The listing of graduates in this program is based upon preliminary information provided by the Office of the University Registrar at the time of publication. The official conferral of degrees and Departmental Honors occurs upon satisfactory completion of all academic and financial requirements. Publication in this program does not determine degree eligibility or represent official listing of degree recipients.

Stephanie Allis, of North Branford, Conn., is a double major in social work and sociology, with a concentration in criminology and criminal justice. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA while demonstrating a sophisticated level of understanding of social work and social welfare concepts and a strong commitment to the values and ethics of the profession.
As a first-generation college student and single mother of six children with a deep commitment to service, Allis has experienced both foster care and foster parenting. She describes her path to higher education as “anything but linear,” and says the challenges she has faced have strengthened her “determination to pursue a career rooted in advocacy, equity, and social justice.”
Allis believes that education is about more than her own advancement; it is about learning to support others more effectively. Her endeavors beyond the classroom

Hannah Ashiru of Waterbury, Conn., is a chemistry major with a concentration in biochemistry.
Enrolled in the Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s (4+1) Program, she is currently in the second semester of a four-semester research project and has a 3.95 GPA. She has received a number of awards and scholarships for academic excellence.
During an undergraduate pre-med research fellowship at Hartford Hospital, Ashiru had an epiphany when she realized that the research she was doing was about more than her own knowledge and intellectual growth. She came to understand that in doing this work, she was actually making a contribution to something larger than herself, and that her research could have a real impact. Ashiru’s new understanding of her work has shaped how she approaches opportunity moving forward. She also views her past leadership and community service
exemplify this belief: in her undergraduate social work practicum at Metropolitan Business Academy, a public interdistrict magnet high school in New Haven, she works closely with adolescents who are experiencing academic, behavioral, and psychosocial challenges.
Academically, Allis has excelled, earning a place on the Dean’s List and President’s List and receiving awards for academic distinction. Her work experience and community activities share a common thread of engagement with and service to others.
After graduating, Allis plans to enroll in a master’s program in social work and a Juris Doctor program in family law. Her ultimate goal is to become an advocate for foster children in Connecticut.
“I am driven by a desire to ensure that vulnerable populations are not only protected, but heard, respected, and supported with dignity,” Allis said.
experiences—such as serving as a chemistry tutor and volunteer training and fundraising for a domestic violence advocacy organization—in a new light.
“I am still on the path of self-discovery,” Ashiru said. “However, I have come to understand that in my path of discovery, I also carry responsibility. I am here to create knowledge; knowledge that serves others and to leave every space I enter better than I found it.”
Given that sense of responsibility, Ashiru is planning to pursue a career in medicine after graduating, having learned through her research of the gaps that exist in how women’s health, particularly gynecological diseases, are researched. “I no longer approach my academic journey as just preparation for a future career,” she said. “I now see my journey as a commitment to contributing to a field that demands dedication, intellectual rigor, and responsibility.”

Paul Concordia, of Norwalk, Conn., is a social work major with a minor in sociology.
Concordia’s journey to higher education reflects resilience, purpose, and a deep commitment to service.
Graduating with a 3.94 GPA, he has distinguished himself as both a high-achieving student and a dedicated advocate for individuals facing complex life challenges.
For more than seven years, Concordia has served the Bridgeport community through the Recovery Network of Programs. Beginning as a recovery support specialist, he advanced into a supervisory role and now works as a peer support coordinator, where he manages a caseload, mentors staff, and helps individuals reconnect with housing, treatment, employment, and family support systems.

Heather Gaydowen, of Wallingford, Conn., is a psychology major with minors in film studies and honors transdisciplinary studies.
Gaydowen has distinguished herself as an exceptional scholar and student leader, graduating with a 3.98 GPA and a perfect 4.00 GPA in her psychology major. A member of the Honors College, she has paired academic excellence with a strong commitment to research and student engagement.
Her work in the Stress, Anxiety, and Well-Being (SAW) Laboratory, led by Associate Professor Christopher Budnick, has been central to her experience. Beginning as a research assistant, she advanced to lab manager, mentoring fellow students and guiding projects from initial research questions through data analysis and conference presentation.
Gaydowen has presented multiple conference posters and secured more than $7,300 in competitive research
