’ve also suggested SeaWorld needs to come up with an attraction that replaces the orcas or risk future struggles. “My feeling is that they would lose their key point of differentiation,” UCLA business professor Jason Snyder said in 2014. “They’re starting to become closer to an amusement park and a zoo, and one can get those experiences at other competitors, probably better.” Manby acknowledged as much on March 17. Lessons about animal welfare and marine wildlife won’t resonate with families for an entire day, he said: “You have to balance it.” Manby suggested adding more rides could help and late last year said he planned to shift some money toward a yet-to-be-announced attraction in San Diego. But SeaWorld’s current agreements with the city limit the possibilities. The city’s SeaWorld lease and master plan require that at least 75 percent of its attractions contain a significant educa-
tion or animal-conservation focus, and many San Diegans have long opposed the idea of a ride-heavy theme park on Mission Bay. SeaWorld’s following in zoos’ footsteps. Decades ago, many zoos hosted theatrical shows similar to the ones SeaWorld’s emphasized. Shows featuring chimpanzees or elephants performing human-like high jinks were popular when SeaWorld was founded in 1964. Zoos scaled back on the shows, and more recently, many have also gotten rid of their large, lovable elephants amid concerns about their welfare and often relatively small enclosures. In the face of intense “Blackfish” blowback, SeaWorld has stuck with the shows and its orcas – until now. Manby said SeaWorld’s making the change because it’s realized public perceptions have changed. It’s also conducted studies to gauge visitor interest in more educational approaches. “The guests just want to observe and learn, and we don’t need all these ‘theatrical tricks,’” he said. Manby said the company’s decision to shift away from orca shows could foreshadow changes to those featuring dolphins and other animals too. “We are definitely going to look at how this executes, and we’re definitely going to learn from it,” Manby said. I asked Jeffrey Hyson, a professor at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia who’s spent years researching the history of zoos worldwide, how
this might bode for SeaWorld. He said SeaWorld’s new framing of its mission and animal displays moves it in a more zoo-like direction. The challenge SeaWorld has that zoos didn’t, Hyson said, is that SeaWorld visitors have a greater expectation that they’ll be entertained. “It’s still SeaWorld, and because it’s SeaWorld, visitors go to it not to learn about wildlife,” he said. “They go to have fun – and they pay to have fun.” SeaWorld’s working with its critics after years of fighting. SeaWorld’s engaged in heated battles with its critics for years. Now, it’s doing what many of them want. Many were instantly supportive on March 17. Assemblyman Richard Bloom, who introduced the so-called Blackfish Bill in 2014, which aimed to end orca breeding, celebrated on Twitter. The Animal Welfare Institute, which has been a top critic, gave the company kudos. And Humane Society CEO Wayne Pacelle even joined Manby in multiple press appearances. Manby, who took the helm at SeaWorld last April, said he decided the past battles were a distraction. “It wasn’t worth fighting that,” Manby said. “We needed to move where society is going.” That’s not to say all the fighting is over. The move comes nearly three years after SeaWorld came under pressure for its treatment of killer whales and their trainers in the documentary “Blackfish.”
“Blackfish” examined the death of SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau, who was killed by an orca named Tilikum. Since then, in a steady campaign on social media, critics have demanded SeaWorld end its orca breeding program. The director of “Blackfish,” Gabriela Cowperthwaite, called the
News move "a defining moment. The fact that SeaWorld is doing away with orca breeding marks truly meaningful change." For SeaWorld, the agreement resolves an issue that has held up expansion of the company's San Diego theme park. Plans for a new, expanded orca habitat were submit-
ted for approval to the California Coastal Commission. The commission gave its approval, but only if the theme park agreed to end captive breeding of orcas. SeaWorld went to court, arguing in a lawsuit that the commission doesn't have the authority or the expertise to make such a demand. But with this announcement, SeaWorld is now agreeing to end captive breeding. SeaWorld has seen attendance decline at its three parks since the release of “Blackfish.” The company says the decline, in part, is because of the film. The stock price of the publicly traded company has dropped by more than half in the past three years. Point Loma High School's Cinematic Arts Program was instrumental in fueling the public backlash over "Blackfish" – and Alex Allen, a senior with the program, weighed in on SeaWorld's decision accordingly. "Sea World’s choice to end the captive breeding of orcas," he said, "isn’t just a step in the right direction for animal activism but for the entire country. The fact that they didn’t fight but agreed to end captive breeding is a great example of the people’s influence on big businesses as well as a drastic change in SeaWorld’s attitude towards animal captivity. SeaWorld made a good choice when it came to phasing out
orca shows, but by ending captive breeding, they set an example." Logan Leising, also a senior, offered some thoughts as well. "I remember visiting SeaWorld dozens of times as a child," Leising said, "and I loved it. But as I grew older and began to be less myopic to their actions, it became more obvious of the neglect of the orcas. It’s truly amazing that (officials have) seen the negative effects of their ways and are now striving to correct them." Industry analysts say SeaWorld needs new attractions to compete with other theme parks, such as Walt Disney Parks & Resorts and Universal Studios Theme Parks. SeaWorld has several new roller coasters in the works and recently unveiled images of a new signature submarine ride it's planning in San Diego. In what might be seen as an ironic twist, the announcement comes as SeaWorld and animal welfare activists are closely monitoring the health of Tilikum. SeaWorld says the orca appears to have a bacterial infection in its lungs that is resistant to treatment and that the animal's health is "deteriorating." Tilikum has been with SeaWorld for 23 years and is one of the park's most prolific breeders, siring more than 20 calves. -- USA Today, NPR, staff

Buccaneers lacrosse teams aiming high By DAVE THOMAS Spring has sprung, meaning a number of Mission Bay High athletic teams are busy as usual. On the girls lacrosse scene, the Bucs headed into play this week with a record of 3-2, including a second-place finish at the Valley Center Tourney. Head coach Grant Kroeger noted his team is led by co-captains Kylie Kroeger (junior midfielder, will play at Arizona State), Lindsey Price (junior attack/midfield) and Ludmila Reynal (junior midfielder). Other key members include sophomore midfielder Shelby Moore, sophomore defender Brielle Sorice and junior defender Emery Reyna. Some rookies showing great promise, according to Kroeger, include senior Katie Baker, sophomore Jasmine Davis, junior Lea Reyes, and sophomore Naomy Espinosa. “Mission Bay lacrosse is entering its third season,” Kroeger noted. “The returning players have come out strong this year; obviously having practiced in the off-season, they have impressed me with their immediate leadership. “We have 11 new players on the team – girls that have never picked up a stick. It’s always fun to see the amazing amount of growth the girls achieve throughout the season. My expectations are always high, and the girls never cease to exceed them.”

On the boys lacrosse side, head coach Justin Aefsky’s team was still looking for its first win of the season heading into action this week. The Bucs are led by juniors Grant Sawyer (defense), Logan Turbes (goalie) and Evan Martinez (midfield). “We hope to show improvement in fundamental skills/learning lacrosse basics, which should translate to us being more competitive in games. We won zero games the first year of existence and two games last season (our second),” Aefsky said. As Aefsky also pointed out, the
program is entirely self-funded – the San Diego Unified School District does not fund lacrosse at all – more than $10K a year for a boys lacrosse team. “That is on the low side since we were able to secure $20K plus of donated gear and one-time grants and such the past three years,” Aefsky added. “There is not funding for additional coaches or a JV program. Without a JV program or middleschool feeder program, the prospect for growing the high school varsity program will continue to be hindered.”
Mission Bay High softball looks to be a hit By DAVE THOMAS With a new girls softball season off and running at Mission Bay High, the Bucs under head coach Vince Ichihara are looking for a winning campaign. Mission Bay headed into action this week with a mark of 3-4. According to Ichihara, key players on this year’s team include seniors Savannah Tarbell (first base) and Hannah Bloom (shortstop). Ichihara noted that the Bucs have a bright future with talented sophomores Paige Parkhill (third base), Maya Cota (pitcher), Serena Castro (catcher) and freshman outfielder Keionna Valverde-Flores.
“In 2016, my goals are to instill confidence, teach the girls the game of softball, fight hard, play smart, be prepared and to take pride in everything they do,” Ichihara commented. Mission Bay softball has a brandnew turf field with an exciting group of girls who play hard and are exciting to watch, according to Ichihara. “This is my first year heading the Mission Bay softball program,” Ichihara added. “I am a Mission Bay alum from the class of 1996. Parking meters, short-term rentals and DecoBike discussed at PB Town Council By DAVE SCHWAB Second District Councilwoman Lorie Zapf answered tough questions about hot-button issues, including short-term vacation rentals (STVRs), DecoBike on the boardwalk, metered parking and homelessness at Pacific Beach Town Council on March 16. In introductory marks, Zapf credited Pacific Beach residents with being “very passionate about our issues.” The councilwoman said she has been attempting “to get DecoBike to move its two bike-share locations off the boardwalk to alternative sites,” thus far to no avail. She added she has also
gone on record, in writing, to oppose a recently discussed possibility of putting limited metered parking in Pacific Beach. Zapf's comments on parking meters drew applause from some but an adverse reaction from Pacific Beach Planning Group chair Brian Curry. He noted that paid parking is among numerous revenue-generating mechanisms being looked at by a broadbased PB committee. The committee is seeking ways to raise funds to resolve parking and traffic woes which plague the beach community, especially during the busy summer tourist season. He said he felt the

councilwoman's remarks were premature. Zapf responded that she would be willing to review any recommendations the committee ultimately makes. Regarding STVRs, which many in the beach community want purged entirely from residential areas, Zapf said she agreed with that perspective but has encountered resistance from the city attorney's office. “This is a very difficult, complex citywide issue involving multiple layers,” she said. “I have been the strongest, most vocal advocate against opening up transient hotels
in neighborhoods that disrupt the quality of life.” Zapf said she believes visitor accommodations in the municipal code governing STVRs means “visitors you're accommodating.” But the councilwoman added she has met resistance from the city attorney's office, which has told her the term “visitor accommodations” is vague and needs to be redefined in any new ordinance revising rules governing STVRs and their placement. She said she's hoping to get an amended ordinance on STVRs before the City Council begins its annual budget deliberations in May but
added that timetable is uncertain. On homelessness, Zapf said that's really two issues involving two separate groups: truly needy homeless veterans and families who require a helping hand, and hardcore transients who prefer living on the streets and decline public services to aid them. Noting the mayor has just pledged to house 1,000 veterans now on the streets, Zapf said the city is making progress in its “housing first” approach to provide vouchers and other housing subsidies for the homeless. The councilwoman also railed against Proposition 47, passed by California voters in 2014, which downgraded many crimes from felonies to misdemeanors, making some offenders eligible for early release. “They (state) sold us a bill of goods, because they didn't provide enough funding for it,” Zapf said, noting that the early release of about a thousand prisoners statewide, coupled with police personnel shortages, has created a “toxic situation.” Zapf's session was preceded by discussion from San Diego Police Northern Division Capt. Mark Hanten and public relations officer Larry Hesselgesser, who discussed recent successes in catching burglars in the act with help from the public as well as addressing the department's ongoing personnel shortage.
