A bit about the Local Heroes & Icons campaign Scotland’s baking industry is built on both craft and scale. From small community bakeries to the major producers whose bakery creations reach millions of homes across Scotland, every day. These larger bakeries are our Scottish Icons, the powerhouses of innovation, automation, consistency, and quality. They combine traditional expertise with modern technology to produce the breads, pastries, and sweet treats that consumers devour daily. Across Scotland, from bustling cities to rural towns, small to medium-sized artisan bakeries form the heart of their communities. They rise early, craft by hand, and create with passion, bringing warmth, flavour, and pride to every product they bake. These are Scotland’s Local Heroes. Bakers who nurture craft tradition, champion quality, and embody the spirit of local enterprise and innovation.

Meet our head judge and his deputy! Head Judge, Scott Anderson Scott Anderson joined Scottish Bakers in 2008 as a Training Advisor and now heads up NFDT’s training operations for bakery and Food and Drink Manufacturers throughout the UK. He is passionate about the baking industry and sustaining the skills within it. Scott began his career in 1985 with Newlands Home Bakery (Glasgow) where he learned his craft from old-school bakers. Scott moved into the supermarket sector in 1990, first with Safeway (now Morrisons) and then with Asda and Sainsbury’s. Before moving into the training and development field, Scott served as Production Manager at California Cake & Cookie in Glasgow. This role expanded his expertise beyond production, giving him valuable insights into purchasing, people management, planning, auditing, and close collaboration with New Product Development and Technical teams. His well-rounded industry experience allows him to understand the needs of both artisan and industrial bakery operations.

Deputy Head Judge, Fraser Hogg Born into a long line of skilled Scottish baking families (his grandfather was Scottish Bakers President 1957-58) , Fraser Hogg has dedicated his life to the baking industry. After early experience in his family’s bakeries in Glasgow and Paisley, he studied Food Science & Technology at the University of Strathclyde before joining Macphie, initially as a Technical Service Representative, following in his father’s footsteps. Having spent over 35 years heading up Product Development and latterly as Technical Director with Macphie, he helped drive major product and technology innovations, led university partnerships to advance bakery science, and championed skills development by establishing Macphie’s bakery apprenticeship programme. Retiring from Macphie in 2015, he still represents the company as an Ambassador as well as helping to govern Macphie’s Employee Trust, which charitably supports former, current and future Macphie employees. A respected industry advocate and a proud recipient of Scottish Bakers Life Membership in 2016, he has served as a judge for multiple national bakery awards and represented the sector through the Institute of Food Science and Technology and the Scottish Government’s Food Implementation Group. A past President and highly valued member of the Bakers & Confectioners Association since 1995, he is widely admired for his technical expertise and commitment to sharing knowledge.
