Camping in West Sweden
– Coastlines, Lakes, and Canals
West Sweden consists of Bohuslän, Dalsland, and Västergötland, each with its own distinct character. Gothenburg is the capital city for Västra Götaland, Sweden’s second-largest city, and is the natural gateway to the wider region. West Sweden’s landscape is one of forests, lakes, plateau mountains, history and agriculture, it also includes shorelines along Sweden’s two largest lakes, Vänern and Vattern and a glittering marine coastline.

Västergötland: Nature and History
In Västergötland, you can enjoy natural landscapes and historical excursions. The area is dominated by the UNESCO-listed plateau mountains and Lakes Vänern and Vättern; perfect for hiking, swimming and kayak tours, it is also home to the historic Göta Canal and fairytale Läckö Castle, 12th century Varnhem Abbey and Viking era Kata Gård. With so much history it’s no wonder the area is known as Sweden’s Cradle.
Bohuslän: Coastal Adventures
Campsites along the Bohuslän coast, offer easy access to the sea and the archipelago. Combine your stay with activities such as kayaking, snorkelling, cycling, and hiking along the granite cliffs. There is plenty to see and do all along the coast so you’re never far from a destination attraction, such as Nordens Ark, Vitlycke Museum, Havets Hus, the Nordic Watercolour Museum, or one of the many picturesque towns and villages. While you’re there be sure to enjoy a view of the archipelago while sampling the local seafood; it doesn’t get fresher than this.
Dalsland: Wilderness and Lakes
The Dalsland landscape is a little more remote and is mostly dense forest scattered with crystal clear lakes; perfect for a close to nature experience. The scenic Dalsland Canal meets road and rail in Håverud, where all three navigate a rocky descent to the shores of the Lake Vänern waterways. The canal and sheltered lakes are also ideal for kayaking and fishing, and many campsites are close to gravel cycling and hiking trails. Don’t miss the heritage attractions such as Halmens Hus and Not Quite, or your best chance to see the Swedish King of the Forest at Dalsland’s Moose Ranch or at Dalsland’s Activities.
Gothenburg: The City by the Sea
Gothenburg is the perfect place to start or end your journey. Campsites near to the centre provide easy access to all the delights of a big city, along with famous attractions such as Liseberg amusement park, Universeum Science Center, and the charming Haga district with its old wooden houses and cobbled streets.

Did you know that...
…YOU CAN SEE A SEA EAGLE FROM LAND FROM MORE PLACES THAN YOU MIGHT THINK?
Along the coastline of Blekinge, on the islands of Öland and Gotland, and around Lake Mälaren, sightings of the sea eagle are becoming more common. Often, a quiet walk on a beach and some patience is all that is needed.
…SWEDEN HAS MORE ISLANDS THAN ANY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD?
With more than 260,000 islands, Sweden is a true island nation. Most of the islands have no bridge and are uninhabited - but small ferries or taxi boats make it possible to explore this unique island world. Uppland, Västergötland, Bohuslän, Blekinge, Södermanland and Norrbotten offer adventures on thousands of islands.
…SWEDEN IS ONE OF THE COUNTRIES IN EUROPE WITH THE MOST OPEN CULTURAL ENVIRONMENTS THAT CAN BE VISITED FOR FREE?
Rune stones, burial grounds, ruins, and old industrial environments are often simply there in the landscape, many only a short walk from a parking lot or campsite. Visit Anundshög, Rökstenen or Glimminge Hus among others for a free dose of history.

Welcome to Sweden
Here are some of the need-to-know things about Sweden that will make your vacation run smoother.
ACCESS TO SWEDISH NATURE
The public right of access is a unique right that applies to all visitors to Sweden. This is why you can swim in lakes, sunbathe on beaches and pick flowers, berries and mushrooms. Read more on page 18.
Fishing in Sweden
Sweden is a paradise for people who like to go fishing. You are free to fish the coastline and major lakes – Vänern, Vättern, Mälaren, Hjälmaren and Storsjön – but a permit is needed elsewhere. At Camping.se, you can search for campsites located close to good fishing waters. These campsites usually also sell fishing permits.
Dogs and cats
Pets brought into Sweden must have a passport and ID marking, be both vaccinated and dewormed, and be reported to Swedish Customs. More information is available at jordbruksverket.se
Seasonal higlights
Sweden is a long country, stretching over 1,500 kilometers from north to south. Naturally, both the weather and the number of sunlight hours vary greatly depending on the season and the region.
SPRING (MARCH–MAY)
Valborgsmässoafton (Walpurgis Night) is celebrated on April 30th with bonfires and songs, marking the arrival of brighter days. In the north, melting snow unveils vast wilderness and powerful rivers.
SUMMER (JUNE–AUGUST)
June 6th marks Sweden’s National Day, but Midsummer, celebrated in mid-June, is the most cherished holiday nationwide. In the north, you can experience the midnight sun, while all of Sweden enjoys at least 18 hours of daylight each day. Swedish schoolchildren are on summer break from mid-June to mid-August.
AUTUMN (SEPTEMBER–NOVEMBER)
Frost and darkness arrive earlier in the north than in the south, painting the landscape with vivid autumn colours and offering spectacular auroras. Picking mushrooms and lingonberries is a beloved pastime across the country.
WINTER (DECEMBER–FEBRUARY)
In the north, winter transforms the region into an Arctic wonderland with auroras, dog sledding, and skiing. Traditions like Advent and Lucia, celebrated on December 13th, bring warmth and light to the long, dark days.
DRINKING WATER
In Sweden, tap water is generally considered very good and safe to drink.

All roads lead to Sweden
There are many ways to travel to Sweden. Most require crossing the water, but it is also possible to drive all the way to Sweden via Great Belt Bridge and Öresund Bridge from Denmark. The map on this page shows a number of different ways to reach our oblong country. Camping Key Europe cardholders are also eligible for a discount on a number of ferries.
Happy travels!
These ferries offer discounts for Camping Key Europe cardholders.
LIGHTS
Low beams/daytime running lights should be on during the day.
SPEED LIMITS
Standard cars and B-license motorhomes must follow advertised speed limits. In urban areas, the speed limit is usually 50 km/h. On open country roads the speed limit is 80 or 90 km/h, and on highways 110 km/h or occasionally 120 km/h. The speed limit for standard cars pulling a trailer or camper is 80 km/h.
LAW REGARDING ALCOHOL
A person may only operate a vehicle in Sweden if their blood alcohol level is 0.2 or lower.
WINTER DRIVING
If you visit Sweden during the period 1/12–31/3, standard cars and trailers must have winter tyres on all four wheels when driving in winter road conditions. Studded winter tyres are permitted during the period 1/10–15/4. If the towing vehicle has studded tyres, the trailer must also have studded tyres when driving in winter road conditions. It is also a good idea to have a winter kit in the vehicle that includes a reflective vest, jumping cables, an ice scraper, a spade, a towline and a bag of gravel to help with tyre grip.
WILDLIFE ACCIDENTS
Sweden is home to many different species of wildlife, including elk and deer, which can sometimes wander out onto roads. Be particularly observant when driving in rural and forested areas, particularly at sunrise or sundown when the animals are the most active.
CONGESTION TAX
Congestion tax are only charged in Stockholm and Gothenburg. The congestion tax is not charged weekdays between 6:30 PM and 5:59 AM, on Saturdays and Sundays, on the day before a public holiday, on public holidays, or in July. The tax can only be paid via invoice or direct debit. There are no toll booths or pay stations. For vehicles registered abroad, invoices and payments are sent via EPASS24. More information is available at EPASS24's website.
LIQUID PETROLEUM GAS
Liquid petroleum gas tanks can be purchased and exchanged at petrol stations. The connection for liquid petroleum gas tanks in Sweden is called POL. It is also possible to fill own bottles with liquid petroleum gas. Some service locations are listed at www.gasolfyllarna.se or www.gasolkartan.se. Liquid petroleum gas tanks may never be stored lying down since this disengages the safety valve.
THE JOURNEY STARTS ONBOARD
SWEDISH TRANSPORT ADMINISTRATION FERRIES
In some locations in Sweden, there are road ferries operated by the Swedish Transport Administration to transport cars and other passengers across sounds or to islands free of charge. There are two exceptions: a fee is charged for Ekeröleden and Visingsöleden.
ELECTRICAL HOOK-UP AT CAMPSITES
In Sweden, the standard voltage is 230 V in a normal electrical plug at campsites, and fuses are normally 10 A or 16 A. Sweden uses the Type F electrical plug (a Schuko plug) with 10 A or a CEE plug with 10 A or 16 A. The connection cable must be an approved type with an area of 3 x 2.5 mm² and not be more than 25 m long. EVs may only be charged at specific stations intended for this type of charging; never via the electrical hook-up pole at the campsite pitch.
EV CHARGING STATION
Public charging stations are found throughout most of Sweden. However, availability can be very limited in some places, primarily in northern Sweden and in rural settings. Plan in advance for trips to these areas.

9 vineyards, distilleries and breweries worthy of a visit
Since 2025, Swedish producers of wine, beer and spirits may sell their own drinks directly to visitors. We have gathered here some of our favourites from throughout the country.
Vineyards
1. ÄSTAD VINGÅRD, TVÅÅKER, HALLAND
Ästad is one of Sweden’s most famous vineyards, renowned for its sparkling wines made from organic grapes. Follow the entire process – from vines in the vineyard to bubbles in the glass.
2. STORA HORNS VINGÅRD, HASSLÖ, BLEKINGE
An archipelago vineyard where the salty sea air adds an extra dimension to the flavour. The wines here are crisp and aromatic, often made from the Solaris grape, which thrives in Blekinge’s climate.
3. LUNA VINGÅRD, LYSEKIL, BOHUSLÄN
A vineyard with its heart in Bohuslän but the roots of its flavour in Spain. Here you will find fruity red wines and aged variations that reflect the owner’s dual cultural heritage.
Breweries
4. GÅRDSBRYGGERI, KLÖVSJÖ, JÄMTLAND
Located in one of the country’s most beautiful mountain valleys, this brewery makes its beer using water from mountain springs. It offers everything from classic lagers to hops-aromatic IPA and dark stout.
5. LEUFSTABRUK BRYGGERI, UPPLAND
Beer with a modern touch brewed in an industrial environment from the 1600s. The brewery is known for its ales and spicy special beers inspired by Belgian traditions.
6. NÄRKE KULTURBRYGGERI, ÖREBRO
A microbrewery known for its creative and often small-scale production. It offers everything from classic porters to innovative barrel-aged beer, including the award-winning ”Kaggen Stormaktsporter”.
Distilleries
7. FIERUAAS DISTILLERY, FJÄRÅS, HALLAND

8. STAFVA GÅRD GINFABRIK, VISBY, GOTLAND
Gotland limestone meets craft spirits in this unique environment. The gin has a clear taste of herbs and a hint of sea breeze –the perfect souvenir from the island.
9. REVSUNDS BREWERY & DISTILLERY, GÄLLÖ, JÄMTLAND
A combination of brewery and distillery that offers both beer and whisky. Here, rustic ale, spicy snaps, and barrel-aged whisky are all under development. The cosy farm store makes you want to stay a bit longer.

PUBLIC RIGHT TO NATURE
Sweden's unique right of public access allows us to move freely almost anywhere, pick berries and mushrooms, and pitch a tent in nature. It has been a tradition in Sweden for hundreds of years, and it was added to Sweden's constitution in 1994 to ensure that nature is for everyone – and to protect it. Here are some examples of what this means for you as you spend time in Swedish nature.
Do not disturb, do not destroy
Always try to choose the path that has the least impact on nature, and avoid cycling or running on, for example, lichen, moss, meadows and marshes.
Terrain Driving Act
Do not drive vehicles in terrain since this damages nature. This basically applies to all land that is not a road or land intended for vehicles.
PICK FLOWERS
You may pick flowers – as long as they are not a protected species – but never dig up the entire plant.
Respect signs
You must parking, camping or overnighting with a camper or caravan. Never drive on a road with signs indicating it is private property.
CONSIDERATION
FOR ANIMAL LIFE
Think about not putting animals in nature under stress, especially if they have offspring. Often, this means keeping your dog on a lead. Pass through paddocks with care, always closing the gate behind you.
PITCH A TENT
You may pitch a tent in most places where it is not explicitly prohibited, e.g., in protected areas such as national parks and nature reserves, but not close to private homes and no longer than 24 hours at a time.
START A FIRE
You may start a fire where it is not explicitly prohibited or unless there is a fire ban if you are careful to ensure it does not spread or damage nature - for example on bare granite or boulders.
DO NOT LEAVE FOOD BEHIND IN THE FOREST
Always take your trash with you when you leave, and never leave food (incl. meat) behind in nature since this can spread diseases to animals.
TAKE YOUR TRASH WITH YOU
Make it a habit to pack an empty plastic bag so you can easily take with you everything that does not belong in nature. Always empty toilets and wastewater at designated disposal points.
The right of public access works because those of us who enjoy nature make sure we respect it.
Action-packed shows, activities for the whole family, and accommodation just a stone’s throw from the Wild West!
Travelling in Vilhelm Moberg’s
Come along on a trip full of contrasts through author Vihelm Moberg’s Småland, with everything from shrimp sandwiches for SEK 39 to the world’s largest James Bond museum.
TEXT Cenneth Sparby PHOTO Sam Hedman
Time to explore the heart of Småland, where Växjö has a lot to offer. Easily fill a day checking out the 12th century cathedral and Kulturparken Småland, which features the House of Emigrants and a glass museum.
A coffee at Bönan & Mustaschen perfectly rounds off the visit. This intimate coffee bar offers rustic bean blends and delicious baked goods. The outdoor seating has a retro feel and relaxed atmosphere.
Enthusiasts of top-class culinary experiences with clear local ties must eat dinner at PM & Vänner – Växjö’s gastronomical stronghold. The restaurant has one star in the Michelin Guide. But there is also the more relaxed bistro, which offers an affordable three-course dinner. The menu features fresh roe from the lumpsucker fish, raw veal steak flavoured with wild garlic, lamb from Appeltorp, and more.
It is close to Helgasjön lake and Evedals Camping, which is run by Maryana Holst and her sons.
Småland
“We have quite a few short-term guests, particularly those driving coast to coast between Halmstad and Kalmar,” explains Maryana. “There are also many German and Danish guests who spend the night on their way to Vimmerby and Astrid Lindgren’s World.”
Renting a boat or canoe for a trip up to the Helgö and Hissö nature reserves is a popular activity among guests, who also have access to padel, adventure golf, and playgrounds at the campsite. And then, of course, there is the Kingdom of Glass.
CAMPING IN A LAKE ARCHIPELAGO
The road south to Lake Åsnen and the national park with the same name passes Lake Trummen and Teleborg Castle, which with its pinnacles and towers is reminiscent of a medieval castle in the Scottish highlands. Perfect for a morning coffee, with time to check out both the architecture and the leafy park.
After another 20 km through the deep and vast Småland forests awaits the village of Urshult and Lake Åsnen.
Evedals Camping attracts guests thanks to its location and broad selection of activities.
Visit Vilhelm Moberg’s old school in Moshultamåla, which has a room with pictures, books and clips from his colourful life as a writer. His bust was placed outside the entrance in 2000.
Börjes tempts with a shrimp sandwich for SEK 39 and coffee for SEK 1.50.
Urshult is the gateway to Åsnen National Park, which largely consists of waterways. In 2018 it was inaugurated as Sweden’s 30th national park. There is a nature campsite out on Getnö in the middle of the park that attracts far-flung visitors from primarily Germany, Belgium and Holland.
Ingrid Olsson, who runs the Getnö – Lake Åsnen Resort, is lyrical about all of the possible trips – on foot, by bike and by canoe.
“We have an impressive lake archipelago with more than 1,000 islands,” she states with a smile.
Many guests choose to go canoeing or rent one of the resort’s boats to go fishing. Both pike-perch and bass are abundant.
Ingrid is also a certified nature guide and is happy to take her guests out onto the water to look for osprey and sea eagles.
Tingsryd is close by, where we fill up at Runes Bensin. A classic example of Småland entrepreneurial spirit, it was opened 70 years ago by mechanic Rune Johansson and his wife. A trip back to the 1960s and gas station nostalgia, with neon signs and personal service.
“Don’t miss the shrimp sandwich at Börjes,” suggests Anders Tungegård, who keeps the family tradition alive at Runes.
Börjes shopping centre is naturally a must. Nostalgia is high here, where time appears to have stood still. The restaurant Hyllan, which has a view of the shops, serves a huge sandwich with a mountain of shrimp for only SEK 39. A coffee costs SEK 1.50, and refills are free.
The girl working the checkout says that they sell almost 100,000 sandwiches a year.
KINGDOM OF GLASS NEXT
In the triangle between Växjö, Tingsryd and Nybro, there is an old tradition of craftsmanship and glassworks. This success story began with Kosta Glasbruk in 1742. The riches of the forest laid the groundwork for the blossoming glass industry, which consisted of more than 40 glassworks at its peak.
Today, there are a dozen left that make glassware and world-class glass art. Some of the most well-known are Kosta, Målerås, Skruf and Orrefors. Several of the active glassworks also offer tours and the possibility to test glass blowing.
During our visit to Skruf Glassworks, which dates back to 1897, we go on a guided tour with the owner Kent Elm.
“My father and I took over the operations 20 years ago and we are continuing the family tradition of hand-blown craft glass.”
Skruf is open year round, and visitors are always allowed to visit the glass cabin. Kent tells us about an event that is arranged in October every year: Glowing Kingdom of Glass, a weekend filled with glass shows, light installations, and open studios.
Visit one of the open glassworks around Kosta, Boda and Orrefors for a warm and fascinating experience.
Skruf is located next to the Utvandrarleden, a historical hiking trail that follows Vilhelm Moberg’s classic The Emigrants novel series. The trail offers both nature experiences and literary immersion – perfect for those who want to combine hiking with history.
More than 200,000 residents of Småland emigrated to America in the 1800s, and traces of this are still evident at places like Ljuder, Åkerby, Korpamoen, Långasjö and Moshult.
Ljuder, just 5 km west of the glassworks, is an excellent starting point for exploring Moberg’s world. A visit to Ljuder’s museum and its America room immerses visitors in the stories of those who left the country. And if you are lucky, the 90-year-old chair of the local museum association Börje Nilsson will be there to share his knowledge about the emigrants’ challenges.
“More than 1,300 Ljuder residents emigrated, and they gathered at the Åkerby intersection on their way to Karlshamn and the cross-Atlantic ships. A memorial stone commemorates everyone who left,” he explains during the tour.
And it is fully worth it to continue along the trail to the Korrö crafts village to explore the Ronnebyån river. Or Klasatorpet outside of Långasjö, which became Karl-Oskar and Kristina’s home Korpamo in the movie version of The Emigrants Director Jan Troell chose the location because of its red cottages, fenced-in yards, magical spruce forests and stony fields. Vilhelm Moberg approved the location himself, but he did comment that there could have been more stones.
The local historical association also offers guided tours to learn more about the making of the movie.
At Getnö – Lake Åsnen Resort, guests stay next to the national park.
Korpamoen is a portal to Moberg’s world.
IMPASSIONED AGENT
Nybro is next, 40 km west of Långasjö. It features the James Bond 007 Museum – the only permanent Bond museum in the world, an impassioned and slightly crazy project started by Gunnar James Bond Schäfer. He not only loves Agent 007, but also has officially embraced the name as part of his own – appropriately in 2007.
“As soon as I find out that a new Bond movie is in the making, I contact the production company to ask if I can buy some props when filming has completed.”
This has resulted in thousands of objects from the Bond movies – from motorbikes, cars and an aeroplane to posters, watches and a roulette table. The museum also has a Bollinger Bar, a Bond cinema, and a library. Your visit could take a while, particularly with Gunnar as your guide.
We round off our Småland trip with a visit to Pukebergs Glasbruk, where they have been forming glass since 1871. Yet another historical location well worth the visit. Particularly since it is customary to gather to enjoy crispy fried pork, sausage, baked potatoes and real Swedish cheese cake from Småland.

Fairy-tale forest by the sea
The landscape of Trollskogen on the north end of Öland has been shaped by the wind, with crooked pines, sand dunes and beach meadows. The trees have grown slowly under harsh conditions and gained their characteristic forms from salt, wind and poor soil. The area also contains traces of human presence with shipwrecks and older ruins. Paths cut through this troll-like forest and continue on to the sea, where the horizon and open expanses enhance the feeling of a landscape formed by the forces of nature. There lie the remains of a ship that continues to witness the passing of each year.

Adventure & tradition in Dalarna
From hillside farms and whitewater rafting to mountains and cycling – tag along on a memorable trip through Dalarna filled with nature, culture and adventure.
TEXT Joakim Almén PHOTO Daniel Bernstål
Dalarna is more than just a province – it is Sweden in concentrated form, distilled in the characteristic Falu red colour with glitter from Lake Siljan and stories embroidered in the walls. Vast views and deep forest alongside artists’ homes. Skiing trails turn into cycling trails in the summer, and hillside farms lend the province its idyllic character. Tradition meets a modern pulse – from Dala horses and the world’s longest lake pier to fishing in the Dalälven river and summer adventures in the mountains.
Our trip starts in Avesta, where we are welcomed by a 13 m painted Dala horse. And a steel bar is raised every time pole vault icon and “hometown hero” Armand Duplantis sets a new record.
We continue north along Route 70 and stop to recharge at the iconic restaurant Lappens Grill in Hedemora, known for its large portions. Ready to burn some extra calories, we set off on the forested road towards Falun.
ADRENALINE RUSH AT LUGNET
Along the winding road up to the ski jumping tower at Lugnet, we pass a group of roller skiers whose stroke rate is worthy of the world cup.
Lugnet is known for winter sports – it will host the world championships in cross-country skiing in 2027 – but in the summer it is a mountain biking Mecca. Falu native Jenny Rissveds laid the groundwork for her Olympic medals here, and there is an XCO trail pedalled by the world’s elite for those seeking a proper challenge.
We instead choose the less challenging, and for us more enjoyable, “old granny” trail next to the ski jumping tower. The area around Lugnet’s skiing stadium offers an impressive number of trails to explore.
Lilla Hyttnäs, Carl and Karin Larsson’s colourful home in Sundborn, is one of Dalarna’s most popular destinations.
”Not only is it really nice here, but we are also in a good location for day trips.”
About 10 km from Lugnet, we find another type of calm. The stillness at Sundbornsån river and the inviting atmosphere of Lilla Hyttnäs – the home that famous artists Carl and Karin Larsson created at the end of the 1800s – make us feel like we stepped into one of his paintings.
In Dalarna’s Switzerland, which Bjursås is called, we stop at the campsite Bjursås Berg & Sjö. Next door, Bjursberget mountain has 21 pistes in the winter, but there are things to do year round, and summertime offers some surprising international flair. At the campsite, we hear Dutch and German among the guests.
“Our guests are mainly Swedish, but also Germans, Dutch, Danes and Norwegians. When I was down at the beach with my children the other evening, they commented that they heard Norwegian, Finnish, Danish and German,” says Michaela Lyngar, facility manager at Bjursås Berg & Sjö.
“Not only is it really nice here, but we are also in a good location for day trips: 20 minutes to both Falun and Rättvik and close to Leksand and Nusnäs.”
But Bjursås Berg & Sjö offers its own extensive list of summer activities as well. Cycling and hiking are natural favourites – Vasaloppet winner and Bjursås native Alva Myhlback trains by running up Bjursberget in the summer. Only a stone’s throw away is the idyllic lake Bjursen, with pedal boats, row boats, canoes and SUPs. For those who prefer to stay on land, there is padel, mini-golf, frisbee golf, boules and even football billiards.
Since Per Kempe took over the facility in 2016 under the threat of closure, Bjursås Berg & Sjö has grown – slowly but surely. Soon, the campsite will have 32 cottages, 220 seasonal pitches, 60 drop-in pitches and even a hotel with 18 rooms.
Bjursås Berg & Sjö offers many activities year round. Holens Kaffestuga in Tällberg is one of the oldest cafés in Sweden.
CHARMING TÄLLBERG
After a dip in Bjursen, we head to Tällberg, a village on Lake Siljan bewteen Rättvik and Leksand. It is easy to understand why it is one of Dalarna’s most popular and charming locations: Falu red wooden buildings with white trimming, summer meadows in bloom, and a magnificent view of Lake Siljan framed by a feeling of timelessness. Dalarna shrunk onto a postcard.
After coffee and waffles at Holens Kaffestuga – one of Sweden’s oldest cafés (90 years!) – and a stop by Klockargården, where local artisans display their worldclass handicraft, we continue along Lake Siljan.
WORLD’S LONGEST LAKE PIER
We choose between Leksand Sommarland’s high ropes course and Sweden’s only parallel toboggan (rodel) run at Rättviksbacken. We choose the toboggan run and don’t regret it for a second. Up the hill, Dalarna’s magnificent panorama unfolds like a movie on a natural wide screen. On the horizon we catch a glimpse of both Leksand and Tällberg, and when we release the brake on the toboggan it tingles in our stomachs throughout the 1 km ride.
Back on the ground, we walk the 628 m out into Lake Siljan on the world’s longest lake pier. Långbryggan in Rättvik features couples strolling hand in hand, teenagers with fishing

rods, and children playing in the water at Siljansbadet.
RELAXING FLY FISHING IN ÄLVDALEN
After an intensive day, we unwind at Älvdalens Camping. The large grassy area tucked between the pine forest and the rushing Dalälven river has 200 large pitches for caravans, campers and tents – as well as 37 cottages. The last rays of the sun sparkle on the rapids of Österdalälven river, and the scent of newly cut grass blends with the scent of pine.
“Älvdalen has four clear seasons,” says Per Leandersson, who runs the campsite.
It is open year round, but is busiest during the summer months. It is easy to understand why visitors are drawn to this scenic oasis.
“Visitors want to see mountains, water, hills and forest – and they get that here. There is an ice skating and swimming hall next to the campsite, and cycling hiking and canoeing on the river are popular summer activities. And then the fishing – our speciality.”
Fishing – and particularly fly fishing – is one of the most popular activities. We follow Stefan Larsson, who runs Älvdalens Fiskecenter together with Per Leandersson. The store is next door to the reception. Tonight, the water is too still and the air too warm for the fish to bite. But Stefan Larsson’s impassioned stories about fish and flies are the perfect replacement.
With Stefan Larsson’s help, the fish are never far away.
Leafy Tällberg has some of Dalarna’s most serene views.
Don’t miss summer tobogganing with a view of Lake Siljan.
WILD MOUNTAINS OF IDRE
The next day we are up early. In Idre, in the far north of Dalarna and right next to the Norwegian border, awaits the challenge of the high mountains. In an inflatable two-man canoe, we throw ourselves into Storån, and our adrenaline is pumping as we manoeuvre the unexpectedly difficult and maxed out rapids. Luckily, our guide at the front of the boat makes us feel safe. Later, on our way to Sälen, we stop at Njupeskär, Sweden’s highest waterfall at 90 m, in Fulufjället National Park. An impressive display of water, cliffs and old forest – Dalarna’s dramatic nature up close.
CYCLE VASALOPPET
In Sälen, we set off on the trail for the classic Vasaloppet ski race – on mountainbikes. It is possible to bike the entire trail, and every year 23,000 cyclists come to bike all or part; Cykelvasan 90 is the most popular. We pass classic Vasaloppet control stations such as Mångsbodarna, Evertsberg and Oxberg as we swoosh onward.
At the end of the trail, in Mora, there are plenty of reasons to stay a while. Dalarna is home to no less than two of Sweden’s most famous artist homes, and Zorngården is a gem you will not want to miss. Here, we step right into the world of Anders Zorn – where he and his wife Emma lived surrounded by art, travel treasures, and period furniture. In contrast to Carl Larsson’s bright and colourful home in Sundborn, Zorngården is more intimate and international, but just as vibrant in the details that describe a historic artist’s life in Dalarna.
FINE DINING IN A MOUNTAIN OASIS
Tired and hungry, we end our trip with a luxury dinner at the restaurant Frö in Sälen. An elegant fine-dining oasis in Hundfjället, where the focus is on local ingredients and creative flavours with a seasonal menu. The restaurant is flourishing under owners Emma, Malin and Charlie, who have worked at prominent restaurants such as Oaxen and Fäviken. The bill for eight courses is more than SEK 1,000, but trust us – it is worth every krona.

Fairways close to mountains
At Idrefjällens GK, next to Storån river, every swing comes with vast views of mountains and forests. Elevation differences and mountain streams offer a challenging and varied playing experience. With its affordable green fee and recurring ranking in Svensk Golf’s top 50 golf courses in Sweden, it is easy to understand why Idre’s golf course is so popular.
Oppigårds Bryggeri on the outskirts of Hedemora is an excellent example of Dalarna’s rich tradition in craftsmanship – in liquid form. The brewery brews everything from modern IPA to classics such as Dalalager. It is open two nights a week for guided tours of the journey from kernel to tap.
Painted cultural heritage
Sweden’s most famous symbol – the Dala horse – comes from the village of Nusnäs outside Mora. Follow the journey from piece of wood to colourful horse, a handicraft that has been passed down for generations. At Nils Olsson Dalahästar, you can also paint your own.

MAGNIFICENT STYGGFORSEN
Just outside Boda Kyrkby lies Styggforsen, a nature reserve where a 36m-high waterfall cascades down among the steep cliffs. The path around the area is short but exciting: dark forests, mossy boulders, suspension bridges and outlooks that bring you close to the thunderous water. The site was formed by a meteorite that crashed 377 million years ago, which adds to the excitement.
INNOVATION IN INSJÖN

Five
roads that make the journey the destination
Sweden is filled with roads that offer fantastic nature, varying landscapes and lots of culture. These five roads definitely make the journey part of the destination.
TEXT Joel Linde
SAGAVÄGEN (SAGA ROAD)
From Örnsköldsvik to Brønnøysund at the Atlantic coast in Norway. This road cuts through forests and between lakes with mountain view after mountain view. Rest areas with ambitious fairytale paths, dotted with paintings and sculptures, make it a true "saga".
INLANDSVÄGEN (INLAND ROAD)
With forests, river valleys and mountainous views from Gothenburg to Karesuando, this road intermittently follows the railway. Cities such as Mora, Östersund and Jokkmokk are great side trips, with plenty of nature and culture experiences along the way.
RIKSETTAN (ROUTE 1)
An old national highway, this road is a quiet tourist stretch today between Vaggeryd and Örkelljunga. Follow the Lagan river through Småland and Skåne’s cultural landscapes
with farms, churches and small villages offering lovely breaks.
ITALIENSKA VÄGEN (ITALIAN ROAD)
Follow this road between Mölle and Kullen Lighthouse in Skåne and experience the steep slopes of Kullaberg mountain next to the sea. Dating back to the 1800s, this road winds up to higher elevations, much like the roads in Italy.
KONSTVÄGEN SJU ÄLVAR (SEVEN RIVERS ART ROUTE)
From Umeå at the Baltic Sea to Borgafjäll close to the Norwegian border. This 335 km stretch of road merges the landscape and art in a unique exhibition. The road passes seven rivers and a number of works of art set in nature along the roadside, offering unexpected breaks and new perspectives.
The Italian road leads to Kullen Lighthouse.

Bjäre’s rich diversity
Skåne may be a small part of Sweden, but it offers something for everyone. Bjäre peninsula to the west impresses with its food, expanses, and rolling coastlines.
TEXT Cenneth Sparby
Ea rly summer sun and the perfect time to explore Bjäre peninsula. Some enjoyable days with camping, cycling and delicious food. If Österlen is said to be the Toscana of Skåne, then Bjäre peninsula is Sweden’s own French Provence. Rolling hills with both lush beech forests and vast, open fields where cows and sheep graze. And then the every present sea, of course.
Båstad welcomes with gardens full of lilacs and peonies. This classic summer hub is equipped for peak season with tennis tournaments and a harbour filled with restaurants and people.

Idyllic Båstad Camping is a 10-minute bike ride away from the Skummeslövsbadet pool and the Allarp sand dunes. There is outdoor swimming in a nature reserve, with a long sand beach and a magical pine forest. And the harbour in Båstad is only 15 minutes away by bike.
A swim at sunset is one of western Sweden’s great pleasures.
DESTINATION: WESTERN SKÅNE
ON A TRIP THROUGH BJÄRE
We start our visit to Bjäre by cycling to Torekov along parts of the Kattegattleden trail, which runs just outside of Båstad Camping. It is very popular and connects Gothenburg, via Kullen Peninsula, with Helsingborg. We first explore Båstad’s streets and alleyways and the reverently renovated small stone buildings. Across the railway tracks and up towards Lyadalen, an old stream valley with lush alder and beech forests.
“If Österlen is said to be the Toscana of Skåne, then Bjäre peninsula is Sweden’s own French Provence.”
This area is perfect for hikers as well, with the Skåneleden trail continuing on towards the Grevie Backar nature reserve and its landscape formed by Ice Age rivers. The view of Skälderviken bay, Kullen peninsula, and Torekov from the grassy hills is lovely.
After Grevie, we approach the beach at Segeltorp, where we stop at Vita Vråkens Havtorn farms to treat our taste buds to the local culinary arts in a fantastic setting.
NATURAL MEETING PLACE
We travel on to Torekov in the north-west along lush sand dunes. We stop for a break at Skaudd, which has a view of the Hallands Vaderö nature reserve.
It is roughly the centre of the Bjäre coast nature reserve, which stretches from Vejbystrand in the south up to Hovs Hallar. The coastline is dotted with burial sites from the early Bronze age, in particular Dagshög. It is Skåne’s largest at a diameter of 42 m. Closer to the beach are buildings reminiscent of the stone mason era of the Bjäre coast.
In Torekov, the Morgonbryggan pier is a natural meeting place in the summer, with people lining up to swim. Up above is the old pilote station Lotsen, the yellow wooden building standing on the cliffs that has been there since 1878 and has become a symbol for Torekov.
EMERGING WINE DISTRICT
The vineyard Thora Vingård is a must for visitors who like local food and beverages. In recent years, Bjäre has become known for its wine. It has always been known for its new potatoes, but it also now boasts several vineyards.
One of them is Thora Vingård, between Torekov and Hovs Hallar, where Heather and Johan Öberg started their project more than 10 years ago.
Together with enologists Roman Chichery and Emma Berto, they are expanding the concept and recently opened the restaurant Flora, which also has a farm shop.
“It really is a dream come true,” says Heather during our tour of the fields.
We are close to the wilderness of Hovs Hallar. The Hallandsåsen fault and the sea meet dramatically here, with high cliffs, sea stacks, glacial erratics and cave-like formations.
One sharp contrast is Norrviken’s blooming gardens between ”Hallarna” and Båstad. Created by garden architect Rudolf Abelin in the early 1900s, it is one of Bjäre Peninsula’s more popular destinations.
Norrviken has around 12 different themes in its garden and several temporary exhibitions. It is also next door to Caravan Club Norrvikens Camping.
It feels right to finish the day at Skansens Kallbadhus in Båstad, with its steam sauna and a refreshing dip in the sea.
Thora Vingård has both a restaurant and a shop.
Tip!
Ravinen Kulturhus in Båstad is a meeting place year round –with a design store, sculpture park and concert hall. There is also a popular bistro.
Yellow Lotshuset from 1878 is a true Torekov icon.

Fishing in northern Sweden
Join fishing expert Matilda Leijon as she travels to some of her favourite waters in northern Norrland – where mountains meet the forest, the silence is all-encompassing, and every cast promises something greater than just fish.
TEXT Matilda Leijon PHOTO Matilda Leijon/Hannes Ribbner
Tip!
When fishing with a hook and line, try switching out the worm for a corn kernel or a ball of dough. Adjust the float so the hook is about 20 cm above the bottom.
Ihave been fishing for almost three decades. From childhood fishing rods and lakes to heavy pike in the archipelago and trout in mountain streams – but something always pulls me north. To places where time slows and nature clears the mind. And best of all? You don’t need to be an expert. All you need is curiosity, patience –and preferably a thermos of coffee.
CAMPING MAKES EVERYTHING BETTER
For me, it all starts with the camp. I pitched my tent next to a still lake
outside of Arjeplog – where pine forests smell sweet and the mosquitoes buzz like background music. Surrounded by water like Tjårvek, Uddjaure and Storavan – lakes with trout, char and pike, depending on season and elevation.
A short trip to the south, in Arvidsjaur, is Camp Gielas. It is next to a swimming lake and perfect for day trips to small ponds and larger lakes in the area. Places like Abborrträsket and Bäverträsket – excellent for bass fishing in the summer and spinning for pike in the late summer.
Even though I have been fishing for as long as I can remember, I still love a line with bait. It requires so little, but gives so much back. I usually fish with my line along the edges of bays in the Vindelälven river or in small ponds around Sorsele. At Vindelforsarnas Camping, you can pitch camp right next to the wild waters. Here, stillness and patience are rewarded. It is often bass or whitefish that bite, but sometimes something unexpected appears.
CATCH PIKE AND TROUT
I leave the Baltic Sea area and head inland, up towards the mountains of Hemavan and Tärnaby. There are fantastic mountain lakes here, like Malgomaj outside of Vilhelmina, which is part of Ångermanälven river’s catchment area. Tärnasjön, which is part of Umeälven river, lies more north. Both are excellent for spinning (a rod with an artificial lure). The pike patrol the reeds, and the trout stand where water flows. A simple rod, a spinning reel, and some classic pulls go a long way.
Pike is our largest predatory fish. Fast, strong, unpredictable, and everywhere. Look for backwaters where the water flows – small, quiet bays where the water is still. The pike will be there, waiting, until prey swims past.
If you are lucky you could catch sea trout – the shiny, silver dream. There is something special about catching a sea trout where the river meets the sea. I usually use spoons or wobblers that move steadily with a bit of a wiggle. Most important is to research – or ask someone in a fishing store. Up here, people love to share.
”The pike will be there, waiting, until prey swims past”
Camping means freedom and the possibility of being first to the water in the morning.
FLY FISHING – NEXT LEVEL
When I am up here in the north of Sweden, I always do a bit of fly fishing. It is where nature and technology meet. I started in the slow stretches of the Åman river close to Blattnicksele with simple dry flies and more will than knowledge. It was frustrating until I managed to get the line and bait to dance where I wanted, but then – magical.
Try fly fishing in mountain streams around Hemavan or along Tjulån. You do not need expensive equipment – a class 5 rod and some imitations (flies designed to imitate real insects) are enough. The season is short, but intensive. The best dry fly fishing is from the end of June until mid-August. I promise: that feeling when the fly lands and the fish rise is addictive.
Whatever the method, I think that the fish are bigger when you are camping. Freedom, closeness, and the possibility to be first to the water in the morning. In northern Norrland, there are lots of campsites really close to good fishing grounds, and you can often get help at campsites with both fishing permits and guided tours.
With a simple camping stove and coffee pot, I can get quite far. And if the fish aren’t biting, almost everything still tastes good in nature.

How we create Europe's best camping experience
We want you, our guests, to feel confident when booking your accommodation. We have created several quality systems that will help you easily choose a quality and sustainable campsite that meets your needs. Look for the Svensk Camping member emblem when on holiday so you know you have made a good choice.
What do the stars mean?
A campsite can choose to be classified according to Svensk Camping's classification system, which provides guests with additional information about services and standards. Our ambition is for this system to help you choose your holiday accommodation by comparing standards and services. The stars summarise the scores the campsite received within four categories: service buildings, areas, facilities and activities.
★★★ – PRACTICAL AND WELL-ORGANISED
Campsites at this level offer a good basic standard with functional service buildings and the most important amenities. The facilities are wellmanaged with a limited - but useful - selection of activities and services. Perfect for those seeking simple but comfortable accommodation.
★★★★ – COMFORTABLE AND WELL-EQUIPPED
These campsites offer a higher standard with modern service buildings and a broader selection of amenities. Expect good service, for example a store, and a wider selection of activities and services. The campsite is well-managed and well-thoughtout to offer an enjoyable camping experience.
★★★★★ – HIGH STANDARD AND FULL SERVICE
Five-star campsites offer most of whatever visitors could want. With modern facilities and maximum comfort, they offer everything from restaurants and shops to spas, pools and activity areas. These facilities are designed to offer a comprehensive experience for both kids and adultsa true dream holiday!
WILDERNESS – ADVENTURES CLOSE TO NATURE
Wilderness camping is for those seeking nature's calm. Coming closer to nature - and not luxury and servicesis the objective here. There might not be any electricity or service buildings, but in return visitors experience true wilderness and nature-based activities.
A sign of quality
To become a member of Svensk Camping, campsites must be run well and meet our minimum standard requirements. All member firms meet the requirements in our certification for Swedish campsites, which were introduced in 2022. Becoming a certified Swedish campsite is a stamp of quality that shows that the campsite complies with applicable laws and regulations on good business ethics and serious business practices. The certification requires the campsites to meet minimum requirements on work environment, sustainability, complaint procedures and onsite safety. A certified campsite, in other words, is a safe and secure choice for you as a guest.
A conscious choice for the future
In addition to the classification system, a campsite can also choose to be included in Svensk Camping's sustainability system. The sustainability marking shows that the facility works in a structured and long-term manner with sustainability in the areas of the environment, resource management and personnel. This marking provides guidance for guests looking for a more sustainable camping holiday. Read more on page 51.
"We are working together with our members to achieve the vision of offering Europe’s best camping experiences."
These member emblems are designed to provide security and clarity for you as a guest.
New
Easier to compare and choose
There are more than 7,000 cottages at campsites at Camping.se. To make comparisons easier for guests, campsites can voluntarily use Svensk Camping's cottage categorisation method. The categories – Basic to Premium – provide a clear overview of the cottage's comfort level and the basic functions included.
The categories make it easier to understand what is included in each cottage regardless of its location within the country. You will get a clear overview of comfort level, equipment and amenities already before you travel – which makes it easier to find a cottage that meets your specific needs and expectations.
There are five different categories that range from Basic to Premium. The categories use uniform descriptions that follow the same assessment principles for all campsites.
FACTORS CONSIDERED IN THE CATEGORISATION
METHOD
Interior – furniture and interior design
Water and hygiene – access to shower, WC and water
Kitchen – equipment, food preparation, and comfort
Bedroom – number of beds, sleeping comfort and privacy
Exterior – the building's condition and outdoor environment
Cottage categories help guests compare and choose the right cottage based on the standard and equipment.
cottages
Five cottage categories
BASIC

BASIC PLUS

STANDARD
A well-equipped cottage with a good comfort level, including a bathroom and kitchen.
COMFORT
A comfortable cottage with a kitchen, common areas, and at least one separate bedroom with floor beds for a convenient and enjoyable stay.
PREMIUM
A cottage with a high standard, fully equipped, multiple separate bedrooms with floor beds, and details that raise both the comfort level and the overall experience.
How we are working for a more sustainable industry
When you choose a campsite that has a Svensk Camping sustainability marking, you are choosing a campsite that works actively and systematically with sustainability - for people, the environment and the future. For guests, this means a more secure stay and a holiday that feels good, both now and in the future.
What does the sustainability marking mean?
Svensk Camping's sustainability marking is based on more than 50 criteria, broken down into 9 main categories, which are regulated in the Svensk Camping Standard.
Campsites that choose to sign up adopt a long-term and structured approach to their work for both the environment and people. Through common criteria, clear processes and regular follow-up by authorised system advisors, we ensure that the sustainability marking is not only an ambition but also concrete action to achieve a more sustainable industry in the future, where the participating campsites receive support to develop over time.
MORE THAN A SIGN ON THE WALL
For guests, the sustainability marking is a promise of consideration. A sign that the campsite has well-thought-out procedures and clear guidance on everything from clear information to hospitality that takes responsibility for both your experience and the future. This means a better overall experience for you - and a camping holiday that feels good from start to finish.

Look for the green tree – Svensk Camping's sustainability symbol that leads the way to a more conscious camping holiday. The symbol stands for responsibility, long-termism, and consideration for both nature and people.
Svensk Camping's sustainability marking is a trademarked symbol that depicts a pine tree set against a green background. A simple signal to guests that the campsite is working actively for a more sustainable holiday. Scan the QR code to read more at svenskcamping.com

According to local legend, the mounds contained the remains of ancient kings, and finds from excavations in 1846, confirmed that the legends were true. Visit the site and Old Uppsala Museum for an interesting lesson in medieval history.

Swedish midsummer
Midsummer is an old and honoured tradition in Sweden. The holiday celebrates the summer solstice and falls sometime during the period 20–26 June. Midsummer Eve always falls on a Friday, and it is on this day that the Midsummer pole is raised and decorated with flowers and leaves. Traditional music is played as both young and old dance around the pole. No Midsummer Eve is complete without herring, new potatoes and a delicious strawberry cake. The Midsummer holiday is celebrated throughout Sweden, and visitors do not need to travel far to find a local Midsummer celebration.
