New York-based painter Don Spaulding devoted much of his career to the U.S. Cavalry. “My love affair with the U.S. Cavalry and the American West really blossomed in 1949 when I saw She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. I had already been affected by Frederic Remington’s paintings, but it was the movie that turned me into a cavalry buff,” he said. “I still watch She Wore a Yellow Ribbon when it shows on television. Now the inaccuracies in uniforms and equipment amuse me, but I still find the visual excitement.” Spaulding studied under Norman Rockwell, and later found validation when his work was shown at West Point and commended for its accuracy.

Cowboy at Work shows a rider clinging to the neck of a steer as his horse gallops next to him. Steer wrestling, or bulldogging, was an interest of Marjorie Reed, who painted it several times in her long career. The California-based artist was primarily known for her thrilling paintings of stagecoaches, and yet she also painted working cowboys frequently. Reed worked on a ranch at least once, as did her husband, cowboy and occasional outlaw Harvey Day, whose name Reed sometimes signed on her paintings to pass as a male painter. This piece was completed in 1938, not long after Reed became friends with artist Jack Wilkinson Smith.

Wayne Wolfe is the son of early Cowboy Artists of America member Byron Wolfe, although Wayne wasn’t an artist at the time of his father’s death in 1973. Six months later, he decided to follow his father’s footsteps as a painter. Within two years he was painting full time. Wolfe was mentored by distinguished artists Robert Lougheed and later Tom Lovell, both of whom guided him down toward specific goals—Lougheed encouraged him to work from life, and Lovell urged him to focus on the head and figure. Today Wolfe’s works speak to the grandeur and beauty of the Rocky Mountain West.

Glenna Goodacre’s skill as a sculptor could be seen in all her work, but depictions of children occupied a special place in her heart. “During the settling of the West, while adults were waging territorial wars, I would hope there was some peace for children,” she wrote about The Gift in Glenna Goodacre: The First 25 Years “This sculpture was meant to relate a moment of compassion as a pioneer child shares her doll with a Native American girl. This was one of the first pieces I did in my new studio after the move to Santa Fe in 1984, a real turning point for me.”

McCarthy. The artist, known for his thrilling action scenes and highly detailed paintings, frequently painted images of power, might and bravery. “Courage was paramount in the warrior code,” he wrote.

In 1913, reeling from the loss of his wife and suffering from tuberculosis, Sheldon Parsons left New York to live in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he started a new life amid terrible anguish. Parsons, at that point in his career, was already a well-respected artist who had studied under William Merritt Chase, but the new location unlocked something visceral in his work. Over the next 30 years, Parsons explored the New Mexico landscape, often painting modern landscape images that unified the land, trees and architecture into a single cohesive vision of the Southwest.

In 1891, not long after relocating from Germany to Chicago, Gustave Baumann’s father abandoned the family, creating immense pressure on young Gustave to help provide for his mother. The teen’s first job was in the printing trades, which foretold of Baumann’s eventual rise as a painter and woodblock printer. He learned art at the Art Institute of Chicago, opened his own advertising studio, returned to Germany to study and created a hit 1912 calendar book in Indiana. It wasn’t until 1918 when Baumann finally arrived in New Mexico to meet his destiny in the Southwest. His work was immediately accepted into the Taos Art Colony, and soon even the Taos Society of Artists as an associate member. His woodblock prints, brimming with color and modernist design, are evocative of the mood and light of Northern New Mexico. “Baumann’s woodcut prints serve as romantic icons of the Southwest by depicting views of mesas, mountains and ancient ruins; by defining cultural vistas dominated by Indigenous cultures; and by celebrating the region’s distinctive architecture,” writes Joseph Traugott in Gustave Baumann’s Southwest. “This idyllic perspective is now known as the Southwesternist view, a style that presents an overly colorful, idealized view of the region and its Native peoples.”

Although this painting does not depict the four founders of the Cowboy Artists of America—Joe Beeler, Charlie Dye, George Phippen and John Hampton—it does correlate to a passage in Joe Beeler: Life of a Cowboy Artist in which three of the founders, including Beeler, went on a trail ride in Mexico. “On cold, starry nights, they huddled around the campfire dining on beef and beans and swapping stories with the vaqueros about bad horses and wild times,” writes Don Hedgpeth. “The experience strengthened the bond between the three and the idea began to take shape of gathering others like themselves, artists with cowboy inclinations, whose lives and art might be enriched by such a hands-on encounter with rawhide reality. It was the genesis of a concept that became the Cowboy Artists of America.”

This bust of the 26th president of the United States was created by Alexander Phimister Proctor sometime around 1922, when the artist was commissioned by Henry Waldo Coe, a friend of the late president, to create a large monument of Teddy Roosevelt on horseback as a Rough Rider. The monument was given to the city of Portland, where it remained until it was severely damaged during unrest in the city in 2020. Prior to the monument’s completion, Proctor said he felt strongly about Roosevelt because, like so many adventurous spirits of the 1800s, he wanted to be a Rough Rider. The casting of the monument is documented in “The Making of a Bronze Statue,” a 1922 silent film by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The film, which has been digitized and is available online, was the first time a complete bronze casting process was ever put on film.

Named after the children’s fable, Three Little Pigs show a trio of javelina crossing through a camp unbeknownst to the cowboy in the teepee or the horse in the distant shadows. The image certainly comes from something Bill Owen saw in his own life in the West. His father a cowboy and his mother an artist, Owen combined the two careers into one. He originally worked in both paint and clay, but a rodeo injury in 1989 cost him an eye, which made working in three dimensions difficult, so he abandoned sculpture to paint exclusively. He was elected to the Cowboy Artists of America in 1973 and he guided the group during pivotal years of growth.

Although he is not widely known in Western circles, Charles Wysocki’s works are instantly recognizable due to their flat rendering of three-dimensional forms that are compressed into lively compositions stuffed with interesting detail. His landscapes have been compared to works by Grandma Moses, the folk artist who brought life to American country scenes. This work, a rare still life by the artist, presents objects from the Old West, including a tin of tobacco, a spur, an oil lamp and a cloth pouch with a drawstring. Wysocki’s works have been reproduced in countless ways, including on calendars, puzzles and prints. Before his death in 2002, Wysocki was named one of the top 25 best-selling artists in the country.

While several Western artists began their careers in modern art and moved to realism (see Harry Jackson), Allan Houser moved in the opposite direction. The Chiricahua Apache artist originally started as a painter at the Santa Fe Indian Art School, where founder Dorothy Dunn encouraged artistic conformity from her students. On his own, Houser immediately began working in three dimensions in a more contemporary style. By the end of his career, he was exploring abstract shapes and complex visual themes, and had fully embraced modern art. This work, created in 1993, represents a trio of blanket-clad figures.

Born in the Minnesota, raised in the Dakotas, educated in Kansas and California—Fritz Scholder didn’t arrive in the Southwest until 1960, when he was 23 years old. When he settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico, his career took off. He created a large body of lithographs, had solo gallery shows, lectured at Dartmouth and Princeton colleges, and was invited to do a two-man show with T.C. Cannon at the Smithsonian Institution. By the 1970s, Scholder was one of the leading contemporary Western artists.

Luiseño painter Fritz Scholder worked on the leading edge of contemporary Western art, which occasionally put him at odds with more traditional styles. Created in 1984, Paul Calle’s Good Hunting is a quintessential painting by the popular artist: winter setting, mountain man subject, authentic gear and clothing, and adventure in the American wilderness. Calle started painting the West in 1973, not long after he worked for NASA and was the official artist for Apollo 11. Calle stood on the edge of history and sketched Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins the morning of their famous moonshot. His subjects couldn’t have been more different—astronauts and frontier trappers—and yet they reveal a lot about Calle: he painted exploration of all kinds.

Kenneth Riley’s work was firmly planted in the modern era in terms of composition and design, even as he turned to historical material as his subjects. This modern sensibility can be seen in Ceremonial Pipe, which is so meticulously designed that every line, every form and every shape has a visual resolution, and even thematic continuation, as the viewer’s eye is marched through the composition. Even Riley admits he became slightly obsessed about these concepts in the 1960s as he taught art classes in Utah. “Design, I decided, was the skeleton upon which everything in a painting hangs,” he wrote in West of Camelot: The Historical Paintings of Kenneth Riley. In the book, Riley writes about “The Idea,” which is the original motivation or point of emphasis. “The Idea is the means by which the artist imposes order,” Riley continues. “Through order comes clarification and communication. Everything in a painting subordinates to the Idea, which motivates all other elements, from the type of line, to the character of shape and the relationships of colors. Unlike the camera, which is limited to arrangements as they exist in space, artists arrange in order to present or dramatize an Idea. In so doing, design—not the subject—carries the impact of the picture.”
