THE BULLETIN OF THE SOUTH DAKOTA CHESS ASSOCIATION Truelsons dominate SDCA again The Truelsons dominated the summer SDCA tournaments. The Truelson team won the South Dakota Teams at Oacoma drawing only one match.. Nels took Board one prrize while his son. Nick Truelson won the board 3 prize. The Truelsons got out quickly crushing Sioux Falls One in the first round. After Sioux Falls could only draw with last years champions Merchants of Death, the Sioux Falls team was merely playing out the string. This draw however neant that the Merchants of Death would need a win over the Trulesons. only able to get a drawn match with the Truelson. On board two Randall Koeller tied with Serif Suljic with Randall winning the head to head meeting. Dan Merchant won the board four prize It was decided that next years Teams would be in Pierre. Nels tied with Lyle Hanson at the Closed for South Dakota State Champion.. They drew their head to head game and then drew the playoff so we have joint champions for the first time since 1982.This was Nels’s fourth championship and Lyle’s third championship.. Nick Truleson was able to win his third straight junior title despite losing his head to head game with Isaac Gerdes. This is the second time that I have this tournament. I did not see myself as a threat to winning the State Championship. I have always enjoyed the Teams because there was a more
been elected SDCA President. Both times I was not present at the meeting at which I was elected. The moral of the story is to attend the SDCA annual meeting if you do not want to be elected president. Recently I received a phone call blaming me as SDCA president for the low attendance at the South Dakota Closed. I have only played twice in the Closed at the 1990 and 1993 tournaments in Rapid City. I only atteneded these tournaments because I had been forced to miss the South Dakota Team Tournament Personally I have never had any attraction for this atteniding
relaxed atomosphere and you could find satisfaction in your teams success even if you were not doing well I have some success at the Teams winnning
