About Scotty’s Little Soldiers

Scotty’s Little Soldiers is a charity which supports bereaved British Forces children. The charity was founded by Nikki Scott following the death of her husband, Cpl Lee (Scotty) Scott in Afghanstan in 2009. Nikki saw first hand the effect losing a loved one can have on a child and decided to set up Scotty’s Little Soldiers in memory of her late husband. Today the charity is supporting hundreds of children who have all lost a parent serving in our British Armed Forces. From holiday breaks to Christmas parties and bereavement support to development grants the charity has a wide range of activities designed to ‘help their children smile.’

Volunteers: we’re always on the look out for volunteers to help at events or to proactively organise events and charity collections for us. Allowing members of your team to volunteer during work hours is another way the charity can benefit from your support. Financial Donations for running costs: Ultimately all sustainable charities have running costs and whilst we work hard to keep ours to a minimum we appreciate corporate donations towards the running of the charity. Financial Donations for charitable activity: whilst many businesses are happy to contribute to the running of the charity some like their donations to be towards a specific aim. We have a wide range of target donations to suit all budgets, for example £500 will cover a families expenses for a weeks holiday, £5,000 will pay for all our Scotty Members to enjoy a family meal at Rememberance or £120,000 will buy a new Scotty Lodge!
How your business can help...
The work of Scotty’s Little Soldiers in supporting bereaved military children is not funded by the government or Ministry of Defence. In fact the majority of the charity’s funding comes from the general public, either through donations or amazing fundraising activities. As a charity we also rely heavily on our corporate partners, both financially and by providing pro-bono support. Here are just a few of the ways businesses small and large are contributing to the future of our fallen heroes’ children: •

Increasing awareness: raising the profile of the charity is one of our major objectives and we are extremely grateful to all the organisations that help us do this. Vehicle stickers, web links, newsletter articles, banners at events, logo’s on products are all simple ways to raise further awarenss of the charity. Pro-bono support: we’ve been fortunate in the past to have received free professional support in areas such as web site design, accounting, printing, PR, courier deliveries, event management and many more. Non-financial donations: our entire office is kitted out with furniture and equipment donated by individuals or businesses. Much of our stationary has been donated and our first professional event gazebo was even donated for free. Sponsorship: we have numerous sponsorship opportunities available throughout the year (see the sponsorship article on the back page).

The benefits of working with a charity As well as knowing your organisation has been able to support individuals and groups in less fortunate circumstances there are numerous other benefits to working closely with a charity.

Scotty’s is currently enjoying the 2nd year of it’s licensing agreement with Tesco’s F&F clothing brand. The partnership has raised huge awareness for the charity as well as backing up Tesco’s committment to the Armed Forces Corporate Covenant. Tesco procures and sells the Scotty’s branded clothing online and donates all profits to the charity.
Charity of the year Many organisations select one or more charities of the year and focus all of their fundraising activity on these selected causes for the next 12 months or so. Organisations who have choosen to support Scotty’s in the past have encouraged staff to organise fundraising events both in the workplace and outside and often match whatever fundraising amounts are raised. Workplace morale can often be improved by allowing staff to work with a charity through fundraising or volunteering. Forming a team to manage the fundraising project can also boost employee confidence. Charity partnerships can also open up networking and marketing opportunities. Sponsorship of events often presents opportunities for an organisation to have a presence at the event either through branding or personnel. Brand association with the right charity can also enhance the reputation of the business in question. Of course there can also be financial benefits to donating to charities through Corporation Tax relief. Monetary gifts to charity are paid gross and these donations will therefore be deductable from profits when calculating corporation tax.

Sponsorship... Perhaps the best choice for a business looking to directly benefit from it’s association with Scotty’s Little Soldiers is sponsorship of an activity, event or equipment. We have numerous opportunities for sponsorship throughout the year and a few a list below. Events organised by the charity include the magical Christmas party for the children (to be held at London Zoo in 2015) which is not only an amazing, fun day for the kids but also sees some very special bonds and friendships created. We also hold an annual charity ball in October with tables available, award sponsorship packages and we’re always on the look out for auction prizes as well! Throughout the year we set up awareness displays at events, shopping/city centres and supermarkets. Events attended this year include Goodwood Festival of Speed, RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, Armed Forces Day in Cardiff, Guildford, Plymouth and Birmingham to name just a few. Sponsorship of displays at individual events or a number of road shows helps the charity take part in more awareness raising activities. Sponsorship of fundraising gazebos, banners or vehicles is another way to support the charity and raise brand awareness at the same time. The Scotty’s Tigers Rugby team has enjoyed a great deal of success over the past 3 years, earning 2 world records, winning numerous summer 7’s tournaments and playing in a number of high profile exhibition matches.
