In 1876, Colorado became the 38th state. In 1911, the Colorado state flag was created in the form we know today. In 2026, we celebrate 150 years of being part of the United States.
The blue in the flag represents the magnificent blue skies over our state. The white symbolizes the snowcapped Rocky Mountains. The gold circle represents the golden sunshine Colorado enjoys more than 300 days a year. The red “C” stands for Colorado, while the state’s nickname, the Centennial State, reflects the fact that Colorado became a state in 1876 100 years after American independence.
The Roaring Fork Valley was once the summer hunting grounds of the Ute people, with camps established near natural spring sources. Aspen evolved from a silver mining town into a world - renowned destination for restoring the mind, body, and spirit, and now celebrated as a modern ski town, with mountain biking, hiking, fine dining, and shopping woven into its character.
The same entrepreneurial spirit that once brought the Ute people and the miners to this valley now lives on in the business owners featured in the pages of The Scout Guide today. The same mountains that served as training grounds for the 10th Mountain Division and helped launch the American West’s skiing boom are the mountains we protect and enjoy today.

On May 6, 1911, the Colorado State Legislature passed Senate Bill 118, designating a new Colorado state flag. That piece of legislation also included a section explaining “10 Significations” of the flag, which are reprinted here:
1. The red C stands for Colorado, a Spanish word, meaning red.
2. C stands for centennial. Colorado was admitted to the Union in the year 1876 the one hundredth anniversary of American independence.
3. C stands for columbine, the state flower of Colorado.
4. The gold center symbolizes the glorious all-the-year-round sunshine of Colorado.
5. The aureate center also represents the most precious of metals, gold, in the production of which Colorado excels all other states.
6. The Yale blue stripes stand for the ever-smiling skies of the Rocky Mountain region.
7. The white stripe typifies the white metal, silver, in whose production Colorado also leads the entire galaxy of states.
8. The white stripe further represents the snowy peaks of the Rocky Mountains.
9. The blue and white stripes together give us two of the delicate colors of the exquisite state flower, the columbine.
10. The interlaced gold and silver cords symbolize the union and harmony of the sterling people of the Centennial State.
