Project 4 O’clock SHARP enforces pleasurable reading habits SOLOMON D. TARRANCO Teacher I

aunching ‘Brigada Pagbasa’ in Alabat Island National High School this school year 2021-2022, Project 4 O’clock SHARP (Simultaneous and Habitual Amplification of Reading Practices) is one of the projects initiated to primarily identify learners with reading habits and encourage learners without reading habits to discover their reading interests to form the habits. This project is inspired from the famous CEOs like Jack Ma, Bill Gates, and Elon Musk have been using the ‘5Hour Rule’. The term was coined by Michael Simmons, founder of Empact. The concept is wonderfully simple: No matter how busy successful people are, they always spend at least an hour a day — or five hours a work week — reading, learning, or practicing. So, adapting the 5-Hour-Rule of Simmons, Alabat Island National High School with Project SHARP, aims to have a uniform time of every 4:00 pm for simultaneous pleasurable reading while at the same time fostering formative habits of reading for the purpose relaxation, entertainment, and productivity. The aim was to measure and describe the learners' reading performance in Filipino particularly in oral reading, silent reading and listening comprehension. The Philippines ranked in the low 70s in the 2018 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), a student assessment of 15 -year-old learners across 79 countries done by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD); such result was alarming as is revealed poor reading skills of Filipino learnersthere is an urgent need in addressing this issue and gaps in attainment of quality education. We cannot argue the fact that even before children go to schooling, their home serves as their first classroom; parents today should invest in their child’s future through literacy play and turn everyday experiences into learning regardless of child’s age.
With this, school could perform its function as main agent of education and would further develop the enriched culture of reading into a child. The issue of poor literacy with Filipino learners is not only a problem that the Department of education should address. It is a shared obligation of home and school to develop reading literacy to every learners as they progress learning from home setting to schoolroom environment. ssessment is integral to the teaching-learning process. Using Project GREAT as assessment for learning is indeed indispensable especially this time of 2N where teachers have limited access to learners. Project GREAT demonstrates learning reflections in a variety of ways where students, parents, teachers and stakeholders provide feedbacks, comments and suggestions to assess the effectiveness of the process and what needs to be modified to ensure relevant and productive learnings. The fact that teachers could not mingle regularly with the learners and addressing some challenges are undoable because of health and safety protocols, making reflection is the most pertinent connector that binds everyone involved in the learning process. In Bridaga Pagbasa, parents and volunteers are the key characters to play great roles in learning to read and to comprehend. So, Project Great is of great importance to connect one another in expressing their feelings, opinions, point of view and experiences regarding the process. For modification, assessment and reflection is not only limited to graffiti but allowing it also in writing essay, slogan, quotation, short poem, spoken poetry, rap and other creative and reflective manners of self-expression. This helps learners “hear” each other’s ideas and allows every voice to be heard. In addition, it provides a way to engage everyone in the conversation. It creates a record of student’s ideas and questions that can be referred to at a later point Project GREAT also assesses one’s emotional and mental challenges in this pandemic time. It gives space and time to process emotional material of those involved in the learning process particularly in Brigada Pagbasa. After the process, suggestions and comments on relevant concerns could be given much priority for further improvement of teaching and learning. Hence,

LR on wheels: a ray of hope in delivering education ARNIELYN B. CAPARROS Master Teacher I
Learning Resources on Wheels, a project of Alabat Island National High School (AINHS) to make the learning of the students possible in the rural areas where internet connection is not available or has weak signal reception and in some part the “blended” learning has not been materialized because of inaccessibility of the contact information for the learning mode due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The project served as the tool to reach the learners in every sitios of each barangay with learning materials and reading activities. Learners living in remote areas will be catered with learning materials from AINHS and personally assisted by the teachers. The bicycle, tricycle, van, cart or any mode of transportation will be utilized to take the instructional materials/devices/equipment to help the students in their learning and for the implementation of the program.
The Learning on Wheels will be conducted in cooperation with Brigada Pagbasa in two Barangays, the Sitio Iton, Poblacion 3 near Parola site and in Gawad Kalinga Village, Brgy Camagong. The team leader Mrs. Arnielyn B. Caparros, together with the members chose this Barangay as their first area to implement the project because these barangay has the most number of learners. Prior to the implementation, the team secure the papers and prepare the needed materials for the reading activity, furthermore, they made sure to follow the safety protocols during the Brigada Pagbasa. Aside the reading materials that needed for the students’ reading performance, the team brought the testing reading power book to ensure that reading comprehension skills of the students will be gauge during the activity. Further, the students watched the digital offline stories using laptop and smarTV. After the

Alabat Island National High School is determined to deliver quality education despite the challenges brought about by the current pandemic. Under the school’s ‘SALAMAT KABAYAN PROJECT’ we come up into an innovation entitled AKLAT / BABASAHIN MULA SA AMIN , GAMITIN AT PAGYAMANIN to reach out internal and external stakeholders and build strong partnership to sustain the needs of the learners in the new normal.
This covers partnership initiatives under the Adopt-a-School Program of the Department of Education. It includes the identification of possible partners/stakeholders (public/private) individual, government or non-government organizations, LGU and AINHS Alumni. Before the pandemic, Alabat Island National High School religiously conducted ‘Wellness Dance’ during the flag raising ceremony, but with the pandemic wherein learners are prohibited to go outside, “Brigada Dance” was launched to keep the families kinesthetically active.

ENABLING VALUES KKKDM serves as a model in implementing a valuesdriven learning approach with a dream to be benchmarked by the whole country. The revival of GMRC in the Philippines is a good sign that the agency recognizes the importance of values integration in all the lessons, making it part of the routines of the students and making the communities their laboratories of learning and in developing the values of KKKDM.
‘Industriousness’ is that consistent , habitual, and excellent performance of task, responsibility, or any work that it’s no longer an effort for an individual to do because it already becomes a part of his system.
DISIPLINA ‘Discipline’ is elf empowerment over the non-essential, temporal or peripheral things and situations. It is a liberty to exercise self-restraint or control over material things, vices, caprices, innuendos, etc. For one to be able to discipline others must first and foremost discipline oneself.
MALASAKIT ‘Concern/ Empathy’ is sharing one’s time, effort, and resources for a cause. Deep concern with one another with no expectations in return.
