BULLETIN OF THE SOUTH DAKOTA CHESS ASSOCIATION VOL 29#1 March 2006 I apologize for my delay in getting this bulletin out. We have had ten chess events in our area since the last bulletin .Normally, I try to put out a bulletin in December to advertise the winter events. John Donaldson wrote a fine article for the January 2006 Chess Life “ The 2005 Governor's Cup was directed by Jill and Terry Likens and organized by Jeff Barth with De and David Knudson handling fundraising. One of the things that makes the Governor's Cup unique is the tremendous support from the local business community. This year the sponsors included: CorTrust Bank, DakotaCorrugated Box Co., Davenport, Evans, Hurwitz & Smith, First Premier Bank and Premier Bankcard, Inc., Great Western Bank, Holiday Inn City Center, Midcontinent Media, Inc., Qwest Foundation, Paul Salem, Sioux Valley Hospitals and Health System, The Everist Company, The First National Bank in Sioux Falls, Wal-Mart Foundation and Way Trust.” De Knudson and Jeff Barth have announced that the 11th Governor’s Cup will be held at the Holiday Inn in Sioux Falls from October 27-29,2006. We would like to thank Terry and Jill Likens who directed six of these events, Randy Christenson who organized the Chess Nuts tournament and brought the Grandview team to seven of these tournament Glenn Eide who organized the Girls State Championship and brought the Pierre Indian Learning Center team to seven tournament, Eric Abrahamson who organized the Veterans Day Scholastic, the Black Hills Classic and the South Dakota Scholastic Chess Tournament Mark Derby who organized the Coyote Classic and Nels Truelson who directed the Coyote, Matt Stensland -Bos who organized the Luverne Chess Festival, Jeff Barth who directed the Sioux Falls Chess Club Fall Swiss and Bob Wallace who ran the Pierre Chess Club tournament not to mention the innumerable parents who brought kids to tournaments and helped out at the sites. Nick won his first State High School Championship with a playoff victory over Isaac Gerdes. In fact this was the first year that Sioux Falls Home School did not win a state team championship in any division since it first entered the State Scholastic Chess Championships in 1998. Rapid City South won its first junior high championship since 1996.Rapid City Grandview won three divisions and PierreIndian Learning Center won the remaining division.
